Spielman Plays Cards Right And Lands Two Aces

Posted by Mike Wobschall on April 27, 2012 – 12:10 am

Bravo, Rick Spielman. In the proverbial poker game that is the NFL draft, Spielman and Co. strolled up to the table with a pretty big chip – the #3 overall pick – and parlayed some perfectly timed subterfuge with a tremendous working knowledge of other teams’ needs to turn that chip into a pair of immediate impact starters who will make the Vikings better from Day 1.

Coming away with LT Matt Kalil and S Harrison Smith from the 1st round of the 2012 NFL Draft is a 100% win for the Vikings, a team coming off a 3-13 record and looking for players to plug into the starting lineup.

As Radio Voice of the Vikings Paul Allen explained on his show page, the outstanding outcome did not arrive on accident. Leveraging a pair of teams who each reside in the Top 5 is not always an easy prospect, and selling many big-hitting national reporters from across the country on our supposed serious interest in taking CB Morris Claiborne ahead of Kalil was perfectly timed. But Spielman was able to do it.

And it all resulted in a terrific trade for the Vikings at the top of the 1st round in which Cleveland shipped 4th-round, 5th-round and 7th-round picks to Minnesota in exchange for the right to select RB Trent Richardson. Oh, and by the way, the Vikings were still able to get the player they coveted all along in Kalil. Then later in the 1st round, the Vikings traded up from the 2nd round back into the 1st round to add another player on their wish list – Smith.

“This is what makes the draft so fun,” Spielman said on Thursday evening. “The moving up and down and accumulating picks then using those picks to potentially move back up if you target a player. I know the depth at safety in this draft was very slim. We wanted to make sure that we started on our secondary and improving that area. We feel very strongly that Harrison will definitely do that.”

Vikings fans must be feeling great about where their team stands after the 1st round because two major needs were addressed. With 9 selections remaining in the last 6 rounds of the 2012 NFL Draft, it will be interesting to what kind of tricks the Vikings can pull from their sleeve next.

Great first round for the Vikes! You gotta hand it to Spielman, get Kalil and 3 additional picks in the process. That’s brilliant!

Mr. Smith goes to Washington…err..I mean Minnesota. Seems like the Vikes got their second round wish by trading up. Will we he have to be nicknamed “AD”? Cause he is going to be out there all day on defense. There will be no Manti Te’o,RJ Blanton and company. He will have to talk to Mistral and see how that no one on Vikings D doesn’t “got your back”.

Brilliant! Everyone was doubting Spielman as GM when he was considering blackmon and claiborne and now we can see the man’s a genius! Harrison Smith is suchhhh a good pickup for us, so excited to see him this year. Hopefully we can move into the second round to nab either a CB or LB. I can’t say how excited I am for this season just after the 1st round. Keep it coming!

  21. By Mike R. on Apr 27, 2012 | Reply

Could have had H Smith in 2nd…no need to trade up…if he was gone…he was in weak S class. He is now 1st round pick and should be starter right away and be expected to contribute. Anything less than his Jr. season will be considered “reaching for the stars”…

As i said yesterday, i believe Spielman is doing a very solid job, which has now been accentuated by this excellent (on paper_ 1st round draft. Hope these 2 turn out to be as good as they are supposed to.

  23. By Taysa on Apr 27, 2012 | Reply

    Mike R,

We only moved up 5 spots to get the guy. Not sure how that could possibly translate to “reaching for the stars.” Safety was a huge need for us, and we addressed it with the 2nd best safety in the draft. I am extremely pleased with how round 1 went.

FYI seven guys I wanted, Matt Kalil, Morris Claiborn, Stephon Gilmore, Dre Kirkpatrick, (sigh) Blackmon, Harrison Smith, David Decastro (if we picked Claiborn first, and he was available second round)

Safety was/is need in Vikes draft. Could have been there in their Rd 2 pick. Could have had him still without giving up pick(s). But not sure he is going into system where they teach to tackle cause you are on your own. He may be prouct of system of Notre Dame. They had supporting cast at ND where he did not have to worry we have other S or CB to support you.

He is number 1 pick…anything less would be reaching considering weak safety class

Good first round but I think they could have gotten Smith for no. 35 and 118 and maybe a 6th rounder. Now what are they going to do after no 66? They don’t have another pick until 118. That’s 52 spots.

