Submit Your Monday Morning Mailbag Questions

Posted by Mike Wobschall on August 14, 2011 – 2:01 pm

Preseason game #1 is in the books and training camp is roughly halfway complete. The Vikings have moved north from Mankato back to Eden Prairie and will complete training camp at Winter Park. With all that’s happened, you must have questions and I know you have opinions.

So let’s hash it all out in the Monday Morning Mailbag.

To submit a comment or question, send an email to me at wobschallm@vikings.nfl.net. You can also submit your comment or question in the comments section below this entry.

Remember to include your name and town on the comment/email. We can’t post every comment/question, but we’ll try to answer each question.

I think our play in the devensive backs was poor against the titans, Cedric Griffin has had a lot of injures and Winfield is 34 I think we need better play do you expect the Vikings to do more in that area?

I ve had this gut feeling all along that M. Raymond will be in the starting line-up by week 4. Mike any possiblity that we can we locate another rabbitt in the hat from the secondary during practice next week?

How do Vikings fans in MN feel about the constant taLk of relocating the team?

Also, how would you feel if they played their home games in an outdoor stadium in MN?

#78 Seth olsen played alot against Tennessee. What do you think his prospects are for making the team?

And here’s a question my son always asks: “Dad, why are you so loyal to the Vikings?” …. Good question. I don’t know why. It’s a constant love-hate battle inside. I just wish for the day I don’t have to be a “closet fan” who’s embarrassed to admit it …. Someday …. I keep telling myself it will be like the Patriots who were so awful for all those years and now are a top notch team

    Mike Wobschall-
Leslie Frazier said in his postgame presser that Ponder will flip flop with Webb this week and work with the 2nd team offense. Does this mean Ponder is officially the #2 QB on the depth chart?
What does Jaymar Johnson need to do to win the punt return job? I would like to see him return a few more punts. Any chance that the Vikings will let Jaymar return a kickoff in the preseason too?

  8. By Mike B on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

To clarify my disagreement, I felt that Webb should have hurt his position at #2 QB and that Ponder should be the #2 QB. We agree otherwise. A NFL QB should do the things that Ponder did and Webb didn’t do those things. Sorry for the confusion Mike W.

Why does the offensive line get pushed around? They were outmatched by the first team of the titans defense and they fail to pick up a short yardage first down.

  10. By CA_Viking_fan on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

Yes, that’s a very good question regarding the O-line. Do they do any weightlifting, and in particular, explosive power training?

  11. By Maui_Vikes_Fan on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

Is it just me or did both sides of the Vikes line get hammered in the Tennessee game? First, second, third string…….made no difference. Only special teams coverages looked good. I understand the offense being out of sync, but the defense should be looking a lot better than they did. How do they shore up the lines in the next few weeks?

I liked Frazier’s comment, “We have to let Joe Webb be Joe Webb.”

Frazier has a good perspective of things. He will make many correct decisions for this football team.

After watching the first half I have a question. I live in VA and did not get a chance to see the vikings in training camp. So to my question? Can any DB’s that the vikings have on their roster cover anybody? All I have seen so far is very slow and confused DB’s. I think the first round of cuts should be all the DB’s that played and try to find some from somewhere else.

    Mike,

How is the Chad Greenway contract coming along? Will we learn from past mistakes? or will history repeat itself? Will we lock down Greenway long term before next offseaon? or will we be forced to choose between Greenway and Peterson? much the same as we had to choose between Greenway and Rice this year? I applaude the coaches for making the right choice … but I dont think a team would mind giving up the franchise draft picks for Peterson leaving Greenway on the open Market

Will we lose Peterson and Greenway next offseason?

How is the Greenway contract coming along?

Shawn, you are right- the one that takes the offense is really the one keeping it alive– short of taping the guy’s mouth shut and filling his mouth with super glue, you cannot really control another person’s actions or words– but you can control your reaction to it. That said, our collective action can be to ban those people from this site. Sure, we cannot control them, nor should we really, but we don’t have to listen to them. I would not allow that person in my home– one racial comment out of his mouth — adios, he is gone. I feel I am rambling– I am going to bed.

I don’t care for it either Rocksalt, but I’m more on the side of creating knowledge over forcing people to act your way. I don’t like any form of censoring, because of the control factor implied. Plus, with many people, they will intentionally lash out and the things you are trying to control them not to, in this case cuss and spew racial slurs. That’s why I think it’s better to try to teach people better morals and ignore the ones who refuse to learn.

@ Fun We haven’t been so good with QBs we have drafted either, so which set of mistakes are you willing to take. None of those have gotten us to the big game either. @snags There was some press coverage about the Vikings looking to pick up Taylor Mays. Singletary drafted Mays last year when he was headcoach at 49ers. He has lot of potential but not proven NFL safety. (from what I have read) Lots of blog activity about him due to our secondary play. I would imagine there would be more. Mike W has stated when I asked this question he thiinks the team will go with what they have currently. Will be interesting to see what happens after the poor secondary play on Saturday. Have A great Week all

Keep the faith in Big D! Eight or nine practices doesn’t make or break our season. The front office and coaches know the skill sets of our returning players. The weak areas the coaches will develop drills to shore those up. If players flat out lack the instincts to play at this high level, they’ll be replaced. Overall, from what I’m seeing and hearing, camp is productive, positive, and without controversy. That’s a huge improvement over last season!

Mike w: you stated earlier that Joe Webb did nothing to warrent losing the #2 spot as Vikings QB, Perhaps he didn’t, but just after what we seen in Saturdays game do you honestly believe Ponder did nothing to earn it? its one thing to do nothing to lose a job, but another for a competitor to earn it, Ponder looked much more a QB than Webb and this is Webbs 2nd year, sure the int was a mistake, but those kinds of mistakes are better suited for rookies.
I think after the Seattle game this will be a move by the Vikings, then what? move foreward! McNabb look out, Ponder is coming to get you, hahaha!!

My understanding is that Singletary is currently trying to convince the top brass to pull the trigger on Mays

what is with the horrible tackling, we have had to watch this for a few years now. I say take a whole day and week to get it right, how come they don’t wrap up and tackle, bring them down, I say bring in Jim Marshall, Carl Eller, and Joey Browner to teach them how to do it right, heck bring in Big Pat, he was a scholar at how to wrap up, and bring them down with his body, learn guys, learn guys, or it will be a long season with a lot of points and records broke against us.

Why are the vikings salary cap so low this year? is it because of the dome repair?
