What is bill musgrave seeing when the vikings get in the RED zone. He seems unable to call plays that generate points; let alone touchdowns?

Why should I keep watching a team that just doesn’t show any motivation? From the players to the owners. They just don’t seen to care. What do think is going to happen? Are we going to see big changes or do you think it”s going to be more of the same?

Mike do you think Phil Loadholt would be better at guard. He seems to get out played at right tackle in just about every game.

Are we going to do anything about our swiss cheese O-line? We need big names in the saftey and corner positions! Give Harvin and J. Allen raises… knocking off everyone elses check.

Should I be optimistic for next season or my beloved team will still be terrible next year? This season is such a dissapointment.

Can Webb complete easy throws in practice?

  7. By KLAWZ on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

Play both Webb and Ponder during every game…..this will keep teams on their toes. This will also give Ponder a break from being hit on every play, and to see if Webb can make throws

Mike it seems to me ever since Leslie frasier has been here our secondary has been poor. We have always been able to stop teams from running on us. Now we can’t stop anything run or pass. Do you think we need to change our defensive philosophy going into next year?

I see you guys finally benched Ponder. Is Webb the flavor of the month?? If he turns out to be a bust, which he most likely will, whose left?? I feel sorry for you guys. Just when you see a glimmer of hope, that hope is dashed!! Oh well. This will be going on for YEARS!!

Does the word ‘merit’ mean anything in this organization? Joe Webb brought this team back from a disaster! Doesn’t Joe Webb deserve a chance to be the starting quarterback? Yet Frazier said that Ponder is their starting quarterback! Say what?! Some advice Joe….get away from this organization and go to a team that will give you a chance to be a starting quarterback in this league!

    Dear Mike,
The number 1 concern I have for this Vikings team, if nothing changes in the front office and the personal department, is that the Vikings well end up with the Number 2 or 3 Pick in next years draft and the PICK becomes a BUST… I have little faith in Rick Speilmans’ draft track-record does provide some great first round picks… SOooo the question I have for you is how do u see the Vikings season ending realistically,…(2-14 is a fair bet)?? Well Jared Allen be a Vikings next season or well he demand a trade to be with a real contending team?

  20. By MikE on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

I know there’s no magic formula, but is there any way to explain the complete lack of interceptions by the secondary? How can an NFL team go weeks without being in position to pick off a pass? Of course, if they are in position more than likely the pass is dropped. Do you recall another season of such futility when it coes to interceptions?

  21. By DesertViking on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

Musgrave’s packages seem to keep our best players off the field on crucial situations. Why is that?

  22. By kdizzle on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

what is our goal for next season concerning our offensive line and secondary? I feel ponder is promising but letting him get pushed around could just make him gun shy.

  23. By MichaelB on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

Joe Webb threw 12 completions in 13 attempts – and no interceptions! Joe Webb led this team with his legs AND his arm. He is a raw talent and needs the reps out on the field to develop his skills. Unfortunately, the reps Webb should be getting are going to Ponder. If the Vike’s have any brains they trade Ponder for some picks for the 2012 draft and build around Joe Webb as their starting quarterback.

I wouldn’t be against having Joe Webb and C. Ponder splitting the quarterbacking duties. Most coaches would consider us CRAZED for even mentioning it.

Clearly, like so many people have said, QUARTERBACK is not a problem on the Vikings.

Now if we could get the IDIOT radio people to focus on OBTAINING SOME DBs AND OLs.

It’s really surprising how common some of these radio people are with their opinions. You would think being in the Vikings lockerroom and at practice would
    give them superior knowledge.

IN MANY CASES THE RADIO PEOPLE ARE IDIOTS. It’s almost as surprising as our 6 VPs, and their uncommon lack of common sense.

Mike, is there anything that can be done about the botched non-call on the last play of the game? Can the officiating crew be fined or fired? That was a blatant face mask and it could affect the playoff picture. How does the league handle things like this? It really looks bad for our sport. How can anyone trust the honesty of the NFL after this? Don’t they have people in the booth to catch this kind of thing? The Lions already have a reputation for dirty players, now the whole system is suspect if this isn’t addressed! Pay-off for playoff or what?

