Vikings Drop Opener In San Diego 24-17

Posted by Ryan Cardinal on September 11, 2011 – 5:18 pm

The game could not have started off better for the Vikings as Percy Harvin took the opening kickoff back 103 yards to put the Vikings in front.  However, the Vikings offense failed to get going all day long, and the defense wore down during the second half and the Chargers were able to pull out a 24-17 victory.

MN Vik-Queens go to LA, Yes keep them who are unable to play, MN Vik- Queens record 0-16. I am tired of hearing, we played good but did not get the win; Good game but we are losers! Go to LA and get your new stadium, Like the Twinkies you are L-o-s-e-r-s! I see that your MC l-o-s-e-r and b-u-t-t-e-r finger B did their very worst! What a team of re-ject Coaches, or should I say c-o-c-k-r-o-a-c-h-e-s? Yes give them 10 yards to get the ball! I say fire the entire team and let the fans come in and play! They could not do any worse

Oh but don’t worry I know what you diehard’s are going to say. “They had good coverage, they had pressure on him.” Well if would have looked off the safties like a good QB would have well than maybe.

What a disappointment! The D played hard, but could we make an adjustment and at least try to take away the underneath stuff? That’s all the Chargers did all day. Offensively, what a waste. Two runs for 5 yards, then a pass with pressure from everywhere, then punt. Where is the play action? It would have been nice to see some aggresiveness. The one time they do get a first down in the second half, they then decide to bring Joe Webb in for not only one, but two plays that looked like busts. Looks like a long, long year.

When Detroit is pounding Tampa at home. You know this division is going to be tough. We look like the ugly ducklings. It’s funny – it’s almost like every team has a secret manual in how to make the Vikes look like a joke. Sometimes they use it, sometimes they don’t. All that talent and no offense. Makes me want to puk3.

So do we just not have confidence that McNabb can complete a pass or what? We can say McNabb was bad, and he was, but the offensive play calling needs to diversify quite a bit. That was more constricted than when T-Jack was our QB. Open it up Musgrave!!!!

Vikings played good today…especially defensively. McNabb’s interception at the very beginning was the nail in the coffin in my opinion. We had all that momentum from Percy’s TD and from the 3 and out…and then McNabb went and killed it. One strike for McNabb…two more and he better be out.

I think this loss may be a blessing in disguise. I know I feel dumb just typing this but here me out. It shows that we do NOT need to blitz every fla drippin down and it also shows that our Oline still needs a LOT of work. Ofcourse WE the fans already knew this but now Frasier can now show the players just how bad they played. Oh and I would rather a loss against an AFC team over an NFC team. *The Bucs are in a worse position than we are. My ONLY plus.

I really hope Frasier has a long talk with our team. He needs to get rid of all lazyness in the Oline. I liked what I saw of our receivers both blocking and running routes but McScabb had no time to throw. Plus he made some bad decisions and I just wish Musgrave would’ve thrown the ball just one time on second down. Or how about on first down?

The defensive scheme was great in the first half – you could clearly see that Rivers was shaken. The objective should have been racking up as many points as you can the first half and not wiggle kneeing it into halftime with 2:00 left. Even New England respects Rivers as a competitor and you should get when the getting is good. e.g. McNabb’s line of scrimmage pass after the Harvin TD run. That was Oober Creative there Billy Mustard. Oh and let’s not overlook the 2 Joe Webb down’s in “Blazier Package” after an Allen INT and a decent Peterson gain in the second half. Can anyone in Qualcomm stadium say “Run Play”? Looks like someone needs to go back to Coordinator 101. Thumbs Down.

Same old sorry ass vikings. Terrible linebacker play. A secondary that could not cover a $5 dollar tab, no defensive adjustments to cover a TE. 39 yards passing in a pro football game. WOW, this team has some serious issues. Percy and Adrian will be destroyed by week 4. I have never watched a more pathetic 2nd half of football in my life. D-line played tough all game. Our secondary is a fantasy football wet dream. It’s going to be a miserable season.

I see lot’s on McNabb, the offensive line, etc., but nothing about Berrian. Can ‘we’ catch the ball? It could have been placed any better, maybe there was a reason Chicago let him go to begin with and why again were we pinning our hopes on him?

  56. By Peggie on Sep 11, 2011 | Reply

OK, well I have been a Vikings fan for a long time but that was just S-A-D. I agree that McNabb is no great shakes (he was ruined by the Eagles a long time ago trying to make him a pocket quarterback –what a waste) but you have to admit that the offensive line looked absolutely terrible. No one can get a pass off with that little time. We need to either draft better offensive line players or COACH the ones we have better. And of course there is always the pass defense. For the last decade we have had pretty good run defense, but the pass defense SUCKS. Again we need to draft some players or COACH the ones we have better.

If this is what we are going to be subjected to all season, it’s going to be tough!

Bucs are always competting for a wild card spott. I still think the Lions are going to fail. I don’t see them contending. I know they just man-handled the Bucs but this is only week 1 guys. There was a lock out, and players are just getting used to the playbook. Hopefully, what we saw today was a fluke. Cause I still think the Bears and Lions will NOT make the playoffs. I don’t know where that leaves us. But hopefully we can get the wild card spot at worst.

Unbelieveable. Bring ponder in now!!! If we are going to throw away the season on has been McNabb then I’d rather see someone who cares about the team run it. Not giving up on this team, never will, but some of the leaders are rediculous terrible starting with the head coach. Make the right decisions. Waive Mcnever, get an imagainative offensive coordinator, and rally the team you slob. AP worked his butt off with a huce target on his chest all day. 5 for 14 for 39 yards really???? Is this Pop Warner or the NFL?

