With Mallett left on the board, and Nick Farely right there. This is the worst pick in the draft so far. Very disappointing.

    who does that c’mon vikes

  4. By Fear the Spear on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

I realize Vikes fans are going to skeptical of taking Ponder that early but take it from a guy who has watched this kid for three years. He’s going to be a great pro. He graduated in three years so he’s got the mental makeup to succeed. The only question mark will be his durability. He missed both his junior and senior year bowl games due to injury. If he can stay healthy he will take the franchise a long way.

Worst pick of all time. I was embarrassed when we missed our pick 5-6 years ago. Embarrassed when we got williamson. But this takes the cake. Awful, awful job. I thought Chilly was the worse thing to happen to the Vikes, but now I see it’s the whole front office

Not sure Leslie and Speilman dropped the ball on this one. Ponder is a reach at #12. Good team player and does fit our scheme so I can understand the pick. Doesn’t help the team in 2011 though.

I do question the pick but I do know the kid is intelligent so here’s hoping his future is bright w/ us. Skol Vikings!!!

What are the vikings thinking with this pick, Mallet and Dalton still on the board and we take Ponder…. Being a lifetime viking fan and how we usually draft this has got to be the biggest disappointment I have ever had with any of our drafts. Even over williamson and his huge contract we gave him. I hope to god that this guy is trade bait, if not our draft needs to be an F- already.

  42. By John on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

Unbelievable! I could have lived with Mallet. At least he had the size and a cannon for an arm. But Ponder? They could have waited until the 4th round and probably gotten him. The only thing that’ll make this pick even dumber is if they try and bring Mcnabb in. Freakin’ morons!! Horrible!

  43. By Woodboat on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

So, I see Frazier didn’t waste any time driving the first nail in his coffin. Ponder… a guy with durability issues behind a line that can’t stop anybody. With Top notch OTs and Prince Am…. (not even going to try to spell his name) on the board, and you take a late 2nd rounder with the 12th pick. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised… a sub par defensive coordinator turned head coach is bound to make these kind of decisions. Goodbye, Mr. Rice, and good luck to you whereever you land. I imagine you’ll be looking for a QB that can throw the ball down the field at a speed faster than you can run.

  44. By Calim on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

Ok, so maybe Ponder is going to be a great player. But why would the Vikings pass on players like Prince at the 12th pick when Ponder would quite likely reach the 2nd round ? I believe the Vikings should at least have traded down, as I don’t see many teams trying to draft Ponder in the 1st round…
I was pretty psyched when I saw the players available at 12, but right now, I’m quite skeptical.

  45. By Justin on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

Wow… We could have got him or Mallet in the 2nd round.. Why not take Prince, or Bowers or Fairley at 12? Fan nation gave us an F grade….. We will finish last in the North for the next 3 years

What a joke! I do like Ponder, but I figured we could get him in the second round. I’m crying on the inside now watching all of these better players come off of the board that we’re missing out on. I thought Chilly was the problem but after last year’s mess of a draft and this BIG reach for a QB, I think Rick Spielman is next to go.

  65. By Mike B on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

I think there needs to be some explaination of this pick I agree with QB but there were better QBs on the board. This pick doesn’t make sense unless you are bringing in an older vet to train him up. Lack of arm strength is a big concern too. I have to agree with the rest why pick him in the first round as he would be there in the second. I think the Vikings owe the fan base and explanation of this pick.

  66. By viking1 on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

I don’t mind the pick nice job vikings staff you got a qb the most glaring need, I wanted mallett but ponder is a good qb, if we were going to wait until 2nd round all the qb’s will be gone. Ponder is from a big school so that helps and is smart. I’m happy the vikings went for the most pressing need, it was a little high but the vikings had no choice they would of been all off the board by second round.

  67. By Robbie W on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

Seriously Im almost ready to support the lions over this nonsense! at least they choose good quarter backs in the draft The only way this guy is gonna work is if we have a strong veteran to show him the light and i have a feeling joe webb doesnt qualify….DUMB PICK!!! Woodboat has it right, We need to get the first pick in next years draft. Leslie is close with the Lynx and they got it right. It is the ONLY thing that makes sense. Does Williamson have a brother that we can draft at #2?

