Winfield Likely Done for the Season with Clavicle Injury

Posted by Ryan Cardinal on November 14, 2011 – 11:07 pm

Head Coach Leslie Frazier said that CB Antoine Winfield, who missed the last four games with a neck injury, is likely done of the year after fracturing his clavicle late in Monday’s loss to the Packers.

We’ll have more on the injury as word becomes available later tonight or on Tuesday.

Get well soon, Antoine. Don’t rush back, just get well soon. This team of stiffs isn’t worth pushing your rehab for.

@TRD… If the coaching staff can’t see what EVERYONE else does, then pointing it out to them won’t help. Gruden said on national television that “everyone in the league knows the Vikings secondary can’t cover anyone.” Maybe they’ll watch the broadcast and get a clue…..

I think it’s time to cut him he is a fragile player anymore not worth the money the Vkes pay him to warm the bench.

If their wives show them that, they might get Chris Cooked….. I doubt they even watch this tape, let alone the broadcast. Can’t keep your head in the sand if you watch a complete dismantling like they suffered tonight.

    @Woodboat,

The Vikings ALL knew that their OLine and Dbacks were the weakest part of the strugglingest team in NFL history. They knew that early in the 2010 season, if not before then.

    lol

  11. By Woodboat on Nov 14, 2011 | Reply

WInfield isn’t the player we all want him to be. He can’t cover anyone… he never could. He’s got all the heart that anyone can wish for, it’s just wrapped up in too small a frame that is too slow at this point. Keep him for the nickel, but he’s not a starting CB anymore.

  12. By Frederick Jones on Nov 14, 2011 | Reply

Some say fire the coaches. Some say get rid of these players.
Some argue against some of those things.

    There is a solution.

While yer at it this whole coaching staff blows! Cut their rear ends too! That was the best game plan Frazier could come up with after a bye what a JOKE!

  14. By Woodboat on Nov 14, 2011 | Reply

Well, Fred, if they knew it, they sure didn’t put a priority on fixing it. Which, to me, clearly spells out that they are incompetent and need to be shown the door.

  15. By Woodboat on Nov 14, 2011 | Reply

What is your solution, Fred? Disband the franchise?

  16. By Sir Greasy Panda on Nov 14, 2011 | Reply

Every phase of the game was a disaster. I mean there are so many things to fix. This definitely a rebuilding year and maybe another 3 years before we can be solid on both sides of the ball. What is worse is that this is barley week 10 and there are still 7 weeks to go. So things will be like this for a while. I didnt know how bad it was until tonight.

Yep– everyone was against me when I defended Chilly — I told you so– everyone said change the coach and we are okay– then everyone praised Frazier and said he was the answer– now more and more are saying fire frazier. Have to stick with the same pony people.

We’d be 6-2 under Poindexter??????? These jack-azzes are Chilly’s draft picks…. what madness in the minds of men….. Childress undressed this team, buried us under mediocrity, and that medicrity with no depth, ALSO Chilly’s doing, HOW is it we would be a better team under that fool?????

Madness in the minds of men.

Back to the Future is crazy. We fired Chilldress and it didn’t change anything. Frazier isn’t doing anything. Singletary, Musgrave, etc… isn’t doing anything. It’s the team itself. Get it through your head.

You think we could be worse under Chilly? Worse than 2-7– HA HA HA– madness in the minds of mice. And men.

  31. By Purple Koolaid on Nov 14, 2011 | Reply

I hate the size of our defensive backs. Winfield is good, but the rest of our secondary just can’t make up for their size when playing against bigger receivers. We saw it against the Lions and we saw it tonight. It’s time to start drafting/acquiring some bigger guys that can cover and won’t get themselves arrested for domestic assault!

Hey Frederick Jones! I HAD to jump on the blog, or puke myself to sleep….. Gotta vent after this bare-fanny spanking! UGH!

Hey, while I like Ponder just fine, we have no better options, but Capers made that puppy his beatch. Ponder didn’t make one quick “hot read”, he was late in his throws, he was little panicky once the rush started squeezing him…. Ponder was bad. That throw to Harvin down the sideline, underthrown by 10 yds or better….. that flea-flicker was FOOLISH, lobbing it into double-coverage with OPTIONS underneat…..

