Vikings Release Three Conceptual Images Of Proposed New Stadium

Posted by Ryan Cardinal on April 2, 2012 – 1:51 pm

The Minnesota Vikings released three conceptual images illustrating the proposed new stadium on the current Metrodome site in Downtown East.

Two of the images, including a night scene incorporating the downtown skyline, depict events surrounding Vikings game days. The third illustrates non-game day activity and a closer look at the proposed Winter Garden light rail train station.

Also included are two previous images that were released last month.

Wow wouldn’t that be great. Let’s get it done.

Beautiful stadium. Hopefully we can get an agreement done soon.

I cant wait to hear Ponder to Brian Walters for Six.

Looks fantastic! After Snowmageddon I’d be a little concerned about a flat roof, but it looks like a wonderful complex. If all Vikes fans threw in a few dollars, we could build it in no time! :)

Vikings sign WR Bryan Walters from San Diego, never heard of him.

  6. By PAVike on Apr 2, 2012 | Reply

I am guessing Bryan Walters will fill in Greg Camarillo’s role on the team, or just be another practice-squad body.

On another note, why isn’t Spielmen going after Safties? I mean absolutely zero disrespect, but Jamarca Sanford is an absolutely horrific safety.

As long as they have a giant statue of Odin in the end zone I will llike it. Lets take our draft choices and get all defense players, the team aint going anywhere with out a rock solid, discplined defense.

It looks awesome, however where’s the tailgat lot? Is that it 4 blocks away?

  10. By Shawn on Apr 2, 2012 | Reply

RichardA1 … I agree. As a Minnesota Norwegian aka Viking. The stadium should have relics or statues or some sort of symbolic imagery of Viking legend in a broader than football architecture sense. If that makes any sense. Titus ? Hows that sentence?

  11. By Parody on Apr 2, 2012 | Reply

Shawn – They could put runestones at each entrance. I think that would add a nice bit of nostalgia to the new stadium.

  12. By Parody on Apr 2, 2012 | Reply

Personally, I think the stadium concept is just horrid. I hate fighting my way into Minneapolis any time I want to see a game, and then paying ten bucks for parking a mile awy.

But right now, anything will be acceptable, so long as it keeps the team here. We can bîtch about the decision after it gets done.

As long as I don’t have to pay for it, looks great!

  14. By Shawn on Apr 2, 2012 | Reply

Richard A1 … I also agree on defense. I am a huge fan of defense.

85Bears was fun to watch. Lesser QB with a “noodle” arm but a solid run game and a DOMINATE D ….

00Ravens was fun to watch. Lesser QB with a “noodle” arm but a solid run game and a DOMINATE D ….

02Buccs was fun to watch. Lesser QB with a “noodle” arm but a solid run game and a DOMINATE D ….

Those teams would walk into your town and just shut you down … they broke the opponents will … the dominated … defensively

  15. By Shawn on Apr 2, 2012 | Reply

Parody … Rune stones would add a touch of Vikingdom :)

  16. By Shawn on Apr 2, 2012 | Reply

Stacy if we take my tax money out of the warmongering pot and use it for the stadium then Id be OK taking your tax money out of the Viking stadium fund and add it to the warmongering pot

  17. By Parody on Apr 2, 2012 | Reply

Shawn – How about the 2008 Steelers? They had a decent offense, but the best defense the NFL has ever seen. They were first in every category except rushing yards (thank you Vikings).

  18. By viking room on Apr 2, 2012 | Reply

i think this will be the best thing that the vikings need, make it bigger and better, and then this will motivate all, and win a super bowl ring for the city, i am loving it, get it done asap, this stadium looks fantastic.

  19. By viking room on Apr 2, 2012 | Reply

or i should say, for the state, long past due, i say strongly.

  20. By GrandDaddyPurp on Apr 2, 2012 | Reply

The 08 Steelers had a proven QB. The other teams did not

  21. By Shawn on Apr 2, 2012 | Reply

Parody… yea there have been more than 3 teams built like that. I just listed the 3 best.

