Today marks the beginning of the 2012 free agent signing period.
It also marks the count down to the NFL draft on April 26.
Key dates to mark on your calendar… Jan 28th Senior Bowl and Feb 22nd NFL scouting combine.
The Vikings will turn this thing around this offseason!

I think its time for a new defensive coordinator and maybe special teams coordinator. I dont think we should shift to a 3-4 because of Jared Allen but we definitely need a new Def coordinator. Pagac just didnt cut it and the defense was too undisciplined, way too many penalties and missed tackles.

I am not understanding why we would even entertain keeping Bill Musgrave on this team. Let’s be honest here, he showed us all year that he is not capable of calling the correct plays , his offensive theory and design in poor, and nobody seems to mention his resume’ as a coordinator was very very bad before he arrived. He calls his plays from a “business card” sized play sheet, and it is horribly obvious what plays he is calling. It is so funny that when you see the offense line up you know exactly what there move is! My gosh, how many times are you going to rollout your QB in one game? 9 out of 10 times they did that, the defender was right in the QB’s face! In fact, that is how Ponder hurt his hip AGAIN!! Even Adrian Petersons injury was caused by the defense knowing what we were going to run, just the same as Ponders. Lastly, go look at the offensive stats, Bill Musgrave is by far the worst person ever to run a Vikings offense. If he stays? I wont go to a SINGLE game as long as he is here running the offense…. Remember Mr Wilf, Without the fans, you have ZERO……………

  16. By Immureglass on Jan 2, 2012 | Reply

I’m also wondering if we’ll see in changes to personnel this week. Speilman/Musgrave/Pagac should all be on the shopping block but I have a sneaking suspicion that there won’t be any.

  17. By Immureglass on Jan 2, 2012 | Reply

IMO I think they should promote Singletary to DC and Hire Todd Haley as OC the reason behind this is because they both have that fire in their bellies that this staff so desperately needs and their not afraid to get after a player who makes a dumb mistake. Also Haley is an excellent WR coach and I think it would greatly benefit the young talent we have or if they decide to draft another WR.

The ownership appear to be well intended but they don’t have a clue as to how to run/develop an NFL franchise. The team will go nowhere unless a proven “NFL WINNER” runs the team from the top — Ron Wolf are you still alive?

We need to pick up a free agent BIG play WR and draft DB’s. If we have cap maybe pick up some db’s off free agency. The scouts this year better have a great draft or we need to clean house.

    Bill Musgrave needs to go..

  22. By Viking Dave on Jan 2, 2012 | Reply

Now its time to correct whats wrong, it starts at the top. We need a real GM, the coaching staff needs to be looked at and replace them with folks that understand this game. we need at least five (5) new faces on defense and four (4) on offense. that what needs to be done. SIMPLE Also lets take look at what happened in Philadelphia we don’t need that type of club. I’ve watched the Vikings for two many years, this is great franchise with grat history. This a blue coller team and the fans look to Sunday to watch their Vikings. Remember Mr Wilf, Without the fans, you have ZERO

He’s right what. You have a rookie Qb. He throw for 1800 yards with no help. He needs wr period. Let Ponder go into one more season with same OC ppl.

  29. By Immureglass on Jan 2, 2012 | Reply

@Jake I think there is some young potential at WR on this roster Aromoshadu, Arceneaux, and Burton that can be developed into good WRs. I’m not disagreeing with about bringing in a good deep threat WR if there is enough cap space.

  30. By Rick on Jan 2, 2012 | Reply

Yes I agree, the offense looked terrible this year. We need to remember one thing though. Musgrave had what, maybe a month to install a completely brand new offense?? That is not nearly enough time for everyone to learn an entire playbook. Musgrave was extremely limited on what he could do. Also, consistency is key. Remember how highly Alex Smith was drafted? Then he had 4 new OCs in his first four years, and it wasn’t until this year where he started to look good, and it’s because he’s finally been able to keep the same OC.

