Vikings Drop To 1-5 After Loss To Bears

Posted by Ryan Cardinal on October 16, 2011 – 10:20 pm

The Vikings were unable to retain any momentum they may have gained after last weekend’s victory over the Cardinals, as the Bears cruised to a 39-10 win over the Vikings on Sunday night in Chicago.

We’re on the bus now heading to the airport, but Mike will have a lot to say on the loss and what’s ahead for the team soon.  The biggest storyline coming out of the loss was the pulling of Donovan McNabb late in the game in favor of rookie Christian Ponder.  After the game, Head Coach Leslie Frazier said the team would discuss its options on Monday, so unlike past weeks, he did not say if McNabb would remain the team’s starting QB or not.

The team hosts the undefeated Green Bay Packers at Mall of America Field on Sunday with kickoff slated for 3:15 p.m.

He has everything to lose by starting McNabb!

If we start Ponder maybe the rest of the team will RALLY around him and play to their potential… Beats sideline jokes and excuses, might even help the stadium issues.

I don’t think we are that far apart on the Front Office thing. You are right in saying the 2004 and 2005 draft fiascos are the fault of the Tice regime.

I feel that some of those people who were a part of that Tice regime are still with the Vikings. For us common folks, that would mean getting fired.

However, I would be satisfied just getting someone involved who is unbiased and will think of the team during the draft.

The Vikings have to be one of the worst drafting teams in professional sports.

@ Fred We have been using that TE bunch so many times this year that the crossing routes are handled by the TEs. All that TE bunch does is move the Defense in as they know we are going to run the ball and most of the time the TEs have to keep back to block and can’t get open. The offensive coordnator should be fired it’s too predictable even Al Michals could tell what we were doing.

Ponder played the perfect example of throwing the ball all over the field. He looked found open receiver and threw the ball. No over thinking. I think McNabb over thinks the game and not willing to just throw the ball down field.

btw McNabb did throw the ball pretty well today so not all the blame is on him. He could have been less predictable on first and second downs though

After a pretty good outing by Ponder, there is no way they don’t start him i mean he almost matched McNot’s numbers in ONE QUARTER.

Just a few thoughts on watching Mcbad. He throws at the receiver’s feet or the receiver has to dive to catch the ball. He doesn’t trow deep and can’t move very well in the pocket. With this year over as far as playoffs it is time to start the youth movement with Ponder so there are fewer growing pains next year. You can see the potential in Ponder and playing is the only thing to make him better and more comfortable. Then let us see what we can do with all of Webb’s talent and just maybe the Vikings should make him a receiver. Along with Ponder the O line is nothing special (5 sacks) and the Vikings did draft Love and Fusco in the 6th round but we were told had 2nd round talent but injured so let’s get them in now to. This is the last game i will watch if McBad is the quarterback and management dosen’t start building for the future. I still thing there is enough talent and with a good draft with low numbers in each round to pick up a receiver, OT, LB, DT and solid prospects at other positions. Look at Tampa and Greenbay with there young teams after a 1 or 2 to gell together.

@ponderthefuture You know that chicago was in prevent defense so there were yards to be gotten there. He was harrassed but they were giving him that 15 to 20yrd stuff.

He gave it that old college try for sure, we need some razzle dazzle after 5 games of ho hum. I didn’t like the fact they started him in a losing situation but I though he out performed expectations. Especially with 28 on the sideline the bears knew it was gonna be all Ponder.

    @Mike B.,

Well the Vikings are predictable like you say. Thank you for answering my question about crossing patterns. PERHAPS, only perhaps, that is a contributing a factor to our absentee p a s s i n g game?

Frazier wants a running team, so that is why they are doing it. The Vikings are saying here is what we are going to do, try to stop us!

Guess what, the other teams are stopping us!

Why did we think we could be a running team without a dominating offensive line???

Everyone and their sister was asking that many months ago !

  17. By Justin F on Oct 16, 2011 | Reply

Ponder, McNabb, and Webb are going to get killed by the Packers defense. I mean it. Our OL has become a liability to the team. That’s not all, our secondary has become a detriment to the team. NO TACKLING = giving up yardage.

As good as Rudolph is, picking an offensive lineman would have been more appropriate. (Yes, many of us thought that loooonnng before the pick.)

It’s nice having Gerhart, again an offensive lineman should have been picked.

Hindsight…NO many of us felt that way years ago.

I agree with you totally about the O Line.

But it seems to me that the d backs are improving in there coverage (probably not in tackling as you indicated). Please say they are getting better. That is what I am seeing.

They could have drafted a top d back each of the last 3 drafts. But we failed.

  39. By Woodboat on Oct 16, 2011 | Reply

Actually, Mike B, they went Cover 2, not Prevent. Even then, they were still able to bring a lot of pressure which I felt the kid handled admirably. There is no way McNabb would have eluded at LEAST 3 of those rushes. Good job using your feet, Chr istian.

Ponders accuracy was no better than McNabbs this evening. Donovan had a good night, actually. It would not surprise me if McNabb starts next week vs the Packers. The only thing Ponder had over McNabb tonight was his mobility.

That being said, the clock is definately ticking now. Even if McNabb starts vs GB, I’d be willing to guess he won’t finish the game… and then the change will be permanent. I’m guessing GB is going to mop the field with our squad, much like the Bears did tonight. The only way McNabb saves his job (if he starts) is to come out like a man with nothing to lose and just slings it.

This team is going nowhere until there’s some talent in the secondary, O-Line and receivers. Until then, play Ponder or even Webb – they’re mobile enough to escape pressure and smart enough to throw the ball away when the play breaks down.

    Fred I agree with you.
Why did we draft gerhart when we have the best RB in the league? We never received a reason for that which brings up speculation. Did we have plans of trading AP if Gerhart performed better reason why I think that could’ve happened is because we have history for getting rid of our best players so won’t have pay them. And our DB’s suck Chris cook is improving he pick his man up today but Griffin is done ever team picks on him he looks like Asher Allen last year I really don’t get why he’s starting give sherels a chance, Sanford is not a true starting safety the Tyrell Johnson project failed many years ago so we had chances to get a true starter but as a true Vikings fan I’m use to these stupid decisions its not new to me.

