Vikings Tweak Roster

Posted by Mike Wobschall on September 13, 2011 – 9:07 am

The Vikings have made a few changes to the roster over the past day or so. Here are the changes…

– C Joe Berger was signed to the active roster and C Jon Cooper was waived to make room for Berger.

– DL Cedric McKinley was signed to the practice squad. The Vikings had a spot open on the practice squad after activating TE Allen Reisner on Saturday.

Mike Wobs- maybe you can help me understand this move. We cut Ryan Cook in favor of Jon Cooper. Miami cuts Berger to make room for Cook. We cut Cooper for Berger.

Do you have any insight you can share with us about this move?

Seth Olsen was signed by the Colts and they cut Jamey Richards to make room for him.

Does this mean the Vikings will be signing Jamey Richards?

Why not move mcnabb to backup or even third string Jo webb did so much more last season. In fact you have the best runner in the league give the ball to him not a washed up no good qb.

Cut the negativity on McNabb. Watch him have a break out game against the Bucs– then what will you say? Oh, McNabb is great, he knows how to win, he is a proven veteran, blah, blah, blah. Then what if AP fumbles twice in a game and we lose because of turnovers— everyone crying all off season to cement his contract will say, traded him. Guys, have some stability in your thought life. Do NOT be moved by every whim and change– what a way to live. Things in the physical world are constantly changing– be above being dictated by every little movement like a paper cup blowing in the wind.

I will self-edit– trade*, not traded in sentence three.

People need to quit this “go with Webb” stuff. Look at the body of work McNabb has put in over the years. Check his career stats. Webb will never even remotely come close to any of his numbers. For some reason people are blind to how good McNabb is and what he has accomplished during his career. You people must watch the TO show. With Webb as a starter we’d be lucky to win 3 games all year. Just because he had one good game against Philly last year everyone thinks he’s our savior. He doesn’t have the passing ability McNabb has period. Hey James, we do have the best runner in the league. Obviously that didn’t equal a win in week 1. You have to be able to pass in this league today to win, which Webb can’t do. I’d like someone to point out these wonderful things. Love Webb as back up, but not an NFL starter at this time.

I really like Joe Webb as well, but I think it’s a bit early to bench McNaab. It was the first game with a new offensive system, new coordinator, new quarterback, and a shortened off season. I realize every team had the shortened off season but most teams haven’t made as significant changes as the Vikes. As the season progresses, the team should as well. The real question is how many losses should it take? In my opinion, if we drop week 3, then it’s Webb time. Have to beat the Lions at RCS (Roof Collapse Stadium.)

And about the tags on the right, why not just get rid of the entire tag section. It is obsolete. People will just have to use a different path to find out about Chilly, FaRve (on purpose), Bevell, etc. If something really needs to be there, how about cheerleaders in swimsuits, links to funny cat videos, or an 8-bit packer shooting game. Just some ideas.

I really still believe we will do well this season. I like most of our fans was very dissapointed with the flashback play calling from last season….run, run, throw, punt. I really dont understand why we play so scared. We hav a different OC and still calling same type of plays? I thought that is why we made a change. I feel we will play better, we played a good team and had a very good chance of winning if we would had just opened up of offense in 2nd half and made changes. With allthis said i really wished we would not have sign Mcnabb. I just prepared myself all off season to go with Ponder or webb and start a mid size rebuilding project. That way we could have kept some of the young promising WRs we cut. We could had cut vets or traded vets like Hutch and berrian and winfield. Sure we would have maybe finish last but we would had been building chemistry and there is no sure thing that we will not finish last this season anyway. I think we will be good but i just rather have started the transition this yr so that the next we are further along rather than bring in a vet like we did with farve. Our superbowl chance slipped by use in 99 and 09. we will not make superbowl this season ..so why try to make 1 last run and then rebuild next season. AP and Greenway would still have sign extensionsno matter who we had at QB, so we would still have a foundation. I dont care how well Mcnabb does or does’nt do this yr ..i’ve never really been impressed with him or his game. He ihas been solid throughout carrer…solid or good but not great, at least with Farve he was a great vet we brought in. All in all i think we will do good this yr. Im a Vike fan no matter what.

