No Surprises On Vikings Injury Report

Posted by Mike Wobschall on October 12, 2011 – 2:47 pm

The Vikings and Chicago Bears each issued their first injury reports of the week on Wednesday. For the Vikings, there were no surprises. Here are the details…

CB Antoine Winfield, who missed last week’s game against the Arizona Cardinals with a neck injury, has been improving in recent days but did not participate in practice on Wednesday. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Winfield limited in practice or even sit out on Thursday, but perhaps he’ll see some action on Friday and have a chance to suit up on Sunday night.

Players limited in practice on Wednesday for the Vikings were WR Percy Harvin (ribs), LB E.J. Henderson (knee) and LB Kenny Onatolu (hamstring). S Husain Abdullah (pelvis) and DE Jared Allen (eye) were full participants.

For the Bears, DE Julius Peppers (knee) missed practice, as did WR Earl Bennett (chest), OT Gabe Carimi (knee) and DT Matt Toeaina. CB Charles Tillman (knee) was limited and DE Corey Wooten (hand) was a full participant.

AGAIN, I’M HAVING A HARD TIME UNDERSTANDING WHY TEAMS HAVEN’T ATTACKED THE LION’S FRONT 9 ROTATING DEFENSIVE LINEMEN. IT’S BEEN DONE BEFORE WITH GREAT EFFECT.

JUST THE FACT THAT THEY’RE ROTATING 9 D-LINEMEN IS A STRONG CLUE THAT NONE OF THEM ARE CONDITIONED TO GO, SAY, 8 PLAYS STRAIGHT!

BECAUSE I’M A VIKINGS FAN, I HAVE A VESTED INTEREST IN ANY OPPORTUNITY TO WATCH THE PACKERS LOSE. SO I WAS KEENLY AWARE OF HOW JOHN ELWAY & THE BRONCOS LITERALLY DECIMATED THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THAT INTIMIDATING FRONT 4 WITH REGGIE WHITE.

REMEMBER, VIKINGS FANS? SUPER BOWL XXXII — ELWAY & SHANAHAN HAD THE BRONCOS OFFENSE IN PRACTICALLY A NON-STOP NO-HUDDLE OFFENSE WHICH NOT ONLY PREVENTED REGGIE WHITE, GILBERT BROWN & CO. TO ROTATE, BUT IT COMPLETELY REDUCED THEM TO MUSH! GILBERT BROWN, AT ONE POINT, FELL TO HIS KNEE WHILE VISIBLY STRUGGLING TO SUCK IN AS MUCH OXYGEN AS POSSIBLE! HE WAS USELESS!

WHY AREN’T MORE TEAMS USING THE NO-HUDDLE TO PREVENT SCHWARTZ FROM HIS CRITICAL D-LINE SUBSTITUTIONS? JUST LIKE PEYTON DOES – BRING YOUR TEAM UP TO THE LINE & TAKE YOUR TIME TO CALL THE PLAYS WITH THE PLAYERS ON THE FIELD — AND IF THEY TRY TO BRING IN A SUB, QUICK SNAP THE BALL. KING KONG WILL BE HEAVING FOR O2 WITHIN MINUTES.

ALSO, I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR A WILDCAT PACKAGE IN OUR OFFENSE WHICH INCLUDES ADRIAN, PERCY, RUDOLF & JOE WEBB.

I WOULD PREFER IF YOU PRESENTED THE DEFENSE WITH JUST ONE LOOK WHICH CAN BE EQUALLY EFFECTIVE AS A SCREEN; QUICK PASS; COUNTER RUN; SWEEP; OPTION RUN ETC — ALL AUDIBLE DEPENDENT — BUT WITHOUT CHANGING THE LOOK — & NEVER GIVING THE D A CLUE OF WHAT’S COMMING.

WHO WOULD THE DEFENSE KEY IN ON?

