have the Vikings officially sign that DB coach from the colts, as the defensive coordinator yet? Also, what is the status on the Stadium bill?

Great another TE is that the best the Vikings could do. I can tell what our draft is going to be like, we might draft another TE again. This team is just confused no wonder why no defensive coordinators want to coach our team its the peoples in charge that’s breaking out team apart. Why do we want the colts DB coach the colts defense stink especially the secondary and the stupid tampa 2 scheme is not working for us Frazier so stop being stupid and change up this league is not the same as it was when you was playing so stop crippling our team.

Jose Valdez out of Arkansas and has been on the Falcons practice squad. The only playing time last year was preseason. Not an exciting move.

Im getting tired of the Tampa 2 also….why can we just land a big name DC???? You would think they would want the job…..they’ll be the first one offered an interim head coaching position if things got bad…

This is obviously a make or break season for Frazier and co. if the Vikes don’t go at least 8-8 I think they will fire Frazier and start from scratch with a big name coach. The stadium issue will be resolved one way or another, so there shouldn’t be any reservations about a top notch HC coming to Minny. We shall see…

Shuler, Resiner and now Hardy TE’s. The good news is that we shouldn’t have to pick a TE anywhere in the draft including UDFA. Focus on Needs!!!!!!!!

I am not sure but I think Shuler is on the FA list this year

What are we gonna do with Va$hittte Shianco? If we keep him than he dam well better not cry for top dollar because Rudolph is gonna be our #1 next year. I wouldnt mind him staying on the team, as long as he realizes hes the #2 option at tight-end.

  16. By Mike B. on Jan 18, 2012 | Reply

I don’t see shank staying with the team he’s going to want a big contract. I see a possible youth movement this year. Many Vets may not be on the team that are due to be resigned.

Winfield needs to restructure his deal. Hes not worth 7.2mil a year to be a nickle corner that doesnt even play a full season. Longwell doesnt deserve to be making 3mil a year after that pathetic season. He cant even kick the ball into the endzone.

There is one free agent I hope the Vikings stay a long away from…Heard this guy was going to get his name changed to Bernard Berrian II…His current name is DeShaun Jackson…That guy has been nothing but a contract cancer to the Eagles all year long…He has attitude…And was playing scared last season…I saw him alligator arm some big plays he could have caught last season…D Jackson is going to shut it down after landing his big money…Eagles were smart to try and make him earn it…He has showed his true colors now…Hope the Vikings stay far away from that dude…

There is one storyline out there this off season that might interest Viking fans on how it all turns out…Brees,Colston, and Carl Nicks are all free agents this year…Saints can only franchise tag one…And most likely can only sign 2 of the 3 to contracts and stay under the cap…And or be able to sign any other players…You can bet one way or another Brees is not going anywhere…But Colston has said quite awhile ago…He has no intentions on giving the Saints a hometown discount for his contract…So if either Colston or Nicks hits the open market…Vikings might be interested in either one…

There should be quite a few decent WR’s in FA to look at stretching the field to make the offense effective.

I believe Remi signed a 3 year deal when he came to the Vikings. I agree he is not good. One thing about player’s contracts they are not guaranteed. There is a point in every contract during the year where the team can let him go. I figure that is what they will do with Remi.

  51. By Mike B. on Jan 18, 2012 | Reply

@OT what makes you think they will mix in 3-4. Frazier is putting his friends in so that he can keep the 4-3 and tampa 2. The problem is we don’t have talent in the secondary so the tampa 2 went flat. This was due to injuries and just poor talent pool.

If we end next season with more losses then wins I for one will want Frazier and Spielman out of here immediately. And if Ponder gets the start due to favoritism and don’t perform good he along with the folks in charge who supported reaching for him should get shown the door to. I’m tired of being on the losing side its time for the Vikingsto stop being a door mat and start competing.

  53. By OTKalil2012 on Jan 18, 2012 | Reply

I probably look at the Vikings trying to do more in the draft at getting more pressure from the defense up the middle next season…Vikes need a big ugly NT next to Williams…There will be 3 very good NT position players late in the first round to early half of the second round…Vikes need an elite LB presence also…Will Brinkley coming back fill that role…He is a good run stuffer…But would like to see a LB with a good pass rushing talent also…Vikes looked horrible getting pressure up the middle…That has to change…Vikes need plenty of help…Nothing will surprise me who Spielman might covet in this draft…

  55. By OTKalil2012 on Jan 18, 2012 | Reply

Mike B…Don’t look for a big change to a 3-4 defense…I am talking about a few more trick plays now and then…Similar to what the offense used in the “blazer package”…Remember Allen even dropped back a few times once and awhile into pass coverage last season…Those plays were put in by design…Just enough change to mix things up now and then…Fresh legs taking advantage of Griffen and Ballards speed once in a blue moon…Especially late in games…

Vikings should look into 6′ ft. CB Josh Norman Coastal Carolina 3rd or 4th rounder. He has been dominating at the East-West Shrine game practices all week. Also Baylor DT Nick Jean-Baptise(not sure if it is spelt right) he is a big run stuffer and likley a 5th round pick. For all who are wondering the GREATEST COACH OF ALL-TIME BRAD”CHILLI-DOG”CHILDRESS is coaching one of the teams. Still can’t figure out how he gets work.

  97. By Rogerthevikefan on Jan 19, 2012 | Reply

There is also DT Hakim Hicks (not sure of the school somewhere in Canada) he has been showing the ability to stuff the run and is likely a mid-round pick. I believe the East-West Shrine game is on Saturday likely on NFL Network not sure when it starts.