  55. By Woodboat on Oct 16, 2011 | Reply

    @ Mike…

They drafted Gerhart because they felt he was a steal at the position they drafted him in… too good to pass up. They, and many other squads, feel that if you draft for need you’ll inevitably overreach on a player and draft him higher than his talents really dictate (many people thought this was the case with drafting Ponder when they did).

I have no problem with them drafting Gerhart… just like I have no problem with them drafting Rudolph this year. You can’t have too much talent on the squad… if nothing else, you can trade them for players you do need.

NEXT year they should be near the top of the draft order and I HOPE that they only look at 2 (generalized) position for the entire draft… O Linemen and DBs. Take the best on the board and fill our freakin needs, Spielman.

Frazier doesn’t know a thing about coaching he knows nothing about offense he’s to afraid to tell a player their getting benched I bet he had Singleterry tell Mcnabb to take a seat so if your looking for any other players to get benched you’ll be waiting for awhile because Frazier has no guts. And defensively our DB’s were terrible even when hs was our DC he didn’t do any mthing special our front four was good before he got their he’s not good at coaching DB’s check his coaching history and you’ll see that every team he coached had a bad secondary at the time and it doesn’t make since like how do you not understand a position that you were good at.

Your right about teams thinking talent is to good to pass but if any other team had AP I can guarantee you they wouldn’t have drafted Gerhart if that was the case than we would’ve drafted Best instead of giving him to the lions. What can Gerhart do that AP can’t do his strength is suppose to be a power back but everyone knows AP runs harder then him,I see to many DB’s taking Gerhart down one on one to think that was a good pick by us. And the reason why I think if he perfomed good he would’ve replaced AP is because 1. AP had a fumbling problem and had protection problems where he had to be replaced on 3rd downs. 2. Remember we did that to another player who was the face of our team Moss he came off a big season and we traded him and at that time hs was the best receiver in the league, Culepepper same thing had a big season and we got rid of him to. 3. Vikings are predictable on the field but management is unpredictable anything stupid is possible with the Vikings history shows it.

They don’t let you say Ponder’s first name because it has a very naughty word within it. “Chrîst” is a word that is used by many people as a cuss, so they block that out. Some people will believe that’s ludicris, because this is their savior, but because others use it to cuss, it gets censored. Thank your local FCC for that one.

What’s even more surprising is that the site blocks the word “bálls” because it is often used as a reference to testicles. Apparantly testicles isn’t quite crude enough to censor, but in a sports site “bälls” is…so just try to get creative with your choice of words and letters. They can try to censor us as much as they want, but it will never have anything but negative effects on society as a whole.

First i will not watch another game that McBad starts and I hope this was his last game. He throws at the receivers feet or they have to dive to catch it even though they were not much longer than a hand off. Ponder thru down field and has way more ecsapeablity than McBad with are poor O line. Along with Ponder start Love and Fusco the 6th round picks that the Vikings said had 2nd round talent. Let the young guys grow together with AP as your center point to leed the way. It was sad seeing 9 or 10 in the box and still no game downfield with McBad. With Poner, AP, Kyle, Harvin we do have some really nice talent on the Offence. The Viks should know they have loyal fans that have stuff thru thick and thin for 50 years. No more retread QB give the rest of the year to Ponder and figure out what you are going to do with the talented Webb. He did not look very comfortable out there today and the 1 pass was way off target. A little concerned with the coaching ability too. 1 sack for the Vikings because we did not think the would chance protection and had no anwser. So please start the future now and have a great draft with low numbers in each round. On Defence other than Allen I am not sure we have a play maker, ya some solid players but not play makers.

People will contain Ponder the same way they contain Vick. In fact…containing Vick is harder. To think Ponder will be able to evade the rush consistently when teams game plan for him is ridiculous. He’s just a lot faster than McNabb which is to be expected

I think McNabb should start against the Packers. Ponder should come in after the bye

  85. By Parody on Oct 17, 2011 | Reply

Comparing McNabb to Ponder today, McNabb actually had significantly better stats, with a rating of 97.4 over Ponder’s 70.5. Somehow, McNabb was actually able to complete almost 80% of his throws this week, and although Ponder started out good by completing his first three consecutive throws, he finished with a 53% completion ratio.

These stats are a bit misleading though. McNabb took 5-sacks while Ponder didn’t take any even though he had defenders draped over him on many plays. Ponder had a couple of ugly throws, but looked decent overall, making the smart decision to get outside the tackles and then throw the ball out of bounds when players weren’t open and he was being hurried. And he was being hurried A LOT!

Turn McNabb’s sacks into incompletions, and you maintain some yards (so long as he is able to avoid the intentional grounding) and the two QBs start to look a lot more similar (82.1 QB rating with five extra incompletions). Consider the fact that Ponder was throwing to second string players for the most part and that he had two backup offensive linemen in front of him, and his numbers in his first game are that much more impressive compared to the 13-year vet who had the luxury of all the starters for the vast majority of his snaps.

  86. By billbobagons on Oct 17, 2011 | Reply

They do not really contain Vick he just is not aware that there are people rushing him and doesn’t take care of the ball. Ponder is a very bright QB and already looks better than McBad and throws down field to loosen things up for AP.

Charlie “Brown” Johnson was HORRIBLE… any holes open up? Did you see ONE block in second tier? You see ANY lineman downfield hitting bodies? Nope – they were ALL beat on the line and second tier was not ever reached.

This wasn’t just bad, it was textbook how NOT to play I-line…. No pride in this bunch – already established there is no talent and no athleticism! Ugly football. Would LOVE to be fly on the wall during film!

How would you like to be AP after signing 100 mil contract and THIS is your first season of the new era???? THIS is your offensive line that is supposed to open you holes???? Our TEs can’t block, Kleinsasser has no other contributions capable so if he is on the field you KNOW it is run… Shiancoe can’t block Asher Allen type corners, let alone linemen or LBs.

Our linemen aren’t agile enough to run a screen game, and Loadholt and Johnson’s feet are NAILED to the ground. Herrera was just pathetic, LOST out there. Center was upgraded when Sullivan went down…. Hutch is very much alone and can’t look good with no other help. LONG season. Bring back Les Steckel!

