Vikings Take 20-0 Lead To Locker Room At Halftime

Posted by Mike Wobschall on September 25, 2011 – 12:35 pm

We’ve heard this song before. Hopefully this week it has a different ending. The Vikings have built a commanding 20-0 lead in the 1st half and head to the locker room off a terrific punt return by Marcus Sherels that set up a TD connection between QB Donovan McNabb and TE Visanthe Shiancoe.

Credit the Vikings defense for pressuring Matthew Stafford – without the use of extra pressure from rushing CBs or LBs – and holding the potent Lions offense to zero points, only 4 first-downs and just 50 yards of offense.

For the Vikings offense, Percy Harvin and Adrian Peterson are stealing the show. Harvin has 2 receptions for 26 yards and two rushes for 41 yards. Peterson has been gashing the Lions defense to the tune of 6.1 yards per carry (73 yards on 12 carries) and he also has a rushing TD on the day. WR Michael Jenkins has also been a factor and is McNabb’s favorite target through 2 quarters – he has 5 receptions for 39 yards.

Now the question will be, can the Vikings play well in the 2nd half and not let the lead melt away? Detroit begins the half with the ball, so we might know pretty quickly how much fight the Lions have left.

Check back after the game for an update and stick with vikings.com all throughout the day for updates and information, including live streaming of post-game press conferences.

Now for the big question: Can the team bring the same intensity back from the locker room?

Don’t ignore Sherels. He’s been a big factor in this game too. Special teams star so far.

The answer to that first question is No. The defense has decided not to takle and the offense has decided 20 points is enough. Not three in a row.

I think the Vikings need to sit McNabb and his multi-million dollar contract on the bench for the rest of the season and let Ponder or Webb take over. What more do we have to lose at this point. We have lost to the Lions in OUR stadium and our 2nd half woes are still there. We cannot and should not let a team ever get back in the game when we have a 20 point lead. Yes we tied them after they went ahead for the first time, but to go into over-time and let a long pass like the one Stafford completed to give Hanson the opportunity for the winning FG is inexcusable. Put in the scrubs and let them get the playing time because we have no pride or playoffs left of which we can hope to be part. I hate the fact that we picked up McNabb because Shanahan proved last year that he was a horrible QB who couldn’t finish games.

WOW even my good friend Titus is calling it quits !

Remember the 1991 Twins and Braves. Both teams went from last place to league champions in a single season.

Perhaps the Vikings will be able to do the same.

My first suggestion would be to get some Offensive Linemen, followed by defensive backs, and wide receivers.

McNabb had little over two seconds to throw all day – that is offensive line. BUT when he had the shots McNabb missed. Missed Anaboshudo (whatever, that 4th string WR we got from Chi) and short-hopped him on big second down, and then missed Berrian throwing the ball out of bounds and Berian FINALLY got separation and was wide open for game winner in regulation — HOW does throwing ball out of bounds help you there Donovan?

I’m not sure if I want to call out Berrian at this point. McNaab missed him wide open for a TD to seal the game. He has no accuracy thats why he doesn;t throw deep. Berrian is a deep threat for the most part, but if McNaab can’t get him the ball he’s useless.

Someone mentioned “soft middle” earlier…. Lions O coordinator picked up what is wrong with our team – NO safeties and our LBs strength is against the run – CANT cover the pass. Henderson was awful against the pass. Greenway has no sense in space, loses receivers… they don’t have the instinct, they drift into coverage without a clue… THAT is how you go from 50 total yards in first half to almost 400 after regulation…. THEY figured us out, WE beat-off on sidelines and Harvin pukes up, AP is given early leave, and O-line decided they played hard enough already! DONE – COOKED! And our D is exposed for what they actually are!

    @Matthias,

The Vikings need OLinemen, not quarterbacks.

Chris Cook is better,…… Griffen is trash….he needs to be benched….. he needs 2 go……McNabb did goood why didn’t we give Peterson the ball more…..crazy stuff man

Gotta give it the Vikes. Has ever a team in history blown huge leads three in a row?
    Always a diehard Vikings fan

    @The Real Don,

Berrian is not the only problem. He was open several times today.

    OUR COACHING STAFF BLOOOOOOOOOOOOWS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  278. By Mike B on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

I will have to agree it’s time to part ways with B Berrian and bring that CFLer off the practice squad.