I also agree that they need to make a different concept for the stadium because those pics above seem to do little justice to a billion dollar stadium. Some of the landscaping looked nice but the stadium needs a better artist … perhaps of Norwegian or Danish heritage :)

I also agree as long as the Vikinging play in Minnesota anything containing more than 2 pee troughs for 60k people would be just fine with me. ANYTHING … Heck just add a 3rd pee trough to the dome and Id be OK :)

  22. By jb on Apr 2, 2012 | Reply

Beyond the evident safety issue of pedestrians standing on the light rail track, I think it looks great! the stadium doesn’t stand a chance if it’s not constructed in downtown Minneapolis.

  23. By Shawn on Apr 2, 2012 | Reply

Those teams above you couldnt do anything … here is a typical game summary

I will use Vikings in place of those teams names

Vikings kick off to opponent …. opponent goes 3 and out punts to Vikings … Vikings go on a 4-9 minute drive and come away with 3-7 points … Vikings kick off … opponent 3 and out

There was nothing you could do they just DOMINATED …. I like my team to be like that a lot more than watching my team in a back and forth week in and week out 33-27 stress fest

  24. By GrandDaddyPurp on Apr 2, 2012 | Reply

    You want a dominant D?

    Rd1 CB Mo Claiborne
    Rd3 DT Devin Still
    Rd3 DB Chase Minnifield
    Rd4 LB Sean Spence
    Rd4 comp DT Mike Martin
    Rd4 comp LB Keenan Robinson
    Rd5 FS George Iloka
    Rd6 LB Emmanuel Acho

BOOM! Its not going to happen unfortunately but still interesting scenario

Once the new stadium deal is done, the Vikes need to hire the guys from the Capitol One commercials!! Have them roam outside the stadium before the game!! Do commercials for the new stadium, once it is done!! What’s in your wallet, Viking fans?? A brand new beautiful stadium, thank you very much!!

  34. By KoN on Apr 2, 2012 | Reply

My best guess is that he thought the amont that the Vikes offered him was too low. So now he’s testing the waters to see if he can get a higher price from another team. From what I’ve heard, he wants to stay in MN. So if he gets a better deal elsewhere, I’m guessing he’ll try to use that as leverage to get a similar deal with the Vikes.

But yes GDP, I do agree that Joe Webb is a play-maker. However, he is our back-up quarterback, so I see no benefit in placing him in harms way. If in the unfortunate event that Ponder were to go down, we would need Webb to come in for relief. So I wouldnt be to high on the idea of placing him at punt returner, and besides Marcus Sherals is already a solid return man.

KoN – Just 1,100 parking spots? That’s not nearly enough. That’ll cover the people who are willing to pay $75 for parking right next to the stadium, but the rest of us will still have to search town for a ramp and walk a mile.

*If you average 4-people per car, a 65,000 fan stadium will require 16,250 parking spots. I think 4 per car is reasonable, considering that a lot of people come in pairs, but others will choose to ride the lightrail into town evening it out.

Dayton: Sports-linked tip boards not viable to fund stadium

Posted by: Baird Helgeson under Minnesota governor, Gov. Mark Dayton, Minnesota legislature, Democrats, Republicans, State budgets Updated: April 2, 2012 – 12:19 PM

Gov. Mark Dayton harshly criticized a new proposal by House Republicans to rely on new gambling money from so-called sports tip boards to help pay for a new Minnesota Vikings stadium.

Dayton said the proposed tip boards – which can link charitable gambling to the outcomes of professional sporting events – are likely illegal under federal law and would not pass muster with bond houses that will be needed to finance construction of a new stadium.

“It doesn’t strike me at first glance as a viable option,” Dayton said Monday.

The DFL governor said, however, he was encouraged that House leaders have become more engaged in stadium negotiations during the chaotic and uncertain final weeks of the legislative session. The House Commerce Committee has its first hearing on the charitable gambling component of the agreement Monday night.

“The coin is flipping in the air and I don’t know whether it is going to come down heads or tails,” Dayton said.

The stadium project has barely budged through much of the legislative session. It has been dogged by financing problems, opposition from charities and a lack of a drive among many legislators to complete the nearly $1 billion taxpayer-funded stadium during an election year.

On Sunday, House Republicans announced a deal that would give charities a larger take from the proposed expansion of electronic pull tabs, bingo and tip boards to pay the state’s nearly $400 million share of a new stadium. If the new gambling revenue doesn’t hit projections, House Republicans propose taxing luxury suites at the stadium, a new scratch-off lottery ticket or tap excess Hennepin County sales tax money to make up the shortfall.