I like optimism, but this game gave me little optimism Ponder is an answer. Our O line is ridiculously bad, yes, but Ponder against a GOOD D coordinator is toasted like soft, mushy marshmallows!

  36. By Titus on Nov 14, 2011 | Reply

Ponder now knows what Favre went through last season– half a second to throw the ball. Insane. Rodgers, on the other hand, had about three minutes each play– and did anyone notice our players– except for Allen, half the defense seemed to quit halfway through the plays?

  37. By Purple Koolaid on Nov 14, 2011 | Reply

And give Frazier a couple of years before making any hasty decisions. We need to see what he can do with a couple of drafts under his belt before throwing him under the bus. I’m sick and tired of hearing fans call for the backup before giving our starters (in this case a coach) a chance to learn a little and to show what he’s got. We’ll know if Frazier has what it takes by the end of 2013, but I don’t think you can accurately gauge him as a coach before that.

  38. By Rocksalt on Nov 15, 2011 | Reply

either we have less talent than other teams, or we have less effective preparation, schemes, gameplans…….

Hey stick to…. pay attention, we ARE that bad. I never said Frazier would be better than Chilly, I laughed, correctly that some mental patient said we would be better off with Chilly…………. and IF you have been paying attention, this group is Chilly’s monstrous creation….. so HOW would we be better? Maybe Hank Baskett could turn us around???? Maybe Todd Pinkston???? Maybe put Bernard Berrian BACK in uniform???????

Yea, think before you say we would be BETTER with Poindexter.

  40. By Titus on Nov 15, 2011 | Reply

Koolaid, not sure what your name implies, but you seem reasonable. I agree– give Frazier some time. But I think we should see progress by mid-season of next year– not sure I would wait through the end of 2013– if progress next year, yes, one more– three years should be given to any coach.

  41. By Purple Koolaid on Nov 15, 2011 | Reply

Right on concerning Ponder, vlad. I don’t think he ever moved up in the pocket when rushed. Every time he felt a little pressure he would backpedal until the last possible minute and then throw it up to whoever. He’s still a rookie so concessions must be made for mistakes, but that needs to change fast if he’s going to be a high caliber quarterback for us.

We need tough SOBs in the secondary like Joey Browner used to be. Winfield has been great, don’t get me wrong, we just need more like him but younger.

How did it come to this? No pass defense and no pass offense?! Wow!

This lousy bunch just goes WAY beyond “bad coaches”….. it is heartless and talentless team. Chris Cook is a criminal and HE was our best corner since Winfield is in Red Cross so much the last two years…… The rest of our secondary doesn’t even bleong on NFL roster.

I feel badly for guys like K Williams and Jared Allen….. Chad “Easyway” is doing fine job of avoiding playmaking…. what happened to the 140 tackle impact player? Watched Ben Leber too much in HIS last year with Vikes….

Where’s my crying towel… I could mix cement with the amount of tears I got flowing. We are Indianapolis Colts of NFC…..

While, I don’t agree with everything Frasier has done I would hate to see him fired without the chance to have good players to develop. Our secondary was so afraid of giving up the big play that they let the Packers have every thing underneath, and I mean everything!!! Yeah we didnt give up a 70 yarder to Jennings but everything was open underneath. Our corners were playing 10 yards deep giving them all the cushion in the world. Every single pass play or secondary was 7 or more yards away from their receivers.

  57. By vlad19 on Nov 15, 2011 | Reply

Watch Packers receivers….. Jennings, Jones, Nelson, Driver, Cobb….. Not even done yet, Finley too!!!! Their TE is better receiver than any of our wide receivers…… THAT IS DRAFTING MY FRIENDS. We have Jenkins, Aromodoshu, Cammarillo and (free agents each)… Harvin is the ONLY guy worth squat in downfield game, and he is the “scat back”, slot guy….. You just can’t soften a D with the garbage we have – they should be ashamed to cash the checks!

