Allen, Hutchinson Dealing With Concussions; Peterson, Ponder In Good Shape

Posted by Mike Wobschall on December 19, 2011 – 3:28 pm

A pair of important offensive starter who entered Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints coming off injuries – Adrian Peterson (ankle) and Christian Ponder (hip) – came out of the game no worse for the wear, according to Vikings Head Coach Adrian Peterson.

The news wasn’t so good for a pair of other starters, though, as Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier disclosed at his customary Monday press conference that both CB Asher Allen and LG Steve Hutchinson sustained concussions. Allen and Hutchinson will follow the NFL’s concussion protocol in their recovery, and their status for this weekend’s game against the Washington Redskins is unknown.

Frazier also said that S Jarrad Page is dealing with a hamstring injury. Outside of those five names, though, Frazier said that no other Vikings sustained injuries that will prevent them from practicing this week. The Vikings and Redskins will be operating on a short week this week because most of the NFL’s games will be played on Saturday.

Through three quarters, the Vikings were outgained in total yards, 480-98, and first downs, 29-5. They went on to give up a team record 36 first downs and set the NFL mark for consecutive games without an interception (nine). Since the Vikings’ last interception, teams have thrown for 2,447 yards and 25 touchdowns.

    From the above article …

It sounds like Chad Greenway agrees with most of us fans.

Linebacker Chad Greenway also said lack of effort wasn’t the problem.

“You can write articles and do whatever you want,” Greenway said. “You can break down every player. Good, bad or ugly. But we just aren’t good enough as a team, as a group. Offensively, defensively and special teams, from the No. 1 on the roster to the last man on the roster. We just aren’t good enough. It’s as simple as that.”

    chris’tian ponder- 13 TDS, 12INTs, yds 1757, RTG 72 in 8 games.

Ponder is doing fine for a rookie … if Ponder had 6 more games hed have the most TD pa’sses of the rookie QBs

Im tired of the Ponder haters , your analysis of Ponder is ridiculous and unfounded. Ponder is doing a good job for a rookie with no offensive line.

Our offensive line has given up 45 sacks. That doesnt include hurries , hits, or knockdowns. 45 sacks is the 4th worst in the league. I know Mike Wobs feels thats a solid OL but its not it awfull.

QBs and Coaches dont win games. The NFL is a team sport and a RT or LT is nearly as important as a QB.

    Troy Aikman … HoF QB … 9TDs-18INTs … 52% completion … 1,749 yards … 55.7 rating … 1-10 record

    Drew Brees … 2nd season ( didnt start as rookie ) … 17TDs-16INTs … 60% completions … 3,284 yards … 76.9 rating

    Peyton Manning … 26TDs-28INTs … 3,739 yards … 56% completions … 71.2 Rating

    Ponder haters are unknowledgeable

Mike Wobs why are the people in the media focused on Ponders play when questioning Frazier?

Are they really that unaware of the real issues on this team?

an OL giving up 45 sacks ranked 4th worst in the NFL is clearly affecting Ponders play … but they seem to ignore the real issue why ????

Given a competent O-line, Ponder will shine !!! He shows glimpses of greatness, just think going into next year he’ll have a full preseason, which will definiteky help, hopefully the Vikings get at least one good WR to compliment Harvin.

I am a little scared to read through the rest of the article. Is this the worst error yet? Oh, maybe when we played Washington in your article when we were playing Atlanta?

  19. By Mark B on Dec 19, 2011 | Reply

Get Ponder some help!! QB’s need someone (other than Percy) to throw the football to and someone to pass protect for him! On a related note, does anyone else find it odd that they don’t throw quick checkdowns to AP? Would seem logical to get the ball to your best players in space – just a thought.
Another issue could be all the “packages” – we are so busy swapping players in and out that the QB can’t get any rhythm down at all. Start the game with Manny and Devin outside, Percy in the slot, Rudolph on the left end (chip on his way out) and AP in the backfield. Leave the personnel alone (except for maybe the TE and wide out spots – maybe) for the first half at least – it would allow for balance between running and passing and keeps your best players on the field!

And Wobby – hide the tag cloud, getting quite cluttered and ugly. Especially with some of the old names that show up there (Moss, Rice, Leber, Bevell and Taylor just to name a few)!

Wobby is trying to keep things positive. It isn’t helpful to keep saying the OL sucks and keep saying that. The constant questions he gets are about the OL and Def Secondary. The fact the OLine doesn’t always suck and the Def secondary has had some success keeping WR from getting the deep receptions. It’s his job to point those successful times in focus when we are so down on the players. I have been in most of the chats since start of the season and you can see he is just as tired of losing as the rest of us. He does a good job and we should cut him a break. He is not the problem with this team.

  29. By TITANIUM TITUS on Dec 19, 2011 | Reply

I have no problem with Wobby’s positive spin; in fact, I believe it is healthy. What can we actually do about this season? We are not on the team– I am sure the players are upset as well– many of the better ones are crying at night– they don’t have unlimited years to get to a Superbowl.

  31. By Mike B. on Dec 19, 2011 | Reply

I personally would like to give the benefit of the doubt that if we can solidify the LT position and RG position our OL issues will get much better. I agree with some others Loadholt would play better if the rest of the OL is playing well. Kleinsasser will most likely retire this offseason and Shank will probably need to much salary to keep esp since we have Rudolph and Riesner on board now. Defensive Secondary is a big issue and may take more than 1 year to get well. We still need one deep threat WR. I am sure the rest of you will agree with this. I could get into who or who will not be our starting QB, but I will leave it that we don’t need another QB unless we are replacing Sage next year.

