    Sorry about the double post,

    hey mike,
i was wondering if the colts take luck and the rams end up taking Matt Kalil who would we draft? also, is there any news on the stadium, i dont wanna root for the LA vikings.

Whats going on with the Chris Cook situation…..is Cook going to be a member for the Vikings in the 2011/12 season?

  4. By Spence on Jan 14, 2012 | Reply

If Chris Cook manages to avoid any jail-time, will he be a member on the Vikings for the 2012/13 season?

What’s taking so long on the Fred Pagac firing? Is he even going to be let go? How about Singletary? I’ve heard no one likes him. Are there even going to be any coaching changes?

I was wondering when the stadium gets built will they have a family section to where there will be no alcohol allowed in that section? They have one in San Diego and my family and I enjoyed the game. I know I will probably get criticized for this question but I enjoy bring my family to the games as a family event. I believe it should be for ALL types of people: single, married, or a family.

  7. By Parody on Jan 14, 2012 | Reply

Just because they sell alcohol doesn’t mean that you have to buy some for your kids.

I’ve been going to games at the Metrodome my whole life, and my dad hasn’t once bought me a beer…and it still proved to be a good family event every time!

Mike – I just watched the Saints get beaten by the 49ers. The SF defence is absolutely incredible. How much of its success can be attributed to Mike Singletary, in your opinion?

  9. By Parody on Jan 14, 2012 | Reply

But seriously Brad, if you want to make certain your kids don’t have to be near alcohol, you can always rent out one of the luxury boxes and just pay a little extra to make sure they don’t come in offering you any liquour.

Who was a better Minnesota Viking … Ced Griffen or Chris Cook?

    Mike,

Can you give us an idea of the liklihood that a stadium will be approved this year, and an idea of what plan/location is getting the most support from the state politicians?

  13. By Parody on Jan 14, 2012 | Reply

Wow Shawn, talk about a loaded question.

It’s that wide open type of question that has been the catalyst for your arguments with Spence. You two have very different definitions of what makes a good Minnesota Viking.

Cook appears to be the better corner back by far. They’ve both had injury problems, and Cook is killing himself with his off-field issues. However, I think people are passing judgement on him too early. So many fans are already deciding that he’s guilty before seeing the evidence or giving him a trial.

We should all just wait and see how his court case pans out. If he can avoid any significant jail time, I think he deserves one last chance. I’m not pardoning him for what he did, but I’m not ready to hang him for it either. We’re a society that believes everyone has the ability to turn their life around, so let’s give him a chance to. One more slip up, and he’s gone, but let’s be patient and allow the guillotine to rust up just a little bit longer.

I noticed. Don’t let it bug you too much. It’s called a toungue twister for a reason. Now we can just call it a finger twister too.

  16. By Shawn on Jan 14, 2012 | Reply

I agree mostly Parody. Yes I think Frazier handled it properly. Cook could come out of this thing having learned his lesson and show everyone he can be a good Minnesota Viking. I am not against Chris Cook but if asked the question who is the better Minnesota Viking. I feel that Cedric Griffen wins that debate due to 6 years of service and doing the best job he could fighting back from 2 major knee injuries in an 18 month stretch. I think it was. Where as the other guy to this point has done nothing but leave the organization and its fans with a black eye.

I dont think casting judgement is the point of some or most fans debate. At time due to a sensitive issue I think things were said but ultimately I believe fans point is that Cook hasnt done anything yet 8 games started with a few flashes of talent doesnt equal a good Viking. Griffen has 3 seasons of very quality football under his belt. Griffen has not put himself in a position to miss football games other than hard football play.

    @Titus,

I admit that I’m not always sure what motivates Mike Wobschall to a s s i g n topics to his blogs. I think making a headline for each playoff game is a good idea.

Not many people respect what the blog is about, and I’m one of the worst.

Titus, you are a college professor. I have to do an A P A style paper in one of my courses this semester. It’s only a 7 pager. But….
Maybe I could pretend APA stands for American Paddleball A s s o c i a t i o n, and just write the thing any way I want! What are my chances?

  18. By Parody on Jan 14, 2012 | Reply

I just never cared for Griffen much from the beginning. Before his injuries he was alright, but I still had complaints about the way he played. I don’t recall receivers ever getting past him before the injury, but I know that he always made it too easy for his man to catch the ball. That’s just from his safe form of play. He’d sit back far enough that he couldn’t contend for the catch, but he was always right there for the tackle after they caught it. It led to very few yards after catch, but a very high completion percentage against him. I’d honestly prefer someone who would show the ability to get between the ball and receiver much more successfully.

Fred – APA is simple. Just make sure to follow any quotation with (Author, year, page#), and create a reference list by following the guidelines on Purdue Owl’s APA website.

I’ve had to do a lot of APA papers in the past two years, so it’s become pretty second nature for me. I’d be happy to review it for you when you’re done if you’d like.

