does anyone know anything about our def coordinator position? has pagac been officially fired? the site hasnt posted anything and NFL.com has mentioned a few interviews but thats it. I hope we arent pulling a dolphins move on pagac like they did with sparano.

  5. By Parody on Jan 12, 2012 | Reply

I don’t know why Pagac hasn’t been officially fired yet. It’s clear that the team is not happy with his performance, and it’s only a matter of time until we hire his replacement. It’s starting to look more likely that Singletary will be the new DC, as other prospects are signing with different teams. This move seems to make the most sense since Singletary was given the title of Assistant Head Coach when he signed with the team.

However, I would like to see the team make some serious offers to other coaches. There appears to be more qualified people available yet, but they’re disappearing fast.

I would say the stadium situation and the uncertainty of the whole “Minnesota” Viking future plays a major role in not being able to recruit talent and coaches to the “Minnesota” Vikings. Politicians are hurting this organization in many ways.

Anyone that has followed the Jeff Fisher coaching recruitment knows that Jeff was certain to pick the Rams over the Dolphins. There has been talks that Fisher is now leaning towards the Dolphins because he’s not interested in joining a team that may end up relocating.

Would you want to take a job that might end in 1 year for many reasons? Everyone knows Frazier has 1 year left to be 8-8 or fired. No one knows if the Minnesota politicians will built a world cla’ss Football facility or just do as little as possible to shut the Viking organization up or do nothing and let them leave.

These are just random thoughts I dont suggest any of them to be factual but an opinion of an outside observer.

    Pagac 2011 DC … 21st ypg … 31st ppg … 26th pass D … 11th run D

    Frazier 2010 DC .. 8th YPG … 18th ppg … 10th pass D … 9th run D
    Frazier 2009 DC .. 6th YPG … 10th ppg … 19th pass D … 2nd run D
    Frazier 2008 DC .. 6th YPG … 13th ppg … 18th pass D … 1st run D

Leslie Frazier really is a good coach. He really had the same talent plus Pat Williams and Madieu Williams. He had us in the top 10 … I think Frazier is really had a rough go at his first Head Coaching gig. Collapsed dome. Brett Favre drama. more Injuries in the last 2 seasons than I remember since Denny Greens day.

I like Frazier and am still a believer. This is one he11 of a storm in Minnesota Viking history. Frazier may be the cool calm collected level head guy we need.

  11. By Parody on Jan 12, 2012 | Reply

Shawn – If Madieu Williams is worth mentioning as a loss, then so is Ben Leber. He was another defender who was on all of Leslie’s defenses, but was gone when Pagac took over.

I don’t think we lost much without Leber or Madieu, but Pat’s disappearance had an effect. The team never found a real replacement for him, so we fought the entire season without a true NT to plug the middle of the line. So that makes for one more position that the team needs to worry about moving into next year.

  12. By Spence on Jan 12, 2012 | Reply

Madieu Williams was Awful. Absolutely Dreadful!

  13. By NovaScotiaVike on Jan 12, 2012 | Reply

This is certainly the roughest road that the Vikings have traveled since I began watching them in /68. But the Saints went through decades of futility, hurricane Katrina, playing “home” games everywhere except New Orleans, and they end up winning a Super Bowl. The people of Louisiana had a lot to do with that. It’s time the people of Minnesota showed the same spirit.

  14. By Shawn on Jan 12, 2012 | Reply

I think Madieu is worth mentioning somewhere he went from a starter in a consistantly poor secondary to a guy that couldnt get 10 tackles on a REALLY GOOD 49ers defense.

The mentioning isnt so much about the loss but about the fact that our talent at safety is VERY comparable to Madieu “I cant get more than 9 tackles for anyone except the Vikings” Williams. It was shorter in Eqyptian.

Our secondary is awfull and I forgot about Leber who was solid but for the money and age Erin Henderson wasnt much of a fall off.

I also forgot Ray Edwards … who might be slightly better in Run D but again for the money Robison is slightly better overall.

Pat Williams was a huge loss and I think we may have seen the end of a few of those rotating replacements.

Why fire Pagac? He may not be a great DC but he has been a solid linebackers coach. I think if Singletary gets the DC position… Pagac (and the Vikings) would be silly not to slide him back to his old position as linebackers coach.

Pagac was a tight end in his playing days… so maybe the Vikings are also looking at Pagac as a possible DL coach?

