Here’s The Kicker: Vikings Take K Blair Walsh In 6th Round

Posted by Mike Wobschall on April 28, 2012 – 2:03 pm

With the 5th pick of the 6th round and the 175th choice overall, the Vikings selected former Georgia K Blair Walsh.

Walsh was extremely accurate as a sophomore, hitting 40 of 46 tries during those two seasons. He was 15 of 23 as a freshman and 21 of 35 as a senior, with 14 of his misses coming from 40+ yards. He led the nation in FG tries last year, and converted a 56-yard try as well.

As of now, the Vikings have three selections remaining in the draft, all of them in the 7th round.

Not sure why they did this at this point, thought Burfict was a better option as another Linebacker seemed like a more likely choice.

Plus, he is the highest ranked kicker in the draft this year… good pick

He is a heck of a kicker. He can kick 65 yards and he might as well break a kicking record. Dude this is a great pick! Go look at his highlights. He is 10 times better than our kicker!!

  14. By Parody on Apr 28, 2012 | Reply

If he’s got the leg strength, he’s a good pick. We need a kicker who can handle the deep attempts, and send the ball out of the endzone on kickoffs.

Accuracy probably isn’t ideal yet, as few rookie kickers are, but he’ll figure it out in time for a playoff run. Good timing.

    Mike B.

We take a 5′ 10″ WR that has everything but height over , say, a 6’3″ receiver that can’t catch (Troy Williamson) or doesn’t have the route running ability or is too slow to stretch the field. We needed a WR, and if there weren’t any prototypical sized WRs left that you could depend on, why not take the small baller? Harvin seems to do ok on the outside when he lines up there…

the point is are you going to waste a practice squad spot for a kicker?

  17. By Lance on Apr 28, 2012 | Reply

Both WR’s were the bad picks the TE/FB guy wasnt horrible… just not a huge need.

We do need a FS and LB now in my opinion

I think, after the last couple of years, that we are getting to used to being critical of our teams management. Step back and look what Spielman has done this offseason to correct the flaws in this roster. Personally, the only thing that I wish he’d done different is find a replacement for Loadholt.

I think he’s built a team that can win some games.

Next year, DT and outside receiver 1 and 2 rds, and LB to follow. No way they are going to go to deep this season with AP coming back, and other drama going on. Rebuilding guys/gals, takes a few seasons, and also GB getting better on D and they will make another run this year.

    Why so angry?

Ryan Longwell has had a good career, but last season he was among the worst kickers in the NFL. 24% of his kickoffs were touch-backs while the top10 kickers were over 50% touch-backs. Additionally his FG% was only 75% which ranks him about 18th of 22 for 16 game starting kickers.

  61. By VikingBlood on Apr 28, 2012 | Reply

Remember; college kickers have to kick from between much wider hash-marks. Kicking in the NFL, you are always near the center of the field. Great pick Vikes!!

  62. By Woodboat on Apr 28, 2012 | Reply

    Sounds fair, Shawn.

I’m far from an expert on which prospect is better than the next. My question was legitimate… I really was wondering if there was a top flight WR still available. I couldn’t imagine that there was a prototypical guy still available at that point that wouldn’t have some sort of major flaw. I guess you just have to choose which flaw you can live with.

In support of your arguement, though, you can teach a guy to run crisper routes, but you can’t teach tall…. so, maybe you’re right.

Good pick! Longwell’s best years are behind him and he will be gone the beginning of this year or next. All of you saying we should still be drafting WR’s or CB’s in the 6th-7th, have you looked at how many we have now? Don’t you think we would have taken the best of those positions with the guys we already drafted? I’m guessing we’ll get at least one linebacker in the 7th, the rest of the picks are completely at Speilman’s discretion on who he thinks is the best available players left on the board that aren’t filling a role we’re overfull on already (WR, CB). Those were 2 of the top needs in this draft and they’ve made a big splash on them already in FA and the draft.

Maybe our free agent signings showed that they are good enough to serve as backups. We might cut some of our Ol depth and Special-Teams depth in order to sign them. Personally I think most of our picks wouldn’t last long on the practice squad. The TE singning was good, because he seems to be a solid blocker, not as good as ksauce, and a much better receiving TE than ksauce ever was.
How many TE do we have right now? 3-4?

I must admit … I feel some optimism and can imagine an 8-8 season at this point.

8-8 because I understand even good rokies will struggle a bit as rookies. Rare to get Randy Moss and Adrian Peterson and Percy Harvin type production from rookies.

I think Kalil will be top 10 LT

I think Smith is an upgrade as a rookie but will be a lot bettter in year 2

and hopefully a couple others contribute early

  171. By lance on Apr 28, 2012 | Reply

for those complaining we did not get any playmakers, that was not our problem, We needed quarterback protection, opening holes for our playmakers, and spreading the field. All of these needs have been answered, so what were you looking for in the draft. We needed defense more than offense, we got a great safety, possibly two, plus a good cornerback in Robinson. We got a kicker who is very highly rated and now we can drop Longwell and get that money back. This has been a top notch draft. Now we have a decent LB. Keep in mind, almost no one from this low even makes a team, so the first 5 or 6 picks are the ones that were most critical.

