Ponder Will Start On Sunday vs. Green Bay

Posted by Mike Wobschall on October 19, 2011 – 10:31 am

Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier announced on Wednesday that Christian Ponder will be the team’s starting QB on Sunday when the Green Bay Packers visit Mall of America Field.

Ponder, who was chosen by the Vikings in the 1st round (#12 overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft, saw his first regular season action on Sunday in a loss to Chicago when he replaced Donovan McNabb in the 2nd half. In one quarter of action, Ponder was 9 of 17 for 99 yard with no TDs or INTs; he also had one carry for 8 yards.

Questions about McNabb’s standing as the starting QB surfaced early in the season after the Vikings stumbled out of the gate to a 0-4 start.

Smart move at this point. Have to see if this is our future or not. Gives us 10 games to evaluate his potential. Hopefully the team can rally around Ponder and give him support, unlike McNabb got. Still don’t see BB gettng open or catching ball consistently. Hopefully O-line will block better. Looked good against Bears, but can judge based upon that performance. Four man rush and soft zone defense. Interested to see how he’ll handle all the different blitz packages he’s going to see vs the Packers. Glad he can run.

Exactly! I have no worries about Ponder it’s the o-line that worries me, if they can give the kid some time in the pocket, I think we well see a much improved passing game which will also help out Peterson. DId anyone who watched the live presser notice that blonde? she sure seemed to like fondling herself, looked to me she could had used an extra set of hands, mine to be exact!!
    GO VIKINGS!!

Do you know what Ponder has that McJoke doesn’t? An IQ that breaks triple digits. He is going to read the defenses and throw hots like there’s no tomorrow and shred the meat packers. And everyone who is all concerned about him getting sacked and hurt… did you see him in the bears game? He’s smarter and faster than McJoke and will get rid of the ball quick or run when he needs to.

2004 Was the worst draft in Vikings if not NFL history.
2005 was 2nd worst in Vikings history.
2006 was a great draft, but Johnson and Hicks were the only OL picked.
Cedric Griffin is the only DB remaining from 2003-2007. He’s had 3 years to prove himself, and hasn’t.
2007 was a great draft, however NO Offensive Linemen were selected and only one DB (Mike Macauley, who never even started a game for MN)

Total Offensive LInemen drafted 2003 to 2007: Three, none remain on roster
Total Defensive Backs taken 2003 to 2007: 5 only one remains on roster
    Cedric “Cornbread” Griffin

Your wonderful FRONT OFFICE is mostly to blame. (: :( :( :( :(

It have been a long time since the Vikes had a young QB under center..the era has begun, and happy about it. This guy will bring energy to the offense which will trickle downn to the defense. Great decision coach..but it is a no-brainer.

Why is it that a lot of people think that since we are so excited about Ponder getting his shot that we all think we already are going to the Super Bowl? Thats totally silly and I still liked that blonde>

  24. By @PLOCK77 on Oct 19, 2011 | Reply

Ok everyone we all know that Ponder is a rookie so if he plays bad no need to get all angry. McNabb has not been the only reason why we have lost games, we were up 17-7 vs Chargers decided to not run the ball, up 17-0 vs Tampa Bay samething and our Cornerbacks not making plays need to remember Johnson had a shot at a INT with less than 2mins on the clock but dropped it. The worst one 20-0 vs Detroit samething no run game, play calling needs to get better and Btwice and Jenkins need to step there games up. We are still hurting from the loss of Rice and our O-Line will need to be the first picks of next years draft….

just talked to several packers fans, they all think that there team is hot sh*t and is going to destroy the vikings. I hope the packers come in thinking they are unstoppable because then ponder and crew will upset them and shut them up. ponder is mobile and that gives us an advantage. with ap running wild the packers defense will be zoned in 8 in the box thinking ponder wont throw but then he will tear it up for 300 yards and 3 tds plus 50-60 yards rushing with 1 td vikings win 35-17 btw allen forces yet another fumble and he and robison get angry from last week and they wreck rodgers with 10 sacks combined and break his leg just saying goodbye packers season skol vikes!

  26. By Titus on Oct 19, 2011 | Reply

HA HA HA HA– that was an enjoyable read, even though I do not like to see a player injured. Btw– I told this girl in Wausau that the Pack will lose and she said she wished she could watch the game with me so she could comfort me when I cry– Packer fans are about to be blindsided– they really have no idea what they are walking into on Sunday. But it will be close– we won’t win by more than three TDs.

Who is in the draft room?

I bet it’s Spielman, Brzezinski, and Frazier.

Then the rest of the coaches, scouts, and consultants are required to watch the draft, and be available for phone calls.

Of course they ALL have computers, and lots of prepared data

New QB same olb BB. I see improvement but no win. Sorry guys. Ponder though is way better than McCant.

  33. By teamkillin on Oct 19, 2011 | Reply

I definitely think this will be a good game for us, whether we win or lose (but hopefully win). We’ll have to score some mad points, because the Packers will shred our secondary, and they’ve consistently put up 30+ ppg. My guess: Vikings 28 – Packers 38. Even if we don’t win, we’ll lose with style and some swagger.

  34. By Colorado Packer Fan on Oct 19, 2011 | Reply

To you Vikings fans. Why are you always looking for that pie in the sky miracle turnaround? Your team will be no better with Ponder…He has no experience. One huge mistake that Minnesota has now been making for years… chasing instant success, instead of building a team yes, I said TEAM from the ground up. Petersen is a one man show. Favre was a one man show. At least that Irish black guy had experience…being knocked on his a**. I’ve also got to interject that I personally hate Jared Allen. That guy should walk under an elk sitting in a tree who throws a spear at him.

CPF, in Minnesota we call your QB “Jared Dodger”. And your “we’re the best, greatest team ever” pompous attitude is EXACTLY why you’re gonna fall to a few unsuspecting teams before the year is over. Even your coach McCathy is predicting 7-0. Heck, with any luck you might be the first team to start 6-0 and not make the playoffs! Go pack some more fudge.

I don’t have alot of confidence in any quarterback being the only change needed. I do have to think that McNumbskulls poor performance has to stop being rewarded with play time.

Ponder could become something special but he needs the OJT he can get from this year to be there.
