Don’t Let Vikings Inactivity So Far During Free Agency Irk You

Posted by Mike Wobschall on March 14, 2012 – 6:47 am

Many Vikings fans have emailed and tweeted me in the last 14 hours clearly upset and frustrated with the lack of free agency news surrounding their favorite team. The basic complaint is something along the lines of “We were 3-13 last year! Why are we sitting on our hands and not trying to get better? When will we start signing players?

I understand this emotion, but my message back to those passionate fans is simple and two-fold. First, keep in mind that as of this posting we’re only 16-some hours into free agency. There’s a long way to go here, and free agency often happens in multiple waves. The website rated its Top 100 free agents available, and only 15 of them have been signed.

Secondly, we shouldn’t be surprised at the Vikings inactivity to this point. At no point during the offseason have either GM Rick Spielman or Head Coach Leslie Frazier indicated the Vikings would be major players in free agency. And to be honest, I think being relatively inactive in free agency is prudent for teams looking to build talented rosters that will be competitive for the long-term. Adding starters via free agency is not an economical approach to improving the talent level. Just think about some of the consistently top-performing teams in the NFL over the last 5-6 years – Baltimore, Green Bay, Indianapolis, New England, the NY Giants and Pittsburgh. None of those teams build their roster through free agency. And none of those teams are mentioned in free agency news right now. Yet they continue to win.

I can’t think of one example of a team that has won a Super Bowl in the last 5-6 years and could attribute that championship to a great free-agent signing. The closest example might be the New Orleans Saints, who acquired QB Drew Brees in free agency, but also keep in mind that the year they acquired Brees was also the year they drafted WR Marquis Colston, G Jahri Evans and CB Tracy Porter.

Remember last year’s big winner in free agency? It was the Philadelphia Eagles, who surprised everyone by signing CB Nnamdi Asomugha and then also added DL Cullen Jenkins and QB Vince Young. As it turns out, they started the season 1-4 and finished out of the playoffs with an 8-8 record. On the flip side, think of the San Francisco 49ers. In 2010 they were 6-10, and then in 2011 they turned it around by going 13-3 and hosting the NFC Championship Game. No one considered the 49ers winners in free agency last year. In fact, ESPN’s John Clayton listed San Francisco 1st on his list of “free agency losers” in this article from last August.

Long story longer, teams do not win Super Bowls, division titles or even games during free agency. The best way to build a talented roster that can compete for the long-term is through the draft. It’s a clichéd football saying, but it’s so true – you build your team through the draft and supplement it through free agency.

So don’t fret, Vikings fans. The team has a long way to go to improve, but being active in free agency is not an effective way to accomplish the task. More important than the feeling you have right now is to NOT have this feeling on the night of April 28, when the NFL draft has concluded. I’d much rather be considered winners of the draft than winners of free agency.

ok well then we must be happy with our offense? Rookie QB, Offensive line incomplete, and who are our wide receivers cuz I do not know? RB full strength?? I see another 5 win season coming up!!!

    Thanks Mike W.,

I couldn’t have stated it better myself. I’m very happy that we are taking on the philosophy of building through the draft. This is a long-term, big picture perspective.

Its nice to be able to see the forest through the trees : ) Lets just hope the forest is seen in the future as a championship caliber team.

Good Luck Spielman and Co., I wish you success in your future endeavours with the Vikings.

By Wobby: yes, very early yet. Plus, as I keep saying, you build in the draft and supplement in free agency.

Not one mention of supplementing our team in this article ? [previous articles indicated the vikings might show interest in 2nd tier need positions( those players going quick currently). THIS is what fans are upset about. No need for spew about super bowl teams and the Eagles last year

I’m liking the philosophy! Build through the draft, and supplement through free agency. And seeing as we don’t have anything to supplement yet, better to be patient with the free agent stuff.

Rick spielman has never drafted good guys after 3rd round, the teams you mentioned building through draft have struck gold during their late rounds, we should have atleast tried to get a proven cb, I bet this season we are going to be 1-15

Although it is kind of gut wrenching to see these top players sign with other teams when we have trash at a lot of positions, I do agree with Wobs here. Great teams build through the draft, and maybe add a great player when they have enough talent already to make a suberbowl run. That being said we are not a great team and probably wont be for a couple years. I love my Vikings, but the reality of the situation is that we do not have enough draft picks to turn this team around by next year. We might have been able to do that if we could draft players entirely from the first round, like picks 1-32 collectively.

I couldn’t disagree more Mike W. with so many holes to fill on this team and the level of talent in the FA pool. We need to be actively recruting this talent. I didn’t think that we were going to be in the VJack running, but possibly the top CBs avaiible. So far no news at all. I don’t have the faith that you may have in Spielman and co. They haven’t done anything to impress this fan base. Inactivity just makes it worse.

If you think we are in rebuilding mode why even keep jared Allen trade him and get more picks bcas by the time we are contenders again jared will be old and so is AP

I have to say after reading your article I understand why our record is 3-13. We have shown over and over again that we dont have what it takes to be a contrending team. Everyone around our orginization is to timid and to afraid to really put them selves out there and do what it takes to become champions. I moved out to wisconnsin and I wear my purple and gold proudly here but inside Im smoking that we cant come together with the talent we already have and seem to put some more stars around them. Draft picks are unproven in the NFL and some of the free agents out there have shown that they can win. We need to step up.

  11. By Rob on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

I understand what is being pointed out here, but when you have as many needs as the Vikings have, you need to address some of them in free agency, or lower ticket prices during your “building a team through the draft” phase. The Vikings have 10 picks in this years draft as we sit right now, but realistically you can probably expect them to parlay 2-4 of those into lasting contributors. I think they should at least address cornerback through free agency. This is a position where you need to have someone that can come in and play right away. That is difficult to do through the draft, Morris Claiborne being perhaps the best chance at that. As a passionate Vikings fan, I’m just tired of them failing in free agency year after year. Signing Favre was good, but not for the amount of money that they gave him. That had a detrimental effect on future years and only now are they starting to dig out of that hole. Peyton Manning would have been a different story because he is a little younger than Favre was, and he is still a premier NFL quarterback. I am looking forward to the draft, and hopefully the Vikings don’t pull a Troy Williamson on us this year.

  12. By Jake on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

That’s all well and good if your fairly established team. The Vikes need both immediate and long term help. It would be nice to see them pick up a proven player. You draft based on potential, which doesn’t always pan out. We need more held than we can get in the draft alone.

When will somebody realize the fans need some buzz. We have just come off two rubbish seasons – seems since we got the the championship game everything has gone down hill. Last season 3 – 13, rubbish nothing to cheer about, we need something to cheer about! Pick up a great free agent does wonders for the fans, merchandise sales, a boost to the team and at the same time make other team look and say they are going to be dangerous. You can’t keep saying that there are teams in the league have won championships who are not active in FA. I don’t think any of them teams where 3 – 13. Also you cant keep looking at SF who turned it round last year. They brought in a whole different coaching staff and was the change they needed. We have still got the same people so the only way to get the buzz is to pay out for a star.

  14. By Vince on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

So let me get this straight. We have more holes than swiss cheese, a coach who looked totally lost in the second half of games, a GM who failed at his last two jobs, a QB who has an average arm and no one to block for him or to throw to, and this is the foundation we are going to build on? Id sit out free agency too. It might make things more complicated to actually get proven players.