Mike Wobschall: why doesn’t frazier or the front office trust, believe, or have faith in Joe Webb? He is a terrific player, who has the skill set and potential to develop into a very special QB in the league, if the front office puts faith in Webb and gave him the opportunity to be the starter. Everyone knows Webb was put into a losing situation, because the Vikings drafted Ponder as a first round pick, Basically saying that no matter what Ponder was going to be at worst the back up and everyone knows it, then having them go out and waste a late round draft pick on McNabb, all but assured that Webb was going to be with the scout team. So I’ll repeat the question again, why doesn’t frazier or the front office trust, believe, or have faith in Joe Webb?

secondary has to either improve dramatically, or have a complete make-over next year…..the team and fans shouldnt have to watch in agony every time the oppostiion throws a pass downfield, knowing it will very likely be a completion or if defended, a defensive penalty will be called. Who remembers the last secondary interception??? was it this year???

will Frazier be kept around if the record ends up 2-13? Obviously its not all his fault, but we didnt allow Steckel to stick around with even 3 wins…..

  65. By CanadianVF on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

I can answer the question why we do not get any interceptions in our secondary. It is because we never are able to get close enough to the oppositions recievers when the ball is thrown to them. The other teams recievers run through our different zone areas untouched and are usually wide open. Our defensive backs keep letting the reciever go in behind them, thinking the next guy is back there and he will take him, usually that guy is way late coming over or not there at all. We really like to play this especially when they come into the red zone, it makes it so much easier to score. When for the love of might are we going to fix this, is it the talent, the system or both ?

Well I hope the Joe Webb fan club is finally happy. As far as I am concerned as far as the future goes we took a step backward today. Ponder had a tough day today, it is going to happen with rookies. But if you think Webb should get a chance to be our franchise quarterback you are sadly mistaken. He is athletic, he can run and jump over things etc. but he will never be a starting quarterback in the NFL. He cannot throw the ball consistently. That split second decision making of where to deliver the ball is a gift and some athletes can do it and some cannot. Percy Harvin you are amazing and should be headed for the Pro Bowl, what a dynamic offensive player you are.Has he stepped up this year or what ? To all you Toby Gerhart haters who thought he was a bust and should be traded for draft picks you should be ashamed of yourselves. Toby I love the way you put a hurt on people, keep running north and south ! Finally can we get Rudolph involved in the offense ? He has incredible hands, lets start using them. Peace Out !

From the looks of things right now, it’s conceivable that we can pull off two more wins this season. One against Washington and Chicago. If that happens, then we would likely drop from the #2 draft spot to the 5th, although it’s possible that we go all the way down to #8. However, from the look of the schedules of teams currently sitting with 4-wins,I think that there’s only 2 that won’t be able to add one more by season’s end.

Still gotta hope that we pull a 3-game upset though, and stay solid at the #2 spot in the draft…and here I never thought I’d actually be in favor of seeing the Vikings lose…

  79. By ConcernedFan on Dec 12, 2011 | Reply

I am sorry to all of you Webb fans but we cannot start him as a quarterback and expect any wins. The fact of the matter is that with the time hes been in this Vikings organisation he has not improved one bit. He has raw talent that makes him a dynamic player on our offense but he is not a good quarterback. If you all don’t remember he came in as a wide receiver that we transformed into a QB. The Vikings had good intentions trying to get him to become a better QB but he just doesn’t have the smarts to run the offense. Don’t get me wrong, he is a very talented player but he just isn’t a good QB. Look at his accuracy, he cannot hit his target on a consistent basis. That is the way it has been since he started and he has shown no improvement. THESE ARE THE REASONS WE DON”T START HIM ON A REGULAR BASIS. I know you have little faith in Ponder at the moment but you can’t dispute the fact that he is a rookie making rookie mistakes. This is a building season. Let the Ponder build! Other than that I would like to ask Mike, Is it safe to say that all the blame cannot be placed on Jamarca Sanford #33, it seems as though he is always the one stuck covering for the cornerbacks that stay up and let the receivers whiz past without a single touch? Some of these plays they have no reason to stay up and should be running with the receivers.

