Kalil Joins Proud Vikings-USC Fraternity

Posted by Mike Wobschall on April 26, 2012 – 7:29 pm

The Vikings made Matt Kalil the 1st-round choice on Thursday evening, and in so doing they ushered Kalil into a decorated and proud fraternity of both 1st-round offensive linemen from USC and Vikings offensive linemen drafted in the 1st round.

Kalil is the 17th USC OT selected in the 1st round since 1968, and the second USC OT selected with a 1st round pick in the last two years (Tyron Smith – Dallas Cowboys). He’s also the fifth USC player selected in the 1st round in Vikings franchise history and the eighth offensive linemen selected with a 1st-round pick in franchise history.

Take a look…

USC Players Drafted In 1st Round By Vikings
– OT Ron Yary #1 overall in 1968
– OT Steve Riley #25 overall in 1974
– S Joey Browner #19 overall in 1983
– DE Kenechi Udeze #20 overall in 2004

Vikings Offensive Linemen Drafted In 1st Round

– Todd Steussie (California) #19 overall in 1994

The Vikings now have a grade of C for picking Kalil.

Someone said my grading system does not make sense. But not all the draft picks are in yet!!!

It should be easy for the Vikings to pick 1 more OL and 2 DBs in the top four rounds of the draft. My hope is that they concentrate that, and do not get divergent in there thinking towards “skill position” players.

The Vikings could get an A for this draft very easily!!!

While the OT pickup may not be the flashy pick (and not the route I would have went) I love trading back into the first (I called that trade by the way – look at the “Boys are back in town” blog – just got the player wrong) and grabbing a S. I expect the Vikes to trade up again tomorrow into the early second and grab a WR (Jeffery would be a solid addition). Keep it up Spielman – give you an A so far!

The reason why Vikings should of drafted Clairborne iis beacuse I know that for the fact Winifield is not going to be the same as he was before. He is 38 years old and the injury has been hitting him hard. He is getting slow, and I am not sure what will Chris Cook will give us. I know he was a good CB before he got in trouble but will he still be good? He is still a 50/50 chance that he will or he will not be a an elite CB. I did not say that Matt Kalil is the worst pick, I just said it is not a good pick because we lost first 6 games due to our defense. Our offense were doing fine until half time. After halftime our defense played like a high school team. If we upgraded our defenseback we wouldn’t even complain about our offense line to begin with is what im saying. With our good defense we would of won the first 6 games after halftime without letting them getting an easy touchdown on us.

  274. By tdurfeightyeight on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

Jenkins,Boykins,Robinson and Fleming will be taken before tru.

  275. By GrandDaddyPurp on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

We got ANOTHER 7th round pick are you guys still against us taking Vontaze Burfict with a whopping 7th rounder? When we have Mike Singletary as our LB coach? Is using a 7th rounder on a guy originally projected as a 1st rounder TOO MUCH of a risk for you all?

  276. By hognuts on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

Now let’s get a new stadium!!!

  277. By Parody on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

I think Speilman earned a B+ for today’s work. He got a bit less than he should have in the trades, but got 2 solid players out of it. It looked like a reach to get Smith, but probably a good choice considering there was nobody left (outside of Johnson who’s a Q) that could start a Safety this year.

  278. By Nicholas on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

We have filled two significant holes with two people that have very high upside thus far.

    I’m happy : )

  279. By Spencer on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

We didnt lose the first 6 games because of the defense, Larson. It was because in the 2nd half the offense went dam near 3 and out every single drive. The D was gassed and understandably so

  280. By Mark B on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

GrandDaddyPurp – I would consider Burfect as early as the 6th. Not because of Singletary (while a great LB, he leaves a lot to be desired as a coach – look at our LB play last year as proof) but because of Fred Pagac. He is widely known as one of the best LB coaches in the NFL, and if anyone can motivate Burfect I think it could be Fred. Burfect has the potential, he just needs the drive and motivation.

  281. By Mike B. on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

Vikings got to starting players from the get go, so it’s a good draft. I think that round 3 or trading up to 2 looking for best availible WR.

  282. By sandiamond on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

trade might have cost us Hill too

  283. By GrandDaddyPurp on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

Im assuming everyone is still against using a SEVENTH ROUNDER on Burfict?