CB Jamell Fleming is a physical and explosive athlete who can jam receivers and bring down running backs with ease. Fleming has played at a high level for Oklahoma over the last 4 years. He is best in man coverage but looked good at the Senior Bowl when the Vikings’ coaches asked him to play off in zone. Many scouts have a late 2nd round grade on him… and project Fleming as an early starter at the next level.

Keep an eye on Fleming if he is still on the board at 66.

Great draft so far if i was the vikes i may have tried to ge DeCastro a lilttle be4 we got Smith, that would have been a dominatiing left side of the line WOW, but he Harrison Smith is a man and of the tape i have seen he is very good in coverage and tackling. Now hopefully Jenkins Falls to us in the 3rd or T.Johnson, or if we wanted we could trade-up and get Zach Brown, Brandon Thompson, Andre Branch, or We could stay and take Quick or Dennard ? idk what we will do i just know it should be a good weekend

CB’s jamell fleming / brandon boykin
DT’s derick wolfe / devon still

Great draft so far Rick !!…

Just hoping the Vikings stay patient from this point on…And let the extra picks Spielman got from the Browns pay off for us…The Vikings coaching the senior bowl week..Is already paying dividends…And that coaching knowledge from that senior bowl week will only pay off that much more as the draft progresses…

    M Kalil and H Smith…Great start Rick…

Vikings have struck gold early…Hoping Rick sits back now and lets the draft unfold a little in the second round…And lets some players fall through the cracks into the 3rd round…And get a nice WR,CB,LB or DT…

Plenty of needs yet…Keep those picks Rick…

All in all spielman did well i give him an A- on the draft thus far. My only reason for that grade is i think they could have possibly done differently with the trade from Cleavland but i wasn’t in the room and i don’t make those decisions good job Mr. Spielman on your first round of your first draft as a vikings GM In my enthusiastic opinion just the 2 men they drafted yesterday will make the team better from day 1

  38. By Rick on Apr 27, 2012 | Reply

Maybe with the way this draft has swung so far the team should focus mainly on the defense for the remainder unless some awesome value picks on offense show up. Now that the blind side for ponder should be solid having a stingy defense could help take a lot of the pressure off his shoulders. IMO

Carl, I liked what I saw on the Fleming kid – if he is still around at 66, I think they should jump all over him. Would also like to see a receiver or two taken – big body Sidney Rice type receivers. If Simpson can stay out of trouble and produce, I can see them trying to ink him to a long term deal which would take care of the speed/field stretching WR for the next 3-4 years.

Tax talks trump stadium hearingWork on changing Minnesota tax laws took precedence Thursday over considering a new Vikings stadium. “We can only do so much at one time,” Senate Tax Chairwoman Julianne Ortman, R-Chanhassen, said.

ST. PAUL – Work on changing Minnesota tax laws took precedence Thursday over considering a new Vikings stadium.

“We can only do so much at one time,” Senate Tax Chairwoman Julianne Ortman, R-Chanhassen, said.

She said her tax committee will not take up the stadium proposal before progress is made on a tax bill, including provisions such as providing tax breaks for business investors.

The senator said her priority is the tax bill, but denied holding the stadium bill hostage in order to get support for tax changes.

Ortman’s Tax Committee had planned to debate the bill, but did not meet Thursday.

The bill needs to go through the committee before the full Senate can vote on it. It is unclear when the plan could come up for discussion.

Ortman, the deputy Senate majority leader, is involved in high-level talks with Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton and other legislative leaders that center on public works projects and tax changes.

Bill author Sen. Julie Rosen, R-Fairmont, said the stadium likely will be one of the last bills debated this year, but the self-imposed Monday deadline for the session to wrap up is quickly approaching.

Minnesota Vikings stadium bill not ready for hearing yetAssociated Press
    Published: April 27, 2012 at 03:10 a.m. Updated: April 27, 2012 at 09:17 a.m

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Most Republican lawmakers who control Minnesota’s Legislature never met a tax increase they liked, but a handful said Thursday that the state’s portion of the cost of a new Minnesota Vikings stadium should be funded with new taxes on the team and its fans — rather than with revenue from an expansion of legal gambling.

