Game Tied 14-14 At Halftime After Late Peterson TD

Posted by Mike Wobschall on October 30, 2011 – 12:44 pm

The Carolina Panthers were driving late in the 2nd quarter in an attempt to build a 21-7 halftime lead, but Jared Allen and Adrian Peterson had other ideas. Allen got to Carolina QB Cam Newton for a strip-sack, allowing the Vikings to take possession inside Carolina territory.

A couple plays later, Ponder dumped off a pass to Peterson and #28 sprinted away from the Panthers defense for a 19-yard score. Peterson now had 3 career receiving TDs and Allen has at least a .5 sack in 10 consecutive games. Allen also recovered a fumble early in the 1st quarter that was forced by E.J. Henderson.

Christian Ponder is 8 of 12 for 135 yards with 1 TD. Percy Harvin has 3 carries for 16 yards and a TD. For Carolina, QB Cam Newton is 11 of 17 for 152 yards and 2 TDs. The Panthers are rushing the ball well against Minnesota, with 97 yards on 17 carries.

The game is tied 14-14 going into halftime.

    Remember football is played in the trenches.

    The above has been the saying since football began.

    Trying to utilize a 550 pound QB when your linemen only weigh 98 pounds will not work, no matter how talented the QB !

    And…if the RB weighs 650 pounds and the linemen average 98 pounds, sorry you’ll be no where man ! ! !

    You can draft, trade, and buy 18, 000 defensive linemen, THAT WILL NOT GET YOU A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM. There are other positions.

    And…

    The Vikes star players played up to their level today. It wasn’t pretty, but effective. Musgrave made some adjustments that were beneficial. The O-line is porous at best. The running of AP and Percy were almost all on extra effort. Ponder wasn’t great, but was effective and didn’t make mistakes.

    Jared Allen, Greenway, Percy, A.P., way to lead your team.

    E.J. I’ve been critical recently, but you made something positive happen today! Thanks for a great effort!!

  70. By Frederick Jones on Oct 30, 2011 | Reply

    @Arrow86,

    The Vikings offense has been boring to watch because they cannot throw the ball deep. Ponder has the arm, but no time. So like you say, Musgrave is probably doing a good job with what he has to work with.

    Can anything be done to make up for all the glaring weaknesses?

  71. By Arrow86 on Oct 30, 2011 | Reply

    @Frederick:

    Maybe Vikes fans need to show up at the dome like the Lions fans did. Week after week with signs calling for Matt Millen to be fired! Spielman needs to go! I think a Cowher would be willing to fill the GM seat if it were offered. But I don’t know Cowher personally of course. Parcells is past his prime for “Buying the groceries.”

  72. By Frederick Jones on Oct 30, 2011 | Reply

    A.D. would have had over 200 yards with at least half of the teams in the NFL today.

    We have thrown the ball to him “coming out of the backfield.” I would like to see them also throw it to him downfield, once in a while.

    Play A.D. and Gerhart at the same time, and send one 10-15 yards down the field.

    Defensively, I would like to see more man to man coverage, rather than so much zone. Mix it up more and blitz when you can.

  75. By Arrow86 on Oct 30, 2011 | Reply

    @Frederick:

    I don’t think with our salary cap issues that we could bring anyone in yet this season that would be a difference maker. However, couldn’t we trade a productive player in an area of depth to pick up a 2nd or 3rd rounder. I’m thinking of Shiancoe. We are not going to win out. If we play better, great. But with improved play week to week, we diminish our draft status.

    Did you get to watch any college ball this weekend? Some great games! Osemele of Iowa State would look good in purple, or any of the Badger linemen.

    Fred – We got beat bad a couple of times when we had man-to-man coverage. Of course that was with Allen covering the best WR in the NFL. Still, it shows that we don’t have players with enough skill to stay manned-up on their assignments.

    I like the idea of getting A.P. the ball in space down the field. I love seeing him running towards cornerbacks. Like Deion Sanders says. “A cornerbacks shoulders are made for wearing designer suits, not tackling guys!”

    @TWoodsVike,

    Yes, we will watch a bad defensive backfield for the next 5 years unless something is done about the Vikings Administration.

    (For my critics: It was actually Jim Souhan of the Mpls Tribune who introduced the idea that the Vikings have too many Vice Presidents.)

