Jared Allen Named NFC Defensive Player of the Year by NFL 101 Awards

Posted by Mike Wobschall on January 17, 2012 – 12:55 pm

Two quarterbacks who direct the league’s most high-powered offenses will join two of the most formidable defensive players – one of which is Vikings DE Jared Allen - and two coaches who guided their teams to playoff appearances as the 2011 winners of the annual NFL 101 Awards. The NFL 101 Awards are the nation’s premier awards event dedicated exclusively to professional football.

The 2011 season award winners will be presented with trophies at the 42nd Annual NFL 101 Awards gala in Kansas City Saturday, March 3, 2012, at the Westin Crown Center. The prestigious black-tie awards event was founded in 1969 and has evolved into what many sports insiders consider the finest awards event of its kind. This year’s event is presented by Perfect Output and ECCO Select.

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady was selected as the AFC Offensive Player of the Year, Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodges was the NFC’s Offensive Player of the Year, Terrell Suggs was the AFC Defensive Player of the Year, Allen was the NFC Defensive Player of the Year, Houston Texans Head Coach Gary Kubiac was the AFC Coach of the Year and San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh was the NFC Coach of the Year.

A national media committee, comprised of 101 sportswriters and broadcasters who cover the NFL, selected the winners in each award category in a nationwide vote at the conclusion of the regular season. In addition to these award winners, the Committee of 101 also selects the Lamar Hunt Award for Professional Football, which was created in 2007 to honor the life and legacy of the founder of the Kansas City Chiefs and given in recognition of visionary leadership that has helped the NFL become the preeminent pro sports league in America. This year’s Lamar Hunt Award for Professional Football award winner will be announced in February.

The awards show hosts for the evening will be NFL Network sportscaster Paul Burmeister and CBS football analyst Rich Gannon, a former NFL Most Valuable Player and Minnesota Viking, and a two-time 101 Award winner.

Event proceeds this year will be directed to the Truman Medical Center Charitable Foundation through the Chiefs Children’s Fund, a 501(c)3 foundation that distributes funds to various children’s charities throughout the Kansas City area. TMC joined the Chiefs as the official Community Health Partner in September 2010. The Chiefs and TMC are working together to provide wellness education and promote healthier living for the people of Kansas City.  Both TMC and the Chiefs play a vital role in the Kansas City community and this partnership capitalizes on two well-established brands for the common goal of improving the health status of the community in general, and of the citizens in the urban core particularly.

Well, Spence…Do you have a comment on this?

Will you still harp on J.Allen not sacking anybody in the 4th Quarter…

    Nice VegasVike!!!!
I think the Vikes are in a great spot with the #3 pick in the draft!! Reading some scenarios on Bleacher
report, there will be 3-4 teams who may make a trade with the Vikes just to draft RG3, since Matt Barkley and Landry Jones have decided to stay in school!!! The best one that I read was one where the Browns trade both of there first round picks to the Vikes, just to move up one spot to get RG3!! Not likely to happen, but I would take that all day!!! The Redskins and Dolphins may be on the phone with the Vikes on draft day, with both teams wanting to get RG3!! The ‘Skins may have to give up to many picks to do the deal, but the one I like here is, the Dolphins getting Minny’s 3rd pick and the Vikes moving down to the 9th pick and getting CB Vontae Davis as part of the trade!! In that scenario, I would ask for there 2nd round pick as well!! This offseason will be a great one to follow!!!

Actually this is great news on Kirkpatrick! His going to be a great CB but his not worth a #3 overall pick. Maybe now he will drop to the 2nd round because of this and the VIKINGS can take him with their 2nd round pick.

    We LOVE trouble maker corners!

But seriously, his not a franchise QB, pot shouldn’t even be illegal in the first place, the man won the BCS championship, he was probably just smoking a blunt to celebrate. This isn’t a big deal.

Too bad that weed was probably the most expensive weed he has ever smoked. He easily cost him self a couple of million dollars right there.

The trade with the Redskins would be more likely then the Browns plus LT Riley Rieff would still be around at the Skins pick. Then Skins would probably give up in addition to this years 1st this years 2nd next years 1st and next years 3rd or 4th. Then the Vikes would have two 1st next year and would be in great position to move up for some one like USC WR Robert Woods or FSU CB Xaiver Rhodes.

  30. By Rogerthevikefan on Jan 17, 2012 | Reply

If the Skin, Phins, or Browns believe RGIII is a Franchise QB the would be more than willing to sell the farm to get a hold of him. I could see the Phins giving up WR Brandon Marshall and CB V. Davis along with a couple high round draft picks for him.

