Submit Your Monday Morning Mailbag Questions

Adrian Peterson exploded for 162 yards of total offense and 2 TDs, Jared Allen extended his consecutive games with at least a .5 sack streak to 10, Ryan Longwell hit his 10th game-winning FG as a Viking and Christian Ponder earned his first win as a starting QB.

There is a lot to go over from Sunday’s game, and I’m sure you have a lot of questions and comments. So let’s hash it out in the Monday Morning Mailbag.

It was nice to see Percy harvin finally get a TD, other than on special teams. He is a phenomenal player that should be getting the ball almost as much as AP. My question is why did it take so long? I know hes had a rib injury, but he has played every game this season, and this is the only 1 hes produced in, with the exception of the return TD in the 1st game. Thanks, and GO VIKINGS!

The zone defense that has been in place during the time that Frazier has coached here as first the defensive coordinator and then the head coach more recently has resulted in one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL. We have not been able to stop the pass with any consistency for years now. Why do we continue to play this system when it seems the personel that we have cannot execute this system which is in place. Is the talent or the system? On the last Carolina drive of the game yet another example of the ineptitude of our coverage was diplayed as a reciever was left wide open, no one around him, putting them in field goal range? I watch Jennings catch a td pass and jog the last 25 yds. to the end zone because there is no one near him. I watch Megatron run into the endzone to a spot, no one covering him and Stafford throws him the ball for an easy td. When will this huge weakness be addressed?

I think a guy with his size, leap and speed could be used to stop Megatron’s easy sky high receptions. Can he be used for returns? It seems like the trick play chances are very good with him involved in reverses that are run/pass options.

I do not want a lot of pressure on the coaches and players. Most of them we can see are doing the best they can.

The owners, VPs, scouts, etc….we simply do not know. AND THEY are HUGE INFLUENCES ON THE VIKINGS. Vikings coaches have not USUALLY had much say on the draft. THAT MAKES ME ANGRY BECAUSE IT TAKES AWAY THEIR COMPETITIVE EDGE.

have the final say in the DRAFT.

Whoever it is in the replay booth advising Frazier to challenge on both of those challenged plays needs to review their own procedures …. Do they not see the same replays as fast as the tv audience sees them? Both plays challenged, but especially the 2nd one where the tv replay clearly showed the receivers hands were under the ball and it did not hit the ground, should NEVER have had the red flag tossed. Losing the timeouts in a close game like that could have been really costly. Something needs to be corrected and fast so it doesn’t cause the loss of a timeout in a critical situation in a future game.

Mr. Brzezinski, may be the fool who “forgets” that drafting Offensive Linemen and Defensive Backs is NECESSARY for a team to WIN football games. It is his short-term thinking that got us where we are today.

or it may be some other VP that
“FORGETS” to draft DBs and OLs.

That is why we MUST hire a General Manager who has had SUCCESS in the NFL.

Did we have a weakness at QB in 2010. Maybe, but you took care of that with the drafting of Ponder didn’t ya? (Is Webb worse than Ponder???)

Why wasn’t an OL or DB not tabbed with the 2nd or 3rd pick?

Did we have a weakness at TE and DL?

C’mon Man…The NFL is laughing at your stupidity.

    Yes, Yes, Yes,

You are right we need to concentrate on the present.

Presently we need some organization in the front office. (This was not my idea, Mpls Tribune writer Jim Souhan mentioned it first.)

Start by blaming the FRONT OFFICE for the last two losing seasons.

At some point, you MUST blame the talent-seekers.

VP’s that do nothing but pick their noses.
Scouts that only watch the QB.
Owners that know very little about football and make poor decisions for the franchise.

Let’s quit blaming the players and coaches so much. The FAT GUYS at the top also have input and give FOOLISH ORDERS.

I agree with Stydinger that Gerhart should get more touches. While it’s a no brainer that AP should get his touches, Toby gets positive yardage 80% of the time. For some reason they won’t throw him the ball in open space, but he has produced when they do….recall the 42 yarder he had early in the season.
We’re wasting his talent. No he’s not flashy and superquick, he just knows how to grind out yards!
If Musgrave were as creative as he is touted he’d have had AP and Toby in the backfield together 40 percent of the time to create more opporunities for screens, dumps in the flat, etc.which should make Harvin/Shank/Rudolph even more productive.
They talk about getting yardage in chunks (which usually leads to 3 and outs), but there’s nothing wrong with a sustained 90 yard drive….like today’s where Gerhart got 26 of them.