  71. By Chris on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

On the bright side atleast we will get Andrew Luck next year

  72. By KansasViking on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

Honestly…. this is a bit of a reach, I’ll agree with that. I will say though, that out of all of the quarterbacks, this is the one that I wanted us to take. Only, y’know, in the second round. I do believe Ponder is the best quarterback in the draft to build a franchise around, but he’s not going to be able to come in and make a difference right away. And he shouldn’t even have the opportunity. Quarterbacks need to sit out a year or two before even playing, with very rare exceptions given to the Brady’s and Manning’s of the world. But don’t get to upset over this pick. In two years, this guy will step in and be there for the next 10 to 15. I’d bet my job on it.

  73. By used2purplefailure on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

On the bright side, at least he’ll be playing for the L.A. Vikings and not MN. Heres to hoping we get an expansion team!

how many times do we see first rounders fall quite a bit through there career, it wont make a difference, id take him over cam newton, whose to say this kid wouldnt be taken by any of these teams n he would become a starter in 2 yrs somwhere n torch the league then ud all be crying like you are now for them not taking him, we have 8 more picks plus probbaly a FA pickup later this year chill

  77. By viking1 on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

People will disagree but I’m happy the vikings got a qb finally I thought they were going to ignore the position, frazier was serious about wanting a qb. Musgrave will make ponder better.

It doesn’t take a genius to know that was a dumb pick at No. 12?!?!? And I as well well like Ponder think he has great potential. What I don’t understand is WHY DON’T WE TRADE BACK???? Every team, minus WAS with many other needs on the board, IS SET ON QB so what is the deal front office. SPEILMAN WHAT ARE YOU DOING

  80. By Tyler on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

You guys can calm down. It’s not the end of the world. Is it a bit of a reach? It sure seems that way. But that doesnt mean he wont be the perfect fit for our organization. I for one hope he is, even if he went earlier than he should have. ESPN said we tried and failed to trade down, so it wasnt everrrything we were looking for

  81. By Jonny M on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

I know we got the QB coach from Atlanta. I hope Ponder is his guy. I am willing to give them and the Vikings a chance to prove this pick wasn’t the drastic over-reach that it looks like. So here is to a great 2011

  82. By VKing56 on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

If they could not pull a trade to get out of that pick they should have taken the best player out there ( Nick.F, Price, any OL, ect,,,,) not a guy who should have been a 3rd round pick. Well lets hope it works out like the last time we took a FSU QB good old Brad Johnson.

  83. By Derek on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

Life time vikings fan, after last year thought it couldnt get any worse. We get set back 4 years and help the lions form one of the best defensive lines for years to come. Not the way for Leslie to start out his career.

alright Frazier and the Vikings draft team are dumb, stupid, moronic, and oh did I mention stupid? They had Prince Amukamara, Robert Quin, Pouncy, and a few other players. They drafted for need, not best player available and this will now set the Vikings back another year. Thanks for being stupid Vikings!!!!!!!!!

You have to be kidding me right, at number 12. I am having flash backs to Troy Williamson. Do you think that he is going to learn under McNabb or Kolb? What a waste of a pick, so many better players could have been taken. And you guys want US to build a stadium for YOU, you don’t have my vote.

Hey, if Ponder is ALIVE to WATCH the next 3 superbowls, I’ll be amazed, Z. If he truly is Chad Penningtonlike (slow of foot, fragile, with a weak arm….) he is going to be in traction by the trade deadline. Our O-Line SUCKS!!! Did you WATCH Favre dodging guys in the backfield the last two years?!?! Well, here’s hoping Joe Webb can impress the new OC enough to stay on the field. At least he can move and throw the ball down the field. I get the feeling he’ll get his chance to play regardless, because Ponder is going to break.

Enjoy looking up at the rest of the division for years to come, fellow Vikings fans. Pathetic.

Come on guys…lets quit the whining. The front office personnel have those jobs for a reason. If any of us was better we’d be doing the choosing. Just saying. Spielman/Frazier, they are not stupid men. There was a reason for the pick and just because we don’t know it, we can’t just blindly call stupid…This year is already strange just with the lockout, judges ruling, no OTA’s, now OTA’s…and tomorrow more rules come out regarding what the teams and players can do or not do. Its a strange year…lets just ride it out, give the kid the support he is going to need and see what happens. I’d hate to be Ponder, reading any of this..cut the team some slack and lets rally behind this kid. Hes going to need the support (considering TJ is his “mentor” right now). Welcome him, take him in..we can’t change it, whining doesn’t help, so be true Vike fans and get on the bus

You can say hey what do we know we dont work for pro teams, well all those years with the raiders picks that were terrible (heyward bay), dolphins (ginn), troy williamson, sometimes your average guy knows that it is a reach and a horrible pick for where they are picking at. And the Ponder pick screams terrible for this high.

