Peterson Scores But Later Leaves Game With Left Ankle Injury

Posted by Ryan Cardinal on November 20, 2011 – 1:03 pm

RB Adrian Peterson scored a first quarter touchdown vs. the Raiders, but early in the second quarter he suffered a left ankle injury.  His return to the game is questionable.  Peterson had 26 rushing yards, including his 12-yard score, at the time of the injury.

POSTGAME UPDATE – Head Coach Leslie Frazier said Peterson will have an MRI on Monday.

Watch full highlights as the Vikings late comeback attempt fell short as they fell to the Raiders by a 27-21 score on Sunday at Mall of America Field…

    This team is sooo cooked!

Fire Frazier at seasons end and lets just wipe this slate clean and start a 5 year plan!

HE HAS DONE NOTHING TO SAVE OR KEEP THIS HEAD COACHING POSITION!

WE ARE SO FAR BEHIND THE 8 BALL EVEN IN OUR OWN DIVISION!

Way too early to call Ponder a draft bust. I think he still looks promising…especially with a good O-line.

I also look forward to our top ten draft pick…we really need to rebuild.

Ponder was a draft mistake? Dude, no way. This is a passing leauge, and we got a passer. He will be very good, he’s at least pretty good right now.,

hahaha! c’mon people it’s obvious they are playing for top draft picks.

The safeties are pitiful. Stand around flat footed. Out of position. Slow to read the plays. On 81 for the raiders touchdown, one man out on the route. Sanford was late to cover over the top. I think they take downers before the game.

    WORST VIKINGS TEAM EVER!

  12. By Erik the Red on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

Honestly, Ponder is doing very well with what he has, which is nothing at all. He’s got one solid o-lineman, Hutchinson (who isn’t getting any younger), 1 reliable receiver, Harvin, and maybe Shiancoe, and he’s got Peterson. If Ponder had a decent offensive line, he would be doing great, but unfortunately he doesn’t, I don’t even know the last time the Vikes had a completely solid o-line. Vikings need to get a high draft pick this year, and at this point, I just wish the season was over. I’m a die hard Vikings fan, and I want them to win, and when they lose I am mad, but I remember that they need to lose to help shore up all these positions they need to fill. I just hate seeing the Vikes lose, and I just wishl this season could be behind us already. And I think Leslie has shown he doesn’t have what it takes to be a Head Coach.

  13. By SaltyDog on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

Hornless, the worst team in the leauge, no. Worst secondary, absolutely. But the Colts and Miami are for sure worse than we are, and I’d still rather be a Vikes fan than a cheese eatin packer fan.

Terrible leadership and decision making by spielman the last 2 years…..the sad news is that most of our players are in their prime..our inexperienced players will get better but we dont have a nucleus of players that we can say will be elite in 2-3 years…most teams in the nfl have prospects that are just as good as ours and probably have way more upside……it is going to be a very long 3-5 years…

  15. By Rich on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

Whoevers calling our plays needs to be fired. We have a million injurys. You cant try to get through the whole playbook just because you want to. Call smart plays. Im sick of the vikings staff looking like kindergarden football coaches. Even Frazier sucks. I like him but he doesnt know what hes doing. Oh and one more thing. Out vikings players need to step it up, we jump offsides and fumble and dont make tackles and dont get the extra inches for first downs and dont execute ANYTHING. Its gonna take a lot of time and pain. But eventually we’ll have a better staff and more devoted players. As far as ive seen theres only about 4 vikings who devote themselves 100% every play…Jared Allen, Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin, and Antoine Winfield. With Peterson hurt our best players are Jared Allen, Percy Harvin, and Kris Kluwe(our kicker)

Eric, we had a solid O-line until Chilly let Matt Birk walk. We had the best O-line in football 97-01 and went to two NFC championship games.

  19. By Matt R on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

Birk was the glue that made that o line run. Call out the blitzes. Now we have a bunch of guys who jump off sides and miss blocks. Execution is horrible. Thats on coaching.

  20. By SaltyDog on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

Rich, Ponder should be on that list, and Greenway, and EJ too.

  21. By Viking-ology on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

First half was pathetic-Ponder has no chance to throw, he has to roll out just to get a pass off. Longwell should have kicked that FG attempt and Booker jumped into a log jam when he fumbled. What a joke. Frazier also gave up on that third down attemt-instead of trying for the first down and move the chains, he played conservative because he was in FG range. Conservative gets you losses in the NFL.