sit Asher and let the rookie Burton play in Cook’s absence… Asher is not going to be a good corner, and please get rid of Tyrell Johnson. Why doesn’t Rudolph get the ball more he has the best hands on the team by far and Shank had another reliable game on 3rd down they have to work these great TE’s in more

Hey Mike, for once, I think the fanbase can finally say that the Vikings have a franchise QB. He did miss a couple throws that were very makeble at the pro-level but overall, Ponder did a great job especially on 3rd downs. We all know there’s issues that need to be addressed on this team, so do you think the Vikings will make a splash in FA this off season? Or do you think they will address their needs through the draft? Who do you think is worth pursuing in FA? I think it would benefit the team to add another superstar cailber vet. Your thoughts please.

I noticed Rudolph was split out wide, much like the Packers like to utilize Finley, and he made a nice third down reception to move the chains. How often do the Vikings use Rudolph split out wide? I think it would be a good idea to use out tight ends in this fashion to get more mismatches, what are your thoughts?

Yeah all those guys will probably be gone next year. They better be gone. Asher is probably the worst DB in the league. 4 years and still plays like he’s a rookie and doesn’t understand pass coverage. Same could be said about those other three. And when a DB gets beat on a go route by a TE, that’s when you know he’s garbage. The whole vikings secondary needs a makeover.

Do we not have any defensive secondary personnel on the practice squad? I can’t believe the ineptitude of our secondary players. They can’t seem to read the opposing teams lineups. They are way off the mark with giving up too much yardage to the opposing team. That 4th down play yesterday in the 4th quarter is just one of many that they have given up in the 8 games we have played. And Allen can’t keep up with ANYONE that has any speed. They blow him out of the water EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!!! IF there are any potentials on the practice squad, I say go for it and try them out. ANYTHING at this point would be better than what we are having to deal with. I have to say that the O-Line stepped up somewhat today to allow Ponder some throwing time(really surprised me). Where were they the first part of the season? Ponder, you did quite well for being your 2nd full game. You have alot of promise for this team and give them hope. NOW, Coach Frazier needs to deal with the secondary because if this doesnt change, we will NEVER be able to progress no matter how well we play the game offensively.

  86. By Mike J on Oct 31, 2011 | Reply

With so many complaints from us fans about the Vikings secondary you would think they would make changes but our coaches aren’t good at evaluating good talent and its obvious. I know they’ve noticed how terrible our DB’s are butthey continue to start them, and I’m tired of seeing people say Frazier is doing his job since he benches Mcnabb because the move was made just to take the heat off of him if he was such a good coach do you think Mcnabb would make it to week six with how bad he was playing and the same goes for BB. I really don’t understand why we use the tampa 2 defense us along with the Bucs use it but the difference are the Bucs have good cover corners and we don’t, they draft corners thatd used to that system while we draft corners just because of their size. That defense has yet to work for us remember Sharpers pro bowl season with us wasn’t under Fraziers it was while playing for Tomlin then the following year when Frazier came with that defense Sharper played terrible and we thought he was washed up but then he went to the Saints and had another pro bowl season do maybe our player aren’t good at that system and certain players shouldn’t be starting back their because they aren’t proving that they can play.

  87. By Mike B. on Oct 31, 2011 | Reply

I am glad we got the win. I was nervous the entire game as I figured it would be a TD for TD game. The defense held the panthers for a few series to prevent that from happening. Good enough to get the win. OL still has problems. Secondary is still gives up plays. The tackling was better, but saw some missed tackles. Griffin was moving around pretty well and he didn’t get beat. The others got beat and hurt us some. Ponder, AP, Gerhart, Shank, and Allen played well. We need to pick it up a bunch next game.

Even while playing over weight can anyone honestly tell me C.Johnson is doing anything better then Mckannie out their like for real at least Mckinnie had a lot of good games for our team. On an offensive line full with terrible starters Johnson stands as the weakest link now if I had a choice go pick between him and Mckannie it wouldn’t be a hard decision and it most definitely wouldn’t be the decision Frazier made just like not bringing big Pat back now we can’t even stop the run same goes for not signing Rice we haven’t had a receiver top 100 yards yet and I believe if we wanted to bring him back he would’ve came to us and we could’ve made cap space by releasing BB, Asher Allen, Cedric Griffin, Tyrell Johnson, and not sign Ayodel or Mcnabb who is due 14 million from us even after taking a paycut so we could’ve sign Rice if we wanted to we just make stupid decisions. And I honestly think Mcnabb would’ve never been benched if us fans didn’t put pressure on the coach, after getting booed at a home game while winning that clearly sent a message that Mcnabb had to go because Frazier supprted him through his worst game (week1) so why bench him during his best game Frazier knows the reason why is because he was on the hot seat. I was never a fan of Childress but his first season on our team we went 8-8 and we didn’t have half the talent that we have now so other then poor coaching what’s our excuse for being this bad we should be at least the second best team on our conference with a shot at a wild card position so what I’m saying is maybe Frazier wasn’t the right guy for the job we should’ve begged a coach to come off retirement I’m sure it would’ve worked since were known for begging ( Favre ) right.