A cheap FA LT would be D. Bell from the Bills when healthy he is solid but he has had knee problems could be good compettion with what ever rookie LT the Vikes take Kalil or Rieff. Personally I like Rieff because he is technically sound while Kalil is great at pass blocking but so-so run blocking. Bring in FA CB Brandon Carr from the Chiefs he has good size 6′ ft. and would bring something are corners lack SKILL.

  99. By Rogerthevikefan on Jan 19, 2012 | Reply

Just think a CB core of Carr, Norman, Cook(if he is not someone girlfriend), Burton, and Sherels. Winfield could move to S. While Griffin and Allen can go let Pre-Schoolers burn them on go routes. I liked Griffin but his knees are shot.

The only way the Vikes should take a WR early in the draft is if M. Floyd drops into the 2nd round or they trade back and get a extra 2nd plus whatever they could swing.

I am predicting that the Hederson will not resign with the Vikes but will move on to the Saints or the Bucs. Shank will go back to NY but as a Jet. Remi will be selling his fashion line on street corners. Hutch may be traded or let go too high a contract with his injuries adding up. Herrera will be a bench warmer for the Seachickens. Aromashodu and Camarillo will fight for the last WR spot on the Vikes. Packer fans will realize Aaron Rodgers is a SYSTEM QB.

This is an article that lays out the plan for the new defensive coaching lineup. Apparantly, Frazier intends to keep Pagac on board as the team’s SECOND linebackers coach, where he and Singletary will work together with the group.

The article did list some reasonable highlights of the Colt’s coach who is being offered the DC job:
“Among the top highlights on Williams’ Indianapolis résumé is a 2008 season in which the Colts allowed only six touchdown pässes in 16 games. During Williams’ 10 seasons in Indianapolis, the Colts finished in the top six of the NFL in passing defense five times.

I’m not sure how well this will work, but supposedly Tony Dungy had recommended this guy as a defensive coordinator in the past, so he must have some qualifications. Hopefully it all works out.

the way I see it is that Williams cant do any worse than what the secondary has done for the past 5 years.. the d line is good enough and LB’S are solid too… if he can keep those guys playing hard and get some secondary play we will be good… but what is going to happen on Offense, thats the question

CB’S – Burton , Cook and Carr are solid at the position while we have S’s Mistral Raymond (who I like alot) and move Winfield to the oppisite side … we could be descent.. also look at that Norman kid at CB… but I think we need alot of offense in the draft….

Please tell me why – people are still bashing Chilli. He had one bad season and he got fired. Please tell me what Frasier has done since been coach. Ok he messed up with the Moss issue but since he was here he made us a winning team. There are not many teams that are always great (apart from Pats). Teams need to rebuild and that what need to happen with Chilli.

It appears to me that Frazier intends to keep his hands on the defense. Hopefully they will find enough talent coming back to be a good unit. The Defensive unit has the most FAs and players that are unsettled. You add in the issues with the OL and a WR need. Will the team be competitive next season with the current coaching. I have doubts that they can find or retain enough talent to become 8-8 team. Just my 2 cents.

    Jose Valdez:

Strengths: Adequate size for either tackle spot, and swings between both spots. Has a good punch which knocks back even larger defensive ends. Feet are quick enough to pull or cut off backside defensive end. Plays with a wide base after initial hit in pass protection. Anchor is strong, even against 300-pound players. Has the length to punch the inside man and recover to push outside rusher around the pocket. Weaknesses: A bit top-heavy in his build; wide in the middle with relatively thin legs. Must move quicker off the snap to handle faster NFL defensive ends. Plays too tall and will get bull-rushed by ends effectively using leverage. Needs to improve his flexibility, knee bend and balance in pass protection. Will miss targets in space due to his lack of balance.

Valdez…Biggest point of interest with the big OT…Musgrave got the chance to watch Valdez on the Falcons pratice squad for 3 yrs while being their offensive coordinator…Valdez has trouble in space…But might work well at a guard position…Which it sounds like both guard positons might be open for the Vikings next season…Valdez can be competition for Fusco and Love in the off season…YOUNG offensive line talent…You can bet Spielman was asking Musgrave a little info on Valdez…And must have liked what he heard…

Great plan, Ben. Let’s take ANOTHER WR and ignore the problems on the O-line and the secondary. That way, we can suck next year too. Then next year we can take ANOTHER WR and a new QB because ours can’t do the job with a broken hip, and ignore the problems again, so we can suck THAT year too. Then the next year, we can draft MORE WRs and QBs because we sucked the year prior, blah blah blah…… you get the point.

We could go into next season with EVERY WR that is going to the Pro-Bowl this year, and we’d still finish up 3-13 if we don’t fix the O-line and the secondary.

FIX THE PROBLEMS, and the “good” areas will get much better.

I really want to see if the Vikings pick up a few big name free agents. I would LOVE guard Carl Nicks or WR Colston from the Saints. The problem is what happens if we pick up Colston and the Rams take Kalil at #2 this draft?

I would like to see the Vikings either take Kalil or Blackmon, depending on who the Rams take, we take the next best player available and fill a huge need with either a LT or a #1 WR. If the Rams take Kalil, are the Vikings going to take Blackmon if they pick up Colston?

I wouldn’t mind if we sign Carl Nick and the Rams take Blackmon and the Vikings select Kalil. Kalil – Hutch – Sullivan – Nicks – ?Johnson? Wouldn’t this be a HUGE improvement for our OL?

  126. By Mike B. on Jan 19, 2012 | Reply

@NorthwoodsVikesFan We need to get a WR that other teams will respect that we will go down field. There isn’t a single WR on the current roster that fills that need. We have a great slot WR and a good #3 WR in Jenkins (Posession type). Aromashodu and Camrillo are FA and are expendible. It is not a stretch to get Blackmon and get an FA OT. This is a rebuilding year and I suspect most of the FA Vets will go unsigned and allowed to find other teams.