  80. By Matthias on Dec 12, 2011 | Reply

Ponder was already injured from the last game. During this game he was hurried or sacked most of the time (2 fumbles). And don’t forget that he didn’t have 1st squad practice before Friday…

Joe Webb looked good, still he over- and under-threw wide open receivers, like Ponder did…

I am happy that we got such great talent at QB and I am seeing a bright future for both of them. Go Vikings! Draft some O-linemen.

Tough loss, but I was really happy to see Joe Webb play so well. But i’m wondering if people are going to start showing Toby some respect now, he’s a great back and has filled in nicely to the running game. Not too many backs in the league can consistently produce when they’re offensive line is so bad. Toby’s no Peterson, but he’s been way better than he’s getting credit for.

  83. By animal26 on Dec 12, 2011 | Reply

to those of you that are using the excuse of ponders bad play on him missing the majority of the time with the first string offense, that is a pretty weak excuse. Yes, it’s true that it probably played a part in it, but still ,him tossing the ball into triple coverage, staring down the player he was going to throw to, were the main factors in his bad play and those things are square on his shoulders, not him missing time with the first string. missing snaps in practice with the first string shouldn’t take away from a QB’s ability to read defenses. Frazier has to take part of the blame also, for putting ponder in there, knowing that Ponder had very little reps with the offense and Webb had the majority of it. The overthrows were there and that is something that was expected with him missing practice, but the int’s were ponders fault and his alone.

You guys know that we are going to take a position that we don’t need in the draft this year. We always do we got lucky in drafting Harvin and Peterson in there drafts because we didn’t have a choice in the front office to pick anyone else.
We will most likely ed up with Peyton Manning as our QB next year witch isn’t bad unless you look at our OL witch stinks like my gym socks after i work out. We need to address the OL and the DB’s in the draft or free agency this year. I think that we also need to address the WR position as well. Harvin is doing everything himself running and catching. He cant do it all by himself get him some help so we can contend next year. Webb is a very good QB a better one then Ponder he had proved it today. I think that we need to play Webb next Sunday against the Saints to throw them off there game a little bit. I think that Ponder is a good for nothing you want to call a football player. He is not smart at all he makes poor decisions with the ball and you guys still start him as our starting QB. No go get McNabb back he at least knew what he was doing. So throw Ponder out to sea and lets sea if he can swim. That is what needs to happen for us to be good next season. So do these and fast. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO VIKINGS.

For all you fans bashing Ponder getting interceptions, he’s a rookie. He’s going to make mistakes. Even the games greats had bad rookie seasons. He’s shown flashes of great potential and has good accuracy. He’s just making some wrong reads right now. It doesn’t help that he is running for his life on half the plays either. We are desperate for a centre and LT. Then Charlie Johnson can replace Herrera at guard. You can’t judge a QB in his first season when he has ZERO time to make any reads before being on his aZZ.

As for Sanford at safety, feel free to bash him all day…he’s just terrible. He can stay as a backup to learn from a vet we sign from free agency!

Mike Wobschall – Is there any news on Chris Cook? Will he be returning next year? I feel that he was was progressing nicely this year and it would be a shame to see him leave for something non-football related. I’m not condoning his behaviour but i’m sure he’s sorry and will be willing to work hard in the future. Having Cook, Winfield and either high draft pick/free agent would be quite solid.

Mike Wobschall – Hi Mike, I read your column a few weeks ago about the rookies from the lower rounds and it mentioned not using certain players in case it endangers the health of our QB of the future/running backs. Well i’m pretty sure Love and Fusco could play now considering that battering Ponder continued to get with Hutch and Herrera playing. We need to follow Chicago’s lead and draft 1st round O-line for the next 2/3 years. What do you think?

It would of been nice to see Webb throw the ball to a receiver when that defender jumped off sides, but learn from errors and hopefully improve from it.

if the vikings had a better recored and were fighting for a playoff spot would AP have been able to play yesterday? With that being said will he play this weekend. It would be nice to see him play the last 3 games . One of the few things besides Harvin and Ponder and Allen worh watching anymore this year

Hey Mike- Do you feel that Ponder confidence has been rattled or is it more likely that he is just to beat up given the O-line inability to protect and give a decent amount of time to make a play? Also do you see major changes next year as far as the starting O-line? I sure hope there is IMO!