  32. By Mike B. on Dec 19, 2011 | Reply

I have to disagree with Coach Frazier you don’t build your team around a single player. You need to have a Running game to make the passing game effective. One think in the last few years is apparent. The passing game is going to get you wins. YOu can have holes in your Defense, but without a passing game you will not be successful. This is not the 80s football anymore. Defense doesn’t necessairly get you a championship.

Every week I sit in front of the TV and in between Jameson sips wonder in disbelief “Can that many of our guys be that bad, week in and week out”? Is that even possible, two years from a NFC Championship game?” Can our scouts and coaches be that clueless in understanding what it takes to compete in the NFL? Then I look at the Colts and Rams and wonder, what would it take for this team to beat either one of those two teams? Could they score more than 20? Then my mind drifts back to the “good old days” where I could sit back with my drink and watch the Vikings completely dominate the other team – but with each great play made a sense of impending dread would take over..something’s not right I would say and little by little, the team would find a new and excruciating way to blow the game.. Ah yes..the good old days when we were just known as the biggest underachievers in the NFL..Calling Marty Shottenheimer…C’mon Vikes let’s try to win these last two..my kidneys can’t take no more!

Those who think our current coaching staff should remain the same, I’ve just one question, have you seen any improvement from game 11 of last year and now? I know I haven’t. NONE. Not even a tiny little bit.

  36. By Mike B. on Dec 19, 2011 | Reply

@yourmama The problem is that if you fire the entire coaching staff the Wilfs are on the cuff for their salaries. Wilfs are already have to pay Childress 5M next year. This will probably mean no changes till next year.

  37. By vikoholic on Dec 19, 2011 | Reply

No way I’m ready to pull the plug on these guys yet. A coach in his first full year and a bunch of great player in there first, second or third year. The Vikes were a play or two away from beating the Chargers, Bucs, Lions (twice), Chiefs, Packers (first game) and Broncos. 1. A good draft, 2. some free agency moves, 3. another year with a lot of our existing guys having a chance to gell and 4. a few more plays breaking our way and this could be a 10-6 team in a year. We’ve all seen teams go from worst to first in a year. If nothing changes next year, blow it up, but I’d hate to completely overhaul the whole franchise now only to have to go through the learning curve from square one next year. I hope the core of this team is back next season with a litte more experience and some key roster additions.

Wow, sorry I came so late to this party. Yea, I’d say identifying the head coach as Adrian Peterson qualifies as the biggest blunder yet on Vikings.com, not to say that it doesn’t have good competion. But what’s the point anymore? The Vikings appear to have lost all motivation to provide the fans with quality at any level.

Jared Allen said it best after the game, when he was benched in favor of some young rookies. He questioned the decision, implying that there was no need to rest him for for playoffs or anything else. He has a legitimate shot at breaking a record this year, and still has all the drive to try to get it done, but thoughtlessness by the team is only making it that much more unlikely.

@Fred You’re wrong about not needing a WR. Other teams don’t respect our ability to go down field without a deep threat wide out. We need that prototypical tall and fast wide out and then they won’t keep 8 or 9 in the box. This will open up the pass and run game. The rest is obvious. And yeah most of us do know what’s wrong with this team. Your ranting needs to be more focused on GM. BTW this new GM may just get rid of the coaches you are so sure we don’t need to fire. I am sure you already knew that. Your just stamped out Hire A GM is useless and looks like banter. Yes We need a GM as the Owners are not Football managers and they need a GM with a football background to get this ship righted. You only need to post this once a day to provide a point. I do think that the Wilfs should be getting the issue now as Fox TV has dropped Vikings games in South West Minn and Easter South Dakota.

I’m well aware of our oline issues. However, I think it would be more beneficial to draft a cb first. Oline wont go in the first round. Lets get a good cb first, then oline second. Our secondary is depleted beyond recognition. If we can get a good guy in the secondary, players like sherels will get better. We need one awesome guy to help the others out. Then we can start turning it over because with our pass rush, opposing qbs will either get sacked or hurried which can cause an int. We need a new offensive coordinator as well. Musgrave is just not getting it done….EVER

If you cannot stop the other team from scoring you cannot win. If they can stop you from scoring and you cannot stop them from scoring you do not win. This has been true from the start of time, to present day. Defense wins games; the Offense gets all the glory.

@DSR the Packers also lost their starting LT, RT, and back-up RT. So by not PROTECTING their Qb is what lead to their Defence having to do what they are not built for keeping them in a game. The Packers D plays best with a lead just like the Colts D. So with less then great Qb play their D will let them down. So in the draft if LT Kalil is gone draft CB Morris Claiborne and try an get Bills LT Bell in FA.

We as fans know where to start and the obvious choice in the 1st round would be Kalil out of USC!! 2nd round should be a guard, most likely Osemele!! We are in need of so much, but there’s just not enough picks in the draft!! We need to make the best of these picks, because some of these guys will probably start!! Other needs are NT, MLB, WR, SS and corners!! Free agency is your best bet for a WR, as well as one corner!! The Wilfs and Viking management have there work cut out for them in the offseason!! Do your homework and you can rebuild this team in a year or two!!!