  127. By Rudso on Jan 19, 2012 | Reply

    Now on our TE position…

I would like to see Shanqu back for 1 more year but not for a lot of money. He is one of our vets and is mostly reliable, the only thing I don’t like is he gets A LOT of penalties called on him, shouldn’t happen with his experience.

I LOVE RUDOLPH! I was very upset that the Vikings didn’t use him enough but he was a rookie and #3 on the list after Shanque and Mr. Sauce. Expect to see Rudolph #2 if not #1 next season and be a Pro-Bowl TE for years to come. I actually believe that Rudolph is going to be a better player at his position than Ponder will, I hope I’m wrong.

  128. By NorthwoodsVikesFan on Jan 19, 2012 | Reply

None of our WRs could get downfield in the 1.5 seconds before Ponder was sacked. No WR can get downfield in 1.5 seconds. Several of our WRs have the speed to do it, they just don’t have the time.

If we sign new WRs, it should be NFL proven ones through FA, not unproven ones in the draft.

  129. By Beau on Jan 19, 2012 | Reply

The biggest thing the vikings need is offensive weapons. You all watched the games the only thing Ponder has to tho to is Harvin. Jenkins was good until he got hurt and Rudolf did good. The vikings need WR’s and they also need DB’S

  135. By Mike B. on Jan 19, 2012 | Reply

I disagree is it is easier and cheaper to get OL in FA than a WR esp a great one you end up in a bidding war. I am not sure how each player matches up in his position and ranked against the others. But I could see us taking a WR in first round. take the very best player at the spot you have in the draft with the need that can be filled and we have a ton of them. I would be happier with a WR, but OT or top CB is still good.

  153. By Parody on Jan 19, 2012 | Reply

In regard to the new hires, they may not be as bad as the teams they came from would lead you to believe. Williams has led the DBs in Indianapolis, and had his men in the top-10 of fewest passing yards allowed something to the tune of 6 years out of the 10 he coached there. That’s pretty good for a team that liked only spent money on their QB. I think I recall reading that one year Williams’ team even held opposing offenses to fewer than 16 passing TDs in a full 16-game season.

The guy could be a lot like Dunbar. where he was able to be the only consistantly competent coach on the team. Dunbar’s group (DL) did great, but couldn’t compensate for the weaknesses on the rest of the team. So I’m hoping that Williams’ success can translate to our own DBs, and across the entire defense as our new DC.

  154. By NorthwoodsVikesFan on Jan 19, 2012 | Reply

We scored a fair amount of points with our cruddy O-line as it was. Enough to win the game if our secondary could have held the opposing team to one less TD, or if our O-line could have protected our QB for a couple more seconds to let routes develop and hit the receiver.

Shore up the line, plug the holes in the secondary, and do nothing else, and we’re going places. Fix those 2 problem areas first, and THEN pick up a marquee player or 2, fine, but don’t you think our “better performers” deserve a chance to show they are “great performers” with a stronger supporting cast?

  155. By Spence on Jan 19, 2012 | Reply

Coaching isnt so much the problem, its the Players! Once again, 5 secondary players were on I.R!

  156. By Parody on Jan 19, 2012 | Reply

Titus – I don’t think it is a right or wrong situation. It’s a matter of perspective. Any given Sunday…as the saying goes…any team can win against any other. My perspective is that Northwoods’ argument is valid and preferrable. As a kid, I used to love watching the high scoring offense, and never gave any consideration to the value of a defense. As I grew to understand and appreciate the game more, I believe that a solid defense is more important than a flashy offense. You need good players on both sides of the ball, but in today’s NFL, if I were to put more concentration on one side, it would be the defense.

Not so sure, Parody. I would go for balance and team chemistry. The best D in the world will not hold up if they keep returning to the field because the O consistently goes 3 and out. We saw that a few times in 2010– I recall the Jets game in particular. Or the year before– our D was awesome in stopping the Eagles over and over in the playoff game at the dome– but eventually, they wore down because our offense would not do anything.

They just need protection to add production. More stars on the offense though will not make a noticable difference.

You need balance, but if you’re going to set your focus on more heavily on one side of the ball, get a defense good enough to allow an average offense to do just enough to win the game.

Our secondary has been Swiss Cheese for well over a decade, with a few anomolies that didn’t do anything for us. This organization obviously hasn’t placed much importance on a strong defense, and look what it’s gotten us. Close, a couple of times.

We’ve done the “score a bunch of points” thing and it hasn’t won us a title. Let’s try the “score some points, but prevent the other team from scoring more than we do” thing and see how it goes.

Old veteran QBs like Manning, (or Favre and Cunningham when they became Vikings) are good for teams that have plenty of talent around the field, and need a general to complete them for a shot at the title. As we saw with Favre (year 2) and McNabb, they’re useless when you don’t have a team for them to lead.

Vikefanforlife – It looks like he’d be a solid addition if we choose not to re-sign E.J. He came off his best year in 2011, and at 28 years old, he could have a good 5-years of solid production left in him.

Some questions about it though, is he a free agent, and is he seriously considering finding a new team?

  223. By Titus on Jan 19, 2012 | Reply

Spence, I think that article sums up most of our views on the Peyton idea. Makes no sense at all. We have two very capable QBs that are developing– they need an O line so they can reach their full potential. Now if Tom Brady wanted to come over, well, I would have to pause and think.

*Actually, it looks like he was most recently with the Browns: http://www.nfl.com/player/d'qwelljackson/2506889/careerstats

One area for concern is that he didn’t play any games in 2010, and only played in 6-games in 2009, (16 in 2011 and 2008). So I would guess that there are some serious injury concerns to consider.

