An Inside Look At Nike’s NFL Uniform/Apparel Launch

Nike has a reputation for high performance worthy of championship-caliber athlete endorsement, popular style and a dominating presence on the market. It should come as no surprise, then, that their NFL uniform and apparel unveiling presentation on Tuesday in New York was nothing short of sensational.

Upon arrival at Steiner Studios, those of us in attendance were funneled into the building and were greeted by a display of each NFL team’s branded Nike Vapor Jet Men’s 2.0 Gloves.

After viewing the display, I walked into a large display room that had a bank of manikins dedicated to each team. The manikins were adorned in each team’s apparel, which will be available to both players and fans.

After about 20 minutes of snapping photos and sending tweets, Nike ushered all of us into an actual studio, which was appropriately decorated. We sat in bleachers, just as you would at a high school or college football game, and the stage floor was synthetic football turf, complete with yard-line markers. Behind the stage was an enormous, high definition television screen that Nike would use to enhance the program.

A bevy of speakers addressed us, including President of Nike Brand Charlie Denson, Nike Creative Director Todd Van Horne, Nike executive Mark Parker and other members of Nike’s creative design team. Denson proclaimed that Nike would “continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible,” and then welcomed NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to the stage. Goodell said Nike and the NFL share “a belief in better.”

Van Horne described several tactics that Nike used to perfect their product, including “sweat mapping” to ensure the material kept the players cool during performance.

NFL players Victor Cruz (NY Giants WR) and Kam Chancellor (Seattle Seahawks safety) also spoke, endorsing the new uniforms and performance gear. Cruz said that the top attribute he covets in a uniform is comfort, and that the new Nike uniforms provide that.

Finally, players from each team were brought out to model the new uniforms. The Vikings player representative was WR Percy Harvin, who wore the jersey well. Because of our vantage point, it was hard to get a close picture of Harvin in the new uniform, but the good news is I have a meeting with Harvin at some point before 1:00 p.m. ET, and at that point I will snap more photos and pass them along when possible.

That’s the quick update for now. A great show put on by Nike and the NFL, which should not surprise us. The basic takeaway here is that NFL players will enjoy premium and improved performance from the new gear, and NFL fans will enjoy cutting-edge style that does not infringe upon the traditional and iconic look of the NFL and its 32 franchises.

More later, so stay tuned to vikings.com, the vikings.com Blog, the Vikings official Facebook page and Twitter (@wobby).

Honestly I think Vikings have one of the best uniforms. Maybe I’m a litttttle biased but the purple and gold with the classic horns on the helmet are sweet! I love when the Vikings wear everything purple.

But I was really hoping there would be some changes to our away game uniforms. The all white uniforms have no character.

Wish they would just go back to the two rings on the arm sleeve. Never really liked the thunderbolt or whatever it is down the side.
Guess it doesn’t matter. I wouldn’t be caught buying this teams players jerseys.

“CB Morris Claiborne, scored a 4 on the Wonderlic test (answering 4 of 50 questions in the 12 minute exam).

Sounds like he answered 4 and got 4 right. Maybe he didn’t know or forgot it was a 12 minute test. You have less than 15 seconds to answer the question.

I’m curious what kind of questions are they that they expect you to answer in 12 seconds.

Janoris Jenkins is the best corner in this draft. If not for being a dumb@S$ he would go top 10. He shut down AJ Green, J. Jones, and A. Jeffery. They are all 6’3-6’4 so even with his size he matches up very well against no. 1 Wrs.

I don’t like the idea, someone else is deciding what design the Vikes have, they reveal it and thats it, were stuck with it, the Vikes have no choice, boo from me. Lets bring back Odin the 30ft statue that they used to have in the end zone…

The new uniforms and the ones the vikings have been wearing since 2006 are horrible looking. A very bad design since 2006!! Go back to the 1996 thru 2005 uniforms(helmets, jerseys, pants, for home and away!!!) or the 60’s and 70’s style!! 2006 to current are ridiculous and the ugliest i’ve ever seen!! C’MON VIKINGS, BRING BACK THE OLD SCHOOL VIKINGS LOOK!!!!

