Why does this team continue to disappoint ? Do the Vikings have a curse on them?

how can a pro team only have 40 yards passing thought i was watching a high school team running the wishbone pittiful totally ugly

If Bernard Berrian does not perform over the first three games, do you have the courage to bench him and give one of the young receivers a shot like bringing up Manny Arceneaux or starting Aromoshodu?

im a die hard ride or die vikings fan. So it’s not the end of the world after this game. The good: the defense created some much needed turnovers, and harvin/peterson’s playmaking abilities. The bad: our pass defense still has a few loose ends to tighten. The ugly: Donovan McNabb total pass yds < city limits, 39<45. The good thing is it can't get worst than this

Do you think an NFL team can really win a game with just 15 pass attempts? That averages out to 3.75 pass attempts per quarter. Do you feel this creates a balanced offense?

  7. By JP on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

How can we say we are establishing the run when we only give Peterson 16 carries? why didnt we run any rb screens? And why didnt we take any shots down field? We should have at least tried to wear down their front seven by sheer volume of run plays when we were up by 10 points.

Why throw a swing pass to Harvin on the first play of the game…What happened to stretching the defence, I don’t think McNabb looked down field all day…Why in god’s name is there a pre-season if all that’s practised is so quickly discarded at game time…why use two tight ends [one of which missed the pre-season]and only throw the ball once in their direction…why use unsized Harvin as a WR instead of a slotback [he's mismatched everytime]…why play conservative with a 10 point lead at the end of the half knowing SD will get the ball to start the 2nd half…Who’s blocking for AP [looks like no one]…etc etc etc

unless i missed something why wasn’t the other “Monday Morning Mailbag” answered when we asked the coach ?’s..and i knew this come into the game with only a few plays would be bad..come on now open up the play book..run on 1st & 2nd for a equal of 5 yards wont do..i liked the play calling in preseason go back to that anything will be better at this point..and we all called it the safety play to me is just not up to speed..we need a change their..15atts hahaha crazy

We had too many tough losses last year. Do you think that The defense we faced will be the best regular season defense we face this year?

Does it not seem we could have used some other items during free agency.

What do you think of McKinney being the can opener for Ray Rice? He made more yards on their first play from scrimmage off tacckle, than McNabb made the entire day.

Do you think McNabb or Rothlessburger had a more miserable day? We looked better than the Steelers, right?

  13. By CA Norwegian on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

Ooops, I am talking premature to thinking… I think the Ray Rice run was in the 40 yard range, while MdNabb’s passing stats are less…

If the Vikings want to win the best put Ponder in!!!! McNabb is a joke!!!!!!! Biggest mistake Vikings could make was picking up the burnt out quaterback. If not Ponder heck go gets Favre to come out of retirement for the 5th or 6th time and let him play.

Berrian dropped a bad pass that could of kept a drive going.
whats the difference of throwing a 3 yard pass instead of handing it off to AP,well AP CAN EVENTUALLY BREAK ONE
BAD TIMING ON THE WILDCAT….IT STOPPED THE DRIVE
NO SCREEN PLAYS, AND IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE A WILDCAT , LETS TRY RUNNING TO THE OUTSIDE,GOD EVEN FAVRE THREW THE BALL DOWNFIELD

there are sooo many quality players on this team. Unfortuantely, you really need to give them a quarterback as well. I am disappointed that the staff didn’t aggressively go out and get someone. It’s needed……McNabb is a well liked quarterback, but this team is good and needs a top quarterback……

I need someone to explain how our new QB is better than Brett Favre. We need to go down and get him, if we want to win at all this year. That being said our WR’s must play better for any QB to have a chance- just get open.

