QB Sage Rosenfels Re-Signs With Vikings

Posted by Mike Wobschall on March 13, 2012 – 2:42 pm

The new League Year has officially begun and the Vikings have taken care of some housekeeping.

The team and QB Sage Rosenfels have agreed to a contract. Rosenfels will be in his 3rd season with the club in 2012.

The 12-year veteran played for the Vikings in 2009 and the final 5 games of 2011. A standout at Iowa State, Rosenfels was originally a 4th-round pick by Washington in 2001. He has 12 career starts to his credit, including 5 starts each for Houston in 2007 and 2008.

The Vikings need for bigger CBs just increased. Dolphins traded Wr Brandon Marshall to the Bears for two 3rd round picks.

A Dr. Lindsey something or other said that the marks on Baker’s neck were caused by an earring and the other mark was a hickie. So Cook could in fact be found not guilty. Startribune.com has the doctors full testimony.

CB Brandon Carr must be the main target this FA. With guys like CB Richard Marshall, Kelvin Hayden, and William Middleton as secondary targets.

Dt Guion is a good rotational guy not a starter. Vikings need a good run stuffer not a cr@ppy DIRTBAG(saint) like Remi. Get rid of him and use that money on someone with talent.

Its about a baseball organization trying to loose its fan base by having the worst team possible. If the owner loses its fan base then the owner can move the organization

Everyone’s gotta relax a bit. Free agency just started and we knew the Vikings wouldn’t be major players. Give it a few days, let the dust settle, and then make a judgment. Remember, when we signed Bernard Berrian in 2008 during free agency, everyone was excited.

Packers had everything they needed to build through the draft. They had veterans like Favre or Driver to mentor the younger players and nothing to lose while waiting.
The Vikings are lacking experienced player to tutor the draftees and stars like Peterson or Allen aren’t getting younger of healthier.
Additionally, building through the draft is fine, but that doesn’t exclude signing FA.

The Eagles didnt do well because they CANT stop the run. They have 3 #1 conerbacks, No #2 corner and no nickle corner. Their receiving core is softer than baby shlt. No one want to catch the ball in the middle of the field they all just want to go deep. And thier OLine is worse than ours. Coaching was not the problem

You can criticize all you want after the draft, but its not like we have loads and loads of cap space to work with, and its not like were coming off an 8-8 season and we where in the hunt. Frankly, we’re in a rebuilding phase. Draft first, then when you get back to 7-9 or 8-8 then you can attract bigger free agents.

Stop looking at FA as players we are missing out on.

Here is how we look at it now. How will FA effect the draft? Will the Bears still be looking for a WR in the 1st round? Will the 49ers still be looking for one in the 1st round? How far will Michael Floyd fall now. Could he fall to us at number 35?

The experts have said it over and over again. This years draft class is deep in talent at the WR and CB positions. Why should we waste money on those positions in FA when we can get them for rookie contracts in the draft. We need players who want to win not players who only want money. THATS WHAT FREE AGENCY IS STOP STRESSING OVER NOTHING

Change of priorities in the draft should happen, but they may be overestimated. For example, the Bears won’t be looking for a WR1 because they traded for Marshall, but the Dolphins probably will if they manage to get Manning or Flynn.
Also, the 49ers did sign Moss, but they probably won’t rely too much on him.
Free agency basically doesn’t changes the amount of number 1 receivers in the NFL, though it does have a bigger impact on a team such as the Vikings, considering they have a high draft pick on the second round.

OMG – why are we not one of the 8 teams to sign a big name FA?? Did you really expect that we would?? C’mon – we are on the Allstate “Value Plan” this year – cap space and all other things considered.

Pierre Garcon – gone – dodged a bullet there in my opinion.

Brandon Marshall is good, he’s f’in crazy….but good nonetheless.

I am ok with stripping (sorry Cook, no offense) our team down and rebuilding this thing from the ground up. Break some eggs – I like em scrambled anyways. Our brand of football has been stale for years – let mix it up!!