Maybe we should rotate our QB’s like defensive substitutions lol

ATTENTION VIKINGS FANS: PLEASE STOP SAYING THAT PONDER IS THE ANSWER- HE IS NOT!! WE HAVE NOT REALLY SEEN THIS KID PLAY SO WHO IS TO SAY THAT IF HE GETS TO START THAT THE W’s WILL START ROLLING IN? BE LOGICAL! I WOULD TAKE WEBB OVER PONDER BECAUSE HE HAS ONE THING PONDER DOESN’T- *EXPERIENCE* IN STARTING *AND* WINNING A NFL GAME. I AM NOT SAYING HE SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN A CHANCE ( my guess is he will fold like a cheap card table) BUT HE IS DEFINITLY NOT AND I REPEAT NOT THE ANSWER!!!

@IMW you can’t possibly know that till he is under center and playing. You are making an assumption that since he hasn’t played yet he can’t. Three rookies are currently playing well in the NFL. Cam Newton is playing like he’s a Vet. So tone your opinion down. Everyone has the right to theirs and turn of your #%%@#$ caps.

@ Paul Lions are playing good football and obviously your assumption will be tried eventually or was looked into and disguarded. Until someone figures a way to beat them get in line and wait and see.

  11. By Mike B. on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

@Paul The Lions have been drafting high for several years now. They have 2 DL they have picked in the first round. These two are beasts and now that one is healthy any team is going to have a hard time with those two. Lions due to their previous years have changed and acquired real talent on their team. Looks like their QB is for real and they have a blue chip WR so it is not surprised they are winning. These aren’t the terrible Lions of yester year.

I would also add that the NFC North is now the toughest Division in the League. Lots of talent in the NFC North. Parity has arrived in the Norsk Division.

IMW – Why is experience the only factor you want to consider? McNabb has 13-years of experience, but we are all aware that isn’t making the difference in his skills. Webb has the physical talent, but does he have a good enough head on his shoulders to get the job done? Ponder was drafted to be the future of this team. If you want to wait until he has experience before you give him a chance to start, then we’ll never see him play!

Webb has started in 3 games. How can that really qualify as experience? Remember that he was a 7th-round pick compared to Ponder’s 1st round selection. That alone should tell anyone that Ponder is expected to be much more ready to play at this level, even if he has a few games less experience because Webb has a year on him.

Either way though, I’d like to see one of the young QBs get into the game. McNabb was brought in to succeed while the young QBs get a feel for the pace of the NFL. McNabb has been unsuccessful for 5-straight games. When will it be time to start getting the future of the team on the field?

    Repugnantcants just say no……..good job!

  21. By Shawn on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

@IMW … good point, I wonder what these people expect? Ponder should never play because as long as he doesnt play he will never have experiance which means he should never play because he doesnt have experiance

Thats why the Vikings as an organization keep filling in the QB graveyard … this organization is all about QBs with experiance

We should trade Ponder because the guy has no experiance … maybe we could get John Beck from the redskins, Beck has experiance so he must be better than Ponder, right?

He says he works on making plays and blows off the plays he doesn’t makes. He doesn’t listen to the fans and goes does his job. He sounds like a pretty typical vet QB. It’s up to Frazier if he is making enough good plays to keep him the starting QB. So far Frazier is keeping him in. Frazier says it’s mechanics McNabb says it’s making plays when he has to. Is there a disconnect here or what.

@Rocksalt Republicans don’t want to pour more of our taxpayers money down the drain. That doesn’t mean they will not vote for a Stadium that will be a moneymaker and a job creater. Problem is the Wilfs need to spend the money to prove to the taxpayers that 1. Why the Metrodome is a poor facility? and 2 Why building a new stadium will benefit the taxpayer. That’s what it comes down too. Wilf show us why you want us to pay more taxes for the new Stadium. I believe it’s a gold mine, but I am not paying the taxes. I am a republican and I would vote for it. The jobs bill has nothing to do with the stadium bill

Where are the ads from the Wilfs explaining the need for the Stadium or why the Metrodome is bad? If I want to get the support of the voters and the representatives, maybe I would think about some tv spots and radio spots. Not just rely on fans and the time the games are played or players interviews. Wilfs need to get out the word and say hey We need this stadim for you the taxpayers. This team is part of Minneasota and your support will keep it here. It’s going to create this many jobs and expected revenues is this. I haven’t seen any of that when I was in Minneasota in Sept.