Not to mention what terrible WRs he had to use. Draft Kalil or Martin to protect Ponder, get some WRs who can actually play, plus another offseason/year to learn the offense. After next season is when we should really take a look at Musgrave.

Yup, agreed! Everywhere around the League teams are talking about who is going to be the new GM, or who the new coach/coordinators will be. And here we are, this ownership is not even thinking about hiring a GM !!!!!! That is unacceptable as a fan!! The Colts GM who built the late 80′s early 90′s Bills, and the Manning Colts is available. We should be doing EVERYTHING we can to get this man on our staff as GM/ VP of ops!!!! Polian has proven he can do it. When you need brain surgery do you have your plummer perform it???? nope! When you run a NFL franchise do you have a real estate developer make your important roster decisions?? NOPE!!!! You let the GM do that!!!!!!!!!!! I am personally sick of supporting a team that cant even get that right!!!! My God, how long does this need to go on? I have been supporting them for 42 years and its HIGH TIME they start doing it right!! Even Frazier should be on the CHOP BLOCK. That knucklehead hired Musgrave knowing full well that he had a dismal resume’ as an offensive coordinator!!!! So what if he was QB coach in Atlanta? Big deal!! Matt Ryan is good because he was good long before Musgrave got his claws on him….. Getting tired of it all Mr Wilf.

  39. By Rick on Jan 2, 2012 | Reply

Jake: I think this draft is incredibly important. We’re going to have 3 extra picks this year (compensatory) with one being either in the 3rd or 4th, another being in the 4th, and another being in the 6th. That will give us 9-10 picks. If Kalil is gone, we need to auction off our #3 pick to the highest bidder looking for RGIII. A team like the Dolphins or Redskins could be desperate enough. SO we trade back (and stay in the top 10) and get a guy like Jonathan Martin (so we still get a franchise LT, while picking up a few extra picks in this draft (and possibly next year). So, in essence, we could go into this draft with 11, 12, or even 13 picks. That is EXACTLY what a rebuilding team needs. We just need to be smart with who we pick.

Are you kidding? I like Ponder, but he was not #12. Its just obvious we have bad people making the important decisions

Alshon Jeffery is more of a megatron type. Jeffery is 6’4 and like 220. Thats crazy. Neither one of them will outrun anyone, but they’re huge and will out jump everyone.

I’m not that high on Flyd. He has attitude problems, and I’ve seen him drop some easy catches in big moments. Blackmon is a beast though. He’s fast, but alsp very strong and physical, and he’s a great human being as well. I would not complain if we got him instead of Kalil.

Here is what needs to happen we take the best WR then we take a OL in the second round. I think that a QB will be open for us in free agency so we need to get rid of that loser Ponder and look for a QB in the free agency. We need to get a CB and some safety’s as well. I think that we need to replace Robison and get Uminyera from the Giants because it is obvious that he isn’t happy there he will be good on the other side of Allen. We need to replace Loadholt because he is the cause of most of the penalties of the OL men. There is a lot of talent in free agency this year we need to take advantage of it. Do it VIKINGS do it. Do these things and we will be good. GOOOOOOOO VIKINGS.

Vikings need DB’s period. It has become a passing league. If the Vikings can’t defend the pass next year, heck we’ll have the number one pick in 2013. I think we could have hired high school DB’s this year and have gotten better performance. After solving the DB problem better get the OL taken care of or Ponder will never have a chance to develop. And if the GM and coaches don’t get what needs to be done, well coaches will be gone in 2013. Then maybe the Wilf’s could hire someone like John Gruden, He’d get it done.

Was anybody else a bit surprised that DeGeare spent the entire year on the practice squad? I recall that he filled in pretty decently for Hutchinson last year during the injury, and people were commenting that he can become a good replacement once Hutch finally decides to retire. What has changed since then? The poor play on the offensive line should have been enough to get him on the active roster at some point during the year based on the accolades he received last year. I’d really like to see one or two of the recent OLinemen (DeGeare, Love, Fusco) start showing they can provide starter value. They were all late round picks, but if we’re going to be successful, we need some of these later picks to step up and become quality starters.