Carl K. You are right about the center position. I don’t understand it eigher. We cut Ryan a versatle lineman. When he played center he was always pushing someone around. We dumped him to keep Cooper who was undersized and didn’t do anything but backup Sullivan. Last year when he had the opportunity he didn’t do that very weill either. When I wastched the game Sunday, which was very little, I watched Sullivan do nothing but push air around.

Please Vikings, stop wasting Gerhart’s talents! Now that we signed AP please trade Gerhart. He is not a 3rd down back as you tried to make him without success last season. He will not gett hardly any carries this season unless AP goes down hurt and we are not expecting AP to miss games as evident from his huge contract. Gerhart needs the ball 20-25 times a game to be very effective. He is a power back that is very hard to tackle and wears down defense with punishing runs. He will not break long runs but can average over 4ypc carry and score from goaline. There are teams that would trade for him. He has potential to be really good if giving the oppy. He will not get that with playing behind AP who is the best back without doubt. I dont understand why draft a RB so high in draft (2nd round) just so he can get 3 carries a game? He has value, so please trade it will be good for us and great for him, so he can get some playing time. We will be fine with AP and Booker

How many Super Bowls has McLoser won over his many years in the NFL?
None!! So why bring him in to teach Ponder and Webb how to lose? Dump McLoser, bring Brett back to coach Ponder and Webb. We picked up Ponder because he is a great young quarterback who is our future to winning a Super Bowl. Isn’t that what this is all about? So get rid of McLoser and lets get going. Keep Webb as back up,he will be great too.

I was really surprised by the lack of production from our TE position. Historically, the chargers let TE’s have pretty good games. I know Shainco had the one pass at his feet, but that was about it.. we’ve heard all off-season about how Musgrave was going to make use of Shanc and Rudolph and it really didn’t seem like we even bothered to try.

To me, this could have led to a lot more third down conversions. Have to say I was pretty disappointed.

We will beat the BUCs. We will play well at home. Look for AP to have monster day! Also do not expect the same play calling. I like Frazier alot and think he will make sure to let Musgrave know that last week cannot happen again. Another reason it will not happen again is because Mcnabb wont let it. Like i said before i really dont like MCnabbs game much but he is soild Qb and a VET! He will will make check offs if he feels the play called is to predictable . Remember we started off the same way with Farve until Farve said F this! Then he started making check offs and audibles and starting airing it out. The offense did so well that the coaches just let it conyinue even though old chilly tried to control it a lil.

@ VegasVike, i disagreewith you when you say that Mcnabb can’t control a game like Farve did. Farve never controled a game. Farve would just go out there and play lol He was so sure thathe could make any throw no matter how tight a window he had, He would just go out and flat out play. He checked out plays to call plays he liked cause he knew he could get the ball where it needed to be but keep in mind he called alot of bad plays and bad throws. He is all time leader in INTS. So i dont think he controlled a game he just went out an had fun and if he made a mistake it was like oh well, i’ll get us 6 pts on the next drive. Mcnabb looked reaaly bad last week. I know it is only the 1st game but wow..he looked bad. I never liked him as a QB because he is so laid back. He struts out there with his hsort stocky arms like he is joe cools and then after he makes mistake he trouts off the same way. The line was not blocking at all. he had no time to throw but show some emotion man!!! Get on the linemen. The great QBS like brady , peyton get on their players when they do not preform. Even Kolb from Cards was in his linemen face after a sack and he just starting out with a new time and has’nt done anything in his carrer

McNabb has the best TD to interception ratio…the man takes care of the ball unlike Favre. I’ve always like McNabb, he’s a winner. And I can’t remember the last time he lost in the metrodome so maybe that’s a good thing.