Besides J. Allen the Vikes D seems to like a certain fire. So to fix this if he falls into the 2nd round take ARIZONA MLB Vontez Burfict (not sure if his name is spelt right) he is a mad man he is so intense that coaches and refs have had to tell him to calm down.

After beating the Vikings 39-10 and 17-13 during the regular season, the Chicago Bears are still finding ways to make life difficult for Leslie Frazier, who, it’s worth noting, once was a standout cornerback in Chicago.

    Go figure.

As Frazier continues to search for a new defensive coordinator — he formally removed Fred Pagac from that post late last week — his interest in Bears defensive backs coach Jon Hoke was blocked. According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the Vikings requested permission to interview Hoke for their coordinator opening but were denied. Hoke still has one year left on his contract in Chicago. And it’s possible the Bears didn’t want to help out their division rival.

Still, this isn’t the first time Lovie Smith and the Bears have shot down a request from another team to talk with one of their as sistants. According to the Tribune, Chicago’s offensive line coach Mike Tice wasn’t allowed to interview for an offensive coordinator position in Tennessee last year, instead given a raise by the Bears. Writes Biggs:

It remains to be seen if the Bears will add a year to Hoke’s deal or give him a b ump in pay. Teams are only required to grant permission for as sistants under contract to interview with other teams when a h ead-coaching position is involved.

“Hopefully, we’ll have some guys on our staff get an opportunity to move up, whether that be as sistant coaches moving into coordinator’s roles,” Smith said Jan. 2. “Or I’d like to see someday where some guys on our staff will get an opportunity to become h ead coaches in the NFL.”

Looks like these divisional rivalries still have some teeth. Let’s not forget that in December when the Vikings attempted to sign receiver Tori Gurley off the practice squad in Green Bay,
Gurley opted to stay with the Packers in a lesser role
rather than joining the Vikings’ 53-man roster.

Vikings need to stud up their O line before they go in search of a new QB, we don’t know what Ponder is capable of until then. O line and secondary in the draft, a proven stretch WR in F/A and the Vikes will be back in it. And who knows…? How does Spence have me?

I always maintained a stance of second or third chances. I understand Cook has “potential” but I also understand Cook has done nothing for the Viking organization except flash that “potential” a few times in his 8 starts through 2 seasons.

I have also maintained Griffin had an awfull season but with 70 career starts and never missing a start due to anything but an injury he is a better Minnesota Viking than Chris Cook.

Lastly if anyone is suggesting smoking some weed is equivelant to beating up a girl and trying to choke her out, they should rethink life.

So yes if a top 10 talent falls to the 3rd pick of the second round … I say take him. Of course there will need to be plenty of scouting done and if a couple marijuana arrests are all he has … whats the issue?

  64. By NorthwoodsVikesFan on Jan 17, 2012 | Reply

    100% true, Vegas.

We don’t need another QB – we scored enough points with our porous O-line and supposedly less than average WR corps to win games IF, IF, IF, IF, IF, IF, and I stress, IF our secondary had been able to stop the other team from scoring.

We lost 9 games by a TD or less. A better QB and WR corps would have done us no good. A better secondary to stop the other team from scoring ONE TD per game, OR a better O-Line to give our QB 2 extra seconds to scan the field and let the WRs run a complete route so we could have scored ONE TD more per game, and we’d be 13-3.

WE DON’T NEED ANOTHER QB. Fix the problems, and the good stuff will get better by itself.

  65. By Spence on Jan 17, 2012 | Reply

Shawn, just stop with the “He was a better Minnesota Viking” thing. Thats a weak argument. Whose the better player is what everyone, but you, cares about. And Cook is miles better than Griffin at guarding the opposing teams best WR.

Frederick Jones, we will know if it is WWF if it is a Superbowl between brothers.

Vegas is right on the O Line– look at Green Bay with Mr Perfect QB who had unheard of ratings in the 120 range– look at what happened to Mr Perfect in the playoffs when his O line did not hold up- he had a Tarvaris rating.

    @NorthwoodsVikeFan,

I agree with you totally on your QB post, except that a great, established quarterback WOULD help. I wouldn’t be for it because it would cost too much.

The Packers in the 1970s obtained John Hadl for draft choices and possibly several players. Hadl bombed with the Pack like McNabb did with the Vikings.

Then Hadl came back the next year with the Rams and had a good year.