Earlier in the week I predicted Berrian would get 5-catches for 60~ish yards. Turned out to be 5-catches for 54-yards. I had no idea it would end up that close to an accurate prediction, and it ends up being a performance just good enough to keep him in the starting lineup. Hopefully Ponder will be able to find his sweet spot better than McNabb or Favre could, because I think we’ll stuck with him as the #1 for a while longer now after that spectacular performance.

  90. By Parody on Oct 17, 2011 | Reply

I gave him too much credit though, predicting that he had a chance to catch a TD. I must have allowed myself to be fooled into believing the blog that advertised Chicago’s poor performance at safety.

That just reminds me to take every opinion or “fact” that’s presented by this website with a big heaping brick of salt.

I used to think that the Vikings management was a good judge of talent- but not anymore. Think Dante Culpepper and Dimitrius Underwood…..Troy Williamson and Erasmus James in exchange for Randy Moss, with Aaron Rodgers still on the board. Then Spielman arrived. He ruined Miami, now he is working on this team. Tyrell Johnson….Toby Gerhart? Give away McKinnie and Birk, one a former number one? This team has been reduced to the laughing stock of the league. I remember the Jim Finks and Bud Grant era. Time to get back to basics. This team needs a serious GM to take the personnel problems head on. Spielman can hit the bricks, and so can all these ex-Bears. That includes Barnyard Berrian.

The O line was a joke and we need to see if Love and Fusco can play along with Ponder. We already know we need a OT in the draft and lets see if Fusco and Love can work out at Center and Guard. We also have to think about the Coaching maybe to. But start the future now.

I know Ponder’s playing time at the end of the game came against a defense in prevent and not really committed as it was in the first quarter but one thing was apparent and that was his accuracy. He put throws on the money and those he missed were not glaring problems. Those slants were on the money and if he were to get serious snaps at practice and be the focal point in the game planning Ponder could be really good. Plus his feet and pocket awareness are highly tuned! Loved the mobility.

ponder will start next week but the vikings will get killed but at least we will see what the kids got, I like what i see so far, reminds me of kramer when he was a rookie, lets face it season is over maybe 3 or 4 wins we are in rebuild mode nowso we should start by getting a off. linemen in here by trade deadline. mcbad is done as a qb mistake was made in bringing him here. but i think the lockout was the reason why oh well. This is just a very bad team right now, it looked good on paper but they just smell. whos to blame? i like fraizer but im not sure hes got it as a hesd coach I love AP but i would not have redone his contract so fast vikings could have gotten 3 high picks for him in a trade he deserves to play on a good team , a trade was the only way vikings get out of the nightmare they find themselves in because as we know they dont draft that well and if you think a new stadium is gonna get done forget about it that has about as much of a chance of getting done as do the vikings winning a super bowl in my lifetime i know my attitude sucks but this is what happehs to you for bleeding purple for 45 yrs. will it never end?

  96. By billbobagons on Oct 17, 2011 | Reply

It seems like Frazier is in the Bud Grant mode where you do not play rookies and 1st or 2nd year players. That worked 25 years ago but things have chanced. First things first Frazier must admit it is a rebuilding year then maybe he would move forward. Lets start with Ponder he will be muck better next year if he plays this year. The O line we have 2 rookies that looked great in preseason and they can not look any worse than the O line looks now. So start Love and Fusco and hope for a OT in the draft. Next start Toby at Fullback and Webb as a tight end with Kyle.( Vasonta contract up after this year) Start Devin at WR because BB is gone after this year let Ponder get use to playing with AP, Harvin, Kyle, Webb and Devin this year.On D get a way to get Emerson on the field much more along with Cook who is starting to look like He will be a great corner and let Winfield sit or a little in the nickle but would like to see Sherols , along with Ramond and Burton. Windfield has been geat but he will be 35, and has a big bonus next year and will not be back with the way cook is starting to look. start the rebuilding now because you have many Viking faithful if we see you are trying to improve the team for next year and with the low draft picks in each round the Vikings should have a nice draft. what do you all think out there would love to hear your opinion. One last note I also thought the Viks might do good against Da Bears but the cardinals were just that bad and we are 1-11 on prime time in the last 12 games.

  97. By vlad19 on Oct 17, 2011 | Reply

It won’t end as long as draft the way we have in the last decade – you can point to a couple winners, but a whole ton of dead weight, and all o-line picks have been bust! How many corners we draft in last decade and see what we still keep putting out there? Safety? What is that? Sanford, Abdullah are wusses and don’t have nose for the ball – you see That paper crumble out there on the contact that put him out of the game?

And then you have that absurdity, Tyrell Johnson – the guy doesn’t make a good blocking dummie. HOW can we play defesne like this? Chris Cook is looking good, they were beating Ced Griffin like the proverbial drum tonight cause Cook was as good as we could hope. WE ARE BAD ALL OVER.

But look at the bright side – there is always next decade!

Can you imagine if this game was played in the Metrodome instead of Soldiers Field and Ponder subbed for McNabb, the loudest cheers in the history of the Vikings would have occurred. Okay, I’m exaggerating, I think.
Is Ponder going to start against the Packers?? I’ll be very surprised if McNabb is NOT the starter. Maybe I will see the loudest cheers happen next week when Ponder replaces McNabb halfway into next week’s game.
Ponder may not have put up great numbers but he showed me he is way better than McNabb. At least Ponder had the sense to throw the ball out of bounds before getting hammered unlike McNabb who could have done the exact same thing but held on to it when Peppers pushed him down.

It’s time to put the chicago loss behind and focus on each game. The writing is on the wall we are playing in a mediocre fashion and we need to take the wins or losses due to that. Too many mistakes out there to blame any single person. I do see this as a coaching issue. Time for changes and get players on the field that want to play. Take care all

Before anything, you all better start thinking new stadium. If we don’t get one nothing else matters, unless we all move to L.A. Not everyone is a NFL fan, and with our economy, public funding doesn’t look good. Without those funds, goodbye vikes! It’s hard to see us lose each week, but first things first. Put in half as much time trying to get a stadium as you do blogging, and we may have a slim chance.

