Carter, Doleman Named Finalists For The Pro Football Hall of Fame

Posted by Ryan Cardinal on January 7, 2012 – 1:29 pm

The NFL has announed that former Vikings Cris Carter and Chris Doleman are finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, class of 2012, which will be announced on Saturday, Feb. 4, the day before Super Bowl XLVI.

Carter and Doleman, who were teammates in Minnesota from 1990-93, were both finalists a year ago as well.

Carter led the club in receiving 10 consecutive seasons (1991-2000), started more games than any other WR in team history and holds the Vikings record with 40 100-yard receiving games.  He’s an 8-time Pro Bowler and 4-time All-Pro was inducted into Vikings Ring of Honor in 2003.

Doleman was the Vikings single-season sack king after registering 21.0 sacks in 1989, but of course had that record bested by Jared Allen this past season.  In 10 seasons as a Viking, had 96.5 sacks and tallied 150.5 career sacks, good for 4th all-time.

This past fall, the Hall of Fame’s Selection Committee chose the 26 semifinalists from the previously announced list of 105 preliminary nominees. The list of 26 semifinalists was reduced by mail ballot to 15 modern-era finalists which were announced today.

The final step comes on Feb. 4, when the 44-member Selection Committee meets in person to discuss and evaluate the merits of each of the 15 modern-era and the two senior candidates. An independent accounting firm tallies the voting that day to determine the new class of enshrinees.

Although there is no set number of Enshrinees for any Hall of Fame Class, the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s current ground rules do stipulate that between four and seven new members will be selected each year. No more than 5 modern-era nominees can be elected in a given year.

    Mike W., it seems that a vast number of Viking fans would like to know more about the reasoning behind Karl Dunbar’s dismissal. As the “insider” of this team, do you not feel that it is your responsibility to keep these loyal fans up-to-date on happenings such as these? Or do you feel justified in only reporting the “good” news?

  7. By NovaScotiaVike on Jan 7, 2012 | Reply

    If your answer to these questions is along the lines of ” I don’t have any more information on that subject”, you are either being untruthful or not doing your job.

  8. By NovaScotiaVike on Jan 7, 2012 | Reply

    By keeping us in the dark and forcing us to get all of our information from other sources, such as the NFL Network and NFL.com, it would seem to me that you are doing the fans a great injustice, forcing us to speculate on why this firing occured.

    Nova, considering the quality of reporting here, do you really need to probe? Remember, we played Washington when we were playing Atlanta (or was it the other way around?). We have our head coach in Adrian Peterson. The inactive players will be announced at 10 PM when it was a Sunday morning article. Peeked was used piqued, or was it peaked for peeked? And on and on…

    Maybe I am overly critical, but I must say, if I made that many errors, I would want someone to point it out. Why? So I can improve. Seems the writers here have no incentive to improve. The whole organization appears mired in a ho hum, it’s good enough mentality– that does not win championships. Cut off what is not producing and bring in some new fire — from top to bottom!

    Please tell us why the vikings are losers. Oh wait….. I already know. Our defensive pass coverage was garbage all year and our o line was trash. Fire the d coordinator because he made us worse… Why would anyone use EJ as a deep pass coverage. Exotic defensive schemes is how you confuse these elite QBs that we are seeing. Morris could be just what we need. Cover 2 is only one type of defense.. Unfortunetly it is the only defense our coordinator wanted to play.. How stupid is that.. I would rather blitz every play then drop two safety’s.

    Heres how bad our secondary is. Madieu Williams our high priced 2 and 1/2 year starting Safety. Couldnt get 10 tackles for the 49ers and he started 3 games with them and was active for 15 games.

    Something is wrong when our organization looks at Madieu and sees 4.5 million dollar safety and he cant even get 10 tackles somewhere else. Hes only 30.

    Deion was an entertainer. When he was a 49er he got an INT on the Falcons sideline and ran down the sideline doing his high step thing just looking at the whole Falcon organization as he ran 60 yards for a TD. Classic. He wasnt looking at a possible tackler he was just looking at his old team.

    The report indicates that Mel Tucker and Mike Singletary are both going to be considered for the job as well. That would indicate a strong liklihood to switch to a 3-4 defense, since this is the specialty of both those coaches. (Spagnuolo has been described as a blitz heavy 4-3 coach, which is still a big improvement from the cover-2 scheme that we’ve suffered through for all too long).