Through the last 40+years I have been a vikings fan thick and thin. I keep rooting for you guys, but you need a new General Manager. One that can plan and pick better personnel. (Coahces & Players). Stop with picking up old players from other teams, we all know how well that works for your short, medium, & long range plans. If you are going to live with a bad season, then let your rookies play thay can’t do any worse, and can surely learn and gain much better experience from the playing time rather than bench time.
Look at the past few decades for your answers to your problems. Staying power for the whole 60 minutes, and relaying your intentions to the other teams Defense, better pass protection. You might just as well put up your intentions on the big screen for everyone to see.
I’ll continue to make the effort to support the team and buy your franchised itrems, the least you could do is provide 110% effort in getting the team where it belongs. To the Super Bowl.

Need to clean house in coaching and management. How can this team go from the NFC Championship two years ago to 3-13 this year. Ponder is a good QB, AP is the best back in the league, Percy is a good 2nd WR, Hutchinson is a great Guard, We have 2 good TE, Greenway is a good LB, Jared is a beast at DE, and Longwell and Kluwe are great as kicker and punter. We need better O-line, true #1 receiver, CB’s and Safeties. But the issue starts with the head coach and the GM!!!!!!!! Also the Defensive and Offensive Coordinators need to go

Bill Polian fired by the Colts!!! Vikings should consider him as a GM???? After watching J. Blackmon against a good Standford team, I’m convinced, the Vikes should make him the first pick instead of Kalil!! May not be there though with St.Louis picking ahead of the Vikes!! If you don’t take a WR in the first round, we need to hit free agency hard for one!!

  85. By 61vikings on Jan 3, 2012 | Reply

Is everyone convinced that C.Ponder is our QB of the future??? Will the Vikes be tempted to take RG3 if he’s there for the taking?? I think the Rams are in a tough spot because Bradford is not working out for them!! I think they take either Blackmon or RG3, which will leave us with one of those guys to pick!!! Will we draft safe and for need and take Kalil!! This is one draft that I will watch for sure!!! Biggest needs in the draft, as we all know is (OL,CB,FS,SS,WR,MLB)!!!

We will need to look at that.
We haven’t had a chance work on that.
I am not sure right now, we need to look at the tape.

If you really believe that than our scouts and Speilman need to go.
    That is not happening.
    Case in point:
We reached for Asher Allen in the 3rd round when most scouting sources had him as a 4-5 round guy. The Vikings drafted him high because of his return skills. Guess what, he has never been given a chance to return a punt or kickoff. The Vikings reached for Ryan Cook in the 2nd round and was never given a chance to play his natural center position. Tavaris Jackson was a reach in the 2nd round and many think we didn’t do a good job developing his talent. I can go on and on…

Ponder, our franchise QB was benched after a handful of meaningless games.
    Really? Did we do that?
We traded for McNabb to help us develop Ponder. That didn’t last long?
Frazier tells us at the end of last season McKinney and Berrian will have a great attitude and ready to play this year. Really?

I can go on and on…

My point is maybe it is time for Bill Polian as GM! Maybe it is time to clean the house?

    @ Carl K
Our offensive line was the worst in the NFL!! I’m not saying these guys are bad, they just weren’t able to break through this year and take over a spot!! You need quality back-ups in this league, and I think that’s all these guys are!! Give them another year or two and they might break through and start on our line!! The Vikings need to make it a priority in the offseason and revamp this offensive line!! Only the center position is locked up with a long term contract!! S.Hutchinson may retire, I just don’t know his contract situation!! Charles Johnson is a guard and has no business playing LT!! I would put Phil Hold-a-lot at RG and draft two tackles or draft one and sign one through free agency!! Kalil is the safe and obvious choice for our first pick, but it would be tempting to take Blackmon or RG3 with the third pick!! I think there’s alot of teams who want him, so why not draft him and use him for trade possibilities and pick up some more draft picks along the way????