  64. By coloradovikes on Sep 11, 2011 | Reply

All you guys want to dump on Mcnabb right away.. Its not his fault.. The inept playcalling and lack of creativity from the Musgrave needs to be addressed, however the bigger problem is both the queens lines. Offensive line cant block for mcnabb for more than 3 seconds while rivers had all day with no pressure from the queens d line. Even when they tried blitzing which was all day rivers had the time mcnabb did not

  65. By chris on Sep 11, 2011 | Reply

at 8 rushes AP had over 70+ yard there was no reason for the OC to force the offense to rush every 1&2nd down thats the only reason why the offense line was so tired in the second half. OC get you S*it straighten out your playin with real people not madden 11

I don’t blame McNabber Jammer. It was Musgrave’s fault and a real man would admit it – which I hope he does. That was terrible play calling. He called single check downs and screens where the offensive line would roll right and Harvin would roll left. Where’s Percy and Cam in the slot? Where’s the couple deep shots to Berrian? The 10-15’s to Jenkins? Where’s the Shaincoe Mid routes and Rudolph on the roll-outs? It really seemed like Billy had tunnel vision today. You gotta put on the mayo and spread the musgrave. yeah buddy.

I appreciate the effort of the positive thinking fans who want to give this team more time to come together and get things right. First game my A$$. This has always been the way this team goes about business. We all knew the secondary sucked. We all knew we have a dinosaur QB again. We all knew we have no talent at Wide reciever. (percy excluded). We all knew the signs of what this team was and now it is another year of the same undisciplined, inconsistent, underdog mentallity. Time to man up guys and earn your millions.

  78. By chris on Sep 11, 2011 | Reply

the only reason the Offensive line suck in the second half is because the OC tired them out with all the 1st and 2nd down rushes, by third down the line was tired and couldn’t block, and get some depth on the o line if your planning on running every down.

It’s called audible Mcnabb. If the playcallings bad change the play. I never was a fan of Mcnabb cause I never was a fan of the Eagles. I want him to succeed. But, I want the Ponder era to start. I was extremely excited when the Vikings finally drafted a QB and now they bench him. Now to your point @Matt I know we played a #1 defense but quite frankly, we couldn’t have played any worse. We play tough defenses every year in the Pack and Bears. Having a veteran QB who supposibly is in the best shape of his life who wants to revive his career play worse than a rookie in my opinon (overated) QB is just unacceptable! I know our Oline and Coordinator did poorly but someone has got to step up on offence and no one did and therefor I am going to blame the QB for not making plays and not leading the team. And I’m jealous that Carolina might have found (again I still think he’s overated) their franchise QB and our QBOTF is sitting on the sidelines watching this B.U.M.

  84. By CA_Viking_fan on Sep 11, 2011 | Reply

Out of curiosity, I checked out a couple Chargers forums just to see what their fans are saying. Overall, they were all pretty much relived they didn’t have an AP repeat and were making fun of McNabb. I always wondered how it feels to be a fan of a winning team. All I know is disappointment and let downs and downright anger. My wife keeps asking why I am a Vikings fan. I can’t give a good answer. There must be something wrong with me.

  85. By AlbinoSnowman on Sep 11, 2011 | Reply

Man, as disappointed as I am in our team I’m even more disappointed in my fellow fans. Yeah, we refused to play offense, but I never believed my Viking brethren were such fairweather fans. I read less than ten comments and three said they give up on the team…after the first game? Yikes.

And btw, I’m sorry for McNabb because he will definitely be blamed for the poor offensive stats. He showed control, he moved the ball, he followed the game plan. Shame on a lot of you guys.

I’ve think McNabb is a average quarteback who had great players around him. Now other than A.P. and Harvin he’s got average players around him. It doesn’t help when there’s no halftime adjustments, and the play calling on both sides of the ball are bad.

That interception was a great play by the defensive end, so I don’t credit McNabb for the int. Also, let’s not forget that we did just play the San Diego Chargers. Going into the game I was expecting a much uglier out come, so as a silver lining let’s see that there is definitely room for significant progress.

I wouldn’t worry about McNabb. It will all be over soon for him. Like I said when they signed him, the OL will find a way to end his career, just like Favre. And from the looks of things today, I’d say they are right on schedule. Coaches and Offensive system is all new too, so unless you have talent in every position (and this team has cast-offs and rejects every where you turn), I wouldn’t get my hopes up any time soon.

As a lifelong Viking fan (since 1969) and a lifelong Philadelphia area resident I have to pose this question. Why would Andy Reid TRADE McNabb to a division rival if McNabb could come back to hurt the Eagles? There is only one answer. He knew McNabb was done. Stick a fork in him. He’s been done for four or five years at this point (if you base it on his perennially erratic throwing and overall play, coupled with his inability to read defenses). Shanahan proved that last year by starting him. And the Vikings traded to get him? WTF? Put in Joe Webb. Run the friggin’ ball – 3 yards and a cloud of dust. Put your defense in a position to keep you in games and maybe we can win a few. Don’t rely on McNabb.

wow these fans are rediculous. So many fair weather fans, that is honestly more embarassing then the team losing. ITS ONE GAME people relax. really. no offseason and limited preseason play for many first teamers, they may need a couple games to gel. and stop ripping on AP. 2 weeks ago everyone complained cause he wasnt resigned and locked down. now he is and people complain wah wah wah he didnt have a huge game. 2 yards short of 100, and over 6 yard/carry avg not bad at all. the passing game is what needed improvement but really, calm down. I dont even see how many of you can call yourselves fans. I am embarrassed to know that so many Viking fans will give up so easily. Its one thing if youre disappointed your team lost, I am too, we all are, but some of these comments are way out of order. you people need to learn what it means to be a fan. telling them to move to LA because they lost one game is not being a fan. complaining that we paid AP for nothing when you were complaining about the opposite all summer, and when he stil had a decent game, is not being a fan. Seriously grow up, support your team, accept the fact that not every game is going to work out perfectly, and root for them next week.