McNabb, Kolb, Dalton even. You messed up. Daquan Bowers was still there, Nick Fairley was sitting there as well. Good luck selling this to your fans.

You guys have to realize that we are just fans. We haven’t been able to talk to any of these guys face to face, so there is NO reason to be making assumptions. I’m putting my trust in Spielman and Frazier because they obviously saw something in Ponder, that no other NFL team had seen, and that’s exciting for me as it should be for all of you out there who are true Vikings fans. Bill Musgrave will be able to groom this guy just like he did so with Matt Ryan down in Atlanta. Yes, you may have wanted some big name guy because you see their name on ESPN all the time instead of Ponder’s. But again, WE don’t see these players face to face. Frazier and Spielman have, put your trust in them Vikings fans.

So, our O-Line is filthy bad, the Williams Wall is out for 4 games, an old DB and one coming back from a second ACL, and now Ponder. I think the vikes are intentionally trying to have a bad season so we won’t pay for a new stadium, so they can be sold and move to LA.

I think ponder is a kid with good potential, but really, at 12. They probably could have got him in the second round, and have gotten a player with 12 that could help now. I hope the front office knows something we all do not know, but this could be a disastrous pick, and make the team look dumb, again. Skol Vikings

Ziggy, you got rid of the head coach your 1/2 way there, not clear out the front office. What a bunch of morons who aren’t worth their weight in water. Ever since Randy Moss they’ve tried every year to find that diamond in the rought or tried to catch lightening in a bottle. Since then, many a good player has slipped through our grasps. This QB isn’t going to be anything for the Vikings or anyone else in the NFL. You could have got a clipboard holder like this in the 5th round. Blow me off all you want, but your the a-holes driving a once historic franchise right into the ground.

What are you people talking about Mallett for? He is the worst QB prospect in this draft. He is the next Ryan Leaf and I agree Ponder was a reach but he has the best intangibles (which is a must for a NFL QB) and he has very good accuracy.

You can’t REALLY think our team is going to be able to keep him healthy, right? WE HAVE NO O-LINE!!! Man there is some serious hate on here tonight. First of all…. Mallet’s a head case. He’s had so many problems, I think he’s destined for Oakland. Yes Oakland.
Second of all, you all wanted your QB in a weak QB draft. Well, here he is. An accurate thrower who can limit turnovers, and we still have wild cat QB Webb.
Thirdly, I think our D-line is fine. I just want to see more playing time for Evans and Kennedy and such, because quite frankly, they’ve earned it. I would be more upset if we picked ANOTHER CB.
3.a Give Chris Cook a chance to get healthy this season…. sheesh.

We could have taken a cb(not many good ones around) that was rated either 1 or 2, gone into the second round and still picked up a good d-line or o-line guy(a lot of these guys around). Now we have TJ, Rhett B, a wide receiver by the name of Joe Webb for qb’s. Now we’ve added a 4th guy that was rated about 47th in the draft. This is just another embarrassment. Next year all kinds of qbs. I waited for weeks to see us get some help. We are no better off now than when we started.

Washington LOVED Ponder and thought they could trade the 10 pick to someone who wanted Gabbert and then pick Ponder up @16. If the front office liked Ponder much better than Dalton (and its obvious they did) then they had to take him at 12…they knew he wouldn’t fall past Washington and were given a gift when Washington traded down.

For one thing, give the guy a chance, he just may be what the team needs. Yes, the O line needs work, but we habitually have not had a franchise quarterback since Culpepper. Only time will tell as ponder is extremely intelligent and has many intangibles which cannot be coached. Go Vikes!!!

IF Ponder produces this year.. and this year meaning NOW.. then this pick is justicified! BUT seriously Vikings front office fails to produce quality for the #12pick!! Ponder was NOT a rated top 20 player! wasnt even a top 5 in QB.. With this list of players available that ALOT of teams would love… N. Fairley, P. Amukamara, R. Quinn, even Da ‘quan Bowers!! HOW Did the front office not get a trade done to move down to 19-22 where picking PONDER and getting a 3rd rounder would not be considered a sh8t bust draft move!!… Just disappointed to see lack of reason.. If Ponder produces I’ll eat my words!.. I perferred Ryan Mallet or Andy Dalton over Chris Ponder… :*( If this draft is as bad as 2005 time for Front office heads to roll!!! Wink Hint Wink to you Mr Ziggy Wolfe. Only smart GMs + Front offices lead teams to Super Bowls.. Look across our MN/Wis boarder to see a prime example!.. GOOD luck Ponder! Go Vikings!