Then a O-line that would make good pasta strainer……. bad is bad. Not sure Chilly deserves the expenditure of breath, as this sorry team is HIS making. Aromdoshu and Jenkins were UPGRADES from Berrian…. so while frazier is swamped right now, he has NOT ruined this team….. they were ruined before he took that chair.

this was posted by Mike J
    he makes some good points:

Before Frazier came we had the number 1 run defense our pass defense was top 15 and on Tomlins last year we was ranked 3rd in forcing turnovers. When Frazier became D.C. we still had the number 1 run defense how can you get better then number 1, our pass defense was the worst in the league every year that he’s been here so if you ask me I say we got worst. And also if you look at everywhere else Frazier coached you’ll he’s never been a good D.C. he got fired by the Cincinnati because they had a terrible defense and the colts never had a good defense under him they only won game because they had the number 1 offense in the league if he was so good of a coach don’t you think the Colts would’ve signed him as Dungy replacement they knew and Dungy knew Frazier was suck if not he would’ve talk the Colts into signing him.

Sir Greasy, you speak the truth… a play I like poiting to…. 4th and 2, Pack goes for it…. and our safeties are 15 yds deep, in cover-two……. this is idiotic and mindless playcalling. “Scheme”? NOT, those safeties were NOT supposed to play that deep, I assure you… Sanford doesn’t want to have to make a play…… Abdullah can’t even when he wants to…..

Singletary said he won’t coach losers, he only wants “winners”…. he can’t coach if youa re not a winner………

I think we will be seeing Singletary’s resignation very soon!

  60. By Sir Greasy Panda on Nov 15, 2011 | Reply

We all know our secondary is horrible but what about our WRs????? They are just as bad. They cannot get open, they cannot block on screens or running plays, and no one respects them. We have Percy who is explosive but is always hurt and needs a big threat on the outside to allow to be effective in the slot, and then we have Michael Jenkins who was an average number 2 in ATL, Aromashodu who cant make the Bears WRs corp, and Greg Camarillo. No one cares to defend them. Just stack the box against AP and blitz Ponder.

Rocksalt, you make good point, but let’s focus on what is being said here, I don’t think anyone is in love with Frazier, and certainly NOT a great head coach….. NOT. But the silly thought that Poindexter is better is absurd. Childress inherited a deep roster and made a couple great free agent pick-ups in Leber (when he had heart) and Allen, Hutch on offense and perhaps one of the best draft players in history in AP…..

NOW , with less than one year, Frazier has been putting out fires because we are talentless, and he has had ONE draft (and not very good one I must say, Toby was idiotic move, or was THAT Chilly too?). So no one is saying he is great, nor “good” for that matter, but being better than Poindexter????? No debate, Frazier is better, and pulling this squad out of the quagmire is Herculean effort….. NOT going to happen quickly.

  64. By Sir Greasy Panda on Nov 15, 2011 | Reply

Its too early to judge Frazier, way too early. The thing to watch will be this off season. Frazier had no problem cutting vets this year, hopefully it continues and we get rid of the dead weight. We are going to have to learn a lot of new guys names. There is going to be almost total turnover. Build it up Frazier! Id rather it takes 4 years to build a solid team than to have a “patch work” team that is good for one season and sucks for 2. Build for the long term success. I just hope Ponder is the truth.

vlad19, I agree. Chilly was developing a team for the short term and left us with very little to grow on. Brought in Favre (short term fix) because his pet project with T-jack wasn’t working out, mean while, not bringing in a viable recruit for the future. In a lot of ways Chilly left us with a mess that will not clean up easily.

  67. By Parody on Nov 15, 2011 | Reply

Okay, so we’d all be a lot more comfortable admitting this is a rebuilding year, so why don’t we look for the positives for the future?
The weakest note among these today was Ponder. He was getting blitzed all day with no protection and he ended making some poor decisions for the worst outing of his 3-games as a starter. But it was only one game, so let’s see how he rebounds.
In the off chance that Chris Cook returns to the NFL in the next 2-years, he has every opportunity to be the shutdown corner that we’ve been missing for decades. Someone just needs to slap him around a bit and straighten him out. I say he deserves one last chance before we send him packing.
I like what I’ve been seeing out of young DEs in Griffen and Ballard. Both are explosive players who can become starters in the NFL. If nothing else, they become good trade value behind Allen and Robison.
Brandon Burton and Mistral Raymond have yet to see much of the field, but both have good size and physical traits. I would be happy if we were able to turn one of them into a starter in the next 2-3 years.
And how about that catch by Rudolph? Why has he not been getting more targets this year? He’s big with the stickiest hands I’ve seen since Cris Carter! Just toss a jump ball in his vicinity and he’ll be the only one able to get a hand on it.