I’ve said it before and now other fans see it to. We didn’t really have to draft a QB in the first round and this organization never had trust in Webb from the start. We were better off filling in a major need like DB or O line. I would’ve been happy with the team if they gave Webb who brought life to a losing team last season a chance to fail this season instead of writing him out. Look if Webb didn’t work out we could’ve drafted a QB this draft. I have no problem with Ponder but with the O line that we have it won’t be long til fans want him out like t-jack. Webb came in and fixed the mess Ponder made and people keep talking about him not being a good passer but how much better did Ponder look yesterday passing he should’ve threw more than three picks if the Lions caught the other two and I saw a deep pass where Webb hit his Target right on point is it Webbs fault that the receiver dropped the ball. Frazier keeps saying Webb has a chance to be a good QB for us but how can he when the idiot Frazier already crowned Ponder his future. Our organization is full of idiots who lack a good football IQ from the top to bottom. I say trade Webb so he can get a real chance somewhere else so he can show the world how stupid the vikings organization is.

It seems like there hasn’t been any adjustments on the defensive side of the ball!! What your doing isn’t working with the talent level you have on this team!! Why do you stick with the same defensive alignment when it’s not working??

  93. By 61vikings on Dec 12, 2011 | Reply

    @ Klawz
All Joe Webb did is run for 109 yards, throw for 84 yards with the worst offensive line in the NFL!! He came in late in the third quarter and nearly put up 21 points!! Once again, our inept offensive line couldn’t block for him, which allowed the Lions to knock the ball loose!! The refs. missed the call on the Lions grabbing Joe Webb’s facemask, which would have given us another shot at a touchdown!!! This is what 2-11 teams do, find a way to lose the game!! Just when I thought I’d seen everything, that play happened!! This team week in and week out, just looks so ill-prepared for games and that falls on the coaching staff!! If we give this coaching staff another year, I believe we will be in for another losing season!!!

  94. By CbusVikesfan on Dec 12, 2011 | Reply

How much do you put Ponder’s struggles yesterday on his hip injury? Going forward, what is his status? And what exactly does it mean that the coaching staff started Ponder instead of Webb?

  95. By Mike J on Dec 12, 2011 | Reply

@ Canadian and any other haters who post stupid opinions on Webb. Are you really questioning a man’s accuracy who haven’t played that position all season. The same thing was said about Warren Moon, Mike Vick, Cam Newton and they proved youdoubters wrong. They said Tebow couldn’t play QB in this league and hed proving those same idiots wrong he’s leading his team to the playoffs. They said Jake Locker had the worst accuracy of the QB’s that came out of his class but that didn’t stop the Titans from drafting him in the first round he looked accurate yesterday to. They said RG3 was just an athlete at the QB position but he proved those doubters wrong this season. Just because Webb is athletic does not mean he can’t win for us he beat the eagles last year, and I believe if he started yesterday we would’ve blown the Lions out if you remember what the score was before he came in and how he brought us back. He must’ve been doing something right Tebows far from being a good passer but he’s a winner at the QB position. And how did they give him a chance the man has been a scout team QB or a stunt dummy for us ever since being drafted thats not being given a chance he only get real reps when were desperate. I bet if he was given a chance he would prove his doubters wrong to. If you say he’s not a QB then you can say that about Ponder to because we only won one game with him starting just like Webb the difference is he’s getting the chance that Webb never and won’t ever get as long as he’s on our team. The guy comes in and throw a touchdown and run for another and would’ve won the game for us if the refs didn’t blow the call it only took him a quarter to bring us back so you can’t tell me if given a chance he can’t be successful at the position you haters. What did Ponder do that he didn’t? Turn it over five times or is it because he set our franchise record for yards as a rookie you do remember the out come of that game right the pick sealed the deal, or is it the fluke game we won against a Panthers defense that’s actually worst then ours and anyone who watched that game knows we won by luck. I think Ponder can be a good QB in this league and I think the same about Webb until he proves me wrong.