  284. By Parody on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

GDP – I don’t think so. We passed on Herzlich last year, and the Giants signed him as a UDFA. I think he started a game or two and did really well. He just dropped (was originally a top-ten projection) because he battled his way past cancer. He could turn into a pro-bowler in a year or two now.

  285. By LarsonFamily on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

Spencer- Wrong. We were in a big lead between 9 to 16 points and we lost the lead easily by giving out 10 points or more. If we upgraded the defense it gives the offense linemen time to rest while they are battling yard for yard. Instead they got an easy touchdown and the offense just got back on the sideline without taking a break. I dont blame them for being exhausted that makes us think oh yeah the offense sucks. No. If our defense battle yard for yard we would of had a great finish. Ponder would of gotten alot of rest instead of still wheezing and trying to find holes to get to.

Parody – looking at the draft pick value chart I will agree that we could have gotten slightly more for 3rd overall (3 is worth 2,200 while 4 is 1,800, 118 is 58, 139 is 36.5 and 211 is 7 for a net loss of 270) the trade for 29 was about spot on (29 is worth 640 while 35 is worth 550 and 98 is worth 108 for a net gain of 82).
The nice thing about the trade from 3 to 4 is we still get the OT everyone was coveting AND grabbed up 3 more picks.

Minnifield is as much of a ball hawk and just as hard a hitter. In fact he is probably a better ball hawk. He had the same amount of career INTs, but played in a much better conference.

Check your numbers Mike B – 2nd trade is a net loss of 18. (550+108 = 658 – 640 = 18). It’s a small loss though, but both trades were still a trade-value loss, which is why I knocked Speilman’s grade down a bit. Still a good first round though.

  314. By GrandDaddyPurp on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

Lance- I agree with KoN. I would love to have Johnson, but giving up more picks to move into second to get him is not the right moves in my eyes. Unless Spielman has done his due diligence on him and is 100% confident he would be worth it, I am not for it.

  323. By GrandDaddyPurp on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

Minnifield is a better Zone corner than Tru. In order to be a zone corner you have to be a willing tackler. Those two are the only things Minnifield has over Johnson. Other than that Johnson beats Minnifield in every other category.

Rick Spielman said the lack of depth at safety played a part in trading up for Harrison Smith, but he was highest player left on board.

  325. By Parody on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

Lance – that trade would be good enough for another trade with San Fran or Baltimore at the end of the 2nd round. Then again, we might get a chance to come out ahead in a trade for once!

  326. By KoN on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

Parody, don’t pay too much attention to the point values on picks. Those are just standardized; I doubt that GM pay too close attention to that. It is all about the value of the player(s) that you trade up or down to get, and I think Spielman got the two best players that he could with either of those picks. If we had skipped on Kalil there wouldn’t have been another LT with nearly the same value; if we had waited until 35 the Broncos would have taken Smith and there weren’t any other safties with nearly the same value.

  327. By GrandDaddyPurp on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

Minnifield seemed quicker in catch up speed and was playing against Ponder FSU and Miami. Tru had size and maybe that made him look slower than he is but he didn’t seem to adjust as fast to WR’s out of their brakes. Also Tru was playing N. Iowa, and some other scrub team. Parody – thanks for correcting my Math, been a long day. While both were a trade value loss, still a very good first round and a welcome upgrade at a couple of positions that we really needed. Now, just grab up a WR to upgrade Jenkins (still like Alshon Jeffery as long as we get the 2010 version instead of the 2011 version), some depth at ILB and CB, and a good 3rd down change of pace back and I think we’ll be OK. I also wouldn’t fell bad at all with taking the PK from Purdue late on Saturday – big leg and fairly accurate – to replace an aging Longwell.

  340. By Mark B on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

VikeNasty – current depth chart has Fusco at center behind Sully while Berger was the backup (and replacement for) Herrera.

  343. By Parody on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

There’s going to be a lot of competition at Right and Left Guard. Schwartz, Johsnon, Love, Fusco, DeGeare and Berger will all be looking to earn a starting spot. Who wins is anyone’s guess. I’d prefer DeGeare and Schwartz right now, cutting Johnson.