Inherits a losing team with no immediate expectations (job security), gets to bring in all of his own new assistant coaches (nepotism at it’s best), win 4 lousy games his first year (be given a raise for improvement), have owners who don’t have a clue (no micromanaging like Jerry Jones),probably have a new state of the art stadium (ideal working conditions), a new GM (who also doesn’t have a clue, so no meddling), guaranteed top draft pick for the first several years (can focus on rebuilding instead of believing they only have to “retool”)…..oh yes, to be the next vikings head coach, sweet!!!

I don’t think just one OL will fix the line. I think one WR could fix the reciever core. Kalil will not fix the problems at OL by himself. It’s going to take 2 or 3 guys on the line to fix that issue. FA can help there. Top Notch WRs in FA are very expensive as we saw with Rice. We can draft a top notch WR at rookie prices this year. I think it is more cost effective to fix the line with lower draft picks and FA. We will still need to restructure Hutch’s contract so he can retire a viking and pay him to his playing abilities.as he is getting older.

I don’t think playing on the road affects the Giants much. Tough to call.

Ravens are a staunch defense and in my gut I want to say Ravens. But if Flacco and Co. could barely outscore the Texans at home, well, I doubt they will score enough against Brady and Co.

If we agreed on everything, one of us would not be needed.

I would estimate that any vote between Webb and Ponder would be close right now. Ponder would probably have an edge 60-40, or something like that.

But a lot of people feel that neither is the answer at QB.

I say that has not been proven, and that it’s ALSO RISKY to keep paying for new quarterbacks every year. Give these guys a chance with a good supporting cast!!!

What it all boils down to is that every one of us simply wants a winning season, ending with our team’s name carved into the Lombardi. IF that could be accomplished by drafting more WRs, more QBs, and the best waterboy in the business, then I’m all for it, draft away. 44 years of disappointment kind of wears on a guy. But, 44 years of watching NFL football, and 4 years of playing HS football tell me that that strategy isn’t going to help us until we fix what is WRONG with the team.

Remember that they often win or lose games.

Getting good defensive backs, and offensive linemen should help out our special teams. These are people who will do it without fanfare. They are all about TEAM!!!

  346. By NorthwoodsVikesFan on Jan 19, 2012 | Reply

It’s a point that SHOULD be well known, but historically, not one that the Vikings have paid much attention to. Our secondary has been badly neglected for over a decade, in favor of building a high-scoring offense. The only thing that I’m not sure of is what the crux of the problem is – talent or coaching???? Would we be better off utilizing a different scheme? The Niners showed us this year what a coaching change can do for (essentially) the same team. TJack showed us what a better O-line can do for an average QB.

If I play WR, I can do better if the QB has TIME to hit me with a pass.
I could be open all day, but if the QB doesn’t have TIME to locate me, then nothing happens.

What good is it to have a great coaching staff? Aren’t they wasted on lousy players?

If I am a LB, but I can’t rush the passer because I’m stuck covering a WR, then what?

Would it help to get a great LB or two?
Would a great run stuffing DT help the Vikings?

You can easily answer yes to these questions.

Yet aren’t you putting the CART BEFORE THE HORSE???

A 555 pound QB with OLs that weigh 97 pounds will not work!
    It just won’t.

A DT that can stop the run would be nice, but if the DBs allow ANYTHING to be caught like this year, then it does not matter.

@Fred but still I was right about Ponder reguardless of what others think. Also I am thinking unless Washington wants to trade up Kalil will be off the board. That will mean that there is no top notch OT availible. That will leave Blackmon availible.
    #1 Luck Colts
    #2 Kalil Rams
    #3 Blackmon Vikings
    #4 RG3 Browns.
Whoppie we got Spielman as a GM. This only means that the Wilfs were not looking to spill over the apple cart when they are focusing on the Stadium issue. He has no control over the coaching staff just personel that Frazier will use. Did we get better? I don’t think so. Now Frazier adds more of his buddies in the Defense. We will see what happens. Most I have talked too don’t have confidence we will be much better than this last season.

A great defensive line can make your defensive backfield look great as well!! We have one great DE in JA, but the rest are average to say the least!! Now, I’m behind you 100%, in that our focus needs to be DB’s, but we also need to beef up the middle with a NT and we need to draft a MLB for the future!! I would like to see us move Everson Griffen to LB and use him like Green Bay uses Matthews, he’s got the speed to do that!! The front seven of your defense can cause the most trouble for an offense, just look at the Giants as a team and you can see that!! Only the Ravens and the 49ers have a well rounded defense, where there DB’s are just as strong as there front seven!!!

Don’t be surprised if the Vikes make a trade at the 3 spot, because there’s a lot of teams who want RG3 and maybe willing to trade!! Cleveland, Washington and Miami maybe calling the Vikes on draft day and it could turn into a bidding war for RG3 which will benefit there draft this year and next year!! I would even go as far as drafting RG3, then telling the team your working a trade with to draft the guy we want, throw in quite a few picks and even get a veteran player out of the deal!! Miami maybe to far of a drop to the 9th pick, to do anything with them!!

@61vikings Cleveland has no reason to trade up for a QB as they know that Luck is gone #1 and Rams and Vikings are looking to fill a QB spot. Will Washington or Miami want to give up a second round pick for #2 or #3 I am not so sure. The Value of #2 and #3 drops way off after Luck is picked.

  373. By Mike B. on Jan 20, 2012 | Reply

I think that Spielman will want to make a big pick in the first round, so he will want one of the top 5 picks in the draft. I don’t see them trading down beyond Pick #4 as we already have 10 picks in the draft. He is going to want to make a big statement with his new position. The Vikings will take one of the top 5 players in the draft. You eliminate QBs then the choices are pretty clear and needs that the team needs.