Dayton said he learned of the agreement in the media and that it was “very disappointing” that House Republicans did not consult his administration during negotiations.

The administration had been trying to work out its own agreement with charities to dull opposition. House Speaker Kurt Zellers, R-Maple Grove, has said in particular he was troubled that charities weren’t getting more out of the deal.

Revenue Commissioner Myron Frans made a last offer to the charities a week ago, but Dayton said they never got back to his administration.

“I think they found the best negotiating channel was with the speaker,” Dayton said.

The governor has been the strongest supporter of the stadium proposal at the Capitol and his staff has spent “thousands of hours” brokering an agreement with the team and local government leader. Some Republicans have said they envision a scenario in which Dayton might trade their support for a stadium in exchange for his approval of education and government reform provisions he has spoken against.

“No one has approached me with any of those suggestions or offers,” Dayton said. “I have heard the rumors, but nothing at this point has come to p-a-s-s.”

Percy Harvin will undergo minor shoulder surgery

Posted by: Dan Wiederer under Vikings, Vikings fans, Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin Updated: April 2, 2012 – 8:19 PM

With one simple Tweet, Percy Harvin threw a scare into Vikings fans this evening. The standout receiver needed just 46 characters to deliver a bit ominous news: “Just found out I will need surgery on shoulder.”

Harvin used a second Tweet 10 minutes later to soften the blow: “Recovery should be quick I will be ready for otas”

That’s a reference to the Vikings’ “Offseason Training Activities,” the first of which will begin sometime in late May.

According to a source, Harvin’s surgery will be minor in nature, an arthroscopic “clean up” procedure. It should not come anywhere close to jeopardizing Harvin’s availability for the start of training camp.

At this stage of the game, that is a huge deal for the Vikings, who can ill afford to have another one of their stars on the shelf. With running back Adrian Peterson still recovering from major knee surgery and his timeline for a return to full health still uncertain, Harvin will likely be counted on as the focal point of the Vikings’ offensive attack until further notice.

Last season, Harvin led the Vikings with 87 catches for 967 yards. In total, he had 1,312 yards from scrimmage on 139 offensive touches.

In the six games Peterson either didn’t play (against Atlanta, Denver, Detroit and Chicago) or was unable to finish due to injury (Oakland, Washington), Harvin had 47 catches for 573 yards and six touchdowns, making the most of his heightened opportunity.

Vikings stadium survives first vote in Legislature, but questions persist

By Doug Belden Posted: 04/02/2012 12:01:00 AM CDT

    April 3, 2012 4:20 AM GMT Updated: 04/02/2012 11:20:52 PM CDT

The bill to build a Minnesota Vikings stadium on the site of the Metrodome got its first vote at the Legislature on Monday, April 2, clearing one House committee and heading to another.

The Commerce and Regulatory Reform Committee passed a related bill as well.

    Together, the bills would:

    – Provide additional tax relief for charitable groups involved in the stadium financing plan.

    – Identify backup funding sources for the state’s contribution to the stadium.

    – Add a form of charitable gaming estimated to yield $16 million in tax revenue per year for the state.

The agreement reflected in the bills was struck last weekend in talks between House leadership and charitable gaming interests. It was meant to address several remaining sticking points for lawmakers, and Monday’s vote provides a lift for the team and stadium backers.

One word regarding stadium – retractable roof but no dome – please

  180. By Woodboat on Apr 3, 2012 | Reply

This’ll sound like a dumb question. I’ve never lived where it snows… do you folks up north have such things as multi-story parking garages? I gotta think that you do, and yet in the images I see a few parking lots… no garages. I would think that this should be integral to any downtown stadium. Let the tailgaters have the top floor to party on…

  181. By Parody on Apr 3, 2012 | Reply

Woodboat – Yes, there are plenty of multi-story parking garages here. The Mall of America wouldn’t be possible without it. The dome collapse was due to the fact that it was a fabric trying to support all the weight across a large area. Buildings that don’t need 10000+ square yards of unimpeded space can be built to withstand a lot more weight than any blizzard could drop on it.

That’s why you can park a couple hundred cars at the top of a parking garage, but wouldn’t dare consider parking your car on top of the dome…