The OLine is the biggest problem for Ponder. So draft LT Matt Kalil USC in the 1st, in the 2nd C Mike Brewster Ohio State, OT Andrew Datko in the 3rd. Then go secondary with the rest of the picks. CB Coryell Judie Texas A&M(Hamstring injury makes him fall) or CB Cliff Harris Oregon(Bad personality/ decision making) in the 4th. Not sure where CB Janoris Jenkins(2nd Best CB in draft) N.Alabama(Former Florida Gator) falls because of being a Pot Head. DeMarcus Love and Brandon Fusco could fight for the starting RG spot and depth.

Get Chiefs CB Brandon Carr in FA. He is better than what the Vikings got not yet a Shut down CB but is one of the best up and coming Corners. That would make it were the Vikings would only need to draft one CB this year. So in the 4th round draft one of the CB that I just named. Then CB line up would be Carr, Cook(depending on how his case goes), Winfield, (Harris, Judie, Jenkins), B. Burton. Allen and Griffin would be gone.

Titus – We still would have lost last week with McNabb. The only reason to keep him starting is if he was giving us a chance to get to the playoffs. That’s not happening, and I think there’s a clause in the trade where if he starts so many games, the team has to give up another draft pick. We’re better off just keeping him on the sideline.

Klawz – you make me sick. Would you rather add another Wolves/Wild team to this state? That’s what we’re bound for if we let them leave. This team at least still has potential for the future, and they will be a lot less expensive to keep in the state!

  194. By Parody on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

Sandia – I doubt NE will trade anything, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a team like Cleveland pull the trigger. I like the idea. We could add 2 much needed offensive linemen and start giving protection to our QB. Give him a few extra seconds in the pocket and his numbers would be massively improved.

  195. By Parody on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

*That is, I doubt NE would trade anything to move up in the draft. They are notorious for adding picks through trade, so a trade up would be outside of their nature.

Well, the Vikings lost but there were a lot of things I liked. I liked how Ponder never gave up. It wasn’t his best game, but I really like how he hung in there. It’s a tough learning experience that will just make him better and tougher. I also liked how we actually showed some fire out there late in the game. It’s been a long time since I saw that. I was very pleased to see this.

The Raiders were just better, so there is no shame losing to a better team.

I was also thrilled how they got Harvin more involved. You got to get your best players and athletes on the field.. Hint hint, find a way to get Webb out there more.

Sandia – Really? There were 5-turnovers in that game. How can you attribute the difference in the game to a select one of them? I would argue the interceptions inside the 5-yard line had much bigger impact on the result of the game, but all the turnovers (save for the last one, since the clock was dead anyways) made an impact in the loss.

Let’s just fire everyone who doesn’t have a good season each year and start over. If we just do that every year, we’re sure to hit the jackpot in 1000 years or so!

  245. By alex on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

Well Allen used a lot of speed rushes on the outside today and there was little pressure from the middle on passing downs, so Palmer stepped up in the pocket and threw the ball. I didn’t see Allen use any inside spin moves today….hmm

  246. By Parody on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

ALex – We might be able to convince them to start Brandon, but I highly doubt we can convince them to fire a CB from the team when we’re thin at the position as it is.

MT – The Raiders have been great at stopping the sack all year. I was surprised that the team was able to sack Palmer as much as they did, but I was pretty certain that Jared’s streak was coming to a stop this week. He just went up against some good protection. You can’t expect him to have a huge impact in every game when he’s the only one on our defense that plays with heart on every down. Everyone has bad days and bad streaks.

Jared will rebound. This team will rebound, but any rebound this year is going to do nothing but hurt our draft position.

We need protection for Ponder. You can have the most oustanding WRs in the league on the team, but if you don’t give the QB time, he’ll never be able to throw them the ball!

Good offensive lines can make the WRs we currently have on the team look like they deserve some pro-bowl votes.

Get a CLUE! New coaches are brought in to fix a bad team. It is VERY rare for a new coach to have a winning season in his first year. That’s part of the growing pain that associates itself with being new! Give him time and come back in 2-years to post your grief after he’s been able to mold the team into his own creation.