  129. By Mike B. on Sep 11, 2011 | Reply

@AlbinoSnowman yeah what about our defense we pretty much stuffed the run with a few exceptions. the openings we had in our secondary were bad. had the chargers almost 3 and out and Rivers finds a WR in the open for a First down. Cook had 2 interference penalties and was unable to keep up at times with defenders. There were bright spots, but not enough. I am not giving up but we just looked bad especially the second half. The OLine needs to be reworked nothing for McNabb to work with. I am not sure that the Receivers really had much of a chance since the OL was so spotty. Fair weather no way objective and eyes wide open yes.

@ Mike B I was impressed with Chris Cook. All off season I was ripping on him like no other. I loved how aggressive he played with the bigger and faster receivers Floyd and Jackson. Yeah he had two penalties, but those happen. Cook showed a lot of superstar caliber talent when he was able to locate the ball and with how well he stayed with WR’s. Notice that they weren’t able to take advantage of our young secondary for deep routes virtually at all.

and @CPZ, I really agree with you here.

  142. By John on Sep 11, 2011 | Reply

Seriously disappointing game results today. You could see this loss developing early in the 2nd half, yet the offensive play calling pattern did not change. You can’t make a player’s talent change in the middle of a Half, or the middle of a career. Viking’s coaching needs new QB skills and talents on the field.

New blood is always good for the players by encouraging a “sense of urgency”. D. McNabb doesn’t have that sense of urgency. He is complacent and is not driven to make results. He has no “fire in the belly”. That is what Favre and Tarkenton and the great QB’s always had/have. They are driven to win.

Right now! Fans want answers! Fans want wins! Fans want success now! And we don’t care how that happens. BUT WE WANT IT RIGHT NOW!

I liked our Defense today also especially without big Kevin. All and all – if you take away that fluke INT at the start of the game we gave up 14 point to Rivers. I’ll take that any day against him. That dude is a flipping competitor man. I wish we had a QB like him.

  149. By GB & McNabb Supporter on Sep 11, 2011 | Reply

The MN Viking is lucky to have McNabb as their QB. They lost tonight because of the bad play calls. Come on, if you keep calling the same running plays over and over again, how do you expect your QB to gain any passing yards. Even when McNabb was given the chance to throw the ball, the offensive line couldn’t even protect him long enough to give him time to throw. What happen to the defense? They cracked, and there’s no excuses for causing 3 penalties in a role to end the game. If the defense did what they were suppose to, they could have given McNabb a chance to at least tie the game. McNabb is a good pressure player if given the chance. At the end, the Chargers played better. They were able to read the Viking’s predictable (run) plays. So for all of you haters out there, chill out!!!! There’s a reason why McNabb is playing, and you’re on your butts watching.

I will not blame McNabb on this loss it stand right were Fred Pointed out the OL and the Def Secondary. Also I think our Offensive play calling is too conservative. Is that on the OC or HC? AP your still the man and the O-line did great blocking for running game. Berrian as I have said before should be off this F*&#)*G TEAM! Sure the ball was underthrown but it hit you in the Chest! Your a worthless receiver! Bring Jaymar back, he can run straight down the field also and “STRETCH” the defense. He’d probably catch the ball though. Second off, Frazier show some EMOTION! The Second Guion jumps offsides the first time YANK him out of the game. Then tell Berrian and Guion they have to find a new ride home back to Minnesota because you guys dont have jobs anymore. Musgrave! How many times did Peterson get the ball the second half? I remember watching Peterson getting 5 yrds a pop and then you quit giving him the ball on 3rd and 3? You beat a team by kicking the S*&t out of them and thats what Peterson does. I dont care if we pass the ball ever again, either run it with Harvin or Peterson. Besides it is not the first time they have been called the Queens. Look back in time and you shall see the truth! I will hope they will be more then what they are and win! Hope is running thin I do tell you my man.

Anybody see how Atlanta was crushed by the bears, Well thats the same inept scheme that was just installed at the Vikings, But worse , we got there reject coaches that wouldn,t know pro talent if it fell on them. Dog and pony show for the fans. one great player on offence and one on defence, just enouph to give the fans false hope and to keep coming back for more heartache. What a scam. If i lived in Minni, i would boycott the vikes until the Wilfs got serious about paying for real coaching staff that knows what talent is needed to build a Dynasty Franchise like New England. Until then you are all crazy to continue to pay to be tortured by this dog and pony show. I know, becuase i am one of those crazy fans for 39 years, and they have gotten worse not better. The O line and Secoundary must be entirely replaced over the next 3 years and draft a real prototype QB. Then AP will have a real shot at a super Bowl ring Before his contract is up and he has lost his speed. Otherwise save your money and support a winning franchise and follow them on tv and the net. This is the only sane solution to a failure of a franchise. Heck there own state doesnt think they are worthy of a real pro stadium. They are a joke from top to bottom.