OK fair enough Parody. I will stand by my 70 games started and no off the field issues. Keeping in mind that the Frazier D is not man to man so even Winfield isnt known for tight coverage but allow the catch and make a quick tackle. I will take the 70 games started and no arrests as beating 8 games started and 2 arrests.

Fred – I’ve tried explaining the special characters before, but here it is again:
While holding down the ALT button, type a combination of numbers on your numpad (it must be the numpad, this does not work if you use the numbers at the top of your keyboard). Here are a few combinations for vowels that I’ve found very userful:

    ALT+0228 = ä
    ALT+0232 = è
    ALT+0238 = î
    ALT+0242 = ò
    ALT+0252 = ü

Shawn – In Winfield’s defense, the QB didn’t throw the ball his way nearly as often as they threw it at Cedric’s man. That tells me he was much more disruptive than Cedric. For corners, they don’t necessarily need to make big plays to be considered good. If QBs are sending the ball away from them, then they’re doing what they need to be.

Best to avoid quotations as much as possible, except when the language is so unique or profound that the quote enriches your paper– try paraphrasing, which also creates a more seamless flow to your paper, because, after all, the majority of your paper is then in your writing “voice.” Also, best to avoid parentheticals during in-text citations for author’s names, but rather, use signal phrases– this adds to the credibility of your argument by allowing your reader to see the “expert” up front.

APA itself, is quite intricate, but in college, esp undergrad, it is usually mostly concerned with in-text citations and some minor formatting. The only complication may come when you use an electronic source. And most instructors seem to have their own version. I am not a big fan of OWL, although I know most of my comrades think it is great– recently, I found out, while I dissented one day, that a few others, inc a librarian also are not fond of it– but everyone is different– use what works for you.

  35. By Shawn on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

Also a fair argument. I think the issue in this argument is answering the actual question.

The quest was not which CB has more potential. The question was who is the better Minnesota Viking.

    Is it

1- 70 career Viking starts …. no off the field issues

    or

2- 8 career Viking starts … 2 arrests. not DUIs but brandishing a weapon and assault resulting in injury

Who is the better Minnesota Viking?

Its the last time I ask … I dont see how its debatable

  40. By Parody on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

Titus – I have had professors who prefer it done the way you explained, but I have also had professors who prefer many direct quotes. Almost to the extent where the entire paper is focused on connecting a series of direct quotes into a summary of an article.

Because of that, I would suggest that Fred find out what the expectations are of the paper he is writing. It seems that even though there are professional sources that indicate the way it is supposed to be done, the people reviewing it can never agree on a single way that is acceptable.

  41. By Parody on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

Shawn – Neither player’s career is over, and one of them has been in the league much longer than the other. So, naturally, your method of comparison will be biased until they have both left the team. Potential needs to be considered in order to make any form of fair comparison at this point.

  42. By Parody on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

Titus – To clarify, by “signal phrases” do you mean something to the tune of:

In his debate with some of the most profound fans of the Vikings, Titus (2012) bragged adamantly about his ability to predict the results of playoff games.

  43. By TITUS THE GREAT PREDICTOR on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

Of course, Parody– did I not mention that every instructor has their own version? But great writing does keep direct quotes to a minimum. The exception is if Fred is doing a lit review– then load up on the parentheses. I am more concerned with the clarity and organization in writing than superfluous details like where does the date go, etc.

  44. By TITUS THE GREAT PREDICTOR on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

THE FRONT OFFICE IS ESSENTIALLY GIVING A PASS TO CHRIS COOK FOR WHAT HE DID ? ? ? WHAT, THEY COULDN’T GIVE McKINNIE THE SUPPORT THAT BALTIMORE GAVE HIM?

NO PLAYER IS WORTH COMPROMISING AN ENTIRE ORGANIZATION’S CORE VALUES!

WHAT THE VIKINGS ARE SAYING IS, “WINNING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN CHARACTER”.

    BRAVO VIKINGS. . . .

  61. By Parody on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

Paul – Do you think that’s all McKinnie did? Is your memory so horrible that you don’t recall the loveboat scandal, or the multiple years he had of declining production?

McKinnie did not want to be a Viking, and he showed it in multiple ways. He was given many chances to show otherwise, to show that he was worth the big contract, but he continued to fail. There’s a limit to how many second chances a guy can get. McKinnie reached that when he showed up to camp overweight, with little drive to fix his problem in MN.

Cook has not even been convicted of a crime yet, and we don’t know his level of remorse for it. Wait to see how things turn out, and give him a second chance if he’s willing to work for it. Everyone deserves a second chance. Depending on how they use it, they may lose that privilage, like McKinnie eventually did.

    Sand-
Our Oline is gonna Get Ponder killed.
    Also, COACHES……..
It’s easy to remember Denny Green’s paranoia and malapropisms. The man wore his flaws the way Rollie Fingers wore a mustache. He also won 117 NFL games and advanced to two NFC title games.