If you were Packer fans, you guys would have probably begging for the team to cut Rodgers towards the end of his first year. Look at how much worse the team was with him at the helm than they were with Brett the year before!

Be patient and give these guys time to learn from their mistakes. Be realistic about how much failure is acceptable in their effort to succeed.

ok now don’t explode when I say this, but hey lets do a Walker trade, think about trading Peterson for draft picks, I know, I know he is a great running back on a 2-8 team this year so far and what a 6-10 last year. Just something to think about, what can the Vikes do with one or two draft picks, maybe just maybe they can get more with Peterson on the blocks, one man a team does not make.

  278. By Parody on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

How do you know that MT? Because we don’t see the discipline in the 3-second clips of the sideline shots? I’m not about to say that he is a great coach, but I have no basis to say he is a poor one either. I just know that it is ignorant to expect him to do everything right on his first attempt.

Consistency will produce more success than consistantly starting over. You weren’t at top efficiency the second you started your first job were you? How would you have liked it if your boss fired you because of that?

Give the guy time to learn! 3-years is plenty reasonable. Anything less is too short sighted to form any kind of realistic opinion.

  279. By Parody on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

Sprained ankle for AP is the current report. My early guess is that he’ll miss 1-3 games because of it.

  280. By Parody on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

@Purple Nod – That’s never going to happen, not because AP isn’t worth, but because the league learned from the Vikings’ mistake that it’s just not going to work. That’s why it’s so well known – because it turned the Vikings into a bottom dweller for the next 5-years and turned the Cowboys into a multi-year Super Bowl team.

  282. By Mt_Viking on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

Parody, Frazier was and is a “Rooney rule” coach! The players wanted him to take over the head job- not because he was a good coach- because they got along with him! Players should never have a say in who coaches them once they join a team! It is the biggest mistake the Wilfs made…letting the players decide!

  283. By Mt_Viking on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

The Raiders coach has told his team he is watching the wire every day. And if they can not get it done on the field, he’ll get someone on waivers that will!

  284. By Parody on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

MT – It sounds like you’re saying that you have to be an ass in order to succeed as a head coach. I sure hope you’re wrong, because we’ve put up with our share of ass leading this team already.

  285. By truther on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

I will hold out hope for these coaches and team, But they can not get this draft wrong. They must also be agressive in free agency without trading away our future draft picks. If they turn out to be a decent coaching staff and Ponder excels and we get the draft right. We could be contending for a superbowl by 2014.

  286. By Mt_Viking on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

The truth is..in this league today you don’t get 3 yrs to succeed. They may give him this season and free agents and the draft …but, if he’s 2-8 this time next year and hasn’t been fired I’ll be suprised!

  287. By Parody on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

Frazier has cut people loose too. McKinnie was not doing his job, so Frazier got rid of him and found someone else. Madieu Williams won the NFL man of the year award (or wahtever it was called) but he wasn’t performing on the field, so Frazier cut him loose and brought in someone else. Berrian was given a paycut, and then fired as well when he showed that he can’t perform any longer.

There are a lot of guys on the team that are underperforming. It takes time to evaluate and identify them and make the decision to move on without them. It takes longer to find and train their replacements. Give it time, and we’ll see if Frazier is getting the right replacements in place. It’s far too early to make a conclusion on that right now.

  288. By Mt_Viking on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

Frasier must get to 10-6 next year or….hes toast!

  289. By Parody on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

Of course he needs to show improvement next year. I wasn’t arguing against that. But to expect him to take the team to a championship while he’s still getting his feet wet is ludicrous. I think he should be allowed the leeway of a .500 season next year. If he does worse than that, then the team should start interviewing for a replacement.

  290. By purplehaze1 on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

next week can they give the cheerleaders the ball and let them run around the field…at least they look good…oh my…GO VIKES!!!

  291. By Mt_Viking on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

We’ll see where we are at the bye next year. Yes Parody, every great coach makes hard decisions but, he must also have imagination and DISCIPLINE! He must rule the team…not cheer-lead. When he walks into the locker room, the players should be quiet not great him as if he’s a long lost buddy. A head coach needs to keep a distance from his players to be able to make those hard decisions fast and without feeling. A great head coach has a lonely work environment. Frazier does not have IT. He is a players coach…meaning hes easy to play for. Does he have the ability to change his whole persona? We’ll see. He did take the responsibility for the failure of this team today in his presser…finally! He may get IT now …only time will tell.

