Vikings Waive Berrian, Promote Burton

Posted by Mike Wobschall on October 25, 2011 – 1:24 pm

The Vikings on Tuesday waived WR Bernard Berrian and signed WR Stephen Burton to the active roster.

Berrian was inactive for 2 of the Vikings last 3 games and his release on Tuesday is the end to what has been a tenuous run of late with the Vikings. To fill his spot on the roster the Vikings promoted Burton from the practice squad. Burton was a 7th-round draft choice of the Vikings last April out of West Texas A&M.

The Vikings also terminated the practice squad contract of DL Cedric McKinley.

I guess coach Frazier is finally starting to understand the head coaching job, but it would’ve been better to trade him for a draft pick at the least. And also I think the coaches realized he was washed up a little to late but I’m still happy.

Did the Vikings consider promoting Manny from the practice squad?? He seems like the obvious choice.

We’ve had a tendency to draft picks where we are already STRONG.

Tight End, Running Back, Defensive Line, and Quarterback.

We need to FIX our three weak areas;;;; OFFENSIVE LINE,

    boring, tiring, monotonous,

@Alex …. If we were 3-3 TO might be an option but the only way to make the playoffs would be to go 10-0 to finish the season. We have way too many holes to patch up to go 10-0

Unless TO can play OL , WR, CB, and Safety ….

All this business of B Berrian makes me think that some of our coaches cannot tell the difference between athletes that are “not quite good enough” and those that “are good enough.”

I’m not saying that I could do it better than our coaches. But we MUST find some people who can do that (know the difference between “not” good enough and good enough.

It’s not an easy thing, but necessary ! ! !

Yeha we were all thinking Manny I think… maybe they just really wanna give Burton some time in see if he’s gonna be good, or maybe he’s been awesome in practice lately… but then again wasn’t BB good in practice? LOL

Hope the Burton and Ponder become a deadly duo. Now draft LT Jonathan Martin in the 1st, CB Stephon Gilmore or CB Janoris Jenkins in the 2nd, WR Marvin McNutt, DT Kendall Reyes, or S Marc Barron in the 3rd. LT Andrew Datko is awesome but with his shoulder injury don’t know were his draft stock is. Could fall as low as the 4th.

I heard good things about Manny, was hoping to see him, but I really don’t know anything about this Burton guy so hopefully he’s good. He only has about a size 2 shoe to fill so that shouldn’t be to difficult.

I hope you continue to find talent that the Vikings could use, and PRESSURE the Vikings into taking some of those people.

Another think I’m learning is that sometimes the bloggers do KNOW WHAT IS BEST.

Classic Examples include: McNabb benching, Berrian, POOR DRAFTing policies, etc., etc.,

@Mike Wobby – can you explain promoting Burton over Arceneaux?
Burton has better speed and has kick return experience… but what other insight can you add that the coaches are seeing that fans may be missing?

Cook probably will stay up to 3 years in prison ( girlfriend has a brocken nose and other injuries ). Therefor he maybe cut till the end of the season. Do we get an additional 5th to 7th round pick for him? That`s the question.

  30. By Mike Wobschall on Oct 25, 2011 | Reply

I’m not sure what went into the decision…without watching a bunch of film from practice on both guys and then talking to coaches, it’s tough to know what all went into the decision. I’m sure Leslie Frazier will be asked that question tomorrow during his press conference, which will be streamed live on around 11:30 a.m.

They only do their best when they feel like it and there is mirrors on the sidelines for the players to admire themselves during the game. The Phantom scouts will be from a pool of Hollywood girliemen! I’m sure some of you bloggers can come up with a few more players you have in mind to round out a 53 man roster! Go Phantoms!

For all those who bashed Fraiser ….. I think he has a much better handle on this team than we give him credit for. I know the W’s arent there, and we really should be 5-2 or 4-3 at this point, but the Vikes were the team hurt the most with lack of off season training. I knew McNabb wasnt going to be anything special, but then again I thought he would have been able to throw a ball better than that. But at last, cleaning has begun. Maybe we can still look respectable by seasons end.

  76. By CanadianVF on Oct 25, 2011 | Reply

Another article in the Toronto Sun was about Frazier defending Mcnabb about the accusation that Michael Lombardi made on the NFL Network that his work ethic was suspect. Last one to show up, first one to leave, late for meetings. You guys probably already know about this. Some of my friends who are Eagles fans said several Philadelphia players said the same thing about him when he was there. They said he wasn’t in good shape, puffing in the huddle etc.

  77. By NJVikingFan on Oct 25, 2011 | Reply

I will never say they should be 6-1, 4-3, because like Parcells always says, you are what your record says you are. Good teams don’t blow games when they are up by 17 and 20 pts. But I like Frazier. Not because I think he’s a Super Bowl coach (yet), but because he had the guts to cut two guys who I couldn’t stand right off the bat – Madieu Williams and Bryant McKinnie. Benching McNabb and waiving Berrian and calling out the D-line after the Bears game just reinforces the idea that Frazier is a players’ coach who wants to give his players the benefit of the doubt, but once his limits are reached, he is not afraid to pull the trigger in the best interests of the team. Keep it up Les – build the team your way and let the chips fall where they may..GO VIKES!