Green lasted as a coach not because of interpersonal skills or innovations. He lasted because of one great strength: an eye for talent.

Green could watch a flawed young receiver like Cris Carter and predict greatness, and he could spot a problematic college receiver like Randy Moss and see a star. Early in his tenure with the Vikings, Green often demonstrated his knack for judging talent when choosing a ssistant coaches.

Leslie Frazier, unlike Green, succeeded as an NFL coordinator before becoming the Vikings head coach. Frazier, unlike Green, is well liked by most of the people who work at Winter Park. Frazier, unlike Green, has yet to demonstrate a knack for finding coaching talent, one of the most important responsibilities of an NFL head coach.

After Roger Headrick hired him away from Stanford, Green as embled a staff that included Tony Dungy, Tom Moore, Monte Kiffin, John Teerlinck, Ty Willingham, Willie Shaw and Brian Billick. Green even brought in two players, Mike Tice and Jack Del Rio, who would become NFL head coaches.

At the time, nobody knew just how impressive that list of names would become.

Dungy rehabilitated a sag ging career as Green’s defensive coordinator and became an outstanding head coach.

Tom Moore coached receivers for Green. Not until he mentored Peyton Manning as the Colts offensive coordinator would his methods gain fame.

Monte Kiffin coached inside linebackers. He would become one of the great defensive coordinators in NFL history.

Brian Billick coached tight ends. He would win a Super Bowl while running the Ravens.

Willie Shaw coached the secondary for Green; he would become an NFL defensive coordinator. His son now coaches Stanford.

Ty Willingham would become the coach at Notre Dame and Teerlinck would coach the Colts defensive line for Dungy when they won the Super Bowl.

In 2001, when Green lost his job, his coaching staff had lapsed to the point where owner Red McCombs’ top choice as Green’s replacement was Tice, then an offensive line coach who had never been a coordinator or head coach at any level.

As sistant coaches are vital in the NFL. Head coaches make the most important decisions; coordinators do the most important work.

Frazier has been on the job for more than a year now. His first coaching staff performed poorly.

A charitable view of offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave would hold that he was hamstrung by erratic quarterbacks and limited receivers, and that his strength is developing young quarterbacks, making him a good fit for a franchise relying on Chris tian Ponder. But Musgrave is in his third stint as an NFL coordinator, and the first two did not end well.

Frazier’s pick to be his first defensive coordinator, Fred Pagac, either failed outright or wasn’t a good fit to run Frazier’s preferred defense. Either way, Frazier made a mistake hiring him, and now Pagac is officially on the job even while Frazier seeks his replacement.

Frazier has fired defensive line coach Karl Dunbar, whose unit was the team’s strength last season.

Coming off a 3-13 season and remaining supportive of Musgrave, Frazier has one chance to dramatically upgrade his staff, and that’s by hiring a dynamic defensive coordinator.

With Mel Tucker and Raheem Morris taking other jobs, conventional wisdom holds that there are three other top candidates: former Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo, Vikings linebackers coach Mike Singletary and Eagles defensive coordinator Juan Castillo, who could be replaced in Philadelphia by Spagnuolo.

Spagnuolo is an excellent defensive coordinator. Castillo struggled last season in his transition from offensive line coach to defensive coordinator, but the Philadelphia defense improved as the year progressed. Singletary has not proved himself in any way as an NFL coach.

If Frazier can land Spagnuolo, there may be hope for his tenure. If Frazier settles for Singletary, he may be out of a job by next October.

Take it from Denny Green, Leslie: NFL head coaches are often defined by the company they keep in meeting rooms.

LOL OK Parody … Chris Cook is a true professional. A role model. A teamate. He is the standard to which the Viking organization should be held. Through 8 career starts he has shown he is what every Viking fan should recognize as a hero. I for one can now fully appreciate the contribution Chris Cook has given the Minnesota Vikings. I now think Ive asked to much of him. 8 games started. Clearly thats the gold standard of a Viking Corner.

I must say thank you for awakening me to the greatness of Chris Cook. The things he has done for the Minnesota Vikings are countless. It feels good to be awake. WOW thank you.

  86. By Shawn on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

Its a brand new day for me

Cook vs Griffen … first 2 seasons

    Cook … 12 games … 8 starts … 41 tackles … 6 pass break ups … THE END
    Griffen . 30 games .. 23 starts . 135 tackles … 20 pass break ups … 2 INTs … 4 FF

How can these facts be questioned? I should have opened my eyes to see the greatness of Chris Cook. He dominated Cedric Griffen in a first 2 season competition. Chris Cook amazing. WOW ….

