Peterson Inactive Again For Vikings, But Ponder Will Start

Posted by Ryan Cardinal on December 11, 2011 – 10:30 am

Adrian Peterson will miss his third straight game due to the ankle sprain he suffered on Nov. 20 against the Raiders.  Head Coach Leslie Frazier said Peterson made good progress this week, so hopefully that bodes well for his chances of getting  back in the lineup next Sunday when the Vikings host the Saints at Mall of America Field.  Toby Gerhart will again start in place of Peterson.

The good news is that Christian Ponder, who — like Peterson — was questionable on the injury report, will start today despite suffering a hip pointer last Sunday vs. Denver.

Here is the full list of  today’s inactives for the Vikings:

RB Adrian Peterson, CB Chris Cook, LB Xavier Adibi, OL Brandon Fusco, OL DeMarcus Love, TE Allen Reisner, and DE D’Aundre Reed.

Lions inactives are as follows: RB Kevin Smith, DT Nick Fairly, CB Chris Houston, S Louis Delmas, DE Lawrence Jackson, QB Drew Stanton, and OL Leonard Davis.

Good to see almost everyone on the roster is healthy enough to play. Good choice on saving your franchise player and keeping the draft pick.

if ponder wasnt playing this would be a terrible game to watch

  3. By Deertracks on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

@greathalfbakedtator…Well then don’t watch it…Of course, when Ponder gets taken out of the game by the Detroit Def, you will then miss out on Webb’s play action…

  4. By VegasVike on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

Should have held them both out, no sense in risking a re injury to Ponder. We risk our potential franchise qb for what? Our 3rd win?

@25yearsvike…When did they let you out of Stillwater?

  6. By DFish on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

I’m not ganna lie, I was hoping Webb would start today. Ponder is good, but competition is better, I think one of the best things the team could do for Ponder is create something to let him know that he isn’t guarenteed the starting spot just because he was drafted in the first round.

  7. By dmesser on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

Ponder needs these last games of the 2011 season to get the bugs out for next year. He is a great talent, and will develop rapidly if he can avoid the injury bug.

We lose this game, we’ll be in great shape for the draft. Play hard but don’t expect a win. We play for the future now.

  9. By Deertracks on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

VegasVike…Frazier left his thinking cap on the kitchen counter…I like Ponder, and don’t want him injured again, but if he is, then we get to see what Webb has…

Lions thin at RB. Maurice Morris the only threat with Keiland Willams having 5 touches last 3 games and one fumble

    Maybe in the second half…

@Deertracks, HAHA! good point! In either case; always excited to watch the Vikes play. Win or lose, here’s to another awesome game! Can’t believe it’s week 14 already!

I hope we lose a close game. Theres no benefit to winning anymore. We’re 2-10.

  15. By vike0din on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

I hope Allen gets 3 sacks, harvin gets 2 TDs and over 100 yds, and a kickoff return, and I hope ponder throws 0 picks… and I hope we lose to have a good draft position… is that possible?

Interesting draft day trade idea Vikings trade thier 1st to the Dolphins for LT Justin Long and a 1st or 2nd round pick. Phins draft Qb Robert Griffin III while the Vikings draft CB Morris Claibourne in the 1st or CB Stephen Gilmore in the 2nd. The Vikings get one of the best young LT in Long and a good cover corner.

Didn’t Priefer tell him after he did that all last week. He started out playing well, now he plays worse each week. It’s time to at least act like we’re coaching, put Booker back there, and let’s quit this nonsense. Yeah, we’re bad. But you don’t have to advertise that we’re stupid and awful.

Gerhart is looking more and more comfortable. Rosenfels isn’t Jeff Hostetler, but he’ll walk the horse to the barn for the final 4 games. Ponder will be a successful QB in this league. He’s trying to make something happen, and he’s forcing it. Benching him would do less harm to his psyche than playing him under these conditions.

Tommy Kramer was such a fierce competitor, players played up to his level. I still can’t believe we picked Darrin Nelson over Marcus Allen???

