Good Lord! Winners are built through the O line and D line. Gimme a break! Is Chilly still workin behind the scenes? I thought Leslie was a defensive coach!

I think this is a great pick, young QB’s need TE’s to throw to. I love this pick

  3. By randy on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

We need now to work on both sides of the line!! The draft is deep on the defensive side!! So go and get the offensive line next!! Then the d-line!!

  4. By chris26 on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

a line means nothing without playmakers, and i’m not convinced one bad year means our line is that horrible.

what a wasted pick we need a DE and we got a TE very disapointed

  6. By Jim on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

Wow, this was a surprise considering the needs on “D” and the availability of highly touted defensive guys still left. On the other hand, Rudolph is a big kid with good speed and hands. He could be a nice weapon for Ponder (HOF 2030) to go to in the red zone. Go Vikes!

great pick there are many de left in the draft

  8. By Geiber on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

Very unexpected! Wow! Did not see this one coming! But he will definitely add some to our offense giving ponder ever more great receivers to throw to!

  9. By Bigfan1 on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

This guy is rated high and he’s only a kid at 21, great pick. We need another tight end.

  10. By greedyvike on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

are you kidding me… i am ashamed to be a viking fan right now. we already have a great TE in visanthe….why would we take another one…when we have more needs…this season is going to be another losing one..especially since we dont have a 3rd round pick..they better be hoping to pick up a whole new O line and some defensive backs on top of the qb problem that we already have, but of course we are not gonna have money to get everything we need. so might as well not even watch any games this season

  11. By alex on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

why do we need a DE when more than likely we will get ray edwards back. shiancoe is gone after this year and he is the best TE. yall dont know what you are talking about. who would rather take, a great TE, or a DE like bowers who wont make it past his rookie contract and wont play this year? pretty simple.

  12. By David on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

Shocked by this pick with our current defensive needs. Even if we bring back Ray Edwards we need Safety help badly, williams is terrible. Could have used a CB and moved Winfield to FS. With todays medical advancements, Bowers is that risky of a pick? Are you guys forgetting we have Kliensasser and Shiancoe? Not to mention Rice, Harvin, Peterson? At the worst we should have went Oline , RG or C even LT to give McKinnie some competition. What about OLB? Leber is old, I love EJ but he isn’t getting younger. Some youth on Defense would have been the clear winner with this pick. Very dissapointed Minnesota!

  13. By Thob on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

Rudolph will be a match-up nightmare for other teams. They won’t use him the same way they use Visanthe. He’s a sick athlete and has an amazing physical upside. He brings a needed element to a totally flat passing game. I’ll agree that we need some line help further down, and our 2 safeties may be the worst tandem in the league. Anyone see any of the pursuit angles M. Williams took last year? We need to send him to Detroit or something.

  14. By Blarson on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

I dont quite understand this pick. He has a lot of talent but we have Kleinsasser and Shank. Is Kleinsasser going to Fullback next year maybe? I think we need a safety.

  15. By Pete on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

Not happy about this pick. Even if he is a great TE. We need a O Line Man. Come on Man!

  16. By Chaz on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

I am surprised but a good pick, Shank is 30+ and on a conract year. They were looking to a good future! Ponder will be happy.

  17. By VKing56 on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

Who cares that we all ready have 2 TE’s. When the Ravens took T.Heap they had S.Sharpe. Well it looks like that worked out well for them. This guy could be the next Heap and that would be great for a QB like Ponder. I think this pick is great.

  18. By joshK on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

lmao. so i wanted Amukamara or Pouncey 1st round they were there. we reach for a qb. TERRIBLE. 2nd round… im thinking whatever lets get raheme moore and it will be a decent draft.. hes available and we take a TE when we have the best TE in the NFL. shank has the most TDs in the past 3 years for people who didnt know. terrible draft hope we have a terrible year. not like it matters if we have good draft spots we will just reach for bad players or someone we dont need.

  19. By Ben on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

I like this pick if you think of Green Bay the way they use Jermichael Finley with there tight end I think Minnesota will go that way with Rudolph

  20. By Jim on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

Get rid of kleinsausauge put shank and rudolph in the game together that would be dangerous to have two pass catching tight end that can block. Lets hope the vikes utilize rudolph and not let him stand around the point is to draft and give them as much playing time as possible to be better.