Our defense did what cover 2 defense is supposed to do. Rivers is not used to throwing screens and small routes. I’m sure he wasn’t happy that he had to do that for 4 quarters. You’re talking about a QB that can throw 350-450 yards a game. The Defense did decent. Tolbert would not have been a threat today with big KW in the game I promise.

Mike – You have every right to vent your frustration, that is normal. I am referring to the many many comments on here (sorry I cant keep up with who wrote each one) that are telling the team to move, saying how horrible they knew we would be, saying that they are done being viking fans, etc. Those are completely rediculous.

and DRS, when you decide to root for a team and become a fan, you should inherintly (sp) give that team your total respect. That is part of being a fan. If you dont think every team goes out every sunday intending to win then you are insane. Of course they don’t always execute the way they should, or make the right decisions, and things dont always work out. Welcome to life. That doesn’t mean you call your own team queens and tell them to move. If you already think theyre going 0-16, why even turn on the TV on sundays? really, what is the point? why even spend your time being a “fan” as you call yourself?

I know I have suffered through 4 super bowl losses and countless division championship losses and still LOVE THE VIKINGS. 1 loss does not make a season. Now this game was not lost by Mcnabb if you watched the entire game like me you saw the same play calling that has been the problem for years and the defense that did not make adjustment to a live game. We saw a line that did not not block and receiver that could not get open or catch when they were. Leave Mcnabb and AP alone they will get it together and all the band wagon jumper are not welcome when we are division champs GO VIKE ALL THE WAY

It seems like the Vikings wanted to play ball control with the running game, but SD was geared up for the run all day. I don’t understand why we didn’t open it up in the passing game. McNabb looked out of sorts the whole day, and Berrian is too soft. The Joe Webb plays looked like a (just get him in a couple plays). I thought the D played well enough, but they were clearly winded in the 4th quarter becaause of our inept offense. I hope Frazier is willing to pull a non-effective player like he seems to be willing to do. It’s only one game, but there are corrections to be made for sure.

Dont blame it on Berrian and Mcnabb because its NOT their fault. if your gonna trash the vikings 1 your not a true fan and 2 you should probably go to a site called and then rip on us. I think this team is 3-4 years away from being what Frazier wants it to be. The down side is that Viking fans have no patience at this point. The Packers knew they were 2-3 years out with Rogers. They had the patience and worked the draft in the meantime. I honestly think we should do the same with Ponder. Allow him to get a feel for the system. McNibbles would be an awesome back-up in the meantime.

don’t worry vikings fans, next year we can probably get kerry collins and in 3-4 years peyton manning and keep patching the most important spot on the field, play ponder for gods sake, mcnabb was cut in philly, washington, and did a really good job of almost 40 yards in the 2nd half, hey ziggy i will make you a bet, let me coach the team for 3 games you pick the 3, best 2 out of 3 wins, i win i get the team, you win and i will hang my self, the coaching was a joke, chargers adjusted to our defense and scored, we tried to fool them with lets see “run” I have 3 words for you Ziggy, “pit tee full”

So yes we are getting tired of f-a-i-t-h and want to see action! How many years did you all say keep the f-a-i-t-h with T-Jack and by the way the Seahawks lost big time as well.

It’s only one game. I saw enough good things and a dominate performance in the first half to hope the vikings coaches grow up and learn to adjust to game situations.

Even though you have AP, you don’t just run run pass. Trickery is a big part of an NFL football game. Someone should tell musgrave it’s ok to pass on first down more often and it’s vital to take a few shots down the field to open up the D. Also, don’t just try to run the clock out with 2 minutes left in the first half. Why not score again. Very conservative play calling (makes a fan sick). keep the momentum going.

Still have faith. I think the vikes will turn it around.

  220. By purplerainman on Sep 11, 2011 | Reply

AP needs a decent passing game to offset the run game. I always respected how Bevell worked both in. Quite Frankly – I think it was a poor decision to let Bevel go. But anyway. If McNabb get find a way to get the ball in the air. This is going to be a long voyage for the Vikes.

I have been a die hard fan for 48 years and would never consider changing and pulling for another team, no matter how bad things got. Cannot believe all the negativity out there about todays outcome. The game was tied with 10 minutes left in the game. The team we played on the road had a lot of experience and continuity going for it which is very important this year when coming out of the chute due to the lock-out. I commented to my son, that I was interested at halftime to see how we handled our halftime adjustments for the second half and I think that is where the game may have been lost, in that they made good adjustments and we did not. Thrilled that AP is going to be with us long term, now lets get him involved 25 times a game. The Webb plays at that time of the game were puzzling? The inexperience on the defensive line was exposed in the second half, need to get Williams back. I thought our tight ends were going to be part of the offensive scheme this year but seemed to be missing in action. It is a long season, this is going to be a work in progress, keep the faith, we are going to be fine.

Can the Vikes at least try to open up the playbook a little. I knew what the Vikings were going to do b4 they snapped it so imagine what the Chargers were thinking! try passing the ball the ball down the fricking field! Hey defense how about covering the receivers in the middle! The Chargers were stacking the box which leaves man to man on the outside and all we get is 39 yards passing? We had a four man team today, AP,ALLEN,ROBINSON and GREENWAY. If the Vikes play like this the rest of the season the people will not help pay for a new stadium.I will always be a Vikings fan no matter what tho! I hope they learn from this game! P.S. Hey DRS if you want to jump ship please do, we dont need fans like you! Name calling, especially your own team is juvenile.