Pulling Ponder was the dumbest decision by the coaching staff this season and it’s been a very bad season. It’s one thing to take him out of the game if he is to banged up to play, but it sure didn’t appear that way seeing Ponder standing on the sideline. The past 2 games was bad enough to damage Ponders confidence with all the Int’s he threw, but to pull him out of the game and put in Webb? Are they not suppose to find ways to boost his confidence not tear it down even more? I could had cared a less if he had thrown 10 Int’s in that game, he needed to stay in that game, there was nothing to lose or risk in that game to feel there was a need to pull him, granted it would have been fun to knock the Lions out of playoff hopes, but it was a very bad move. In the presser it was obvious that Ponder felt very indifferent about it, good job coach.

Just the Facts. Joe Webb is an electric QB to watch. But his style of play can only go so far. There has never been a running style QB win a super Bowl, only pure passer’s with quick feet a nifty speed. Joe Webb’s only chance at using all of his talent and becoming an Elite player in the NFL is as a wide reciever. That is where Webb will find his Multi Million dollar contract, and that is where he would be a constant threat for opposing Deffences. They should have called a QB run play on the 1 yard line, Webb could have easily jumped over there heads and stretched the ball out over the goal line. As a WR they could run and end around and Webb could throw or run. So as a WR he can still be useed to pass the ball occasionaly.

Mike J. You are not like some of the other “Mikes”…You spreak the truth and back it up with facts!!!Webb is just as good as Ponder ever thought he is…Frazier of course still has his head up a Donkey’s rear and/or doesn’t know what a good QB Joe can be…

Frazier: Play Ponder the 1st Half…

Play Webb the 2nd Half, to clean up Ponders mistakes…

I agree with one of the above posts that stated we should NOT have drafted Ponder but instead addressed OL and DB issues. Webb should have been our starter all season long. Where is the common sense? HE NEEDS EXPERIENCE!!!!! He will never get it with LF, sorry coach….you need to go. Webb needs time/reps to mature. How can that happen when he doesn’t get 1st team reps in practice. He only gets brought in when the starter gets injured (last year/this year). Or when you bring him in at receiver and EVERYONE knows….you aint foolin anybody. Our poor excuse of an offensive coordinator has zero and I mean no imagination, he needs to go. At the very least let Webb and Ponder share duties. Joe Webb deserves much more than he has been given.

The biggest weakness of the Vikings is the Secondary. Rebuild that first with the rst and 2nd round selection for the next 2 draft’s. O line and D line with the 3rd and 4rth round selections. starting next year , Use Joe Webb as a WR, or trade him to a team that needs a starting QB and aquire a 2nd and 4rth round pick for him. Webb can be the Deep threat WR that we need. So that frees up a 1,2 or 3 round draft pick that we would have used this year for a WR. we could then wait till next year to draft a calvin Jhonson type WR.

the worst start in viking history, how do you top that ? is this the future of thisteam? aside from a few players who know how to play, this team lacks skill at the lowest levels of play. a direct reflection of lack of coaching skills put forth by frazier and his crew of none coaching cronies.if the vikings front office has’nt told almost every coach and player that they are playing to keep their jobs,I belive we fans will suffer for years . what say you

First of all I don’t need to say much about the secondary or ol. It’s pretty much common knowledge by now. I agree Chris Cook was looking pretty good earlier this year. We haven’t had much help blocking defenses since Chester Taylor sadly left. He was a pretty good complete back. Toby runs alot like him, or the late Leroy Hoard. A powerback in this league can wear-out defenses, and they’ll respect you more. That’s all old stuff, anyway. At the end of last year I liked what I saw from Webb. I sincerely thought the Vikes org. could build on him. True, we could’ve used another q’back. The Vikes are definitely a different team w/ him at the helm. I still think we could use him for a myriad of option, reversal, and end around plays, with the talent we have in the backfield. It would keep the defenses guessing. I think we could have put Webb in sooner, yesterday. He could’ve played some more at qb this year, too. I agree that Ponder and Webb feasibly could share the duties in a game. I wish Webb would’ve ran right on the last play of the game he had white shirts leading to the end zone w/ no opposition around. Last Dec. the Lions were starting to look competitive, finally. I think we are approaching the same status, as long as we don’t shoot ourselves in the foot!!!! I’m thinkin that both coordinators may have to do more than what they have been doing. Whatever, that is IDK~ All I have for now, later bretheren~