Parody more evidence of Chis Cooks greatness

Cooks career (2 seasons) vs Griffin’s rookie season(1 Season)

    Cook … 12 games … 8 starts … 41 tackles … 6 pass break ups … THE END
    Griffin .. 14 games … 7 starts … 43 tackles …. 10 pass break ups … 2 INTs … 2 FF

No matter how you slice it Chris Cook dominates Cedric Griffin

  91. By Shawn on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

For every NFL team there are 2 starting CBs (doesnt include NB / DB ) x 16 games= 32 games worth of starting CB play.

32 games per season for CB starts x 2 seasons = 64 games started at CB

Chris Cook = 8 starts = professional CB for the MN Vikings = greatness = teamate

    64 – 8 = 52 games … who cares we had Chris Cook for 8 games

Here is a question to my fellow Viking fan brothers and sisters:
What do you think of Hue Jackson for Offensive Coordinator?

This is just hypothetical. I’m just not sold on Musgrave at all, and if he’s not replaced, I’m afraid next season will just be a repeat of very predictable play calling. (it’s embarrassing because even I can predict the play calling we have)

For those who are also not sold on Musgrave, who are some other candidates you would like to see here?

PS. Please work out a stadium deal and stay in MN

  93. By Parody on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

Fine Shawn. Just keep on being arrogant. You are only blinding yourself to potential. I’m not Spence. I’m not saing that Cook is better than Griffen is or ever was. I’m only saying that while Griffen has not been impressing me, I truly believe that Cook still can.

But go ahead and lead the drive to fire Cook ASAP. You are the judge, and you obviously know all the facts, so you must know that Cook is an evil person who has no chance of ever turning his life around. We don’t need good corners anyways. We just need guys who try hard, and don’t make news off the field…regardless of how ineffective they are on the field.

  94. By Shawn on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

You are right Parody. First Im all about second chances or third chances. I havent said Chris Cook is evil. In fact Im a Randy Moss fan so clearly character is not an issue or the issue to me. Randy Moss didnt miss games he showed up to battle every week and 90% of the time he was a factor. I dont care what cook did off the field. The point is hes done nothing ON THE FIELD. Couple of flashes and gone.

Secondly I agree Cedric Griffen tore his knee at the end of 2009 and then tore the other one 2 games into 2010. Then he comes into 2011 and has an awfull season in which he started and was one of the weakest links for 12 starts. But he showed up to the fight.

You showed me Brian Robison is a solid DE opposite Jared Allen while I say 2007, 2008, and 2009 Cedric Griffin was Antoine Winfields Brian Robison. He was Robin to Batman. He has played 1 full season since blowing out both knees and that is unforgivable to the Spence’s of the blog. But acts of violence on the community are ok. I dont judge Chris Cook , I say its hypocritical to bail on a warrior but pat the other guy on the back.

Many medical experts say its the second season you fully recover from a major knee injury well ….

  95. By Parody on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

Shawn – All you appear to be able to see is some unfortunate stats caused by poor choices from a person who is and always was a dispicable excuse for a human being.

I see a kid who has the potential to be a great starter. He has the physical traits, and skills on the field to surpass the likes of Griffen. If we don’t look for players with potential, then we’re accepting that whoever we bring in is already as good as they’ll ever be. They’ll either be hurting the team with the giant salaries they demand, or hurting the team because they never get better than they were in their rookie year.

I see a kid who has made some poor decisions in his early career. I don’t excuse him for it. But I believe most people have a natural drive to want to be good people, and Cook deserves a chance to show that he is one of these people with how he acts after this whole thing is over. For me, Cook will be judged not by how he killed his 2011 season, but by how he acts in the future after the ordeal has been finalized.

  96. By Shawn on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

BTW I dont care if Ced Griffin gets cut, he was that bad. But he was a better Minnesota Viking than Chris Cook. To succeed or to fail you first have to show up.

  97. By Parody on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

Okay Shawn, that sounds much more reasonable. I hope both Cook and Griffen return to the Vikings and show that they can prove the doubters wrong. I’m sorry for calling you out. i just hate it when I see such unfounded hatred in these blogs.

  99. By Shawn on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

Parody … I totally see and understand your argument. Lots of kids with tons of potential have come to the NFL. Chris Cook has “potential” . Potential means nothing if you dont play games. Sydney Rice has potential but he for differant reasons wont be as great as his potential.

  100. By Parody on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

Shawn – Very true. Even Randy Moss couldn’t live up to his potential. He set some NFL records, but if he had been more of a team player, he had the potential to have shattered just about every record that existed for an NFL receiver. Now he’s retired, earlier than he should have, and leaves the game with a lot of missed opportunities left on the field.

  101. By Gary on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

If Kalil is goes at #2, how likely is it that the Vikes trade down with a team wanting to move past Cleveland for RG3? Who is the most likely trade candidate? What teams are the other trade possibilities? If the Vikes trade down once, how likely is it that they trade down again in round one and who would be those trade partners? Is the groundwork for those transactions laid out well before the draft?