So, overall the Vikings did a good job addressing the two biggest weaknesses well in the first round. Just missed on the top choice in the 3rd round, but still got a guy with a lot of potential. Then made some sorta questionable picks in day 3, but found the best kicker in the draft, and a couple guys who at least appear to have potential. Some other teams had big reaches, getting players who shouldn’t even have made a team as a UDFA.

So overall, I grade this year’s draft a B+. Missed some areas that I think the team needs, but we’ll see how they do once the season starts.

  207. By KoN on Apr 28, 2012 | Reply

I give the Vikes an A-, they got a lot of talented players (many later than they were projected to go) and set themselves up with a couple of picks in next year’s draft by trading away picks with less value.

The draft for the Vikings this year is a better one than the last 3 years. I really like the Walsh pick, the kicker. Trevor Guyton is a good draft steal. He was projectd as an 4th rounder and we got him in 7th. Nice one.

  213. By Spencer on Apr 28, 2012 | Reply

If Everson Griffin started last season I guarantee you that he would have had at-least 10 sacks. Robison is just a one trick pony, all he has is a speed rush…thats it. Meanwhile Everson has the speed rush, bull rush, and is solid at defending the run.

2/4 of Griffin’s sacks came from the DT spot…put this man on the edge and let him cause havoc!

    Griffin is the better player…

I believe they will do well. Since I am a NFL freak about their backgrounds, I have confidence that they will do well this season. I would say a 9-6 at the end of the season for 2012.

So don’t tell me we didn’t need any. Also, don’t make Harrison Smith out to be a pro bowler yet. Guy looks slow on film and that’s in college. Robinson and Wright are the only intriguing picks made after Kalil and that’s not saying a lot. I am a die hard fan, but a realistic one too. Vikings get a C- from me on this draft.

We had 5 good picks, and 5 reaches, but one of those reaches was on the kicker, so I’ll give the benefit of the doubt on that and say it was an even pick. Another of those reaches was on the Safety at pick 29, but it was a small reach and was for a very weak class, so that will wash off as even too, giving us an overall positive draft.

Let’s hope some of the late rounders pan out.

How can we go 4-12 when we should of won the first 6 games last year? We lost the game because of our defense couldn’t stop the passing. All 6 games we were in a lead at half-time. After half-time we lost the lead due to our bad defense because the oppoents team changed their play makers into more passing game knowing that our defense back is going to be a major blow. Remember we were 4th in NFL for rushing. If we have bad offense lineman then we wouldn’t be in 4th in the first place. We build up all the defense we need to stop the oppoents passing so that we could keep the lead again and not over turn the lead after halftime.

Holy heck, I agree we should’ve won those games, but we didn’t. So that really doesn’t translate much. That also means we should expect more of that this year. What did we do to upgrade the defense? Harrison Smith? Josh Robinson? Man I hope so, I hope I am proved all wrong. We will scare no one on offense this year and will find ourselves down in most games. That’s the problem with being a running team in a now passing league. Until Ponder has weapons, and the jury is still out on the majority of our skill positions, we will struggle. It’s just facts people.

I’m predicting a key injury to one of our division teams, making it likely we steal a game or two from our division. with the ease of the rest of our schedule, it’s not crazy to think we could go .500. Our total offense last year was not bad at all, it was our terrible defense, and I think we upgraded that immensely through the draft. I’m optimistic until proven otherwise, .500 here we come!

We are beginning to see a pattern in Rick Spielman’s drafting. It was fantastic to get the 13 picks, and I think we did well with them.

But…But…But…we seem to be AFRAID to scare our current players by drafting new players who would replace them.

You might guess that I am talking about the OFFENSIVE LINE, and you are right. As I see it I am firmly entrenched in that role. NO ONE else cares enough to fight for what is right!!!

We will be 8-8 this year, mainly because of the schedule.

I liked all of our picks, including the two ARK WRs and the kicker. The kicking game scores more points than the rest of the players, so it’s important and Longwell is nearing the end. I also read some comments saying we should’ve drafted McNutt from Iowa… NO. I watched the guy play in the Big Ten every week and he’s not great. For Iowa, maybe. But not the NFL. Stop with the negatively and the pessimism, it won’t get us fans anywhere

  247. By NorthwoodsVikesFan on Apr 30, 2012 | Reply

Seriously? We pick a kicker who missed more FGs last year than Longwell did? Who cares if he can kick it 65 yards – a miss is a miss.

Longwell hit 78% last season – this guy hit only 60% last year.

    Wasted pick. Stupid pick.

You use one kicker as the kickoff specialist and one as the field goal kicker….lots of teams do it. and even if he takes a spot on the practice squad, so be it. We call a whopping 3 of those guys up a year. and plus the guy was the best in the draft. great leg. kickers win games! theres a reason why kickers are the leading scorers on alotta squads. And as for the shorter wide out…why not. hes fast, can return kicks/punts, and was productive in college….sounds a little like harvin ay? there was no solid pick at wide out there so u look for someone with good skills and develop him.
    Great Draft
