Vikings Sign Sapp, Place Winfield On Reserve/Injured

Posted by Mike Wobschall on November 16, 2011 – 12:04 pm

The Vikings made a pair of roster moves on Wednesday as they prepare to face the Oakland Raiders at Mall of America Field this Sunday.

CB Antoine Winfield has been placed on the Reserve/Injured list after fracturing his clavicle in Monday night’s game. Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier said Winfield will undergo surgery on Wednesday.

To fill the open roster spot, the Vikings signed CB Benny Sapp. Prior to the 2010 season, the Vikings traded Sapp to the Miami Dolphins for WR Greg Camarillo in a move that improved each team’s depth at a position of need. Sapp, 5-10, 190 pounds, is an 8-year veteran out of Northern Iowa and knows Frazier’s defensive system well.

Corners, both safeties, o-line, left side of dline, receivers, and a new offensive coordinator. Draft should help, and next season they should go 10-6

The Vikings should have a top 10 pick in the draft, I hope they draft for need, this time around OL and the Secondary should be top concerns. Forget that suck for Luck garbage!!

It’s shocking to see how excited some people are to see Benny Sapp back. If he was any good I doubt the Vikings would have ever drafted Asher Allen or Chris Cook. I say why not use Marcus Sherels or Brandon Burton since the season is about over anyway. I wish coaches like Frazier would stop thinking that you need a veteran at every position to win games. Some of the rookies are good enough to start. But we will never know until they get the chance.

Good luck to Benny Sapp. Hope he redeems himself.

We sign a twilight player to replace a twilight player. They just refuse to rebuild the needed youth for this team. Did any one bother to ask if we gave up more draft picks for old joker. at this pace of giving away our future draft picks to sign over the hill veterans, we will suck for another 10 years. I will bet you anything they gave away another draft pick for this old dog. Thats Spielman and this organizations MO.

we had em…we traded him to the guppies for Camarrillo…the guppies released him…recycle…reuse…the Viking way…in the mean time, players drafted by Les and Spitball gather rust…yeah definitely a model for rebuilding…GO VIKES!!!

  19. By Shawn on Nov 16, 2011 | Reply

Truther … we didnt trade anything. He was a FA ( free agent )

We finally came out ahead on a trade. 1 year later we got Camarillo for nothing basically.

Sapp is 30. 30 is prime of an NFL career it where game intelligence and atheletic ability come together at a peak. 29-30 for every position except RB is a good year.

Sapp isnt a pro bowler but you wont find that mid season. Sapp B4 we traded him made and gave up some plays which is better than Asher just giving up plays. I dont remember a play made by Asher unless you count the one tipped ball earlier this season.

  20. By Shawn on Nov 16, 2011 | Reply

I could be wrong but I think Miami plays more man coverage than we do which could be why Sapp didnt live up to his ability for them

Someone, I don’t remember who, said that the 49ers went to 8-1 this season because they switched coaches.

Be careful when you say that. The 49ers improved because of other change too.

    1. Easier schedule
    2. The addition of several players including their number one draft choice
and #7 in the draft DE Aldon Smith.
    3. They also added Braylon Edwards, and others as well.
    4. Their leading rusher missed 1/3 of the season in 2010…
    Gore is healthy now.
    5. They also added some assistant coaches.

The Vikings must also make some changes. The need a GM to over-ride the
Draft, Trades, and Free agency. Currently their are too many egos clashing.

Does the coaching staff need to be changed? Give me some evidence!

I think we are short on talent in the OL/DB and perhaps WR positions.

  22. By Shawn on Nov 16, 2011 | Reply

overall i think its a good move Sapp might be solid depth for 2 years. Better than Asher anyway.

  23. By Shawn on Nov 16, 2011 | Reply

Fred Jones … Did you know in 2010 the San Francisco 49ers had 2 x 1st round picks …

and their coach Mike Singleterry drafted 2 OL in the first round of 2010 , which might be the reason to 49er success this season

2010 Draft … 49ers coach Mike Singleterry drafted

    11th pick …. T Anthony Davis
    17th pick …. G Mike Iupati

2007 Draft … 49ers coach Mike Singleterry drafted

    28th pick …. T Joe Staley

Could San Francisco be playing well because of Mike Singleterry focussing on the Offensive line ???????????

What do you think Fred Jones ????????

Sapp is a reliable corner who can add some much needed depth to a depleted secondary. I for like the Move the Vikings made here. Chilly only traded sapp because he was panicking. Rice was out and Favre needed someone to throw to. dolphins cut sapp, but the dolphins are sub-par this year and looking for a new direction, not much credibility to me. I like the move for Sapp, I’d take him on my team anyday

  27. By Vikingsfool on Nov 16, 2011 | Reply

Seriously james, you want your team getting embarassed every game for the rest of the season? you need someone who has some experience to add to your depth. Vikes already lost cook, and now winnie. If burton or scherels goes out then what? you gonna whine because the team hires a new corner then, think before you post man.