FYI – Cris Carter had a horrible start to his career. In a time where the media wasn’t nearly as involved in the personal lives of the NFL, Carter was getting himself in his fair share of trouble. He was released “because of alcohol and drug abuse, large amounts of ecstasy and marijuana,” based on his wikkipedia page. We took a chance on him, but still had to wait a year before he started to produce. It wasn’t until his 5th year in the league, and 2nd year with the Vikings that Carter had his first 50+ catch year. It wasn’t until his 5th year with the Vikings that Carter had his first double-digit TD performance with the team. And now Carter is deemed one of the best WRs to have ever played the game, with all of the people who ever called themselves his fans dumbfounded that he still is not in the Hall of Fame.

We’re glad to hear that Peterson had a successful surgery and is on track with his rehab. How are the other players that ended the year early due to injury, like Gerhart, Ponder, Hutch, Burton, Abdullah, Jenkins, Johnson, Brinkly, and Winfield? Particularly with Peterson hurt Frasier and Musgrave might want him splitting reps with Gerhart more, will he be back to 100% by then? Also, when Peterson says he wants to be ready to go for the first game of next season, does that mean ready to play in that game, or ready to start practicing with the rest of the team by then?

Giants are good, but I think the Niners are more fresh and their defense is excellent. Giants looked like they had some injuries. Eli may be better than Alex, but this upcoming game will be based on the better d — which I think is the niners.

The refs were trying hard to give that game to the Packers, but Aaron couldn’t even win with all the help. I know Singley is being conside…but I hope it’s not serious consideration. I’ve heard reports that he was skipping team meetings throughout the year. Add to that the fact that we never once saw him in a press conference, when he was labeled as the Assistant Head Coach, (even though we saw the Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams coordinators multiple times), and I just don’t get a positive vibe from the idea of Singletary getting a promotion.

    @Parody n’ TheRealDon,

I think it would be okay to get Claiborne IF we also draft/obtain a top Offensive Lineman or two.

The trick for Rick is to combine the two via the draft/free agency/trades.

We must be OF ONE MIND AS FANS and ENCOURAGE rick to pick
the right people in the right positions.

I say concentrate on OLs and DBs.

  452. By Frederick Jones on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

We CANNOT immediately solve all of our position woes.

Yes we need and LB, WR, DT, etc.

But Spielman must KNOW to pick the best athlete, as long as the man plays OL or DB. :( :(

  456. By Parody on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

RealDon – Generally, starting LTs are gone by the end of the first round. If we were looking to fill other areas of the line, primarily C-RG-RT, then the 2nd round would be fine. But LT is our line’s biggest weakness, so I feel we need to invest in the position as early as possible.

  457. By TheRealDon on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

Frederick Jones..YES enough with the picking of best player but were good at that position

  459. By Parody on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

Good corners can usually still be found in the 2nd round. We’re unlikely to get a shut-down corner by then, but we would still be able to fill the need better than the need at LT. So I’d be happier if our draft started at the line, and then found a DB.

Yeah, I threw Spielman under the bus again. But he must understand that if he does not get it done this year, he is under it anyway!!!

T CB G/C S Ya gotta git it done!

  462. By Parody on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

RealDon – If Kalil is gone, then RG3 is still there. Trade value is BIG. I’d trade down and grab the 2nd or 3rd tackle with the early pick. If nothing else, we could then package the extra pick(s) we get with our 2nd rounder to move back high enough to grab a guy like Kirkpatrick.

Rams will most likley trade their pick to the highest bidder for the other top QB, which will leave the Vikings free and clear to pick up the best OT in a long time.

  467. By Parody on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

Fred – I doubt we’ll be looking for a center this year. I wasn’t too thrilled about it, but Sullivan’s new contract is a good argument that Frazier feels confident with the man he has. Leave in Fusco as the backup, and we’re full at the position.

  468. By Alex on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

So now that the packers lose no trophy for you. On to more important things. I think that we need to get Manning for the Colts or if that doesn’t happen how about Kyle Orton from KC. Lets face it he isn’t going to get the start over Cassell so lets take him and get rid of Ponder, because he sucks. We need to get Justin Blackmon in the draft and take Samuels from the Eagles, and pick up a Veteran WR in free agency. We need a Safety and i think we go after Justin tuck or Osi Uminyuria from the giants to replace robison. We need to also go out and get Flozel Adams from the steelers and we should be set. GOOOOOOOOOOOOO VIKINGS.

  469. By Frederick Jones on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

Spielman watches too much ESPN, The Herd, etc.

He might stay with Ponder because he picked him. But he might fall in love with a linebacker or wide receiver for the 1st round.

If he does that, HE HAD BETTER, have a solid plan for OL, DB in free agency or trades.

    No threats, Rick, only promises!!