Please sell the team to someone who is more intense and would hate seeing his team getting there butts kicked!! Clean out the front office because there evaluation of talent and making the right off season moves has been terrible!! This coaching staff has no business coaching in the NFL!! It is time to release McNabb and Berrian, to show this team that everyones job is on the line going into next year!! Let’s evaluate all the young talent on this team to see what you have and start building on next year!! You must build a team by starting with the OL and DL!! The only OL lineman worth mentioning is S. Huthinson and he is at the end of his career!! J. Allen is the only guy worth talking about on the DL!! K. Williams is at the end of his career!! That guy we signed from New Orleans isn’t worth a flip!! Our LB’s are good against the run and horrible against the pass and our DB’s are the worst in the league!! That play against D. Hester was a joke!! They just watched him catch it and almost shook his hand and said great catch!! Why do we continue to kick to Hester? He owns the Vikings!! Even after returning a kickoff against us, we still kicked to him on the next punt!! What?

  109. By Mike B on Oct 17, 2011 | Reply

I think the special teams want to prove they can prevent Hester from scoring on them. But Hester has proven you kick to me you better get your popcorn cause the show is on. Vikings have burnt so much by this guy. Don’t Kick to Hester Ever! Kick it 150 yards into the stands better on the 20 than a TD. Up to now special teams have been a bright spot today they are a not so much.

  110. By Mike B on Oct 17, 2011 | Reply

I think if Pat Williams still wants to play. I think the Vikings should sign him and let him have his last year. Kevin will be happy and I think the front four will be happy. Rotate in the rookies on passing downs and cut the guy from NO. The new CPA is killing us as they don’t have to do as much full contact practice and these guys need to practice tacklling it was bad. Greenway needs to get in there and stop the run and get to the QB like he as before. Is he sitting on the fat new contract he got?

As I stated early in the season, this team is real bad. The bears off-line has been bad all year and we make them look great, No pressure from our front 4 on defense. Allen had 1 sack which resulted in a fumble, besides that nothing from the rest of the front 4. We had trouble stopping the run and Cutler had his way with our high school secondary. HOW MANY TIMES ARE WE GOING TO LET HESTER HURT US. I think he has returned a punt/kickoff the last 3/4 times we have played the bears. Pi– poor coaching. Also last night was a good example that I talked about all year. Put 8 in the box against AP and he is a no factor. The bears did that all game because we have no one who can stretch the field and give defenses problems. MAYBE HARVIN, but he’s banged up and it showed after every catch last night. I am amazed that we haven’t completed a pass over 20/25yrds all year. How sorry is that!!! That just goes to show you how bad our offense is from top to bottom. I love my vikes but it’s getting harder and harder watching this team. My wife tells me to start rooting for another team, maybe it’s time. I live in Charlotte now and will be going to the panther/viking game. I already have a bad taste in my mouth that the end result will be Carolina big. Maybe I’ll start pulling for them because at least their young with alot of talent and headed in the right direction. Viks 3-13 this year. WE SUCK AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!

From watching other games the NFL is a passing game now. A good run game helps the pass. We need to switch from Run oriented to Pass with a good run game if we want to succeed. We need the weapons to do this and we are short on OL and WR. We are too predictable and good defenses can stop the run too easily.

  117. By Mike B on Oct 17, 2011 | Reply

I am positive the team starts with AP is what is killing us right now. We have the best RB in the NFL but we need balance and an aggressive pass game. We play to the AP first and teams beat us badly.

CHICAGO — How much longer can this go on?

That was the prevailing thought watching the Vikings stumble around aimlessly on offense Sunday night against the Chicago Bears. And you can’t even pin it all on Donovan McNabb this time.

Oh, McNabb still had a few moments that made you shake your head, but everybody on that side of the ball had a hand in one of the ugliest displays of offense you’ll ever see.

Facing one of the NFL’s worst-ranked defenses that had two new starting safeties and wasn’t exactly brimming with confidence, the Vikings managed three points, 22 rushing yards and seven first downs in the first half.

@Mike B yeah i believe Chris cook has really stepped up thats our bright spot. It seems like Cedric Griffin gets burned on every play. Also the run game only works when we can throw the ball. The bears would load the box and we still couldnt pass. Your Right we need to be more pass oriented, this isnt the 1970s where the run was dominant

First off- Purple05- I TOLD YOU SO! To the rest of of the whiners out there, realize this: This game had to happen- meaning, Mcnabb had to come out and be terrible one more time to finally prove once and for all that Ponder should be the one playing. That happened so this is a good thing. Secondly, if we can now get our pass defense and O-line to step it up, we may have a shot to see a better finish than how we started, but if we can bolster these two areas, then I see us going something like 7-9 or 6-8. I am actually looking forward to seeing how this team rebuilds this year now that Ponder has been able to get his feet wet and I think he is going to be the spark to get people excited again. Tough game to watch yesterday, but Skol Vikes. We now have something to sink our teeth into…

What I seen was a not so good team just had a bad day, Peterson even had a bad day and it surely showed by his performance and stats, people have been putting to much on the shoulders of Peterson since the start of the season, while I have been saying we need to improve our passing game and not worry about Peterson. I think seeing Ponder in the game was the Vikings baby steps of better days ahead. Now I believe if this is a permanent move our QB’s issues are resolved and then we can starting to focus on other issues with the team and let Ponder mature. It was a good move I think, now to look at Berrian, Ponder may make a difference, maybe! Seems our O-line issues have gotten even worst, 2 starters may be out.

With the large amount of young talent it was a stupid move in the first place to sign McNabb. Webb proved he has the talent to start with Ponder learning and playing as # 2 and eventually a starter. We need to build on our line and defense. We have a solid core foundation but lack the structure to keep it efficient. We allow too many big plays that pull us down and don’t utilize all of what our team has to offer. Maybe Frazier should stick to what he knows best and that’s defense. A coach should work with his strengths and build with the rest of his staff on his weaknesses to round his team out. This is not happening and that is why we are losing this season. Pull McNabb, trade him for a better receiver or an extra safety or corner or solid mlb. We need to shut things down defensively and broaden our offense and take control like Vikings do!