  54. By Mike B. on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

I do think someone is taking for granted that since the Twins got Target Field it is assumed the Vikings will get theres. That’s not something anyone should take to the bank. Many saw the Metrodome as the perfect Venue for football. You need to convince them that this Venue is out of date and out of touch with other NFL Venues or where it rates agaisn’t the other teams. Wilfs need to sell the Stadium to Minneasotans. I think that is what is lacking.

We went in and prevented that from happening with very low loss of life and material. don’t take that we use our force and now we are bullies attitude I am not buying it. It’s apparent that the only way the “fans” will be supportive and have their back is if we make the playoffs every year. Have one bad game and their calling for the coaches head. That is just it he is putting his job as coach on the line. We are just point the things we see and converse between each other about it. Sunday morning I grab my horns and ready for the game. If all it is going to be is short du mp pas ses with mixing in AP hand offs…………. Ponder and Webb can do that. I do love how McNabb takes care of the b all but who says neither of them could do that just as well.

This is just my suggestion. Start McNabb through the bye week. Just because you than have an extra week to evaluate if McNabb is starting to get it and get hot. OR Fully understand that it is time to move on. One could then start Ponder after the bye week but I would wait just one more week since wk 10 is at Lambeau against that Don Capers defense. That would be a tough fire to be thrown into for Ponder. Wait for the next week, at home, wk 11, against the Raiders. That would be a much better situation for Ponder. Just an idea but for Ponders sake and to leave no doubt on the (should we bench or not bench) McNabb subject it would be ideal to wait for week 11 at home against the Raiders.

McNabb goes 3 and out … Ponder plays next drive if Ponder gets a TD he gets 2 more drives and on his second drive he goes 3 and out he loses the next drive and its Webbs turn

and back to football that is one of the biggest things about it to, 6-10 last year, and not enough money to lock up all of the stars from 2009, hence why ray edwards and sidney rice departed there was no way to give them and green and ap their lucrative contracts. so i believe next season will be a dangerous time for the other teams of the division we will be a sleeper team next season

Same should be done with Webb. Backfield, wideout, quarterback, trick plays, you name it but we need to take advantage of a gem that is on the roster. If anything else to at least get some great trade value from him but that wont happen if teams never see him on the field.

@ IMW… Your opinion is nonsensical. By your own logic you prove that you haven’t a clue what you are talking about. “We haven’t seen him play so who’s to say the W’s would start rolling in?” You are right, we haven’t seen him play… how can you criticize that which you haven’t seen? How do you know that the W’S WOULDN’T start rolling in. Think before you type.

Most of us that are calling for Ponder don’t really expect him to be any better than McNabb in the short run. We don’t expect wins because he’s in just like we don’t expect to win with McNabb at the helm. What we’d like to see is whether or not he can play at this level… if he has the potential to be “the guy”. If anyone thinks this team is going to see the right side of .500 they are delusional.

There is an old saying. you can keep your mouth shut and people might think that you’re an idiot, or you can open it and prove it……I have, however, lived in Canada for 54 years so I feel I am a little bit more qualified than you are in the knowledge of which way the political winds blow here. and they won’t blow towards any Mexican/American/Canadian par currency,no matter how bad the economy gets.

Apparantly Webb is lacking something critical needed to become a starting QB in this league. He has the arm strength and mobility. His accuracy is considerably better than McNabbs, from what I’ve seen. I don’t think the man is lazy. The only thing that I can deduce is that he must lack something between the ears. I can’t think of another reason why the coaches never even mentioned his name as a candidate for our franchise quarterback.

Haha Nova, neither. Actually I do rent, but only cars.

I cannot believe how many of you have written of this season. The time to evaluate Ponder will come but it isn’t now. Why not instead start focusing on the unholy beatdown we are going to put on Jay Cutler this Sunday.

Good suggestion CandadianVF. Personally, I’m surprised that the Bears ofensive line is doing so poorly. I thought Tice was supposed to be this great OL coach…but I can’t wait to see Allen and Robison take advantage of their deficiencies.

I just hope that we’ll be able to keep better track of the underneath receivers this week. Hester and Knox have plenty of potential for yards after the catch, so they need to be blanketed tightly wherever they are on the field.