  15. By sandiamond on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

That list of 100 top free agents includes non-need positions such as QB,DT,DE,RB. Also includes RFA’s that would cost a first-round draft pick.
By the end of the day how small will the actual viking consideration list be?

  16. By Nicholas on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

I say give Spielman a chance. He is GM now, which means no more excuses of “he didn’t have the final say,” etc.

IF we do fail to build through the draft (via picking busts such as tyrell johnson), and supplement with free agency (at the right times), then I will be critical. I do hope that we take advantage of this free agency pool, and trust that our inactivity is due to deals still being ironed out.

In my opinion: Its too early to try and lynch Spielman just yet. The same goes for Frazier.

  17. By Carl on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

Wobby i think your right we need to build through the draft but my thought is we need to add a few players in free agency not top teer guys but a few good players.

  18. By Gunner on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

Nicholas, how long will that take, somebody has pointed already you might get 2/3 players that can make it in NFL, with so many holes it will take a life time to get us competitive. We are lucky you can’t get regulated in the NFL because within the next year or so we might be picking first in the draft.

  19. By Rob on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

I agree that if the Vikes are going to rebuild to this point, Allen might as well be traded for more picks. He is by far my favorite player, but he will be past his prime in 3-4 years. With players lacking talent at almost every position, they are at least that many years out to compete in that division.

  20. By Rick on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

This is crazy, the team has needs at almost every position. There is no way to find good people to fill all of those positions and sti think we are going to be competitive. We need to be smart and get involved in both, FA a.d the draft. Its just crazy to think otherwise, way too many spots to fill. Trust me I woulx love to be proved wrong but our division rivals are bulking up with good players and we are just gonna wait it out? Well we might just be the old lions team in the division.

  21. By Lance on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

Those teams you mentioned Wobs were winning teams before 5-6 years as well. The reason why they stockpile draft picks is because they already had a team to let those draft picks learn behind for a few years. We don’t have that luxury unless you think we can seriously start 7 draft picks this year as starters?

  22. By jman on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

There is such a negative undertone to this conversation. 1. We are not a bad team, and we do have tons of talent. 2. Yes, I am very surprised that the Vikings are not pushing hard for immediate improvement since we are in the middle of a stadium push. That anger for inactivity will translate into lack of support. (Why should I care if they are not making any effort to get better). 3. There are a couple of holes that if filled will make the Vikings competitive, but if they are waiting for Chicago, Detroit or Greenbay to get worse, then we will be waiting for a long time. The key to beating these teams is going to be a strong defense, which we definitely don’t have. The current offense (with upgrades to the line) can score points, but if the d-fense is horrible, then it doesn’t matter. 4. Rebuilding means to make an effort ot enhance the teams capabilities, definitely use the draft to build the team, but lets grab some talent to help those young rookies develop. You can’t have rookies mentoring rookies……5. Lets build our offense into a consistent scoring offense buy adding depth and talent.

  23. By Gunner on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

How many season has it taken the Lions to be slightly decent – they have still a long way to go to being the best team in the league. We have also got in my opinion the hardest division in the NFL.

  24. By Nicholas on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

I really don’t know how long it will take. I understand that it will take a while to rebuild, it is just something that we have to accept.

I’m happy to see that we are not just going after a free agent QB as we have in the past to “slap together” a championship team. At least now we are taking the approach of building around a QB that we have drafted, and testing him to see if he this the real deal.

Ideally we will get enough playmakers on offense (on the line and skill positions) to gve Ponder a real chance at success. That will be the true test to see if we can build around Ponder or not.

  25. By Lance on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

Jman the rookie mentoring rookie part is exactly right. Perfect point. We will maybe get 2 starters 3 if we are lucky in the draft. After that its just a gamble on who develops and they will not develop without proper players to help them grow.

  26. By vikemike on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

With Spielmen and Frazier running the show with these junior college players, I expect the vikings to be the laughing stock of the NFL for years to come. The vikings have hit it pick in the draft EVER and now they think they can all the sudden learn how to build a team. This organization is a joke!!! This is the best FA class in NFL history in terms of depth and talent and here Minnesota sits spewing a bunch of rubbish to the fan base.

Lastly—-JOE WEBB IS NOT A QUARTERBACK…..I REPEAT JOE WEBB IS NOT A QUARTERBACK…..GIVE UP THE DREAM AND PUT HIM AT WR. He has the talent to make plays with the ball in his hands….Don’t make him think….He has proven that is not going to work. I am sick of people saying he provides a spark, Ponder provided a spark when he came in and was driving in the fourth quarter against Green Bay for the win, then fell pray to a wily veteran CB. As most rookies do, then he has some bad games and everyone is saying he is a Backup….please.

Wobs, the majority of those teams you mentioned were good over the past 5-6 years because they didn’t neglect their defense to the point that we have. Our secondary has been awful for a decade.

Mike B, Jeremy, and Rob hit the nail on the head. We have far too many needs to expect to make a good dent with the draft alone. The Vikings’ draft record speaks for itself, as Rob pointed out. It’s likely that 2 of them will immediately upgrade our team, and maybe another 2-3 will develop over a few more years into contributing assets.

Do you think the fans are going to be patient? Look at the sentiment on this blog – where the fans are privvy to some of the inner workings of the organization. 3 hours into FA most were already calling for Spielman’s head and burning their jerseys. Imagine what the UNINFORMED fans are thinking!

To make money, you have to spend money. We need some FA support. Game or not, football is a business to make money. Fans aren’t going to mortgage the home to attend a football game to watch another couple years of 3-13 football.

Mike Wobby – Do you think that the Vikings really like LT Mike Adams? Can they trade back a couple of times and grab a lot of players.

Mike Adams, M Floyd and Mark Barron all in the late first round
and Stephen Gilmore and Lavonte David in round 2.
All by trading back from that #3 pick.

plus the fans are not screaming for a huge named player…. not all anyways. but give us somehting…. We can still manage to at least snag up some lower valued FA’s that would have improved our team somewhat. Like Atogwe? skins dropped him to make cap room and he would be an upgrade to our saftey position would he not? unless he is still injured but im thinking is ok from what I have read

teams who have a good record of locating quality picks with their late round selections can take a chance at ignoring free agency, the vikings in recent years have not been that team, further remember that Brett Favre came in as a free agent and we had our best team in a decade, also two of the people on the top 100 list are people we have released. It just seems strange to me that a team that is 23 million under the cap and is seaking a new stadium would risk irritating their largest core of supporters and ignoring a legitimate tool at turning the team around a little faster.

If the Rams gave us a 1st round pick that they got from Washington next years draft and maybe 1 or 2nd rounders this year to move up to #3 for Blackmon. It could happen.

The Rams will still get blackmon and a future first round pick just for moving back 1 spot.

If Claiborne is gone at #6. We can trade back 1 more time more more picks. Multiple 2nd round picks and multiple forth through 7th and the additional 1st round pick next year would give us a lot options to move up to the back in this years draft atleast 2 times.

The eagles example is a joke. Remember the lockout last year? There was no time for them to gel and they came on strong @ the end of last season nearly stealing the last playoff spot from the giants. I bet the eagles are in the playoffs this year.