    QB Palko becomes free agent
    by Bob Gretz, CBSSports.com

To retain rights to exclusive rights free agent QB Tyler Palko, the Chiefs needed to make him a one-year tender offer before the start of NFL free agency. That didn’t happen, so Palko became an unrestricted free agent and can now sign with any team in the league. Palko’s departure is no surprise after his poor performance last season as the team’s starting quarterback.

We’ve actually gotten worse with the three vets that we released. There’s not even any reports of the Vikes even attempting to schedule visits with the remaining free agents. We NEED a CB that can play with Johnson, Jennings, and now Marshall. We shouldn’t be holding out breath for Chris Cook. We also need to address OL and WR, I’m assuming that the Vikes will just be content to sign some no-name to mediocre free agents. We’re never going to go anywhere with that mentality. The Lions were very aggressive in free agency in the past, plus their smart drafting. Now look at were they’re at.

It seems like every year we need to fill a position in the draft or FA. With all the experiments at QB and the open door for WR’s. Our secondary other than Winfield has been junk for years. I don’t see us drafting CB’s in the draft because we let our whole O-line go. So we will be able to run the ball until teams put 8 in the box. Ponder won’t have anyone to pass too because Harvin will get double teamed. Our secondary will get torched by Jennings, Marshall, and Megatron. It’s going to be a ruff 4 to 5 years.

Here are a few potential paths the Vikings will take this week:

Sit back and watch: Yes, the Vikings have cap space, but that’s space they can rollover to 2013. It’s realistic for the Vikings to stay relatively quiet this time of year with hopes that their 10 draft picks and a young nucleus will get the job done in the next two years.

Fill needs, but don’t overdo it: This plan would rule out the Vincent Jacksons and Cortland Finnegans. Think value, at modest prices. Think Robert Meachem or Josh Morgan at receiver, or William Gay/Jarrett Bush at corner. Then, the Vikings could add a guard or a linebacker (maybe re-signing Erin Henderson) and still have plenty of healthy cap space for the next year.

Remember, Lions linebacker Stephen Tulloch, a solid player, signed a one-year, $3-million deal. There’s great value for teams who wait for the market to settle.

Make a splash: Any team coming off a 3-13 season could use a boost, right? The Vikings want to stay young, but players such as Chiefs corner Brandon Carr and receiver Pierre Garcon, both 25, would satisfy the youth movement while still making a statement. But are these targets No. 1 options at their positions? Or simply really good No. 2s?

Everybody settle down, your acting like not signing anyone now is going to be the end for this team. I understand that you want the Vikes to add an immediate impact player, however, think of what it will be like if we let some of this cap space roll over to next year, we’ll be able to do what the redskins and bills are now. Don’t worry we’ll still pick up our fair share of players in FA, just not anyone too expensive, we’ll let this craziness blow over then pick the good players that everyone else overlooked who will go for cheap just to get on a team (not saying we’ll wait until the end, just wait for the huge signings to pass). We’ll wait for guys like Tracy Porter and Richard Marshall and get our big spending done next year when we hav a ton of cap space.

DT L. Guion nice signing bonus!

Letroy Guion is a defensive tackle that has flashed plenty of ability but failed to separate himself from the competition despite a golden opportunity in 2011.

The Vikings, however, are apparently sold on his potential and extended him a decent contract on Tuesday that could make him a low-end starter alongside Kevin Williams.

Guion’s contract is worth $9 million over three years. He received a signing bonus in the amount of $3.565 million.

The money included in this deal suggests that Rick Spielman and Leslie Frazier have high hopes for Guion’s future with the team.

I say lets get serious about re-building this team and trade a few veterans for draft picks, this year and into the future. I said the same thing last year to trade AP, we would have received several picks and players, now who knows what he will come back like. This team needs to totally start over, so lets get on with it.