A few questions to the defensive coaching staff, would you personally put 1 person on Adrian Peterson if your team was against him? Anybody can answer that due to each play 5+ people are staring at him, then why put 1 person on Calvin Johnson Jr? Sheeeeesh

After all.. we see what happens when only 1 person is looking at AP, he goes all day.

Sh** up ! B.B is always a problem, even being on the sideline. He should be cut! waist of WR spot…

  281. By Viking-ology on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

The Vikings were in field goal range after the punt just before regulation-then they decided to forward lateral to put an end to regulation, and any last hopes of winning the game.

I THINK ITS SAFE TO SAY THAT CHRIS COOK IS OUR BEST PURE CB…AM I RIGHT?!?!

  283. By Lisa on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

Not sure why, week after week, we all keep believing in you and that you care about winning a game as much as we do. Why do you throw it all away and what are you doing at half-time? Maybe you should stay on the field to keep your heads in the game’

That long pass was all on McNabb not Berrian. I am assuming he would catch it if it wasn’t too long.

I can see a big billboard poster of Childress face like the one of Gorge .W saying “Miss me yet”.

    @Nova,

Who are you talking to man?

  287. By Mike B on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

Cook is our best tall CB to use against a blue chip receiver. I would not say he is among the best in the NFL though.

  288. By Frederick Jones on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

    @Mike B.,

Certainly we should have gone with another QB in the second half???

  289. By Joe on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

Thought I’d add, I’ll never give up on the vikings been my team since I was 14, would NOT feel right wearing another jersey, but at the same time it would be nice to get to wear it for once on a Monday morning in school, showing some pride.

Guys we are the front runner for the Luck sweepstakes! I’m worried that we might accidentally win next week though… but after that we are assured all losses. 0-16 or 1-15 that will get us Luck, and a good O line men and see you in the super bowl next year

I can see it now Mike Wobschall will write about what the team did good at, especially in the first half but will refuse to write about how bad the team is doing and start digging to find out what Frazier plans on doing to fix this team. Also Monday Morning Mail Bag will only consist of probably good comments instead of the bad comments that will be going his way to find out what is going on with the Vikings. Mike Wobschall only takes positive feedback and not the negative feedback. Work both sides of writing Mike.

lol McSnubb No I don’t think so. Players like to play for Fraizer as he is one of them. But it’s obvious they are dropping the ball. The top head must roll and he is it. The owner must step in and say ok we tried it isn’t working.

Nothing is wrong with the defense. What do you expect? No defense can last if they are on the field for almost an entire half. The defense starts to suck in the second half because the offense because unable to perform.

The major problem is the offense deciding to suck int he second half.

Frederick Jones, you are TOO right. We need a line. Loadholt should be named Load-inmypants… HOW does 360 lb tackled get pushed around like a chess piece? Charlie Johnsons makes me wish we had “Lay-z-boy” McKinnie back, and I HATED that lazy booger. McNabb is playing with thought to run to save himself almost every play, to the point he is playing under pressure about 80% of game…. Offensive line BLOWS like Monica L!

Anybody who thinks the only option out of this is to fire a coach is sadly mistaken. All that does is just open up holes in everyones chemistry with one another, give the coaches time, they are NOT going to ignore this. It takes time especially with all the changes they have done to the team. Keep Frazier etc.. just be patient.

we should rest peterson for the rest of this season start gerhart rudolph and ponder. let ponder develop at least we could go into game knowing its only for entertainment and not a playoff position at least for this year.

  322. By Mike B on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

We were able to throw the ball but only to intermediate routes. Can’t be stuck in a run first offense. That’s old school thinking NFL is a passing game now. Team needs to score and score a bunch. 4 of the first half of the day games had scores over 20 points. All them had over 20 combined points.

    @TheRealDon,

Often when an a s s i s t a n t coach follows a disciplinarian type or an unpopular Head Coach….the team will play well for a short time….later they will get undisciplined, take advantage, and begin to lose.

That may be happening with the Vikings right now.

Or he is the second coming of Bud Grant.

Actually trading Peterson for an OLineman and a Cornerback would be a great idea, right about now. Provided they are great players of course ! ! !

  334. By vlad19 on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

We can’t throw because FIRST, our line blows, poor feet, not very agile and slow as mud.