McNabb is going to play in his hometown of Chicago. I’m hopeful that he will want his play to be at a very high level. Maybe, BB will shake loose a cover guy and catch a pigskin or two. Otherwise, cut ties and admit that the BB experiment is wasting cap space and not giving us a better chance to win. Cutler rubs me the wrong way, but he is moving the ball down the field with no protection. When the game ends there can be no doubt that A.P. is the best back in football, and Matt Forte is a quality back. If it is the other way around, we’re in trouble.

  344. By Woodboat on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

I think Cutler is going to be wishing he hadn’t asked for that trade before the season is out (if he isn’t already). I think the Vikes win this weekend, period.

@CanadianVF and others…. step out of your Vikes fan shoes for a moment and just look at this team compared to others in the division/conference. If you rooted for (pick another team), you’d look at the Vikes and laugh. We have no shot at digging our way out of this 1-4… particularly because we EARNED that record.

As far as passing on Luck for a WR… any WR… you must be high. When EVERY analyst says he’s the best pro-qb prospect in decades, you don’t pass him up. I’ve heard that the number one pick trade value this year is 3-1sts and 3-2nds. There is NO way that a team that stinks bad enough to EARN that number one pick has a QB good enough to pass on Luck.

  345. By Woodboat on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

@Arrow86…. I believe that McNabb always WANTS to play at a high level regardless of where he is playing… he just isn’t capable.

Where does Dre Kirkpatrick play college ball?

  347. By CanadianVF on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

Good points Woodboat, I agree with a lot of what you said but do we know for sure that Luck is going to go into the draft this year or is he going to go back for his Seniior year? Also if our record was bad enough to get the pick and we took him then I guess picking Ponder in the first round this past draft was a waste.

  348. By Woodboat on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

No, I don’t think picking Ponder would be a waste, if we give him a little playing time. If he flashes a little, he’d have trade value.

If he really looked good (like he may be the next big thing… but still didn’t win enough to get us out of last place… not sure how that would work), then MAYBE you shop that number one pick. SOMEONE is going to go Ditka and trade away the franchise for Luck if he gets shopped.

Makes me think more about it, now that I’ve typed it. I wouldn’t trade the required picks to get him (does he have the value?), but I wouldn’t trade him if I had him (apparantly he does…) I’ve contradicted myself here…

I guess its fear. I wouldn’t have the guts to trade him. If he turned out to be Joe Montana and I’d let him go, I’d have to throw myself off a bridge….

  349. By Woodboat on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

As far as him coming out this year or not… I’m sorry to say that I don’t follow college football much (I know, I know…). That being said, I thought that he was eligible to come out last year. That puts him 3 years removed from high school. Unless he red shirted, this is his last year at Stanford regardless, yes?

  350. By CanadianVF on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

I always find it so interesting, how some guys can play at the pro level and some cannot. I never figured that Dalton could play, Newton didn’t look good in the pre season but now is putting up big numbers, even the Bills quarterback is starting to look like a keeper and yet if he was at a combine or something he would be the last guy you would pick, but he just seems to be able to make plays.

  351. By CanadianVF on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

I thought I read that he was a junior, but I could be wrong. I will have to look it up. The other thing is those Stanford guys are pretty smart and he may have promised his mother that he would get his degree. (ha! ha!) But with the money he will be making he probably will not need a degree.

  352. By Woodboat on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

Agreed, CanadianVF. Trent Dilfer killed the Vikes for picking Ponder, and I usually tend to agree with him. That being said, I like the kid, and I REALLY want to see if he has what it takes. Really, that’s what I want out of this season… to see if Ponder can play. If he can, my hopes for this team going forward (next season and beyond…) are going to skyrocket. Playing McNabb is just prolonging the wait…

  353. By CanadianVF on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

You were right Woodboat, he is a senior. I know I like what I saw of Ponder in the preseason, his avbility to move and buy time, I really hope he becomes our franchise quarterback. It is just hard for me to give up on a season so early because I am an optimistic person. It would be one thing if we were terrible and getting killed each game but with a little luck and some better coaching our record could be a lot better. I think we still have a lot of talent on this team. Mcnabb has been disappointing, I was hoping the more he got comfortable, the better he would play but it is not happening so far.