    In 2005 Tucker entered the National Football League with the Cleveland Browns. He coached defensive backs from 2005–2007 and was promoted to defensive coordinator in the 2008 season following the firing of Todd Grantham.[5][6] Under Tucker, Cleveland consistently ranked fifth in the league, with the defense making 73 interceptions.[3] After the firing of Browns head coach Romeo Crennel, Tucker was replaced by Rob Ryan.[7]

    “They’ve been so good to me here I don’t think they would do it without talking to me. I want to end my career as a defensive end,” Allen said.

    That quote was in response to a potential switch to a 3-4 defense, which would turn Allen into a blitzing OLB. It looks like he’ll be wanting a trade if the team does decide to go in that direction.

    The article also reported that Cedric Griffin, who has a contract through 2013, has expressed interest in finding a new team. Allen’s trade value would be high, but I’d be surprised if we can land a 4th-rounder for Cedric.

    Mel Tucker defensive rankings as DC

    2011 Jags D … 6th
    2010 Jags D … 28th
    2009 Jags D … 23rd

    2008 Jags without Tucker … 17th

    2008 Browns D … 26th

    Hmmm … Ill do Spagnuolo next

    Okay, I didn’t look at those stats, but at least they showed a massive improvement in his 3rd year. Maybe it just took that long for him to rebuild the team to fit his scheme. What impressed me about him was the passing stats, keeping his teams in the top ten for big plays allowed and interceptions in every year.

    Demetrius Bell (BUF) – OT – Bell is another under-the-radar player capable of protecting the blindside and is a vital piece to the Bills’ offense with an expiring contract. Though he’s an above average pass protector, he’s an even better run blocker for the left side. The Bills have some work to be done to keep all of the pieces together, which could allow Bell to slip through the cracks into free agency.

  134. By Parody on Jan 7, 2012 | Reply

    I just checked out that mock draft of yours Shawn, and I don’t really care for it. First of all, I think we need a tackle in the first round, and I wouldn’t want the team to take a chance on a guy like the one described in the second round there. Secondly, I doubt Alshon Jeffery is going to drop that far. Most mock drafts I have seen still have him ging in the first half of th first roud. Also, I think that IF we can get Cleveland’s two first round picks, we shouldn’t stop trading there.

    I would trade the #4 pick to move back once more and get a first and second out of the deal, then get the second or third best OT with our first overall pick. Then you can grab a CB/WR with the second 1st round pick, CB/WR/S with the first second round pick, and CB/WR/S/NT with the second second round pick, and stick a LB into the mix of interested positions in the third round.

    An absolute stud CB, with Claiborne in the lineup, our secondary will instantly be improved. He possesses elite speed, elite ball skills, elite awareness, and elite coverage skills. He has to work on not peeking in the backfield as much, and he is only a decent tackler.

    it still makes me giggle when i hear about his “ball skills”

    Shawn – I would’t be mad if we drafted Claiborne either, and I’d probably have his jersey on its way to my house within a week of the draft. I just think that we could address our needs better than that. You have to protect the QB first. Our line is too incompetant to pull that off, so we need to get a top-teir 1st rounder who can turn things around.

    This year’s CB class is supposed to be pretty deep, and decent DBs can usually be found in the 2nd round anyways, so I’d prefer to address that need later on.

    So our secondary should be better than its ever been …

  152. By Parody on Jan 7, 2012 | Reply

    Until we find out who’s going to be running the defense and the scheme he’ll be using, elite ball skills are pointless. If they stick with the Tampa two defense, then drafting someone with elite ball skills will be a wasted pick. Darren Sharper had elite ball skills, but we never got to see much of it in MN because Frazier’s defense didn’t take advantage of that. Then he went on to a new team and led the league in INTs.

    Well, Payton adjusted brilliantly at half-time like he always does. But this game may be won in the last two minutes.

    Soccer would be watchable if they mined the field. All mines would be unknown to each team. A very innocent, routine, boring play would become a “fan favorite” if the diving, gutless soccer player blew up.

    Im all for protecting the Quarterbacks. You have to protect your biggest asset. Why is the NFL not protecting special teams players? Because nobody pays to see those guys.