  81. By Parody on Oct 30, 2011 | Reply

    Arrow – We can’t trade anyone or anything now until the end of the season. The final week for trades is week-6. After that, you’re stuck with the players you have, and whatever you can find in free agency until the next year.

    Fred – I think we did do a lot of blitzing in this game. I don’t recall the last time I saw Greenway breathing down the QB’s throat on so many plays. It seems to be more effective than the constant zone, I’ll give you that. But we need DBs who can cover their man more consistantly if we are going to keep up that success.

    I was commenting earlier this week about the Henderson’s. What has Erin Henderson done. In pre-season Spielman bragged about the LB from Appalachian State who broke London Fletcher’s tackle record. Where is that guy?? You called it on Sherels last season. He is a bright spot, and will make mistakes, but gives a great effort. Asher Allen gets torched weekly. Could we start working with Webb in the secondary as a safety? He can catch. Jaymar can’t. He’s probably our fastest guy on the roster. He has some size to get physical. He could be a John Lynch like player. I didn’t see him play at all today.

    I want to see Joe Webb dominate the NFL as a QB, but Ponder is good too. That is another reason we need a good GM, to help the coaches make that decision.

    Webb seems to have everything needed to be a shutdown cornerback in the NFL, but then we have never seen him do it in practice!

    I watched those games as well. Blackmon reminds me of T.O. in his prime. He can really use his body strength to create space for catching the ball. Stanford vs. U.S.C. and Wisconsin vs. O.S.U. were great games! I think we need to avoid picking up another “weapon” on offense. We have weapons, but you cant use them without QB protection. O-linemen, secondary, interior d-line. Let’s hope we get a shot at a good one! Packers Bulaga Rd. 1, Bears Carimi Rd. 1. Who was our last O-lineman in the first round? Was McKinnie? Lowdermilk, Tim Irwin, Randall McDaniel, Gary Zimmerman, could dominate our current O-line today, with the exception of Hutchinson.

    It was a good game from the stance we won, but lots of our weakness showed up. The secondary is very week, and the OL was not getting the holes for Peterson early in the game. The tackling looked much better, but there were holes in the backfield for the other team to throw into. It was close but an exciting game to watch. Ponder did well enough to win the game.

    86 rushing yards and a TD from AP in the second half. That’s a great rebound to being shut out in the first half. And he looked like a complete back today, with 76 receiving yards and a TD to go with it. The only hole he still has is picking up the blitz.

    Gerhart looked good when he was given a chance too. The problem is that we don’t give him enough chances. If we’re going to keep him on the roster, we have to use him more. Otherwise, see what we can get for him in a trade once the time comes- before it’s too late.

    To Green Bay. Home for Oakland. On the road to Atlanta. All three teams are well coached and on their way to the playoffs. This will really expose the weak areas of our team. Let’s hope we get a few breaks and capitalize.

    I don’t think Gerhart is going to be anyone’s No 1 RB so I can’t see the value in trading him. He is a good back up RB. I will have to disagree with you Parody.

    I agree. O-line needs to be adressed. When Ponder replaced McNabb, he looked good but some plays got away from the rush on his own. Get good (or at least decent!) OT and OG so offense can do their job.

    Shank’s contract is up end of this year, do we keep him or let him go? I like the way he comes up with the big play to get a new set of downs. What do you all think. I say keep him.

    I might be wrong on this, but didn’t the Cowboys have to sign Herschel before they could trade him to the Vikings? Otherwise, I’m probably thinking of baseball where they do a lot of sign and trades.

    He does move the chains. I like everything about him as a player. That is why I think he has value. Yes, I think we will see a dip in production initially from Rudolph, but we may get another pick to improve depth for future seasons. Otherwise, we’ll either overpay in the off-season for him or lose him anyway.

    The Vikings will be stuck in Minnesota for at least three years. The two L A stadiums will go to west coast teams. This has already been confirmed by the NFL commish- 2 months ago. Remember it isn’t up to Ziggy Wilf as to when and where the Vikes might end up, It is up to the NFL owners, but the final say is the Commissioner’s, Period. The Vike’s will have to lease somewhere in Minnesota until then.

    Erin Henderson looks great so far, but I am somehow worried about his older brother E.J.. We need a faster LB. But first overall we should select our biggest need : Oline and DB, WR, DT and finally a speedy LB.