With so many holes in our secondary how can we not bring in some db’s for competitions sake? I can’t watch another season of being picked apart by opposing teams qb’s. Maybe we draft 1 or 2 db’s but these guys will be unproven and certainly wont fill out the 4 spots in the secondary that need upgraded. The online has been dismantled and yet we ignore some of the FA’s out there? The #1 pick of the 2013 draft is looking like the vikes…

All I am saying is that if the Vikings really like Adams, Floyd and Barron.

I can’t understand for the life of me why we would think rebuilding for the future is done strictly through the draft. Espn reported that this is the deepest and most talented FA class in 10 years. The draft has quality players in the 1st 3 rounds, after that players are lucky to make a team. So if we need to fill Hutch, Herra, Mckennie on O-line, and plan on bringing in Kalil in the draft, we still need two more O-lineman. Percy Harvin is the only WR we have since Sidney Rice left and we haven’t done ANYTHING to address that position in two years. Our secondary was one of the worst in the NFL and our best player is injured at least 4 to 5 games a year. AP and Garhert both have knee injuries (the 2nd one for AP). We haven’t filled the hole Pat Williams left last year and I doubt there will be another player in the draft other than D. Poe that even comes close. So here we are with gapping holes on O-line, WR and our secondary and we are going to address that in the draft with two quality picks in the 1st and 2nd round? Keep dreaming…The Redskins got 100 times better in 48 hours and we haven’t done anything. If we are going to be in the basement for the next 4 years, why not release management and coaching 1st then really rebuild.

  41. By Carl K on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

We would need 1 of the Rams 2 furture first round picks from Washington and 1 second round pick this year. 1 of the future 1st round picks would be used to move up into the mid to late 1st round. If we move back from the #6 pick we would have plenty of pick to move up agian if needed.

It all depends on how bad the Rams want Blackmon?

  42. By Craig on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

Carl K: The Rams moved back to get picks. They are not going to move back up to grab a WR at #3 when he wasn’t even the best WR at the combine. The Rams would be perfectly happy with Stephen Hill or Malcom Floyd.

    Craig -
We have no shot to win the division this year. Zero! We only won 3 games last year and only 6 the year before. Cap money can be rolled over and we need to be ready to re-sign Harvin next year. If you were the Wilfs right now would you give Spielman the green light to blow all the money now. Or would you tell Spielman to set you up for the future?

Agree that many positional needs can be addressed with this draft class, however, CB/Safety is NOT one of them. We are cimpeting is a pass crazy division, even more with Brandon Marshall in Chicago. No play for Finnegan at all, and LaRon Landry is still out there. He would be an instant upgrade, immediate impact guy.

I think its prudent NOT to spend big dollars via free agency. If the vikes can find mid range receivers and db’s in free agency, that’s good. The team needs to get younger in my opinion, so not breaking the bank is the right move at this time.

Mike you definitely work for the Vikings. I have been a fan since the 70s. As for not using FA to win, teams like the Packers and Giants do use FA. GB signed a very talented CB and the Giants obtained a RT and C in FA and kept Manning upright for the SB win and the running game going in the Playoffs. I do agree build mainly through the draft but you do need to supplement big time players or key positions in FA and Rick is not willing to do that and be a risk taker. New Orleans took a risk with an aging Safety from us and he had one of his best years, also got a ring. Know what the draft holds and use FA to get what it lacks. Since FA is before the draft there is risk.

The Rams could move back 1 spot and still grab the guy they covet in Blackmon and still have a future first round pick to show for it. And at the same time the Viking could collect a future 1st round pick and a 2nd round pick this year to move back 3 spots.

    It could happen!

If you don’t feel that free agency is the answer, then you need to get better at drafting, something the Vikes do okay in rounds 1-3, but after that, they seem to take a nap, because the players you draft in rounds 4-7, never amount to anything!! I hope they save a lot of money through FA cause no one will be watching or going to the games. Not after this. I dont think Rick S can draft anyone after the 2nd that will be a starter on any other team but ours. A new staduim? Rick trying to get a new city.

I think that the front office knows that we all bleed purple and gold, and that we will still show up at the games and turn on the tv every sunday. They don’t care that we actually want to stab our eyes out and show that we bleed that purple and gold.

    Dear Mike W.

YOUR ABSOLUTELY WRONG! As a vikings fan, there is nothing more frustrating than seeing these free agents going to different teams that we ultimately have to play against. Why not pursue Brandon Marshall? Why not pursue Vincent Jackson? Cortland Finnegan? Brandon Carr? It’s not like your going to lose those draft picks, you can still rebuild your franchise through the draft and get guys that can help you win now. Farve was a long shot and nobody thought it would work out, but look what happens when you take a chance. Ya it may not workout but if you bring in 1CB and 1WR that can help you win now, and you draft Kalil and guys that can jump right into other positions, you can win now and for the future. THATS WHY WE CUT HUTCHINSON AND ALL THOSE GUYS, TO FREE UP CAP ROOM FOR FREE AGENTS NOT PLAYERS WE DRAFT. So do something about it is what I say.

If we draft Kahlil in round one i’m guessing Percy Harvin will be playing RB and WR again and our defense will be even worst. Why aren’t we trying to get Brandon Carr and Landry instead of an injury prone tight end . I bet we’ll draft another one to

I agree so much. People are panicking over nothing. Sure it would be awesome to have a new WR, LG, RG, NT, 3 LBs, 4 CBs, and 2 S, but we would lose all our money getting the best players are those positions. It’s more important that we get young right now while we’re coming off a bad season, that way hopefully in 2013 (if not sooner) we can be like the 49ers and compete once more.

We need to make some moves in free agency. They let half of their offensive line and 2/3 of their starting LBs go. Make some moves to fills these holes. We only have 8 draft picks coming in the draft and you cannot try and fill all the loses in the draft!!! Where is Ben Grubbs he needs to be in purple?? A LB or two would also cool me down a bit.

I am not a fan of any FA actions by our Front office why release players to make cap space then not utilize it….we are going to suck for many seasons don’t even feel like watching the vikes anymore at this point

I would be completely ok with the Vikings building through the draft, if they knew what they were doing on Draft day.. Instead we consistently end up with players that are terrible/mediocre like Tory WIlliamson, Cedric Griffin, Michael Bennett, Erasmus James, Dimitrius Underwood, Ontario Smith, Jon David Booty, and Ponder (could be good, but a full round before he should have been picked) Unless a players like Peterson fall into our lap they are incapable of building a franchise through the draft.. Also, I do not think the Vikings need to sign 5 or more players in the free agency, but 1-2 guys will go a long way on a team with this many holes in their depth chart..

As long as Spielman is the GM the Vikings organization will go no where. He’s proven over the years that he has no idea what he’s doing. Zygi and his brother need to start from the very top by getting a new front office who isn’t afraid of making a big move or 2. how in the world are the vikings suppose to do anything over the next 3-5 yrs besides rack up the most consistent number 1 pick in the draft for soo many years in a row, if that’s even possible. where they need experience the vikings got rid of the only experience we have. I’ve never been more disappointed. we’re in of the toughest divisions with the most experience i believe than almost any other division in the league and here the vikings sit losing players and not signing a single person other than Sage Rosenfels… seriously???