Let´s face it, who was the last decent and disciplined coach the Viks had? BUD GRANT !!! He took us to 4 Super Bowls. Every one after him were mere amateurs. Just to remind everyone of some of these ridiculous amateurs:

    Les Steckele
    Jerry Burns
    Dennis Green
    Mike Tice
    Brad Childress
    Leslie Frazier

Compare to the coaches winning teams like the old 49ers, Steelers, Patriots, etc had RIDICULOUS!!!!!! The change must begin with a very professional and disciplined head coach

Anybody who says fire Fraizer or call Ponder a bust does not know anything about football.

The reasons why we are having a bad year is because of these issues.

    1. We have lost 6 games by 7 points or less.

    2. Our passing defense has not been up to par to many injuries and not enough talent.

    3. We have not stopped a team on 3rd 1 all year.

    4. To many penalties.

  296. By MJH on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

This organization is a joke! The Vikings are the complete antithesis of Green Bay. Green Bay has a GM with a plan who makes wise football decisions such as sticking with Rodgers, bringing in Woodson, Matthews, etc.. Spielman would rather draft dirtbags, let go of productive players such as Sidney Rice and Ray Edwards and load up our defense with the likes of Asher “Woody” Allen, Cedric “The Entertainer” Griffin and E.J. “Take the wrong angle” Henderson and Kevin “Motor never going” Williams. Also, Green Bay’s players actually care if they lose. Green Bay has a team first culture. Green Bay players don’t get into half the trouble our thugs do. The Vikes have a clear vision; Just act and do the opposite of Green Bay. Their records tell the story.

Looks like they won’t be able to let Peterson carry the team any more, refreshing to see some different players in there..Ponder included

  298. By Frederick Jones on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

The 49ers added several good rookies including the #7 pick in the draft who leads
the SF team in sacks. They also changed the coaching staff…big time. They made an overhaul. It wasn’t just the head coach.

I’m telling you this because I want the Vikings to go a different route this year. It’s been proven time and again that firing a coach every year does not work.
We need a new General Manager to replace the 231,889 Vice Presidents.

This system of VPs does not work well when you are trying to make
big decisions in the draft, trades, or free agency.

WE WANT A GENERAL MANAGER TO REPLACE THE VPs

  300. By Justin on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

Sure they lost the game, but they still go home winners with the money they make. The fans are the real losers. They go home to living pay check to pay check. Stop supporting the NFL and support yourself. With out the fans they wouldn’t make any money. Then they would just play for the love of playing. It would weed out the sell outs. I am sick of pro sports. Sure they can play football, but what do they do off the field. Go clubbin, tote pistols, smoke pot. Most go broke anyways. WORTHLESS IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fire Frazier and cut Loadholt Ayodele Gerhart and Ashley Allen

  302. By Gary on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

Don’t give up on Ponder. He’s doing a good job with what he has to work with. Booker lost the game. I will tell you I think the coaching sucks. They have no clue of what they are doing. I think Frazier should have left with Childress and all the outher coaches. The Vikings havn’t had a coach sence Bud Grant retired. Denny Green was a good coach and they let him go. I like Frazier but he is to laid back. I don’t understand why Tony Dungy went to another team. The Vikings let the best coaches go and keep the leftovers. Tony Dungy should have been the coach here along time ago. We had a #1 defence when Dungy was here. I know of 3 coaches the Vikings let go that became head coaches and won the Superbowl. I say something is wrong in the front office. Fire the GM and the coaches it’s time to start over.

Everyone needs to relax… Ponder is good and will get better. You expect and aaron rogers or tom brady after a couple games? Get real. The coaching staff is good. We are going to get no where and build nothing if we keep firing coaches every season… it takes a while to learn a system. Plus remember that coaches can only put players in positions to succeed… they cant do the job for them. Let the season finish….look for bright spots and build on that. We will have good draft picks and hopefully make some big moves on the o-line and defensive back field… let the team grow… it may take a couple years yet too through draft picks and free agency… we all know how scabbing people in can go over ( mcnabb, berrian, favre’s second year)

    MAYBE FREDERICK JONES IS RIGHT.