It was the latest twist in the stadium bill’s rocky ride at the Minnesota Capitol. The bill’s rapid-fire progress of recent days slowed noticeably Thursday, with an expected hearing in the Senate Taxes Committee delayed until at least Friday. That leaves a shrinking window of time to get the $1 billion stadium proposal to the desk of a supportive Gov. Mark Dayton, with legislative leaders aiming to finish up their 2012 session by Monday at midnight.

Dayton and other stadium supporters contend failure to act this year could cost Minnesota its NFL franchise.

The delay in the Senate, as supporters worked to get the bill in good enough shape to survive a grilling from numerous stadium critics on the panel, also slowed the bill in the House where it awaits a floor vote. The chief House sponsor, Rep. Morrie Lanning, said a House vote was not likely until the stadium bill clears the Senate’s committee process.

DRS – We need to bring down the house/senate. Election season is coming up and I know I don’t want people in office who think their personal interest take presidence over the public’s interest. I mean after all they are the “peoples” government, right?? We as Minnesotans need to hold them to that. I for one am sick of politicians deciding what is best for the people they represent. Listen to the people!! We don’t pay them to make up our minds, we pay them to listen to us and act upon our wishes… Politics has gotten so far away from what it was intended to be. Instead of the greater community running this country/state, we have the 1% running it and telling us what to do. Enough is enough! We should start a sit in at the capitol.

they can use their 4th and 5th round picks to grab OL such as senio kelemete, tom compton, zebrie sanders, andrew datko, james brown, brandon washington.they can sign atowge and bob sanders to a 1-yr deal to stretch the competition to safety and sign phillip merlin DT to fix that DT need in the free agency.now the OT and SS need has been taken care of, the top needs are WR and CB.if there is a WR or CB that i would move in the 2nd round for, it would janoris jenkins, trumaine johnson (can convert to FS or SS), alshon jeffery, and maybe reuben randle.

the question is with two compensatory 4th round picks, can they use those to capture multiple receivers or multiple cornerbacks.if that is the case, they can move to grab a receiver in the 2nd round and use their compensatory picks to draft cornerbacks (ryan steed, asa jackson), or they move up to grab janoris jenkins and use their compensatory picks to grab mulitple receiver (nick toon, marvin mcnutt).

(about Charlie Johnson) “Not necessarily leave him at left tackle. I want us to get some competition there and maybe even be able to take a look at him at left guard. He’s done it. He’s done it well in Indy, and we think he can do it at our place as well. So, if that’s going to make us better by getting a better left tackle than Charlie was at left tackle and be able to move him to guard, then that’s the way you do it…..”

(about Ponder) “He needs time, and we’ve got to surround him with the right weapons in key spots and make sure that our offensive line is the way we need it to be so that he doesn’t begin to get happy feet and lose confidence if he feels like he has to get rid of the ball sooner than he needs to and I can’t go through my reads, can’t do the things that a quarterback has to do.”

    — Those two would heavily suggest OT Matt Kalil will be the selection at #3

    Another quote:

(about Safety position) “We’ve got 10 picks, but you wonder how big of an impact they’ll make in that first year as a whole. So, hopefully, the safety position — whoever we take at safety — will be one of those that has a big impact on our team, and some of that depends on how high you take the guy sometimes. But whoever we draft at safety probably needs to come in and have an impact for us.”

    — This would suggest that the Vikings will be very interested in landing either S Mark Barron or S Harrison Smith because he said its a huge area of need and whoever they draft will need to come in and contribute right away….. you’ll need a good safety to do that and those two are the prospects that can be just that.

What about WR…… read this next qoute:

(about WR position) “It’s a pretty deep group. Watching them at the combine and now from our coaches going out to visit some of them. We think we’re going to be able to get a real good receiver in this draft. The fact that we’re picking as high as we are in each round and now we’ve got these multiple choices in the fourth round, we think we’re going to have a chance to get one of these good receivers.”

    — Since he mentions “deep group” and addressed having multiple 4th round selections…… we could very well see the Vikings address the WR position within the 4 selections we have in rounds 3-4.

Bottom line the top of the draft could look like:

    1st – OT Matt Kalil
    2nd(or trading into 1st) – S Mark Barron or S Harrison Smith
3rd-4th (4 picks) – combination of WRs, CBs, and BPA if someone is too good to pass up that has slipped in the draft.