WR aren’t NFL caliber. Berrian is a loser, always has been. He has been washed up… er, never was actually. Always highly touted, always underwhelms – what does that tell you? CUT HIM TODAY.

After Berrian, Michael Jenkins looks like Jerry Rice… and Jenkins is a #3 guy. Who else does McNabb have to throw to? Shiancoe is so overrated its not funny. Guy doesn’t know how to close on a pass, drifts instead of going to the ball. If Harvin isn;t in, we have NO hope of threatening the field, no one who can stretch the field. McNabb is throwing to a Pee-Wee football assemblage of talent…

Bring in Greg Calarillo???????? HA! SUCK!

  335. By Joe on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

@TheRealDon Yeah I agree we have been talking about it, but unless we would be picking up a great head coach like Sean Payton for example, kicking another head coach wouldn’t be the best answer in my opinion, yet again everybody has their own opinions.

  336. By seattleviking on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

i believe the patience side needs to be eliminated. expectations were held to high in the offseason for this team. we all need to just realize it IS IN FACT a rebuilding year. no sense in letting our star running back lose health to falter this year. does no good for our future and or his.

  337. By Viking-ology on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

Yes, I agree Frazier should not be fired at this point-but if he does not put Ponder in at this point then he will lose his job at the end of the year.

  339. By Joe on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

@SeattleViking I’m sorry, I just can not see how that will benefit this season, he would lose experience and chemistry from his O Line, if what you are saying would happen, chemistry you would be surprised goes a LONG way, losing that would be devastating and just open up more dull wounds. Not to mention a huge waste of money!

lol people hate on the coaches. look at the first half. Our defense played well.AP played well. Harvin played well. Who didnt play well? who threw the ball into the ground? who threw the ball 8 feet over our WR’s head?

mcnabb is the problem. he is straight trash and there is no reason to keep him in. We dont win more than 4 games with him,

At least with ponder we can see what our future could be. And if he sucks. we will know what position AGAIN we need in the next draft.

With new Quarterback I meant either Webb or Ponder, but I don’t want them to get over run … You are right. We need some O-Line first… Tom Brady is able to drink a cup of tea before he throws the ball. Still McNabb is kind of inaccurate…

@joe it wouldnt be just letting the whole season slip away. our young members of the team would be allowed highly valuable playing time that would be highly beneficial to the organiztion. i think ponder and gerhart could easily lead the team to 4-5 victories late in the season but they need time to develop so they can carry it into next year

  361. By Viking-ology on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

SeattleViking- This does not necessarily have to become a rebuilding year. Remember what Brady did from the point he came in. The Vikings need to make a move to change the dreadful path they are on.

In the second half our O-line is not working at all in second half they stop working together!Im not all together pleased on how the defence gets going right off, then they relaxed then we just loss any kind of energy at the end when there on field all second half in the end but feel like it could had been better if we kept up on no scoring right off at 3rd half beginning, the second half really is the teams falt and couching so everybody is fired today ! but im still a viking fan always will be! p.s AP is a machine work him!

  366. By vlad19 on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

Offensive lineman make great QBs….. it is fact. yes McNabb missed some BIG plays, one could have won the game; but let us remember he managed a very clean and good first half…. But with an O line that is as ineffective as a balsa wood dam, McNabb is moving and running and throwing with people in his grill inside of 3 seconds…………. the NFL minimum O-lines shhoot for is 3.5. I will wager they didn’t give him 3.5 plus seconds but maybe 5-6 times ALL game.

Then a QB needs receivers he KNOWS can go get the ball, guy who KNOWS how to get separation, good routes and leverage, good hand-fighting…. THESE are the guys that get open and get the ball. Berrian, Amoshodu, Peterson is NOT a good receiver out of the backfield, Kleinsasser is about as agile and crisp as road-kill.

Please, after Harvin and Jenkins a little bit, WHOM does McNabb have to throw to, and given 2.7 seconds on top of it.

The bad miss to Berrian on that last drive was ALL on McNabb, but 30 some throws the guy was running for his life about 25 of them!

One problem is conditioning. Most of these players fall apart by third quarter because a lot of them did not do much because of the lockout. Last week, I remember seeing a close-up of McNabb after he ran for about 10 yards– he was huffing and puffing. Come on! Paid millions and what do these guys do in the offseason? You can tell which players train hard year-round. McNabb and all these players should be running half marathons and lifting weights all off season.

