Frazier Says Vikings Haven’t Forgotten About Webb

Posted by Mike Wobschall on October 11, 2011 – 7:19 am

QB Joe Webb was one of the few bright spots late in the 2010 season, and his success late last season was an encouraging sign for many Vikings fans who believe in his playmaking ability. As Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier and his new coaching staff began making plans for the 2011 season, they made it clear that Webb A) would compete for time at QB and B) would be involved in the offense one way or the other, whether at QB or at another skilled position.

Frazier and his staff were true to their word, as Webb competed in training camp at QB and made progress. Then with Donovan McNabb installed as the starter, the Vikings worked on offensive packages that featured Webb. He’s been on the field occasionally this season, but not to the degree that satisfies the public’s desires.

But rest easy, Webb enthusiasts, because Frazier has ensured that the team does plan to utilize Webb’s talents on offense during the season. Wisely, though, the Vikings head coach wouldn’t divulge much more detail than that.

“He still fits in,” Frazier said while meeting with reporters on Monday. “It’s something that we haven’t forgotten about and at some point, it will come back to life. But we haven’t forgotten about it. It’s something that is still part of our offense.”

That’s good news, because there’s no denying that Webb is a playmaker who can be an asset to any offense. This offensive staff has shown some creativity this season in how they’ve used both Lorenzo Booker (double reverse last week) and Percy Harvin (end-arounds vs. Kansas City and Arizona), so it won’t be surprising to see that same creativity put to work at some point to feature Webb.

oohh yea!! Who are you trying to fool Coach Frazier? Why don’t you do us all a favor and forget about McNabb! worthless man can’t even step up in to the leadership role thats suppose to be his, SURE! why not just let my RB do it instead! after all McNabb is only getting paid 5 mil, surely that can’t be enough to be the worst statistical QB in the game so he hands over his leadership role as well. Good Job McNabb!!

Talk is cheap so I will believe it when I see Webb on the field more. Just a thought with a running backs life so short and with having AP in his 5th year already, why with knowing this was going to be a ruff year with new coaches, system, players and no OTA would you not get your quarterback of the future in there to get a year under his belt with AP, Harvin, Rudolph and Toby along with the 3 O line guys that stand on the side line with as bad as are O line has played now. That way by next year with a good solid draft and OTA we could be on the right track and and being good next year in AP 6th year and not wasting 1 more year with an Old or unexperienced QB so it is AP 7th year before we have a QB with a year under his belt. Frazier has to start thinking of the future and show the fans that he is doing everything He can do to make sure next year we are moving forward with a young talented team with many great players still in there prime with AP, Jared, Greenway, Cook, Toby and more. So please know the fans will be much happier to let this year go and let us see all the young guys get there work in this year.

What the heck is McNabb doing in the great black and blue division in the first place for? Giving his current stature, seems he is better suited for the NFC West. it’s time the Vikings to start earning back some respect in our division, coaches need to figure it out.

As a season ticket holder for many years I couldn’t be more dissappointed with the wasted pick on Ponder when you brought in a worthless veteran player. Mcnabb sucks. Get rid of him or give me my money back.

    I WANT WEBB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No brainer here!! What is taking you so long to implement a game plan to include Joe Webb!! Put him at H-Back or wideout and even QB, but let him throw the ball once in a while!! Two tough division games coming up with Chicago and Green Bay!! Since we got off to the bad start we need to win them both!! I really like our chances in Chi-town!! AP should have a great night against a porous Bears defense!!

McNabb is NO Viking! he is a washed up hasbeen Eagle, he should be ashamed to even put those horns on his head, those horns mean something and it’s a symbol of a great football team with great players of past and present. Makes me sick!!

So what’s the delay Coach Frazier in featuring some plays with Webb? or is there any time that’s particularly better than the other? What is the delay in benching McNabb? What is the delay in getting Ponder in there? eeeehhh!!!

  9. By Jeffbleedspurple on Oct 11, 2011 | Reply

I don’t know if you noticed Coach Frazier, but we are 1-4, bottom of the pile in the NFC North, no teams respects our QB, that makes sense! No teams respects our WR’s, that makes sense, QB can’t get the ball to them in the first place and you want to delay potential game changing talent, that does not make sense! So far nothing makes sense.

How about sit McNugget. Then for a special Webb package have Ponder as Qb and Webb at Rb toss the testicle to Webb if there is space he can run if some one is open throw it to him.