  21. By Ponder is ROY on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

1st round was a need pick, this round is a value pick. Vikes reversed the normal formula. I would have preferred Paea, Rahim Moore or Marvin Austin…but who knows, this kid looks like a specimen while Shank is a puny, poor pass-blocking, one year wonder and Sausser is getting old and slow(er).

  22. By Loon on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

I am looking forward to watching the offense. Should be very exciting! Will need to score a ton of points with not addressing the defensive needs. Face it folks, we have alot of holes to fill and we are a long way from a serious contender.

  23. By Stevicus on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

Some fans need to lighten up. The draft is about enjoying the possibilities and expecting the Vikings will be much better with the added talent. I think we were weak with possession receivers and this guy could help us alot in that area.

  24. By VikeFan on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

I agree chris26. The Vikings OL needs attention but they were poor last year. The 2009 year the OL did do some blocking I would have to think “CCG”. A second TE sets up a dual TE formation. As for DE. lol if Bowers is available tomorrow in the 4th. I could see that. We need a DT and DB’s. A WR wouldnt suprise me either.

  25. By Jim on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

Lets grab a wideout next give ponder all these weapons to work with.

  26. By Puder on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

Its a good pick we really didnt need him that badly but he was one of the best available players and in the future he should be a top 5 tight end,hes a playmaker, he is also a receiver type TE so it helps us. good pick i enjoyed watching him at ND and will at Minnesota also.

  27. By Blarson on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

Get rid of Kleinsasser are you crazy. He is the best blocking TE in the league. He is basically another lineman.

  28. By PAUL M. on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

I’M HURTING HERE. . . . SO NO TEAM WANTED TO TRADE FOR OUR #12 SO WE COULD GET PONDER AT, SAY, #25 + ADD A PICK OR TWO?

OK, SO AT #12 WE COULD HAVE J-U-M-P-E-D AT THE PRINCE OR COSTANZA, POUNCY, FAIRLEY, ETC, ETC, WHICH WOULD IMMEDIATELY UPGRADE OUR TEAM.

THEN EITHER TRADE #43 + NEXT YEAR’S PICK TO MOVE DOWN TO #23 – #25 FOR A QB OR GO GET THE HIGHEST RATED PLAYER BY TEAM N-E-E-D!

I LIKE BOTH PONDER & RUDOLPH. THE PROBLEM IS, THE VIKINGS HAVE DRAFTED FROM FEAR RATHER FROM STRENGTH.

  29. By john on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

we’ve upgraded a position of need with this TE hopefully he can block as well as kliensasser and catch as well as shiancoe.perhaps the end of the longest tenured viking, you had a great run jimmy.

  30. By imchinese on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

we dont need dline. we already have robinson, kenndy, and gion to step up. major is oline and cb/ss.

  31. By inspired on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

This surprized me. I thought for sure they would address the offensive line or defensive line. But, it does add another weapon on offense. Maybe the will address the offensive line in free agency.

  32. By LennyViking on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

expect kleinsasser to be moved to half-back, opening an immediate need for TE, plus musgrave will run multiple TE formations when pounding the ball, much like when in ATL. I do agree OL is a tremendous need, but defense isn’t going to be as bad as everyone expects. don’t forget we signed robison and if griffen can stay out of trouble is expected to make a great rotation on the other side of allen. no 3rd pick is no good…

  33. By Rob on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

I thought that they were going to address our needs. With Bowers still on the board it was the logical choice or an Offensive Lineman. We also Need help at Linebacker and Defensive back. I am fine with the Ponder pick but to pass on Bowers and Jenkins is hard to understand. I really don’t think Spielman knows what he is doing. I don’t think Frazier gets much say!

Good pick, and so was Ponder. I been waiting for a good YOUNG QB to lead the vikings for years to come. Im getting a little tired of old Qb’s that almost get us there and leave us with nothing the next year. Ponder is smart and he will be the savior!!!!!!!!