Spielman will have to be careful with the free agents. I would have to say that he did a great job getting Favre, and possibly some other people.

McNabb bombed with the Vikings, and that may hurt us this next season.

Cost-wise, I wish we should have stayed with Joe Webb, and drafted wisely. :)

  72. By Frederick Jones on Jan 17, 2012 | Reply

    SORRY,

I will have to correct myself on investigation of John Hadl’s career.

Yes, his trade for draft choice and what-not did hurt the Packers in the 1970s.

BUT…he played for the LA Rams BEFORE he played for Green Bay.

Lots of free agents have costed teams many, many dollars. Ultimately this can cost them championships. And it happens every season, I DARE SAY :)

You know this team and organization quite well, and have had top defenses in the past with this team.

    LESLIE FRAZIER FOR DC!!!!!!!!

  127. By Parody on Jan 18, 2012 | Reply

SPence & Shawn – Why don’t you two try to change your tune for a bit? It really doesn’t matter how they played in the past nearly as much as how they are likely to play in the future for this team. After all, Fran was the best QB this team has ever had, but nobody in their right mind would argue that he could give us the best option at the position in 2012.

So why not discuss what potential both players bring for the future? There are valid arguments for both sides. One, Cedric Griffin is going to be in his second year after recovering from major knee surgery, which, according to Shawn’s references, is the year you can expect the real comeback to occur. On the other side, Cook’s abilities to perform at a high level had surfaced in the games he played this year.

Arguments against include the fact that Griffin was benched for lack of production, and the argument that he may never truly recover from his injuries, and he was never truly a star CB at any point in his career. Cook’s legal issues are still at large, and there is plenty of liklihood that he’ll spend a year or two in jail before it’s all said and done.

It all boils down to the argument that Cook has more physical talent that would give him more potential to help this team out if he can avoid his legal problems, but Griffin is the more likely player who will have a chance to display his ability to live up to potential in the upcoming season.

Any way you slice it, there are good arguments for and against both people, and it all comes down to the level of importance one gives to each of the arguments.

  128. By Shawn on Jan 18, 2012 | Reply

Parody … How much better will Cook be than Griffen in prison. Your talking about a big “IF” with Chris Cook. Then even “IF” he gets out of it with little damage. (i know hes got enough money to buy his way out) Do you really trust him to play 16 games next season? There are things that can use an educated guess … 2 seasons 32 games. Cook has played in 6 games each.

Could he do it? sure he could. Should anyone count on it? NO

Could Griffin play 16 games? He has a pretty good track record. with the exception of 2010 he has missed 3 games in 5 seasons.

Like I said. Frazier said it best “Im not thinking about cook and im going forward like hes not here untill i hear differant.” (from memory … its close)

It is still speculation that none of these guys will return for next season.

Our Linebacking was average this year, getting rid of the Hendersons would not solve the problem UNLESS we can get better players. That may not be possible especially if we are busy revamping our defensive backfield.

Since the Henderson’s are FA this year, there is no guarantee that they will return or want to return. Griffen is still on contract, but I think if he wanted out of it he would be released. That really opens a big can of needs doesn’t it Fred. We would have to pretty much start from scratch on Defense. There isn’t enough draft picks to fill all the needs. We are going to need to be sharp when FA opens here. I think the draft should be the best availible player you need as they come up. I don’t think you should specifically fill a need. You need to look at the talent level too. We had TEs but got Rudolph last year and that was a good pick. I am still hoping we go for Blackmon, but will be happy with the best WR, OL, or CB on the board.

The reason Vikings are waiting on Cook is so no legal action can be taken against them…If the Vikings released Cook before his trial..It might look in the public eye as the Vikings seeing Cook as guilty before ever seeing his day in court…And then Cook could possibly sue the Vikings organization later on…If Cook is put in jail Or is found guilty of a criminal charge…Vikes get a conpensatory pick for him in the owners meetings in late March…If he is found innocent…Vikes most likely will trade Cook (if possible) for a draft pick to another team…Only reason Cook is still on the team…The Vikings have to be very careful…Being his employer and in the public eye…They need to have the courts make decisions before the Vikings can….Vikings have a chance to get something back for Cook if they wait it out…Releasing him last season they got nothing…And might have been fighting a law suit with Cook themselves…For making him look guilty in the public eye for releasing him without just cause….