  327. By Woodboat on Mar 13, 2012 | Reply

Hey, Spielman has been hinting since he got the gig that we weren’t going to go crazy in FA, and I totally agree with it. When you need 6 starters on offense and 7 on defense, breaking the bank on a headline type FA would be stupid. Couple that with the fact that the only way we could entice anyone to come to our team would be to overpay them (they sure wouldn’t come to the VIkes for the chance to compete for the title).

We are going young, and I’m okay with that. Young, at least to me, means getting guys in the draft, undrafted guys, waived guys, and practice squaders.

We were 3-13 last year. Calm the heck down, we aren’t going to be competing for anything this year. Lets hope that we can find 7 of the 13 starters this year, and pick up the other 6 next off season and be back in the hunt for the 2013 season.

KoN- I agree with you, but people naturally gravitate to the Chicken Little chant of “The sky is falling, the sky is falling!” Sage is actually a decent player and this only assures we have a long term veteran at QB who will not make Ponder uncomfortable, thinking his spot on the roster is in jeopardy, but also giving him a mentor. Everything will be fine.

So, just read an article concerning Scott Wells and his situation with the Packers. Seems he is looking for 7-8 million a year at age 32. The writer theorizes that the Packers are letting him sniff around and find out that he over-values himself and then resign him.

If this is true, we may be either overpaying for Wells, or just setting the price for the Packers, neither scenario really appeals to me.

We won’t win the division this year. There’s too much rebuilding to do. Might as well get a lot of young guys with potential, chance the winless season and get in an even better spot to build a young team through next year’s draft to boot.

Big name free agents are for the teams who have a chance to go to the playoffs. We are in rebuilding mode, and you can’t rebuild with vets who are on the cusp of retirement. Be patient. One more down year appears inevitable – look for the long-term advantages.

    Chris B…

Heh… I actually brought up the subject of trading AP before last year, and got blasted for it. It’s too late now, he’s damaged.

My arguement for trading him last year was that he’d have far more value to another team than he had for the Vikes. With a very limited passing game and a horrible O Line, a top end RB is pretty useless. If you traded him for a couple of top end O Linemen/ draft picks, we could get by with Gerhart/Booker, and our passing game would be helped with the added protection. AP, while he is one of my favorite players, is wasted playing for the Vikes. If he played for the Packers or some other team with a passing game and a line, he would be unstoppable. (Of course, I’d hate to see him go to the Packers, but you know what I mean…)

  356. By Woodboat on Mar 13, 2012 | Reply

Which “good players” did we let go, Chris?

Hutchinson has slowed way down and wasn’t worth the 7 mill he would be owed.

The Henderson bros haven’t signed with anyone else yet, and I haven’t seen any news of them being courted by others. This may be a common ploy used by teams to get the players to realize that they aren’t as valueable as their agents tell them they are. Negotiation ploy.

Looking down the list…. hmm… the phrase “Don’t let the door slap you in the @ss on the way out” comes to mind. They all NEED to go.

I don’t work for the team, and blast them quite often. Just not when they are doing the right thing. I’d be pi$$ed if they signed Vincent Jackson… because that would be the only guy we could have picked up. We need THIRTEEN GUYS!

  357. By Shawn on Mar 13, 2012 | Reply

plenty of 25-27 year old guys we could have signed during a rebuild.

so if 27 is too old its time to trade Chad Greenway whos 29. and since Spielman doesnt want to win might as well trade AP and Jared Allen to

WTH … just cut the whole team and build a 53 man roster of undrafted free agents

Spielman had the 6th most money in free agency and did nothing … we were so close just 2 years ago and now there is nothing to look forward to in football. Spielman will draft trent richardson and a TE in round 2

Chris B, you’re right, maybe we do work for the Vikings, or it could also be that we understand that you need to BUILD a team; pro football is not a pickup game. Teams that build through the draft are almost always better than teams that build through FA. The early part of free agency exists so pretty good teams can get the one or two players that they need to push themselves over the top, not for teams that need to fill holes all over the field.