  142. By ht0wn1 on Oct 17, 2011 | Reply

Granted Ponder possesses speed to be elusive and has a quicker release, which he will need with this porous offensive (and I mean that literally) line. The current receiving corps is truly horrendous, but good quarterbacks make bad receivers good and great QBs find and make their own receivers (turn duds into studs). McNabb can be a valuable commodity as a backup, because he does possess the ability to manage a game and he can mentor the possible future of this franchise. Overall, it is still not McNabb losing all these games, so it is not fair for everyone to lay it all on the so called mechanics issue, because it is not the mechanics dropping the ball or allowing gaping holes in the lines as well as not maintaining leads, not to mention poor tackling.

Troutdaddy.,..what exactly did you tell me? McNabb has been a veteran for years. Ponder still has to prove himself. Everyone is looking for any thing to grasp from with Ponder because they don’t want McNabb in. He still has to go out there week after week with teams game planning for him. Ponder would be lucky to have the career McNabb had

I even just saw someone come up with some formula about switching McNabb’s sacks for incompletions. You can’t come up with anything to support your argument. Ponder is young and fast…so yes he was able to escape the rush and throw out of bounds. That will not happen often once teams build a profile on Ponder. He is a rookie and unless he starts playing like Cam Newton…my judgment of him will be reserved. I only hope he doesn’t get injured because Vikings fans weren’t patient enough to give him a solid O-line. If god forbid he gets injured because defenses contain him…it will be on all of the irrational Vikings fans heads

On that last post — “Ponder still has to prove himself –” McNabb has had way too much time to prove himself, because he is a veteran QB, the bar should be higher for him. We would be willing to be patient with a rookie like Ponder because we need to groom our new team for the future. Age has already drawn the curtain on McNabb.

Parody and you may have a point. He used to be good. Maybe you should re-read the context of my post in response to hippster. The point is to not disrespect the man’s career.

And who said I was terrified? More like realistic….I’m not an emotional thinker like many of you. Most of you are just willing to throw Ponder out because you dislike McNabb…not because you care about the best interest for Ponder. I fear for Ponder’s safety behind that O-line once teams game plan for him

Hippster…you made a comment about his race…I responded. Don’t try to go off on another tangent about his numbers. Yes he’s struggling so far…even though he showed improvement. In the end…this TEAM gave away games we should have won. We could and should very well be 3-2 right now…and if that was the case we’d look at last night’s game and say McNabb is improving in the offense. But it’s too late…the season is lost and it’s time for Ponder BUT….I do NOT want to throw Ponder out behind that depleted O-line.

Ponder can not run or avoid forever especially once teams game plan for him. I can see the big picture and I don’t want him suffering serious injury or struggling too much because of emotional fans. You kill a kid’s 1st impressions in the nfl and it will come back to haunt you. That is logical thinking…not emotional thinking

  163. By Parody on Oct 17, 2011 | Reply

Purple05 – Do you want to sit Peterson then? Teams are gameplanning for him against us, so he’s got a bigger chance of getting injured. Let’s just sit him so that their plans can’t include injuring our good players.

You can’t wait for a perfect situation to present itself. Ponder will be sitting on the bench his entire career if we just hold him back until we find the perfect OLine to protect him. Get him in there and let him learn how to protect himself. He’s a big boy, and we don’t need to coddle him through his career just because we spent a high pick on him.

@Purple05: Ponder is not no little boy that needs mothers protection, he is a professional QB in the NFL, not only will Ponder get much needed experiance, but we will also see how tough our QB really is, taking a beating will only make him or break him, o-line best just step up and give the young man time to progress. if Ponder gets broke, he is in the wrong profession, QB’s young and old takes a beaten all the time in the NFL, QB job description, you will get hit!!

I was waiting for the pull at QB since there 4th loss. It was good to see Ponder get in there. It actually covered up the nausea I felt as the Bears were handing it to them. the Bears who will more than likely finish at .500 The Packers are for real and no one in this dvision including the Lions will touch them. SO, Start Ponder -revamp the playbook for Ponder, his style might help the offensive line by moving the pocket or the ball out quickly to the tight ends and dont fear the long passees either. This will open it up for AD and control of the clock to keept good offenses off the field. Lets start now and see where they wind up at the end and what help they will need going in to next season. Is it me or does Frazier on the sideline looks so confused and numb about what is going on in the game?

I hope we dont hold on to this guy becuase he caught a measly 5 catches……… best thats “ok” for our “number one reciever spot” Mcnabb looked better this game then most……..but still we can not have this guy as our leader, it was great to see Ponder in there! I heard critics were saying his percentage was great……well then i ask you how many TD’s did he throw for…..none!! My opinion, Ponder looked pretty good for playing his first real season game and with, OMG a horrible Offensive line…..what is the deal fellas, regardless who is our QB…. give him time, dang! All in all…Ponder looked pretty decent, AP basically got stopped, Allen with another sack, and Percy always doing pretty well, but we still stink something fierce!

At this point, I hope we loose the remaining games and secure the #1 overall. Take Andrew Luck. With ponder and Luck we are set at QB for 15 years and can rebuild over three years and win our first Super Bowl in 4 to 5 years from now. Option 2. If we dont endup with the #1 overall, We need to trade Jared Allen to secure the #1 overall + a number 3-4-5. This will allow us to draft a younger talented player to replace J Allen and also Oline Need,s. Next year we trade A Peterson for a #1- #3 – #4- #5. Now we finish our D line Needs and Get Two shut down Corners. Year three we draft two big fast and phisical Wide Recievers with our # 1 and 2 selections and Running Backs with our #3 and # 4. By rebuilding this way we will have a Power House Dynasty By year our Five at the Latest. This is the best way to Maximize what we have now to ensure that we have The best team in the NFL for at least a decade. It’s time that the Vikins Franchise finaly get it right.

Just absolutely pathetic. The mighty Boa warned you of this last year when Frazier was picked. Upon finding out that he was the DC behind the defense that had ALREADY blown so many leads at that point, one could only wonder how moronic a step it would be to make him head coach.