  253. By Pel40 on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

By the way, its obvious most of the people on here get their information from that idiot Mel Kiper and Mike Mayock. Those two are proving to have NO CLUE. All week long there were rumors that Ponder was moving UP even higher in the 1st round. The people who actually KNOW things have known for a few weeks that Ponder wasn’t going to drop lower than #34 (Buffalo wanted him in the top of the 2nd).

I think if Washington had taken Gabbert, we would’ve taken Fairley and then traded back into the 1st round to take Ponder. But with Washington sitting at 16, we knew we had to take our man at 12, and its clear that Ponder was judged to be a much better option than Mallet and Dalton. Just because ESPN didn’t think so, doesn’t mean they were right.

  254. By jimthebassman on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

I was vry surprised that they picked him so high, but I’m sure that Washington would have picked him if he was still there. He does look really good in all the clips that I saw of him, and he does have the right kind of play to play in the type of offens the vikings have.HE WAS the most accurate QB at the combines and proved that he was very quick, which he will need to be considering the type of offensive line that the vikings have.I just would of liked to see them pick a top CB or an offensive lineman, something that we really need, but this could turn out to be a great pick, as long as he don’t get hurt.

  255. By Puner on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

Quite a reach for Ponder. would have loved to see Nick Fairly, Prince Amukamara, Robert Quinn or Mike Pouncey. Any one of those players would have fulfilled a need and improved the team. Ponder doesn’t. However, he does put the vikings closer to Andrew Luck next season!

For those of you throwing a fit about the selection of Ponder; you need to relax. The kid is smarter than any QB in the draft, his arm strength is far and away better than what he is getting credit for (see UF game this year), and he is tough as nails. He played in a complex, pro-style offense so he is NFL ready. He will win the vikings a lot of games.

Wow unreal, did’nt think anyone would see what i have seen, this guy is a machine, he averages 250-300 yards a game and had 20 td and only 8 picks last year comming off an injury, prior to that he was top of all the charts, and an amaizing QB, he was the best QB florida ever had, and is not a quitter, he was hert in 2010 from making a tackel. have hope boys, dicitions made, and i have to believe after what i know about this kid and Rick S., this was a steal steal, Congrats to the Vikings. 264. By Justin F on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

It’s very clear people don’t understand the future that the Vikings face. GB started developing Aaron Rogers 6 years ago and it took them, what 3 years to do it? The Lions have been developing Stafford for several years and he’s showing great improvement. Can’t say anything about the Bears as they just got Cutler in the 2010 offseason.

My point is that the Vikings WILL develop Ponder over a course of time and try tio mold him and Webb into franchise QBs. Most of you people here are simply ignoring the bigger picture here and rushing into premature judgment. Give them the time to help this kid become a good QB. STOP ACTING LIKE 15 YEAR OLDS.

Who among us thought that the Vikes were going somewhere in 2011. So you take a chance on a QB first round pick, so what!!? Our offensive line is old, while our defense is not quite beyond their peak. If we don’t go for a QB, then we should have improved the O line. But the fact is we should have brought along a QB last year. The Favre/Moss/Childress fiasco cost us a year when we could have been developing a QB. We have to face facts, our window to the Super Bowl closed two years ago. We must rebuild, now. Hope they pick some O linemen in the remaining draft.

There is no way the Vikes are going to bring a veteran QB in here. This guy or Joey Webb will be the future of the Vikes – like it or not. If the Vikings were going to bring in a veteran QB they would have done some patch work on their O-Line or their secondary on this pick. This is the guy. I can honestly say I trust Musgrave’s judgement – he’s one of the best. Ponder is a sharp kid and he can spin it. I truly wonder if Jacksonville is any happier with their pick at 10. In Ponder’s defense, had he had some help at Florida State and not had to deal with the Bowden slide he very well could have been prime-time. I don’t the the Chad Pennington comment Kiper made is accurate. He reminds me more of a Flacco type QB.

Weak arm and injury prone. With the viking O-line he will play one down and then ride the bench for 15 years. If they could not trade they could have selected a way better pick.

