A Look At Vikings Preseason Opponents

Posted by Mike Wobschall on April 4, 2012 – 1:00 pm

The Vikings will face three AFC teams and one NFC foe this August as part of their preseason schedule, the NFL announced today. Specific dates and times have not been released yet, but that information will be forthcoming soon.

Preseason Schedule
Wk 1: at San Francisco
Wk 2: vs. Buffalo
Wk 3: vs. San Diego
Wk 4: at Houston

Two road games sandwich two home games for the Vikings this preseason, as the Purple will travel to San Francisco for a clash with the 49ers in Week 1 of the preseason. The Vikings then return home for games against the Buffalo Bills in Week 2 and the San Diego Chargers in Week 3.

The Vikings preseason schedule concludes when the team flies to Houston for a contest with the Texans. The Vikings will also play both the 49ers and Texans in the regular season.

Two Lions player in trouble on seperate occasions for pot. Leshore was ticketed and Fairly was arrested recently and paid a bail of $1000. StarTribune.com has full story. The Commish may suspend them for a game or two.

I say, whatever the outcome of the pre-season, it will be exactly how Spielman wanted it to be.

The 49ers and Texans will be the more difficult games. 9ers had the best Defence last year. While the Texans have one of the best Wr in the league. Lets see how Cook matches up against him.

Does the preseason record really matter that much? We can go 4-0, but I still don’t see us getting to the playoffs.

  11. By Rogerthevikefan on Apr 4, 2012 | Reply

@Kon the Defence is the reason the 9ers won most of there games. The only time Smith won them a game was against the DIRTBAGS(Saints) and that was mostly inpart because V. Davis is one of the best TE in the league.

  12. By Rogerthevikefan on Apr 4, 2012 | Reply

Lions went 4-0 in the preseason the year they went 0-16 in the regular season. Does preseason really matter? Yes because it lets you evaluate your teams talent in live action.

  13. By Rogerthevikefan on Apr 4, 2012 | Reply

This is Leshores second time getting caught with pot so his chance of being suspened is greater then Fairly.

Rob Gronkowski makes good on promise to smash Jared Allen

Posted by: Dan Wiederer under Vikings, NFC, Brett Favre, Jared Allen Updated: April 4, 2012 – 10:37 AM

Good news for Vikings star Jared Allen: he no longer has to worry about being swallowed up by the Madden curse.

This year, EA Sports is using a bracket format and fan voting to determine which player will be put on the cover of its “Madden ’13” NFL video game. In the first round of the tournament, Allen cruised past Dallas’ DeMarcus Ware, winning 58 percent of the vote in that head-to-head matchup.

But in the Sweet 16, Allen was handily beaten by New England tight end Rob Gronkowski — 65 percent to 35 percent. Gronkowski guaranteed such a destruction, channeling his inner-Gallagher and smashing a watermelon which he said represented Allen.

I never see the point in having a preseason game…Just play an 18 game season…And expand the 53 man roster to 60 the first 2 weeks of the season…Then after the second game is finished for each team (being a Sunday or Monday)…They could have 24 hrs to trim their final rosters from 60 to 55…I gave the 2 extra slots…Seeing as it still remains a long season…

Why should games be played that do not involve the wins or losses in the standings…One injury can destroy that teams season…Why play 4 games that do not matter…And take a chance of injury ??

  18. By KoN on Apr 4, 2012 | Reply

I understand that their D helped them win most of their games, Roger, but they were not the best in the NFL. They were up there, probably top 5-7 but no the best.

  28. By KoN on Apr 4, 2012 | Reply

If the guy won the starting job for the Ravens, I’m sold on him. He’s got to be an improvement over Allen and will most likely compete with Bowman (and probably win) the starting job.

Might need to wait til 2013 for that 1st round shut down corner.
I think we will still draft a safety and corner in the mid rounds… and maybe they can beat out our current players for a starting job.

  34. By Rogerthevikefan on Apr 4, 2012 | Reply

If he was so good why did the Ravens let him walk. Just because he was a Raven doesn’t make him a good player. Burton, Sherels, and the PG are improvements over Ash and alot cheaper than Carr with alot more upside.

R Randle,S Hill, or Alshon Jeffery….One of these 3 WR’s should be on the board when the #35 pick comes around…

I wouldn’t even doubt Spielman drops down 5 to 8 spots in round 2…

If he does that…DT,WR,CB,s, and LB all fall into play if that happens…

If Spielman drops down at any point in the draft…I see him going best player available after that…Vikings have too many needs…

Nova – That’s accurate, but I read somewhere that the group in charge of the Metrodome had no plans of forcing that rule on them. As it stands now, the point is moot. The deadline has passed for the team to get approval from the owners to move to a new venue, so they’re stuck in MN for one more year anyways, and the Metrodome is the only facility that makes sense.

So is anyone else offended by all the sportscasters calling it the Mall of America Field? I know, they purchased the naming rights to it and all, but it just sounds so pathetic, especially since it had one name for my entire life until the change. It’s still supposed to be followed by “at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome,” but nobody has enough lung capacity to say the ENTIRE name in one breath, so they just shorten it to the legally required minnimum under the naming policy. It’s as if the Metrodome hasn’t existed for 5-years!

Mall of America Field just sounds like a park next to Camp Snoopy…err excuse me, Nickelodeon Universe (another name change that I despise). It says anything but football. Let’s get a new stadium approved and built with a GOOD sponsor already so that we aren’t forced to hear that gastly name anymore!!!