Ponder, I’m sure will get better, the MOST important thing a bout a QB is not arm strength or legs but intelligence, and work ethic, look at BOTH Peyton and Eli Manning, Brees, and Brady… stop griping about the [probable] loss, is it pitiful, yes! Am I happy? no, but just like any team, this will correct itself, we will eventually have better coaches and hard working players. there’s a reason vikings fans are so loathed and it’s because of people who incessantly whine about how horrible things look, be patient and our time will come.

That’s what people don’t get about Tebow. IF he racked up 300 yards passing and the Broncos are 3-4 in his starts would people say, “Tebow is becoming a complete QB?” The Bronco’s would not be in the playoff hunt, so it wouldn’t matter.

Is it disappointing to be a viking fan, never to have won a super bowl, making the trip 4 times, but falling short every time, watching other teams like the steelers and patriots achieve greatness year after year? of course, It sucks to be so close so often, but think on this, two years ago, we had a team that nearly made it to the Superbowl, and now we complain, we have made it there before numerous times, the Cleveland browns have NEVER even made it to the Superbowl, much less won. If anyone deserves a Superbowl win it is them, so, resting on that, I don’t think we have the right to preach our patience.

The fact that some idiots on here are already calling for Ponder’s head is the reason this franchise has never drafted a QB and groomed him into a superstar. If he’s not Aaron Rodgers after 6 starts he’s useless, on to the next QB right? Give me a break. Mark my words, Ponder will be a good NFL QB, give it time

I agree Cannuck: Ponder will be great. But, he’s starting to force the ball due to a lack of time in the pocket. Webb isn’t a better QB, only a different style of player that can create more challenges at this stage in his development than Ponder. We need a line for either QB! Don’t sweat the exchange rate, your Ponder jersey is worth the money either way!

This game just proves to me that we reached for Ponder when there were better options available. We could have gotten an OLineman or the #2 CB out of the draft, and would have been able address a big need in the team while giving Webb a chance. Worst case scenario, we would have done poorly this year (we did anyways) and then be in a perfect situation to get a true franchise QB. I’m very skeptical about Ponder now, and he’ll have to do a lot to dig himself out the hole that he’s been dug into in order to regain respect as a valuable first-round pick.

Ponder wasn’t playing well at all today, I don’t blame the coaches from pulling him from the game, “injury” or not.

But the loss today wasn’t all due to Ponder’s turnovers, once again Jamarca Sanford looked lost out there and wasn’t where the team needed him to be and our kick coverage team allowed big returns to swing the momentum away from us.

I still believe Ponder has a bright future in Minnesota, but Webb did a great job coming off the bench.

Ponder did look good at times today…when he had a comfortable pocket to work with. It didn’t come often, and that was because the Lions realized that Ponder was making big mistakes when they took the pocket away from him. This makes a big argument for spending early picks in the draft to give the QB some protection.

That tactic worked against them when Webb was brought into the game. It shows a very different skillset, and would be great if the two players could be used to complement one-another in future games, but probably won’t happen because nobody uses 2-starting QBs.

  601. By DesertViking on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

I would really love for the Vikings to draft Justin Blackmon, but after watching this game we obviously need improve our o-line and d-backs. I’m tired of Jamarca and Griffin allowing touchdowns and Loadholt not being able to do a simple kick-slide.

  605. By Parody on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

Loadholt looked extra pathetic today. He wasn’t able redirect little blitzers who had to easily be a foot shorter than himself, and considerably slimmer. It almost looked as if he was afraid to touch those little guys. We need to find a replacement for him and move him inside to Guard. Tell him just to plant his feet and he might be able to provide the team with a little value.

It would have taken alot of pressure off of Ponder and he would have had more time to throw because Detroit would’nt be able to adjust quickly enough. The coaches need to realize what they have and not be afraid of making changes THROUGHOUT the game.

  610. By Parody on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

Smiff – Frazier was thinking that Ponder is the future of his team. If the young QB could have battled through the pain and played well today, it would have given him a lot to build on moving forward. I don’t think anybody would have expected him to perform as poorly as he did today.