  362. By LarsonFamily on Mar 13, 2012 | Reply

Shawn- More like the Vikings will Draft Morris Cliaborne, CB, LSU on the third pick of the first round. I believe the Vikings will trade next year 1st round pick and some 3rd or 4th 2012 picks to get 2 picks in 1st round, to select either Riley Reiff, OG, Iowa, or Mark Barron, S, Alabama.

  363. By LarsonFamily on Mar 13, 2012 | Reply

I hope that Ponder gets a true chance to prove himself in the next couple of seasons. This next season may not be pretty as well…but hopefully we see improvement/development. If Ponder is unable to start reading defenses after getting a better O-line and more playmakers around him, then I will hope to see us move in another direction.

There is no reason to panic…I was just looking at the Vikings free agent pool…The roster as a whole actually…

Vikings have about 14-16 players they will be looking to replace or a possible trade here or there…

Vikings have at least 10 picks coming up in this springs draft…That only leaves the Vikings needing to find 5-7 players outside of this springs draft to fill that 53 man roster…

Remember the spring draft leaves plenty of un-drafted young talent all over in the college ranks…And talent the Vikings might have seen first hand during senior bowl week…So things might not be as bad as they look early for the Vikings…And might pay off huge late by waiting things out…: )

I usually back you, Shawn, but I think you are off on this one. I think letting the guys go that we have is a good sign (except maybe the Hendersons). I think that letting the dust settle and not getting in bidding wars for high end guys is the right way to dig our way out of the hole we are in. If we take Kalil and sign Wells, we are already better then we were last year. One of the young guys we picked up last year and trained has GOT to be better than Herrerra. They are going to waste another year on Leadfoot Loadholt, but what are ya gonna do? I think we’ll be fine at RB, TE, and yes, WR. There is noone at WR currently on the team to get excited about (other than Harvin), but they aren’t horrible.

D Line, Guion? I don’t know, but we can’t draft/sign for EVERY need we have.
Our entire DB squad needs to be revamped… we’ll draft a CB in the 2nd and Cook will be back (not sure I want him, but…).

How many games would we have won last year without McNabb starting? Our first four or five games we were dominating the first halves– a large number of our losses were by a touchdown or less. Momentum and confidence are strange bedfellows for a team of athletes– have more or less and the whole team swagger and win column changes. Very possible last year was more of an 8-8 year. I see this year as being a good year- maybe not Superbowl, but a winning record.

  411. By KoN on Mar 13, 2012 | Reply

Exactly, Shawn, now imagine if we let some of that roll over into next year by signing under-the-radar guys this year. I can almost guarantee that our record will improve next year and so more free agents will be willing to come here for less money because they won’t be taking as much of a chance with their career on a 5-8 win team team as they would be on a 3 win team.

  412. By NovaScotiaVike on Mar 13, 2012 | Reply

I see certain tires as being a good year, but not this football team.

  413. By Woodboat on Mar 13, 2012 | Reply

Well…. then let me back up a few steps, Shawn. I WILL still contend that 24 million spread out over the 13 guys I BELIEVE we still need doesn’t go very far. BUT, I know that the VIkes don’t agree that we need 13 new starters, so… they probably should be firing at a top end guy. Carl Nicks? Wells?

lol 10 – 6? hahaha I am a long time vikings fan and I will always be. That being said as a real fan I know when our team is n trouble. This year we should be bracing fora rough year. MAYBE 5 wins this year. Even if we draft well and get Kalil we are still far out of range in out division. My guess we wont be competing for about 3 more years. Face it guys its rebuilding time. We didn’t have the players before and we wont this year for sure.

let me guess they used the “its early” as the excuse…last i checked most of the talented free agents get signed right away face it this team is the laughing stock of the league 10-6?, 8-8?, try 0-16 lets be realistic peterson coming back from his injury is just gonna leave harvin as only talent left and with his headaches whos left?