  59. By Parody on Apr 4, 2012 | Reply

Hognuts – Indifferent. He’s probably an upgrade over Asher Allen, which would make him the top choice for the #4 spot on the CB depth chart now. I think the move was made so that we can draft a project CB in one of the later rounds and give him a year to learn the system and improve before he starts fighting for a spot on the roster.

  60. By iaVIKE on Apr 4, 2012 | Reply

hognuts- Good move. I don’t know what we’re payin him, but it’s just one year. Brings in competition, and at the very least it’s better than what we had last year. If he doesn’t work out he’s gone at the end of the year

VegasVike…McNabb is figured in because of his personal “career stats”…I was trying to explain this to Spencer a week or so ago..In order for Cook to be listed in the “top 100 CB’s in 2011″…Cook would have to of had at least statistics from one complete season…Or 16 games…Even if there was time split between 2 seasons to have the 16 game minimum required…

I think Cook has only played like 6 games in his 2 yrs being in the NFL..So he does not qualify for that category…It would be like a baseball player batting .800 and only playing 8 games during that season…That player can not win a batting title…A batter needs so many plate appearances to be eligible…

In any sport to register recognition…That person needs a “body of work” to rank in that sport…

Even take a look at the Vikings cheerleaders for instance…Have you seen a picture of Rachel ??…

Now that’s a body any guy should be able to work with… ; )

Just an FYI – the 49ers had the best rush defense in the nfl by far last season and finished ranked 4th overall. IMO preseason win/loss records mean nothing but the games should serve the purpose of evaluating new talent along with getting into a rhythm so I believe they are needed. Maybe cut back to 3 games. Injuries can happen at any time but even veterans need a few snaps under their belt before the games start counting. “with the 3rd pick of the 2012 nfl draft the minnesota vikings select M. Kalil, ot usc.”

Here is the problem with Blackmon:
Blackmon is not as quick off the ball as his athleticism would suggest. He has good top-end speed and acceleration in the open field, but struggles to get enough burst to separate in short areas. An elongated stride makes it difficult for him to run sharp routes. Much of his production came from making plays at the point of the catch and after; he doesn’t get himself open through route-running. He is an all-or-nothing blocker who can’t recover after whiffing, and will have to improve in that area. His stride hampers his ability to change direction and could be his biggest problem in the NFL, where he’ll be covered by premier athletes. BUST!!!

I looked up some MN businesses a while back because I was wondering what companies might want naming rights to a stadium. I thought Arctic Cat or Polaris would be great names to attach to our field, especially if we were to make it an open top stadium. Only problem there is that I don’t think those companies are big enough to justify that kind of spending.

Best Buy was another one that looked okay. They could throw a top of state-of-the-art technology inside there then. But with the recent news of Best Buy downsizing, they’re probably not trying to spend too much money right now.

Even though im probably the biggest supporter of Cook, I still have doubts. Hes weak as he||, provides no run-support, cant tackle, and is constantly injured. For a guy his size you would think he would be at least be able to tackle, but thats far from the truth. At times he looks downright scared trying to wrap up. Its pathetic.

We got the wrong ravens DB, we should’ve (and still can) picked up Lardarius Webb. Also, any thoughts on picking up Braylon Edwards or Plaxico Burress for the upcoming year or two to compliment Harvin and whichever WR we get in the draft?

  126. By Countdown to Draft on Apr 4, 2012 | Reply

The second year after Vick was out of jail he caught fire and had a huge season. We should at the least take a look at Plaxico. He has always been one of the biggest redzone threats at the receiver position.

Mike, Webb is a great player and he’s young, but he’s a restricted free agent, meaning we would have to give up a first round draft pick for him; that would be a bad move. As for the vet WRs, the vikes aren’t really looking to pick up old guys so I would cross Burress off the list.As for Edwards, I think it would depend upon how much he was asking for

I think both plaxico and edwards are worth a shot at a cheap short term contract. Any thoughts on signing Marcus Mcneill as a solid LT? I know Kalil seems the way to go as far as the number 3 pick, but signing Mcneil (who is 6’7″, 336 pounds, and has played 6 seasons) would give us a lot of flexibility with our draft.

  141. By Parody on Apr 4, 2012 | Reply

Mike – I’d still want us to sign Kalil. Then we can line them up at left and right tackle, get rid of Loadholt for a 7th round pick, and give Ponder and company an offensive line that’s 7 times better than it was last year.

This looks like one of the most complete mocks I’ve seen of the team yet. It looks like it focuses a little too much on DBs, but gives great reasoning for every pick. After reading it, I would be thrilled with this group of guys added to the team. I just hope they can live up to the hype he created for them.

I’m convinced that, whoever is on the field for the Vikes during the regular season will have had to earn that starting position. I think giving someone a chance to contribute and be a part of something is better than forking out free agency fortunes to guys and handing them a starting position. Thus far, I like what Spielman’s done in FA, even though it may not make a whole lot of sense to most.

  221. By NorthwoodsVikesFan on Apr 6, 2012 | Reply

Parody, IMO, it depends. I keep thinking of the Toby Keith song “I ain’t as good as I once was, but I’m as good once as I ever was.”

I’ll take a proven, uninjured veteran over an unproven, injured young player if I get the chance (if money was not a concern, of course).

Either way, it could bite you in the rear – McNabb was proven, but did nothing for us. And as great as Randy Moss was, after he injured his back he never was the same – same with Culpepper’s knee.

Funny to see how many are throwing in the towel and crying over our lates CB pickup. Just because we got someone doesn’t mean that we still won’t address that need in the draft. How about everbody just hold off making judgements until the draft??? Wow, what a concept. We can speculate all we want, but quit crying over what hasn’t happened yet. I for one am feeling a heck of a lot better than I did 3 weeks ago about the holes we need to fill.
