Two For Tuesday: Vikings Sign Free Agents

Posted by Mike Wobschall on March 20, 2012 – 4:59 pm

On Tuesday afternoon the Vikings re-signed a familiar face to fortify defensive line depth and they reached agreement on a free agent contract with a new player to beef up the RB stable.

DT Letroy Guion, who hit the open market last week, was re-signed by the Vikings and figures to be a regular member of the DL rotation under new position coach Brendan Daly. Guion was a 5th-round pick of the Vikings out of Florida State in 2008 and will turn just 25 years old in June.

The Vikings also signed RB Jerome Felton, who was also selected in the 5th round out of Furman in the 2008 NFL Draft. He was selected by the Detroit Lions and played there for three seasons. He’s also spent time with the Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts. Interestingly, Felton’s Mother, Sabrina, is German and was a former professional gymnast and his brother, Simon, served in Afghanistan with US Army.

Great! Mr. Can’tLookAtTheBallAndThinkAtTheSameTime himself, Letroy Guion!

Like the Wendy’s commercials of the 80′s…”WHERE”S THE BEEF?” All fine and dandy to sign free agents, but when are fans gonna see some moves by the Vikings Office to bring some sort of proven talent to the team? Make a move already people!!!

Wow huge signings way to go Vikings. We are going to be terrible for another 5 years with these clowns running the organization and that dip for a coach.

  4. By rye on Mar 20, 2012 | Reply

how many third string running backs do the vikings need? Didn’t they must sign one a few days ago?

  5. By jdude on Mar 20, 2012 | Reply

Well we really didn’t need a back (full, or running back), and Letroy Guion is not really that much of a big pick up. This is the guy we hired to hire get our team back to play off status.

  6. By Spencer on Mar 20, 2012 | Reply

Hopefully we can aquire Ted Ginn in the upcoming days. He is easily a top 3 returner in the league right now. I have nothing against Marcus Sherals, but he is no Ted Ginn in the return department. Last season Ginn returned multiple punts for TDs and was always a constant threat to take it back for ’6′.

Now the knock on Ginn is that he cant catch, but nonetheless he still has big play capabilities. As a 49er they ran the “Jet Sweep” with him and it was so effective because once he gets to the outside, nobody could keep up with that 4.2/40 speed. So if he were to come here he could give us a that big play potential and another weapon for Ponder.

Carlson i can understand he is younger and better than Shenko. even Guion has shown promise… but really another running back?… SO far in free agency they have addressed the only 2 things that didn’t need to be addressed….

  8. By adrianjedipeterson on Mar 20, 2012 | Reply

for real tho our d-line was the best in the nfl last year…. and our defense still sucked… get some db’s. they even replaced our d-line coach after they had one of their best seasons ever… and how many Rb’s is that on the roster now. Hopefully they just signed him to trade him or something….

  9. By Spencer on Mar 20, 2012 | Reply

While im not too thrilled about the RB signings, it is important. Toby has a very physical running style so we dont know if he can last a full 16 games. Hes not exactly the kind of RB to run away from contact. So these signings are just an insurance policy if Toby were to unfortunately go down.

Just watched the updated in the saints bounty scandal. I must say, as a Viking fan this truly angers me. They cheated us out of a superbowl appearance.

  11. By matthew on Mar 20, 2012 | Reply

I thought Guion was signed a few days back? I like him, seems to slow at the middle to end of the season though. These running backs are just for camp, Adrian, Toby, and Caleb King are going to be the three… I think they are just loading up, since we should be drafting DB’s WR’s and LINE and LB’s.

Heres what has happened so far …

    Need 3rd RB

LOST – Lorenzo Booker is a FA and was a speed/scat back
GOT – Lex Hilliard bigger RB/FB could be a 3rd down blocking back

    Need FB

LOST – Kleinsasser who retired also was our 3rd TE
GOT – Jerome Felton …. Wobschall just told us

    Need TE

    LOST – Shiancoe(32) and Kleinsasser
GOT – John Carlson probably a better younger Shiancoe. Allen Reisner likely is 3rd

    Need DT

    RESIGNED – Guion (25) and Evans(28)

    NEED PG

GOT – Nicholas Taylor … we didnt have a point guard last season

    NEED 3rd QB

RESIGNED – Rosenfels = whatever … Ponder and Webb

don’t get the running back signings, unless they are being dishonest about how bad AP’s injury is. We have a good full back in D’imperio, we don’t need these others. We need top quality receivers which we have passed on numerous opportunities. I am not close to the org, but I would hope they know something we don’t.

I like that breakdown Shawn, looks like the Vikes are trying to address their smaller needs through FA and are going to (hopefully) address the big ones in the draft. Spencer, I agree that it is good to have someone to fire up the defense. However, I woul rather have someone like Jared Allen who can do that job and still be a stand up guy. From that tape it appears that Cushing is egocentric, plays for himself (not his team), and has a temper. Guys like that always hurt team atmosphere.