  25. By Parody on Jan 12, 2012 | Reply

Shawn – Brian showed that he is arguably better than Ray. This year, his stats were very comparable to Ray’s average as a starter for the Vikings, and that’s without the help of a force like Pat Williams taking the pressure off of Brian’s right shoulder. This year, Robison was easily twice as productive as Ray in every category. Granted, Ray was with a new system, he was too full of himself. He never referred to Robison by name, simply as “my backup”. Such as “They gave a big contract to my backup, so I don’t feel that they appreciate my talent in MN anymore”. (Message from Edwards in the offseason when he started shopping himself to other teams).

I believe there was a year where Allen, Kevin and Pat Williams were all voted to the Pro Bowl, but Ray was left behind. Still, he had the gall to act like he’s an NFL Superstar. The only reason Ray was any good was because offenses had to ignore him in order to block the 3-probowlers breathing down their neck.

Parody … I think I said Robison was overall better. Some of your argument could be used on Robison as well. Like Jarred Allens 22 sacks and Robison only managed 8. So IMO they are pretty equal giving the edge to Robison because of the price tag and possitive attitude.

  31. By NovaScotiaVike on Jan 12, 2012 | Reply

  33. By Parody on Jan 12, 2012 | Reply

Okay, I just confirmed it. In 2009, Ray Edwards had the best stats of any year in his career, with 51 tackles (43 solo) with 8.5 sacks, and 1 blocked kick (All career bests). That year, Jared Allen and Pat Williams were reserves for the Pro Bowl, and Kevin Williams was a starter.

Meanwhile, Robison had his best year in his first as a starter with, 44 tackles, (27 Solo), and 8 sacks. That was all without the help of a Pro Bowl Pat Williams, and with Kevin Williams fighting suspension and an injury in at least the first half of the year. Diagnosis, Brian is the better DE.

Shawn – I had a very similar idea about Griffen. He’s good enough that he should be able to make it as an OLB. But I think he’d be better used as a 3-4 OLB. That would require a change to the defensive scheme that I don’t think Frazier is ready to start implementing.

    56- Michael Boireau
    88- Doug Chapman
    106- Antonio Wilson

Thats actually one option that I havent heard mentioned before. What if Frazier just takes his job into his own hands and starts calling plays and acting as DC? I like that option. Leslie Frazier is better than all the DCs hes interviewed and statistically thats proven. Spagnuolo might be better IDK that for sure but I do know Spags had a more talented secondary than weve had.

    @ Viking ology

Mel Tucker turned down an offer to become the Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator and will remain in the same position with the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to ESPN.

Tucker, 40, interviewed with the Vikings earlier this week after his contract with the Jaguars had expired.

Tucker finished the season as Jacksonville’s interim coach after Jack Del Rio was fired. He interviewed for the team’s head coaching job last week.

Jacksonville hired Mike Mularkey on Tuesday night and he quickly said he wanted to keep Tucker on his coaching staff.

Jacksonville finished 5-11 this season, but Tucker’s defense ranked sixth in the NFL as he took over making the play calls. In 2010, Jacksonville’s defense finished 28th out of 32 teams.

The Vikings have now interviewed former Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris and Tucker for a job that is still held by Fred Pagac. Morris did not get an offer from the Vikings and on Wednesday was named defensive backs coach for the Washington Redskins.

The Vikings were expected to interview assistant head coach and linebackers coach Mike Singletary for the defensive coordinator’s job as well. Pagac is likey to be fired or moved to a new position on the staff.

I would say Catholic Ponder was a rookie that was under pressure every time he tried to throw so IMO its not fair to judge him. Webb had a worse rating in his rookie season than Ponder. Ponder IMO has potential to win Super Bowls if surrounded by a TEAM.

He cant run an offense when he doesnt have time to run a play he only has time to run. And yes Webb can run better than Ponder.

Your point about C. Ponder in his rookie year was correct.

The Vikings have two very good young QBs. Certainly one will emerge as
    a starter.

The contributions of the offensive line are highly underrated. Bud Grant’s teams always had a good O Line and D Line.

In addition Bud Grant/Jim Finks/MIke Lynn often took Offensive Linemen in the first three rounds. He actually had FOUR STRAIGHT YEARS OF TAKING AT LEAST ONE OFFENSIVE LINEMAN IN THE FIRST THREE ROUNDS AND THOSE WERE THE DAYS OF 12-17 PICKS!!!

