Don’t Blink; Vikings Select CB Robinson, Draft’s Fastest Prospect

Posted by Mike Wobschall on April 27, 2012 – 8:39 pm

The Vikings continued to navigate through the 2012 NFL Draft with efficiency and grace on Friday night, addressing another position of need with the selection of speedy CB Josh Robinson in the 3rd round (66th overall). The selection of Robinson represents the second likely impact player the Vikings have added to their secondary is as many days.

“Josh is a very athletic player with dynamic speed and outstanding quickness, burst and change of direction skills,” Vikings DBs coach Joe Woods told me on Friday night. “His best football is ahead of him. His man coverage skill is a plus for us, and at 5-10, 199 pounds he’s a solidly-built guy.”

Robinson, the fastest player at this year’s Combine with a 4.29 time in the 40-yard dash, will compete for time at CB and he will also be an option for the Vikings as a punt returner. Asked if he minded sharing Robinson with special teams coach Mike Priefer, Woods quickly said: “The more you can do, the more value you have.”

An experienced and productive player out of the University of Central Florida, Robinson started the final 11 games of his true freshman season in 2009 and then started 25 games over his final two seasons at UCF. As a freshman Robinson recorded 69 tackles, 8 passes broken up (PBU) and 6 INTs. In 2010 Robinson tallied 59-13-2, and in 2011 he recorded 48-15-2. Robinson led the team in PBUs in both 2010 and 2011.

Many draft observers listed Robinson as a 2nd-round prospect, but the Vikings sat tight in the early stages of the 3rd round and didn’t hesitate to put his name on their card.

“The 38 1/2 vertical, the 4.29 speed, what you see on tape, we had one of our coaches who did work down at Central Florida, we had a lot of contacts down there,” Vikings GM Rick Spielman said. “The kid is an outstanding character kid, fitting into the bill what we’ve been trying to do. Excellent work habits, everything you’re looking for in a young player that’s going to continue to have tremendous upside.

“We’re excited to get Josh. Extremely talented athlete. He’s a junior that’s coming out early. When you look at his tape, he has some unique cover skills. He’s more than willing enough to come up in support. Just like in most of the juniors, they’re going to have some flaws that can get corrected with coaching but just tremendous upside with Josh.”

What are the plans for him, Wobbs?

Is he going to be in the slot, or is he gonna be starting opposite of Chris Cook?

I’d love to hear your input.

Not gonna name names or anything (I was as guilty as anyone) but I do have to say, the way the Spielman has handled this draft – and free agency – has brought me around. Getting talented young players at the proper positions, without breaking the bank to do it. Keep up the great work!

  49. By Parody on Apr 27, 2012 | Reply

If it’s Streeter, he can be gotten with a compensatory 4th. Right now, we have to take Massie, just for the sake of BPA. He should have been gone in the early 2nd round. He could be the replacement so many people have been begging for at RT, or maybe he can step in at guard.

Either way, he and Kalil would improve the OLine so much that Ponder would be able to take a nap while waiting for guys to get open.

What about BJ Cunningham, Mich St ?

First half of season nothing really. Second half he finally “got it”. TDs and yards. Even had TD in East West shrine game.

I like how the draft has been going. We have a lot of picks left and I wish we could get some future starters at LB and WR. Might seem far fetched but it is possible. Much easier said than done however. Then with whatever we have left start adding some raw athletic guys who can contribute on special teams and hopefully develop into something.

    @Spencer and Parody,

By now you KNOW my answer to your recent posts about me!

The Vikings are not done yet, an offensive guard must be selected soon. We can fill the rest of our needs now with young players.

The coaches will still need to help them develop, which will take time. We will finish 8-8 this year because of the easier schedule!

WE DO NOT WANT ANY FREE AGENTS NOW. It should be universal knowledge that it is a quick way to ruin any franchise.

The reason is usually COST, COST, or indeed COST!!!

It also gives a brief overview of Robinson. Saying that his biggest flaw is a coachable fix, and he has all the potential to be a starting calibur CB.

It should be a much improved defensive backfield this year.

I like Juron Criner… I think he will be a good 4th… I also like the idea of Massie as well.

Also Criner is tall like what 6’4? pretty athletic many thought he could be a sidney rice type.

Id be leaning at Criner. Deceant speed and great height and he has great hands !

  77. By Carl K on Apr 27, 2012 | Reply

WRs still on the board…. Chris Givens, Marvin Jones, Juron Criner, Greg Childs, Joe Adams, Marvin McNutt, Nick Toon…

Or is Joe Webb at WR a better option? We could draft QB Kirk Cousins.

A lot of LBs still on the board… Ronnell Lewis, Travis Lewis, James Micheal Johnson, Audie Cole, Nigel Bradham, Terrell Manning or Vontze Burfict

I think the Vikings will trade up get the guy they covet most.

