Vikings Place Hutchinson On Reserve/Injured List, Sign RB Todman

Posted by Mike Wobschall on December 27, 2011 – 5:02 pm

The Vikings placed LG Steve Hutchinson on the Reserve/Injured list on Tuesday and signed RB Jordan Todman from the San Diego Chargers practice squad to take the vacant spot on the roster.

Hutchinson did not play in last week’s win over the Washington Redskins because of a concussion he sustained two weeks ago against the New Orleans Saints.

Todman was a 6th-round draft pick of the San Diego Chargers in last April’s draft. He was a standout RB for the University of Connecticut, scoring 31 rushing TDs and running for 3,179 yards in 3 seasons. Todman was a First-Team All Big East selection in 2010 and was also named the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year that season.

Todman has some speed, but this gives us 4 RBs on the roster and only 4 WRs.

They must expect to lose a lot of running backs this week?

Hutch’s career with the Vikings might be over.Just speculation

  5. By Woodboat on Dec 27, 2011 | Reply

Signing a WR for the last game of the season would be useless. He wouldn’t have any timing established with his QB. I can’t imagine that they’ll have 4 active RBs on sunday, but if they did, the new guy just needs to know what side of the QB to run to and which gap to hit. Much easier to step in as a RB…

  6. By Woodboat on Dec 27, 2011 | Reply

If the Vikes have the ability to completely revamp their line, they should. Hutchinson has been great for years, but he’s lost a step to say the least. They let Birk go when he still had some gas in the tank… I bet they do the same with Hutch.

Great pick-up! Now dump Booker and play the young guys to see what they can do before the draft comes along.

  8. By Carl K on Dec 27, 2011 | Reply

Former Vikings’ WR Jaymar Johnson knows our offense and would be more help in this last game than Todman.

Allen Riesner knows our offense too. The Vikings must be looking ahead to next year and may not be happy with L Booker or C King.

  9. By Dking on Dec 27, 2011 | Reply

I think booker will be gone next year and king and todman will fight fo the 3rd string running back next year

Booker is a free agent at the end of the year, I think.

  11. By Roninmn.. on Dec 27, 2011 | Reply

@Woodboat. I agree with you about our offensive line. I think we should keep Sullivan. Get some great draft picks and fill in the gaps. We also need to shore up our secondary. What’s your take on Mistral Raymond?

Has anyone noticed that this team has twice as many wins on the road as it did at home? How many times has that happened? Actually, except for the Pack and Bears’ games, we played pretty well on the road– I believe there is a lot to look forward to in the next two to three years.

  14. By Frederick Jones on Dec 27, 2011 | Reply

    @Titus,

I have a theory about the Vikings winning more on the road than at home.

The Redskins team was very mad at there team. So anything they do bad in the game is highly BOOED. So the Vikings were aided in their game in Washington.

Perhaps we get some of the same in the Metrodome?

    @Woodboat,

I’m very afraid that with Peterson’s injury, the Vikings will draft an RB in the 1st round. That isn’t all bad if they can get the Offensive Linemen elsewhere.

Most football people would say that the OL makes the RBs, not the other way around.

Put Ponder behind the NE Pats line and he has a year similar to that of Cam Newton.

But what is the mentality of the VPs???

Hire a general manager. Bill Cowher doesn’t want it. There was an article in SI.

  24. By TITANIUM TITUS on Dec 27, 2011 | Reply

Fred– Washington has had how many coaches in the 10 years before Shanahan? I bet it was at least 7. That is why they have so much rebuilding to do. If we stick with Frazier we won’t be in the basement for long. In fact, had we kept Chilly, we would already have been on the rebound and this year we would have been 8-8.

Raheem Morris the TB Bucs coach was named the 2010 NFL Coach of the Year.
    The Bucs were 10-6.

This year they are like 4-11. Now they want to fire Morris.

How do you go from the BEST coach to the WORST coach in one season???

    This thinking is not logical.

There is a lot of this type of thinking on Vikings.com. WE DO NOT know WHAT IS GOING ON. “You don’t watch the tapes.” Jim Mora (Colts and Saints many years in the NFL.)

Todman is a good pickup for the Vikes – If there is anything that AJ Smith knows I think it is RB talent, because he has a decent track record with them. We are probably losing Booker next year, and that is fine, Todman and King will be nice to have around. I only saw him play once in College, it was not a stand out game for him from what I remember.

  54. By Viking33 on Dec 28, 2011 | Reply

Todman is really a move for next season, with only one game left to play we only had to sign him to our active roster for one game this year, that doesn’t mean he will play. But it does mean that we will have in in Camp for next season. We will dress 3 RB’s for the Chicago game, Todman probably won’t be on the Acitve game roster, he just won’t be on the PS. I am speculating, but I think that makes the most sense, it is a smart move for us, I think that means we will not be looking for a RB in the Draft.

  55. By Viking33 on Dec 28, 2011 | Reply

@ Dave – thanks for the insight, I did not really get a chance to see him play, just the once. I had heard a lot of him though and he does have some pretty nice highllight clips on the internet.

