Shiancoe Excited For 2011 Season

Posted by Mike Wobschall on July 25, 2011 – 3:59 pm

Count Vikings TE Visanthe Shiancoe as one who is excited that the NFL’s work stoppage is over and the season is about to begin.

“Been a long process but finally things are worked out…can’t wait to see the guys and get back to work,” Shiancoe said via text message.

Shiancoe stops to sign autographs for fans after an evening practice at Verizon Vikings Training Camp

Shiancoe will be entering his 5th season with the Vikings after signing a free agent contract with the team prior to the 2007 season. The 6-4, 250-pound TE struggled to fit in with the Vikings offense during his first season here, but since then Shiancoe has become an integral part of the passing game. His best season was in 2009 when he had 56 receptions for 566 yards and 11 TDs.

Watch for Shiancoe to have another big year in 2011. The Vikings drafted TE Kyle Rudolph in the 2nd round of last April’s draft, leaving open the possibility for two TE sets and also indicating that new offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave values pass-catching TEs. Remember, Musgrave comes from the Atlanta Falcons, where young QB Matt Ryan had a nice safety net in TE Tony Gonzalez.

Speaking of young QBs, the Vikings have a pair of youngsters who will compete for the starting QB job in 2011. For those young QBs – Christian Ponder and Joe Webb – a productive, pass-catching TE is a great weapon.

“This is going to be an exciting year,” Shiancoe says.

Hopefully Shiancoe has another big season like he did in 2009.

All I have to say is – about time!! Let’s get everyone in, get their physicals, get them a copy of that playbook and get some reps with those young QB’s! I still like the thought of picking up a journeyman QB to be backup/teacher/mentor but am a believer in letting those young players go out and learn real time at full speed. You can study game film/pictures until your eyes bleed, but the best way to learn to read an NFL defense has to be on the field. SKOL VIKINGS!! 2011 NFC North Champs (provided we get some o-line/secondary help via free agency)

Wow did Frazier say alot without giving out their exact plan. Pretty much laid out they are going to try and get Sidney Rice, but if Rice is only looking at getting a big contract they will not mortgage the farm for him. He didn’t commit to any players that are free agents waiting tenders. He is looking for players that want to be Vikings, so will leave out Free agents that are looking for big time contracts no matter where they play. I am reading into this, but definately the tone I read from coach. Does this bode lots of younger new players in Vikings uniforms? Doesn’t sound like money will be availible for big name OL free agents. What do you all think?

I am pumped about this season. I think the Vikings did an awesome job before the lockout. Picking up WR Emmanuel Arceneaux will be huge. I watched some highlights on youtube of this guy and cant’ wait to see him play. I also like the signing of DE adrian Awasom. I think both of those players will have an impact in 2011.

I think in the last few weeks of the season last year, they found their third down back threat/KR in Booker.

If our young QB plays decent, it will be a very exciting year.

With the addition of Rudolph, the Vikings will create mismatches because they will be able to go into a two tight end set and either run or pass. Think about that. A run heavy set they can pass out of. Defenses won’t know. I think our new head coach has been building since the last few days of the season last year.

Even if Sidney Rice doesn’t return, I am confident the Vikings will put up many pioints with the following people on their roster…

    TE Rudolph
    TE Shianco
    WR Arceneaux, Emmanuel
    WR Harvin
    WR Jaymar Johnson
    WR Iglesias, Juaquin
    WR Berrian, Bernard
    RB Adrian Peterson
    RB Toby Gerhardt
    RB Lorenzo Booker

Make now doubt about it. The Vikings will be much better than last year if the young QB Ponder plays well.

It will be exciting to see the young QB and a couple of the young WR the vikes have brought on board.

Excited to have a full season and looking forward to watch our rookies perform and I’m sure they will have an outstanding year. Now we need to stress about a new stadium. We can not loose our team!

Harvin is a very versitile weapon. He is very fast, has terrific hands and has terrific ability to break tackles, not to mention his amazing kick return ability. I think with him and Rouldolf for ponder, plus ap in the backfeild he has a good chance for success. If the defensive line plays good we could be looking at a playoff team. but HARVIN AND ADRIAN RULE

Well, we lost Rice, but at least Shiancoe will be back. Looking forward to seeing Shianco on the field again this season.