I have been critical of the coaching staff, but I agree with what he has done in changing the personel. I really thought he was right in cutting ties with McKinney. He seemed to be just going through the motions the last couple of years here. Either you are a professional and come to camp in shape or not. @ all those LT Jonathan Martin lovers. Have you not watched any of his tape. At least check him out on youtube. Martin is the next LT flop waiting to happen. He can’t handle the speed rush, check out his game against brooks reed. He just got abused. Obviously Kalil is awesome but if we’re not drafting in the top 3 we likely have no shot at him. Riley Reiff is very good and has a ton of upside being he only played LT once he got to college. Also Andrew Datko is way underrated this guy is incredably agressive he doesn’t finish blocking til the whistle blows. He also only allowed 1 sack last year.

A CB, SS, FS, T, G, or Center should be the Vikings priorities.

There is no excuse for not even trying to fix the WEAK areas on your ball club through the draft, free agency or trades.

Frazier should not be fired based on the performance of the team so far this season. Talk to Jerry Burns, if you do not feel the same ! ! ! :)

I do not think that berrian can’t play football at all anymore. I think that he lacks the drive to win. It’s no longer fun for him to play the game it is just a job and a paycheck. If he were to get into an organization that could relight that fire in him i think he could succeed. Which is why i agree with mike j and think that vikings could have traded him for some late round draft picks.

I think that there is a lot of talent coming out of college this year, and i think the vikings would do good to unload some mediocre players to get some draft picks. Start next year with a some solid vets, but build depth if nothing else with a lot of fresh draft picks. I was thinking Kevin Williams. He is heading towards the twilight of his career, but has been good for a long time so other teams would see worth in him. I also think that Pat made him look good for all those years and now that he lost his gargantuan companion he is nothing special. Are there any players that you guys have in mind?

Well one down and about ten more to go. Good riddance to Bernard. What a total bust !!! Next up Winfield, Griffin, Allen, Frampton, Johnson, Husain,Hutchison, McNabb,Kleinsasser, and possibly Cook if he turns out to be a head case.
If Harvin can’t be kept heaithy then he goes on the trading block. No sense paying someone who spends so much time standing on the sidelines, no matter how talented he is. Let the young kids play the rest of the season and see what we have and what we need.

Loved Jerry Burns when he was our head coach!! That ’87 team, which is one of my favs. nearly went to the SuperBowl!! We won’t miss B. Berrian!! Chris Cook should be the next to go!!

bb was an idiot, cook is a loose canon man-boy,

bring back rice, or even t.o. or moss would be an improvment at this point

I was driving through southern Wi yesterday and they had Aaron Rodgers on ESPN Madison, he gets it – his comment – The Packers win because of the extra effort the teammates put into each play not just the effort. Coach Frazier gets this and this extra effort is seen by #28, #69 and so far # 7. Each player must find a way to do their job better and apply this extra effort or they will be unemployed.
GET LEBER BACK, our linebackers cannot cover the pass at all!

Kind of dumb how some people are saying frazier is finally understanding how to be a coach by cutting berrian. Did he not cut Mckinnie when he showed up overweight? Didn’t he benched Mcnabb? He’s probably on the verge of cutting cook. I don’t think he’s afraid to pull the plug on anyone. And the talk about trading Berrian? Who would trade anything except garbage for berrian?(which is what he is worth) Would anyone trade a draft pick for berrian? I wouldn’t. If you wouldn’t, no one else would. Why trade for him when you could just wait until this year is over and pick him up in free agency? A team would only trade for him if they believe he can make an impact. At this point, he would be someone who you would just experiment with and that’s not worth trading for. The best they probably could’ve gotten for him was a third string DB even if they did. Waste of space on the roster if you ask me. Its better to cut him and let someone new get a chance to make an impact on this team which was what frazier did.

Ok now it’s time for some football. We have Ponder in and now a new receiver ready to prove himself. I thought Ponder did great on his first outing. Now lets see if this new kid can help, go Burton!

Why did this take so long to do? Ok, enough of beating BB down it’s time to move forward. I hope he finds a team that works out for him. Now coaches, please start running intense practices because a “team plays games like how they practice”. (go watch a Jim Harbaugh led practice and take notes)

I hope a team picks him up so we can get that 1.9 off our books. And definitely don’t need to get TO, he has maybe a year left in him and we are rebuilding

I don’t think Cook will face any prison time I think he and the girl will come to a settlement and he will probably get on probation for a while and a couple games suspension by the NFL. He will probably be back towards the end of the season and then at the beginning on the season next year with all of this forgotten about and in the past.

@ Twoodsnvikes I am with you on that, maybe the owner will lose his mind in Washington and sign berrian since they lost Santana Moss, but we probably cannot get that lucky. We do not need a head case like TO. He was just offered a contract by a team in the Arena Football League for $ 400 per game. That about says it all.

Yes your right he did cut Mckinnie but is his replacement doing anythinh special other then making every DE look like a star for all that we should’ve just kept Mckinnie. And your right he did bench Mcnabb but he waited until the season was lost to make the move, with the way Mcnabb was playing he should’ve been benched after the 1st week. And yes he did cut BB but the same as Mcnabb this move was brrn suppose to happen, we traded for Mcnabb so why wouldn’t a team who need a receiver give up a 6 round pick thats not a sure lock on a roster for BB, and no they wouldn’t be able to get him in this offseason free agency because he had another year under his contract if we didn’t cut him. And the reason why we didn’t get anything for him is because Frazier said it his self plenty of times BB is apart of the team and they will get him involved so do those words sound like they were intended for a person on the trade block I don’t think so. Frazier only did what he did to take the heat off of him because those were moves that should’ve been happened benching Mcnabb was simply to take some heat off of him because he ran out of excuses for why our pass offense was so bad same goes for BB.