Obviously, I was disappointed in McNabb’s performance, but was it just me or is our O-line terrible? It looked like McNabb was getting hit on every 3 step drop… And I look at AP having to break tackles 2 yards behind the line of scrimmage and can only wonder how amazing he would be if he was running behind a line like the one that use to block for Emmitt Smith, where he would be 5 yards down field before anyone had a hand on him.

another dissapointing loss but i dont blame mcnabb,ya he was poor i n the second half but i thought he looked ok in the first half, its the vanilla play calling that made him look bad, double that with a non existent berrian, shiancoe.the pass defense is as poor as ever

  25. By Mike on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

Wow what’s up with out passing game the defense gave the offense a chance to run the score up but the only person who showed up was AP and we stopped giving him the ball. Mcnabb looked like a pop warner QB with the numbers he put up so he didn’t really give our receivers a chance to shine, and why don’t we start Aromashodu over Berrian what has berrian proven with all the chances he’s been giving

  26. By Mike on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

I would like to know why is our offense still not aggressive, why did AP only get 16 touches, why is our passing defense so terrible its an every year thing I can’t remember the last season we had a good pass defense. We just lost a game that we had in our hands because of the passing offense and pass defense maybe its time to give sherrels and our other young guys a chance before this season end up worst than last year.

I believe that Mcnabb has potential to do good for us. The problem in last night’s game was the offensive line broke down on pass protection in the second half, and had him running for his life. Us die hard fans are getting tired of watching our beloved team, with so much talent, give up games that they should have won! There was also a focus issue with 3 offsides which prevented us a chance for a final drive. My question is are the Minnesota Vikings going to do start showing up to play for a full 60 minutes? By the way, we don’t have time to mess around with Chicago, Green bay, and Detriot all at 1-0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. By Bret on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

I’ve been watching the Vikings since 1969 so I’ve seen it all. I really enjoyed the first half of the game – aggressive defensive looks throughout. Unfortunately, the aggressive defense couldn’t keep in check at the end of the game with repeated off sides. AP ran like an animal and San Diego knew he was coming. However, I had no idea that we had so few passing yards until this morning. I knew it wasn’t good, but when the QB runs for as many yards as they pass… ? Need pass protection, need play action on 1st and 2nd downs occasionally, need to go out and win next week.

  31. By viking939 on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

@ Mike, they probably wanted to avoid injuries (Peterson), because of a strong charger Defense . The D was out of condition and what many people forget Kevin Williams is still suspended. I believe they are actually experimenting on Offense…

  36. By Rocksalt on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

    Vikings coach Leslie Frazier:

“We have to do a better job of getting off the field in key situations,” Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said. “It’s hard to play good defense when you don’t tackle, or don’t tackle well.”

Why don’t our players know how to tackle?

  37. By Jeffbleedspurple on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

For those that feel we need to run Peterson more, thats just pure craziness! he can’t carry this team on his back, it’s one thing if our O-line made his job easier, but Peterson pretty much fights for every yard and as someone said, just getting 5 yards beyond the line of scrimage is task and a half, we are going to wear his rear out before we even get half of his 100 mil out of him. Peterson is not our answer, he is a game changer, but he is not a one player football game.
The one pass to Berrian was not his fault, that was McNabbs doing, though the pass was thrown way short, it’s possiable Berrian could had gone back for it, but if the pass was on target, Berrian had his man beat.
McNabb surely was/is not the answer either, if you recall our starters didn’t do much at all during preseason either.
With the number 1 overall pick next year and our other high picks, maybe we can address secondary, OL, WR’s

  38. By david on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

why is it that every year our offense is so predictable and our defense NEVER covers the flats or can seem to get off the field on 3rd down. why did we not make a push this offseason for brandon meriweather or nhamdi?

When I heard the Vikings signed McNabb, I thought……oh noooooo, here we go again….Ponder clearly out played McNabb in pre-season. When they put Ponder in half way through the season, when its too late of course, everyone will understand………Going to be a long season…….

  40. By Robert on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

Well this looks a little like Favre’s Second season with the vikings. How long should we watch another “Seasoned” veteran player play and get paid for loosing. A player getting paid a premier salary should “Pro”-form like it!. I think the answer as to how long we should watch, the poor performance, is 2 more Quarters and if nothing changes then Ponder needs to move to Starter!