MAYBE 200K+ VP’s IS AN INHERENTLY INEFFICIENT FORMULA FOR AN NFL TEAM TO WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS & THEREBY MAXIMIZING THEIR PROFITABILITY.

JUST MAYBE THE BEST SYSTEM OF LEADERSHIP EFFECTIVENESS MOST CLOSELY RESEMBLES — YEAH, I’M GONNA SAY IT — THE GREEN BAY PACKERS LEADERSHIP STRUCTURE.

IN OTHER WORDS, WE THE PEOPLE RULE !! WHAT THE MOST PASSIONATELY INVESTED PEOPLE ON EARTH, OF THE MINNESOTA VIKINGS, DECIDE BY MAJORITY, WOULD RULE !

ALL SEASON TICKET HOLDERS WILL BE SHARE HOLDERS.

I THINK WE SHOULD OUT-BID EVERYONE FOR OUR OWN TEAM & STADIUM!!!

UNFORTUNATELY, FOR ME, I’M IN NJ.

ONE THING’S FOR SURE: W/ THE FANS AT THE HELM, WE WOULDN’T HAVE KEPT EXPERIMENTING IN WAYS WHICH WOULD HAVE PROLONGED FAILURES.

WE WOULDN’T HAVE WASTED A HALL OF FAME RUNNING BACK’S ENTIRE CAREER WITH NO PROMISE OF A SINGLE SUPER BOWL APPEARANCE!!

  307. By norm on Nov 21, 2011 | Reply

i will never blame ponder for that loss, yes he threw 3 interceptions but let’s think about it, mcnabb would have thrown double that.

  308. By norm on Nov 21, 2011 | Reply

definitely got to trade peterson next season for some decent defensive backs so we can actually make some plays apart from allen on defense.

  309. By norm on Nov 21, 2011 | Reply

as much as i love petey, he deserves a better football team and we deserve to have some better players in the backfield and on the offensive line.

  310. By Tim O on Nov 21, 2011 | Reply

End the Philadelphia link now!! Fire Frazier immediately. Keep McNabb away from Ponder. He doesn’t need to learn how to throw the ball into the ground. What a disgrace. I don’t know how Bud Grant can ever watch another game. Let’s go Ziggy – wake up!!

  311. By DieHardViking on Nov 21, 2011 | Reply

lets draft riley reif, then draft some corners, then draft aa go to reciever for Ponder and somebody to help Jared out and were all set!!!

  312. By david on Nov 21, 2011 | Reply

so when is gonna be ok to fire bill musgrave? we run the most basic predictable plays every week. run a reverse one way then next play…. run it to the other side. maybe this year we will draft some linemen to protect ponder from having to run all over the place

  313. By Struts37 on Nov 21, 2011 | Reply

NEVER trade peterson! Are you crazy! YEs he would bring alot of stuff to the team that we need but SHEESH…. This guy is a once in a lifetime running back. He is the guy we need to build on! If we let peterson go and get a stud o-lineman and a draft pick…. where does that put us? Able to block one more defensive guy and no good running back… We would be taking steps back if we did that. Maybe we would get a high end reviever for him… now where are we again? Able to throw to that guy with no o-lineman? C’mon guys. And Musgrave has a good scheme. Evey NFL team is called predictable when plays dont work. If every play worked the way it should we would score EVERY TIME! Remember you are playing against people who try to stop the plays. Yes the second time the end around was called it was dumb but what if it worked? You would be so excited because obviously the D wouldnt expect it twice right?

  314. By Eric Tinneny on Nov 21, 2011 | Reply

i think we need two good draft picks and we will be contenders for our divition all we need a a good CB and FS. we have NEVER had a good Deffencive secondary and we need one BAD! we will also need to start Joe Webb because he can work our offience alot better then this dumb QB we got now. i do agree that we have to clear our plate but we can do with out that! all we need is a good secondary!

  315. By Struts37 on Nov 21, 2011 | Reply

Eric. Thats ALLL we need? Have you watched any of the games? That is a major thing we need but what about an offensive line? WHat about recievers? You must be blind dude

  316. By wezo on Nov 22, 2011 | Reply

this team cant draft big when you owe favre 20 million
also you cant forget chilly and his 11 million that he’s owed.