    Please answer my question..

  95. By Mike Wobschall on Oct 31, 2011 | Reply

Yes I would start those guys because they are best-equipped on our team to guard the opposing receivers. I’m not going to give a blanket defense of our secondary, but let’s remember that the Vikings held the Panthers below their season average for passing yards per game, and Asher Allen was going against one of the best WRs in the NFL over the last 10 years in Steve Smith. All things considered, the secondary played well enough to be a part of a win. Could they improve? Of course they could. But when you’re a 2-6 football team, there are a lot of positions and individuals who need to improve.

  96. By Alex on Oct 31, 2011 | Reply

I consider myself a pretty smart guy when it comes to football. I think we need to get a (CB) and (S) right now. This might sound crazy but i think it would be a smart move to do is go and get Leigh Boden he was just let go from New England and he is way better then Asher Allen is. With Chris Cook suspended and Asher sucking all the time it wouldn’t hurt to go and get Boden. Think about it we should put Winfield and his original position that he played in college and that was (S). Lets face it he has been in the league for 15 seasons now i think he isn’t a spring chicken anymore. I think he would do good there. And then the last thing that needs to be addressed is a (WR). How about T.O. he still looks good for having an operation on his knee. He can still run a really mean route and he knows his stuff. I promise if we can make these thinks happen we can be a good team. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO VIKINGS.

‘cmon man they almost gave up the tying score-save for a bad kick, they are soft in the secondary and you can’t sugar coat it Mike; unless they play like they’re all world this week, they’re going to be shredded cheese…

Ok their nest equoped to stop opposing teams receivers but can you name one receiver that they stopped before. Yes Steve Smith is one of the top receivers in the league and their offense id on fire but I remember when Matt Moore played for the Panthers the year we went to the NFC championship they torched our secondary to and their offense was terrible our secondary is known for giving up big plays. Other then the Bears game our defense has played solid against the run and stopped teams from running and forced them to pass the ball but can you name one QB this season who didn’t put up big yards on our secondary? Take Jared Allen out of our defense and every QB is almost guaranteed 400+ yards on our secondary our defense is second to New England in passing yards and you don’t think theirs a problem since when was it a good thing to be ranked 31 stat wise out of 32 teams? 290 yards 3 touchdowns is a no picks is a great game to me, everyone came to play yesterday except for our secondary and if it wasn’t for a missed field goal and a holding penalty our secondary would’ve gave up another game because Carolina marched on us with no problem. The panthers only have one good receiver and noticed we double teamed Smith now when a receiver torch a secondary while being doubled then you know theirs a problem and so what if Smith is one of the best in the league because we sure enough didn’t show we knew that by putting Asher Allen on him and this is not the only game our secondary got abused its been the same story all season long its obvious that zone defense isn’t working if it can’t stop any QB’s in the league.

Here’s a question for the mailbag: Do you pronounce it Ashes Allen or Asher Allen? Cause dude seems to get burnt on EVERY throw.

Our secondary needs a major overhaul (stating the obvious). Joey Browner and Robert Griffith have to be throwing stuff around their homes watching these guys play secondary. It’s really strange too that Leslie wouldn’t have looked for better in that area during the off-season as he used to play the position.

For the Chris Cook lovers, his girlfriend has been beat more than he has this year so things are looking up. :)

With all the garbage playing on the field for our team, the entire secondary and the O-line minus one aging Hutch. Our WR corp is quite weak, and the D-line and LB corp also noticably weaker, how in the world will the Vikings address all these issues? Should us fans be concerned about it? I mean If the state is just going to ship them off to LA anyways, then I guess I can really care a less what the team does to improve.
Do you think Cook will ever dress up again? Do you think they will trade Joe Webb during the off season since it would appear the Vikes has no use for him anyways? Since the Vikes have no serious deep threat, aahhh never mind!