Mcnabb had been a bad choice sure. But Ponder didnt win many games himself either. It was nice to see what he could do though. Just to put this out there I like Webb better. However, I am feeling a little uncomfortable not because we didn’t sign a big name. I don’t think one over priced player was the answer anyways. It’s the fact we signed no one. Which makes me think what are they planning to do with so many holes and relased so many players? which in the back of my head makes me think Kalil is a no go. Possibly trading our 3rd draft pick to fill more holes? I’d love to see Kalil here in purple but I don’t RICK at all. He did mention the notion at the senior bowl he is willing to trade that pick

I’d have to disagree with you wooboat. The Vikings needed to be proactive in free agency this year. With only two players picked up, we would still be well under the cap and the team would be better before even starting the draft. One O-lineman and one secondary guy in FA and one O-lineman and secondary guy with our #1 and #2 picks and we would improve our roster ten fold. After the 2nd round player talent really drops off. So really we only have 2 to 3 quality picks not 10. You can’t build a team with backups.

The draft is April 26th and if they trade back to get more picks without bluechip ratings, I’ll really consider sealing both of my AP jerseys and draw a new team out of a hat. Vikings Fan since 1986. My God, some people are geting absolutely ridiculous now, really Shawn 0-3 wins, you can tell that just by the fact that we didn’t sign anyone in the FIRST FEW HOURS of free agency. Also we haven’t lost all of the players that you listed, all that it means is that we haven’t signed them back yet. Free agency runs throughout the football season, you don’t have to worry. Oddly enough, Rick Spielman and his crew are in the position that they are in because people trust them. I give them the benefit of the doubt; they spend every day of the week doing this and their job security is based on how well they perform, us bloggers on the other hand spend hours a week doing this and can say whatever we want. Please, everyone just settle down, and if the Vikes haven’t looked at anyone by Thursday, THEN you can freak out.

I see our O line being one of the best in the league with Kurt Warner, um, I mean Chr1stian Ponder slinging the ball all over and a rejuvenated running attack with AP and Gerhart. Kyle Rudolph will rival that beast TE in New England and our pass rush will be unparalleled. Yes, I can see the Vikings sailing into new waters this season– deep waters, well into the playoffs.

He has demonstrated a lack of vision, however kind he comes across, I am going to be in retirement until he is.

We have a #3 pick that could be worth a lot in a trade. IMO, the Rams want Blackmon and or Kalil. So, they will need to move back up. (the Rams signed CB Cortland Finnigan).
I think Spielman really like OT Mike Adams.
I am beginning to believe the the Vikings will trade the #3 pick and try to walk away with CB Claiborne and OT Mike Adams… and have an extra 2nd round pick or more.

Could that delay have anything to do with the “bountygate scandal” that the Redskins are a part of ???…

For onething, we will not benifit from trading down. This team is beyond that right now when we dropped so many players. We can’t fill all the starting roles that need to be filled in this draft. The lower we fall with our picks the lower the quality of talent we can choose from and is more of a gamble. Kalil at 3 is at least pretty surething at spot we need desperatly. He is a talented player most likely a future pro bowler and on a team right now limited on talent why give that up? We could stockpile picks and hope they all work out and fill all the holes…. but hey we are the patriots and we dont have a solid team for them to play behind for a few years.

  574. By Mtirajmes on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

The Vikings just need to fire the whole backfield and start over. Find one quality free-agent and one quality draft pick and just build on that. The last time the Vikings had a descent back-filed was when they had Joey Browner & Carl Lee. No matter how good the team has been, that secondary has ALWAYS been a thorn in the Vikings side. When are the Vikings ever gonna get it right? As good as Kalil is, I’m thinking we need Morris Claiborne. Descent offensive linemen can be found or developed. But acquiring top-notch cornerbacks & safeties isn’t exactly an easy feat. I can’t believe that an offensive lineman and a wide receiver takes precedence over a high-caliber cornerback. Offensive lineman isn’t the most needed spot(even though there are so many holes in the whole infrastructure of the team. Deciding which position is worthy of addressing with the 3rd overall pick isn’t that difficult to figure out. TAKE THE “HONEYBEAR” MORRIS CLAIBORNE!!!!!