Don’t be surprised if Mr. Spielman makes a few more trades-Vikings have tons of picks in Rounds 4-7. We could easily give up a few of them to jump up in Rounds 2 or 3 if we see someone there we may like. I like the Round 1 picks-two glaring needs hopefully filled.

If MN builds a stadium, they will come. Legislators with their heads up their hind ends-just ask them how the North Star situation turned out.

So, I am curious to see if Spielman doesn’t pull another trade-up to get a second round pick to ensure we get the CB or a decent WR. The fact that we are not in the second round now makes that an interesting prospect. Because we added thos additional picks from trading down in the 1st round will be a bargaining chip to use. I for one and very pleased to see Spielman knock the first 2 pick out of the park. For those of you still crying at Claiborne going to the Cowboys, don’t worry as we are going to own them this next year. Keep bleeding purple! Nuf said!

Can’t trade comp pick… the Vikings are stuck with picks 128 and 134. However, the Vikings can use a 5th round pick (138 or 139) to move up from pick 119.

I don’t look for the Vikings to trade up from 66… but trading up from 119 might happen.

The Vikings can move up about 15 spots from 119 if they trade one of the 5th round picks. If they throw in a 6th or 7th, they could jump back into the top 100.

Don’t get me wrong… I am not saying they should do it… I am just suggesting that that would be the most likely time the Vikings would trade up again.

He does not get the credit he deserves.

    Fun fact…

Remember a blog some time back…Where Andy and the Eagles remarked they needed to use a higher draft pick to get a QB to back up Vick…Not a first round pick..But maybe a second or third round choice to obtain a QB…

I still think J Webb would be the perfect fit in Eagle country…Vick always gets hurt…And Webb plays very well coming into games from the bench…And has such a similar talent levels to that of Vick…Mobily, speed, etc…

Is there any interest in a trade between the Eagles and the Vikings for
    J Webb ???…

Vikings have Sage to back up Ponder…Do they think that is plenty if they get another rookie QB late in this draft…

Not trying to start any rumors…But sometimes things just make sense…This trade happening does make sense to me…

We have greater need on defense yet anyways. CB, LB and DT all could use an upgrade. We should address one of them with our next pick, and then see if there’s a good WR after that. The next 4-picks (3rd, 4th, c4th, c4th) should be able to address each of these needs and set us up well for the rebuilding process.

parody- it would not suprise me if hill is gone early, i also forgot to mention alshon jeffery. I could see the Vikes making a move to get up into the 2nd round either early or mid. dont forget we have 10 picks left so i think two 4ths and a sweetener pick would be enough to get up into the top of the 2nd round for a wr. wr is now our biggest need, and should be the first thing addressed today! DT can wait till the 4th or 5th round, ILB isn’t that big of a need, and the Smith pick was phenomenal and shored up part of our d-backfield. I would save the corner for the 3rd or 4th. This draft is about getting ponder a #1 receiver for weapons, and i believe Sdealman is going to stay true to that and trade up into the 2nd round to get either Hill,Jeffery or Randle. who knows maybe even nick toon if he is available in the 3rd. Harvin cannot be our #1 receiver at 5-11. we need one of these three WR in the 2nd and we are going to have to give up the picks we got in trades from yesterday to get us one of them.

LB is a much bigger question. Who is our starting ILB? What proof do you have that he can handle it for an entire year? Is Erin good enough to be our long term solution on the outside? Who are their backups???

I think it would be a waste of a pick to choose a kicker this year. Longwell was almost 80% last year, no reason to pay someone to pick his nose this year. Kickers don’t “mature” watching another kicker. Kickers are like milk – you don’t stock up on milk, you go get more when you run out.

We can get one in next year’s draft.

  174. By Parody on Apr 27, 2012 | Reply

If anything, the only extra help Ponder needs this year is on the line. Loadholt is still a huge question mark. Left guard is anything but certain. But I think that the addition of Kalil makes the entire group much better. A guard with a compensatory 4th or later should be enough to push the others to improve.