The mighty Boa nearly cried when they won last week, knowing that this would help him buy another 4 or 5 weeks. Had they lost last week AND last night, he mighty well have gotten the boot.

To have to turn off a game in the first quarter is just pathetic. But it was obviously already over. With this team, you can NOT relax with a 40 point lead at half time, yet once they’re down 10, 14 points,,,, it’s over.

GET RID OF HIM NOW!!!! And take McNabb with ya……….. It was FRAZIER who insisted on bringing him in,,,,,,, let them go get a room.,……. JUST GO!

This team needs to make changes if they are ever gonna go anywhere! The Coaching staff should be able to see who is pulling their own weight on the team and who is not. I dont care if they are a big name hotshot or a rookie looking for a shot, If they arent getting the job done pull them out and give someone else a chance. There is plenty of talent on the team to shift around a few positions and maybe make something happen! Also they should kick the football out of the endzone every chance they get. Make the other team start on the 20 every time. Why kick the ball to Hester, that is crazy!!! We dont need to draft anybody else maybe just give some of the backup players a shot. Just my opinion

I bet Chilly is feeling a little vindication bout now. There needs to be a lot of changes at the top of this organization. Ponder did well for a rookie and he will either get better or will become a highly paid backup on some team. Either way we will know what we have for the future. After reading the commentaries I really feel the urge to say something about McNabb. Some commented that he had decent game, others said he even had a good one. Not true! Just because he had an good passer rating (97.4), dosen’t mean he had a good game!

I really liked Parody’s commentary comparing McNabb to Ponder. I think it was spot on regarding Ponders incompletions an McNabbs sacks. The conclusion was a “sack corrected” passer rating of 82.1. I would like though, to make some additional arguments on behalf of Ponders superiority over McNabb (and why McNabb DID have a terrible game).

    In order of relevance:

Addition 1. Passer rating doesn’t include what a QB does or doesn’t do with his feet. I’ll admit that McNabb moved better than expected from a man of his size and age. Nevertheless Ponders elusivness was far, far superior. Ponder was able to make plays out of situations that would have been a sacks with McNabbs feet. Then one should consider the effect of positive and negative rushes. Ponder did make a positive rush for a first down. Wheras McNabb did a … well I don’t actually now what he did during the safety. Somebody named the move “crouching tiger, hidden fetal position”, which seems appropriate.

  206. By Tommy, a fan from Finland on Oct 17, 2011 | Reply

Addition 2. Ponder did spread out the ball to his receivers far better. He tried to make plays. Some were made. Some weren’t. But all throws contributed to open up the field (together with his mobility), and to insurge a level of creativity that has been totally lacking with McNabb as QB. I would go as far as say that McNabb is a contributing factor to the uncreative passing plays that we have seen all year. Mcnabb had one 20+ attempt in 3 quarters, Ponders 2 in 1 quarter.

Addition 3. McNabb had some incompletions that where underthrowed. Unfortunetly he had as many completions that where underthrowed as well, thus stoping the momentum of the receiver and efficiently killing the play on the spot. I didn’t se that from Ponder.

Interesting that I learned that the Vikings have rarely drafted a QB in the history of the team. Makes sense when you compare that to how many times the Vikings have made it to the SB.

Greenbay doesnt do the revolving QB scenario like Vikings do. Give Ponder his time. We are not SB bound. No point in keeping McNabb starter. Otherwise, next year will be the proverbial “getting the fee wet” for Ponder. At least getting him in now will have some experience and then a new slate next year.

Ponder was throwing on every down and the Bears knew that. Big disadvantage. McNabb even his completions he is off on alot of his throws. On one throw down the field if he leads the wr it’s a td. On one game against the Bucs the throw in the end zone was off if he completes that at the end of the game it’s over. McNabb is horrible he has a 1-5 record this year. Yes it’s basically his fault. Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Rivers, etc would not have a 1-5 record with this team. Also. I been saying this for months now and everyone was saying like Titus a 10-6 reord is garenteed. I’m ready to leave Ponder in now just to see how he progresses as this season is already over for the vikes but you are spot on about the oline. Tom Brady couldn’t operate behind this terrible line. Correct on Frazier too. No emotion. In over his head. I would like to second the motions of firing him and Musgrave. We need to stretch the field and Musgrave hasn’t. Of course the lack of able wide receivers and lack of time for the qb to throw might have something to do with that. Ya think? It’s time to rebuild around Peterson, Allen and possibly Harvin and Greenway. IMO, the rest are expendable. Even Ponder if we end up 1-15 because then we draft Luck! :)

PURPLEHAZE has got it!!! We need; O-line, Secondary, QB (lets hope Ponder is something), WR’s, and a whole new coaching staff! Lets keep single at linebacker coach!

    To Mr. Frazier:

I just found out that you and McNabb go back to when you were both with the Eagles Mr.Frazier, and maybe thats why you traded our year away by trading for McNabb but I fail to understand what you owe McNabb and why you keep letting him play after he has shown his inability to guide this team at the level that it needs to be. Sunday night’s game against the Bears was a pure disgrace and McNabb should have been benched in the 1st Quarter. But now you are considering letting him play against the Cheese head Packers, Mr.Frazier win lose or Draw why go back five steps instead of going three forward by even thinking of letting McNabb on the field Sunday against Greenbay our season is most likely shot in the butt by now, so either let Mr. Ponder or Mr. Webb Play and at least we may not be the laughing stock of the NFC North by not giving our team the best chance to hold their heads up gainst the Packers. I believe the team will rally around either young QB’s instead of having to groan and say not aqain with McNabb. The Team would never lose their Class and tell you they want either Ponder or Webb instead of McNabb they will do as you say but you owe your Team and fans A heck of lot more than you owe McNabb. You Benched him Sunday so let this be a no Brainer and leave him on the Bench, Besides the Fans are the ones who ultimitly support the team anyway not McNabb. Leave him on the BENCH.

And still the lament of QB debate………. Everyone, if we had an offensive line we would not be debating whether McNabb were good or bad, whether Ponder deserves the job or not. We would be good.

