With Winfield Down, Asher Allen & Chris Cook Must Step Up

Posted by Mike Wobschall on October 9, 2011 – 9:37 am

One of the Vikings best defensive players – CB Antoine Winfield – will not play today against the Arizona Cardinals because of a neck injury suffered in last week’s game against Kansas City. As the Vikings get ready to kick it off against a Cardinals team that features arguably the NFL’s best WR in Larry Fitzgerald, a pair of young CBs must step up in Winfield’s absence.

Those young CBs are Asher Allen and Chris Cook. Expect Cook to play almost exclusively on the outside, while Allen will likely play a lot of the nickel CB snaps over the slot receiver that Winfield usually handles. Also, this could mean added playing time for Marcus Sherels.

Earlier this week, Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier was asked about the possibility of Winfield not playing and what that would mean for Allen.

“He’s had a good two days of practice here,” Frazier said on Thursday. “He’s practicing as if he’s going to have to play, which is the right attitude to take because it may very well turn out to be that way.”

As for replacing Winfield, Frazier knows you can’t really replace a player of his ability with just a few days’ notice. With that said, Frazier does expect the guys who are on the field to step up and held the defense contribute to a victory.

“Antoine is a hard guy to replace,” Frazier acknowledged. “He does so many things for us. Even the play that he got injured on, he’s making a tackle that a lot of guys in the secondary might not be able to make in our league. The first play of the game they (Kansas City) ran to his side and I was surprised they did. And he tackled the back in the backfield, blows up a tackle for a loss or a zero gain.

“So it’s hard to replace that at the corner position, but you’ll have someone in there who will do a good job, but it’s not Antoine Winfield.”

bittersweet… Antoine is a prime performer but Jenkins and aromoshadu taking berrian’s spot, if we win I hope Frazier can realize the thrifty talent he has on his roster.

Cook is the best Pure Corner on the team. I dotn care if he gives up a zillion yards to Fitz. He has proven to us that hes better than Griffin. I dont know if he can lock Fitz up. But can he contain him? I believe he can. Hopefully he can get his 1st pick as well.

Whats wrong with bb? Is he sick of running routes for a guy who cant throw. I dont like him at all, but i hate mcchoke more. Maybe he would have a break out year if they putt in Ponder and he will at least try and stretch the field with him.

I would like for the first play to be a pass, and watch all the lineman just let the rush go through at mcchoke. I think thats the only way he would get benched is if he is hurt.

2 catches and targeted 16 times time this year for BB according to reports. What the heck is going on ? why is BB using Twitter

I think maybe they realize that there is something wrong with BB and it was time to see what we can do without him.

The keys to winning this game today is for one our offensive line needs to stpe it up IMMEDIATELY!! Two- Donovan needs to take Many many shots down the field. I believe he is cautious for the fact that some will probably be intercepted but I would rather try to throw bombs and score than to continue being the laughing stock of the NFL right now. If he throws an INT the O-line needs to step up and make a stop and our defense needs to handle the rest. Three- our defense needs to keep it together in the second half, they always seem to fall apart. Four- our offense needs to score score score and do not stop! Maybe Mcnabb wouldn’t be scared to take shots down the field if he didn’t have to hear all the smack talking from the fans. Think about it! What else could it be?

I am wondering if this benching is due to the tiff last weekend with a local politician.

Aromashodu should be able to earn atleast more playing time which should allow the Vikings to demote BB to the 5 wr spot. Jenkins, Harvin, Aromashodu, and Camarillo are easily better then Brick-Hands Berrian. Arceneaux is probly better activate him already and drop the master of drops.

Bashing someone who is supporting the stadium bill is more than likely the stupidest thing BB could have done. I mean they were fine with him playing like a ghost of a player but he opened his mouth and then they finally understand he can’t play.

Hope Cook can limit Fitz enough so that he can’t hurt us. Finally healthy so I think he will really develop this year into a true starting corner.

Great win today. Our QB proved to me that he is ready to retire. Mcnabb is so done. So glad Peterson and especially our defense knows how to take control of the game. Our receivers should be given huge kudos as they were all so patient despite Mcnabbs pitiful arm. Hope everyone saw what I saw this game. It was a QB wake-up call and Mcnabb should be scared. Berrian had his best game yet… Oooh, did I say that out loud? Great job Vikes! glad you are giving my purple-bleeding heart something to cheer about.