  248. By Parody on Jan 7, 2012 | Reply

    I agree, that hands to the head was pretty weak. Just like many of the calls where a hand grazed the facemask, or so horsecollar calls I’ve seen recently. If these guys are that concerned about getting injured, they should find a different profession…one that pays a little less, like the rest of us are forced to.

  249. By Parody on Jan 7, 2012 | Reply

    Roughing the kicker, fair catch rule, no lining up in front of the center on special teams plays, 35-yardline kickoff rule, no tight blocking formations on kickoffs, all kicks need to have at least 4(?) players on both sides of the ball….yep, definitely sounds like they’re not protecting special teams players…

The rare talent in this draft other than QB is Morris Cliaborne and Will Blackmon, Each are worthy of a high first round pick.

    You’re probably right that the management system is to blame for Chilly’s demise, but the way he personally handled his portion of it was dispicable. Someone decided to trade a 3rd round pick for Moss. Most of us loved that decision. Then Chilly, all on his own, made the decision to cut Moss. That’s like winning a 15-million dollar house in a divorse settlement, then demolishing it! I supported him until then, but I don’t care how close he got us to the Super Bowl. From the last few games of that season, through his firing, his decision making hurt the team wosre and worse straight up to the end of it.

  372. By Frederick Jones on Jan 8, 2012 | Reply

    @Parody and Shawn,

    I have never been smart enough to figure out why fans complain about the play calling.

    My reaction is always that if the play(s) had worked you couldn’t say it was the play calling. It’s a great play if it works, it’s a bad play if it doesn’t work!

    Right?

  373. By Frederick Jones on Jan 8, 2012 | Reply

    Bryant Mckinney went to Miami, sorry I meant to say USC in that post!!

  374. By Parody on Jan 8, 2012 | Reply

    Sometimes it’s just a lucky play if it works. Case in point would have been IF the Falcons had converted that 4th down today with a QB dive, 5 blockers, and 7-defenders who saw an empty backfield.

  375. By Parody on Jan 8, 2012 | Reply

    Okay, so we’re only interested in linemen if they’re from USC….I guess that makes a little sense…

  376. By Parody on Jan 8, 2012 | Reply

    Fred – How many great QBs were still throwing below a QB Rating of 80 in their 5th year? I still doubt that Jackson is going to be anything more than an average starter at best. Regardless, the fans never accepted him in MN, often booing when he stepped on the field, so he wouldn’t have wanted to stay here anyways.

  377. By Frederick Jones on Jan 8, 2012 | Reply

    @Parody,

    But if you say the problem with the Vikings Offense is the play-calling you mean the sequence of plays they call.

    The 49ers called something like the first 21 plays of the game. That’s probably one of the reasons Bill Walsh is labeled a genius. I say he was lucky to have the personnel to pull off such a thing.

    People have said that both Childress and Musgrave were horrible play callers. I think it’s the personnel. Maybe they picked the wrong personnel. or did a bad job coaching in practice.

    It could certainly also be the plays, but to me this is unlikely. It’s the execution of the plays. Which could still be coaching.

  378. By Frederick Jones on Jan 8, 2012 | Reply

    @Parody,

    No I was just commenting on the fact Kalil is from USC, just like Ron Yary.

  379. By Parody on Jan 8, 2012 | Reply

    Sorry, that should have said in their 6th year. The only years Jackson had a rating above 80 were when he was backing up old guys who took us to the playoffs that year. In 2010, with the same offensive line, Jackson had a rating of 63.9 compared to our rookie’s rating of 70.1 this year.

    @Parody or Shawn,

    I would like to hear more about the play calling bit.

  382. By Parody on Jan 8, 2012 | Reply

    Fred – I wouldn’t lay the blame on any one of those alone. I think all three have contributed largely to our demise. Blocking (personnel) was horrible, their ability diminished throughout the year which argues bad coaching, and the playcalling was very suspect most of the time.

    Musgrave looked to be the weakest link added to this coaching staff before the year began. He failed a couple of times as an OC before joining the Vikings. I was timidly optimistic about the decision, however, because of his success with Matt Ryan while he was the QB coach. The offense was just plain out horrind, so I have no more optimistism remaining for the current OC.

  383. By Frederick Jones on Jan 8, 2012 | Reply

    I mean I have just never been able to follow the reasoning behind the complaints. It seems like the play callers can only do a good job if their team wins.

    Since the Vikings have only won 9 games in the last two years I have read, or heard a lot about the ineffective play calling.