Dan Bizzaro said something silly on the radio today…

He said that you should “pick the best athlete no matter what your situation.”

There are MANY problems with that attitude:

    1. You might wind up with a lot of Quarterbacks on your team, and have
trouble putting 11 people on the field at times!

    2. Who said the Quarterback is always the best athlete. Bobby Bell was
probably the best all-around athlete in NFL history, and he was a OLB.

    3. The best athlete might be someone like Renaldo Nehemiah a WR for the 49ers,
and he wound up being just “good,” in the NFL. Tommie C. Smith was an incredible athlete, he ripped a hammy and was never seen again!

    4. Why would you pick a defensive linemen when you already had Eller, Marshall, Page, and Larson? Not thinking can get you into trouble Mr. Spielman!!!

    5. What about the TEAM Danny boy?

It’s good to have an overly-optimistic guy in the group to counter the ugly realism that is our team. Hopefully Spielman will put Fraziers lockerroom friendships aside and fire the guys that need firing, regardless of how “great a guy” they are. Like, oh, I don’t know… the defensive secondary. Just scrolled back a bit and saw Spence name Jared and Adrian as the #1 and #2 players on this team. If there is one guy on this squad I’d not let go, it’s Harvin. He’s easily the most versatile playmaker on this squad. Then J Allen…

I would’ve liked to see the team trade Peterson before the 2011 season began. Don’t get me wrong, I think the guy is amazing, but having the best RB in a passing league is like having the prettiest pig in town… who cares? If we could have traded him for some talent at DB and OL, I’d have been happy to wish him well with his new contending team. Of course, now, his chances of getting all the way back aren’t great regardless of his work ethic, so his trade value is somewhere around a carton of smokes and a spent lottery ticket…

Since the ice fishing tournament had to be postponed because of the danger involved, why doesn’t the Red Cross or some other organization set up an “emergency reaction clinic” to teach people how best to react if someone falls through the thin ice? For example, they could get “celebrities” like Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews to fall through the ice, and the person who is able to hit them with the most rocks before they drown wins season tickets.

I’d keep them both, and let them fight it out in the preseason, Webb is the better athlete, Ponder is better at reading defenses,I like to see a competition in training camp.

I hope he’s not wasted talent, because he had some excellent games this year, if he doesn’t go to jail, which I don’t think he will, the sky’s the limit , he’s tall, quick and a good cover CB.

They both probably have their own niche in the clubhouse, which could prove detrimental.

Chris Cook is a thug with some talent. Bad attitude, bad teamate that has shown some flashes of potential. I hope we fix our secondary quick so we can cut him. But for now he is probably the best corner being paid by the organization.

Patriots will beat the feel good story, big, Pats aren’t going to lose to Tebow in Foxboro, Pats by 10 or more, hands down !!!!

If you looked at a number of factors, you really would not have been so surprised that Denver won against Pittsburgh. This week-end will be a surprise–

Why havent we interviewed former Jaguars HC / former Viking MLB Jack Del Rio for DC ?

DelRio was the 2002 DC for the Carolina Panthers and heres his defensive ranks

    2nd YPG … 5th PPG … 8th rush D … 4th pass D

DelRio also has 68 wins as an NFL head coach … including a 12 win and 11 win season

Del Rio began his coaching career with the New Orleans Saints in 1997 as the Strength and Conditioning coach. In 1999, he accepted a position with the Baltimore Ravens as their linebackers coach. He is in part credited for the success of the Ravens’ defense, particularly the 2000 Ravens’ defense. After the 2001 season, he was named defensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers. In his first season as defensive coordinator, he led them to the second best defense in the league that season.

Vikes need to rebuild!!! Massive trades and Stock up on picks. Pick Best QB, and then deal him later for whoever is desperate and willing to trade proven needed talent. Get a minimum wage team, and support Greece, where the Gov’t is the economy…Shawn…

@Shawn, you might be right that Cook is the best CB on the Vikings, at least as regarding to covering WRs.

Winfield could return strong. Sherels, and Burton are up and coming.

This probably points to the need for a safety and a cornerback as VERY STRONG NEEDS for the Vikings, equal to that of the OFFENSIVE LINE.

    Hey Titus,

I like the Be Sane and Serious moniker. It reminds me of the old days when the Vikings were an NFL power!!!