Vikings could have easily been in the playoffs this coming up year. they could have grabbed carl nicks who is still young and then drafted Blackmon. I dont care what anyone says, They are comparing him to great names like jerry rice. I would agree with building a team via draft, as well, if we did not have so many holes to fill in our roster. Also, this would require the Vikings Organization to able to judge talent and characters of players. The last how many years the only draft pick that seems to pan out is the first pick. None of the others draft picks have really turned out to be good ball players. So management keep up the good work of building a team via the draft. Hopefully, this year we will draft a player that is not projected and would not actual get drafted until the 3rd round. Your the best. Oh, by the way, the past couple years it has worked out for you building via the draft.

With all of the holes we need to fill there are two holes that we should be filling with all pro caliber players WR and DB. We will play Jennings, Marshel, and Megatron six games a year we need to go after carr he is young and he has the ability to keep those guys in check. Instead the front office plans on finding a lower level free agent or a 2nd or 3rd round pick to cover those WR,s the odds of that working out is slim to none. Spend some money on two of the key needs that are a must have to compete in the NFC North. We will only get 2 starters out of this years draft. We need a true number one WR it would be smart to trade up on our #35 pick maybe to the pats for one of there two 1st round picks and take a shot at mike wallace he will keep all the teams from stacking the box on us. I understand building through the draft but come on now lets get realistic. We need help at wide receiver, o-line, linebacker, cornerback, safety, special teams, etc and were going to address all of these issues in the draft without a 3rd round pick? So far the only thing we do is reportedly give 11 million guaranteed to TE John Carlson and resign Guiyon? It’s great to have the glass half full approach but again lets be realistic here. It’s going to be a rough year I sure hope we draft Blackmon.

We have been hearing from Spielmann for the last 3 years that we are going to build thought the draft. How is that going?

I disagree with Mike and his examples of the Packers, Steelers, Giants etc. He is making an assumption that our GM knows what he is doing in the draft. Yes, those teams have done well building through the draft because THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. At rate of 2-3 players a year that Speilmann hits on in the draft we are in the midst of a 10-12 year rebuilding program.

I guess we will wait and see and only time will tell but my cofidence in the Vikings building a championship caliber team with their current approach and GM is about a 2 on a scale of 1-10. I would love to be proved wrong.

This is all simply the result of a front office that simply has no clue. Give it some thought; watch other teams with a solid record last year; you know what they do? They make aggressive moves, not just in freer agency, but in the draft, in practice and on the field! The Vikings had a pitiful record last year, and they blame for this should only be placed on front office and staff, not the players on the field. If you need a reflection of that, these first hours of free agency are example enough. When a 3-13 team makes absolutely no aggressive moves during free agency, especially during a year with so many high profile players available, that says one thing and one thing only; the front office and staff simply can’t figure out what to do, or they are to scared to take a risk.

  118. By kalishnakov on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

2 players, only one needs to be signed, LaRon Landry, or Brandon Carr. Those are the only 2 players I am interested in seeing the vikes sign in free agency. Only one though.
Alittle FYI too, Carl Nicks the prized Guard of Free agency was a 5th round selection by the saints, Marques colston a 7th round pick. with that knowledge, if Spielmen truly knows football talent, he shouldnt have a problem finding a few late round gems. Provided nothing changes with the redskins/rams trade we should select Kalil or trade down with someone who wants him realllly bad. 2nd round Alshon Jeffery or Stephen hill which ever drops to us. And if we can get LaRon Landry our Secondary would be greatly improved. Ya’ll gotta remember to the defensive scheme we use doesnt call for top tier CBs it calls for top tier Dlinemen. Which you would think would be motivation to sign Mario Kart but hes to expensive. that and we have everson griffen who is primed to become a starter. Jasper Brinkley will be replacing EJ at MLB. Overall really the only Free Agent I see nessacery to sign would be a medium profile S or CB nothing fancy or high priced.

Also, using teams that made moves in free agency that ended up to working out (for the first year) is a pretty pathetic move Mike. Especially since your the guy who will propose a similar relation regarding what you might think is a positive move, ie; these qb’s struggled their first year and now they are great so therefore ponder will be to type of attitude, now mixed in with your down playing of what the eagles did in free agency last year, which by the way were all brilliant moves and will pay huge dividends for them, is simply inexcusable. You are the product of an office that has bitten from th fruit of failure and enjoyed the taste. Please Mike, don’t relate what other teams or players do or have become to anyone else; it simply doesn’t work the way.

Ok to everyone who is angry for the Vikings not going after NICKS all I have to say is we saved our selves on not spending a ridiculous sum of money! First why sing a FA who doesn’t fit our system. Carl Nicks was by far the best OL on the market but he doesn’t fit a Zone Blocking scheme, WHICH THE VIKINGS RUN. He isn’t quick enough off the ball to do his assigments. Same thing like Phil Loadholt, he is a great run blocking player but when asked to do zone Blocking schemes he cant fulfill his duties as a RT.

    * ok just an Idea but I think the vikings should possibly persue G Chilo Rachal San Fran, he is huge and has the ability to open holes in a Zone scheme..
    - go after Terrance Newman and Dan Connor. Most of all I think the vikings need to take some cash out and Get DT, Pat Sims and Reggie Nelson. Both would help our Defense out a great Deal.

    What do you guys think???

I think while its prudent to watch the purse strings and take our time in Free Agency, not all draft picks – as evidenced in our recent drafts – pan out, these are somewhat proven commodities that the Vikings SHOULD invest in! Just because they’re waiting for the state to help pony up for a stadium, don’t go Pohlad on us.
Build through both, as we’ve ALWAYS done, but do something or watch the blackouts start….
There are cornerbacks out there that we need, add to this some receiver help, too much to expect that ALL of it will come from the draft.
Time to start playing the game boys! WE NEED HELP!

I’m hoping the FA inactivity to date is simply a case of negotiating with a few key players and not wanting to say anything prematurely. We’ve got cap space so I do expect that there are things in the works. I do agree that you build throught the draft but I also agree with the fans who say we should identify 2 or 3 key positions that will help the Vikes immediately. How many drafted players start in their first or second year? If we’re lucky, maybe one or two from last year and perhaps one this year at OT. Draft, yes, but also address some iimmediate needs UNLESS the plan is to draft in the top 3 for the next few years,

Released 2 starting OGs, have needs for 2 starting CBs, and at least one if not 2 starting LBs and at least 1 starting WR. Also, i forgot we have NO safeties as Abdullah is one hit away from retirement, so add another 2 starting positions there. That is a minimum of 8 starting holes! The Vikes cannot hope to fill ALL those holes through the draft! They need to get going on replacing some cogs… Love the Carlson signing however he does not meet any of the holes above. This team needs to be signing DBs!!!! Now.

Paul Beaumount, I disagree that the Viking didn’t fill a hole with signing TE Carlson. With Kliensauser retiring and Shianco leaving, we did fill a hole considering this draft is very shallow in TEs. But I am getting worried about the OG and Secondary position.

We have to find at least 1 from each group in FA. They HAVE to. I don’t see another option. Like you said, they can’t expect to draft a starter with EVERY pick in the draft. Would be nice if we can at least get 5 starters out of our 10 picks.