  11. By zmotalk on Oct 11, 2011 | Reply

They were ready to use Webb last week but by leading by so much it would have been a waste of showing the package. I am very dissapointed in the lack of the coaching staff/ Mcnabb using Rudolph. He is 6’6 with a huge wing span and great hands, Sounds like a match up problem for any team. USE HIM

  12. By DAveJr on Oct 11, 2011 | Reply

Mcnabb is not the answer for our team. He never has been an accurate passer. He has always been really good at stretching out plays until these last couple of years. Mcnabbs legs and hips are the size of linemens and his acceleration shows it. He just isnt what he use to be, Ponder can run circles around him. Put in Ponder or Webb because our O line is not built for Mcnabb. We need a decision maker and better movement.

Use your talent better. BB should be resting on the bench I mean he has already done so much this year. That would allow Aromashodu to have more playing time and then they can use the 2 tight end set that they were raving about. I’m sure Rudolph and Shank would be able to do more then triple what BB has done so how about taking advantage of their talent.

As hard as it is to find quality players with outstanding talent that are also good role models, the vikings should be relishing Joe Webb. Its a no brainer to put him in the game. And not in a knuckle head wildcat play that has him running up the middle. Get him out in the open field. Let the defense try and cover him on a role out with Kyle Rudolph, Shiancoe, Harvin and Adrian Peterson all fading with him. Unstoppable! As a matter of fact, tell the defense what we’re running and Joe and company with still make something happen.

i think they need to Utilize Rudolph WAY more, he is a young kid, bolster his confidence and make him feel like an elite TE from the get and this kid could end up growing some he is already 6’6″ and can pick the ball up off the ground, i think he should line up at #1 if he could learn the routes the could be ridiculously good, pretty fast too

  50. By Jake on Oct 11, 2011 | Reply

They should bench McNabb. Let’s face it our passing game sucks. I don’t think it would get much worse with Webb or Ponder back there.

If you feel like Ponder isn’t quite ready and you don’t want to get him hurt or embarrassed out there, then throw in Webb. The only reason our offense even scores is AP and I think Webb can complete handoffs just fine.

I get using McNabb if he gives you more chance to win but it sure looks like he holds the team back and what is the logic in using an old guy who isn’t as good as the young guy.

  51. By Snake on Oct 11, 2011 | Reply

Please bench Mcnabb!!! The guy doesn’t even hand the ball off to the correct side half the time, and throws the ball to the ground the other half. I get it that we just got our first win and it would be crazy to bench the quarterback after your first win, but he had almost nothing to do with us winning. And did u all see him show off on that run to the endzone? I almost didn’t wanna cheer the touchdown i was so irritated with him in there. I know i’m no expert or i would be the 1 coaching instead of writing a blog, but come on now i’m sure i’m not the only 1 here confused on seein that loser in the game. GO VIKES!

  57. By kevin on Oct 11, 2011 | Reply

Joe Webb’s talent is being wasted on the sideline, he would be a starting quarterback, runningback, or a receiver on other teams, and also a punt returner, kick off returner on other NFL teams. Or just a decoy. Also last year if they would of gave Joe Webb some kjnd of role with Brett Favre and use him more sparingly they could have more of a championship team. The Vikings need to be more flexible. Joe Webb, Percy Harvin. and Adrian Peterson, if they were on the field continously and together, and played there role, all three of them, and Toby as a blocker, they would be unstoppable. Substitute Pointer now and then, use him as a wildcat, but there is too much wasted talent on the sideline.

  58. By Parody on Oct 11, 2011 | Reply

jp – That video is not very impressive. It spent half the time replaying a shot of a busted play, where Luck was able to knock out a fumble after a turnover, and spent the rest of the time showing Luck make completions to WRs who were wide open down field…not even in stride every time. If Luck is as great as he’s hyped up to be, there must be a ton of plays he’s made that are more impressive for a highlight reel. I don’t want a QB who can strip the ball. That would just mean that you expect him to give up a lot of turnovers.

Anyways, we’re not getting Luck even IF we somehow land the #1 draft selection. We have Ponder, and would be foolish to waste a second consecutive first round pick on a QB. In that event, the draft pick becomes huge trade value and we get 2 or 3 top-notch starters out of the deal.

klwedge – Did you watch the presser, or are you taking this information from what others have told you about it? If you did watch it, you should be smart enough to understand the sarcasm in his claim that he didn’t hear the boos. His demeaner was very clear that he was light-heartedly brushing that fan reaction aside, because the team was finally able to win him the first game of the year.

Frazier is very aware that we’re not satisfied with McNabb, but he has no reason to throw in the towel on him until it becomes absolutely impossible for the team to make the playoffs. That was the intent when we traded for him, and that is what will be expected of him. I don’t agree with this decision, but it is what it is.

Not it don’t take a rocket scientist to see where he should play……especially with those Huge soft hands that measure almost 11” and 34” arms and He has 4.4 speed…..START HIM OUT as a possession receiver and/or slot back. We have a current receiver that is horrible and can not catch a pass that hits him in the chest,,,COACH …………….TAKE NOTICE