With that though, Webb could have some good trade value. I don’t know how long Vick can remain the starter in Philidelphia, and if Andy Reid still has a job next year, you know he’ll be interested in Webb. He likes mobile QBs (Vick, Young, McNabb [before he got old]), and he could be looking at Webb to turn into his new Franchise QB. Maybe not, but Webb definitely has the skills to make you think about it.

All you need is Webb to QB on 4 drives-that will be plenty to keep opponents off-balanced. Ponder needs to have the bulk of the snaps, but the coaches can still showcase Webb’s abilities with a few sets.

  631. By Parody on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

Smiff – I was flabbergasted on draft day when they came around and announced that the Vikings had drafted the 4th QB in the draft. There were at least two guys on the board still who were top-ten talent, and I was giddy that we had a shot at either of them. Instead, we grabbed a guy who was projected to potentially sneak into the end of the first round when we already had a young QB who was showing potential to be a late-round gem.

After calming down, I studied up on Ponder and started to support him. I was on the verge of buying an expensive Ponder jersey, but the stores weren’t supplying them.

Today, however, Webb significantly outplayed Ponder. I think he had a better game today than Ponder has had all year. So I say let the better man start. Without an offensive line, that better man is Webb, no question.

Ponder is NOT the problem-our pourous defense and lax O-line is the cause of our failures.

TEBOW is getting smashed up by the bears def. its pretty entertaining.

  636. By Viking-ology on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

Get a new defensive coordinator, a better secondary, a re-vamped O-line, then lets see how Ponder does. I would suspect you will see a vastly improved QB.

  637. By Parody on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

Fred – From a similar argument, how can you make Joe sit on the bench? He has too much physical talent to be wasted like that! I’m begging for the team to select one of two options: use Webb frequently throughout the game (he should be in at least as many plays as the punter/kicker is) or trade him to a team that will believe in him! Either option will go a long way in improving this team.

Might I remind some of our fellow bloggers-With the exception of Tebow, Running QB’s do not work in a pass heavy league. Vick & Young (aka Dream Team) our just a few classic examples. Sure they might be good short term fixes, but once the league makes their adjustments, you will need a QB who can pass.

Give Ponder what he needs to have time to throw, and fix the worst secondary in the league, and you will see some W’s.

  641. By Parody on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

On another note, Gerhart could be a 1200 yard RB if he was starting for a team. In his 3-starts this year, he is averaging 75-yards per game. And that’s not even considering his receiving numbers.

In games that he didn’t get the start, he’s averaged 2.4 carries per game. Not nearly enough for a 1b running back. Chester Taylor was getting 6 carries per game after Peterson’s rookie year, and Gerhart is looking arguably better than Chester was for us.

We need to start using Gerhart and Webb more, even when the starters are healthy! These guys are playmakers. If you refuse to use them frequently in games, then you need to get some trade value out of them before it’s too late!

    @viking-ology
The difference between vick/young and webb/newton
vick/young are truly run first mentality throw second
webb/newton are throw first run second and also webb newton from what i have seen will be recognized as much more accurate passer at the ends of the careers. Webbs running instincts come from inexperience but you can tell how he sets up in the pocket he really wants to throw it first.

I will let Joe Webb start and see, give him a chance, Aaron Rodgers is a great QB bcas he moves around and the defense breaks like how Joe webb did today, just draft Justin Blackmon and move around enough to break defense and get points, build secondary with lot of DB’s and a fierce pass rusher opposite to Jared.

  644. By Parody on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

Mewelde Moore was a good backup RB for us. In 2007, he was #3 behind Taylor and Peterson. Then we let him walk over to Pittsburgh, where he became and remains a quality contributor for the team. What did we get for him? Butkis! This is a trend that needs to change.

  645. By Viking-ology on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

Kalishnakov-yes I understand what you mean but Detroit was in a prevent defense when Webb was throwing. When he was on the run he missed some wide open receivers. I still think he is a great talent for sure, but he should be a slash/type player (Kordell Stewart).