This is a Joke! The Vikings have so much instability and are releasing every bit of talent they have. Draft players take 3-4 years to develop for the most part, to play at there best level. Looking at a few sad years ahead as a Vikings fan. And you say we should rely on our Draft???? Have you seen the Vikings draft picks in the last 10 Years? We are the joke of the Drafts year after year….Do I also need to remind you that we are in the same division as the Green Bay Packers who are going to be a solid team for the next decade? Rookies don’t (and won’t) beat the talent that the Green Bay Packers have. There lack of a few big moves is a joke. THE END

Wob, no offense but you sound like an embarrassed Pop Warner mom making up excuses for her kids last place team. NFL teams rebuild as they must but there is always pressure to win NOW! Frazier wins less than 8 games this year and he is GONE no question about it. Great NFL teams build and maintain their talent through BOTH free agency and the draft. Yes we need to draft well but rookies are always an iffy proposition. You draft as well as you can but expect most to wash out. Free agents are proven commodities in comparison. Phil Loadholt can’t protect Ponder and make holes for AD all by himself, he needs a top draft LT AND a few good FAs for the team to be competitive. That can’t wait for 3-4 years of drafting. Of course you want to draft well but by then you will have missed free agent opportunities. Smart coaches and execs know they must do both.
If your point had been the Vikings should wait for the sucker FA deals to go before finding value we could respect you. However, the assertion that free agency is not the way to build a winner is ignorant at best.
Please avoid the urge to shill for the Vikings front office and let’s keep the pressure ON for sound player management.

I don’t think many people expected/wanted a dramatic overhaul that involved throwing money at vjax, finnegan and Nicks… However we are competent and aware of what breeds success, talent through drafting, supplementing by free ageny…. But we also know what doesn’t, sitting on 24 million dollars of cap space knowing there are bargains and second tier affordable options at a couple of our MANY holes. Receiver, safety, cornerback, linebacker depth, oline depth… But we acquired a TE, that just came off a torn labrum, while we have a great young tight end, and a solid up and coming talent behind him…..and while all second tier corner talents are getting scooped up….ugh benny sapp and asher allen, starting vikings corners until cook gets out of jail or antoine gets younger…tell me why I shouldn’t be frustrated again?

A shill, plant or stooge is a person who publicly helps a person or organization without disclosing that he or she has a close relationship with that person or organization. Shill typically refers to someone who purposely gives onlookers the impression that he or she is an enthusiastic independent customer of a seller (or marketer of ideas) that he or she is secretly working for. The person or group that hires the shill is using crowd psychology, to encourage other onlookers or audience members to purchase the goods or services (or accept the ideas being marketed). Shills are often employed by professional marketing campaigns

I am highly disappointed because we all know they need at least one or maybe 2 proven DB’s because abdullah is gone, Johnson, Griffen, Sapp, and Cook (most likely) gone. They have already missed out on the majority of DB’s and Leron Landry and Aaron Ross is still out there as far as I know! So go get them before they are inked up! With the pace they are going everyone will be grabbed up and the Vikings would be left to signing 3rd or 4th tier FA’s most likely people fighting for roster spots! I know they want to save money, but the Vikings secondary NEEDS experience other than Winfield! LB is another position to address. So far they are addressing areas that are not in need with John Carlson at TE!

Spending 5 mil a year on a TE which we have a young good TE on the roster so what is the thinking going on in the front office. That cap money would have been used alot smarter in some of the areas that we need major improvment and not for a TE coming off of a injury. We could have signed shianceo for 3 mil on a one year deal and looked to upgrade on the TE position next year. To many other holes in the team to give a TE 25 mil over 5 years. What a JOKE!!!!! I am going to start looking forward to drafting in the top 5 for years to come.

The comparison of listing those six top teams not delving into free agency is not a comparable analogy, difference being(as stated) they keep winning but the Vikings keep losing. They need to sign at least one good player because there are too many needs.I have a bad feeling about the GM and those making the major desicions.

  135. By Richard on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

this is bs! Carlson is a good player, but not someone we need right now. Every other team is making a splash in free agency right now but us. We have the cap room to get a star and a couple decent players, but we don’t. Every year we end up having some money and wasting it on cruddy players. I would say we could look forward to the draft, but the front office doesn’t know to draft a good player. Khalil should be very good, but the rest of the line sucks, and by the way, who will under throw to? The vikings are a joke, and they would look fine, if all the big name free agents were not already signed. We have a horrible front office and i don’t know what direction this team is headed. The current trend with this free agency signing would be like us grabbing a de, rb, and slot receiver. Get ready for double digit loses in at least the next 4 years vikings fans.

Well there went Laurent Robinson. The WR pool is getting smaller and smaller and here we sit. It is looking more and more like we will be starting all 10 of our draft pick this year. Not because we want to because we will have to because for some reason we cant fill any spots on our roster with any free agents. Oh wait we just spent a chunk of change on a TE that is going to magicly make us a winning team

Fine we need to build thru the draft, but we haven’t changed the number of draft pickes we will get to look at and letting Hutch Herrera and Griffen go to free up cap room didn’t change how many we can look at. I’m thinking we ought to be getting something for letting those guys go and free agency is where thats got to happen.

I don’t think that “us” Viking fans are going to continue to believe your just wait and see BS. Building through the draft is all good but to do that alone takes 6-10 yrs (ask the Lions). We have great players in JA,AP, and PH, but if the Vikes are continusely bad how long will they want to stay, by the time we are legit they will be long gone, Why is so hard to see the team needs and build through both FA ( alot of impact players gone already) and the draft. Oh and by the way the Patriots do use FA to improve their team i.e. Randy Moss. Come Wobb we aren’t that gulliable, we want our team to compete sooner not later!!!!

WE get new QB with no one to throw to!!!I’m ready to scream!! I pity AD for being on this team! This yr looks the same. Prob last place. And we are drafting a lineman. WOW. I agree, we can’t go after one of big name free agent WR because of cap space more than likely, but we should have enough to spend on some offensive line. Spend the 1st round draft pick on a WR. Make our passing game a threat so we actually run the ball. Seems like anymore they think our passing game is a joke so them stack the box against AP and Toby.

I can’t believe that there are actually Vikings fans who think that by not being active in the free agency market so far is good for the team. This is definitely the biggest and most talented Free Agency pool that we have had in years & the Vikings do not try to get a piece of the pie & try to better their team, in any way? I can understand for not signing a big name WR, since there is a deep talent pool, in this upcoming draft, but I can’t believe that we didn’t even attempt to meet with some of the top available free agent Defensive backs….a much neededed upgrade.
Instead the Vikings decide to sign John Carlson, TE, for $25 Million, for 5 years. I don’t get it! Why would the Vikings draft another receiving TE…..where if anything they need a TE who can block, because both Carlson & Rudolph are catching TEs not blocking TEs, like Kleinsaucer was – who retired. To me that was a big waste of money, but hey what do I know?

The Vikings have thrown the towel in on this year.I agree that the best way to build a team is through the draft but our pour draft selections and aging roster has left us with a very incomplete roster. We can not draft enough positions to fill our roster even if we hit on every single pick, which we and every other will not. Every team in our division is so far ahead of us.Even the Green Bay’s need a Charles Woodson every now and then. They can sit back because there roster is stacked and we are sitting back like our roster is.Speaking for the fan base, if we had a awesome roster like the 2009 team, we would not be complaining, we would be happy with our roster, but we are not dumb. We know theres holes to fill and we are not filling them.I am still hopeful we sign a Laron Landry or some other decent secondary help. Please fill some holes, I would like to celebrate more wins than we had last year.