Get a WR in later rounds to groom into an eventual starter while you have a decent receiving corps of Harvin-Rudolph-Carlson-Simpson-Jenkins-Aromashodu. Between those six, I think he’s due to have a much improved sophómore year.

Northwoods – I recall that the coaches were too timid to put Longwell in for kicks over 45-yards though. He has the accuracy, but not the strength. Too often the kickoff didn’t even get into the endzone, and that’s with the extra 5-yards they gave him this year.

It’s true, you don’t overstock milk. But you also stop driking it when it goes sour. I’ve been getting a bad taste from Longwell for the past two years, and now I think he might start to curdle. I say that it’s time to throw the old stuff out and go get a new bottle.

If they do pick one up they should let Longwell go. It would be silly to have 2 on the roster.

I’d really like to see us trade up and grab a CB in the 2nd……after that the best WR available, then add depth to defense with BPAs.

  185. By Parody on Apr 27, 2012 | Reply

…with kickers though, it seems better to compare them to bananas. You generally buy them while they’re still green, and give them time to mature. Then you throw them out when they start to get bruised and soft.

I think Longwell is a squishy black banana right now…

  186. By TheValentine84 on Apr 27, 2012 | Reply

If somehow Alshon slips into the late 2nd round I would be all for moving up to grab him. If not, stay put and maybe grab Quick if he’s there, a CB like Minniefield, or a LB like Spence, Bradham, or Davis

Im seriously disgusted by the fact that most Viking fans hate the Harrison Smith pick- calling it a huge reach.

  188. By NorthwoodsVikesFan on Apr 27, 2012 | Reply

The problem I see with Longwell, is that nobody else will sign him, so we’re stuck paying his final year either way. To pay ANOTHER kicker at the same time just seems like a big waste of money.

I like the banana ideology, though.

  189. By Parody on Apr 27, 2012 | Reply

Northwoods – I completely agree. That’s part of the reason we should be getting a new kicker, so we can cut the current one. He is making around $3M a year and isn’t producing enough to justify it. He’s one of the first players I’d get rid of as a cap casualty, right up there with Frampton.

  190. By TheValentine84 on Apr 27, 2012 | Reply

The Smith pick was by no means a reach. We essentially assured we got him with our 2nd round pick by using one of the free kalil picks. 1st round picks are usually expected to be a starter, and these two guys filled our 2 biggest needs.

  191. By Parody on Apr 27, 2012 | Reply

Joe F – I don’t think that will happen. If Bowe doesn’t sign the tag, he can’t play at all for 2012. Then, what team will give him the type of contract he wants after he’s been out of the league for a year?

I think he knuckles under and plays one last with the Chiefs, and then finds a new team. Not sure if it should be the Vikings, now that I know he has that kind of attitude.

  192. By tmoneyyo on Apr 27, 2012 | Reply

Parody- Simpson is out the first 3 games and that fact that you call him a #1 receiver puzzles me. Jeffery/Randle/Hill would be an improvment over him. He is a solid #2 flanker and with him, harvin and maybe on of the above mentioned could give us a solid wr corps. its all about giving ponder weapons, i get that the wr depth is good in this draft but if you want to get him a true playmaker i believe one of these guys can do it. the only alternative pick i would make would be trading up for jenkins/glenn. You cant base drafting off of 1st and 2nd round talent that are currently on the roster. that is bush league thinking when it comes to drafting. Erin Henderson was pretty good for us this year and his one year prove it deal he got will tell us more about him. i believe he is our guy there. brinkley held down the fort at ILB when EJ got hurt in 2009 and played well enough to be the starter going into camp and that we shouldnt take a ILB before the 4th round. Spielman isnt looking for a wr to groom into a potential starter he is going to go get someone that can step in now. unless they are sure he is the next marques colston or donald driver waiting till the late rounds to pick up a wr, our biggest need right now, is a waste of a pick. that pick will prob be a practice squad guy. if he didnt want to get ponder weapons he wouldn’t have even considered blackmon at 4 like he did. I think we see a wr pick first today, followed by corner, defensive tackle, ILB and a late round change of pace RB. I respect your opinion and there is some validity and good thinking behind it but it doesnt make sense to not address the wr need we have, this team had no one to throw to other than harvin last year, we need an early receiver

  193. By Parody on Apr 27, 2012 | Reply

That’s not quite true Northwoods. My understanding is that if nobody picks him up, we’re stuck paying the bonus for the final two years of the contract. That’s reportedly $875K, but still saves the team $2.5 and $2.75M in the next two years, respectively.

tmoneyyo – Aromashodu and Jenkins were decent targets last year. They easily qualify as solid #3 and #4 options. The problem is that they were expected to be the #1 and #2/3 players for most games. Johnson may not be the ideal #1, but he is a big upgrade for what we had last year.