I don’t know about that Viking-ology. I’ve seen mock drafts that have the Rams going with Kalil and many others that say they need Blackmon. It seems like their decision is far from final. Either way they go though, I think the Vikings are still in a great position to add some serious value to the team.

  472. By Viking-ology on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

Yes, if RG3 is still there @ #3 I think the Vikes should auction off that pick to the highest bidder and load up on picks. There is that Reef kid at OT that would be great, plus the extra picks would be a bonus.

Fred – If we’re adding value from Free Agency, I hope it happens before the draft! All the quality players will be long gone by the time draft day comes around.

We haven’t seen this team make any serious moves in free agency since the days where we picked up Winfield and Shiancoe. Hopefully they change their tune a little bit this year. I’d like to see us get at least one of our areas of need taken care of with a high quality free agent.

Shawn – How much did Singletary factor into those decisions? Did the 49ers have a GM, or did they trust their head coach to make the decisions on his own?

I recall hearing that Singletary was the man to blame for the Taylor Mays pick in the draft…but that story leads me to believe that he didn’t have as big of a say on the first round selections.

Spence – First of all, Shiancoe is a good receiving TE. He made some awesome catches over the past few years, but that was in part thanks to Favre sending him the ball at the right times.

Secondly, his contract is up and he’ll likely be demanding too much for us to re-sign him now that we have Rudolph trained to take over the #1 role.

Shawn – I agree. I wanted us to take Taylor Mays when our pick came around…and then came around again the next day after the trade. Hindsight says that the pick couldn’t have been much worse than what Cook has become so far.

I learned earlier today that Mays was traded for a 2013 7th-round pick. That disappointed me. Even though he has failed to produce so far, I think a 7th-round pick would have been a very safe bet on a potential upgrade to our porous group of safeties.

I get tired of hearing the Vikings need to quit bringing in washed up or has been players. 2009 we had a great team. 1998 we had a great team both with QBs that were from other teams. We just got beat in one game. Just like the packers got beat today this sunday. The Giants play them next sunday maybe the Giants lose. 2010 we played poorly as we didn’t prepare well and poor coaching. 2011 less preparation and even more poor play. Bringing in McNabb had nothing to do with how well this team did. We weren’t prepared and the coaches over estimated how well they could prepare the team in short notice.

James is projected to go by the early 3rd round, so I’m voting a big fat NO. We have a first round and a second round RB on the team. Both are clearly starting quality players. The last thing we need to do is waste an early draft pick trying to strengthen up one of our strongest positions.

  562. By Parody on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

Fox is saying that part of the problem with Pagac is that he wanted the defense to be much more aggressive than Frazier’s cover-2 scheme would allow. Caused some disention between coaches and players.

They’re making it sound like Singletary is the favorite to be the replacement, so I can only hope that the article I read about Singletary is based solely on the poor reporting of poor reporters, as Mike B has suggested.

@Parody The rub is that Frazier started as a DB coach and thinks the players we have in the secondary are good players. Thus no improvement. Frazier is a defensive coach and even as Head Coach he leads the Defensive scheme. So of course there is a rub with a strong minded DC if he wanted to make too many changes. It is probably possible that the Secondary coach will not loose his job. Frazier has blinders when it comes to areas he’s confortable with or his friends.

One QB has a Center, 2 OTs, 1 end, and an RB.
The other QB has 2 guards, 1 end and an RB

How fun is that! You have to throw a lot of laterals, but don’t worry we throw them overhand.

  596. By Shawn on Jan 15, 2012 | Reply

I think the draft guys like Mel Kiper Jr … have really been pretty accurate on their top 5 guys in recent years. Its more likely that Kalil and Luck become good to great than it is for them to fail. Claiborne is in the top 5 as well. so if Kalil is gone IMO we get Claiborne … no chancing the next guy at LT but take the more sure thing at a position of extreme need. Especially if Griffin moves on and Cook goes to jail. Claiborne is a serious need

I wanted to see what reactions I’d get. The only negative on Kalil that I can see is his size. He really needs to bulk up his frame of 295 to at least 310LBS. His weight right now will really hurt him.

So if the editors of the books that are being used to instruct graduate clässes are allowed to ignore such blunders, it is asinine to think that you can expect something better from a group of daily bloggers.

Second or third page, I had to stop– being in college in Ohio, I got around the state a lot– partying and such.
I had to read and reread– the book said the resort was north of Cincy, east of Columbus and west of Dayton ( I paraphrase a bit) – at any rate, the location was geographically impossible— and that goes beyond a typo. I never read the book. I still wonder how many others caught that -

Realest – I agree with your disregard for Blackmon. The third round still looks like a strong bet for us to get a decent WR to support the cast of Percy, Rudolph, Jenkins and Peterson.

I disagree about Ingram though. While we will need to address LBs this offseason, I don’t think that it should receive consideration in the first round of the draft. The first two rounds need to address LT and CB, preferably in that order. Anything else would be mortgaging one or both of the team’s biggest needs this offseason.