  28. By Vikingsfool on Nov 16, 2011 | Reply

And salty dog, I thought sapp was a nice peice on the Vikings squad in 2009, I remember a monday night game where gruden was talking him up as a solid backup. The vikes arent drafting him to be the next winnie, they just need some depth.

  29. By Parody on Nov 16, 2011 | Reply

I like the re-acquisation of Sapp. He was not a starter, but I had no complaints about him as a #3 or #4 CB. I think he made more plays for us than Camarillo ever did. We traded for Camarillo because of his “outstanding” ability to catch the ball. Well I haven’t been seeing it. He’s had some tough pásses come his way, and I haven’t seen him grab onto any of them. Any fool can catch the easy ones, but we brought him in here because he was supposed to be able to catch the tough ones too.

But at least we now have Sapp back. He’s a solid player who will add some reliability to a position that has been killing us this year.

  30. By Parody on Nov 16, 2011 | Reply

The question is, where will Sapp land on the depth chart? He hasn’t been away from the club for much more than a year, so he should be able to recall the system pretty quickly. Before Sapp came in, Asher Allen would have been the top selection for Winfield’s replacement. If I remember right, Sapp was praised for his ability to cover the Nickel CB spot, but I odn’t know how well he is against #1 WRs.

So are we still stuck watching Allen get burnt by people who stand a foot taller than him, or will Sapp’s knowledge and reliability be able to give him the edge over the young 3rd-round pick?

  31. By Vikingsfool on Nov 16, 2011 | Reply

I bet he goes nickle. Burton is ok, but he is a rookie and a special teamer first. He probably needs to learn how to adjust his coverage on the fly, one thing that a guy like sapp, who has been in the league for a while, is more apt to do.

  32. By Vikingsfool on Nov 16, 2011 | Reply

And I’m not so sure about cammy, he has made a few good grabs from ponder in tight coverage. You just dont see him much because he is a #4 reciever on a team that has to tighten up its formations. If the vikes had a decent pass attack, you’s see him some more, but why pass with a 4 reciever set where you have average recievers, when you can bunch it up where your better players play

  33. By Vikingsfool on Nov 16, 2011 | Reply

Thats how football is played friends.

  34. By Parody on Nov 16, 2011 | Reply

It hasn’t been about not seeing him. My beef is what little I see from him when we do see him. He doesn’t have the speed, but we knew that ahead of time, so there’s really not much to complain about. But I have seen him miss a few tough catches – when I was led to believe that his sticky hands were his primary asset. I know that you can’t expect them to catch everything that comes their way, but that was the one redeeming quality that Camarillo was supposed to have, and I’m just not seeing it.

  35. By Vikingsfool on Nov 16, 2011 | Reply

I finally agree with you DRS thats a great move by the coach, but I thought you wanted Fraziers head???

  36. By Vikingsfool on Nov 16, 2011 | Reply

Cammy only plays like maybe a half dozen times a game, and you dont need to be as fast as harvin to be a WR, look at Fitzy in Arizona, he aint fast, he has hands, now I’m not comparing Cammy to fitzy, but you have to admit he has made a few decent grabs, could be worse the Vikes could have re-aquired
Troy Williamson, I’ll take cammy over that stoopid bafoon anyday of the week. Just gotta remember that Cammy is a backup, not a starter, you cant expect him to grab everything, or he’d be a starter, and no team has 53 first stringers

  37. By Mike B. on Nov 16, 2011 | Reply

Sapp got beat very soundly by New England in the first game of the season and was summarily cut from the dolphins. Maybe he will have some fire now.

  38. By Vikingsfool on Nov 16, 2011 | Reply

I would hope that brady could torch benny sapp, I like sapp, but he is no starter. He is only a peice of depth for the Vikes. Unfortunatly the Vikes don’t have any starters in the secondary so benny might be looked on as one when the time comes, which may only be a few weeks away. I’m sure he as all these guys have som fire in thier belly, its just a matter of using it to thier advantage, and not getting emotionally out of controll and making a bad mistake on the field

  44. By Rudso on Nov 16, 2011 | Reply

Honestly I was disappointed when we traded away Sapp to the Dolphins for Cammarilo. Sapp wasn’t bad at all. He was defiantly better than Asher Allen. I also want to start seeing Burton and Mistral Raymond get some snaps. I’m starting to see Raymond #41 on special teams but what’s the worst that could happen if we put him at SS, he gives up a TD? Our safeties already do that on regular bases.

The Vikings having nothing to lose but to gain if they let these rookies an opportunity to make a play. Some players have a hard time during practice but a switch turns on during the game when the lights are on, you never know.

  45. By vernonj on Nov 16, 2011 | Reply

Time to cut the whole secondary besides Cook. 1st pick star corner.
Cut Winfield for the extra cash so we can a good CB and SS from FAs. Let Everson Griffin take Erin’s spot at OLB. Cut Remi and let Ballard be the starting DT.
Offense grab #1WR in FA and also get a LT and center.