  36. By VikesFan4ever on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

I absolutely love this pick! Our 2 TE’s are both over 30 years old so its a great pick. I’ll agree that we need some youth on the defense but defense is not that big of a need right now. I will say that there were times when they looked terrible especially the Safeties but there is a lot of depth in the later parts of the draft for Safety, Corner and D-line. Right now they commited to Ponder and they are trying to put more pieces around him to make him comfortable. They still have 7 picks left. We’ll have many more opportunities to get defensive players and O-linemen! Just because they won’t be 1st or 2nd rounders doesn’t mean they won’t be good! I honestly feel that they are having a good draft right now the only problem was the reach for Ponder but I believe he will be a good QB in the long-run!

WE MISSED A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY TO PICK UP A GOLD CHIP PLAYER + PONDER! HOW OFTEN DOES A DECENT TEAM GET A #12 PICK?

IF WE COULDN’T GET PONDER, THEN WE COULD HAVE AGGRESSIVELY GONE AFTER ONE OF THE FREE AGENTS.

OK, SO VIKINGS NATION WILL SEE A LOT OF 2 TIGHT END FORMATIONS! BUT WHAT GOOD IS IT IF SULLY, HERRERA & LOADHOLT KEEP GETTING BEAT AT THE POINT OF ATTACK?

  38. By chris on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

i don’t think this pick is dumb at all … vikes just got the best TE in the draft … look for 2-TE sets (like NE does) … TE is more and more becoming a very important position in the nfl … AND … it looks like the vikes HAD to take ponder in round 1 … when all the good QBs have been taken … vikes would have been without a QB answer had they not picked ponder, who out of all the QBs available at #12, is the most nfl-ready … more nfl-ready than locker … it would be good to see vikes take a solid CB next.

  39. By Mizel J on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

Yeah i was amazied by this pick but they made a great point on NFL network. Ya got 2 TE set with AP in the back field that could be really stong. And maybe get our O out of the botom of the NFL like last year. BUT hey were back in a lock out so WHO knows whats going to happen.

  40. By dmp on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

Come on guys Kleinsausser is not the future at TE; besides his blocking capability he’s not a pass catcher for our beloved Vikes. Shank is a stud, but 30. This offense will utilize double TE sets. I love this pick.

  41. By randys55 on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

Since we have no 3rd round pick, the rest of the draft better be going towards both sides of the ball. The offensive and defensive lines!! We need alot of help in alot of areas! McKinne needs competition! We can get more defensive help, because the quality of defensive lineman is deep in this years draft! The offensive line, saftey and cornerbacks are another area of need! Hopefully we will draft well on saturday??!! And hopefully we can get some help thru free agency!!

  42. By GhostRider24 on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

Vikes better be looking at Ahmad Black. I was hoping we’d take Moore, but I can’t complain with the Rudolph pick. Let’s get Black, Pettis, and a couple O-Lineman and we will be gravy. Ponder’s going to be a stud, just watch.

I like both picks,BUT-I really think they gotta work on the O- line(Center/Tackle- both?) secondary,( Safety or solid corner) , then D- line if we lose Ray.
    in draft or free agency.

alright, I like this pick. Great job picking Kyle Rudolph. A really big physical Tightend, who has amazing speed and hands. Those of you bashing this pick are nuts. If you combine him with Shank and Jimmy, they will be awesome. This will also help Adrian Peterson. SKOL VIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AS FAR AS 2- TE SETS, THE NFL HAS BEEN THERE, DONE THAT.

TODAY’S NFL IS ABOUT EXPLOSIVE PLAYS, AND TO HAVE THAT CAPABILITY, TODAY’S DEFENSES MUST BE STRETCHED OUT BOTH HORIZONTALLY & VERTICALLY.

YES, WITH 2 TE SETS WE CAN POUND THE BALL & SCORE. THE PROBLEM IS THAT GREEN BAY CAN SCORE IN 3 PLAYS!!

RUDOLPH IS GREAT BUT WE HAVE A SITUATION WHERE OUR WR’s MIGHT BE HANK BASKET & BERRIAN.

Paul, don’t forget. This draft is deep in receiver talent. I’m sure the Vikings can get some quality receivers. I am a little disappointed we didn’t sure up the secondary with Amuakamara, or Moore, but we have to have faith that frazier and company know what their doing.