This has been another joke off season, We need some weapons for Ponder, we got rid of our entire O-line, we have no corners or safety’s and the Henderson brothers suck. We need a big number one WR and a decent number two and that Aromoshodu isn’t a number two. Frazier you need to get it together!!!! Why not try to pick up Laundry or Mays for safeties, both better than what we have, you keep a wife beater in Cook and injury prone Winfield who is getting older and I would rather have Winfield playing Strong Safety any day. If your not gonna make a push to have a better team than trade Jared Allen, Kevin Williams, Chad Greenway and start rebuilding already!

with the talent we have right now, the vikings would have trouble beating some high school teams. i have been a loyal fan for many years and it is very frustrating with whats going on now and the last couple of years. maybe we could save more money by starting 8 on offense and 8 on defense. its time to come off that fat wallet and sign some decent free agents. start planning on who we want for next year cuz we should have the first pick in 2013.

I’ve proven my point of the fact that Joe Webb is not a great QB. Joe Webb is like Tavarvis Jackson. Except Jackson can throw and Webb can run. Neither of em are worth to be looked at as a QB starter. Ponder will take the glory and at the end of the season, Joe Webb will be gone. Vikings are trying to put him in other positions so that he can get some values in it so when the season end occured, they wanted to trade Joe with some values he has left. That is the answer. Joe Webb is the worst QB. PERIOD. I WIN end of discussion.

Very discouraging to see the Vikings do nothing in free agency. I’m not big on signing high priced free agents. We seem to get torched when we do that, but at least improve yourself at positions where you are terrible. Make an effort to compete. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad I’m not a season ticket holder. It’s hard enough to endure Sundays during the fall watching the Purple get out classed, at least I can turn the channel. I’ve been a Vikings fan long enough to remember the last 3 win season, unfortunately if 12-21-12 isn’t the end it looks as though I will see the next 3 win season too.

Vikings will get Claiborne as a 3rd pick to cover our CB. We will have a great DB to come along with our D-Line. Whats left is our O-line but with the additions of TE, we could use them to help the O-Line and a good FB to block the LB to give Ponder more time to throw. That is why we dont need to draft kalil as a number 3 pick. No point. Vikings will be 10-6.

I know more than you know crackhead. I’ve atteneded Vikings games for 15 years and I know how they works. You are just a youngins along with Shawn. You both are a rookies in this vikings.com. The way Vikings is doing they are cleaning up Brad Childress mess and put in the one they are supposed to be doing. Joe Webb is one of Brad Childress retarted draft like he did with Tavarvis Jackson. We will not see Webb at the of the season if he doesn’t do well on his new position as a WR. If he sucks too he is gone. If he does something to help the team and get his values back in, then we will trade him. More likely it wont happen because he sucks anyway. Sage will be a QB number 2 teaching Ponder since he is our future QB. I know what i am talking about compare to what you are talking about since you are in Joe Webb bandwagon LOL. Why dont you type “I suck shawn’s weinier”, would ya Spencer? LOLOL friggn rookies

I take back what I said, Webb and Harvin have roughly the same 40 time. Something about his running style though still makes me think Webb wouldn’t make a great kickoff returner.

I love Pocket Passer, I love the Cannon Arm like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning. C.Ponder has all of above. I am not interested in Michael Vick, Jamarcus Russell, Tavarvis Jackson, and Joe Webb. These people are a runners not a QB. A QB is a position that has a duty to throw the ball to a WR. Not to be an active runningbacks with no skills at throwing the ball. That shoud be considered as a RB. I do not want a QB that has good hands at catching the ball because that is considered as a WR. Why are we using him as a QB? It is like we signed a point guard from Florida to be our Defense back? Does that makes sense to you?

Yes our O-Line sucks but with us rebuilding our O-Line there is not point to have Joe Webb. Vikings is trying so hard to get our O-Line working again. Why not we put Webb as a WR or something different to where he has skills. His QB positions is not his skills it is his weakenesses.

Mpls. City Council holds Vikings stadium key

Article by: MIKE KASZUBA and MAYA RAO , Star Tribune staff writers

    Updated: March 19, 2012 – 8:17 PM

    Time gets short

Though the stadium plan faces other significant political hurdles, Rosen agreed the City Council now holds a key to the project’s overall chances. “We’ve made that very clear, that we need to have their support and we need to have that real soon,” she said.

Rep. Joe Hoppe, R-Chaska, chairman of the House Commerce and Regulatory Reform Committee, which would give the stadium plan its first House hearing, added that it was a “natural assumption” that City Council support for the stadium would yield more votes at the state Capitol.