Sendejo, Fred Evans or McKenzie, etc

No coaches decided to ask one of these young men to sit out this last game for the sake of the team??
Give a chance for Love, Reed, or King to at teast take the field on Sunday and get a few snaps

61vikings – all I am saying is this was the perfect year to play them and see what they have. Charle Johnson, Berger, Hutch and Herrera are not the long term future… so why not play young guys when the season is shot?
I would disagree that DeGeare, Fusco, Love have no talent.
When you are ranked among the top 10-15 in the country at your position, that is pretty good talent.

They sat down Ponder in the Detroit game because he was pathetic!! He threw 3 int’s, one for a pick six and fumbled in the endzone for another six, he just didn’t have it that day!! You play to win the game, so they put Webb in and he revitalized the offense and almost won the game!! If there’s one guy who was a “BIG” stretch, every draft analysis, had Ponder going in the 2nd round!! The job was given to him because he was drafted in the 1st round!! Remember, Drew Bledsoe was drafted #1 overall, got hurt and never got his job back because a guy (Tom Brady), who by the way was drafted in the 6th or 7th round, was determined to prove people wrong and did so in a big way!! Webb is no where near a Tom Brady, but he was drafted in the 7th round and he wants to prove alot of people wrong!! I think guys drafted in the later rounds, especially QB’s, have more of a drive to succeed and prove people wrong by drafting them in the late rounds!! I still say Ponder needs to start!! Build an offensive line around him so he can succeed!!!

All the bad teams are firing people like crazy. So why can’t we?

We hire of really absolutely extremely terrible practice squad guys, and THAT’S what we are supposed look forward to?

I guarantee you, if you do not sign good free agents, and have another bad draft,
you will lose a lot of fans. The Vikings are truly a cursed team, which will never win a Super Bowl.
    Thanks alot

Like i said before we spend money on FA or we draft to build for 3 or 4 years down the road. if we dont get in help in the later rounds with diamonds in the rough with the scouts we got then clean house. If blackmon or the ot falls to us we have to make are r mind. we have a alot of needs. i say we trade for more picks bc cleveland and washington would like to have RG3

  100. By JaketheSnake on Jan 3, 2012 | Reply

Also cleveland has to picks in the first round so we could work out a trade if we know washington really would like Rg3

LOL at saying it’s a passing league and to get DB’s.

Name one DB who stopped the Packers, Saints or Patriots this year. Vikings obviously need help here but it isn’t really gonna matter. Our division is a nightmare right now, everybody but us can throw a lot when healthy.

The O-line and passing game is by far the most important thing to improve. Sadly a LB would be nice also.

Yes, fire Musgrave because there was a lockout and he couldnt put the whole new offensive scheme in the playbook because the players didn’t have time to learn it because of the lockout.. but yes, fire him. Genius. So smart.

Please, please, please do not get rid of Cook. If we do, before you know it he will be wearing a jets, or cowboys jersey at the pro bowl talking about how he has his life on track. Players do stupid things when they are young. I know what he has done was a bit extreme, but give the guy a chance. With Frazier and Singeltary as mentors, and his ability on the field, we could be talking about Cook in the same breath as Revis, and Asumough. As bad as our Secondary is i think having #31 is a pretty good starting point in rebuilding it. Just sayin !!!

  104. By Olsen on Jan 3, 2012 | Reply

First thing they need is a secondary that can defend the pass. Every team they faced killed them through the air and its been this way for a few years sure they need improvement in the offense but they have more problems stopping the pass and there special teams haven’t seemed very spacial Nathanael is right they are going to loose a lot of fans if nothing is done been a fan for at least 10 years and i am sick of watching them loose

So Spielman is staying on as GM, there is strike # 1 so it is obvious that the front office does not listen to it’s fans!! So lets see what strike # 2 will be???

  106. By jcdogg on Jan 3, 2012 | Reply

everyone, Ponder needs Blackmon…He is our pick. If not the kid from ND. We need a playmaker first. Then address our second weakness…secondary. OT Tackles in FA and trade and look to revitalize the line by moving people around.