  46. By Rudso on Nov 16, 2011 | Reply

What happened with the WR rookie Burton that got promoted after Berrian got cut? I don’t really remember seeing him during the game but than again Ponder didn’t get a lot of opportunities to throw.

I don’t know why Kyle Rudolph is not being used more. What happened with 2 TE formations and using Rudolph as a pass catching TE? I hope that the one handed catch he made vs. the Packers opens up our coaches eyes to use him more. Honestly, his the 3rd best pass catcher on our team, next to Percy and Shank, and his a beast at 6’5.

Everyone is complaining about the draft the Vikings had, yet we haven’t even finished the season and most of the rookies haven’t gotten a chance yet. We secured a future QB with Ponder, I believe that Rudolph will be a Pro Bowel player for years to come, his a total Viking if you know what I mean yet his a 3rd stringer? Not having a 3rd round pick really hurt us, DT Ballard is starting to make plays, Burton and Raymond need a chance to shine. I think we had good draft, you can’t expect every pick to be a starter right off the gate.

I rather see Brandon Burton or Marcus Sherels start. Playoffs are out of our reach but there is still enough time to make changes for the future. Obviously Chris Cook is a keeper if he can stay out of a trouble. But we need to see if Burton and Raymond are any good. Because if they are, the Vikes can draft an OL or an WR in the 1st and 2nd rounds. If they’re not as good we can draft a DB in the first round and pick up a WR in the free agency. There plenty of big name WRs in the FA next year.

No wonder we are losing every year why not go after Oregons Coach he’s got an offense that was #2 last year and right now #4 on the BSC CHARTS THIS MAN KNOWS FOOTBALL AND AT LEAST HHAS BLOOD FLOWING IN HIS VIENS NOT ICE WATER LIKE FRAZIER

  73. By Carl Brodin on Nov 18, 2011 | Reply

I am glad to see Sapp back on the Vikings we need that inside presence now that winfield is gone for the year. I think Winfield has maybe 1 or 2 good years left. I think have sapp next year on the opposite side of Winfield theres your forth corner. Then we do not have to use a Linebacker to cover a reciever because the coaches are afraid to use Sherrels or Burton that makes you wonder why they drafted them you have eventually have to get them some playing time. I hope they did not draft these guys to play special teams. Just like with M. Raymond at Safety so i think that blog that has us picking Iloka from Boise State. With M. Raymond you have flexibility where you put the Fs from Boise State in there and use Raymond as a fs/cb that also saves a roster spot. Then on this same blog They draft Xavier Rhodes CB FSU. I would rather have Stephone Gilmore because i think he’s more of a Chris Cook kind of player except he’s not a felon. I t would have been nice if Chris Cook would not have done this to his Girl friend. The reason why i say that is because as much as we like Griffin he’s pretty much done and i think even Fraizer can seee that. Fraizer needs to understand the secondary needs apartial over haul.
If i was the head coach i would get Burton and Sherrels some playing time then at the same time bring Griffin in and say we will have to let you go because the secondary needs to younger. Keep Sapp next year and have similar conversation with Winfield. When you have your conversation with Sapp tell him you intendend to sign him to a 1 year deal to let him show other teams what he can do and if he does good tell him you will put a 2nd option year in the contract. Secondary will be shored up. Do a similar situation with offensive line. Definately get some WR’s both in the draft and free agency instead of this play it safe mentality it does not work. Also do extensive background checks on players coming out in the draft.

Now lets see, the lowly Dolphins couldn’t use him but the Vikes need him. What is Les Steckel doing, that would complete the circle of stupidity. FIRE FRAZIER !!! Fire Zygi !!!! What is Bud Grant doing these days. As far as that goes what is Lou Grant doing these days?

  76. By Vike4life on Nov 20, 2011 | Reply

In order to win consistently in the NFL it starts in the trenches and the Vikes o line is average at best. If left Tackle Matt Kalil out of USC is available he is the obvious 1st pick. In the second round they can still pick up a quality corner like Alfonzo Dennard out of Nebraska or Janoris Jenkins. Jenkins has some baggage but also has a huge upside “remember Randy Moss” both of these guys would be an upgrade.

  77. By Steven on Nov 24, 2011 | Reply

I have a couple, questions, its obvious that we are struggling with our secondary, and it really hurt us having a leader like Winfield go down for the season, so what are the possibilities of getting back Darren Sharper? I haven’t heard about if he’s injured or what his status is, but I feel like he still had a couple good years left in him and he was a key player in our secondary when he was here. Also since the way our season is turning out, we should probably have a good draft pick this year, do you think that the Vikings will go after a CB like LSU’s Morris Claiborne. He’s showing great potential to be an impact player in the NFL just like Patrick Peterson has.