Meanwhile, our LBs were poor, eveidenced by the fact that so many first downs were achieved by throws to the underneath receiver against us over the past few years. CBs and Ss need an upgrade too. We got the Safety upgrade, CBs may be better this year, but I’m still skeptical, and they would definitely be better with a solid 3rd rounder.

Unlike some I dont give respect … people have to earn respect

Chris Cook … I have no respect … but he could earn respect

Spielman … was the VP of player personnel and we were an awful team with no talent or personnel … so he didnt get my respect. HOWEVER HE IS STARTING TO EARN IT.

All the offseason moves only matter next season. The draft is a cra’p shoot so however unlikely Spielman may still end up cra’p = time will tell

True aromashadu played decently last year but he is a journey man. jenkins is a busted ex 1st rounder who isnt all that special. simpson is definitely a good pick up and improvment but by no means is he a #1 receiver. I think Jeffery or Hill have true #1 talent and to come out of this weekend with Kalil, Smith and a big name WR would give us 3 immediate starters and would possibly give this team its best chance of winning. I think the corners we have now can be good, cook has shown promise and asher allen needs to play better, im a big fan of sherels and hopefully he continues to get better and gets more opportunities. An ILB would be nice in the 4th if we dont trade up for a WR otherwise if we do trade up for a WR taking an ILB in the 3rd would be a great spot to take one. get a DT in the 4th-5th round range, 5th or 6th on a change of pace back, then maybe a fullback ( Bradie Ewing from wisconsin is a gooooood fullback, good football player). another DB would be good too

and the reason why it may seem that our LB play the last two years was poor was because we had terrible defensive back play. they had to drop back into mid to deep pass coverage a lot of times because none of our CB/S’s could cover anyone. Erin is a great OLB and Greenway is a pro bowl caliber OLB. EJ leaving isnt good but brinkley can get the job at least for one year i believe. take a high pick or FA on a ILB next year.

The Browns trade added one more (#100).

And the trade to get Smith dropped us back down to three (giving up #98).

So 3 4th-rounders is what we have left. BUT, from the compensatory picks into the fifth round, we have 4 picks within 12 selections. Unless there’s a lot of people we are interested in at that area of the draft, we could trade one or both of the 5ths to move another position up a bit.

We could give Jenkins a big contract, cut Winfield, and have a great improvement on defense, while possibly even seeing a drop in the team salary for the first year or two.

I wasn’t happy about the Cook Pick, wasn’t happy about Gerhart, wasn’t happy with taking Ponder so early last year, and didn’t think that Rudolf was really the best player as far as need and talent with what was left at that spot last year, but this year I think he drafted excellent. We got Kalil, got some extra picks, then came back and got another guy who should plug and play going into this season. If we can find 2 more first season starters in this draft, I give it an A+

After a few early jitters (“So happy to play in the great city of Minnesota”) he just floored me with how he gave the perfect answer to every single question. I can see this guy being a team captain in just a few short years.

Plus, I think he may have inadvertantly found himself a nickname on the team already! Check out the video at about 5:50, the reporter sets him up for it asking if he’s a “low key” offensive lineman, to which Matt replies “Yea, definitely I’m Loki.”

At any rate, I did find the definition of demise to be “convey” alone; however, an amendment is that it is considered obsolete in such usage. I read in the front of this monster lexicon that obsolete designation means such usage has not occurred since 1755.

Vikings, NFL want legislative vote on stadium bill
Posted by Mike Florio on April 19, 2012, 6:51 PM EDT

“I don’t want to get into that, and I haven’t prepared an answer for it,” Grubman said. “I will say simply that the Minnesota Vikings are going to play a full season in 2012 on this schedule that was announced two nights ago. And I hope and expect that they’ll be playing in the Metrodome. If for any reason they can’t, they will still play their games. . . . That’s a sideshow to the sideshow. Let’s keep our eyes focused on the goal line. The goal line is let’s get a reasonable stadium deal done for all parties, and let’s get it done as soon as possible. And if it can’t be done, then we’ll turn to alternatives.”
Those alternatives likely include selling the team to a local buyer, selling the team to a buying who would move the team, or moving the team with its current ownership.