Anyone notice that Frazier doesn’t call time outs. Why not? Bellchick, Peyton, Tomlin – all use time outs. Give your D a break – that’s what they’re for. Reset your offense – re-evaluate your playbook. Fraizer, you should call a minimum of one time-out per quarter from now on. I’m not Singletary or anything but take my advice buddy.

TO THE COACHING STAFF: If that Offensive Line will not do there job FIRE THEM!!! and as for McNabb, well it takes two for a reception. And way back when, when I was in school. Coaches taught us if you can touch the ball YOU CAN CATCH THE BALL. I dont know how many were thrown to Mr. Berrian. Except for one, the one that bounced off his board hands. I am old and so out of shape, but I would have atleast got in the way of opposing defenders to block them (OL). OH, and I know effing well I would have caught that pass directed for Mr. Berrian. @DFish – I have been typing that throughout this post. Rivers is a competitor. Some QB would’ve laid down after the first half. I guarantee he knew he was going to win the game. That’s why when should have through the book at them the first half. When we rubber legged it with 2:00 left in the first half I knew we were in trouble. Because I knew they were going to play in the 2nd. I think a great coach would’ve known that. We’ll just see if Leslie learns from it. I think he will.

I saw improvement over last season in special teams. I don’t fault McNabb even on the pick. Sometimes you have to accept that a player made a remarkable play. Just as Jared Allen did intercepting Rivers. Our O-line is a little better, but it is still tough to get enough time to hit our deep receivers and stretch the field. I felt we were pretty predictable in the second half. The runningback of the Chargers had a decent game, but he’s a great example to kids of how to act classless every chance you get. He’s no where near the player or person of an Adrian Peterson. I was suprised he didn’t get flagged for excessive celebration. Stay faithful fans, it wouldn’t be so disappointing if we weren’t in a position to get our first win. Edwards did zilch for Atlanta.

Same-old-same-old Vikings on offense. Predicable and lethargic. One quarter and done. It gets harder and harder to maintain being a fan of a team that gives so little towards acquiring real players/talent. Always seem to find mediocre talent and expect top quality play. Get rid of the Tampa two defense, it’s played out along with the wildcat. This is a joke and every team knows that we are going to use these plays every game and that’s why they do not have to prepare very much for this team. Unless there is a dramatic change in the offensive play calling this season is going to end in disaster. More passing is required to soften up the defense so AP can run wild. Above all please teach the offensive line how to block blitzes. My goodness they always collapse under pressure.

I just wanted to say that McNabb and the offensive was ok, but I knew they could have been better. I also know that McNabb got a bad deal in DC, but he is here, and since he knows Frasier from the Eagles, he will improve and with the offense who needs to improve and not having enough time to to practice with the lockout. So be happy we have football this season. You know you could be watching baseball or hockey soon. This is just the first game, it takes for a team who has never practiced before to work together to become a team a good team.

Where were Shank and Rudolph today? We should have pounded these guys today with the big bodies we have. We should’ve kept pushing Gerhart too. He’s a Standford guy – he has a lot to play for out there. Not sure why we completely melted the second half – maybe they were surprised to be up by 10. Weird.

McKinnie did his job protecting Flacco and practically manhandled James Harrison all game long, and TJack was kiiiiiinda decent, going 17 of 29 for 177 yards, 2 tds and a pick in the ‘Hawks loss to the 49ers. Mcnabb played terribly, but really the O-line has GOT to step it up. I don’t care if its Mcnabb, Ponder, Webb or freakin Tom Brady back there, the O-line looks like its made out of paper mache. And the defensive linemen should just wear earplugs and watch the ball, cuz clearly they struggle with this “don’t go until the ball is snapped” thing.

Why are the Vikings a nursing home for aging quarterbacks? Every single old quarterback we get ends up doing ” The Walk of Shame”.. Look at m McMahon, Brad Johnson and Favre.. They had agonizing last years in the Vikes Organization.. I hate to stay it but after game ONE we already have a quarterback controversy.. McNabb OUT, Joe Webb IN..

Really McNabb ???? After a Vikings punt return for a touch down the first play of your Vikings career is a Freakin interception at our 5 yard line??? Really?? You really think that 32 Yards passing THE ENTIRE GAME is a winning recipe?? Really McNabb??!! He should have stayed in Washington.. Of course Washington WON pretty good today without Mr McNabb ..

Jared Allen was a beast, but needs more support on the line. The O-line did an okay, but not great job. A.P. played with the effort we’ve come to expect from him. I’m not sure why Harvin was back to return each kickoff, he seemed to do a pretty good job. Antoine was great. Cook had some good plays, and had a few moments that show their is need for further growth. We need to work on tackling and going after the ball more like what the Bears did today. Kluwe was consistently putting the Chargers back inside the 20. We have to get the D off the field on 3rd down. I’m not a coach, but the Chargers looked like they had better speed on the defensive side of the ball.

One thing to remember in this loss: The Chargers have had thier core team (and staff) for a long time, the Vikings have a whole new coaching staff and quite a few new players as well, and, although we did lose the game, it was still a very competitive game. I believe Frazier will constantly make adjustments necessary to improve the team.