    City charter an issue

Reich, who represents northeast Minneapolis, said a month ago that he was inclined to oppose the stadium subsidy package unless there was a referendum, as required by the city’s charter when spending more than $10 million on a sports facility.

“If we’re called upon to spend more than $10 million, we have a provision in our charter that states what procedures we have to do,” Reich said at the time. “I’m bound by those.”

If we have Webb sit on the sidelines the whole year as a backup I think we’ll be wasting his potential (however I still support Ponder as the starter).

Now all that is needed is a letter from the city of Minneapolis clearly saying that it will support the new stadium, so now it depends on the city, and that seems to be a long shot, oh well, maybe when the Vikings owners go to sell the team, someone from down here in the New Mexico area can buy the team and move them to El Paso, plenty of space for them down here, and many of us in the south west New Mexico area do love the Vikings, we would pay more in taxes to have the team here. Vikings Stadium Update: No Optimism Anywhere, Basically

Mar 19 2:04p by James Brady

Nobody is interested in the stadium as far as politics are concerned. As it stands, the stadium has actually missed a significant deadline – the one that says the bill needs to have passed at least one committee for it to remain plausible this legislative session. That bill passed on Friday, according to ESPN. Also of note from that report is a prominent stadium support giving … bad news.

Rep. John Kriesel said that he doubted the stadium bill could be approved before the end of the legislative session, suggesting that this next week really needs to show significant results if that’s to be a possibility. As the report notes, Kriesel is a strong supporter of the stadium bill, and won’t be up for re-election – so there’s no reason for him to beat around the bush. He’s likely telling the truth, and that’s a bad sign for the stadium bill.

  369. By celticvikingwarrior on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

Just a thought, but I was wondering if ANYONE on this site has considered the notion that the coaches/ front office MIGHT be very impressed with more than one or two of the player’s signed and developed over the last couple of
    years ?????
For the record, as of today we have on the roster:
    QB”s – 4
RB -4 (5 if Lorenzo Booker resigns)
    FB – 4
    TE – 5
    WR -6
    OL -10
    DL- 9
CB – 7 (granted none but Cook with enough talent to start-DRAFT AWAITS)
    S – 4
    LB – 5
With 10 draft pick’s, undrafted f/a’s and veteran releases after the draft, I feel we will be at least competative, but DO NOT EXPECT to win more than 2-4 games this year, thus being in great position to pick QB- Matt Barkley OR WHOEVER next year when we will be competing for the DIVISION CROWN and a POSSIBLE playoff victory !!!!

Last year they said Ponder was the most NFL qb. in the draft. Now they say he needs time and a mentor. There are other qb’s then that were not so NFL ready but seem to do well. Maybe we missed something last year?

  377. By Mike B. on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

I don’t understand why anyone would be hopeful with the picks we have made so far in FA. Most of these guys wil not start anyway. 2 fullbacks or #3/#4 running backs. 1 TE that may see more playing time that the others mostly to keep the opposing team off Ponder’s butt. 2 DT which will be part of the rotation and not starters. Looking at a WR that has played special teams in his career. Possibly 1 starting OG. This a lot to look forward too. Abdullah, the Henderson’s dont make us a better team. We needed to get 1 shutdown corner or 1 field stretching WR in this FA and we got zelch. We did succeed and overpay a #2 TE. Makes you feel real good doesn’t it.

  378. By Mike B. on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

I am not sure where all the fodder is about Joe Webb. The coaches made the decision that he’s there #2 QB. That’s it and Fraizer has stated as such in repeated interviews. This doesn’t mean he’s a bad player. It simply means he is not the starting QB for the Vikings. I also don’t know where some of you got your information that Ponder needs a mentor. The whole vikings organization has stated that Ponder is the starting QB for the team and QB of the future. They also stated they were going to give him the tools to be more successful this year. I am still waiting on that. There is one thing you all can bank on there is no QB contraversy in Minn. Ponder is the guy.

FA is turning out to be an unexciting prospect for Vike fans. Nothing amazing, nothing to sink our teeth into. As I suspected, it looks like the real pick-ups are to come in the draft. Still hoping we get a Ted Ginn suprise in our easter basket but I am not holding my breath. I am trying to be optimistic but it is hard seeing a strategy evolve for the type of change and improvement that needs to occur for 2012. I hope Spielman has the answer, otherwise I am beginning to see why people think the Vikes could be fleeing the state. Don’t think it will happen but still a looming topic. For a player with plenty of character red-flags the arrest puts Irvin’s draft stock in flux.

The 5’10, 183 pound Minnifield was clocked in the mid 4.6s in the 40-yard dash and complained about tightness in his hamstring.

Minnifield is currently ranked as NFLDraftScout.com’s No. 11 cornerback for the 2012 draft. That ranking and/or the position in which he’s rated could change following this disappointing performance.