These guys aren’t dumb (Musgrave, Spielman and etc.). They know what they are doing. It’s the same reason Dalton is still on the wire. Looking at the short film that was posted earlier Ponder looks like he’s blowing Gabbert out of the water. At one point ESPN had Cam and Gabbert at 1 & 2 and actually had Gabbert going higher than Cam after the NFL combine. So in short…where they had him is a bunch of BS – these guys obviously see something in this kid. Anything should be better than last year. This really should be a time of optimism.

There is no way that Ponder would have been there through the second round. The top 7 QBs will be gone by the 12th pick of the 2nd round (Vikes pick). Ponder and Dalton will be good smart QBs and will be ready to play before Kaepernick. Ryan Mallett is the next Ryan Leaf. There is no doubt the Vikes tried to trade back in the 1st to pick up Ponder later in the first and get a third round pick, but couldn’t get it done. The Vikes need 2 QBs and had to pull the trigger now or wait until the fourth or fifth and get somebody like Nathan Enderle or Pat Devlin. This will not be a bust pick, worst pick of all time, and all the other nonsense being posted.

I would have preferred Prince Amukamara or Fairley. That being said at lot of people had Ponder rated as the 4th best QB and he was the 4th QB drafted. This guy can play and I think he will play well if doesn’t get injured. If they going plug him in as the starter they need to move Webb to WR. That way Ponder has someone to throw to plus then they could bring Webb in to run the Wildcat. Obviously they had their sites on this guy from the beginning and they should have traded down a few picks and got back the 3rd rounder wasted on the Moss trade.

Locker is a project that we do not have the time to take on, Gabbert couldn’t hang in the NFC north – it would be the same situation the Lions face with Mathew Stafford. Mallet is 3 feet away from a psych ward, Dalton’s would have been decent but seems like he needs to grow-up still. I actually think Ponder is a decent pick. He’s got some great studs to throw to in Rice, Harvin and Shank, and a great back. I would really like to see them make some power moves later on, for their secondary and O-Line.

This will be interesting with Joe Webb, I wonder if they put him in at Wide Out with Sidney on the fence? Nothing against Joe Webb at QB, I just think his success is due to his athleticism, not necessarily his QB attributes.

Joe’s got some pretty crazy hops though (did you watch that video of him at winter park last year hurdling those step pads?). I wouldn’t be surprised to see him pull down the deep ball much like Rice ’09 (and the end of ’10 I guess). I’m sure they’ll have the QB open to competition as Frazier has already alluded to, I guess I’m just pumped w/ Ponder. Let the best QB win obviously.

I guess it seems like people really bought into the hype this year for the QB class (judging on their response to the #12 pick). I just didn’t ever really get too excited about any one guy, no one stood out to me as THEE shining star. Definitely happy we are bringing someone who appears to be the type of guy you want on your team. Seems like Ponder could be a leader.

The Vikes will pick Mallet in the 2nd round. Then they will institute a rotation system where they rotate all 3 quarterbacks (SpiderWebb, GoPonder, Mallethead). Before each game the quarterbacks will play rock paper sissors to determine what down they will play.

It’s all about the talent we passed up to pick this QB that won’t be ready for a year or so. Fairley, Prince, Jordan and a few others would have contributed right away this year like first rounders should. IF we already had that veteran QB in place for Ponder to sit behind and learn, then it would be a different story. I have no doubt the Vikes will go out and find a veteran QB, but they could have waited until next year to find that QB of the future. I’m very disappointed in the Vikings front office… If Ponder ends up rocking it this year, then I’ll eat my words, but I severely doubt that will happen.

LOL 98 yd td not impressive at all. It was way under thrown. His receiver had his man beat (probably because he got tripped up a little) and he had to wait for the ball to get to him. It was so under thrown that the corner almost caught up to his receiver even though the cb slipped! I don’t think he is a franchise qb. I think he is smart, and can make good short throws(with little zip), but he’s a decent starter at best much like Jon kitna or those other decent vets that float around in the nfl team to team.

Ponder is injury prone and weak armed he cant and wont play well at the speed and level of the NFL, hence why he only had a 6.5 analysis grade in the draft compared to Mallet’s 7.4.

i’m not upset that they picked a Ponder, i knew they would at some point but to take a 2nd round QB in the first round is a waste. There are so many positions that could have been addressed and esp. in the o-line, none of our QB’s will have time to throw if we dont get better on the line. Plus i hope to heaven that they can keep Sidney or our WR core is going to stuggle.