Only six more days of shame. I’m a fan but I see this team going 4-12. No good coach would have allowed some of those plays to be called the second half. The fact that Leslie let it happen indicates a long and painful season for Vikings fans in my mind. I used to always say “at least there’s Detroit for 2 wins”. I can’t even say that anymore.

Cam Newton aired it out for 422 passing yards today. Not saying Ponder would’ve done the same, but Cam’s performance does make a case for just throwing the rookie out there and seeing what happens. After all, wasn’t Ponder supposed to be the most pro-ready qb in the 2011 draft?

For McNabb doubters, when the pocket was collapsing around him, he scrambled out and ran for positive yardage. Jenkins made some good catches over the middle. Some mis-tackling at the point of attack led to big gains for the Bolts.

The Vikes defense looked great but was to conservative and let so many long draws go. they need to get off the field on 3rd down . our run defense was great. we need to pass more and not go run run pass. sometimes we should switch it up and go deep or actually have a passing attack instead of 36 yards. i like all of the play calls and the idea of webb but we need to pass more if we want to run that much so its not blatantly obvious that we are gonna run

How can people be so embarrassed by a 7 point road loss? It’s not like the Chargers were 1-15 last season. I felt we were in a great position to get a win today. If Tom Brady were under center today, he’d have been sacked 8 times. Our Qb’s still need a little more time. The “Blazer” was too predictable on a QB draw. A roll out pass, or an option play with Harvin, Peterson, or Booker would have been more innovative. But, that special package takes time from practicing other parts of the offense.

Alright fellas, that’s enough venting. Let’s now look forward positvely. As bad as the Vikes were today, I can’t see this caching staff not making any playcalling adjustments for next week. I’m betting McNabb bounces back at home against Tampa Bay, with much better protection and playcalling. Look for the defense to improve, with hopefully more blitzes and better coverage. Come on fellas, its just one game. The Vikings now know what doesn’t work. The Childress Era is over. This current administration learns from its mistakes.

It doesn’t really matter who we want to blame this loss on. The play calling was horrible and McNabb didn’t do us any favors. Berrian can’t catch and he hasn’t been a factor for the Vikings since he got on the team. Percy wasn’t even given a chance this game. AP did well but it’s not going to be enough when the passing game is an absolute mess. I’ve been a Vikings fan since I first touched a football and i think i can speak for all of us true Viking’s fans that we cannot take a season like last season. Okay, hereeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee we go again. The opposing team practically gives us the game at halftime, and we still cannot win! It’s the Nordic curse for sure. 40 yards passing? Is this the pop warner league? The starting QBs across the league must be bursting out with laughter and this pathetic display of offense, let alone a defense that crumbled at the second half. Nothing is going to save this team for this year. It is over. It’s one thing when you duke it out and come out short in the end. But to have a star like Percy Harvin run 103 yards for a touchdown on the FIRST PLAY of an away game, and to be leading by 10 points at the half, and score zero in the second half and throw for 40 yards has got to be the most pathetic display of team work in the entire NFL. I’m a life long fan, but shame on you Vikings. You have no pride. You are done for the season. Nothing is going to save you now. There is only one word for that game: SHAMEFUL.

But even the charger fans agree that we have a great D (yes we can cover big guys like gates) and our O seemed to be terrible most of the night. First I cried, but if you think of it, there is areason why the chargers were ranked so high last year (superbowl caliber). All in all we have to set up a passing game and have to avoid that manny penalties (nearly 100 yards). Greetings from Germany.

Even in McNabb’s bad year in Washington…he still averaged 260 yards a game. So take it easy…it’s the 1st game of the year against a top defense. Next we face the Bucs, the Lions, the Chiefs, and the Cardinals. None of them will be as tough to deal with as the Chargers. I mean wow at some of you…disappointing to call you people fans. It’s week 1

I still believe that the vikings can reach the playoffs. They just need some conditioning training and a better chemistry on offense. Never thought that I would say this, but our d-backs looked decent, especially Winfield and Cook…

Just to introduce myself, I am from Germany and visited Minnesota in 09. I was an exchange student back then, but I became an instant fan of the vikings. Unfortunately I left America 2 days before we played against the saints. I lost confidence and boycotted the season in 2010. Now I am back to watch some football and hopefully the team learned something through this incident and can bounce back to smash the pack. Go vikings

Okay so I read a lot of the comments on here and wanted to tell you guys my perspective, I was relieved to pull out with a win after the first half, rivers was mostly out of sync the entire first half. The Vikings looked good defensively, the reason we kept going under in our passing routes is because the Vikings secondary was doing really good deep coverage. The vikings brought good pressure too which caused rivers to have to dump it off early multiple times. The problem is that Phillip rivers is just too good overall, he makes good d fences look foolish more often then not…so don’t rip your d… Two interceptions and 2 sacks and a lot of hurries and knockdowns. The problem was your offense, it was too predictable and also Greg manusky, the chargers new defensive coordinator specialty is stopping the run. I don’t think mcnabb is anything special but he never had a chance with the play calling, no rhythm and passing on 3rd and long mostly… AP is probably the best rb in the game currently but there is only so much one guy can do when everyone knows your getting the ball, if Minnesota makes him take to hard of a pounding then he will look like Betty white running with her purse on crutches by the end of the season…

We have time and we do have a good team. Yes Mc Nabb had a very bad game but that will not be the case next week, trust me he plays to win and if u have seen him in the past a loss ignites him lets give the team atleast 3 games then pass jusgement.