  15. By OTKalil2012 on Apr 3, 2012 | Reply

sandiamond…I don’t think Jenkins will be on the Vikings board…They already have enough trouble on the team in the secondary with Cook…

For one reason or another…It seems too many of the top secondary players in the first 2 rounds have some kind of red flags they are dealing with…

Vikings are picking high in the draft order this with a lot of draft choices…I don’t see them taking chances on any players with character issues this time around…McKinney and Cook have drawn to much negative press of late last season…Spielman will look to clean up some of those problems if he can…So I don’t see him looking for any potential problem players in this draft…

  16. By Derrick.G™ on Apr 3, 2012 | Reply

Sorry, but i dont agree. The old 60’s-70’s unis make all the players look like their 60yrs old, just too bland for todays nfl, the 2000’s looked good, but i love the newer 06+ ones. The 70’s are over people, get over it already.

@charliewest40 I like your first 4 picks just don’t know enough about the rest. Johnson would be a very good FS and paired with SS Smith the safeties spots would be filled for years. Brian Quick will be one of the best Wrs out of this draft class.

You cant just draft a guy because of his physical attributes. DT Mike Martin might be a little undersized at his position but the guy is a monster. You can question his size but you cant question his ability on the field.

  23. By sandiamond on Apr 3, 2012 | Reply

OTK yes I agree about Jenkins. Wobs has stated that Spielman has a strict grade policy when it comes to evaluating these college players. Personally I would be more worried about all the children(child support/courts) than the past weed issues.

This certainly affects the grade policy for ILB Burfict but I will never give up hope until he is drafted by another team. Watched more film on him for special teams and was very impressed

I was really hoping to see an upgrade to a few team’s jerseys, but it looks like the only real change Nike made was changing to their swoosh logo, and changing how the fabric is laid out on the jerseys. It doesn’t look like drastic changes were made to any team, and a few of them needed it.

Not the Vikings though. The current style is better than what a lot of other teams have, and is better than what they had before it. Sorry old-schoolers, but it was just way too bland.

  26. By Parody on Apr 3, 2012 | Reply

Anyone who’s still interested in taking the Wonderlic test, here’s a link to a 15-question simulation:
    http://www.nicholascreative.com/footballiq/index.php

Remember to skip over the questions that appear even a little tough. You only have 3 minutes 36 seconds to answer all 15 of them. It’s better to get 7 questions wrong for not trying than to get 8 questions wrong because you didn’t make it to them by the time the clock hit zero!

I don’t know why theVikings don’t go after LT again for their third down back. I thought he did a great job last year and actually out performed expectations. If AP is not ready to go in the beginning of the year as expected I would think LT would fill in nicely. Plus at this point in his career I would think he would come priced right, always a big PLUS for the Vikes! Anyone?

  34. By Parody on Apr 3, 2012 | Reply

No thanks Vegas. It seems to me that vets are always pricing themselves aboe what they’re worth. A few exceptions to the rule come in when players make a big mistake or drop off in play the previous year. But they still need to come back and prove that it was just a fluke in order to justify whatever contract they do sign with their new teams.

  35. By VegasVike on Apr 3, 2012 | Reply

    @ Parody – from WIKI
He finished the season leading the Jets in rushing with 914 yards, though it was widely thought he would be a complement to Shonn Greene, whom he outrushed by 148 yards.[43] It was also Tomlinson’s first year in his entire career that he did not record double-digit TDs, as he recorded a career low of 6.

Personally I thought Greene was gonna be the man, even put him on my fantasy team! I agree wholeheartedly with your statements. I just think we may be in a RB bind for part of the year and we have so many permanent needs to fill with youngsters from the draft.

  36. By Parody on Apr 3, 2012 | Reply

Even if we are in a RB bind, grabbing an overpriced vet is not the answer. He’ll demand starter money, and may perform like a starter for a few weeks. But then AP and Gerhart heal up, and they take playing time away from him. Then he’s just blocking off a roster spot and probably something close to $7million in cap space.

No thanks! There has to be a more realistic option. If not, then Ponder just gets more experience as a gunslinger.

  37. By sandiamond on Apr 3, 2012 | Reply

anyone know who the WR is that we have overlooked in the class level of McNutt, Sanu,Toon and Quick?

  38. By VegasVike on Apr 3, 2012 | Reply

Well I do like gunslingers! (Favre) I agree we shouldn’t pay the moon for him but if we got him priced right he would be a good option.

  39. By Parody on Apr 3, 2012 | Reply

sandiamond – My reference has a lot of players graded between Sanu & McNutt (the top and bottom players from your list). They fall between late second rounders to early 6th rounders.