  354. By VegasVike on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

Chicago will TORCH our secondary in the final minutes for the win, that’s how it goes against da bears. Year after year

  355. By Woodboat on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

I feel ya, CVF. I wish they were doing better as well. I just look at who we have to catch to get a wildcard spot, and it isn’t looking good. Green bay or the Lions look like they’ll take one of the wildcard spots. The NFC west shouldn’t see more than one team in the playoffs… looks like SF at this point. The south… Saints and TB are looking good, and the Falcons might get it going (although they look like the Vikes at this point…). The east… who knows? Right now it looks like the Redskins, with the Giants and Cowboys doing okay.

So, I’d guess the Lions get one wildcard. That means we have to outplay the Bucs, Giants, and Cowboys at a minimum in order to get that last spot. I don’t like our chances…

  356. By Woodboat on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

Got to factor in that we have 3 more games vs. the top 2 teams (recordwise) in the conference. The only silver lining is that GB may have their seed sewn up by week 17 and give us the game… :)

  357. By CanadianVF on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

It wouldn’t look so hopeless if we were getting good play at the quarterback position, but we aren’t. You are probably right. You just never know though, Stafford gets hurt and suddenly the things change dramatically. There is the optimist in me again and I hope Stafford doesn’t get hurt.

  358. By Woodboat on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

Oh, sure. That’s why they play the games. If any of the starting QBs go down for any of the contenders, they are done. This is a QB driven league, and ours appears to be driving while under the influence :/

  359. By Woodboat on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

Man, I hope you are wrong, VegasVike. I hope that Cutler is to tired to throw the ball from picking himself up off the carpet by the end of the third quarter. That dude has got to be held together by spit and duct tape by now with the beating he’s been taking…

  360. By Woodboat on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

I don’t really care one way or the other for Cutler, but I felt sorry for the dude monday night…

  361. By CanadianVF on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

Ha! Ha! thats funny. I thought at the beginning of this year that McNabb would have a real desire to show the league that the time in Washington was not his best and that he wasn’t finished as a professional player. He would come in with a real desire to prove to everyone that he can still play but I guess not.Anyways enjoyed the chat , its getting late here in Canada and morning comes early. Peace out.

I just watched the Presser of McNabb and I have to say, he is laughable. If he doesn’t want us to criticizes him about his Mechanics, then how about McNabb put up, or shut up. Prove us doubters wrong, that you aren’t washed up. From now on, start playing at a high level and we will start getting off your back.

  364. By Parody on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

Woodboat – We play Chicago in week 17. We’re going to be playing our second game with Green Bay really early this year, right after the bye week.

Every time I watch the vikings these days…I can’t help but say the name “barry sanders”…when it comes to adrian peterson…I know we support ap with talent a lot more then barry..and I’m not sure if anyone has noticed, but most superbowl champions have a good-great QB(and we all know mcblind isn’t)…so the question I keep asking myself is “do the vikings not know nfl history?…isn’t the objective to win and not coast in a season?” We are coasting and not trying to win…its almost as if coach frazier doesn’t want to be wrong…listen VIKINGS: “YOU WERE SHAMEFULY WRONG!!!”

I think all this Mcnabb talk is overdone. I’ll be surprised if he is still the starter after the by-week. And I’m guessing this is the strategy out of preseason.

Guys… the important thing is that BB is back and he’s averaging one catch every two games. Since he didn’t have one last game riding the pine, he’s due this week. Look for him to have a big game with one catch of about 10-15 yards, continuing his “break out” year. Mike W will blog about this amazing catch on Monday proving all of us doubters wrong.

What they DO want, what they intensely desire, is ripping us off.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/10/13/vikings-say-more-than-once-community-has-contacted-team-regarding-a-possible-move/

With the Metrodome lease expiring after the 2011 season, Bagley said the Vikings refuse to extend the lease absent a plan for a new venue. And if the lease expires absent a plan for a new venue, all sorts of things could happen.

Most significantly, Bagley said that “more than one community” has contacted the team about a possible move. Though Bagley declined to identify the communities involved, he believes that the efforts will become public if/when the lease expires.