    Toby doesn’t get a lot of touches, but today he was given a few carries and he proved to be productive. I think he has value. With as hard as AP runs, you always have to have someone ready, (just in case.) I think Toby could get us a 2nd or 3rd rounder if he were traded. I’d trade almost our entire secondary (except Antoine), but we couldn’t get a pogo stick for them!

  128. By Mike B. on Oct 30, 2011 | Reply

    The Linebackers are spending more time covering receivers than rushing the passer. That’s why we aren’t hearing as much from them.

  129. By NovaScotiaVike on Oct 30, 2011 | Reply

    Unfortunately, we might only get a broken pogo stick for Winfield, he’s looking very brittle these days.

  130. By Parody on Oct 30, 2011 | Reply

    I think we have EJ’s eventual replacement already. He’s on the IR list this year, but he held up well in his rookie year as he filled in for EJ’s injury. So I don’t think that LB should be a BIG concern for us next year, but we would be smart to at least find someone late in the draft to add depth.

  131. By Arrow86 on Oct 30, 2011 | Reply

    @Mike B:

    I think on the Greg Olson TD catch today, Robison was covering him. Coverage is an issue that Pagac has had to be creative. I wonder in our organization how much our coaching staff has a say in roster decisions and draft decisions.

  132. By Parody on Oct 30, 2011 | Reply

    Nova – I think that’s a problem with a lot of our playmakers. Too many guys on this team with the skills, but don’t have the durability to use the skills for the entire year. This is at least the second time that Winfield has missed 3+ games due to injury. Harvin has been slowed down by migraines and injury every year. Griffin and Cook have both had problems staying healthy, (or out of jail), and now Griffin’s injuries appear to have weighed in on him as his coverage abilities have diminished. Even Kevin Williams is fighting injury right now, with the foot problem taking away his explosiveness. And the oline, while not being that great to begin with, have had multiple injuries in the past couple years.

    Jared Allen and AP are the only playmakers that appear to have the durability to back up their skill for an entire year, but AP gets hit so many times, that it’s getting less and less likely that he’ll be able to pound it out for as long as he ought to be able to. He’s a fighter though, and I know he’ll give us everything he has right up until the very end.

    I think the coaches have a needs list and it goes to Spielman and Frazier then the decisions are made. I don’t think that either had an idea of how poor we were in depth and position. It was unfortunate to see one of the probables end up in trouble. I am not sure why they got fooled on the OL. I was also thinking the OL was covered, but it’s obvious now it’s pretty bad. WR are a mix and match of #2s. We don’t have a Number 1 at all in the WR spots.

  136. By Mike B. on Oct 30, 2011 | Reply

    @Parody I don’t think Kevin’s problem is him it’s the lack of being able to play off Ayodele. He had played so long with Pat they knew each other so well. He’s not on his game without Pat there. Ayodele is no Pat Williams. Pat is waiting on a team to play him. I think the Vikings would be classy enough to pick him up and let him play his last year a Viking.

    Until we get our zone pass defense right we can forget about playing in the post season. That long pass that got them in field goal range at the end of the game was business as usual. They repeatedly go after Asher Allen. Our pass defense has been poor for a long time now.

    I like that we found a way to win when running AP out of the back field was not working. Give Gerhart the ball, run some delays, run some screens, use our TEs!!! finally I think Musgrave is starting to open his mind and see new ways to win the game. Even though at times it got rocky we were able to pull through.

    And we got some crucial turnovers and scored points off them!!!
    2-6 aint much but its good to see some positives in this horrible season

    You can criticize management for their drafting, but I just watched the Ponder presser and I think they may have made a great move drafting him when they did. It is still early but I am really impressed with every thing he does. I thought there was progression from last week, I love his pocket presence and decision making, he is a smart kid who when he makes a mistake, learns from it and doesn’t make it again.

    @ Sir Greasy Panda, I was critical early in the season of Musgrave, but I am starting to wonder if the poor play of McNabb really made it tough on him to call what he wanted to because McNabb wasn’t executing and putting him in tough play calling situations. Harvin in the backfield, and Toby also seemed to catch Carolina off guard.

But just about everything else was attacked by the f$#@^%*& barracuda, so you would end up hauling in a fish head. We throw beer can lids into the water and watch them attack, at about 80 mph. They are so fast that your eye can’t follow them, just a streak. Anyway, got a 120 lb. Yellowfin, that’s always a good workout.
