Vikings 2012 Opponents

Posted by Mike Wobschall on January 3, 2012 – 7:40 am

Now that the 2011 regular season is over, each NFL team knows the identity of its opponents for 2012. The full schedule is not known and isn’t typically announced until late April, but at least we know which teams will comprise the Vikings schedule next year.

Under the NFL’s scheduling formula, an individual team’s schedule is comprised of the following games:
– Home and away against its 3 division opponents (6 games)
– The four teams from another division within its conference on a rotating 3-year cycle (4 games)
– The four teams from a division in the other conference on a rotating 4-year cycle (4 games)
– Two intraconference games based on the prior year’s standings (2 games). These games will match a 1st place team against the 1st place teams in the two same-conference divisions the team is not scheduled to play that season. The 2nd place, 3rd place and 4th place teams are matched up in the same way.

In 2012 the Vikings will be matched up against the NFC West and the AFC South. Also, the Vikings finished in 4th place in the NFC North, so they’ll be playing the 4th place teams from the NFC East (Washington Redskins) and NFC South (Tampa Bay Buccaneers).

It’s far too early to start speculating on the level of difficulty of the schedule because so much will change with every team between now and Week 1. Here is the full list of Vikings opponents (separated by home and away matchups)…

Home
Division: Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers
NFC West: Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers
AFC South: Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans
NFC 4th Place: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Away
Division: Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers
NFC West: Seattle Seahawks, St. Louis Rams
AFC South: Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts
NFC 4th Place: Washington Redskins

    15-1 easy

Not as optimistic as Potato but I’m going with 13-3 with close losses to Houston and San Fran and unfortunately at least one to GB.

  3. By Immureglass on Jan 3, 2012 | Reply

Thats of course if the Vikes don’t completely mess up their off season.

As long as the injury plague stays away, I see a very promising season! Can’t wait for next year!!

I think we’ll be better, but only 8-8. Lions will get better. Bears beat us without Cutler and Forte. They’ll have both next year and I bet with a better receiving corps. I say we split CHI and DET and drop both to GB again. SF, IND, HOU are also loses and then one wildcard will probably beat us down. Seahawks weren’t looking half bad with TJax and he’d love to kick our ass (plus, we will be in Seattle… if they can beat the Saints at home, they can beat us). We can plug some holes but secondary players aren’t usually good to go right off the bat. You can’t draft secondary starters. You can start them, but they’re gonna get picked on and they’re probably gonna lose that battle 8/10 times. Best case scenario is we get most of our problems fixed but still have a struggling secondary. They will get better but it just takes time to mesh and feel comfortable.

    No Giants, Cowboys or Eagles

    No Steelers, Cincy or Baltimore

    teams we normally play.

We were 0-6 in our division this past year!! I don’t think that’s ever happened before!! We need to improve on that first to have any chance of making the playoffs and contending for the division!! 3-3 or better has to be a goal to have any chance of making the playoffs!! Playoffs, are you kidding me, playoffs, with that schedule, it would be a possibility!!!!

With the GM appointment today the off season is already starting out badly. Oh well easy schedule but same old vikings.

Should be 6-10 as absolute worst case scenario with that. No way we will better 9-7 with those games. Having said that, the West won’t be too easy as the Rams can’t get anything but better, Cards and Seahawks showed great improvement towards the end of the season aswell.

Colts should be improved if Manning is back, Titans also when Britt is back from injury so we are going to need a lot of luck for playoffs.

With current rosters, I see Rams, Jaguars, Bucaneers and Redskins as probable wins – 4
Packers x 2, Lions away and Bears away, 49ers, Titans and Texans as losses – 7

That leaves 5 games that will decide our fate – Bears & Lions at home, Cards, Hawks and Colts. Big improvements in our line and secondary needed to make it a winning season!

