Vikings Sign RB Hilliard; DT Evans

Posted by Mike Wobschall on March 21, 2012 – 12:26 pm

On Wednesday the Vikings made official the signing of two free agents, with RB Lex Hilliard joining the club and DT Fred Evans re-signing.

Hilliard is a 4th-year player who was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the 6th round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He has rushed for 130 yards and 2 TDs in his career. A product of the University of Montana, Hilliard helped the Dolphins rank 4th in the NFL in rushing in 2009 when they ran for 2,231 yards. The Montana native also has 26 receptions for 210 yards and 2 TDs receiving over his 3-year career.

Evans joined the Vikings organization as a free agent in 2007. In his 5 seasons with the Vikings, Evans has played in 64 games and started two, recording 73 totals tackles along with 8 tackles for loss and 1.0 sack.

Hilliard helped the Dolphins rank 4th in rushing in 2009? He had 130 yards and 2 touch downs in 4 years! WOW! The Vikings are going to be unstoppable. Evans had 73 tackles in only 5 years and 1 sack. Sign me up for season tickets!

Are you all kidding me? We’re obviously building through the draft. How could anyone think different?

This is just getting stupid. So many good WR and CB in the Free agents and we get RB and DT? we dont need either one! common managerment get your heads in there and make some decisions that are going to help the team!

How often have are draft picks really panned out, other than our first rounders?

NOW Vikes can put Hilliard, Felton, D’Imperio and Asiata all out there at once with Harvin. Now the plan for the offense is crystal clear.

frazier goes we aint done shoppin in free agentcy but i mean u mindaswell have been, vikes havent done ne rebuilding in needed places u guys are lookin like garbage might have to start cheering for dolphins at least their trying to make their roster better

Hilliard was used as a blocker. In 2009 he helped Ricky Williams gain 1121 and R Brown gain 648. In 2010 he helped Brown get 734 and Williams get 673. In ’11 he helped Reggie Bush get 1086, and D. Thomas get 581.

Hilliard was signed to help pave the road for AP and Gerhart.

The patriots, the steelers, the colts, the giants, the saints (except Brees), and the packers are never in free agency news!!!

however, teams that always are: Jets, Redskins, Eagles, Raiders, Chiefs, Cowboys, Bears, Seahawks always get free agents and none have a superbowl ring in almost 20 years!!!

Free agency is not the way to build our team. Quit complaining we obviously want to build through the draft like the teams that win superbowls.

The patriots pick up cheap FA with little risk.

There is a method to building a championship and free agency is not it. History proves it.

ya and how many of those teams wer rebuilding how many of those teams had no Oline no one in secondary 1 wr and a rookie qb all those teams have had strong rosters already didnt need ne free agents, we wer 3 13 and free agents would help fill voids to help us wen draft day comes but no we rather let go of good player and dont sign ne thats pathetic ur dreamin if ur telling me free agency cant help ur team

we do not hear any info about the stadium issue. Someone needs to grow a backbone, and ask some tough questions. Please do not worry about who the Vikings get.Ziggy can only be patient for so long. The majority do not seem to care. I live near Seattle. People never thought we’d lose the Sonics.

Viking fans it could be alot worst we could have Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland. He alienates people. Hopefully Long gets sick of him and wants a trade. He scared off Manning and Flynn.

  16. By Rogerthevikefan on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

AP will need a lead blocker. Lets see who will win between Felton, Hilliard, or D’Imperio. Plus Caleb King likely will be playing RB for the first month or so.

  17. By AMB on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

Everyone don’t worry, the Vikings GM knows what he is doing. He is re-building this team with we already let go. And yes they are different they are a year older. So we have a “new” team.

holy another RB? truly they must not listen to fans? nor do they read these blogs then! Seriously a RB? a lame rb at that! when does this madness stop? Wobby seriously how does it feel to have to annnounce this junk to the community who is screaming for talent and holes to be filed in areas we need them filed. I am on the serious verge of giving up on this franchise. As painful as that would be I have to remember what have the managment done for us fans? They continue not to listen to us or even try to make us happy. So why should I help them with ticket sales, merchandise or anything else?