  56. By Viking33 on Dec 28, 2011 | Reply

Here is an interesting thing I saw on the internet. The Vikings tried to sign Tori Gurley off the Packer PS about 2 games ago. Gurley opted to not sign with the Vikings, but to stay in GB on the PS, citing the fact that he would get more experience, blah blah blah there than in MN. It is interesting to know that I guess we do not have that much faith in Arcineaux to even try and make that move, and also for this kid to pass up on the Money$$ to not come here, what does that say????

  57. By NorthwoodsVikesFan on Dec 28, 2011 | Reply

Let’s see if I got this right – MN’s O-line has been dismal at protecting whoever drops back to pass, and only marginal at opening up holes for whoever runs the ball. One of them gets injured and moved to IR, and they sign another RB???????? WTF? Why are they turning up the radio to drown out the sound of the broken engine? FIX THE ENGINE!!!!!

  58. By 4eversteve on Dec 28, 2011 | Reply

I definitely believe that this is an insurance policy in case A.P. doesn’t make it back at the beginning of the season, Jordon Todman reminds me of Darren Sproles a tough little guy who is explosive. He will be a great pick up if given the chance to learn the offense, he will contribute to the team an will easily replace Lorenzo Booker one of the change of pace backs . I also like Caleb King , but not sure whether he has pick up the offense yet . The Vikings did sign him to the active roster maybe fearing that another team would snap him up. Frazier is tipping his hand and saying that they intend to run the ball no matter what, with the season nearing the end the Vikings are shaping the roster for next season and heaven knows that they can’t afford to miss on even one of their up coming draft selection with the way the team perform this season. The O-line, D-backs an a receiver or two maybe not in that order , but all areas of need nonetheless .

  59. By 4eversteve on Dec 28, 2011 | Reply

I’ve said this many times before , if you took Drew Brees , Tom Brady or even a healthy Peyton Manning behind the current O-line of the Vikings we would have about the same record. the quarterbacks for the Vikings have no time to sit in the the pocket because there hasn’t been a pocket all season long they have been under siege after the ball is snap, they are flushed from the pocket immediately and forced to throw on the run. The running backs receive the hand-offs they also have been hit in the offensive backfield due to poor O-line play. Bottom line is this O-line was a major factor in our poor record and it needs to be overhauled, revamped and infused with new younger, tougher, and smarter talent or we will see more of the same things happen again next season.

  60. By Carl on Dec 28, 2011 | Reply

Like i said in F/A get Carl Nicks OG from the saints. Keep John Sullivan at C. move Charlie Johnson to RG. I said this for last game put Demarcus Love in at RT tackle this last game to see what he has. I saw start Berger at LG and bring in Brandon Fusco for the second half and maybe if were winning see about spelling Sullivan at C for the fourth quarter. Then this coming draft another guard and tackle in the later rounds like the fourth and fifth round. I also agree let booker go after the season and letting Kalib King and Jordan Todman battle for the third RB spot that will be a nice competition in camp. One thing i think we run the ball so often has two parts to it and (1) Musgrave is not imaginitive and he knew the offensive line was weak this year and he had to keep one of his play makers into block. For that we can thank the incompitence of Spielman not drafting O-Lineman. Leslie is the second problem he so badly wants to get Adrian his yards so he gets his money. Leslie should be thinking team wide he does not have the vision and will hurt the team as a whole he should step down and give us chance to get a real coach. So to recap Fire Spielman,Fraizer,Musgrave Pagec. In other words clean house and start over.

I agree with 4eversteve you put any great qb behind our ol they get killed especially Brady or Manning they cant move fast enough to avoid 3 lineman in their face every play.I say they address that in free agency on a proven player not some washed up has been get out the pocketbook Ziggy. If you dont protect your qb give him some time to throw or open up some running lanes you LOSE.Use your 1st draft pick on db whatever happened to Cook is he off the team and in jail or what?We dont need women beaters or thugs on the team we need talented players that want to be Vikings and win CHAMPIONSHIPS.We are a couple of years away from that but if Spielman would shore up the lines and put playmakers in the def. backfield then and finally we will win!

  64. By Viking33 on Dec 28, 2011 | Reply

I don’t know what games people are watching who say Musgrave does not have an imagination. I have seen a lot of great play design this season that I have not seen here for many years. I think he has done a lot with what he has to work with – how many play designs can you come up with no QB protection. I swear some of you guys think there is no other team trying to win the game and / or there is some magical fairy dust that helps us win. The team is not that talented, and guess what, it shows.

Idk if anyone is as crazy as me but i have been following MN news about the gov. issues and have been commenting frequently. Theres a few guys and girls that just pi$$ me off with their stupid comments about “bailing millionaires out”. One of them being Ed Kohler ( who i cant STAND). I understand that taking money from citizens is awful….i understand that but for some like most of us, vikings football is wonderful, regardless of the recent dark and dismal seasons. I love my team and if they leave MN, I will not give the nfl another penny from my pocket…you can count on that.
