Meeting Matt Kalil: PA Summarizes First Day At Combine

Posted by Mike Wobschall on February 23, 2012 – 9:34 pm

Day 1 of the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine couldn’t have gone much better for vikings.com and KFAN. Keep in mind, there is no on-field activity until Saturday. But that’s actually the biggest reason why Thursday was so bountiful in interesting conversation and information gathering.

I joined Voice of the Vikings Radio Network Paul Allen as a co-host of his 9-noon radio show on KFAN and we had rock star/Combine relevant guests all morning. From ESPN’s Chris Mortensen and former Vikings Head Coach Brad Childress right off the bat, to NFL Network reporter Jason La Canfora, Detroit Lions Head Coach Jim Schwartz and Vikings VP Rick Spielman later in the show, Thursday’s action was non-stop. We even found some extra time to tape interviews for tomorrow’s show, so be sure to check it out because we had a solid conversation with former Vikings QB and NFL MVP Rich Gannon.

Also tomorrow, we should have NFL Network and Vikings preseason TV analyst Mike Mayock, Dallas Morning News Columnist Rick “Goose” Gosselin, NFL Network and CBS analyst Charley Casserly and Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier as guest, plus several more that will materialize as the show goes on.

For a cool recap of what kinds of things transpire at the Combine, check out PA’s summary of Day 1 on his show page by clicking here.

If you didn’t listen to the show and/or you didn’t follow our coverage on vikings.com during Thursday, I suggest you do so on Friday. There is so much information flowing, and there is so much energy. The 3-13 season is behind us, a new season has begun, and there is so much to discuss. I can’t wait for Friday and the rest of the Combine.

Did you know the last time we’ve won a Sunday/Monday night game was Week 4…of the 09 season, at home vs the Packers!

Why does this team not perform during Primetime games?!? And why have we only had ONE Primetime game inside the dome dating back to the 09 season??

Because we get blown out every time we have a prime time game!!!!

Most teams around the league save their best football for these Night games. Meanwhile this team shows their absolute worst !!

    Saying it again…

3rd Overall Pick- OT Matt Kalil
The solution to our poor LT play. If Kalil is taken by the rams who i expect to trade back with a team that wants RGIII then we take Justin Blackmon or Riley Reiff. Either way I feel our LT problem should be solved in the 1st round and no where else.
35th Overall Pick- CB Chase Minnifield
I previously had Kelechi Osemele and Vontaze Burfict here. The consensus on this site is that OLine and Secondary are the 2 biggest needs this offseason. This pick could be used to take players of other positions but Minnifeild does more than just fill a need for us. He is without question the best zone coverage corner in this draft. So he is a player that fills a need and fits our defensive scheme.
67th Overall Pick- CB Stephon Gilmore
I previously had Trumaine Johnson here. After comparing the two there were two factors to me that gave Gilmore an edge over Johnson. First, Gilmore’s ability to tackle and be physical with opposing wideouts, where Johnson would shy away from contact and did not make an impact in the run game. Second, Gilmore is better suited in a Cover 2 defense. Johnson saw a lot more man-to-man in college.
With Chris Cook’s future with the Vikes in question and an aging Antione Winfield who could be cut because of his high salary, cornerback is a position that needs to be addressed in the draft. Even if Cook and Winfield stay with the Vikings, having 4 guys that can actually play zone defense would be huge. Especially in a division that features the high scoring passing games of the Packers and Lions. Having a replacement for Winfield allows him to mentor these young CBs and allows the team to focus on other positions in the future

    @GDP
Stephon Gilmore won’t be available in the 3rd round, if you want him you will have to take him in the 2nd round!! Do we want to take another chance on a VA. corner, considering what happen with Chris Cook!!! I live in SC and had the chance to watch both guys play and I like Gilmore over Minnifield, because he is more physical and a better tackler!! We need physical CB’s here in Minnesota, the corners we have now play off the ball to much!!!!

Frazier just said it: no pro-bowl corner can be found in later rounds. True, every year the best CB’s go hard and fast in round 1-2 and we never can get one.

Looks like a sure bet for CB in round 2 right now

Why is Spence unaware we only have 9 wins and 23 loses since 09 ?

Seems we dont just struggle in primetime games it seems we struggle in every game yet Spence keeps repeating the same clueless question over and over and over …

LT Kalil 1st round. Draft corners Gilmore R2 and Norman R3. Both have good size and are physical. The Vikings need Corners who can TACKLE. Norman is more of a Ball Hawk while Gilmore could be the next Winfield.

  19. By Rogerthevikefan on Feb 24, 2012 | Reply

Gilmore is 6’1 and Norman is 6’0 that would give the secondary some much needed size. The only knock on Gilmore is he will make 1 great play but follow is with a couple below average to awful plays. That can be fixed with coaching. Norman was the star of the East-West Shrine practices.

Kalil is a no brainer at #3, even Spielman can’t (hopefully) F%&! this up. I like the CBs in rd #2/3 if they’re available.

How many prime time games do you experts think a 3-13 team should get?? I’m sure if we had a Monday night game vs the Rams the ratings would be huge!! Come on!!!!

Mid to late round CB Josh Robinson from UCF. He has about 10 career INTs and a bunch of PDs. He held AJ Green to 77 yards in UCF win over Georgia in bowl game.