  41. By shred monkey on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

If a team like the bears is able to put 8 and 9 players in the box, Peterson’s not just gonna get stopped, he’s gonna get hurt. San Diego line up that way on the first play! I think the secret is out, Barrian can’t catch the ball so you can single cover us all day on the outside. So here’s my question…. Moss and TO are both available… what does it hurt to go get one or both of them? They can’t do worse then yesterday’s performance. Heck, you don’t even need to pass it to them, you can still just hand it off to AP and he’ll have 1 or 2 less defenders to beat because they’ll have to look pass on first down.

  42. By Joe Dirt on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

Why don’t the Vikings utilize AP? He needs 20-25 touches until McNabb can prove himself. I still supporting him. But have another game like that and I start petitioning for PONDER.

  43. By Jeffbleedspurple on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

It looks a lot more than just a little of last years Vikings under Favre, its a duplicate, was it the game against the Dolphins that Favre threw the pick 6? McNabbs pick 6 last night looked exactly like the same thing, I agree another game like that and we best think about using Ponder, but fat chance that will happen, Favre last year stunk like nothing else, got his brains beating all over the place and they didn’t pull him, not until he was pulled out because he could not take no more beatens.

  44. By Jeffbleedspurple on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

OK! this is Monday morning mailbag, so a question, last nights 28 yards passing by McNabb, WHY? was it the WR’s not getting open? was it the play calling? was it lack of QB protection from our O-line or was it the man himself McNabb? of course or D all of the above?

  45. By Jeffbleedspurple on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

Let’s just say the Vikings end up getting the #1 pick overall next year, what position do you think the Vikings will fill with that #1 pick?

  46. By Mr.Allen on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

McNabb proved himself the last few years, he is done. If Vikings continue with McNabb, we are done. Yes it was only the 1st game, but McNabb was pathetic, he is a back-up QB at best. Vikes have 2 choices and they have to act fast……If Not Ponder, we need coach Shannahan

I listened to this game on the radio yesterday as I drove home from my weekend with my daughters. The first half was great. I was thinking how great it would be to call in to Mike and Mike the next day and get in the face of Mike Greenberg who predicted we would lose by a large margin more than the 9 points the Las Vegas bookmakers were giving them. However, that dream went out the window when the second half began. How predictable was the play calling when they put Joe Webb in for a couple of plays. The reason most other teams don’t do this is because it is too predictable. If you’re gonna pull the QB, pull him for the rest of the game. McNabb’s first pass being intercepted was further proof that we were wrong to go in and get him. I would rather see Ponder have the opportunity like Newton did with Panthers. I would rather lose a game cuz we’re young and inexperienced at our core positions than to lose a game we should have won with veterans and didn’t. Harvin looked great, Peterson looked great early, but fizzled in the 2nds half. Perhaps giving him the extension so early took away his hunger for the contract qualifying game he might have played. I would like to hear Fraziers take on this game and what he hopes to change as a result.

  48. By ponderpurple on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

How can anyone be surprised by this performance, considering our roster I think we performed fairly well against the Chargers and wont face too many more teams with the passing threat that they bring on Sunday. One must have confidence in our coaching staff as it really is one of the best that we have ever had. I do believe that McNabb was a poor choice and has proven that he is only a backup at this point in his career.
I would assume that by midseason we will see Ponder and Webb gain much needed playing time to prepare for the future and with some new personnel in the dback positions and Dline we should only get better over the next few seasons
Bring back Leber, he had far better pass coverage than any of our current linebackers.

I think the play calling was not very good, we need to open up the field a little more. If we can’t protect mcnabb we need to roll him out a little more so he can find some receivers or possibly run. The first half the team did pretty good and the second half they looked like they were still playing preseason. I was not happy with mcnabbs performance, But give credit to where credit was due. the chargers held the ball it seemed like the whole game. they had great ball control and that is what the vikings need to do.

I still say Childress is in the booth calling the plays. You think Zygi is going to let him walk away with his cash this year? Same stupid, predictable play calling. Try shocking the world with a FAKE to A.P. on first down and go for a fly route to Berrian. Tell Berrian that if he doesn’t catch the pass, he’s fired, but no pressure yellow shoes Johnson. I’m still looking for the Fresno Bulldog, but I think he got his money and became a porch pooch.

i only saw the second half of the game, but what i saw was a totally predictable offense, with mcnabb throwing to the receivers feet, a trait i hoped he left in philly. the only bright spot was jared allens pick and what did they do with the turnover; they tried the wildcat with webb on 2 downs in which didn’t fool anybody. that wasn’t the time or place for the razzle dazzle. they should have taken advantage of the momentum swing and marched down the field and scored. the passing game needs lots of work!