Daly is a former assistant Vikings coach from 06-08′. You can’t base that St Louis record perception on just a DL coach from the team. We currently have 8 picks in the draft not 10. Yes I agree Spielman would rather make a splash with the first pick but he will not turn down extra draft picks to better the team

Look what happened to them in ’11 – #32 in giving up passing yards, #27 in giving up TDs. Quite the turnaround in defense, quite a different end to the season.

You can weasel through the regular season with a poor D by scoring a ton of points, but when faced with a higher level of competition in the post-season, you better bring D.

  382. By Gary on Jan 20, 2012 | Reply

Too bad Frazier didn’t have the GUTS to even talk to a guy like Spags to be DC. Guess when you are worried about keeping your own job, you don’t have much self confidence, you don’t have confidence in your team’s ability to turn things around and become successful in the short term, you are not about to bring in a proven and successful performing coach as DC – who could also be viewed as a potential replacement and would instead feel comfortable and secure in your job by bringing in a coach with whom you have had a past working familiarty who had never before been a DC or Head Coach and would , as such, not be viewed as a potential replacement as Head Coach. Being a Head Coach is all about leadership and building a cohesive unit. You have to make choices, sometimes those are hard choices. The ability to make those choices in the best interest of THE TEAM and the quality and success of those choices determines the success of the team and as a result the success of the Head Coach. Unfortunately, the decision making that is being seen from Frazier thus far indicates he will not be a success in his first foray into Head Coaching and may well be someone who tops out as a NFL DC.

The saga continues… It seems that any decision the Vikings organization makes is not good enough for anyone (including myself many times) So, I am going to start anew and quit my whining. Listening to Fred Viking-ology, Titus, Mike B and Rocksalt (and many others- just too many to mention) the past year has gotten me to change some thinking. I have heard the banter and really appreciate the knowledge shared here as you all know your stuff- unlike me who does not have the time to get all of the stats and be in the know on every little detail- so thank you for that. So, here is my game plan: we got a GM, we got 2 QB’s that are smart. We know what our needs are (O-line, secondary and a few go-to people with good hands) We just need the coaches to step up and prove to us fans that THEY have the right plan and that the draft is going to be the what tells us fans if they are for real or going to make the same blunders. I can’t wait to see how it shakes out. AND if it all falls into the toilet, then we can all go back to the great banter! At least Green Bay is done. No better start to 2012 than that! Looking over recent past history on our draft – I predict a Skill Position Offensive player will be taken in the first round. It was a sweet algorithm that I invested much effort and time into……not really.

I feel like the Vikings are becoming more like the Twins everyday, bring in unknown’s and try to make them known. Home cooking is a good strategy, it just takes a long time.

The more I hear from Jim Irsay the more I want to slap him – I think he has perpetuated this whole draft pick thing into getting more press time for himself.

Ponder will be fine in this League – he is not a Mistake. I chalk this year up to a lot of things – mostly a rookie Coaching Staff – a rookie QB – an offseason that was mostly non-existant – and some personnel decisions that were a little questionable ( McNabb – McKinnie – Berrian – P. Williams ) I saw the caoching staff grow this season and I hope to see more of that in the offseason. The next two years will be what tells us where we are at and where we are going. We just slipped and fell at the starting gun this year and never got beck into a groove from there.

It would be awesome I agree to line up with Peterson – Harvin and Blackmon – Fun stuff no doubt. The Riverboat gambler would go Blackmon and the big pay day – the Casino would bet on Kalil though, everytime. I still think they pull the trigger on Blackmon and hope to get another Tackle in the second round – They like the skill positiion players with high 1st round picks for sure.

Well Ryan Leaf was a total nut – I don’t think Ponder is that guy. For the record I Pondered the pick last year, just because I thought they should have gone OL with the pick. But I saw potential in Ponder as the year went on. If the Ponder pick is any indication at all, there is no telling who we will pick this year. No one saw the Ponder pick coming last year, no experts, not Ponder, no one – not even Swami Titus!!

The draft isn’t set in stone – plans change, and as other teams change their pick, your pick may have to change. That’s the way it is. If you’re forced to change your pick, that doesn’t make your pick a mistake.

Hire another short term older QB and the fanbase will really go south. I have heard that all across SDak that they are tired of personel bringing in older washed up QBs. It’s more than time start grooming a QB of the future. It’s Ponder’s time to become that future QB.

  438. By TITUS THE GREAT PREDICTOR on Jan 20, 2012 | Reply

Tebow and the Broncos are going to be very good this upcoming season. Ponder is absolutely the better choice for quarterback, but he seems injury prone. Webb may develop later on– he has the physical skills and a good personality, but he needs more mental preparation. Culpepper never impressed me– he was very much like McNabb– good numbers, could manage turnovers, but when the game was on the line and it was playoff time, he could not produce. Cunningham was one of the best to ever play. Peyton will decide ending his career in a wheelchair at this stage of his success is not worth it and will call it quits before the season or midway after an initial hit that sidelines him.

“More Athletic”- Means Nothing. Brady. Peyton. Eli. Rivers. etc..
“Can roll out of the pocket”- Ponder did that plenty of times.
“Keeps the chains rolling”- How many 1st downs did he get vs the Bears?
“He makes our offense way more eletric than Ponder”- Where was the electricity vs the Bears?”

  477. By Viking33 on Jan 20, 2012 | Reply

I think he will be there – I think someone trades the Rams for the 2nd pick and takes RG3, leaving us with Kalil. That is my hope anyways, and that is why I thought it was such a blunder to tell Ponder that we were not going to draft a QB and in turn he tells the world that too. I hope they didn’t ruin their chances by doing that, I will never understand why we always do things like that. But, I think Fisher would welcome more picks with a new team, I know I would.