I love how ppl are ripping the vikings for not getting free agents now. Really do you really want them to go out and spend big for one or two decent players or rebuild through the draft and be good long term not just for this year and next year i dont understand that. Im sure it was hard for lions fans look at how good they are becoming just what 3 and 4 years ago they were the first winless team. Im sure their fans were complaining to but now i guarntee they are very happy that the team didnt just go and get the best players available in free agency. Would you rather the team be like the lions or like the eagles. I would prefer to suffer through i few more bad seasons and be contenders with young players that will be around and possibly win a superbowl than add a big name and win maybe 8 games this year were still in the toughest division in the leauge and thats not going to change.

sorry but the vikes need to sign some players. including erin henderson. They need to let his brother walk because injuries are taking there toll. sure we need to build through the draft but at the same time pick up some talented players to help the team. And I would be fully on board with the draft a winning team frame of mind but lets be honest. The vikings aren’t known for having great drafts. Normally beside the first and second round were just not good at that. If you not a great drafter you need to find other ways to improve your team.

this deal actually isn’t so bad. Carlson is tall and athletic, like rudolph, so now ponder has two great targets in the redone, and guys he can throw to in the middle. Percy Harvin is a beast, jenkins is an ok possession reciever. Now the vikings need a receiver who can stretch the field with speed, cause everything else underneath should be good. Now the bikes can look to improve the line and dbs in free agency, and just grab an athletic receiver with hands, cause who wants another troy williamson. If spiel man can make some smart moves at db and ol, and have a decent to above par draft, the vikkings will have a better offense and e next year, but of course ponder needs to progress. This trade isn’t too bad after all

Why over pay for a Free Agent in the first day? Is a wide receiver really worth 20 million dollars a year? yeah lets give a player more money than AP! After this first wave of players going the price for them should become more realistic and then they should start picking up some players. Would anyone want to pay the price of a new car for a 4 year old model? Be smart about it is the approach to take.

  169. By Robert on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

    I don’t get it.

Under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, rookies will not get paid as much and will be MUCH more likely to shop for any team that will pay more after their initial 4-year contract is up.

How can you build long-term with the draft if this is true?

  170. By vikemike on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

If we believed that Spielman had any idea on how to builda team through the draft, we as fans would be a little more patient, but the fact of the matter is that he CAN’T. He has proven in Miami and here that after the 2nd round he has no idea what he is doing. This team is a joke and its only going to get worse. By the time they get this figured out, AP, Allen, Harvin will all be out of the league. I wish we could trade our Front Office and Frazier for a 3rd round pick

  171. By NorthwoodsVikesFan on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

Time will tell – this is the first year Spielman has control, rather than just a say, in the selections. He deserves a chance. No other team has ever hit on all their draftees, either.

This is the first FULL year Frazier will have with his team. No lockouts, no shortened minicamps and preseason.

If they sc rew up again this year, you couldn’t trade them for a stick of gum, much less a 3rd round pick.

@DaVikeFan: thats not true, perhaps the best Vikings team of all time was the 1969 team, then the Vikings were top notch in 70 and 71, came back strong in 73! HECK! 76 wasen’t even their best season in the 70′s, 87 we wen’t 8-7, 88 we were 11-5, 1992 we also finished at 11-5, we made numerous playoffs in dates not mentioned, our time comes when the front office does their jobs and makes it come, time has nothing to do with it.

  173. By Jeffbleedspurple on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

And I am irked about whats going in FA, with the players we cut, including Hutch, there is no reason what so ever why this organization can’t dig a little deeper in the bank account to bring in a big name player or 2 and the OL or secondary would have been a very good place to invest a few extra bucks in to.

grubbs is gone now too, boy great idea clearing all that cap space so we can pick up some junior college players to fll out our roster and if you truly believe we need to rebuild through the draft, then what is the point of having AP and Allen around? Trade them for picks since thats what you guys think it will take to turn this team around. In the mean time, AP and Allen are getting older and Spielman has basically told them we don’t care about winning for the next few years. They deserve better, I hope they both ask to get traded

  177. By vikemike on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

So at this rate we will be protecting our $100 million RB and franchise QB with a 2 journeymen G’s and a possible rookie LT (which i believe will not be drafted because Spielman will try and trade back, so we get 2 average players instead of 1 great). Good investment there

  178. By rick on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

For the person who said trade Jared Allen, he is on the trading block as well as Kevin Williams, and Adrian Peterson, I think we sign Ben Grubbs and laron Landry though because later in free agency you get better value. And When we draft that stud out of USC your all going to get mad to. How many free agents have the Packers signed in the last 5 years one and a pretty darn good one in charles Woodsen. How do you think we were so good in the seventies through the draft even though that is really all there was. And im sure you think im nots for putting Peterson on there but really when was the last time a great back won a super bowl? So if we got two more 1st rounders and three 2nd rounders for them players. So all of a sudden we have 7 picks in the top 60 boy there is 7 new starters hang in there viking fans I have been a die hard for 40 years and I think we may finally be doing things wright!

I think this organization needs to look into the secondary and provide quality backups for 1st team players who become injured. I believe free agency has many quality prospects. I would think that Landry and Williams would be great assets to the defense. On offensive side i believe that we need to refortify offensive line to give ponder some more time in pocket to deliver and also protect AP . I do like the resigning of Sage. Seems like he didn”t get the chance and he has great potential. Seems that we lost focus on V Schiancoe (WHY?) Cannot wait for Draft Day to see where your heads are?

So by rebuilding for the future we’re going to tank next year win probably less then last year if we’re lucky we win one so we don’t match the lions. we’re going in with corners that wouldn’t make another teams practice squad and starting them we have one starting linebacker signed. 3 starting o lineman signed… two god awful safeties… and an offense that can’t consistently move the ball… who’s the best athlete next year that we’re going to draft

I don’t think everyone is hearing what Wobby is saying. FA will help us next year and maybe a few years after that, but building a team will make us a better team in the long run. Lets take the last two superbowl champions. First, the Green Bay Packers. Here are the players drafted by the Packers: Rodgers,Jennings,Nelson,Wells,Driver,Raji,Matthews,Finley,Clifton. I think thats a pretty good cast of draft picks. Next, the New York Giants: Bradshaw,Nicks,Manning,Tuck, Pierre-Paul,Umenyiora, Cruz,Diehl. I would think any intelligent football fan looking at those players would think WOW! I know that Vikings fans want to win now, but signing a bunch of FA’s is a way to make up for bad draft picks and may put a 8-8 team out next year, but if we want a long lasting contender, I agree with Wobby.

I can understand not making big moves in free agency just yet, and I can also understand the rebuilding through the draft concept. What I can’t understand, is why we havnt even signed our own free agents, besides Sage, yet. With so many holes to fill outside of the potential loss of players, not resigning guys like the Hendersons or even, as much as it pains me to say, some of the guys in the secondary, the Vikings are creating more holes for themselves to fill. The release of players recently has created even more woes, to me if your not going to sign some free agent players in a position of need, nor are you going to resign some of the players in that position and on top of that your simply going to release some players in those positions, then you better have a good plan to fill those holes with quality players. At this point they easily have twice as many holes as they have draft picks. Right now they are looking to be fielding a team with guys off the street just to have enough players on the field come game day. It”s time to make some moves and get all your eggs out of the same basket!

I would think it would not matter if you add a player or two from FA, the draft picks you will get in the future to build a team with will still be there, only difference being you may win more games by picking up some proven talent, thus knocking you a little further down the draft pool, makes no sense to me.

