Asher Allen “Should” Be Back Sunday; Sanford Will Start At Safety

Posted by Mike Wobschall on September 14, 2011 – 11:04 am

The Vikings secondary help Chargers QB Philip Rivers below his career marks in yards per attempt and passer rating last week in the season opener. They’ll look to do the same thing to Tampa Bay’s Josh Freeman this week in the home opener, and a little extra help should be available in that quest.

Asher Allen, an important component in the team’s nickel defense as well as on special teams, was limited in practice all week leading up to the Chargers game and then he didn’t play on Sunday. Allen is dealing with a foot injury, but Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier said the CB “should” be able to play this weekend, assuming everything goes according to plan in practice over the next 3-4 days.

“I think he will,” Frazier said when asked if Allen will make it back to the field for Sunday. “We’ve got to see how he does in practice. But from everything I was told leading up to today’s practice, we should have him for this game on Sunday.”

Frazier said the Vikings came out of last weekend’s game pretty healthy and he doesn’t expect at this point that anyone will miss Sunday’s game with Tampa Bay.

Jamarca Sanford will get his second straight start at safety, but Frazier said Tyrell Johnson will rotate in, just as he did last week. Frazier was also asked about the QB depth chart and he said it will remain the same, with Christian Ponder listed as the backup and Webb listed as the #3.

Who cares if Ash Allen come back were talking about a guy who can’t tackle and can’t even cover a bed I wonder why they list him ahead of Marcus Sherrels we need to cut him. And if our coach keeps rotating our safeties why didn’t they just sign a sure starter when they were available like Whitner or Mays were just one confused team something tells me were about go have a repeat of last year I hope not.

I have to say the Defense is looking good and creative. Allen’s Interception vs Rivers was very cool. What? That wasn’t Asher? How many Ints does he have?

so what ! they still are average to bad at best in the whole secondary.

Need some new DBs man Rodgers and Cutler gone tear us up. Sherels is better than Asher. Leslie don’t have to much confidence in the team and let it be to late to make a run. If we want to compete the time is now. Make a trade or do something. Being in the playoffs are better than watching them. This is my opinion we gave AP the long term contract. I say trade Gerhart because, Booker can play 3rd down. Trade him for a good DB.

Asher is decent on kick coverage…. Im ok with him on special teams, but not in the game at corner. He just lets too many guys get a step on him. Also, I think Griffin and Winfield looked fine. The problem was too many mid yardage gives up. The Vikes were so afraid of the bomb they opened up the 5-15 yard game and it came up to bite us.

We were ranked #32 week one based on QB protection. That says a lot. With better protection, we sustain more drives and keep Rivers on the bench. Our defense wore down, even with rotating guys and some of those guys late in the game jumped on Rivers hard count. I think this team will get better but it better start pretty soon. All the other 3 in the division won their games.

Asher Allen helps our secondary as gasoline helps a forest fire.

  21. By Twoodsnvikes on Sep 14, 2011 | Reply

Brandon Burton is better than our entire secondary (Winfield excluded) as far as I’m concerned, he’s the first one who could actually catch a ball that hit his hands. Start the rookies in the secondary, it can only be an improvement

  22. By Twoodsnvikes on Sep 14, 2011 | Reply

So you know how they have a “hands team” typically for receiving onside kicks? Well does a “no-hands team” do anything for us? If so, A. Allen, T. Johnson, J. Sanford, and B. Berrian would have that really solidified for us.

  23. By Spencer on Sep 14, 2011 | Reply

Chris Cook is good people. In the pre-season he gave up a total of 3 catches. When hes healthy hes really good. Hes the best cover corner on the team.

  24. By Twoodsnvikes on Sep 14, 2011 | Reply

I have hope for Cook, good size corner he just needs some experience and to stay healthy and hopefully he’ll be good

  25. By Bill on Sep 14, 2011 | Reply

I agree with Spencer. Cook looked great against the Chargers too. I think I remember he made one mistake, but his overall performance in San Diego looked a lot better than I would have expected from him in his first real game since his rookie injury, and MUCH better than we’ve ever seen out of Asher.

WIth that, I don’t have a clue why Wobschall is describing Asher as “an important component in the team’s nickel defense”. IF he were playing the Nickel CB position he might be okay, but the VIkings prefer to move Winfield into thta slot in Nickel packages. That means that Allen would need to try to cover a #1 or #2 WR, which we all know he is incapable of. He doesn’t have the talent or instincts to keep up with these guys, and he doesn’t have the height to contend for the ball if he gets lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.

Long story short, I think Asher Allen would be considered an important factor to our Dime defense, at the absolute best. I’d still rather see Sherels in at that spot though. He appears to have so much more promise to him.

  26. By RunRunPassPunt on Sep 14, 2011 | Reply

My question is, how many times do our corners (Winfield excluded) have to get burnt before we finally decide to give Marcus Sherels a chance to play corner rather than just return punts? Can anyone honestly say that they feel that Marcus would be a step down from Asher and company? (Again, Winfield excluded)

  27. By Parody on Sep 14, 2011 | Reply

How many times did they get burned last week? The worst thing that happened to our DBs is that they got burned on short plays. That had nothing to do with their abilities. It was all directly attributable to the playcalling.