Well I hope the stadium is built and knowing vikes will stay here for at least another 30 years but if you look at it vikings for 2012 have only 4 truly outdoor games so that might be helpful (texans have a retractable roof) again I have no idea what happen with the vikings this upcoming year but it depends on what vikings get

I am always positive every game. I hope the draft does us well. I am in Pennsylvania and am tired of all the Steelers and Eagles fans…although there is a great handful of Viking fans here. Offensive line, secondary, and a tall wide receiver should be priorities. What to do with the 3rd pick? Is Ponder the answer? RG3 probably will be available. Can we hold a double digit halftime lead net season? I guess that was a good thing. We would have been 7-9 or 8-8 and got a worse pick in the draft. Bye for now from Pa. Will make a Viking home game one of these years. You guys look like you have fun in the stands.

  27. By AZvikesfan on Jan 3, 2012 | Reply

Gotta be optimistic here. Remember, the Vikes blew some 4th quarter leads this year or had a chance to win late in a handful of games. They were only legitimately outmatched three times (GB, CHI, NO). Some progression from Ponder, a couple new dbs and we could be sitting at 10-6 next season.

In 2009 we played the 49ers at home and the Rams away – as part of the NFC division rotation – or the last time we played. Remember the last minute Favre touchdown against the 49ers? Why not rotate these games\teams

man! titan, Jags and bucs all at home! I was hopin’ to have one of them away so i could see the team.

After this weak schedule plays out and we are 4-12 there will need to be some serious questions asked of this organization. After the spielman announcement it feels zigi is getting the fans ready for a departure. No one will want to follow this team soon!

8 and 8 at best. Ponders lack of arm strength will make him an interception machine. Not enough good corners out there to fill everyone’s needs. Be real lucky to win two division games. Hope i am wrong but i think not.

no playoffs 6-10 vikings need way to much help and wont get it or wont go after it they need a new quarterback but they will probably trade down and keep ponder..ing why they cant win

  38. By Jayson Child on Jan 3, 2012 | Reply

I think that the Vikes have many pieces in place to have a good year next year but they need to make sure that they have a good balance of Free Agent Aquisitions and draft good young talent PLUS put it all together in the offseason. It is not impossible for the Vikes to finish at 9-7 – 10-6 – or even 11-5 IF they make the right moves in the offseason

  39. By VikesFan on Jan 3, 2012 | Reply

5-11 really? this schedule is easy. i see we lose at packers once lose at lions away and win both bear games and lose against 49ers and maybe win against texans and maybe beat colts which that means we will have a winning record. we NEED to draft a cornerback for 1st round trust me dre kirkpatrick and morris claiborne will be gone if we dont draft them for 1st round i can see some playoff teams drafting a CB for 1st round. S.C.R.E.W a qb we wont get luck or RG3 anyways

  40. By 61vikings on Jan 4, 2012 | Reply

No such thing as easy in the NFL!! First things first, you have to do alot better in your division!! 0-6 will not get it done!! Must be 3-3 or better in your division to have any chance of making the playoffs!! I say with this schedule, we could go 7-9 or 8-8 with the talent we have now!! Fill in the needs we have on this team, and I could see 10-6 or better!!!

  41. By Geiber on Jan 4, 2012 | Reply

I say 10-6, loss to Packers (twice), Texans, Niners. and once to the lions.

  42. By Geiber on Jan 4, 2012 | Reply

But I spose if Cutler is back in full we may lose to the BEars once, maybe twice.

    Salu2 a to2

The more I read some comments about trading out of the 3 spot and moving down on the board, the more I like it. However, I wouldn’t drop below #6. We have a wonderful shot at Kalil (OT) which we need to keep Ponder upright, Claiborne (DB) which we need to plug up that awful secondary, or Blackmon (WR) a great big receiver for Ponder to throw to. By dropping back one or three slots, I believe we can still end up with one of these awesome people, plus pick up an additional one to three picks that we didn’t have before. Ultimately though, I think Fred Pagac and Joe Woods need to exit stage left. We need a defense that can fundamentally WRAP UP and TACKLE. Go back to basics!