A win is a win, I am happy Ponder got his first win, he needed that! The team didn’t though, all that win did was knock us further down the draft board.
I seen the locker room celebration vid, don’t you think they were over celebrating? Things that make you go hhhmmmm!!! in watching that game I nearly feel asleep, I never falling alseep during a game before, what does it all mean?

I agree with all the bloggers concerning our secondary, however, they have been terrible for the last 2-3 years. Teams with a questionable passing game can look like super bowl contenders against our (non cover anyone) secondary. Does anyone know who the secondary coach is, then he should be fired along with the players. Our top priority should be:
    1. Secondary
    2. O-Line
    3. Quality receiver(s)
We could also use another DT run stopper next to Kevin Williams and better play from our linebackers, ie. the Henderson brothers.

    I welcome your comments.

Draft Matt Kalil for our o-line!

Happy that we got a win, but as Fred said, the issues remain. Imagine how good Ponder could be if he had a decent OL.

  106. By purplerainman on Oct 31, 2011 | Reply

I honestly think our O-Line is Okay for the most part. Hutch is a monster, there is no lack of effort from that guy. Our secondary really is the Achilles heel. With the way our pass rush works, it is fundamental that our secondary cover and make plays. We can blame Donovan all we want but our secondary is what has blown games for us this year. I truly believe that if we can get better in the secondary and find a stud Wide-Out, that we could be an elite team in the NFL. really don’t feel as though we need to re-invent the wheel.

I love Jimmy Johnson’s commentary yesterday on FOX. He said he knew he couldn’t win with what Landry had left him so he dropped his aging quarterback, dropped his running back Hershel Walker to the Vikes), found some guys that could really play for cheap molded them and ended up trading them for high draft picks. I love the mentality! If you want change you have to make a change period! That guy knew how to win.

Sorry Fred, call me easy to please. I know problems still exist but I’m happy for the team for the win. We should be rounding the corner and the issues are being addressed. How do you eat an elephant?

I agree with most of you, and disagree with some. We’ve got sufficient talent at WR, bolstered by the TEs and backs – now that we have a QB that can throw the ball all the way to the receiver. O-line could use a little beefing up to allow deeper patterns to develop and Ponder to hit them. But, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, there needs to be a change in the secondary. We could have held the Panthers to 1 or 2 touchdowns yesterday, and the final few minutes could have been much less tense. Hopefully the powers that be are working M-Sat to correct the deficient play. It is painfully obvious to every couch QB watching from home that MN’s secondary is Swiss cheese.

I agree about Allen and Johnson, Ive been talking about this for 3 years and still here we are. Same people same problem and whats the excuses we hear, well we have injuries so they have to play.

So coach, just so I get this right, even though there really bad and everyone can see that everyone team see Allen on the field they throw the ball his way and he never intercepts of stops the catch thats better?

Even the other corner stinks anymore since his knee surgery. Cut them and move on and see what we have for backups. Frazier I can handle losing but not stupidity!!!!

im just wondering who they are gonna pick up with that open spot in the roster.. im thinking they should pick up a corner just to help out. we cant be allowing 3 passing tds a game

  111. By Viking33 on Oct 31, 2011 | Reply

Shawn – they can’t afford to cut Johnson – I am not sure what Johnson pays the Vikings for those tickets he has, but they can’t be cheap – he has the best seat in the house! Ced Griffin seems timid since his return – I have seen receivers catch the ball in front of him several times and instead of attacking them, he tries to get in their way long enough for someone to come and make the tackle – but he does do his “Salute” thing, so I guess thats something. Love Ponder on Third down – he is an Iceman on Thrid down – biggest reason we are playing better is his play on Third down. We should probably cut McNabb though, not sure we want him “helping” Ponder too much…..just saying. I also hope we are targeting an LT a RT and DB’s in the offseason.

Mike how in the world can you defend this secondary. How many interceptions does our terrible secondary have this season.Winfield is the only DB they should bring back next season.Griffins play is way down .Asher Allen flat out stinks. He makes no plays.Abdullah takes bad angles and is out of position way to much.Johnson has the worse hands in the NFL.Mike they dont have 1 playmaker other than Winfield in the secondary plain and simple.

Try WEBB as a corner? Hes got great hands, and hes very quick! You never know? He could turn out to be a great db. It would be better than what hes doing now……..nothing…..warming the bench as one of our 53 actives? What good is that.

Webb at wr. Webb at corner. Anywhere but qb.