  478. By NorthwoodsVikesFan on Jan 20, 2012 | Reply

Born, you either don’t read for comprehension, or you’ve got the shortest memory on record.

You can’t throw many TDs when you’re a) flat on your back, b) running for your life, and c) your receivers haven’t had enough time to get open because you need to throw the ball a second after it’s snapped (see a and b). Our QBs have such a pathetic record because we have such a pathetic front line, and such a pathetic secondary that we can’t win.

Our season was not the fault of the QB position. You give either Ponder or Webb 4 seconds in the pocket, we got wins. You improve the secondary enough to stop the opposition from scoring just 1 extra TD per game, we would have been 13-3.

Throw Payton Manning into our lineup without making any changes, we’re STILL a 3-13 team. And then we have to find a new veteran QB 2 years from now when he’s either shamed from the NFL, or recovering nicely in some comfortable hospital room.

OR, maybe we could develop a young promising QB, give him a solid line for protection, and run off 8-10 successful years like GB (Favre and now Rodgers), NO (Brees), NE (Brady), Denver (Elway), Pittsburgh (Big Ben).

    It can happen.

I find it hard to believe that Flynn will go anywhere but Miami now. The Dolphins need a QB, and would have to make a big trade offer to get a shot at RG3. I read articles a week or so ago that made the same conjecture.

Flynn did more in Green Bay this year than Jackson did here in his entire career. You all saw how well that worked out for Jackson once his OC found a new team. I’m certain it will work out even better for Flynn.

It seems like a win-win situation. Flynn gets to start for a team (who I think need a QB) and the Packers will probably get more players or draft picks to keep stacking the deck in their favor in the division

  522. By Parody on Jan 20, 2012 | Reply

Mike R – Flynn is a free agent this year. He’s likely to become a starter in Miami right away, so the Packers are likely to get a compensatory draft pick in 2013, but nothing more.

Winfield is not the best Cover Corner on the team. Chris Cook has shown us that he can guard the Fitz’s and Megatrons of the world. Winfield cant. I also disagree with moving E.Griffen to D-Tackle. Thats gonna be Ballards spot..

  531. By BornVike4life on Jan 20, 2012 | Reply

HMM Cook will be lucky if he is even on the team next year??? He is a good player i agree but he is another pacman here today gone tomorrow.. Griffen is great he can play every where but what do you suggest Spence?? Take out Robison for him?? NO.. Take out Erin Henderson? possibly? Personally we may be better suited in a 3-4 at this point!! Ballard is medium at best, Remi is ok, but greenway would really flourish in a 3-4 coming off Jared Allen’s side.. I’m not opposed to a D switch! The league is starting to turn into a TE league.. Or 2.. So the switch really isn’t out of the question. As far as stopping the run, we may never be as good as we were for that long and no Pat in the middle really hurt, it showed this year..

Do you know what a 3-4 consists of?? 2 DE’s and a DT….. We would just need another good MLB next to EJ or put Erin next to him and have Griffen rush off the edge of Robison…. I think it would work —– only IF we address that horrid safety spot…. CMON Laron Landry!!! He’s a free agent……. SIGN HIM UP

  540. By Spence on Jan 20, 2012 | Reply

I meant the D-ends in a 4-3 go to OLB in a 3-4. Mario Williams was a DE, now hes OLB because the Texans switched to a 3-4.

    3–4 defense
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    (Redirected from 3-4 defense)
In American football, the 3–4 defense is a defensive alignment consisting of three down linemen and four linebackers.
“ In general, ideal front-seven players in the 3–4 are bigger and need to take on and defeat blocks more often in the running game. ”
    —Albert Breer, The Sporting News.[1]

    3–4 base defense
The 3–4 defense declined in popularity over the years, but has found renewed use by modern professional and college football teams. The 3–4 defense is so named because it involves 3 down linemen and 4 linebackers. There are usually 4 defensive backs.

he defensive line is made up of a nose tackle (NT) and two defensive ends (DEs). Linemen in 3–4 schemes tend to be larger than their 4–3 counterparts to take up more space and guard more territory along the defensive front. 3–4 defensive ends were usually defensive tackles when entering at first. They must be strong at the point of attack and are aligned in most cases head-up on an offensive tackle. First and foremost, they must control run gaps. Size and strength become more of a factor for linemen in 3–4 defenses than in 4–3 defenses because they move primarily within the confines of line play and seldom are in space using athletic ability. Ideally 3–4 DEs should weigh 285–300 pounds (129–140 kg) and be able to beat double teams by getting a push.[8] The 3–4 nose tackle is considered the most physically demanding position in football.[9] His primary responsibility is to control the “A” gaps, the two openings between the center and guards, and not get pushed back into his linebackers. If a running play comes through one of those gaps, he must make the tackle or control what is called the “jump-through”—the guard or center who is trying to get out to the linebackers. The ideal nose tackle has to be much bigger than 4–3 DTs, weighing around 330 pounds or more. Ted Washington is considered the prototypical nose tackle of this era. “In his prime, Ted Washington was the ideal guy,” says an AFC pro personnel director. “He was huge, had long arms, and you couldn’t budge him. He could hold off a 320-pound lineman with one hand and make the tackle with the other.”[9] Since most college teams run a 4–3 defense, most college DTs are more of a 4–3 tackle than a true nose tackle, which makes good 3–4 NTs hard to find.[9]
The base position of NT is across from the opposing team’s center. This location is usually referred to as zero technique. The two DEs flank the NT and line up off the offensive guards. The location off the offensive guard is usually referred to as three technique.