  45. By Dr. Cooper on Jan 4, 2012 | Reply

why won’t they purchase a coach that has been to the dance and knows what it takes. We are so wasting AP legs.

  46. By vikesfansteve on Jan 4, 2012 | Reply

Will they keep Hutch? If not then needed is a LT, RT, RG. An outside receiver, Jackson, Bowe, D Jackson? Maybe 2. A nose Tackle, A new ILB & MLB, 2 shut down corners, A new SS & FS.

This can all be done via Free Agency & then draft for the future. It could be a rather quick & easy fit. Williams needs a compliment lineman like Pat Williams.

They need to stop the run better & get DB’s who are ball hawks. Rams went from 3-13 to SB Champs the next season. It can be done.

Plz don’t forget the season started late with no OTA’s sure we looked terrible in some games but we also looked good in about 5 games that could ahve went our way. I know we won’t be 3-13 next year. I think current DEF Co should be replaced, let Mike Singletary DEF Co. We need a DEEP THREAT plus OL and Secondary help bad. GO VIKES !

No one has mentioned J Webb. I really like him though I know he is still work in progress. We are in the toughest division but if they stay healthy, improve the secondary, get a new offensive coordinator, we can get to 10 wins. Lots of ifs but we have opportunities with the draft and getting some key free agents.

though it appears to be an easy schedule, that means nothing if the Vikings to not perform/play better than they did this season. Looking on the college pages it appears quite a few o-line players are applying to the draft – lets hope the coaches are smart enough to draft some protection for Ponder. As well, we need at least 1 great wr (would prefer 2 but the Vikings defense needs work!!!!).

I hope the vikings can be agressive in free agents this year especially in the secondary, and dt, and offensive line, and wide receiver, and outside linebacker, ohh no this is not good. i love the vikes but man idk what happened. seriously though if they can get a good secondary the defensive will be good i think thats a possible thing to start with. then in the draft hopefully trade back if some team wants RG3. if not i think we might be reaching for any player at that spot. i think if we traded back later in the top 10 of even 15 we could get a player of the same caliber, like blackmon compared to alshon jeffery. and gain hopefully a 1st or a 2nd and a 3rd. i hope teams want RG3

A 40 year die hard VIKINGS fan and ………….I see an 8-8 ……..9-7 if we get the progress that should be expected from certain players across the board …..and with the unfolding of limited free agency additions and the upcoming draft …lets just get in spielmens mind for a moment……give him the benefit of some savvy and or discipline to set the foundation of his 3 year plan to fruition ……..having said that ………I like the vision of getting a strategic , consistent planning to build an organization with developmental objectives from within our system ………. then we won’t be spending money like drunken sailors to fill spots through free agency like many of our bloggers …….or like we have seen through the past few years with signings like Favre and McNabb …..I find myself like many others waiting to see if we get a Garcon , Marshall , or even a mention of activity out there with T. O. …………sorry or more important an offensive line addition and CB !! anything ……..too fill a hole !!!……..too ensure some trust in acquiring somebody that would be a headline signing …..! but with the moves that have been completed as of yet …….This is a year where the prior year record will not benefit the vikes right away … we will have a painless year of limited expectation and we are fiscally responsible at the same time …….spielmen will make more moves and the roster will be solidified by the fourth week with all the uncertainty …………..we will really see how we measure up by then when certain teams will have mixed results being in the same situation as us …………..we need to invest in the system ……the time is now ………..

In closing I am a Canadian living here in Vancouver BC , I commend the scouting of the team ………..we have players like Arcenaux and my Man Elimimian recently acquired from my home town CFL Team BC LIONS – GREY Cup champions in Canada …….I know its not NFL ……but it warms my heart when we have the rights to these guys ensuring that the scouts are doing there jobs …………..ELIMIMIAN is a beast !!!!! get ready for this guy …….EJ on Steroids with PUNISHING TACKLES …….he is very worthy as a 10 year pro bowler …….just watch!