  107. By andy on Jan 4, 2012 | Reply

Everyone try to keep in mind, yes Blackmon would be a great choice, and like some say then address the O line in free agency. Only one problem with that, Teams do not let go of high quality O lineman!! They are too valuable! On the other hand, there are SEVERAL WR’s that are free agents this year!!!!! Go look at the list. This team would be greatly upgraded if they took Kalil or the next best Lineman, and went after the stud receivers that are available. Deshawn Jackson and Harvin sound pretty good dont you think? Or Colston? You cant make your offense run unless the LOS battle is won! So having Star playmakers does you know good when your QB has no time to throw and is INJURED EVERY WEEK FROM VICIOUS HITS HE IS TAKING!!!!!!!!

  108. By andy on Jan 4, 2012 | Reply

One thing that will haunt coach Frazier is that he reached for a QB at the number 12 pick instead of taking the best available player. He thought he was going to be a huge success this year and go to the big game, instead of being smart and using his brain to face reality. Now he goes 3-13 (pathetic), and he has a average arm, average vanilla QB for his future with this team. If he just would have been smart and took the SAFE choice at #12 last year he could have had Webb develop or even get a much better QB this year in round 1. He was acting with his pipe dream instead of being a NFL coach and doing the right thing!! We wasted a #12 on Ponder and now he has to live with it…. So now we fans have to watch Frazier and his below average team the next year (minimum) until the Wilfs fire him and get a real coach in here. I like Frazier, but he IS NOT A HEAD COACH !! Sorry but the truth hurts Les! You messed up bad in last years draft and even worse by hiring Bill MUSCRAT as your coordinator….. Vikings will have 5 maybe 4 wins next year and then we can finally dump him as coach and regroup… Meanwhile the fans are fading fast and you have exactly ZERO WITHOUT US MR WILF!!!!!!!!

  109. By Carl K on Jan 4, 2012 | Reply

If you go out and give Deshawn Jackson (or anyone) more money than Percy Harvin you will have problems in the locker room!!!!!!!

A free agent WR could be very bad news if they don’t give Harvin the money he deserves. Harvin is still playing under his rookie contract!

Alshon Jeffery will fall to the Vikings in the second round. Tommy Steeter and Dwight Jones will be guys that will look good at the combine and be solid 2nd rd picks. Ruben Randle, Nick Toon, Jeff Fuller and Marvin McNutt are later round guys that could be stars at the next level.

We must draft OT and WR first 2 picks. Best player available round 3

No problems with free agent corners, safeties and LBs.

    @ Alex
Ponder a LOSER ??? ARE YOU JOKING this guy is the most intelligent QB to come out of college in a VERY long time he will be just fine when we get an offensive line and some reciever to throw to. I could probably coach a defense against Minnesota stuff the run and cover Harvin with 2 people and they are DONE … sure the tight ends are pretty good but with the play calling they are a non factor… O line DB and WR’s via draft free agancy or trade that is what we need. GO VIKES

  111. By andy on Jan 4, 2012 | Reply

That all sounds great in a perfect world. I like Jeffrey in the 2nd though. There are just so many questions with this team it is mind numbing! I am not sold on erin Henderson, EJ is not the same player he was before injury’s. Brinkley may get to the next level but still a big ? I am not thrilled with the soft cover 2 we play , and I dont think we have good enough athletes to play it well. So at this point who knows????

WE NEED A HEAD COACH !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  115. By Dave on Jan 6, 2012 | Reply

Tyrone McKenzie is going to be a great LB.. I watched him his entire collegiate career at South Florida and he has all the skills to be a top talent with the right development.. Outside of that, these guys are all a waste of time.. Get a coach, some WR’s and an O-Line and then lets talk… Until you have some Offensive TALENT on this team (Besides Peterson and Harvin) we will go NOWHERE

  116. By andy on Jan 6, 2012 | Reply

The team will go nowhere with Musgrave running the offense. Just horrible….!