If you implied that being white hindered his chances of being successful rather than opportunities, skills, development, supporting cast members, etc, then yes, it would be racist. Spence, you are looking at a skin color and a culturally made-up creation of race to differentiate one HUMAN BEING from another HUMAN BEING.
Why are you even mentioning the skin color? Why? Spence, I have no tolerance for your thinking, sir.

What we have to hope is that somehow Spielman can be convinced to FILL OUR NEEDS IN THE DRAFT, FREE AGENCY, AND TRADES.

Currently he seems bent on picking the best athlete. I would not be at all surprised if he picked an RB in the first round, and that RB would get over 1000 yards. Spielman would then call his idiot-self a success.

Unfortunate, but that is the mentallity we are dealing with here.

GM- I am with you — being outside is part of the experience and makes the fan brave the elements to at least be a part of the game in that it is not so passive. Sitting in a big climate-controlled dome serves what purpose? You might as well stay on your couch at home where the food is better, parking is easy, no line for the toilet, and you can stretch out. Something special about being in the snow outdoors with the sky above– and it gives a nice advantage over teams like the Saints and Falcons– whom we love!

@Fred Like I said at the beginning of the season I don’t think the coaches were aware of how bad or OL was. They could not check to see if McKinney was keeping his promise to keep in shape. Nor did Frazier want to deal with im once they found out he was out of shape. Our OL would not be as bad as it was with Big Mac in it. He’s been playing very well with the Ravens just turn onthe TV.

@Fred our secondary has sucked so long no one here would remember the last time we had a good one. We have had great players but most of the time we filled in with suspect players at best. Heck Fraizer was complimenting how well Asher Allen had impoved. Talk about blinders.

  905. By Mike B. on Jan 22, 2012 | Reply

In fact to show how blind they were things they bring in Mc Nabb as Frazier thought they had a chance to make the playoffs. Come on Fred The organization couldn’t even see how bad we were this last season. They will address this issue this season with a combination of FA and Draft, but these will be young guys or FA coming off Rookie contracts. Thus the reason I am saying Blackmon is for us to groom a blue chip WR.

    @Mike B.,

That is one of the points MANY blogger were noticing. We KNEW where the Vikings were weak.

How come those INSIDE THE ORGANIZATION, THE POWERS THAT BE did not know???

I think they knew, it was just like a Jerry Springer show, everybody talking, nobody listening. In some cases we may have been down to our last second to make a pick there was so much arguing.

So the move to get Spielman as GM was better than it was before. But Spielman has a lot to prove, and he’s a “pick the best athlete” guy, unfortunately.

That is how we got Rudolph and Gerhart, who have been unnecessary so far.

Let’s not put the the cart (wr, te, qb, rb) before the horse (G,T,C, G, T).

Look for yourself Fred 2 of the 4 OTs on the rams 1 is a first round pick and the other is a 2nd round pick. Picking an OT in the first round doesn’t guarantee you a winning time.

not have watched the games the last two years!!!

Our OL has been the same for years except last year. We went to the playoffs in 08 and 09. Both can be contributed to older QBs coming on the team and showing how it’s done. Gus F and Brett F. Our secondary the same for longer than that.

did you bother to check the current roster OT and where they were picked in the draft. You all are so pumped about an OT for our first pick. There is no guarantee that it will make that much difference. We have more needs than just OT or CB. We need a WR and probably Linebackers depending on FA.

    2008 3rd rounder
2007 none in top 4 rounds of the draft

    2005 a 1st and a 3rd
2004 none in top 6 rounds
2003 none in top 5 rounds

The St. Louis Rams drafted OLs similar to that of the Vikings.
Gee, they were 2-14. What was your point already?

  943. By Frederick Jones on Jan 22, 2012 | Reply

    @Mike B.,

I spent a lot of time researching your claims about the St. L. Rams which proved to be bogus.

Unfortunately you think a little bit too much like Spielman. That kind of thinking makes the Vikings 6-10, 3-13, repeat for 20 years.

Football is played in the trenches, and it that truth will never change!

  944. By Mike B. on Jan 22, 2012 | Reply

You’re not going to draft OL every year they are some of the longest lasting players in the NFL. The fact they drafted someone in 2009 and 2010 points that they were looking at the age of their line and they still had a losing season. Thus not always even when looking at the Line and drafting replacements get you a win. The trenches aren’t the only place a game is won or lost. I am pointing out that we need to look at the players at the position and say is Kalil that much better at OT than Blackmon is at WR or they guy at CB is he that more outstanding at CB than the other two. Pick the best player at a position that is a need of the team. Your insistant preaching is annoying and is not good football practice.

Interesting article in today’s Halifax Chronicle-Herald………MADRID, SPAIN.(AP……A flam1ing-horned bull tr@mpled and fatally gored a man early Saturday during a festival in eastern Spain…..Large b@lls of fl@ming wax are traditionally affixed to the beast’s heads before they are let loose to rampage through squares and narrow streets in such festivals……..Kind of makes you want to phone stub-hub for front-row seats next year..There’s nothing like setting a bull’s head on fire and then sticking around to watch his reaction.

The statements in the article do nothing to change my mind on who the better Minnesota Viking is or was. The debate never was potential. After all Troy Williamson had potential. Ryan Leaf had potential. Cindy Rice had potential. Potential means nothing if you dont PLAY FOOTBALL.

Jemarcus Russell had potential and Chris Cook has potential. Hes done nothing.

I went to a bullfight once in Mexico– being a writer and a fan of Hemingway, who was an avid aficionado of bullfighting, I wanted to go. But it was pretty sick. Got some good photos though.