  55. By vikings 4-7 on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

I just feel like we wasted a #12 pick on a guy we could have gotten in round 2. There is still Andrew luck next year and a couple of other talented guys that will be just as good as ponder may be. We are going to struggle this year. So what happens if we are in a situation to take a guy like luck. We pass on him, no way. This should have been the year to get quality O line and D line. And we got neither. Then we select a TE who is going to be a nice piece to the offense, but in no way needed for improvements to the team. Our poor choices the last 2 years of the draft are letting the lions get back into this division. We are now the worst team in the central.

His puppy dog enthusiasm for the game will be missed.

I like these picks so far. Ponder and Rudolph were good choices and needed. You have to have the QB and receivers in this league to win. Refer to last years Super bowl winners and Favre 2009. But I agree that now it’s time to pick CB’s, DT, DE, OL, with the rest the picks.( 1 more Sydney Rice wouldn’t hurt either ). Easy on the defense, Frazier and Singletary are going to make sure the Vikes play defense. ( Free Agency will provide opportunities ).

The Vikings would have no vested interest in moving the L.A. to try to establish a market there. Nor, would they destroy the team before moving anyway. I can’t believe the mindset of some people. They are in a rebuilding phase after last year. The same place the Bears where two years ago. Will they go to the Superbowl this year…probably not, but they are building for the future. I wish people could see that. I am more than optimistic that a stadium deal will get done this year – everybody seems to be on board to try to make this work. As I mentioned last winter…It would be nice to see Best Buy, 3M, General Mills, Honeywell, United Health, US Bank, Land O’ Lakes, Hormel Foods, Medtronic, CHS step up and stop leaving everything to Target!

  85. By purplehorn on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

The Vikings must feel like they can keep Ray Edwards with all this DE talent getting drafted. If that is the plan, they will need to pay him or he will just be a body on the line. I forgot that Sass is probably on his way out, so it does make sense to get Rudolph in when he was there still. The Skins could blow the late round Vikings plans up. They will be picking all over.

From what I’ve seen, it looks like Frazier is giving Musgrave the tools he needs to build an effective offense. I think we’re drafting players that wont be on the board by the end of the draft.(mostly offensive players) Frazier knows how to build a defense whether thru the draft or FA! If anything he’ll take defensive players who weren’t drafted and plug them in where and when needed. I won’t judge our front office until we see if we made the right choices. SKOL VIKES!!!

the Vikes need some type of “wildcat” formation with Job Webb, kind of like Vick and the eagle b4 he became a starter, rudolph would be able to block nicely and go out to catch on the play action

We are going to need a receiver to replace Berrian , Baskett and Lewis the kid out of Miami Lenard Hankerson would be a great fit and Ponder seems to have a good working chemistry considering how well the played together in the Senior Bowl. Kinda doubt he will be there for us when our 4th round pick comes around ,but after that it is crucial that the Vikings address the O-line and D-line with the remaining picks and look to free agency to fill the secondary needs.

4 we take the best psy players on the board when we have a darn pick! luckliy we are loaded 100-215

I think we need Oline help, D line help

Looks like the Patriots just sent a message to the Vikings that if you make a trade with them you will get burned. They took Ryan Mallett with the 3rd round pick that we gave up for Randy Moss one more reason to hate the Pat’s!

I think this is actually a stategically sound pic.Ponder is known to be aan accurate short, quick count passer-not a cannon arm.Ideal for a quality tight end.TE DO F@#king block-so it could be seen as a two for one deal.

P.S. Both are smart( quick thinking ) players.I think this combo enhances Toby’s value also.SF built a team of smart players back in the day…i like it.

These two picks wont be busted for cornering women in bahrooms, doing drugs,or running from cops.Build character & elevate mid level players seems to be working in green bay.

should have got raheeme moore. reaching for ponder… very dissapointing draft. i am a vikings fan for life but they sure are making it miserable to be one. id rather have talented kids than “smart” kids. who cares if he has a master degree he needs a haircut and he makes poor decisions on the field.

cant wait to be in full rebuild mode next year. looks like all the vets will be retiring or leaving. pat williams sidney rice shanko winfield will retire. berrian will be cut. sadsadsad

whats randy mosses phone number. bring em back

  101. By Purple Nurple on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

JoshK…with all due respect…you’re a dipsh@t.ALL THESE KIDS HAVE TALENT…or they wouldn’t be in the draft. What separates them talent wise is MARGINAL. What separates them further is SMARTS & CHARACTER.You obviously have never coached at ANY level…and gleen talent from watching Madden video games.