Im seriously one more RB away form giving the heck up on this team!

I haven’t seen or heard any comments about last seasons addition of Jordan Todman. He’s a incredibly talented young man, with great speed and quickness. I believe he can be used on 3rd down and in the return game. He has an incredible upside.

  20. By Snake on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

Maybe their letting all the players that think they gonna get big money realize that their not gonna and then they try to sign em cuz it sure doesnt seem like they doin anything to rebuild yet. I realize the packers, patriots, steelers and a few other big time teams dont build in free agency but at least when they know they have a good player they keep em around, and thats why they dont hafta use free agency to build. We just take the cheap route and pray that it will work with second and third string players but it never does. Maybe if we went after a few decent players like we did for washed up Favre we could get somewhere. Look how hard they went after Favre… They gave him no choice but to come to the vikes. Can we see a lil more intense negotiating like that again?

  22. By Garrett on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

Spielman is doing what should be done. Upgrading positions of outgoing free agents with better players. Someone has already said it but it needs to be said again.

    Visanthe Shiancoe with John Carlson

Steve Hutchinson / Anthony Herrera with Geoff Shwartz / The draft (Kalil hopefully)

Ryan D’Imperio / Jimmy Kleinsasser with Jerome Felton / Lex Hillard

I believe if we sign OJ Atogwe then with a good draft, we will have a MUCH IMPROVED team next year. All this whining about FA is nonsense. Just be glad that we are actually starting to plan for the future as well as the present instead of trying old veterans in the hopes of a superbowl THAT YEAR.

Ponder will never start 16 games, he will get hurt. We have not had a good secondary for years. Jared Allen & Chad Greenway is our defense. Hilliard is a awesome pick-up. 2-14 sound right?

  25. By vike320 on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

The Vikings aren’t thinking. They need offensive line or ponder won’t have a bone left in his body. They also need defensive backs we better have a heck of a draft. They won’t have a chance if we don’t have any cap room. Why waste it on useless positions???

I will tell you this that it starts at the top and I am not impressed. We better get this stadium thing figured out or none of this talk matters. The state of Minnesota really supports the Vikings on Gameday but what about when it really counts. I live in NY and I will never watch the LA Vikings. You guys already lost the LAkers to LA so please don’t give up on the stadium push. Please!!!

Die hard Viking fan since ’73 from NEW YORK. I hate the YAnkees, Giants, Jets, Bills and Rangers. Go Wild, Gophers, Twins, Twolves and Vikes. This is a great sports city but there is a black cloud over it for some reason. You should have more Champions than you do.

How does Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, St Louis, Green Bay, and Indianapolis get champions over us? We have had more hall of famers, division titles, NFC Championships, stat leaders and so on while these other teams and cities had HEART.

I have been actually physically sick over many of the Viking losses throughout history. Many of them go down in history and are still really unbelievable thinking about them today.

Let’s hear the horn from the Norseman and get to and WIN a Super Bowl someday. 1978 is a long time ago to not even be in one again. Your city needs a Champion again and it really should be the Vikings. I am glad the Lynx did it and I am proud of them and the city for supporting them…it is just not the same.

Since Musgrave loves 2 tight end sets, he should be giddy at the prospect of an All Tight End set with:Carlson, Rudolph, Reisner, Shuler and Hardy!! Can’t wait to see how that will bamboozle the defenses. Then again, they might use 7 linebackers

Atogwe and Bullitt are both Safeties. Atogwe is a FS and Bullitt is a SS. Bullitt is the cheaper option but Atogwe is a way better player. NO Plax or T.O. to much EGO for a young Qb to handle.

Hey Snake is your last name Pliston,I agree that the Vikings want to build thru the draft and not be a major player in FA but when a player like LaRon Laundry was availible for several days after the start of FA and we didn’t pull the trigger it makes me seriously mad. The thing about FA is these are players that have been in the nfl for 3 or 4 years there is a good body of work (film) on these players so you can judge how they performed at the nfl level. And by the way Favre was not washed up when they first got him he took us to the championship game,if not for bad officiating and the cheating Saints we would have won the superbowl that year they probably paid off the officials with their bounty money on that game.