Mr Man…..please go listen to some “Wham” records.

  379. By Titus on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

The other problem, a major one that is growing exponentially now, is mental conditioning. Many of the players are now subconsciously beaten and the only way out of that is a win.

  380. By NovaScotiaVike on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

    Titus….conditioning is the coaches’ responsibility.

They have the best 100 million dollar running back in all of football, why do they seem to think they don’t have to use him in the second half. Dumbest play was 4th down and going for it with garehart??????? give the ball to adrian. or just kick the sure thing field goal.

Why of all people do you try to throw to berrian in a crucial down??? the guy can’t anything and is a waste of a roster spot. This is not a 4 quater football team, if guys want to think they can give it all in the first half and take a half off, you’re good as dead in this league, I really question the ability of our defensive coordinator to make proper adjustments and defend a lead.

  382. By Shawn on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

I think McNabb might be the problem … he just cant hit a moving target, too high too low behind

McNabb is what Philly fans said he was …

A couple wins in a row and this team can get going. I am really concerned about McNabb– the tendencies he displayed today I have seen for his 13 years– I saw plenty of his playoff games and games against Dallas to know this is his MO.

It is getting way too stressful to watch the game anymore. You think you can sit back and relax with a 20-0 lead (you should be able to do that), but we still lose – 3 weeks in a row!!! The penalties really kill us, but I agree that McNabb had a lot of inaccuracies, when he did have time to throw – its a hard call – McNabb has the experience, but has been pretty ineffective – Ponder definiely has promise, but not enough real-time NFL experience ,so I don’t think he is the answer. I think Webb is our best bet. He has some pro game experience, and is unpredictable to defenses – any feedback would be appreciated from you guys – I just want to figure out how we can win some games here!!

  403. By purplerainman on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

Absolutely fed up with McNabb and this offense in the second half. Unbelievable! You’re telling me we could only put up 3 flipping points after the first half we had today? What a joke. Defense – you have to know that they are going to pass the ball after half time. You know they are not going to pound that ball down 20 points. You have to know they are going to test the match-up with Cook and that he is going to need safety help on Johnson. You have to know the they are going to push the middle with your corners 15 yards back and your Mic Backer 5 yards off the ball. McNabb has the accuracy of a 3 year old. He’s got guys wide open in the flat and he’s throwing 5-10 yards behind them? What gives? And the penalties – runs some drills in practice. Tell your guys before they go out on a punt / return that could win the game – NO PENALTIES – I had a lot of faith in Frazier but it really seems as though this team lack the discipline. Cut your losses with McNabb and start Ponder against KC.

I’m not sure its Frazier as much as it is McNabb. I think Frazier has a great attitude and approach. I wish these guys would want to play for him. I think McNabb’s complacency and denial is the root of the problem. You take a coach like Frazier who beelives in you, gives you chance and you throw like a pop warner back-up. Drop McNabb, put Ponder at the helm, let Ponder win at KC and carry you from there. Cam is playing, Gabbert is playing its Ponder’s time.

Does anyone think that the biggest problem is with our offensive line? Seriously, McNabb had very little time to throw – same story last year with Favre. But I still think, that the few times McNabb did have time, he was not making accurate throw. The one to Harvin, low, Rudolph great catch, bad throw – that stuff needs to be worked out in practice – this is the NFL – you need someone to throw strikes whenever given the opportunity in the NFL.

    —————-

they’d be too small up front… you need bigger lineman than robison and williams and everson griffen and them… and JaredAllen would probably have to stand up

  441. By vikings4seven on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

one name on my mind BILL COWHER. We need a coach with FIRE. Someone who has won and the players respect and look up to. Someone who will light these cordinators up and end the terrible play calling. It’s fundamental football. You get a lead and you give the ball to the best back in the league and run the clock down. A team with 4 TE’s and the best back in football and we can’t conrol the game with effective blocking and run offense to protect a lead.

@tarvaris tarkenton..well since this is a rebuilding season and all i think we should start rebuilding to be a 3-4 d

This guy McNoodle is not an SB caliber QB. Start working on your future – start warming up Ponder in the bullpen. Reid, Shanahan and even Campbell’s Chunky dropped this guy. Read between the meat and vegetables gentlemen.