  344. By Parody on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

KoN – I don’t think we’ll be going WR in the 3rd. Simpson – Harvin – Jenkins looks good enough, with an improved OLine, that it would be better to keep improving the defense with a CB or LB. Mychal Kendricks could be a steal in the 3rd, and Jenkins just might slide due to his off-field problems.

  345. By Shawn on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

Mark B … listen to the pressers. RG will be a competition between Schwarz and Fusco and DeGeare

As of right now Spielman says

    LT … Kalil
    LG … Johnson
    C … Sully
RG … Schwarz/Fusco/DeGeare ( they both Spielman and Frazier seem to really like Fusco )
    RT .. Loadholt

If there are LBs or DTs that are head-and-shoulders above anyone else at 66 then sure the Vikes’ll take them. However, I still believe that they are going into this round thinking that their #1 priority right now is WR. Basically, if they have a WR, and LB and a DT all graded similarly at 66, I think they will end up taking the WR.

Find it kind of interesting how Berger wasn’t mentioned at all in the pressers. I thought he played well when given the opportunity to get on the field. I do like the aggressiveness that Fusco brings, could be a nasty offensive line with the lineup of Kalil, Johnson, Sully, Fusco/Schwartz, Loadholdt. Could be a good year in Vikingland.

Shawn, good point with the age – he is listed at 29 on the site but has been around for 7 years. Worst case scenario – he provides some veteran leadership in the meeting room from a backup C/G position.

I really like the Harrison Smith pick – seems like forever since we’ve had a good safety (jury is still out on Raymond imo). Smith has good cover skills, decent hands, good closing speed, can play in the box, cuts through traffic well and is a solid tackler.

  363. By Mark B on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

And from what tape I’ve seen – both from watching college ball and on the internet – the only real weakness in Kalil’s game is he has a tendency to play a little high. Get him a little lower at the knees and he can be a dominant all around LT for a long time.

  364. By Mark B on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

Taking practice reps across from arguably one of the best DE’s in the NFL can only help Kalil. Get him used to both the speed rush and also the bull rush.

LB- Lavonte David / Sean Spence
    DT -Devon Still
Also use one of the 7th rounders on QB Russell Wilson, MAD SKILLS AND EXTREMELY INTELLIGENT
If we could get 3 or 4 of these guy’s at 3 or 4 position’s, WOW !!!! WHAT A DRAFT IT WOULD BE…..
P.S. @ “Larsonfamily”, I can’t figure out if you are the stupidest, most ignorant and annoying thing to ever walk the face of the earth,OR if you are “somewhat” normal and just playing at being such. Either way we ALL wish you would just GO AWAY, but being VIKINGS fan’s we are used to disappointment…..

  367. By Parody on Apr 26, 2012 | Reply

Looking over who we already have, players who are sure to be starters this year, and depth at each position, I think that the team would be complete with the following, in no particular order:
    1 WR
    1 S
    1 RB
    1 QB
    1 OL
    2 LB
    1 K
    1 DT
    1 CB

That uses up the 10 picks we have left. It would allow us to cut cap weight of Longwell and Frampton for younger players with a brighter future. It should create competition at the two non-franchised LB positions, and give a better idea for what we need to do in 2013. It should push for the best CB combo we can muster this season. It would bring young potential for the questionable DT position. It would give that extra edge of depth at QB and RB, and could land a future #1 WR for when Simpson moves on.

I’d definitely consider trading away two more picks to move up though, and not draft a QB or RB, as we’re pretty solid at both positions as it is.

Great pick with Kalil, and Harrison making a big splash in the 1st round. However I think we should have tried to move up and snagged Janoris Jenkins, although he has off-field problems I think he is the most talented corner athletically in the draft, the guy shut down julio jones in college made him look like a disgrace. And then we pass up the opportunity to move up and snag Stephen HIll a physical specimen, the guy is the next Calvin Johnson out of Georgia Tech standing at 6′ 5″. However there are a few wide-outs left on the board we could grab, we need someone taller than 6′ 2″ we already have slot receivers, and a single wide-out (jenkins). We need that stand out speedy wide-out who can go up and grab em’ in the endzone. WIth that said I think we have the ability to take Mcnutt out of Iowa. Let me know what you all think.