We still need a much more powerful offensive line, a legitimate deep threat WR and some bigger DBs who are both willing and able to take chances when the QB winds up. That’s something they could learn from the Packers. The team is known to give up big yards, but that’s because they take chances and end up getting more turnovers than any other NFL team to make up for the yards.

  68. By What the ...? on Nov 15, 2011 | Reply

Sir Greasy build for long term success is the way to go, but first we need a place that we can build in. The announcers summed it up nice at the end of the game there are a lot of question marks right now for this team. Getting a stadium deal done will be a step in the right direction.

  69. By Sir Greasy Panda on Nov 15, 2011 | Reply

Doesnt it seem like Loadholt is getting worse? He did well in 09, I think his rookie season. Ive seen him in person and he easily the biggest guy on the field but he is constantly getting burned.

  70. By What the ...? on Nov 15, 2011 | Reply

It’s not just Loadholt IMO… I lost count how many times a defender came after Ponder untouched! AP missed a few key blocks as well. Just poor play all around if you ask me.

  71. By Parody on Nov 15, 2011 | Reply

Vlad – Toby and the Cookie Monster were from Chilly’s last draft. Everson Griffen was a part of that group too, but he just may turn out to be a legit pick. Toby was a poor choice simply because we don’t use him nearly enough to justify trading up into the 2nd round to acquire him. Cook would have been a great selection, IF the coaches were able to tame him before he messed up so royally.

Frazier’s first and only draft included Ponder and Rudolph as the notable mentions. There’s a couple of olinemen and DBs in there with an outside chance of becomming players on the team, and one more DE who, while good, just doesn’t make much sense with the players we already have at the position. We are missing the 350lb Nose tackle in the middle that was making room for the other guys to do their magic. So on a lot of plays, our d-line looks a bit weird, almost as if there are 4-DEs trying to blitz the QB.

  72. By Parody on Nov 15, 2011 | Reply

@What the – Yep, I was pretty disappointed in that blocking attempt by AP. I thought that was something that he was working on this off season? But Matthews blew right on past Loadholt and AP set up to block him, but just punched at a cloud of air while Matthews knocked the ball out of Ponder’s hand. Luckily AP was quick enough to recover it…just enough to toss the severed limb in a pickle jar to arrive at the hospital in time to learn that they went bankrupt a week ago…

Oh – I forgot to mention someone – We got to see Webb in the game today…at WR! How many people were begging for that? He didn’t look half bad over there. Granted, he was only given a couple of attempts – but I think every time he got his hands on the ball today it was for positive yards. He still has the potential to turn into a good change of pace player. When he steps on the field will he be running a receiving route, taking a handoff back to throw the ball, or just scrambling for 10+ yards? Not an everydown type of player, but he’ll be a good way to throw the defense off balance if we use him properly.

  81. By Packer Fan on Nov 15, 2011 | Reply

Packer fan here. I love reading your comments! Here are my thoughts about your team…

If your team management were smart they’d trade Adrian Peterson now while he’s still worth a lot, because the team hasn’t even started rebuilding yet and won’t be good for several years. That timeline could be sped up by trading Peterson for some picks and players.

Harvin … Mr. Potential, but doesnt’ deliver much. Migraines and injuries look to be his legacy. Too bad, he’s got talent, don’t know that it will matter much in the long run.

Frasier … Haven’t seen enough of the Vikings to comment much, other than the team doesn’t seem to play with much discipline. He may be in over his head, but could improve if given time.

State of the team … A lot of you will disagree with this, I suppose, but your team has had a lot of players with “questionable” character over the last decade or so. That’s not good. For example, Robison is a dirt bag. What did he get fined for kicking Josh Sitton in the groin, $25,000? Should have been suspended for at least 4 games, too. See what I mean, questionable character. A dirt bag. The Packers, since Ted Thompson arrived, has place PREMIUM importance on a player’s character.

Good luck with that new stadium, and I’m serious about that. As much as I don’t like the Vikings, I’d hate to see them move elsewhere. They belong in Minnesota. Keep your chin up, fellas, there will be better days ahead. Might take a few years, but most years won’t be as bad as this one for you.