I’m also from n.y upstate albany, Been a die -hard Vikings fan since 1970.
The Purple People Eaters. Like my fellow reader from N.Y HATE New York teams especially the Yankees and Giants. Im a Red Sox fan.
The Vikings and Red Sox have a lot in common. They had a lot of Heartbreaks.
The Vikings I hope management makes some good sound decisions in the draft.
We need youth good young players that are hungry and want to win.I truly believe that Vikings can be playoff bound in 2012 if they play thier cards right in the draft. They still could of picked up 1 or 2 free agents to fit thier needs such as a cb,ol or wr I hope they’re smart and do, 1977 has been a long drought for my beloved Vikings. I hope they win one before Armegeddon comes. SouthpawSteve.

We could spend our money on some great corners, safety’s, or wide receivers, but we won’t be good for 3 or 4 years. We’d waste our time and money trying to rebuild with big name free agent signings. Take Kalil, build an offensive line around him and maybe try to snag a cb or wr. Then wait for next year or the year after to make big free agent signings.

  37. By Dustin on Mar 22, 2012 | Reply

Also, there seems to be a lack of talk about trading up into the first round. We have the 35th pick, make that the 25th pick and we can get a starting caliber db in this db heavy draft. Or I’d even take a 2nd offensive lineman if there was a quality one. What better time to build an offensive line then when you’re at the bottom? A strong offensive line is the key behind rebuilding this team and is the rock behind most dynasty football teams in history. Get it now when we aren’t one skill position player from the playoffs and you’re deciding between boosting the line or getting that player of need.

I’m glad we cut Ayodele he did nothing for us last year and I just don’t like him. The back ups played much better and I’m glad to see them get the money and its gonna be a good competition to see who gets the starting job between Guion, Evans, and Ballard I like all of them and I think Guion will end up as the starter I think he’s a good player I also like Ballard a lot and think he will have a good shot at become the starter around mid-season either way I’m happy with all three and they give us some good depth. Go Vikings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why do we think that a bunch of 20 year old kids are going to make an impact in MN? By the time that happens AP and J.Allen will be retired and we’ll be searching to replace them… gotta do both…draft well and pickup in FA! All the good teams in the NFL do BOTH!!!!!!!

to sir greasy panda… ummm talk about history, you say building a team doesnt require free angency. you need to make big moves to win, not by signing a bunch of ppl that we dont need. we need, cb, fs, ss, etc. last time i checked we(vikings) havent won superbowl since the late 1960’s. the head coach need to get his head out of his thing and start making smart moves. i’ll be the first to say this but vikings need a new head coach

I really like the signing of Hillard. Nice young Miami RB who averaged 70 yards a year. Nice! I apologize for earlier comments about the Spielman signing so-called “junk” players from puff teams who will play for the minimum. And why sign DT Jason Jones when we can get our trusty rusty DT Evans back; averaging just over a tackle a game. Nice! The strategery of Dutch and Spielman is coming clearer each day. I mean its not like the head coach is the lowest paid coach or a so called VikingsMart discount product of the brain trust of ownership and the front office. I am certain that VIkingsMart will have pleanty of door buster values for each game. See ya’ at the game!

I will go ahead & say it again & again the same thing I have been saying for the last 5 years…. The coach is an IDIOT still stands ! Can you say….
Bill Cowher ! The Vikings are the best in the league regarding letting good players & coaches get away. Anyone remember Brad Johnson & Rich Gannon ? While they were backups I was screaming for them to be starters then their gone & they next thing you know there both playing in the Super Bowl.. Anyone remember Mike Tomlin, Tony Dungy & Brian Billick ? All have gone on to win Super Bowls after leaving Minnesota. One thing Minnesota does well it seems is suppling the NFL with Head Coaches & QB’S meanwhile clinging to the idiots ! The signing of Donovan McNabb speaks for itself regarding the current head coach & his football brilliance ! I guess it will take the Owners 3 more years to figure that out as well…It is getting very difficult to be a VIKINGS fan… What a shame !