    There is something I’m missing there or it is a silly practice by fans.

  384. By Frederick Jones on Jan 8, 2012 | Reply

    @Parody,

    It is easier to call it a bad play than to see that Sullivan missed his block.

    We fans don’t get to see the films. lol

  385. By Parody on Jan 8, 2012 | Reply

    Fred – One example about the playcalling is the Blazer packages. Webb would take over for a play or two, and get beaten back. It looked like we would try a trick play, but all I ever saw was a QB draw. With the talent on the field, the play calling needed to be more creative than that. They also seemed to use the blazer package right when Ponder started to find a rhythm, busting up whatever rhythm he might have attained.

    Another complaint I have about playcalling is overusing a successful play. More often than not, a good 6+ yard run was followed up with another run at the same gap. This was almost always stopped immediately. It’s the whole fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me mantra. You need to mix things up to attain continued success.

  386. By Parody on Jan 8, 2012 | Reply

    Fred – You’re right about that. I never pay attention to the OL during a play, so I can’t pinpoint on my own who the biggest failures are. However, I do know that the blocking has been very poor. That’s why I refuse to blame only one area. Everybody underperformed.

    But obvious playcalls are hard to make successful even with a pro-bowl group on the field.

  387. By Frederick Jones on Jan 8, 2012 | Reply

    I suspect Dunbar got fired because of something he said.

  388. By Parody on Jan 8, 2012 | Reply

    Possibly, but he could have been released for other reasons too, which we’ve speculated on earlier. I sent Mike a mailbag question this morning asking if he can give us some insight on it, but I doubt any answer he gives will qualify as an acceptable explanation.

  389. By Frederick Jones on Jan 8, 2012 | Reply

    @Parody,

    Thank you for your explanation on the Blazer and running the same play.

    The reverses with Percy Harving were great, but I think we ran them too much.

    And more variety on running plays would be interesting.

    It’s very hard to watch the offensive line on tv. So I also miss a lot of the Offensive Line action. But watching once in a while, you see the missed blocks.

I was relentless in my efforts to get rid of Chilly. The team was playing better with Moss and Chilly decided off the field stuff mattered more than winning …. so F’ Chilly.

    So I agree people like to blame QBs and Coaches and noone else. Its a team game and the talent failed.

    I like Musgrave

    Lastly Fred … TJack is a top 30 QB in the NFL but hes not top 20. He’s very inconsistant and a 79 QB rating says that. We could never be great with TJack at QB. Seattle fans will feel like we did in 2 more seasons. Seattle has a better OL , a better Defense , and Better WRs than we do. So Tjack had a decent season. I dont suspect you will ever see Pagan Ponder have a season under a 70 QB rating … He is a better QB than TJack but it takes a team in the NFL.

    Shawn my THICK feathered friend,

    You know me, I tend to favor all head coaches. I even think Belichick is a great coach, I just don’t think I would like him as a person.

    In the case of Childress/Moss, it would take a Vikings official to tell me exactly what happened there. I suggest Childress had no options when the Vikings acquired Moss. I mean that he may not have wanted him on the team in the first place.

    Because of my own coaching struggles with the administration I bristle when that happens. (If it happened)

    I’d say you have spiritual leaders in Harvin, AP, Allen and when healthy, Winfield. But I’d be willing to wager that Henderson was the formal leader of the defense, which will likely switch to Greenway if Henderson doesn’t get a new contract. I’d also presume that the team wants Ponder to be the leader on offense, while Hutchinson takes a strong role, especially for the line.

    @ Titus…. “Cris” Carter (spelled it right this time) should get the nod for HOF. (I was hung up on “Chris” Doleman… so… spelling glitch…) Carter is the main reason why Moss became such a weapon… He had a good mentor. The comment about Carter not making the HOF because of his “Loud mouth” by Vikesfansteve is silly. Carter was not as outspoken as he implies, he let his play do the talking. Sure, he knew how to talk the talk, but he did not belittle people around him or do striptease dances with goal posts…Doleman is a good choice too, but Carter is one of my favorite players ever. He is still a fan as well. Just curious to know if Titus, Fredrick, Parody, Shawn and Nova have ever met in real life or gone to a game together? Might be a cool thought. I don;t include myself in this list as I am not of the same caliber as I do not have time to write so many posts (Not making fun of you all in any way here) just stating the facts… You all have great insights.