It actually looks like we will have a good possibly great defensive backfield this year, it has been a long , with all that coverage it gives more time to J. Allen and Co to get to the QB. One more day, c’mon Vikes, grab that Bull by the Horns, one more time to make great picks.

Loveing the draft so far. Maybe draft CB Josh Norman in the 4th, then OL Tom Compton 4th, DT DaJohn Harris 4th(previously called him JaRon Harris), LB Tank Carder 5th, LB Nigel Bradham 5th, WR Chris Owusu 6th, WR Dale Moss 7th, Kicker 7th, Best DLinemen or OLinemen 7th. Here is a thought what if RB Lamar Miller falls to are first 4th rounder his value would be to good to pass up being as he was graded as a 2nd rounder.

Did Longwell not resign? I wasn’t aware of that. I think our next pick would best be served with either best WR available or best LB. I think our secondary with Harrison Smith, Chris Cook, and Josh Robinson (not to mention some OTA time), and I guess WInfield for the nickle, is looking MUCH MUCH MUCH better. Probably going to need to develop as the season goes on. Kalil at OT, Phil Loadhoalt, Sully, I’m guess Schwartz / Johnson and Fusco (hey the kid opened some holes last year) is going to make a good line. We still have Toby, Adrian, and Percy as some major weapons. I would also assume Joe Webb will take some receiver snaps with his Blazer package snaps. So far so good.

At least Robinson can run with any WR (Greg Jennings anyone ). He could be the fastest player on the team, too. Hopefully our coaches can turn him into a solid starter, because I hate it to see our backfield getting burned all the time…

Cyrus Gray would be an upgrade in that department. We need a RB that can pick up a blitz… But he also needs to be threat with the b a l l.

Say what you want, We had bad protection or bad QB play. Fact is, our receivers had chances to make plays and they failed to do so. If the other receivers on the roster failed to beat out the ones that actually played then whats that say about their ability? Outside Percy and now Jerome Simpson, and maybe Jenkins I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt because he got injured, I dont like any other receiver on the roster.

OTK- But at least Streeter wont cost us a top 10 pick. All I’m saying is you never know who could end up being a great player, you never know who could end up being a bust either.

OTK I told the other day that M. Maze can catch anything thrown his way, never drops nothing. Big part of the bama offense

One other item I would like to mention, is that the RENO Nv, paper RGJ, has or did have, a feature on their blogs a section at the lead that stated: “Go to last entry”.. Punch that and you arrive at the Last Entry posted!

Would sure like to see that improvement on this site…Then you wouldn’t have to wade thru 1000 posts to see what is what. You could also backtrack from the last entry to find YOUR last entry, then procees to read replies to your last post!

    Carl K…

Like your Cyrus Gray pick…Could see the Vikes pulling the trigger on him in the late 4th to early 5th round area…

    There is some CB’s I like yet also..D Menzie,B Boykin,J Norman

Frad may be right…I can see 3 solid OT’s still on the board minimum..
B Massie,Z Sanders, and hometown favorite of mine T Compton…

    GDP…You are sooo right…Look out for S Spence in a Steelers uniform..ouch

GDP…When it comes to “hand eye coordination” and or
“depth perception”…A football player either has it…Or doesn’t…Its not something that can be coached or learned…

Ability in some talent levels is a God given gift…

I really like M Maze…I have seen him play quite a bit…Hands like glue…And always find the soft spot in a defense…QB friendly.. ; )

Like I said yesterday, I went to high school with Josh Robinson he also has great hands. He played WR!

    Maze perfect back-up for Percy!

    Stew…

That would be great if Josh has good hands…We could use some ints this coming season…. : )

Maze and Wylie are smaller frame…But both are good receivers…

I bet you the Pats grab one of them to replace W Welker…The Hoody doesn’t like paying veterans money…Maze or Wylie would be good replacements for what Welker does in the Pats offense…

1 hr away…And then we get to see if the senior bowl coaching staff has found us some “diamonds in the rough” for the team…

Rounds 4-5 is where we need to find some gold…

    Go Spielman and Frazier !!!…

Mr Singletary…Find us a hidden gem in the LB’s left in this draft !!!

GET TA’AMU TODAY! WE NEED A BEAST UP FRONT ON “D”!!!

Robinson is a terrific athlete. No doubt about it. But, it was still an interesting decision from the Vikes. After making some very savvy moves on Thursday, Friday played out like so many drafts of years ago. No movement. Waiting for the guy we “wanted.” We covered this at BorderRivals: http://wp.me/p29VCs-7Y. What is tough to figure out, why not go get a guy like Hayward (guy the Pack drafted) or Randle (stud LSU WR)? The cost was nothing, but the return seems higher than what we got with Robinson. Hopefully, Frazier and Spielman can dig up a hidden gem or two in round 4!!

I definitely think we could use Dale Moss on the outside. Runs a 4.5 40, great hands, 6’4″

Ponder suxs at what? He had the highest ranking IQ making him the smartest player of that draft! Building a better team around him only helps him to be among the elite!
