The Vikings added depth to their linebacker corps and talent to their special teams group on Tuesday by signing free agent LB Marvin Mitchell. Selected in the 7th round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints, Mitchell has also spent time with the Miami Dolphins during his 5-year career.

With the Vikings, Mitchell will likely provide depth at multiple LB spots and he will certainly be in the mix as a core special teams contributor. According to his profile, Mitchell has 119 career tackles and 2.0 sacks in 5 seasons, with 71 games played and 2 starts.

Mitchell began his career on the Saints practice squad and was promoted to the active roster in October of his rookie season. The Saints did not bring him back after the 2010 season following their Super Bowl victory, and Mitchell signed on with the Dolphins in August of 2011. With the Dolphins last season, Mitchell recorded 30 tackles, 1.o sack, 1 INT and 1 forced fumble while also leading the club in special teams tackles with 12.

The Norfolk, Virginia native is 27 years old and measure in at 6-3, 249 pounds.

A New Carr; Vikings Sign Veteran CB

Posted by Mike Wobschall on April 10, 2012 – 9:33 am

For the second time in as many weeks, the Vikings have added a CB in free agency. Last week, the Vikings signed former Chicago Bears CB Zack Bowman, and this week they’ve signed former Ravens CB Chris Carr.

Carr will be entering his 8th season in 2012 and will turn 29 later this month. He was an undrafted free agent out of Boise State in 2005 and played for the Oakland Raiders through the 2007 season. Carr has also spent time with the Tennessee Titans (2008) and the Baltimore Ravens (2009-11). He played in just 9 games last year because of a back injury, but before that he was an important part of the Ravens defense and he’s been one of the NFL’s top special teams performers during his career as well.

The Vikings secondary is a group that needed upgrades this offseason, and the additions of Bowman and Carr will help toward that end. With Chris Cook and Antoine Winfield set to return in 2012, Bowman and Carr will lead the competition for another starting CB job in the Vikings secondary.