There was the one play where Rivers rolled out and convinced the coverage to focus on him instead of remaining in coverage, allowing for a TD, but that was a mistake by E.J. and Greenway dropping out on their zones.

Maybe our pass coverage isn’t great, but it didn’t look bad last week. Let’s hold onto those complaints until they have merit.

  28. By Zeke on Sep 14, 2011 | Reply

I agree with Parody. Our defense did play well. I mean let’s face it… what we did on offence on Sunday.. we would have been blown out had it not been for our defense. Look at time of possession, our D played most of the game! They did well to keep the score where it was, they kept us in that game.

  29. By SMH on Sep 14, 2011 | Reply

Asher may be the fastest corner we have, but he can’t cover. All last year he got burnt deep. Plus, Sanford can’t take a good pursuit angle even if a line was right in front of him leading him where to go. And even if he does get there he can’t tackle.

Our coaching staff is confused they keep signing linebackers and D ends when we have starters in good backups for them positions they need to realize we need another safety some offensive linemens and let one of our other receivers start over berrien either that or we’ll be in line for a top five draft pick

    Dear Mike Wobschall,

Would you mind doing all of us fans a very HUGE favor by telling (This isn’t a question) coach Frasier to start throwing our rookies particularly Brandon Burton and Marcus Sherels into the fire/starting lineup as we can’t go anywhere, but up from here!

Last I checked its the ballhawks (Which we don’t currently have in the starting lineup excluding Winfield and Jared Allen) in the secondary that makes the difference along with the D-Line pressure of course that makes the difference in winning games!

  49. By Derik on Sep 15, 2011 | Reply

When Kevin Williams comes back they have to cut someone correct? That person should be Asher Allen. That’s how important I think he is to this defense. I think bother Sherels and Burton are better than him. I actually don’t mind our corners how they are.. just not a fan of our strong safeties.

  50. By Hawaii Vike on Sep 15, 2011 | Reply

Asher Allen is small, slow, and doesn’t tackle well. The tape shows it all. Why do the Vikings pray for guys like this to maybe become better when there is nothing objective to indicate they will be better? Lastly, the days of using a running back to win games are over. The Vikings are trying to buck the trend and they will surely pay for it. All the good that our defense can potentially produce will all go for naught because our offense cannot score enough points. It’s the QBs that win games. Just look at who won this past week if you have any doubts. It is going to be a looooooooooooooooooooooooong season just to prove that focusing on a run game does not win games anymore. Goodbye Vikings, the writing is on the wall and your season is done if your coaches do not change their plans.

Hawaii Vike…. the VIkings season was done before it began. The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem, and they haven’t taken that step yet. When you think that fellas like Loadholt and Herrerra and Sullivan are strong players, you have a problem. When you think that our DBs have the closing speed and mentality to play a cover 2 zone successfully, you have a problem. When you are hanging your hopes on Asher Allen to help this defense, you are delusional. At this point (and before game 1, actually), I don’t see any way the Vikes don’t take 4th in division.

The way this team is headed, I’d expect them to pass on Andrew Luck next year (assuming that they are the worst team in football…)

LMAO! I’m glad the vikings have no clue what they’re doing with their secondary. Expect me to get 10 TD’s against you guys. Vikings this year will be 5-11. If they want Andrew Luck they should keep losing.

I know this is early, but don’t you guys think that we need a change at DC? I know that Pagac is just running Fraziers scheme, but Fraziers scheme doesn’t work. It hasn’t since he’s been here.

Frazier is a step up over Childress, there isn’t a doubt about that. That doesn’t mean he’s a good coach or is infallible. I’d like to see them take a look at their players and try to put them in position to be successful, not stand in their zone like a bunch of 3rd grade basketball players… immobile with their hands up, staring blankly at the ball as it is passed into their midst.

Its true about the running game.Look at the winning teams the last few years.Even in “09” the Vikes became a pass first team. How about setting up the run with the pass?Force the defense to back up and then hand it to A.P.
A team that relies on the run too much becomes predictable.

Yeah, send out 4 wideouts and leave the pass protection to our O-Line… they are awesome.

If you don’t have pass protection/ run blocking, you don’t have an offense. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, starts with the big fellas. If you have to keep some TEs in to bolster the line, then you have no choice. THe Vikings have made sure that this offense will flounder by not addressing the blatant need of an improved O-Line. We Are Done.

  60. By Robbnar on Sep 16, 2011 | Reply

Our defense actually performed pretty well for being on the field 2/3rds of the game! Our offense needs to do a better job of staying on the field so our defense is rested enough to get opposing offenses off it. I know I’m taking a sledgehammer to a dead horse, but 39yds passing is unacceptable in a professional football game. If we can eek out a victory this week, I am looking forward to next weeks game when we get Kevin Williams back on the field to stop these runs…