    @puckertrucker

Every team suffers bad calls. Every team has fans that think the ref’s are against their team. Every team has to deal with it. You aren’t dealing with reality very well.

The refs have it in for the Vikings ever since they came in to being?

Get a freaking grip, man. You’re living in a make believe world.

  85. By WaVikingFan on Nov 15, 2011 | Reply

Puck is kinda write, and I am beginning to believe it myself. I have watched a few vike games now on air the last several games. There are a lot of calls that the vikes get called for they do not broadcast a replay. But they pretty much broadcast all of the replays on penalties for the other team.

On another note, I found tonight to be embarrassing. I have never been embarrassed to be a viking fan until now. I have been a fan of the vikes since the original carter (not Chris). But tonight was just….. BAD. Way beyond bad!

I also agree with what people say about our secondary, but that has been a HUGE problem not only for years now but a decade. In my honest opinion the last time we had a good solid defense all around was when Toni Dungy was our Def Coach, since then it has never looked that good.
Now our O-Line, seriously need to not look like F’n putty and let people slip by them so easily and give Ponder time. I do agree with others though, Ponder has no one really to throw to. Our WR never manage to get open, which leaves us with nothing but holding our c0(k in our hands.

    Solution:
    1) Fire the Front Office
    2) Find a better Coach,…A REAL COACH. One that actually knows how to win football games in the NFL.
    3) Keep the Vikes in Minnesota
This does not mean pick one, but all of them must be done.

  86. By Jeffbleedspurple on Nov 15, 2011 | Reply

Winfield is more than likely finished for his career, he can’t stay healthy and is not the play maker he use to be, when our front office finally admit we are in rebuild mode, that should include Winfield, guess it would be easier to name the players who should not be included in the rebuilding,
    just awful.

  87. By Mike J on Nov 15, 2011 | Reply

Man why couldn’t it be Frazier and his Harlem Globetrottercoaching staff that was done for the year Winfield might be old but he’s our only DB who came to play. Mr Wilf i know you can’t be happy with our performance against the packers or the season because we sucked all season even the games we won didn’t look good so give us fans what we want a.d Fire Frazier and his staff go spend some Monet on a real coach then fire Speilmen and hire someone who knows how to find talented players if not then who’s going to support this team getting a stadium for what when they can’t win and your not doing anything for fans other then giving us a bad team to root for. Fire Frazier Now And Speilmen

Paordy, I was thinking about Webb also. If the guys a play maker get him on the field in a permenant fashion! I am sick of the tom foolery trick plays that they bring him on – no ones fooled! I know whats going to happen, the other team knows what going to happen, and my grandma knows. My hope is that Musgrave is trying to make due with the limited talent we have and not thinking that we’ll trick play ourselves to greatness.

As bad as our O line is, and our WRs for that matter, these guys can’t hold anybody OFF a scoreboard….. this game was bend over and say AHHHH! football game for our defense………

If I see Asher Allen in a Viking uniform next week, I will want to see Frazier escorted out of the building….

Ced Griffin lost his manhood….. never mind the jockstrap!

Sanford did GREAT job LOOKING like he wanted to make a play but DIDN’T – all night. A for pretend effort Sanford!

Abdullah was Mr Invisible…. you know like ALL the great safeties of all time, NEVER making a break on the ball, guessing and guessing wrong, hiding 20 yards downfield so NO contact is required – “Hey man, we were in the cover 2, how am I supposed to come up and make plays?” — answer, ask Ed Reed, John Lynch, Jack Tatum, ANY safety over the years!

How many interceptions do we have??? 5 or so???? Packer now has 17-18! HMMMMM, looks like Mike Singletary knows all about playing middle LB and nothing about putting a defense on the field.

I would hate to see Winfield go but we are in total rebuilding mode now or should be thinking that way. If anyone says other wise they are fooling themselves. I believe a total over haul is due. And as far as the refs not calling penalties that happens to all teams not just our team. Lets call it like it is….we are a bad team and that’s a fact

Mike W said the season isn’t over yet last I remember a season is over when your playoff chances are gone. He said our coaches will watch the game tape and go through our mistakes and try to fix it so expect a good game sunday, but any fan who’s been watching since week 1 shouldn’t buy into that because we had the same problems since then so why didn’t they fix it after that first game these coaches are clueless idiots getting paid to lose. Come on man our season is over its time to give our young players some game experience while starting excluding Ash AlleN, Abdullah, Sanford, and Robison take them out of the line up now. And i want to see Roudulf start to because Shiancoe is a free agent after this season and he don’t deserve a new contract to come back as a starter. Put in the young guys now and judging by their performance we’ll know what areas to address at the draft and offseason.