Seriuosly folks, the Rams will be the team to trade down wiyh Browns or Skins and gobble up multi draft picks. Its a no Brainer Folks. The Vikes Will have There shot at Kalil or Claiborne or Blackmon. No doubt.

  186. By sandiamond on Jan 18, 2012 | Reply

Top 5 based on no trades but yes the best case is hoping the Rams pass by on a trade down and fall in love with Blackmon. If not we get Kalil imo

Way to go Jared Allen you are hands down the greatest Defensive end in the NFL and you proved it this season. GO69GO69GO69GO69.

Chris Cook’s has had a rough start in the NFL he has what it takes to be an elite Corner in this league.

What is up with this site? I posted something, sent it and it did not post. Now I post it and it says– duplicate comment, you already said that! Yeah, I said it, but it did not post. Aggravating. Spence, are you behind that?

Nope. Maybe Wobbs is keepin a keen eye on you, Titus.

Spence, who is going to the Superbowl?

  193. By Spence on Jan 18, 2012 | Reply

Brady and Smith. The Giants 49ers game is hard to call, but the Patriots Ravens game is much easier. I’ve said it once, and i’ll say it again. Joe Flacco is a Fraud.

WOW….It seems as though we are going to offer the Defensive Coaching Job to Allan Williams.

I know nothing about Allan Williams. I just hope that because his a DB coach, he teaches our DBs a thing or a two.

I think the Ravens are being underestimated.

At candlestick, the quarterback edge goes to NY. But the D of San Fran is very very good. I think the Niners will be hard to beat, but both games are really hard to predict.

Congrats to Jared Allen! You deserved to win. One of the few bright spots in an otherwise dismal season. Vikings can only go up from here (we hope!)

  203. By Viking-ology on Jan 18, 2012 | Reply

It would be good to have the DC in place. At least Alan Williams has quite a few years under his belt in an area we need the most help in. Now just slide Pagac in Singletary’s place, boot Singletary and fill that last coaching vacancy.

  204. By Titus on Jan 18, 2012 | Reply

Detroit will be the toughest team in our division next year. GB will fall apart now. Chicago will be okay, but they need a coaching change. But Detroit is motivated, trust me– they were humiliated in their playoff game after a 5-0 start. Expect them to be the best team in the NFC north, except for maybe the Vikings if they can get the right cast in place.

  205. By OTKalil2012 on Jan 18, 2012 | Reply

Just a few little notes for the Niner game though…Eli went home at practice today with a stomach flu…And it is supposed to rain Friday,Saturday, and Sunday in San Fran…Slow and muddy track…I give advantage to Gore and home field crowd noise…

  206. By Titus on Jan 18, 2012 | Reply

Thanks Kali, those are helpful particulars. I lean toward the Niners, mostly because they have a great defense. The Giants do not seem to be hurt by playing on the road.

  207. By OTKalil2012 on Jan 18, 2012 | Reply

Thanks Titus…I worry a some about the Giants against a team with a week of rest recently also…Having that bye week off can only help the Niners…The mental and physical part of the game in hostile territory…And on a rainy gloomy day forcasted….With Mannings getting over the flu…This might be one of those 10-3 scores at games end…

Griffen is under contract, but he wasn’t happy being benched and fell out of favors with coach Frazier!!
Henderson brothers are free agents and EJ has been with the Vikes for 9 years now, and it’s highly unlikely they will offer him a contract being that old!! They may offer Erin a contract!! Jasper Brinkley will be back next year, so I see him taking over the middle or going to strong side or weak side, that means we will need to draft a MLB!! We need to get younger on defense, but I totally agree with the DB’s being the focus on this defense!!

  209. By Rudso on Jan 19, 2012 | Reply

61vikings, I say we sign EJ Henderson for at least another year or two. He may be old but his one of our leaders on defense and he is still very productive at MLB. He might not be Patrick Willis or Rey Lewis but he is a key piece to our LBs.

With so many holes to fill, we can’t make more holes by releasing our productive veterans. With OT, WR, CB, S all being huge needs, now RB might even be a need in later rounds of the draft. We can’t afford to at MLB to the list right now. Keep EJ Henderson.

    GREAT YEAR JARED!
But who really cares. We were a terrible team last year and things are not looking bright. It’s a team game. Individual goals are great but at the end of the day he would give that honor away to be back in the playoffs.

Keep working hard. And lead the others who need to learn this trait!

I’m a little nervous about our DC and defensive line coach hires! How is it we already have one of the worst defenses, and hire two coaches from the only two teams that had worse records than our lousy 3 wins???