Will the Vikings pick up another QB in the Offseason so Webb can focus on being our WR/KR going forward – ala Cribbs. It would be nice if he could focus on being on the field more often, even for his own career. I for one would love to see him running around with Peterson and Harvin out there on a more consistent basis. I think Ponder should be the starter still, but it is just such a shame to let Webb’s talent waste like that.

  105. By Viking33 on Dec 12, 2011 | Reply

Ponder probably shouldn’t have started that game yesterday, with the injury he had. He didn’t look smooth out there and his velocity was down on his throws significantly. That being said, he is going to have to learn to play with pain in the NFL and I hope that he took away something from the game. Early comments here I don’t agree with, I think the offense is continually building an identity and is being creative as well. Also – to suggest that the team was not motivated yesterday……I just don’t see that at all. Looking forward to a successful draft with our new GM (for Frederick) – best players available in the positions of OL – DB – LB – WR

MichaelB – What game did you watch that you saw Webb go 12 for 13? Game I saw had him throw 12 for 23. He missed simple throws that a QB should be able to come in cold off the bench and make. His accuracy reminds me of a certain veteran QB that was benched earlier and recently released.

He IS a talented runner, though – but so was Ponder before he got hurt.

@ Mike J, I am sorry you think my opinions are stupid, they are just my opinions certainly not shared by all Viking fans. I do not hate you or Webb or anyone else. I said early in the season when the cry was going out to bench McTurf and what a dumb decision it was to bring in another washed up quarterback that he was a bridge to Ponder so that he could get his feet under him. He did not get ota”s and other workouts because of the labour stoppage and he needed time to learn the system and get used the level of play in the NFL. I said it made perfect sense last summer to bring in a veteran because if we just threw Ponder into the fire and he struggled he could lose his confidence and we would ruin him. That look on his face standing on the sidelines yesterday when he got pulled concerns me. You think Webb is better and has more potential and has not been givin a fair shake, play him the rest of year. But if he doesn’t play well and loses the last three games of the season you better not be screamin to throw Webb under the bus. In the what have you done for me lately world of the NFL you cannot have it both ways.

Ponder cant and will not be able to do it in the NFL.
No accuracy, plus a real lack of arm strenght.
Play Webb an have faith in him like people have faith in Ponder.
This organization is lost along with half of these bloggers.
Excuses, excuses , & more excuses for Ponder. But if he would have lead this
comeback the talk would have been all about how great he is (sike!)Blah Blah Blah.I do agree that this org. will draft a player who wont help the team
(D-lineman)How is Sanford still starting at Safety. Griffith looks like he wants out with his play. why not put Ponder at Wr or TE.

as the draft order stands now, are we 2nd or are the rams 2nd? I’m a lifelong Vikes fan, and never thought I would want them to lose, but we need the 2nd or 3rd pick in the draft. OL and DB’s please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ponder will be fine he needs to stop locking in on 1 guy and learn how to use his whole body when he throws

  111. By kdizzle on Dec 12, 2011 | Reply

people keep saying ponder has no accuracy that is not the problem, his accuracy is fine much better than mcnabb for sure! his problem is he is so rushed to get rid of the ball because of the poor o’line and being a rookie he is trying too hard to win and is having trouble reading defense, he keeps trying to force plays. this is called growing pains many of the greats had poor starting years and they probably had a much better offensive line. hang with it. pick the qb and support him he will get better I promise and in 2 seasons if he still throws this many interceptions then we can all hate him but until then lets take advantage of this lost season and get the growing pains out of the way.

As for webb, pick a position for him and stick with it. the guy has talent for sure if we cant use it lets trade him and try to work on our secondary or offensive line.
