What To Expect In The NFL Today

Posted by Mike Wobschall on July 26, 2011 – 6:03 am

Yesterday was a great day for football fans in America and it was an especially busy day for the Vikings. Obviously the NFL and NFLPA ratified a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), officially lifting the lockout, but even more than that the Vikings announced that training camp would return to Minnesota State University, Mankato and then later in the day Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier held a press conference.

So what should we expect today?

It’s hard to know exactly what to expect in this unusual post-lockout climate, but there are a few things we can be almost certain about:

– NFL facilities, including Winter Park, will be open for players to stop in for conditioning, training and even any classroom work they might want to get done. So I won’t be surprised at all to see some Vikings players trickle into the facility. If that happens, we’ll be sure to catch up with them and provide you with updates via videos and written content.

– At 9:00 a.m. CT teams can begin the process of signing their draft picks and any undrafted free agents they’d like to bring to training camp. For the Vikings, this is an especially important task because there are 10 draft picks to sign and because VP of Player Personnel Rick Spielman indicated on Monday that the team plans to take advantage of the 90-man roster rule (in a normal year teams are permitted only 80-man rosters), which means there will likely be several undrafted free agents the team will bring aboard.

– Also on Tuesday, the trading period begins. I don’t know of any trade rumors tied to the Vikings, but you never know what’s going on behind the scenes and you also never know which teams will call with an idea in mind.

– Finally on Tuesday, teams can begin negotiations with free agents of their own and with free agents from other teams. So watch for plenty of rumors to be flying around about which players will sign with which teams.

That’s about all I can guarantee for now, but I’ll be sure to chime in as today rolls on. Feel free to leave a comment in the comments section below this entry to let us know what you want to talk about.

Rumor has it that the Vikings signed WR Andre Holmes from Hillsdale. He had 104 receptions and 1,368 yrds (school records) last year. Andre is 6’4 and ran a 4.45 40. Nice pickup Vikes!

If the Vikings picked up this Andre Holmes nice going Spielman are you triing to tell Rice something? like maybe he’s expendable this kid sounds like he has Sidney Rice measurerables. We could have an interesting crop of wide recievers this year to bad we could not find some OL.

A bargain available not previously mentioned is Derrick Mason. Veteran enough to be a player-coach. There are plenty of others that may hurt the cap. Plaxico could be another bargain. This Holmes guy sounds like a bright young one, and a bargain also. Sounds like we might have money for an elite blocker in the middle. Please get one!!!!!, Detriot’s D Line is looking stout.

Plaxico is wearing a ring, by beating an undefeated Brady team. (voted no.1). But not because of Elil. Mason’s been to the big game before. And has been classy and dependable. Sign them to short terms if Sidney leaves

With Ben Lieber reportedly leaving, are we going after any Free Agent LBs?
I thought his play was marginal. I wonder if there will be Two Henderson’s out there? Are we deep enough without Ben Lieber?

I don’t think we are that deep at outside LB. You never really see Leber or Greenway subbing out when the defense is on the field. I know we drafted that guy out of Ohio State but we need to get a LB with some above average speed on the outside.

Carl Brodin – I don’t think Sidney is worried about Andre Holmes. Holmes is a nice undrafted free agent pick up, but he will have to work to make this roster. We have good young depth at WR… Rice is still a priority for Spielman.

Sidney Rice may not have to worry about Andre Holmes… but this is a good write up about him.

I think (rumor has it) the Vikings signed an OLB named Larry Dean from Valdosta State. 368 career tackles and won some national player of the year honors. It sounds like the Valdosta fans love this guy. D2 guy with a great work ethic.

Carl K i hope your right about us signing this Andre Holmes just in case they loose Sidney Rice. The other point is we do not have young depth behind Rice except for Harvin and the kid from Canada. Another reciever the Vikings should look at is Terence Tolliver from LSU 6’4 214 4.59 SP. I dont know about the Donovan Mcnabb signing except to keep Sidney Rice. We also signed a WR from Chicogo.

Carl Brodin – I disagree, I think we have good young talent behind Rice!
    Percy Harvin
    Arceneaux Emmanuel
    Devin Aromashadu
    Greg Camarillo
    Jaymar Johnson
    Juaquin Iglesias
    Stephen Burton
    Andre Holmes

Percy might be the only star at this point, but I think many of them have an upside and give us solid depth at WR. If we land McNabb I would bet Webb might get some looks at WR too.

Carl K theres nobody here to stretch the field short of Sidney Rice. Percy Harvin will get double teamed. That leaves the two tight ends and A.P. Dont get me wrong i hope this Holmes kid turns out. Like i said earlier we should take a look at Terence Toliver from LSU. The rest of these guys short of Greg Carmello and Arceneaux Emmanuel are all special teamers. We also need 1 or 2 blockers to make some holes for A.P.

To follow up on what i said above the Vikings need to get a center like Olin Kruetz from Chicogo. Then find a guard or Tackle from some where else. Get rid of Bryant Mckinnie and make Sullivan a back up. I think we will have to release Berrian he’s a civ. M. Williams he’s a civ. unfotunately let Ben Leber and Jim Kliensasser. We need to get the cap number down. Like i said before i hope one or more of these kids work out.

Well Rice is gone so now we need to go and get 1 more veteran wide reciever maybe we should try to get Brandon Marshall or roll with the recievers we have i guess. Well were do we go now maybe with the money we saved go get some offensive lineman because now with this offensive line we have now we will get Donvan Mcnabb killed. I see we signed a couple of undrafted rookie guards. I sure hope Andre Holmes works out. I understand we signed a rookie CB that can cover and hit.