I truly hope it is not a bunch of fair weather fans out here. Ponder is going to have his ups and downs, he is only a rookie. The O-line and Secondary need to be direly addressed but there are some bright spots left on this team. Be true fans and be proud of your team no matter what happens, otherwise, before long you wont have a football team to root for in the first place. I love him as a player but he is having a lot of problems staying on the field. If we can find a silver lining in first Cook and now Winfield it is that maybe we can work some of the young players into the lineup to see what they can do. They need to play in game situations to see if we have something or not.

On a different note……. Have Faith in Tebow. I have to laugh sometimes when it comes to the cookie cutter, copy cat league that is the NFL. What do we do with Tim Tebow as he continues to confound the experts. ( eh, Shawn ) No NFL player has been more vilified and at the same time more venerated, before he has even had a chance to prove whether he is worthy of either than Tebow. The Broncos have a better record than the dream team and are now back in playoff contention again under his leadership. His stats look brutal and yet on Sunday he ran for a touchdown and threw a 56 yard touchdown pass to win the game. (one of only two completions) You just shake your head and laugh. I wanted the Vikings to draft him instead of Cook when they had the chance, but they didn’t. I am glad we have Ponder and if we would have gotten Tebow this coaching staff would have ended up befuddled and wouldn’t have known what to do with him anyways. The experts and talking heads can question his talent all they want, but what they cannot question is this man’s character. I believe as was mentioned in the blogs today, that character is what the Green Bay organization has placed as a priority when selecting players who will play for the Pack. Peace Out !

Tim Tebow has been a monkey wrench in the nfl, but soon enough teams will force him to pass and he wont be able to do it. a good secondary means a team can hold a couple of linebackers in containment so he cant run it on him. a good secondary will then be able to take away tebows passing game, which is pretty non existent

I think we should give this kid on the practice squad Reggie Jones CB a shot. Also i hear the Vikes are triing out Benny Sapp. I thought Benny was a good corner. I thought one of the big mistakes was letting him go. Maybe these two could help shore up the secondary. Anybody could be better than Asher Allen but this is who we have. We need to draft at least one elite or two very good CB’s and a safety. Theres this LB from the university of Pitt that could help i understand he’s a good blitzer they did not say if he was a good in coverage. Oh speaking of the offence Draft an OT and find a servicable OG in free agency or we could do that and also move Johnson into OG from LT. We also need to draft an elite WR or two from the draft. Leslie needs to wake up from his dream and learn to let go of some of his favorite players which are not necassarily be good players somebody needs to tell Fraizer all his players cant be all chior boys.

    What do you think Wobby?

Brodin your mostly right, but I think Frazier knows what he is doing, thats why he is coach. dont blame him because his players have given up. Bud only won 3 games his first year and look at what he did for the Vikes. Watch the Packers, they know how to do it

    @Vikingsfool,

I agree with you that Frazier probably knows what he is doing. He will need to be a man of faith.

I do feel that the effort is there in every game. There may be some negativity set in because they continue to lose ball games.

The problem IS THE TALENT LEVEL. :) :)

Well, I’ve read everything to here and would like to point out a few things. One, both our O and D lines, with the exception of Allen, are not doing their jobs. They appear to be just going thru the motions. I know a few are concerned about Ponder. Well let’s look at this…AP is arguably the best RB in the league and how many times does he hit a wall of defenders in the backfield…A LOT! Defense…keep Allen. The rest need to find out that the money stops when you don’t earn it. Secondary has sucked for years. We could replace all of them. Sapp wasn’t that good and I’m really not sure why we picked him up. “Put some jam on the helmet cause they’re toast”! And PackerFool, you remind all of us of the 30 years of basement dwelling the Packers did from 67 to Farve. You stayed and they really sucked. “Bay of Pigs” with Bucanneers?!
