Gerhart, Raymond Up For Weekly Awards

Posted by Mike Wobschall on December 27, 2011 – 10:23 am

A pair of young Vikings are up for weekly awards this week after providing a helping hand in the Vikings victory over the Washington Redskins on Saturday.

RB Toby Gerhart has been nominated for the FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week after rushing for 109 yards on 11 carries at, appropriately enough, FedEx Field. Joining Gerhart as nominees for the award are Pittsburgh’s Rashard Mendenhall (18-116-1) and Buffalo’s C.J. Spiller (16-111-1). Gerhart has the lowest yardage total of the 3 finalists by a slight margin, but it should also be noted that he gained those yards on just 11 carries.

Vikings fans can vote for Gerhart on NFL.com/FedEx now through 2:00 p.m. CT on Friday.

The other Vikings player up for an award is rookie S Mistral Raymond, who has been nominated for Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week honors. Raymond tallied 6 tackles, 2 passes defensed and a 4th-quarter INT, which he returned for 31 yards, in the Vikings win over Washington. Raymond’s INT basically sealed the Vikings victory because it set up Ryan Longwell for a 23-yard FG that put the Vikings up by 10 points with just over 4 minutes to play in the game.

Bengals QB Andy Dalton, Raiders WR Denarius Moore, Panthers QB Cam Newton and Redskins RB Evan Royster are also finalists. Vikings fans can vote for Raymond on NFL.com/rookies now through Friday at 11:00 a.m. CT.

    Have a great day.

Who cares if A.P is out for an extended period of time. He only won us one game this year. That is it.

  4. By SpenceEveryBodyLovesMe on Dec 27, 2011 | Reply

Its a Quarterback driven league where they determine who wins the game. Good QB play almost always equates to Wins. A.P had plenty of great games this year and it only equated to him winning solely one game for us against the Cards. Hes not as important as most of you guys think.

No doubt A P is a great running back but the truth is that the vikings offense seems to work a lot better when he’s on the bench. He has way too many carries for negative yardage and that causes the offense to have too many three and outs. Get those tight ends more involved as well as Harvin. Get a W R that teams have to worry about and stop being so predictable with A P. Start sustaining some drives and that will keep our lousy secondary off the field.

If the rest of the offense could play at AP’s level we wouldn’t be so predictable. Right now AP is (was) all we got, the other teams knew that. That’s not AP’s fault, the blame should go to the cr appy players not the outstanding ones!

I feel for AP.. and the Vikes but at the same time I admire the young guys that are having to go to battle. King will help our offense much more then Lil Booker. I know he’s quick but he get stuffed all the time. King should have been on field a long time ago. And I wish people would quit dissing our secondary. Mark my words that these young guys are way better at coverage then we have seen in the past. We are undersized in the secondary but that is an easy fix. (Landry) cough cough…. EJ is a great run stopper but for some reason we have him all worried about the pass. We have corners that can play man coverage.. Too bad one of them is a criminal.(Cook) cough cough.. Lets clean it up a little and play with heart. We dont even need next years draft to compete. AND THAT IS THE TRUTH

Offensive line and receivers are the problem for both A.P. and Ponder. Watch the whole game not just the quarterback and running back.

i hope ppl start seeing the talent that Webb has. Vikings struck gold when they picked him and i want to see him as the starter. Ponder is good and i think he’ll be a great QB in the nfl down the road but he needs to be able to read the D and make changes on the line. Let him sit and learn. Play webb, when the pass isnt there he can kill you with his legs. SKOL baazzooka Joe, SKOL vikes

Does anybody find it funny that as soon as Webb and Toby come in, the holes magically open up?

When the Vikes drafted Toby I thought what with AP isn’t that a little deep at RB, but it sure is paying dividends. He deserves the Fedex weekly ground player award.

Im actually looking forward to this game because I want to see how the opposing defense plays when they have a full week to prepare for Webb. Also I want to see how Toby plays again. Hes been a pleasant surprise….in the last 3 games he started he had 91, 90, and 109 yards.

Obviously Management thought AP was important enough to this organization by making him the highest paid RB in the NFL!! This is a “Team” sport where it takes everyone to win the game, not just a great RB!!! We real Viking fans do care if AP is out for an extended period of time!! With only one game left in the season, AP will have all of the offseason to heal and be ready for next year!! Just start rebuilding the offensive line on this team and we will be alot better next year!!!

I like Webb, but the problem with him is the fact that most of his big plays are off of broken plays. I feel like you guys have felt the “Tebow effect” where you are all infatuated with a player who isn’t that good at his position, yet he’s had some good plays to make you forget about the bad ones.

We’ll see how the Bears defense does with him, but I have a feeling it’ll be like the Lions game last year where he looked like the 5th string QB. Unless he totally surprises me and makes great throws and executes well, then maybe. I still like what I have seen out of Ponder however. He just doesn’t have time to do anything.

Ponder is clearly the future, and we need to have him play while he can.

ATTN: everybody that enjoys DEFENSE tune in tonight for the Belk Bowl on ESPN at 7CT

NC STATE leads the nation in forced turnovers

    # 1 David Amerson CB leads the nation in INT’s ( sop honey badger 2 )
    # 42 Audie Cole LB projected pick 80-90 in the draft ( clay matthews look alike)
    # 35 Terrell Manning LB my personal favorite linebacker in the nation

    # 6 T.J. Graham WR projected 4th rounder ( deep threat / kick returner )

Just watched the tape of David Amerson, looks like a good ball hawk. Why is he not on the 1st or 2nd round draft order??

Maybe Vikings will take a look at him today…May be a good pick in 3rd round.

    Amerson is only a s o p h o m o r e. Big talent!

your LB Manning already got a pick that led to NC State scoring drive. Nice call on the player I was not aware of. He seems to be overshadowed by Amerson and Cole.

@ Davejr “We don’t even need next years draft to compete. AND THAT’S THE TRUTH”…huh? You think we have the talent necessary, on this 3-12 team, to compete for a chance at the superbowl? You are more deluded than Titus, if that is possible. :)

@ Spence…. (concerning the comment about Gerhart and Webbs successes) Toby Gerhart is a good RB, but he wasn’t the threat that AP was. I assume you’d rather have a less talented player on the field than a superstar… interesting concept.

BUT, in support of Spence, I made the suggestion at the beginning of the season that the team trade Peterson for draft picks or a big time CB and picks… something. Having a top end RB doesn’t really matter anymore… its having a passing game and being able to defend the pass is all that matters anymore. RBs can still get smashed like the old days, but you can’t touch a QB or a WR without getting fined. It’s all about the passing game now, and we are horrible in that aspect on both sides of the ball.

yea Manning starting to make an impact all over the field! this is awesome

Hey guys i might be fired at the end of the year because my team is even worse than your guys team. i see your defense isnt doin to great this year, so if i do get fired perhaps you can hire me as D coordinator so i can turn your defense into one similar than the one that destroyed that legendary patriots offense in the superbowl to deny perfection…. Im sayin though….