This is a great pick. To all the haters out there saying DE… Realise ray will sign and we still have Brian Robison and Everson Griffon who is untested but was very highly ranked in last years draft. We dont need a a DE at all. If anything we need a DT to replace Pat williams. OL is good. They were very injured last year and I think they will be back to where they were 2 years ago.

  103. By Purple Nurple on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

well said kanuck! We do need to replace the big run stopper monster. The rest we just need to MOTIVATE TO F#$KING PLAY HARD.

  104. By Purple Nurple on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

I have an idea of how to get max value out of Barrian.Don’t trade him…don’t put a free sign on him…put a sign on his neck,$20 bucks…and set him on the curb over night in a bad neighborhood.Right next to the stained sofa…and pray it’s not the sofa left in the morning.

I think we sould believe in our scouting crew. They have spent a lot of time analyzing these players, I agree we need help on the O-Line….D-Line,,,Secondary….etc, but let us believe in these guys….Please

  108. By Derek on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

After getting absolutely no productivity out of last years draft. A little hard to still have faith in these guys. Rudolph is kind of a “could have been worse” pick, he’s solid no doubt. Just seems we switched roles where the 1st round should have been for value and maybe 2nd for needs.

whats everybody’s problem with barrian great reciever . another te i don’t know about safeties r needed and help o-line

You all are talking like ponder is going to start…please…whatever you guys are smok’in i want some…Offense wins games…Defense wins Championships…we need a vet-QB “period” they better go after Donovan in WAS…Ponder aint Flaco or Matt Ryan…should have taken Fairley first…then Ponder….and the TE pick?….nothing against him…im sure hes very good…but that was a joke of a pick…very disappointed in you Minny.

You guys must be new fans. Never watch Vikings draft before, I understand. As an experienced fan, I want to assure you that Rick knows what he is doing and that no matter what it seems like, he is picking some GOOD SHIZA!

TE is best TE in College and of course the draft. On dasher, on rudolph.

QB is best QB in draft. Lets go Ponder, Lets go Vikings!

The Vikes have a fourth round pick, 2 fives, 2 sixes and 2 sevens and still a bunch of solid and/or interesting prospects. LET’S GO!!!
A few guys worth looking at:
-Clint Boling, Andrew Jackson, Zack Hurd (G)
    -Brandon Fusco (C)
-Marcus Cannon, James Brewer, Lee Ziemba, Jason Pinkston (OT)
-Ahmad Black, DeAndre McDaniel, Quinton Carter, Jeron Johnson, Shiloh Keo (S)
-Rashad Carmichael, Brandon Burton, Kendric Burney (CB)
-Pernell McPhee, Greg Romeus, Pierre Allen (DE)
-Ian Williams (another addition to the “Williams-Wall”), Jerrell Powe, Lawrence Guy (DT)
-Ross Homan, Colin McCarthy, Chris Carter (LB)
    -Ronald Johnson, Tondon Doss (WR)

A “tweaner” like Sam Acho worth a look too. (DE/LB)

add to that list of talented players waiting edmund gates pwr.rank 76,4.31 40 from abilene chritian, devon house pwr ranking of 56 4.44 40 6’1″ and youre looking at the fastest wr, and one of the fastest cb’s in this years class

I do not now were we are going to

  116. By sandiamond on Apr 30, 2011 | Reply

Acho and House looking to be gone before us. CB’s are running off the table hard. do or die without a cb on this next pick imo

  117. By Pondering on Apr 30, 2011 | Reply

Ballard! This is great value. Second round DT talent…slid because of recent off the field “issue”…which can be easily addressed.

  118. By Pondering on Apr 30, 2011 | Reply

Now just stock up on good DB and OL prospects. If two of the next six players can be effective future starters, we’ll be OK. There are plenty of examples of late round diamonds-in-the-rough (John Randle? Tom Brady?). Let’s get em!