And if we had receiving corps, most of this group doesn’t even acknowledge how BAD ours is other than the occasional “trade Berrian” stuff — if we had Driver, Jennings, Jones, Nelson, cobb, Jermichael Finley at TE…. we would be GREAT!

So let’s reflect on this reality – the ORg blew it and continues to ignore its chronic failures – BUILD a pool of talent in players who are playmakers! Our scouts suck – our GM can’t pick talent to save his life…. It is far more than “bad McNabb” and sure hope I start reading little more lucid stuff here – NO QB is fixing what ails this team – it is endemic!

  224. By vlad19 on Oct 17, 2011 | Reply

purplehaze and KLAWS both posted some good stuff just before mine showed…. this is the sum of all parts. While too many want to scream about how bad McNabb has been, NOBODY is going to look good with the receivers he has, and the ridiculous line he must compensate for with fast feet or erratic and too quick a throw…… Our line couldn’t keep out a small group of Kindergartners on their field-trip! They are not about to keep out Julius Peppers, no matter HOW many knees he is having trouble with!

Fix those two things and even our sorry pass defense is not as consequential because we could at least get into scoring competitions with opponents! Right now we just take notes while we get trounced!

    WAY more than QB….

This team needs a major overall. New QB, fix OL, need game breaker at WR, DL is old and slow (da bears kick their ass), need some help at LBers, and we need better DBs, and a kicker who can kick it out of the endzone.

I have a question.Just 2 short years we were 1 play away from the super bowl. What happened? Why are the vikings so bad now?

  227. By vlad19 on Oct 17, 2011 | Reply

Great question Maryland, and the answer is not simple cuz many are still on the roster…… but we don’t have receivers worth snot other than Harvin. Rice opened a ton of things up being able to stretch field and outleap defenders….. Offensive line we are without Birk and Mckinnie – and while “Lay-z-boy” McKinnie made me sick for his lack of effort, Harbaugh got the pig to play again and having great year in Balt…. but you take two Pro-bowlers that year out of your line and replace with practice squad talent, you get the “great flood” of 2011 that we witness every sunday!

Secondary is and was bad, and only Winfield keeps us with any playmakers back there – that is not whole lot different than before…. our passrush is not quite as potent, so pass D is made to look even worse.

Lastly, QB needing to run for his life doesn’t have time to do anything but immediately check down… allows for anybody to play 8 in box and challenge Peterson ever getting started! There you have a summary of why in my opinion… sad as it is!

My son and I are huge viking fans. For the first time we got NFL ticket.Living in Maryland most seasons we were able to watch 3 or 4 games a season.Watching every game has been both awesome and painful.Last nights game was awful. We got dominated by the team i dislike more than any other team. Our offensive line and safety play last night was pitiful. The vikings can go 1 and 15 and we will still wear the purple every Sunday. My biggest concern is our GM Rick Speilman and his poor drafts.Im also starting to think the vikings get out coached out schemed and out in game adjustments on a weekly basis.

  229. By vlad19 on Oct 17, 2011 | Reply

Last night was best example yet of getting out-coached, out-schemed AND outplayed like I have never seen. Vikes were chasing the Bears shadow all night, always one or two strides behind. Bears are better than they had been playing, and came into themselves against us…. but also, Vikes showed their appalling lack of depth and skill at critical positions – like nearly ALL of them!

Erin Henderson was MIA, Greenway was a ghost and hit as hard. Our safety play was pure comic relief – Abdullah trying to adjust (when he had position A on the post TD to Hester) and spins himself around, then gets POUNDED when trying to meet the TE in pass catch that basically knocked Abdullah’s rear-end into the dirt and his brain out of his brain-pan.

But we will NEVER do anything until we get an offensive line that can hold a block for more than 2 seconds and open a hole or two at the point of attack. ALL the debate is academic without an O-line and a couple pass-catchers.

  230. By rjg on Oct 17, 2011 | Reply

Are we looking at upgrading the coach? Frazier was not ready when he took over and is still not ready to be a head coach at the NFL level. This is obvious by how he is manhandled by the opposing coaches adjustments in the second half.

As a fan who went all the way to see this game with my friend who’s a Bears fan, this was a major disappointment. What you don’t see on TV is the sidelines of the team. It wasn’t even a team, but a bunch of individuals. The bright point was the entry of ponder whos passed were pretty crisp. I know he over through the pass in the end zone, but that spiral was tight. I know some were saying that there wasn’t much pressure, but that line sucks and Ponder did a great job escaping the pocket, and at least getting rid of the ball. Unlike Mcnabb who got taken down with a push.

Let me get this straight. The Vikings have THEE premier back in the league. The QB has definitely seen his better years. And you’re still concentrating on the passing game.
You want to control a game? WORK on the blocking schemes. Let Peterson cram it down their throats thirty or forty times a game to control it. And cut the danged passing game in half.
I’m sorry Mr. Mcnabb, but I haven’t seen you hit a receiver in stride yet this season. If they have to wait for it, they are definitely going to get hammered with little chance of extending. Control the line and RUN!!

I am going to the Vikings Packers game and did not pay good money to see anymore Mcscabb. I will boo Mcnabb the whole game and hold up a Ponder sign right in the endzone if Mcnabb is out there at all.

  236. By rye on Oct 17, 2011 | Reply

Ponder played two drives, threw for 99 yards. He threw for over half of what mcnabb was able to do the entire game. The vikings need to start Ponder.

  237. By rye on Oct 17, 2011 | Reply

Don W. Did you not see the 10 guys at the line of scrimmage? Not even AP can run against that. But even an average QB should be able to hit a quick slant to damage a defense doing that. Something is majorly wrong with the vikings passing game.