  64. By Carl Brodin on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

We need to start the next game by going right to play action either down the seam to shiancoe, rudulph or over the middle to Harvin or down the sideline to Jenkins or bite my tongue Berrian. the idea behind this is to make the opponent make there safeties stay off the line of scrimage that would be 1st down. Then go trips left three tight ends put harvin in the slot to the right Berrian outside of Harvin. Fake Adrian to the middle right hand off to Harvin on an end around. The whole idea behind this is to confuse the opponents defence so they dont know whats coming next.

  65. By vikefan1969 on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

The QB needs some protection…just like AP needs some blocks, I think Jenkins should have gotten more looks as well, And if you are going to use Webb he needs to be at WR, for more than 1 or 2 plays, and you dont pull the QB to put him in…everyone knows what is coming.
I do think this was a very good to great team they played…so I do think they will get much better as the season goes on…lets not forget New Staff, New O and D schemes…and a New Starting QB in a shortened season trying to learn as well.
Give them a chance folks..I was not expecting the game to be so close…and am not expecting a playoff run this year either…but it would be nice…Over 40 years a Viking

    Viking Fans,

McNabb is not the problem. His arm is as good as anyone in the league. The offensive Line is poor and the receivers he has to work with are poor route runners except for Harvin and Kliensausser. You only have three guys(Allen,Greenway and Winfield) playing on defense. The rest are sleepers.

AP got lost in the 100 million dollars he had been given. He still is out celebrating. He is being too patient. I don’t see the quickness I did years ago. Too conservative. Not aggressive enough.

They are not dominent and should be but you won’t if you only play 1/2 of football. Great teams finish their enemy.

They would have been better off giving Randy and Terrell a one year contract.

    Those guys can run routes.

I really need someone to answer this question. Why do our cornerbacks and safeties give up the 10 yards that they should be knocking the receiver off the block.

Cover two ok then cover. We give up so much yardage to the receivers so they can run over us all day.

There is only one reason why the Vikings lost this last week and it is called PLAY CALLING. Why don’t Mr. Frasier and Mr. Musgrave and Mr. Pagac watch a real team like the NE Pats and learn some new coaching tactics or maybe implement a hurry up offense or change it up a bit. It’s hard to believe that only three Vikings actually showed up yesterday Percy and Jared and Chad. Why can’t you throw the ball down the middle to the TE Shaiancoe or Rudolph or have Harvin or Berrian or Jenkins run slant routes? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to make play calls with quality talent. The secondary defense just flat quit the second half. It will be a long year with a defense like that.

Your Minnesota Vikings were definitely not ready for the season opener and it was a huge embarrassment for a 30 year Vikings fan like me.

Mr. Musgrave please call better plays. You did not utilize any of your tight ends or wide receivers in a pro manner. The play calling look like high school football! This run, run, pass formula every series is terrible! You have QB that is more then capable of making plays, let him. Harvin, Shancoe, Jenkins, etc didn’t touch the ball. Thats play calling people. Even Jim Mora jr. who was broadcasting the game, notice how elementary the play calling was. There is a lot of talent on this team. Don’t waste it. Coach Frazier step up, tell him to open up the offense. Rivers threw the ball 48 times, McNabb only 15 times. Are you kidding me? Who can get in a rhythm in the NFL throwing 15 times. The offensive coaching was really bad. Hopefully, the coaches will see that and make huge adjustments against the bucs.