Okay, so now we’ll be hearing all week about the Super Bowl re-match. Brady vs. Eli. Personally, I think that Brady needs to really put himself together if he’s going to win this one. The Giants just beat the top two teams in the NFL to get to the Super Bowl, and I don’t see their fire running out now. My early prediciton is that the Giants will take another close win to finish this season. But I’ll be cheering for the Patriots.

1071. By TITUS THE GREAT on Jan 22, 2012 | Reply

There is a big lesson here for all the naysayers and fans that boo and cry when teams are so so at the start of a season. Where are all the teams that started 5-0 or like GB, at 13-1? HUH? Better to be strategic toward growth and adjustments, while building team chemistry to ultimately peak at the last half of the season– Giants were 9-7 folks. Last year, the Pack were 10-6. Support your team and don’t boo.

  1072. By Spencer on Jan 22, 2012 | Reply

  1073. By Parody on Jan 22, 2012 | Reply

Viking-ology – you can block that tie. Just wait for Titus to make his prediction and pick the same team. The ball is in your court!

1074. By TITUS THE GREAT on Jan 22, 2012 | Reply

Viking-ology, there is a strong chance, given our near parallel records, that we will pick the same team. Giants look like the obvious choice- but both sides look good- Coughlin is a protoge of the Big Tuna. Belichick a mastermind in his own right. Both quarterbacks are very good. Giants may have an edge in D, though.

  1075. By Parody on Jan 22, 2012 | Reply

McNabb was not our team. Bringing him in was a mistake after we drafted a QB in the first round.

  1076. By Viking-ology on Jan 22, 2012 | Reply

I know this is crazy sounding to some of you, but here goes it. We aren’t going anywhere next season. A great season would be 8-8. We will still be an old team with lots of holes. Let’s build something. Let’s trade Jared Allen, Schiancoe, Kevin Williams, and Percy Harvin. I’d offer to trade A.P. but it’s too late now that he’s injured. I love these guys, but if we can get a first or second round pick for each over the next 2 to 3 years, we get younger. We have a healthier financial picture, and we’re then built for the long haul. Let’s put playoffs on the table in 2014 and super bowl by 2016. I’ve waited since 78′ I plan on being alive when we go to the next one!

    @Mike B.,

We can watch a game, and say “look at that great play that db had, he won the game for Carolina.” Or we could say, “that throw by Manning was the greatest I have ever seen.” “Peyton won another game for Indy.”

BUT BOTH OF THOSE PLAYS WERE products OF LINE PLAY.

The saying, “Football is played in the trenches,” has been around for a long time
for a reason. It is the truth.

It’s not all these goof b a l l s who go to the end zone, and stand on a platform after a touchdown. Truly, truly, truly, they would not be there without blocking.

C l a s s players like Barry Sanders handed the ball to the referee after scoring a TD.
He acted like he had been there before, over 100 times. AND HE KNEW THAT HE DID NOT DO IT ALONE!!!

Did any one else hear that Chilly was being an open option for the HC of the Colts. Man I feel sorry for them if that happens but at least then the Vikings will not have to pay him anymore, I believe. In that case, take him Colts and let him ruin your Colts team just like he did with the Vikings (making teammates fight and argue against each other during a game). HAHAHA

$$$$ OTHER PEOPLES MONEY $$$$ Some people feel they are entitled too it. This is ‘the stadium issue.’ Everyone who fills the metrodome should write an additiional $1,000 dollar check, and poof no more issue. Now I personally think the people who do not care about football should not be required to pay for it. The price is very high to have a fine team like the Vikes were in town. The NFL owners, staff and players are GREAT people, but search not for the scent of Robin Hood to find them in Minnesota. I think they have much more money than most. I am sorry, as I love the Vikes, Wilfs, and Minn.

    Titus-
Does your comparison of other teams s0-so play /records imply that other teams fans are blindly cheering optimistically without expressing displeasure? Seems implausible.
Also, SOME teams, when the chips are down, get motivated to play better. This has not been the case with the Vikings,,,…The Vikings have largely been a team that disappoints, finds ways to lose, and cannot seem to win THE GAME. Vikings fans bear the burden of 50 years of disappointment.so IMO your comparisons are not entirely accurate.

So if you do not have a child in school, you should not have to pay taxes to support schools? If you do not own a car, you should not have to pay taxes for street maintenance? If you do not go to museums, you should not have to support them with tax dollars? You do not belkieve in gov’t so you should not have to support law enforcement, the courts, municpal and state agencies?

@ Titus – I have spent 21 years of my life in Minnesota and 21 years of my life in Chicago. The weather in Chicago is nothing compared to Minnesota weather. It is milder than Chicago, the difference is when Chicago has bad weather, they let everyone know about it. I think that the culture here lends itself to hoping for bad things to happen so they can wear that on their sleeve like a badge of honor. I have had friends come from Chicago to Minnesota with me during the Winter and they will never go back.

A Republican got us out of Vietnam. Korean War was under Truman, and guess what— he was a democrat. Spanish American war of 1898– oops, who was president? A democrat. Mexican American war — oops, another democrat was president.

    Vike Nasty’s Draft order
    1. OT or CB
    2. CB or C
    3. S or CB
    4. S or CB
    5. WR/Return Specialist
    6. Kick Cover
    7. Kick Cover
Obviously if CB was taken first and second the 3 and 4 would go to alternate. Would also depend on projected talent of need positions in next years draft. Feel like Safety’s are important in a Cover 2. Next year take alternates and top round LB and wideout. What do you think?

  1109. By VikeNasty on Jan 24, 2012 | Reply

I feel like with a Cover 2 you have to have a line that can stop the run and get at the quarterback, LB’s that can run like safety’s to cover receivers crossing the middle and deep middle, and Safety’s that can cover like CB’s to cover Wideouts when they outrun the CB’s zone.