How can you have so many top notch players and just let games slip away? I’m tired of excuses and lame post game press conferences crying about we could have done this or we can learn from this and that!! How about some results for god sake!My heart bleeds every time we lose a game and I’m sick of it! I’m not spending another dime on anything associated with this team or investing anymore emotions in an organization that just isn’t hungry enough to perform to best level!!!! Yes everybody is already complaining about the results of the first game and I can understand. Before the season even started I had no expectations with what this team was going to do. It looks like it won’t be a whole lot. The problems we had going into the season showed up yesterday. Two things really stood out to me yesterday. One how horrible can a passing game be. I don’t care if the chargers had 4 All Pro DB’s, there is no excuse not to be able to come up with more then 50 yards passing. And of course how many games have we lost in the 4th quarter. I don’t care how much our defense was on the field the second half. THEY JUST DON’T MAKE PLAYS WHEN IT COUNTS. We will struggle this week against Tampa and wouldn’t surprise me if you see the same end result as the Charger game.

Leslie shoulda asked for one more year out of Favre. Ponder could have learned something behind him. He will only learn what not to do behind McNabb!

Last year was the negative perfect storm, for Brett and the Vikings, only bringing in McNabb could continue this storm.

I have been to the games since 1967. Seen bad games like this before. Remember Snead at QB. He wasn’t the answer, neither is McNabb. You drafted Ponder, see if he can play. Need to get vertical on offense. I wish for a REAL quarterback again, someone who can take charge and call his own plays. Playing not to lose doesn’t work. Offensive coordinators are over rated. Get us a REAL Quarterback, please.

I love this team no matter what and even though we lost 4 SB’s I will die with tons of very fond memories that this team has giving me and many many names I will never forget.
If <<< IF our season continues like this, I look at the positive side of it, number ONE pick overall baby. I sure hope we don't see an 6-10 season or 8-8, those wins are useless, its either win enough to make a playoff run or go 0-16, once you know your going to have a losing season, it's all about the draft, will thats how I feel about it anyways.

All you 1 game and I am done fans, please leave, we only want true fans that will hang in there thru the tough times. From bad game calling to a few offense blunders we should’ve had this game. Poor direction in the second half which lead to 0 offense. A few mistakes, (McNabb interception, Berrian’s dropped pass, using our wild cat, non-usage of our tight ends and Jenkins in the second half), results could have been different. With a couple of wins and this team could very well steam roll. Let’s all be better fans and support our Vikes thru thick and thin.

It’s been fifty-one years of thick and many many years of thin. These guys are supposed to be professionals. They deserve to catch fan wrath when they lose because they aren’t prepared. They aren’t even in shape yet. Winfield whiffed on Tolbert because that dude hurt him the first time he took him on. The arm out whiff tackle photo proves that. Cedric was beat bad by Floyd in the end zone with no help over the top. I see things before the tape gets played. EJ and Greenway let the running back get behind them for the winning score and Sanford slides over the top instead of sticking that left shoulder in front to stop him short of the goal line on the dive. If you really watch, you see.

Even though I’m a big McNabb fan, I will say he had a bad game. But the offensive coordinator Musgrave had a worse one. The play calling was terrible. At no time did he utilize the receivers in a pro manner. McNabb should have been in shotgun in the second half with 4 wide and wingin it. No QB can get in a rhythm with that kind of play calling. It was so predictable, like high school. This is the NFL, you can’t play call like an amatuer. You paid the QB a lot of money, let him deliver. Even the commentators, acknowledge that on the live broadcast in the second half. Jim mora, Jr. said that the vikings should open up the offense and start throwing down field. Musgrave, you can’t play to lose!

  409. By true vikings fan on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

The vikes played well for 2.5 quarters yesterday but then the defense lost focus, probably from being on the field to long thanks to the offense’s vanilla play calling, nonetheless a late hit penalty and 3 consecutive offsides in the clutch are inexcusable!!! Also Peterson didnt do to bad yesterday but he could of had some more big runs if the oline could of blocked longer, the same can be said for Mcnabb, he didnt have much time to pass when Musgrave actually decided to pass, and there is optimism for this season but we must correct our stupid mistakes

My childhood idol was Chuck Foreman and I loved to watch the passionate play of our past teams. I could never EVER root for another team plain and simple!!!! I just can’t get past the fact that we have some of the best players in the NFL and we still continue to perform less than average. A win yesterday could have sent a strong message to the league that were the real deal(McNabb should have played with that in mind). I want to see our team all over the highlights and want respect for our Vikes. After a loss I don’t even want to go to work I’m so sick and frustrated. Some of the Vikings players probably just do a balance inquiry on thier account balances to feel better.

Wow! A lot of haters after 1 game. People, we lost to a really good San Diego team by 7 points. A team that many ‘experts’ are picking to go to the Super Bowl, while most of those same people have picked the Vikings last in the North. Yes the outcome and lack of offense in the second half is disappointing but there were some things to get excited about. We could be Colts fans, oh wait they’ve won s Super Bowl, so that would be better, but…I think we will beat the Bucs next week and get K. Williams back soon after. The offense will get going. We weren’t expected to beat the Chargers, so to lose by 7, and almost win is encouraging I wouldn’t give up on this team yet. If you want to, go be Detroit Lion fans and jump on that bandwagon.