  201. By AMB on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

I said this would happen and here it is From the startribune. players that have gotten contracts early,” he said. “I think what we’re trying to do is find some players who we think are going to help us win ballgames, who are going to be able to contribute and then build this through the draft. Keep adding draft picks and keep our roster competitive year in and year out that way.” I SAID THE GM AND/OR COACH WOULD COME OUT AND SAY THIS RE READ THE LAST SENTENCE. I guess his idea of competitive is going 8-8 or worst.

I totally agree with all that disagree here. I have no faith in the ability of Vikings management and coaches to do the right thing. Long ago some former team members stated the Vikings will never win a superbowl. Management and coaches are too timid. Hate to say it but their character is a reflection of the entire team. Take a look at the division. The Bears, Lions and Packers are all getting better and better. With such Viking timidity, how in the world will the Vikings compete with these teams? I again see another horrible year with the Vikings bringing up the rear in the division. At this rate the Vikings will not get to a superbowl leaving no chance to win one.

I’m ok with the Vikings’ inactivity so far in free agency. They need to keep building through the draft and get a nice, young team together. They need to take Matt Kalil with the #3 pick, and then take the best WR available at #35. After that they need to use the rest of their picks on defense. The best teams build through the draft, and that’s what the Vikes need to keep doing.

Trent&Vikinglore- The reason the Giants and Packers were able to build through the draft is because they have the Front Office and GM’s to make good draft day decisions and picks, Spielman has not done that in 22 years other than the 1st round when he had the likes of AP and Harvin fall in his lap. Good teams hit homeruns late in the draft, The Vikings swing and miss after the second-hence why we are terrible!!!! and now they are interested in Alan Ball- this is the guy that got benched on a pass defense that was nearly as bad as ours. FIRE Spielman!!!

And watch him trade back this year and miss out on Kalil, Blackmon, and Claireborne. I’m telling you don’t count on this idiot taking either 1 of these guys. Boy that extra pick will do wonders when we miss out on the elite’s.

Good news with Cook, I thought he showed signs of a potential great corner last year…if we could just keep him on the field for experience he could pay dividends, but Asher Allen has worn his welcome…he is what he is, and that’s not good. Maybe we have resigned to leaving our defensive backfield in the hands of our young talent…something like… Cook and Burton as starting CB and Winfield as Nickel, and sapp and Allen as fillers. Then Sanford and mistral Raymond at Safety? Young… But who knows..may work. Though that roster would look and likely play better with a cornerstone player…even just one….like Landry or Porter.. They could guide and make our young ones better.
But I’m lost with the linebackers…or the Oline…

  211. By Dfish on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

The truth is that right now the Vikings have more holes on their roster than they do draft picks. They mathematically cannot “rebuild” this team through the draft alone. I am alarmed that it is well into day two of the draft and the only moves they have made is to resign Sage and sign Carlson at TE. I have no issues with any of those moves, we are lucky to have Sage as a 3rd QB or even a 2nd with whatever they decide to do with Webb. I also think Carlson is a good fit into a solid two TE set with Rudolph. But I don’t get how we have made any other moves. We have holes on the o-line, we are losing two linebackers if the hendersons aren’t resigned. We are losing people in our secondary outside of the fact they cut cedric Griffen. All the while the Vikings appear to have no interest in any of the people available in these positions! At cb we already lost griffin and they haven’t yet resigned Sapp. They also haven’t resigned Abdullah or Johnson at FS, have not resigned Adibi, katula, or Henderson x2 at lb. have not resigned wr’s Aromashodu or Camarillo. Herrera and Hutchinson are gone… And that’s just to name a few! Not all of those players are starters but enough enough of them are that you would think they would realize they cannot hope to fill those holes with starting players out of the draft! In most drafts your lucky if your first two picks are able start in week one. Right now the Vikings a looking to hope for day one starters in picks 1-6 if not more! This is very concerning but, it’s not nearly as concerning as the Vikings front office willingness to accept a couple “rebuilding” years and simply right them off in hopes that after 2-3 years with a losing record they might be able to make the playoffs… If your not fielding a team that you can expect to compete to the end, why are you fielding a team at all?!?! Here’s hoping we at least see the Vikings expresses interest in somebody tomorrow..

  212. By Dfish on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

I’d also add that I think Speilaman’s drafting is probably above averageand not poor like many of you believe. The problem, in my mind lies in the inability of the Vikings organization to properly utilize and field the players acquired. I hate to beat the Joe Webb horse to death but it’s a perfect example; drafted in the 6th round (I believe but correct me if I’m wrong) Joe Webb has a tremendous amount of athletic ability, and a charisma that ignites a team in even a losing situation. In most organizations, this is a guy that you would do anything to find a way to keep im on the field for as many plays as possible. When you have a guy that has more athletic ability than anybody else on the roster (according to many) and can provide the kind of spark that causes everyone around him to play better, you find a way to keep him on the field. Drafting him was brilliant, not utilizing him as much as possible is what kill is exactly th type of that kills the team.

What Spielman doesn’t get is that the best news Viking fans have had in the last two years is that Cook was found not guilty. (Even calling that good news is a stretch) Since the 2009 NFC championship game Vikings Fans have endured two miserabe seasons on the field and talk of the team leaving for LA off the field. We have been forced to watch an injured AP play in a meaningless game against Washington which cost us AP (I hope I’m wrong but runnng backs are never the same after ACL’s) and the second overall pick which has now been traded for three first round picks and one second rounder (Gee, those wouldn’t have helped in our drive to rebuild through the draft). Spielman could have energized our fan base and given us some reason for hope. Instead we are left, like Cubs fans, being asked to be patient and trust in their long term rebuilding project. Here’s a clue: we don’t have enough impact draft picks to fill the holes on this team! Even if we did, what assurance do we have that we would use them wisely? Our draft record beyond the obvious first rounders hasn’t exactly been stellar. And that is what they are asking us to trust them to be able to do. Yippie. On the plus side we only have to worry about this for one more year then this inept group becomes LA’s problem.

this is very sad, obviously the front office doesnt care what kind of team they put on the field, all the fans spend to rout for there team and the team saves the money, so far we got a new te that didnt even play last year and they give him 25 mil. maybe we can hope for 4 wins next year, seems like thats what the team wants.

I’m extremely disapointed…..the NFC North keeps getting stronger and yet the Vikings keep taking steps backwards. Looks like the Vikes and Lions have traded places. Heres to hoping we win a game in our division this year. Personally I don’t think this organization has done anything to prove they want to win now or in the future. Typical Minnesota sports

  218. By vikemike on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

and the only way we as fans can change that is by no longer going to the games. If the vikings what to put a sh%t team on the field, there is no way they should ask for the fans to pay full price. If we want to watch bad football we can just go watch the gophers on saturday and use sundays to do yard work.

The issue I see with this philosophy is that we’re assuming that the GM, Head Coach, et al are capable of evaluating talent and “building” through the draft. Rick S. has been basically in charge for the last 4 years and we have a depleted, un-talented roster.

I have little faith in this regime to do what the mentioned superbowl winners have been successful in doing. If there are examples that lead one to have more faith than I, please let me know.