  646. By Kalishnakov on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

Im just on the boat that Webb hasnt quite acquired all the tools necessary to be the unquestioned leader of the offense. I believe by mid season he will have all those tools though. and if the vikings do pick up blackmon or trade down each round for an excess of picks to be used accordingly. at OL and DB less DB though if we get LaRon Landry from the redskins in FA and maybe a couple late round receivers, try to find a Marques colston type or Greg Jennings type

  648. By Viking-ology on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

Ponder has played a total of 7 games. Look back at Aikman and P. Manning. Ponder needs more games under his belt before he gets written off- There are many things that need to change for this team to turn it around.

  649. By Kalishnakov on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

yessir Vikingology, but Id say if by midseason next year ponder hasnt improved, its safe to say hes a bust, at which point I believe Webb can become the Latest late round QB to be a future hall of famer.

  650. By Mike R. on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

How about SS Bernard Pollard as FA? He comes from a defense that knows most of the time what to do and where to be on plays. He could school the Viking secondary on D.

ehhh @ Mike R Pollard is kind of a by product of Ed Reed and lewis and suggs, where as Landry is a Tier 1 DB like Ed reed in his younger playing days.

  655. By Immureglass on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

Our QB’s aren’t the problem with this team. Give Ponder and Webb a full off season to polish up their skills and an O-line that can buy them some time to make the right reads down the field and they should do great things for us for years to come. The team needs to focus on its true need: O-line, DB, and a GM (I threw the last one in there just for Fred)

  656. By Kalishnakov on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

@sandiamond if you really believe we dont need help over the top, you need to go back and look at whose allowed the most 20+ yards TD plays in the league. its the vikings. we need help over the top. A guy that will gut check you everytime your in his zone. he would easily become the top db of the NFC North. Such a pass happy division, he wouldnt know what to do with all the ints he would have his way with

  657. By Mike R. on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

    @ Kal

I like how he worked his way on to the field. Ravens mindset on D could rub off on the Vikes. Oh, Landry would be great pick up too. Anything is an upgrade!

  658. By Kalishnakov on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

we are more solid at CB than at S, well pending chris cooks trial. if he falls through than we really dont have much of a secondary at all.

  659. By Parody on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

Kalishnakov – I believe Sandia was making that comment on the supposition that an underperforming Griffin and an aging Winfield could be better used if one or both of them were transferred to safety. It’s an interesting idea, but probably not going to work out.

Cook is a big question mark, and I’d be surprised if he was allowed on the field at all in 2012. So, I’d say that we need to find at least one true playmaker for both safety and CB.

@parody nah I understood where sandiamond was going with that, however we need a game changer back there. LaRon landry is that guy. A much harder hitter than winfield and hes got real ball skills. great open field tackler.

Parody … I was thinking the same thing about Gerhart. Drafting as high as we will be we could easily send our 2nd rounder and gerhart to move back into the mid to late 1st round and get 2 first round picks. A stud LT and S/CB plus a couple free agent pickups this team we have would be good … we have been in the 4th quarter of a lot of games.

D@mn Tebow does it again lol..down 10-0 with a couple minutes to go. Tie it up at end of regulation. Win in OT on FG…

I enjoyed the game today. We shot ourselves in the foot but fought hard all game. Lots of heart on this team. Saw Asher Allen make a big tackle in the game. It is possible that this is lhe last season for Cedrick Griffin. Ponder played spotty dealing with injury. He threw into a crowd and that was bad. Webb did a great job as back up and changed the momentum of the game. Lions didn’t know how to react to 3 possible RB and keyed off the wrong guy at times. Really good second half of football. Fix the OL, get a talent at WR, and fix secondar we could be right back in the hunt next year. I feel very good about next year.