Let ponder play, so what if he gets hurt, we have a high enough draft pick anyways that we can go get Some LUCK……………also if we win against the packers I am gonna go over to their bolg and take a HUGE DUMP all over their site/blogs, those clowns have nothing else to do but hang out on our sites

  239. By billbobagons on Oct 17, 2011 | Reply

Let’s look at the big Picture. First there is no cap room unless they let some players go for money to sign new players. That’s the facts so Hutch, Winfield, McNabb, Berrian, Charlie Johnson, Herrera, Kevin Williams, E.J; Griffin and possible trade Toby Gerhart only because we do not use him (or make him a fullback) will all be gone. Too big of contracts on Hutch and Windfield to keep and McNabb is just not good anymore. Then let’s hope Ponder is the answer and I think is his and also AP is set with Booker and King. Then what do you do with the talent Webb just not that impressed with his QB play so maybe try him out at Wide reciever or tightened and Blazerback QB. Then there is Harvin and Devin as wide receiver. The O line has 2 rookies in Love and Fusco that they picked in the 6th round but were are told have second round talent but were hurt and that is why they fell in the draft. Ok so for the O we will need a reciever, OT and Guard. If
    On Offence
    1. QB Ponder
    2. Running Backs Ap. Booker, Toby, king
    3. Receivers. Harvin, Deven and maybe Jenkins
    4. Tight ends Kyle, Webb
    5. O Line Loddermilk, Love, Fusco
Then draft OT, Guard, and Reciever. If Love and Fusco can play or more draft picks for Offense.
    On Defense
    1. Allen and Robinson, Griffen , Guion, Ballard and maybe Evens and one other
    2. Linebacker Greenway, Erin or Griffen and Brinkley
    3. Corners Cook, Sherels, Burton
    4. Safeties Sanford, Abdullah, Raymond
Then draft NT, Safety, and LB.
With a good draft with low picks in each round we could really start to look good next year and by the following year be very good. What do you think? Then of course we must think about the coaching after the year if improvement isn’t made in the coaching.

    vikings needs…

1, get rid of childress number 2
    2. trade berrian for a real receiver
    3. get rid of mc-washup
    4. stop hiring players over 30
5 new coaching staff, preferably ones with common sense
    6. start fusco
    7. get rid of chris cook hes horrible
    8. trade gerhar because he is slow and not very good.
    9. trade cedric griffin and asher allen
    10. either pick up some good free agents, or pickup some players in the draft.

    anyway go vikings

Chris most of your stuff is right on but Cook will be a stud for the Vikings for many years. He has only played about 11 or 12 games and matches up against the big receivers real well.

@purple05 Ponder did a great job. Let Ponder have the reigns now. He needs the experience. You can’t worry about injury- all players deal with that, but to not have him play because you are worried he will get hurt??? This is football! Sure, Ponder has to prove himself, but GIVE HIM THE CHANE TO DO SO! Mcnabb was pitiful. The fact that we fans are screaming for change is warranted AND if what ever happens in the near future is on “Our Heads” as you state, then so be it. We want a winning team. I will let Ponder do my talking for me and when he proves himself to you then you can come and party with us. By the way- this is just fun and debate here. I do not intend to build hard feelings with any of you “fellow fans.” We really want the same thing, right? Looking forward to the next debate after Sunday’s game. Skol Vikes!

Need more imagination……….How about play-action pass on the first play from scrimmage instead of the ole dive off tackle by Peterson? Everyone in the stadium knows Peterson is getting the ball on the first play. Ponder will be good but that won’t help if the guys down field don’t shake the cardboard off of their hands. So much basic execution lacking and it all can’t be on McNabb…. It wasn’t a great idea to institute a brand new, complicated offense with no time to learn it this season. Now they are stuck with it and so are we! And the mix of plays called continues to disappoint. Time to make the best of the rest of the season and hope that the embarrassment stops.

We are a rudderless ship caught in a storm and the crew is not pulling together so were sinking fast because nobody’s assuming a leadership roll it’s time for the players to pull their weight or get the *ell off the ship as for the coaching wow really! stop feeding the fans all this bull and admit that your in over your heads we don;t even look like a good college team no game plan , no adjustments ,no fire , no heart , and no accountability , listen to the great fans that bleed purple that love this team that support this team and we will continue to do so we just don’t like what were getting back!!!!!!!!!

@teamkillin: 98 was a great team but I was never a fan of Denny G. (and boy was I right during the Atlanta game) and with that offensive line, even T-Jack might of had some success…….at this pace, we ought to have another run in 2020…..

  248. By billbobagons on Oct 18, 2011 | Reply

Could not be happier that the Vikings are starting the future of the rebuilding process today. It has been since Culpeper since we had a young QB. Ponder has a chance to be really good and a good QB makes receivers much better. Tom Brady won 3 superbowls without great receivers. I hope there are some other changes to on the O line. Starting with Love and Fusco lets see if they really are 2nd round talent like the Vikings claim they where. If there good we only need a LT if Hutch plays 1 more year. Otherwise we need a guard to. I think Loadhult will be ok. Then start working Webb in as a receiver so he can get on the field more.

    1. In the pre- game show Brian Urlacher told the Nation that they would be loading the box on AP. It took us until the second Qaurter to run misdirections,
rollouts, maybe 1 reverse. We were running straight at the loaded line.
    How stupid can you be?

2.After J Allens sack and fumble and the offense scored you could actually feel the momentum shift. I then started jumping up and down for a full minute and Screamed Don’t Kick it to Hester, Don’t Kick it to Hester. Yes I predicted it.
Our Special teams coach is the Dumbest person in the stadium.

    3. Draft some Offensive Lineman or we are done.

Here’s an idea—- 3 Quarterbacks—- 2 are new, one is aged—all talented, all unproven— 5 losses. Ponder to start a good move—- keep going = open competition = all QB’s play on Sunday. Each QB gets a series. Must end drive with points to get another series or new series = new QB. this would stop the one dimensional AP offense and force our opposition to prepare for all 3. continue till seasons end. result = QB position understood and known for next season.

  253. By billbobagons on Oct 20, 2011 | Reply

Unless McNabb is a positive influence on Ponder and helps him in every way he can Cut him !!!!!. I hope if Ponder gets hurt they put in Webb or else switch Webb to a tightend to go with Rudolph next year. Along with Harvin they could run the New England system with having the great AP in the backfield. Then see if Devin is going to be are guy to stretch the field or draft a deep treat receiver. Along with getting Love and Fusco in to make sure they can play so the Vikings know how many O line guys they will need. It is ovious it is all about moving the ball and not stopping the ball with the Packers defence rated 29 against the pass and New England defence last.