After seeing all these postings by other fans of a great football team, coaches need to WAKE up? Players that have the attitude to play should play, those that
have the attitude not to play should sit?
Lets face it, they get paid enough to go all out, we need to play the winners and we do have some winners on the team, get Jared Allen to instill some of his great desire.
McNabb is not a fired up player for this team and it is easy to see! I no this is the first game, however winning breeds winning. Chicago won, Green Bay won, and guess what, Detroit won, ALL IN OUR DIVISION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was born the month that the Vikings became an official team. I have been a fan all my life. I remember Fran T. – Mercury Morris – The purple people eaters.
I enjoyed Brett Farve giving us a chance. Was abit disappointed last year, but everyone tried. Was thrilled to hear about Ponder. Thought we had a good chance to build with Webb and Ponder. THEN – MY HEART WAS CRUSHED.
MCNABB — ARE YOU KIDDING — i COULD WATCH.
hEARD ABOUT MCNABB’S HORRIBLE TYPICAL PERFORMANCE.
PUT IN PONDER OR WEBB AND LETS BUILD A REAL TEAM — .

Hey Chargers’ fans, every year your team is overrated, picked to win your division, a weak one at that!! Picked to go to the Super Bowl and no where to be found!! Your team finished 1st in offense and 1st in defense last year and you still didn’t make the playoffs!! You stink!! You wish you had the following that we do with our team!! I’m like the rest of you, sick and tired of old washed up QB’s!! I’d rather lose with a rookie than lose with a veteran!! Let’s build this into a championship team!! Let the Ponder/Webb era begin!!

    @Ron in Virginia
Mercury Morris never played with the Vikes!! He
    played for the Dolphins!!
    @Purplehorn
Sanford was where he was suppose to be!! In the end zone covering a wideout!! Exactly where a safety is suppose to be!! EJ and Chad left the running back to go after Rivers!! It’s the linebackers responsibilty to cover the running backs!!

What a joke…old, burnt out McNabb! Brett was a million times better and he was older! Brett gave us the most exciting year we had in a long time! He could throw the ball! Bring Brett back to coach Ponder and Webb, dump McNabb! I bet no one picks him up this time. Play Ponder, he is ready!

New name….McLoser. Get rid of the loser. Put in Ponder and then Webb as back up. They won’t learn anything from McLoser except what not to do. We need a Winner. Isn’t that why we brought in Ponder?

As a vikes fan it was deppresing to watch the pats last night. 517 yrds passing? Is anyone learning anything out there. How long has Brady and Beli. been Workin together now? Its A solid system with good QB and head coach relations. Our fly by night offense will not work.

  92. By TMFJONES/ CALI. on Sep 13, 2011 | Reply

Ponder 61 yards rushing. McNabb 39 yrds passing. first pass intercepted?I know not one single fan cares if we lose with Ponder or Webb. Wathching a veteran struggle is the worst .

The idea of play action is to fool the defense. If the QB and RB dont do a convincing fake, play action wont work. You gotta sell it better. Be a better actor. Dont just go through motions. I tought this to my pee wee team.RB act like you have it and run. Both arms at your bellie and get low. QB hide Ball from defense, act like you dont have it. Fundamentals Viking coaches, Fundamentals.Does The NFL take walk on asst. coaches ? Looks like coaching staff is just going through the motions.Coach em up.

Why not start Ponder. Smart, fast, and does not throw the ball into the ground. Clearly we know it must be something else,do I have to say it. A Head Coach that picks Donovan, mmm I wonder why ????? Are they friends ? GT

  95. By Pinebrigade on Sep 13, 2011 | Reply

Go get David Garrard and trade McSwagger for some WR’s. Garrard is young and still wants to prove himself, Donovan is clearly on his farewell tour.

  96. By Wally World on Sep 13, 2011 | Reply

Ponder no more!! Put Ponder in, and bench or trade McNabb. McNabb is a has been. Get a new coach too, while we’re at it. One that has >>>>>. Go Vikes!

First of all it was not Mcnabb it was the scheme. So heres my question. Maybe we should keeping in account our play makers abilities maybe we should on every other series try passing on 1st down. I’m not saying abandon the run. I think they were triing to steal one the first game. They were triing not to show alot this first game but i think they need to target there tight ends more and along with Harvin get Jenkins and Berrian involved especially Jenkins he should be out there since he knows this offence more than anybody else. Lets split Booker out wide also. Most of all lets not be so vanilla and predictable. What do you think? Maybe we should try our fifth round draft pick at LT for a game.