Again we need an apology from the vice president of officiating for a blatant head twisting yank on our quarterback Webb that was totally missed. What were these officials doing during that play how could they miss that, atrocious. There has to be some accountability with some of these goofy officials.

this team is a direct reflection of really bad coaching .a win would have cost us as a team .but was does losing cost us ?if frazier is the coach of this team next year,we will have three losing seasons in a row this guys a joke

  669. By Mike B. on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

I will agree with Bigfan1 if this penalty is called the game wouldn’t be over and since the ball was not in control at the time of the penalty it would have been vikings ball almost at the endzone. I think that would have put us over the top as we had Momentum.

  670. By Mike B. on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

@hippster I am hoping that this year is growing pains with the coaching staff. I too have doubts of the ability of Frazier to lead a team. Ziggy said he will be back next year, so I am hoping the ship is going the right way and we get some wins.

  671. By Craigmont Strong on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

You drafted Ponder when you already had a quaterback of the future(Webb)(could of used that draft pick to improve the offensive line or improve the weak secondary). You brought in McNabb who didn’t do anything to improve the team(should have had Webb playing from game one) and that still not including the mess the team had last year with letting a player(Moss),that could have helped the team, get away while loosing a late round draft pick in the process! Hope what the Vikings fans see happening with the Vikings, starting at the top, is not what we will be seeing for years to come!

  673. By Mike B. on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

@Craigmont Strong Ponder was drafted do to his ability to be a starting NFL QB. The lockout forced the issue with picking up McNabb. (a mistake) Webb, he is a talented athlete, but the coaches don’t see him as a starting NFL QB. As seen in the game today Webb missed receivers that were open which could have ended the game earlier. He is an exciting player and can make things heppen, but does that make him a starting QB. My answer is no and the Vikings Org has the same opinion. Your right why draft a QB in first round if you have your QB already on the teame. Answer you don’t have your starting QB already on the team. This my be a slap in your face but it is what it is.

  674. By Craigmont Strong on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

The Atlanta Falcons’ organization had the same thoughts about Brett Favre when he came into the league and let him go to the Green Bay Packers. We all know what a great career he has had there and Webb could be just as good if given a chance to play as a starter!

  675. By TITANIUM TITUS on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

It was a very good game– many teams that are 2-10 would not play so hard all the way to the end, especially on the road and after being down by so much. A lot to be excited about for next year– if you take out the two blowout games -bears and packers– we were in every game and I think lost by no more than a TD in every one.

  676. By TITANIUM TITUS on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

Someone here said they would like to see us knock out Brees and ruin the Saints’ chances of another ring. WHAT??? The only two teams that have ANY chance against the Packers would be the Saints and maybe the 49ers. I would rather see the Saints, or for that matter any NFC team over the Packers in the Superbowl.

  677. By TITANIUM TITUS on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

HEY– I just saw AZ beat the 49ers. Who can beat the Packers? The only possibility is the Saints– and any team must go thru Lambeau. This is a sad, sad season indeed.

I’ve said that Loadholt was a bust from his first few games. It takes very little understanding of the game to see that. I can’t even understand what made ‘the powers that be’ envision him as doing well at that position. WAAAY too large and slow to protect a QB.

  679. By Dueyz on Dec 11, 2011 | Reply

I’ve been defending Ponder since he stepped in. Until last week and this week. I’m not making any predictions on his distant future with us, but I am finding it hard to continue to give him ‘get out of jail free’ cards. I know the NFL is faster than college. I know we have a bad O-line. I know he’s a rookie. But I am beginning to question his ability to adjust in the NFL. I KNOW IT’S EARLY IN HIS CAREER, for those of you who will pull that card. I’ve been holding that card as long as he’s been starting. I’m not writing him off. However…his interceptions are concerning me. He sees similar things each week, but is not adjusting! NFL professionals accross the nation are beginning to question his abilities…..and so am I.

  684. By Parody on Dec 12, 2011 | Reply

Jon – If that’s the only choices we have, I say continue to lose…for this season anyways. Every win does nothing more than move us back in the draft order. I like seeing Webb play, as his freakish skills make the game much more interesting, but I’d rather give the team as good a chance as possible in patching up the weaknesses and making a turnaround next year. So 3-more games like we saw today would be perfect. It would show how much future potential we have, and give us a better chance of ensuring that potential.