But based on names that have been mentioned frequently on this site, I’d say you’re looking for either Juron Criner or Tommy Streeter.

  42. By Matthias on Apr 3, 2012 | Reply

Can you say low-class in this context?
    I guess I said something I didn’t mean.

  43. By Parody on Apr 3, 2012 | Reply

Vegas – I’d say the most acceptable signing we could get for him would be an incentive contract with something in the range of a $2 million signing bonus, with the rest paid out on a production basis: $50K for every 100 yards he gains, rushing or receiving, from the line of scrimmage.

So, for example, if he’s a thousand yard back, then he gets that $7 million contract I suggested. If he’s able to force it up to 1500 yards, he gets $9.5 million, but if he breaks his femur in preseason, then we’re only out the $2million bonus. Seems reasonable.

  44. By Craig on Apr 3, 2012 | Reply

I was telling my wife the other day how the Bucs changed the color and design of their uniforms then won the SB. I think the Vikes should have uniforms that resemble a Viking. Brown uniforms with cross stitiching down the sides in black or gold. Helmets silver with white horns surrounded by a black boarder. Change the uniforms to brown, gold, black and silver. With the Nike graphics for the helmet, they could make it look like real Viking helmets with horns.

  45. By sandiamond on Apr 3, 2012 | Reply

I work on a performance/commission basis and wouldn’t have it any other way. That would be an excellent contract Parody. Of course, I’m not in much danger of breaking my femur lol….

Well, Streeter was the tallest guy on that list at 6’5″, so my next guess has to be Jeff Fuller who sneaks in at 6’4″, but he’s a bit slower than I’d like with 40-times ranging from 4.53 to 4.65.

  49. By OTKalil2012 on Apr 3, 2012 | Reply

sandiamond…I didn’t see Givens or Wylie on your list…I think both of those 2 WR’s will be good…Wylie looks like the next Wes Welker type receiver and should be a great slot receiver…

You asked earlier if Claiborne having the bad score on the wonderlic would turn teams off ??…It shouldn’t….CB’s job is mostly reaction time and instinctive anyway…

If Claiborne drops past pick 6 in the draft…Some teams have done to much over thinking… Instead of just picking up a blue chip player in Claiborne…

  50. By OTKalil2012 on Apr 3, 2012 | Reply

I sure hope Streeter is off of Spielmans draft board…Seems fans keep bringing up the fact he is 6′ 5″…And runs a 4.34…

But Steeter has a harder time catching the football over his shoulder down the field than Troy Williamson…Watch Streeters combine tape…The kid is a running disaster area trying to run under a football to catch it…

  51. By iaVIKE on Apr 3, 2012 | Reply

I heard Streeter has the physical traits but his football IQ and instinct are low

  52. By OTKalil2012 on Apr 3, 2012 | Reply

iaVike….Streeter can’t track the football coming in over his shoulder…He falls away from the ball as it is coming into his hands…And that happened when there wasn’t even a defender on the field of play at the combine…

I drop a leave a response when I especially enjoy a article on a site or I have something to add to the discussion.

Usually it’s a result of the passion communicated in the post
I read. And on this post Vikings Blog | An Inside Look At Nikes NFL Uniform/Apparel Launch.
I was actually excited enough to drop a comment ;-) I do
have a couple of questions for you if you don’t mind. Is it only me
or does it appear like some of the responses come across like they are left by brain dead folks? :-P And, if you are posting at other online sites, I’d like to follow
anything fresh you have to post. Could you make a list all of your communal pages like
your Facebook page, twitter feed, or linkedin profile?

I almost never comment, but I looked at a great deal of comments on this page Vikings Blog | An Inside Look At Nikes NFL Uniform/Apparel Launch.
I actually do have 2 questions for you if it’s allright.

Could it be only me or do some of these remarks look like they
are coming from brain dead individuals? :-P And, if you are posting on additional sites, I’d like to follow everything new you have to post.
Would you list of every one of your social sites like your twitter feed, Facebook page or
    linkedin profile?

I was wondering if you ever considered changing the layout of your blog?
Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people
could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of
text for only having 1 or two pictures. Maybe you could space it out better?

Good day! I know this is kind of off topic but
I was wondering if you knew where I could get a captcha plugin for my comment
form? I’m using the same blog platform as yours and I’m having trouble finding one?

    Thanks a lot!