I’m writing to all of you Viking fans from San Diego. Thought I’d check out what was being said in Minn. Couldn’t believe what I saw. Of course, you can think what you want. Most of the thought here is that Chargers just got their ship righted after a bad 1st half. And, the better team won. But, there is one thing that I’m not sure if you folks know about. As good as AP is..He’snot very smart. At least twice before the game he publicly dissed the Chargers. Once on the Dan Patrick Show. And at least once or more on Twitter/Facebook. Saying he was gonna burn the Chargers for somewhere between 200 to 400 yards (depending on which statement he made). This became BIG Time locker-room fuel. At least one of our defensive players during a post-game interview made “heated” responses to it. Pointing out that, minus the one 46 yd run, AP only had 52 yds for the game.
Nothing to be bragging about. Especially for someone that was gonna run for 400.
Anyway, Just thought you should know…if that issue hadn’t already gotten out to your side of the country. I’m sure many of you have played some form of organized, HS, or College sports before…and know that the last thing any coach wants to hear is that one of his players is mouthing off and disrespecting the upcoming opponent before playing them. I think one of your coaches needs to take AP aside and clue him in on props before a game. Especially if could wake up somebody on the opposing side.

    Just Saying,

Let’s just put this in perspective shall we? We went to San Diego with a D with new personnel, an OL also with new personnel, newish coach, and a not a lot of time to prepare due to CBA taking so long. I’ve been behind the vikes for fourteen years now, bad years and good, 2009 with the first spell of Bret Farve! Frightened me to death! but for one INT in the Championship game, we may have got to another SB. I didn’t believe for one minute we were going to get that close with him! So let’s calm down a bit shall we? First a comment made by coloradovikes:- Rivers had all day and no pressure! Did you actually watch the first half? The throw to V. Jacks looked pressurised to me and so did many others. Second, i didn’t expect us to do as well as we did. A loss by 20-27 points, due to the fact they were the #1 D and OL, and that was without V. Jacks. Scores on the doors what matter and we nearly had the score! Let’s think on… The only way is UP!!!!!

Brian, yes 6 TDs in 1 half. Difficulties with McNabb over the years. Inconsistent play, every year is a “Learning Year” , lack of leadership ability, whether winning or losing, while on the sidelines, either sits/stands with a dumb blank look or jokes with others. Rarely seen studying photos. Time management, shared responsibility with Andy Reed and basic game knowledge, ie, the overtime rule game. also, many receptions should be credited to the receiving talent surrounding him, ankle breakers, behind he back, and 5 yard riffles could describe many of his throws. Go with Ponder and build the future. Don’t be like the Eagles Go KOLB.
    Good luck this season

Of course alot of that was due to the rest of the dl having no impact at all. Don’t get me wrong the vikes are still my boys, I know some of you 15 year or newer fans know what I’m about to say to be true, The secondary has always been the weakness of almost viking D in any year. Ever since Bud Grant left the offensive play calling has been a clone of the year before. Its like no one has any creativity at all to think up a play that every team in the NFL hasn’t already seen, I Mea the coaches faces chage but the same old lame ass plays just keep showing up. Here is the deal Viking fans. I live in NorCal but lived in SoCal for most of my life. Hence I am a Charger fan and hate the Raiders. You folks must realize that we have faced each other ten times and have a 50 50 split. We were at home and regardless what anyone says, Rivers will do what he has to do to win. To be honest, if you folks did watch the game there were at least three guys on Peterson all day long. Turner has never beat the Vikings, never. Statistics were going to work the Chargers way Sunday. Granted McNabb did not look that good but I was impressed by your defense. For those fans who think the Vikings are out of it have a little faith. Your team was facing a top flight West Coast AFC team. The thing is the Chargers never get the respect they deserve. I do agree that those two wildcat plays were really stupid plays considering that the Chargers held such a great back as Peterson to less than a hundred yards, finally. The only thing I was surprised was the three offsides calls against your D line by a hard count. They need to look at the ball and not anticipate the count. This is the only stupid thing I saw your team do all day. As for the Chargers, Rivers was not having a great day. Good thing I guess because if it were not for that TD kickoff return the Chargers would have won by 10 and not by 3. So in the end, as a West Coast Charger fan I did not see anything that would make me give up on the Vikings. Remember last year I nearly had a stroke seven games in a row last year with the Chargers with their special team play. The # 1 Offense and #2 Defense and we don’t make the playoffs? I did not give up on the Chargers then so don’t be so quick to count your team out. Just an outside observers view. The Vikings will be fine, cut them a little slack.

The wildcat, Really, Adrian Peterson is tearing it up and you run the wildcat. I understand trying to get harvin his touches but not at the expense of moving the ball. And McNabb, really, I mean really. I know we apparently like older quarterbacks, but wasn’t he brought here to open up the offense? Let him pass the ball.

  428. By PURPLEHAZE on Sep 14, 2011 | Reply

My thoughts exactly Steve S. TJack could stand in there and handoff twice then get swarmed by a blitz on 3rd and 7. McNabb has a great running game and is a proven winner. Let him throw it preferrably on first down now and then. Very conservative play calling. Puzzling? Been a vike fan for 42 years and I believe the vikings will be fine but this is a tough division. Not expecting a superbowl trip this year. One note on those who think Joe Webb should be playing. In his last 2 years at UAB he threw like 18 tds and 37 ints. He was a running qb there. He is not what the vikes need in there right now or ever.

I don’t think we will ever win a game if you play prevent defense when you should be playing man to man like you did all through the game. The offense is lousy, who taught them how to block, or should I say hold? Mc Nabb is just like Rush Limbaugh said he was, lousy and not a professional player.