This will not happen, but if the team cares about its fans and about this club they will start Ponder next week and the next week after that and so on. Mc babb is the number 1 problem of this offense right now! Play Ponder against KC and we will have our first win.
Everybody that owns a Ponder jersey should wear it for the next home game, and everybody have to chant Ponder Ponder during the whole game!!!

For Frazier’s presser….. embarrassing !!!!! He lives in La La Land !!!

I think any QB of Donovan’s stature that loses 3 consecutive games should be benched period. Then players know your not F@*&ing around as a coach.

  449. By purplerainman on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

Leslie here’s a few pointers: 1. Make a statement! Play Ponder! 2. Do take advice from AP to go for it on fourth down and then hand it off to Gerhart regardless of who tells you its a good idea.

Why the F didn’t we do more of the same? A lot of good stuff in the first half. Pass protection is awful, this is known. So what do we do, try and pass it all third quarter. Typical coaches thinking too much. “They won’t see it coming!”

  457. By purplerainman on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

This may look strange but a defense is at a disadvantage going into half time with a big lead – because the team behind is looking to air it out non-stop and they usually can if you are playing them soft off the line off scrimmage like we do. We shouldn’t put up 20 points in the first half if we do not anticipate scoring in the second half. We are better off keeping the score close until the end.

To answer the question who played good on D besides Allen was chris Cook.

  462. By vlad19 on Sep 25, 2011 | Reply

All this McNabb bashing is easy blogging – feels good saying it. But any of you who played any ball, and especially at QB position KNOWS the effectiveness of a QB is directly related to the effectiveness of a O-line…. ours is HORRIBLE: Herrera was pushed around like a shopping cart — Charlie Johnson is cheating the edge and STILL gets beat on speed rush — Sullivan can’t pick up stunts, he is triple-teaming the tackle while the end rolls underneath him — Loadholt is getting bull-rushed and whipped by any and all who he matches up with — Hutch had a decent game and far from enough to help McNabb out…

McNabb was bad DIRECTLY because the line was pure bad! He had 2 seconds to throw – and the occasions they gave him adequate time, he is already playing too fast because he doesn’t trust they will keep the pocket intact. His “clock” is mistakenly short because he believes he is going to get clipped…. then throw accurately! Try it all of you who preach about knowing so much about how bad McNabb is.

Fraizer was crazy not running Peterson on the 4rth and 1. Mcnabb was all over the place. Ponder needs a shot to steer this team into a second half drive of more then 2 min. They go from looking like superbowl champs in the first half to the Gophers in the second in all three games.A true champion will find a way to hold that kind of lead. Mcscabb was benched last year for not being a good two min Quarterback and now he just cant even get a couple first downs in the second half. Wilfs please give us Viking faithfull a look at our future? Allen and the defense deserve much better then they got today.

Mcnabb keeps throwing at the turf when the ol protects, rodgers ol doesn’t protect him either, but I m sure he can drill 11st down if he finds someone open, take away percy big play and AP big play mcnabb didnt contribute at all

Madden NFL 11 the vikes are ranked 76 overall. IM always the vikes. never anyone else I still have a record of 112 and 81. Try to beat that with a 76 ranked team. I cant throw the ball deep but just get the first downs by calling the right play to keep the ball. It doesnt have to be exciting you just have to get the first down. Alot of players change teams to get wins online. look for me TMFJONES , yes the MF stands for exactly what you think T mother bleepin JONES.

What kind of #1 receiver has one catch in three games, Jenkins should be #1 in my eyes. There are to many things to list as to why were 0-3. It all comes back to coaching no matter what. You pull players who cant perform. decision making and play calling.Their not making any. Their running this thing straight into the ground. What in the world?

Jared Allen has played more than solid and are lucky to have him.

All viking fans seem to be wanting the same thing,a future. McNabb is not the future, hes not even the present. I noticed as a fan watching from home that on 4th and 1 their defence was stacked to the right with more players on that side, Why no audible and run the ball left. Giving Gerhart the ball was a good idea. No audible to run the ball to where less players are thats the mistake. that left edge was wide open. a smart QB would have caught that. McNabb is not a smart QB Hes just an athlete,Like Moss was an athlete not a true football player. I dont want a team of athletes i want football players. Football players win superbowls. Who would you rather have at WR Heinz Ward or Randy Moss. One is a football player, one is an athlete. Why do you think the pats got rid of Moss?