Mcnabb wanted so badly to change the stereo type of all black qbs being running QBs who cant be pocket passers. So…he just stopped running long time ago. He will sit in pocket and take a sack or throw it away rather than run just because he didnt want to be labeled a running QB. He never really been a great pocket passer anyway. But if we block the rest of season like we did last week , then he better start running and not just for 1st down but for his life! He can run well as was seen in a 1st down run last week. Use all your gifts Mcnabb

I didn’t like those wildcat plays with Joe Webb in there. If you’re gonna have Joe Webb in, think of something better than just a QB draw. They could do a lot of neat stuff wth Webb in there to confuse the defense.

When you only get 43 plays or so a game, its pretty hard to open up the play book. Yes I think the game was called conservativly, but thats on Musgrave, not Mcnabb. I have faith in our coaches that they will figure it out and the team will play better this Sun. Rivers is a top QB. Sometimes the ra ra attitude some of you speak of isn’t the best approach. I know it wouldn’t work for me. If the Viks convert a few third downs and knock out the dumb penalties, its a different game and the Viks probably win, and you are not all being negitive as always.

  68. By VegasVike on Sep 13, 2011 | Reply

Oh I know Favre made a lot of bad decisions thru the years. He was the ultimate risk taker. I’d rather see someone at the helm of the Viking ship take those chances win or lose than just lay down and die. I know they don’t always turn out like the 09 49ers game but they’re much more interesting to watch!

Whatever McNabb is getting paid, it’s too much. Let’s hope they don’t waste the year waiting for him to be the great QB he never was to begin with. Please Coach Frazier, Mr. Wilf …………….Give him ONE MORE GAME , only, and if he does not straighten up & win a game with a respectable performance—–put him on the bench to eat his chunky soup. The Defense & AP kept the Vikes in the game, but he left the D on the field all second half to run into the ground. Don’t delay or you can kiss this season bye-bye. Oh, and the fans above are right about run , run, pass. What’s up with that? One more shot for the ex-Eagle. Then really “move forward” with youthful Webb or Ponder. I’ll bet they can beat 39 yards, in a series.

Ahhhhhh post game meloncholy ……. isn’t it nice to be back with off with their heads? Really,I think this game was lost for a couple of reasons. 1. conditioning. First game of the season with limited off season, the D just got gased. 2. Lack of timing. Lack of timing between McNabb and the receivers had a lot to do with it, but the Vikes also had a hard time getting open. I was a little disturbed at how predictable the play book became, but then again, that was the first time McNabb and Shanco were in game action together. Give it a week or two and see if things start to jell. 3. Bad tackeling. IDK if it was the time change, the weather, or just nerves, but we gotta make those tackles.

I watched the game on Sunday and I was diisappointed with the OC play calling. That is ppart of the problem. I do not care if it is 1 game or 20 if a professional QB throws for 39 yards there is something definately wrong. I, as many of the viking bloggers here can sum it up for the vikings’ coaches. The OL stinks, the receivers are BELOW average and when they are open they cannot catch. But still a professional QB should be embarassed to throw for 39 yards in 4 quarters. I do not think the problems will go away in one week either. Again I will hold my breath. I will watch the scoreboard since I decided not to purchase NFL Sunday ticket because of the great showing on Sunday. Go vikings.

Folks: Mc Nabb is a LEADER! He works hard, he takes hits and bounces back. Would you feel any better if he’d thrown for 350 yards, and we fumbled 4 times and lost by 7. How about Cam Newton’s stat line, best debut in the history of the N.F.L. for a quarterback. “Oh by the way, he’s 0-1 as well.”

I am tired of hearing about momentum and chemistry from people who likely never studied physics or chemistry. .

ok where all disapointed and only want the best for our Vikings. Lets remember all new coaches and systems and many new players and quarterbck with a short pre season. We have some great players and 2 really good young quarterbacks. With a hard division lets see how much better we are in a few games. If we get to the middle of the season and problems lets put in Ponder and the young guys on the O line and young recievers and get a start on next year. With a nother good draft next year we can be a very good team for the up coming years.

One other thing the defence was really preaty good for being on the field as much as it was the second half.