While there are some valid points raised here, you have to realize that the Vikings in their current state are nowhere near competitive. Sure, the example of the Eagles signing Namdi and Young etc. did not work out last year. But when you have the opporutnity to get young talent – like the plethora of wide receivers we just missed out on, and you do nothing, it’s frustrating to say the least. More importantly, the team appears to be doing nothing to protect the QB they drafted so high last year, and I doubt they can protect him with rookies…why draft him at all?

The inactivity would be tolerable if head-scratchers like the decision to go sign a oft-injured TE who has proven nothing in his years in the NFL for such a large sum, didn’t occur. It just makes the team less credible when they make a move only to shore up a position when there are other glaring needs to be met. Unless they know something we don’t…like a new TE/DB hybrid??!!!…I’ll stop complaining, sorry. Just mad.

Vikings front office has made some good moves letting players go, and not bidding into the red on several vets. But let another year go by. NO. We let last year go to fix the cap, and release some bad eggs. PLENTY of teams turn it around in a year. The front office expects us to buy tickets? They expect a new stadium? Free agency has a long way to go. But saying wait until next year is unacceptable.
Go get the pieces to run the tampa 2. And rebuild the line. And get a wr who can play outside beating man coverage. No excuses. Get it done

Go read Erin Henderson’s twitter page and you will see that we will need to replace him as well. So as of now we need a LT, 2G’s, 2 WRs, 2 LBs, And 3 DBs. You really believe this bafoon is going to be able to find 10 starters in the draft. He would be lucky to find 10 starters in 10 years. Good Luck in LA

What someone needs to explain me is what everyone means when they say “building for the future”. Rosters turn every 4 years with free agency. There is no “future”! How many current roster players were playing for the Vikings four years ago–the answer: less than 1/3rd. Regardless of the age of a player the chances are remote they be be with the team for more than 4 years–especially if they are any good!

  233. By Al on Mar 17, 2012 | Reply

We need a QB, #1 WR, RB, 4 OL, DE, DT, 2 LB’s, 2 CB’s and 2 S’s. How many draft picks do u think we have? The idea that they can build through the draft is crazy. We will waste the 3rd pk on Kalil. How many mistakes will ppl allow this front office to make? Also I see us overpaying for underachieving FA’s. Maybe not yet but once the Vikes start to get desperate then watch the money be wasted away. Speilman is the death of this team.

  234. By TWB-Vikings on Mar 17, 2012 | Reply

I have been a Vikings’s fan for a long time and in no time with maybe the exception of the Coach Burns era did I see a total lack of competitiveness. There is absolutely no emotion from the coaches or players on the sidelines. We have done nothing in free agency to indicate that the Vikings are even going to be able to compete in 2012. Even if we pick up the USC offensive lineman in the draft, he is only one guy, and a rookie at that.
I close with two thoughts: How can the Vikings Organization expect the people of Minnesota pay for a new stadium when they are not even close to being a playoff team. The second; there are reasons why teams like the Steelers, Patriots, & Packers win.

I read all this gloom and doom and how bad the Vikings front office is and yet a few years back we were within one game of the Super Bowl and have lately been hearing how maybe we should have gone to the Super Bowl if not for the antics of the Saints. Unfortunately the team has been hit with a number of unfortunate incidents that have caused disruption…….last year it was the Chris Cook incident……Bryant McKinnie…….also a new coaching staff…….the Donavan McNabb experiment…..this only because there was a shortened training camp and no preseason games because of the strike……and various injuries at key positions including Adrian Peterson….a rookie quarterback……..the year before the Metrodome collapse………a coaching change midseason……the Randy Moss fiasco resulting in the loss of a 3rd round draft pick……bringing back Brett Favre who was probably still not 100 % from the injuries sustained at the NFC championship game…….and more injuries to key positions…….yes we need help at a lot of positions but to all the naysayers if you look back at the horrendous season of last year nine of the losses we incurred were for 7 points or less and in many of these games we lead through the 1st half we just could not put the game away we did not get the breaks…….and for all of you out there that think that we have to make a big free agent splash just look at Philadelphia from last year everyone thought that they were the team to beat…..and how well did they do with the free agency splash they made… agency is for an aging team that is one or two players away from contendinig for the Super Bowl……we also have gone through a number of coaching changes and ownership changes over the years as well as the stadium issue what we need is stability at the ownership and coaching level as well as a settlement of the stadium issue…..

What I want to know is if we draft Kalil at#3 why would we let hutchinson go who would play right beside Kalil.I think Hutch would have been a good mentor for the rookie in his first year.

  237. By vikemike on Mar 17, 2012 | Reply

Keith-every team has injuries but they have depth to overcome that because their front office has an understanding of what it takes to build a championship team. What did the packers have like 15 guys on IR when they won, the Giants whole secondary was hurt and won the superbowl. And yes you can use Philadelphia as an example of what going out and getting FA can do, but they were the hottest team in the NFL for the past month and missed the playoffs by a game. They had new pieces and no time to jell, but when they did they reeled off win after win. Good players win games not the scrubs we like to pick up. Our team is a joke and for you that think otherwise get back to me in 3 years when we are still 3-13 and have lost JA, Harvin and any other good player we have. SPIELMAN IS GOING TO KILL THIS TEAM

  238. By rick on Mar 17, 2012 | Reply

Its all a play your own state doesn’t want to help with a stadium your politicians cant make up there mind why should the team try to win? This could be the last year in Minnesota the way things are going! And if they leave you will still be stuck with extra taxing to make up for the loss of its best franchise!

  239. By spads on Mar 17, 2012 | Reply

Why did we sign a second TE for $5M a year and blow 20% of our cap room when we have no idea how to run a two TE set? We could have gotten a top CB or safety for less than that but I guess our biggest need was TE. What a joke! We might as well trade AP, Allen, Williams, Greenway, etc. before you move to LA because there is no way a stadium gets done when we end up with 1-3 wins a year. Fire Frazier, if he was coaching the Pack they would be a 5 win team. He is about the most clueless coach I have ever seen. Period.

  240. By TWB-Vikings on Mar 18, 2012 | Reply

You know, there has been rumors that ownership wanted to move the Vikings from the start. Let’s hope this isn’t true. However, we let Rice get away last year & Hutchinson this year, one of the best offensive linemen & receiver. It doesn’t seem that Coach Frazier or the GM know how to put together a winning team. I thought going into the 2010 season prior to letting Rice go, we were a quarterback away from another playoff run. But now based on the inactivity, our needs in the defensive backfield, and the seemingly total lack of passion for the game, I agree with spads, 3 wins maybe all that we can hope for this year. It would be interesting to hear what the Boy’s @ the NFL Network have to say.

Why draft Kalil with the first pick? He can protect Ponder and give him time to throw the ball but if there isn’t anyone downfield to make the catch whats the point?

  243. By kevin on Mar 18, 2012 | Reply

What is going on in Minnesota? It is pathetic their level of inactivity in free Agency. Now that all 1st level players are gone and they made no attempt to sign their own good players. I can not understand what is going on. It looks like it could be an 0-16 season because everyone in our division has maintained or got better except us.

If they follow with an 0-16 season maybe they will fire the incomptent GM and coach, but by then the team will be in LA. It is dishearting as a long time fan to see the lack of desire of the front office to get the personnel needed to turn the slide, and overpay for the free agent they did get. I guess those in charge have no idea what a glaring need is, but for them OL, DB, and #1 wide reciever is a start.