We already did that this last year when we grabbed a QB and TE in the first two rounds, even though OL and DB were the biggest weaknesses of the team the prior year. The longer we ignore our weaknesses, the longer we will be feeding from the bottom of the NFL.

We don’t need to score MORE points – it didn’t do us any good back when we set the season scoring record, it didn’t do GB or NO any good this year.

We need to stop the other team from scoring so many points. That takes a good defense.

We needed to cut McKinnie, he was a constant problem and one that was festering into a larger issue every year. He may be better with the Ravens, but it because the Vikes gave him a wake up call with some unemployment issues. He hurt us this season for sure, but it needed to happen.

Mike R – Kalil and Minnifield look to be solid options for rounds 1 and 2. I’ve noticed 3-WRs who should be available by the time we pick in the 3rd round, Jones (North Car), Hill (GA Tech) and Streeter (Miami). They all have the height and speed that we should be looking for, so I’d just hope they pick the one with the best team player attitude.

Defense reigned supreme this weekend in the playoffs for sure. “Drive for Show and Putt for Dough” I guess – Everyone loves a great offfense but defense is the little thing that some teams forget about. I was hoping for a Cruz Salsa dance in Green Bay – but I will settle for my own dance of joy. With Pagac gone now officially I hope they pursue Tucker more aggresively, he is young and has a lot of energy and ideals. My hopes for the Draft are still to have RG3 fall to us so we can parlay the pick into more picks for us. I think that would mean though that the Rams will take Kalil from us. If Kalil is there though take him for sure and I would be fine taking Defense the rest of the way.

Good point Northwoods! Look at the teams still in the playoffs. They all have superior defenses. The Ravens and 49ers are 3rd and 4th in YPG, and 3rd and 2nd in PPG. While the Patriots, 49ers and Giants are in the top-5 for turnovers. Meanwhile, the Vikings’ highest score in any of these categories is 21st.

If the phrase “defenses win championships” is true, I would expect to see the 49ers beat the Ravens in the Super Bowl.

    @Sandiamond,

There are a lot of problems with this Vikings team.

Surely we need a DT, no one can argue about it.

Spielman may actually take an LB in the first round to help out the new 3-4 they seem to be planning.

Kicker may be the next problem, and don’t underestimate his role. By the time we get the other parts on the Vikings team set, Longwell will be too old to be effective. Just like what has happened at DT with Pat Williams.

This team has been lacking OLs and DBs since the beginning of the 2010 season. It’s becoming a CHRONIC PROBLEM. So first things first, obtain OFFENSIVE LINEMEN and DEFENSIVE BACKS.

If the Vikings don’t do this NOW, we get to be another DETROIT CITY LIONS of the 1990′s and 2000s. 6-10 again and again.

  693. By sandiamond on Jan 16, 2012 | Reply

There is the saying, any team can beat any team at any given time, and though it is true it takes a great Defense to win at any time. If you cannot stop a team from scoring how can you win? Get a Defense then a offensive line and then the Vikings will be winners now.

    Have a great day everyone.

Most bloggers know about the effect of the coach. Some bloggers don’t. This post is for them!

At every level, high school, college, and the pros we see it.

Winning Coaches appear to be geniuses until they start losing, then they are “idiots or lack energy, etc., until they win again.

Losing Coaches are called “idiots” or worse until they win. If they start losing again it is because “the game has passed them by” or they are “too old, can’t relate to the modern player.”

USUALLY TALENT WINS OUT. The players determine the outcome of games much more than the coaches.

FRAZIER is an outstanding coach in a difficult situation. He will smell much better once the Vikings start winning.

  696. By sandiamond on Jan 16, 2012 | Reply

Fred with some many holes how can we add more wrinkles and shift to a 3-4 now? Doesn’t make sense for conservative Frazier to do it in the offseason. If we shift then yes we would need a LB instead of a DT

We have some weak areas that MUST BE TAKEN CARE OF IMMEDIATELY.

LOOK AT YOUR DETROIT CITY LIONS of the 1990s/2000s. They let their offensive line go because of injuries, deaths, etc. in the 1990′s, and as a result had a makeshift line for nearly 20 years. DETROIT CITY LIONS

all the more reason not to shift now Fred!! both Hendersons are free agents and we don’t want Spielman to be thinking linebackers heavy early in the draft

  700. By Parody on Jan 16, 2012 | Reply

The Patriots are very similar to the Packers. Both teams are tied for the most turnovers caused by their defense, and are all but tied for the most yards allowed, (NE 411.1, GB 411.6). Although the Ravens don’t have as good of an offense as the Giants, they have a superior defense in many categories, so I’m inclined to guess that they’ll be able to defeat the Patriots next week.

