Preseason game #2 is in the books and we’re now one step closer to the regular season. As it usually does, the preseason has generated mixed results and plenty of reason to be excited for the regular season.

With all that’s happened from training camp through half of the preseason, you must have questions and I know you have opinions.

So let’s hash it all out in the Monday Morning Mailbag.

    Hey Mike,

There has been a lot of talk about switching Loadholt to LT and DeGeare playing at RT. If this does turn out to be the case where do you see Johnson playing? Could he not slide over to RT in a straight swap with Loadholt?

My question has to do with the CB position i have to listen to the broadcasts for away games on line because i live in Oshksh WI. I did not see to much on the nfl.com tracker last night in regards to Chris Cook. Where does he stand in the CB rotation? Also Asher Allen with his week performance in the first preseason game can he make the team? Marcus Sherrals looking real good. Will Brandon Burton and Devin Torrence make the team? Based on last nights performance will Mistral Raymond make the team?

Here we go again. Fix the audio at the pressers please. One of you guys needs to check out your production once in a while. The mics do not work. So frustrating.

    good day mike.
do you think, that after the cardinals gave larry fitzgerald a long term contract, dont you think the vikings front office need to start considering giving peterson a long term deal as well, before the end of this season, and before he become a free agent????…you can understand my concern….when teams like dallas have all the money in their check books to spend on a good player, not mentioning, peterson is from texas

Is there any chance of Bernard Berrian being let go and his salary space being used to bring in one of the LT’s still on the Market…Starks or Stinchcomb would be upgrades over Charlie Johnson. Loadholt could stay at RT and Johnson could compete with Herrera or DeGeare for the RG slot. Berrian’s lack of size and size of heart are showing and we could help out or weak O-Line by bringing in a real LT to protect McNabb’s blindside.

does anyone know when the first cut-down date is?

Mike: Do you think the Vikes will work Webb or Ponder in with the 1st team with the 2 remaining pre-season games? I would like to see it happen.

  8. By Parody on Aug 21, 2011 | Reply

@Spanky8 – Teams are required to drop down to 80-players by August 30th. In other years, this deadline required teams to drop to 75, but a little extra leeway is being given this year because of the lockout. The final 53-man roster cuts need to be completed by September 3rd.

Vikings need to address their O-line.

When are we gonna get some people who can give our qb’s some time?

what would it take for the vikings to win the super bowl? Do you think peterson is considering leaving the vikings?

please be done with all of the bandaids and rebuild this good team with the talent you have right now. Us true vikings fans can wait a few years for this to happen. right true fans?

is their a big chance of juaquin iglesias making the team? i really like the guy and ive seen him play the past 2 games and he looks like a guy who gets open a lot, its just that ponder and webb need to be better at scanning the field and look for guys like him to make a big play.

    Mike,

I was wondering what exactly happened with the situation of retaining Sidney Rice? He recently came forward with a statement to the media that he didn’t even recieve a call from Minnesota once Free Agency began.

What was the reasoning behind this?

    Thank you,

    -Nicholas

Not really a question here, but just two wishes: cut Johnson and give him some parting gifts. He’s a good guy, but come on, it’s super clear he just doesn’t “have it”. Bye bye, thanks for playing. Next to cut is Berrian. Just do it. It’s ok, you blew it with him. No parting gifts for him. Only those that try, or have heart, get the parting gifts which include free roller coaster ride at Mall of America, or free tour of Beer factories in Wisconsin.

    Mike,
I haven’t heard much on shiancoe’s progress with his injury. In the mean time, I have been very impressed with the rookie TE Rudolph. What are his playing time expectations? I know we have multiple TE’s with experience, is he going to be used in 2 TE sets? Just wondering what your feel is of the TE situation. Thanks

What chance does Carter (#49) have of making the team? He showed alot of speed and made some great plays. Also he does not look lost like cook and allen do.

Will the best quarterback get the opportunity to start this year for the Vikings? And would coaches and ownership really be concerned about “hurting someones feelings” if that person wasn’t McNabb?

Has there been any progress in re-signing Peterson? I would hate to see the Vikings lose him after this year.

LB Larry Dean is an undrafted free agent trying to make the Vikings roster. What is the evaluation of him so far?

  23. By Jake W on Aug 21, 2011 | Reply

Mike, what do you see happening at the CB position? We know Winfield and Griffin are the starters with Cook coming in and Antoine sliding inside in the nickel, but who else makes the team? Asher Allen has some good potential but hasn’t performed up to his abilities at times. Burton could be a solid coverage guy down the road. What about Sherrels?

I was fortunate to be present at last night’s game just a few rows back in the endzone where the Vikes ‘D’ made that impressive showing of stopping the Seahawks on the 2 yard line for 4 consecutive downs. What a show, a typical MN defensive performance and I can’t wait to see more as the season progresses.

The MN Offensive line however, I can’t say much positive about. It’s as if things have started where they left off last season and the defense is still carrying the team. I realize there’s been many changes and there are a lot of new faces and young players, but the amount of pressure that Viking’s quarterbacks saw is very concerning and it’s difficult to see that the situation could improve much any time soon without a drastic change. In particular it felt like the O-line was being penetrated quite a bit neat the left tackle. McNabb and Web are both great scramblers but they only have two eyes like the rest of us, if this continues it could have considerable impact as a QB is more likely to get injured if they take continuous abuse from the blind side and additionally this will begin to cause poor team morale and contribute to overall poor performance by the team and we’ll end up with another wasted season.

Why would the Vikings coaches make such a drastic change as swapping out a proven lineman with so short of a preseason, can Charlie Johnson honestly perform at the same level as Bryant Mckinnie was able to? What needs to happen and what realistic actions can the Vikings do right now on the O-line to better protect the Quarterback?

looks like we got a great head coach finaly, that has been the missing feature for the last several years.when you listen to coach frazier in interviews, he doesn’t have to stop and think,he doesn’t have to search for words.,He is truley a man who knows what he wants and knows where to get it.I lok forward to watching what this man is going to do.

  26. By pudster on Aug 21, 2011 | Reply

Just to add, coach Burns was good, coach Grant was great, I think coach Frazier will end up at the minimum between the two.

What is you perception of the 2011 draft class? I think there are several players that will not only make the team, but possibly start. give us fans some feedback….

    Mike,

I read that the Offensive Line will be blocking more in a “straight ahead”
movement rather than in a Zone Blocking Scheme. Not being too familiar with
the difference between “Zone Blocking” and “Straight Ahead Blocking” what is that difference as it pertains to run blocking and pass protection? Thanks Mike.

Mike are we going to have to leave the tight end in on Charlie Johnsons side to help protect Mcnabb for the first few regular season games ? He has definitely not figured it out. I also agree with one of the other bloggers Inglesius should be given along look. I also think we should go with 6 wide recievers so the kid from Canada can get some more looks. The 2nd team defence looked good on the goal line. We need to get the offensive line figured out over all it’s looked pretty bad.

do u think the vikings need to bring in a another corner like bulter from new england i like c cook but he seems like a safety and allen sometimes gives up the big play.

    Mike-
Can you see to it that Brad Childess’s name, along with others who are no longer on the team have their names removeed from the tags? It is REALLY ANNOYING!

McNabb found a new home in football. The Minnesota Vikings is a championship team this year that will compeat neck to neck with any team. Just play football.

MIKE, we are about under a million away from the salary cap if i read correctly, with those numbers is signing Adrian Peterson even possible? would we have to cut other players? do you think if we have another bad year Peterson will leave like Sidney did?