Later tonight (ideally), I’ll put together a list of questions and answers aimed at helping folks in Minnesota and elsewhere understand how things got to this point, and where things could go from here.

SAM FARMER / ON THE NFL By Sam Farmer April 20, 2012, 9:38 p.m.

As some signs point to the Minnesota Vikings entertaining a move to L.A., others point to the team staying put. A pow-wow Friday doesn’t exactly clear things up.

But don’t be so quick to dismiss the latest Minnesota meltdown as another hollow threat. The facts that the NFL has gotten heavily involved and that Vikings owner Zygi Wilf is said to be beyond frustrated, makes this a development worth watching.

    OVERVIEW
Robinson was a three-year starter with good ball skills and athletic ability. He has prototypical size and speed. Fifth-round value.

    ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS Robinson has displayed superb zone skills. Aside from length, where he is only average, he has all the traits sought after in a zone corner. Not as polished in man, but he can run with receivers in the open field and will likely run in the 4.4 range at the combine. A reliable tackler in run support.
WEAKNESSES Robinson struggled at times playing man coverage. He will hesitate at times when diagnosing throws or trying to read his man’s hips, and will guess on jumping routes which could be a risk at the next level. Struggles to make plays in run support after shedding his man, and will need to be more assertive in that area of his game.

Smith is not a first round pick. He is not a game changer like a first round pick is supposed to be. I guarantee he would have been available with our original third pick in the second round to take if we were set on taking him. There was no need to trade up to take him. I thought for sure Vikes were gonna take Upshaw or David when I saw they traded up. David would’ve been a great pick and been a leader and game changer on our defense. And tonight’s third round pick, Josh Robinson? Speed or not, this is not exciting at all and doesn’t make sense. He is only 5″10 and does not fit into our defensive scheme. We play a lot of cover 2 not man-to-man. We have so many picks coming up why didn’t Spielman trade some away to get another pick tonight and draft an impact player? Year after year the Vikings disappoint as they do not draft well.

The Vikings seem to have drafted very well within the first two days.

Let’s try to be happy with what this team becomes, and hopefully that’s a group of guys with TEAMWORK!!!

    GENTLEMEN,
I AM AS GUILTY AS ANYONE OF CALLING NAMES.
BUT WE MAY HAVE A GOOD TEAM THIS YEAR (8-8 because of the new schedule),

SO LET’S NOT USE THE S O P H O M O R I C IDEA OF CALLING VIKINGS PLAYERS, FRONT OFFICE PERSONNEL, COACHES, OR FANS ANY NAMES.
WE MUST TRULY BE A TEAM!!!

Oz– Perrier is sold around the globe almost like Coke and Pepsi– sorry- I thought you were playing with me. I drink here and there, mostly during travel or weddings or such)– but I really don’t like altering my mood– I am content with or without it. Actually, I am in a long dry spell right now. I will have to be careful when I meet Sonja for our first date and drink slowly.

Funny story though– I had a student (International) and she saw me drinking a 16oz Perrier- it’s in a green bottle. After some time, she asked if it was beer.

    @Jason,

If you preruse the rosters of NFL teams, you will notice that many of the CBs are around 5-9 to 5-11. They have to be quick, act and react, to everything that an offense may try to pull on them. A tall man could do it also, but there is less glory in playing DB.

Let’s get behind these players. Haven’t we learned that it doesn’t do any good to fight against our own team. We must be a TEAM this year.

I see 8-8 for this season. (Easy schedule, low expectations)

    @ozzinator,

I’m glad people are optimistic, but these guys are young. In addition, we want the Vikings to build slowly so we can return to the glory days of the 1960-90s.

Selecting Free Agents just seems to HOLD DOWN AND HOLD BACK teams.

The reasons are usually cost, cost, and cost!!

Oz– I had plenty of wild days. But rarely having alcohol does not mean I am good or bad.