It’s a bit tougher of a guess for the 49ers and the Giants, but the 49ers have arguably the best defense in the NFL and they have homefield advantage, so I think they’ll be the victors in the NFC.

  701. By Frederick Jones on Jan 16, 2012 | Reply

    @Sandiamond,

I never said I was for the 3-4 defense. But the Vikings are a desperate club, and may do anything.

I could see them take the vaunted RG3 or Luck as well in round 1, and keep him.

It would be out of character for Spielman to take Offensive Linemen and Defensive Backs in the first round. He is a “Hollywood” type and goes for the big-name guys who are of course QBs, RBs, WRs, LBs, etc.

  702. By DRS on Jan 16, 2012 | Reply

We need it all, and now are the time to do it. Let’s get it done in the draft, free agency and from within the Vikings. This is the time to clean house and dump the trash and be ready for the new season. BTW Let’s get a new house for the team to play in and stop playing the power game in the legislature.

Good day one and all, the Green Bay slackers are one and out. See you all later.

  703. By Parody on Jan 16, 2012 | Reply

Manning was able to avoid turnovers to beat the only strength of the Packers defense, but the 49ers defense has strengths all across the board. I think it will be too much for Eli, and he’ll lose the battle.

    @Parody,

Unfortunately I have missed all the playoff games so far, but it seems as though the Giants are on a roll. We saw it last year with the Packers (who were not that good, but were hot at the right time.). This year it may be the Giants.

That is who I am picking, (much to my dismay and lack of information about the playoff teams).

Fred – I agree about the DLine. We have Jared Allen and Kevin Williams supported by 3-Quality 4th-round picks who should all be up to speed in the NFL now. Maybe we don’t need to worry about the big run stopping DL quite yet. We’d be better off getting some DBs who can cover their guys long enough to allow the DL to give any QB a few bruises.

Frederick Jones, I like that saying as well, when I was a D-Line-Man, I did not get the glory, but I sure did like pounding them over rated QB’s and Running backs. This was when I live in the Lake Vile area and played for Farmington. Now I know it is not Collage and / or the NFL, but it sure was fun.

    @RICK SPIELMAN,

The Vikings are only average at Special Teams, Defensive Line, Linebackers, Running Backs (because of injuries, Wide Receiver, Tight Ends (if we lose Shiancoe), and Quarterback.

No one can argue that we don’t need help in any of those areas!

Offensive Line and D-Backs are among the weakest units in the league for the Vikings. HOW CAN ANY TEAM WIN WITH GLARING WEAKNESSES IN ANY AREA. YOU HAVE TO BE AT LEAST AVERAGE.

So maintain or try to maintain the other areas while OVERHAULING the DBs and OLs.

  712. By sandiamond on Jan 16, 2012 | Reply

Parody those 3 lineman are tying up sunday final roster space and not allowing other rookies a chance to play. All we need is 1 demolishing DT and that would allow for minus -1 in the needs for DB’s

  713. By Parody on Jan 16, 2012 | Reply

Sandia – FYI those 3 linemen are Robison, Griffen and Ballard. Robison was one of the better sackers in the NFL this year. Griffen is proving to be a beast, and a steal in the 4th-round. The Vikings just need to get creative on how to use him and Robison in the same packages. Personally, I’d like to see a Nickel or Dime package that substitutes Griffen for the MLB, moving him around to blitz all over the line.

Finally, Ballard is the only rookie from the group. He was projected to go early in the 3rd round, so he has some obvious value too. I think he has similar traits to Kevin Williams, which would make him a good option as the 2nd DT on passing downs, something that we’ll see a lot in our division.

Guion, Evans and Ayodele are all later picks than 4th-round. Ayodele was undrafted, Evans was a 7th rounder and Guion was a 5th rounder. I agree that none of them are proving to be starting quality at the NT position, but Ayodele is still on the roster for one more year. I don’t know that it would be a good idea to draft a DT this year. I’d rather see the team get a bruising Pat Williams type of player in free agency. We have bigger needs at other areas of the team, that if we draft a starting NT, we’ll have to spend an early pick that could be used to fill the more glaring problems.

  723. By Parody on Jan 16, 2012 | Reply

Ayodele has 2 more years on the contract he signed with the Vikings, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Vikings go the customary route of drafting a DT in the 4th round. A nice big guy who can compete with Ayodele for a couple of years, and then take over as the permanent replacement/upgrade when he’s ready.

John i can answer your question we are going to draft Justin Blackmon out of Oklahoma State WR. He is amazing and we suck. We need to make some good free agent signings this off-season so we can get better. First get rid of Ponder we never should have drafted that fool in the first place. Go get someone we can work with and that can run a offense, Manning for instance i know he isn’t going to be a Colt so go get him he is good and can still play. So focus on DBs and go get a DE that can play opposite of Jerad Allen. We need to get rid of Erin Henderson and find someone else because he killed our LBing group. So focus on these positions and we will do well.