I think that Ponder was the best option for QB (aside from Kaepernick, but as a Nevada student, I am biased). Now we need to pick up one of the DE’s that this draft has so many of, as well as one or to Offensive Linemen. Ponder’s judgment will prove to be vital and I think that we can do a lot of good work. YEAH.

I didnt think they would even take a qb early, I thought webb and a veteran pickup was the plan. Webb could still be developed, but they must have other plans. Ponder would not be available in the 2nd round, the skins wanted him.

Mallett is terrible. Arm strength without accuracy or mobility makes you Jamarcus Russel/Ryan Leaf. I am a vikes fan in Florida and the kid is good. I know you dont see a lot of him, but he is fast, good leader, decent arm strength, and above average accuracy. He will do great in play action. Just give the kid a chance. He is very similar to Andy Dalton, but a better leader and played in a truer NFL system.

Alot of coaches are too afraid to throw a rookie qb in the game because they will make mistakes, of course they will just like any franchise qb over time comfort will kick in and he will get the flow going.

The more film I watch on Ponder, the more I like him. Not to mention his outstanding work ethic, and the fact that he was in a pro style offense in FSU. He is exactly what Musgrave was looking for.

He made the most sense for the Vikings @ 12, I totally understand it now. The ONLY thing that Ponder doesn’t have that the other QB’s of his supposed class have, is HYPE. That is probably the number one reason why everyone is disappointed…there wasn’t much HYPE on Ponder.

Well, he has great stats, is super intelligent, is a great decision maker, and will be fantastic for our west coast system once we get the ball rolling.

I think the issue is that Ponder wasn’t rated high in the draft and possibily we could have picked him up in second round (I say possibly, but sounds as if the Redskins were trading down to pick him). Maybe the other so called experts are wrong and the Vikings are right. I think there is room here to question and complain about the pick. I don’t reflect it on the player but who was the best player that was there at 12. Obviously the Vikings had made up their mind about what QBs were on their list. That’s fine no matter who is the QB we will be cheering for a win. Have a Nice Day

Remember, I think it was the last game of the season when Webb missed a wide open receiver on the left sideline who had gotten by the corner and was wide open for a soft easy to catch ball that you or I could hit. Webb over threw him by five yards and in the post game interview said, that sometimes the hardest throws are to guys wide open? That’s your BIG difference between Webb and Ponder. When a guys wide open, trust me, thats as easy as it gets!!

Yeah, I was SHOCKED that we didn’t choose Nick Fairley at 12…trust me. Especially seeing that the WIlliams wall will be suspended, and Pat willaims may not be a Viking once FA hits.

We’re all forgetting the big picture…Andrew Luck next year! We have to suck really bad this year, maybe bring Favre back for one more season or get McNabb to lose us two extra games this year. Let Sidney Rice walk, hit Percy in the head a few times, go tanya harding on AP, match Winfield on the opponent’s fastest guy, play prevent defence on every down, and throw to berrian every time. Oh, and lets get that Troy Williamson guy back, he’s a proven winner…at least by Charlie Sheen’s definition. And we should recruit Dennis Green and Mike Tice back to help with the remainder of the draft. We can do it…yes we can!

i think he’s a perfect fit!!! have some faith you guys! Frazier and Speilman wouldnt pick him without knowing what they were getting! He shows a lot of promise and is a proven leader on and off the feild, and i would rather have my mind at ease knowing he doesnt have any off the feild issues like Mallet does. This is a good solid pick. Frazier,Musgrave and the crew are going to develope him into something great! And really for some of you so called fans? Giving up your fanship over a draft pick? That makes Raider fans look that much better and loyal for that matter! SKOL VIKES!!!!!

The Vikings front office has no negotiating skills…no management skills…no PR skills (misleading fans prior to draft). Every year, SMARTER teams like NE, Philly, GB are able to maneuver for extra picks or better draft positions relative to their needs….and the Vikings are left holding their nuts wondering what happened.

Regardless of whether Ponder works out (and I really hope he does), it is OBVIOUS to everyone around the NFL that this was a poorly managed first round.

Ryan Mallet will be a bust. He will be forgotten a year from now. The only thing he has is an arm. You don’t need a rocket arm to be a good qb. It helps, but really you don’t need a rocket arm. If you can put the ball where you need to, that’s all that matters. Not saying you don’t good arm strength. Just needs to good enough to put the ball where it needs to be placed. Ryan mallet is a giant sitting duck who needs 5 secs to make a good decision. Seriously, there were linemen in the draft who ran better 40′s. Watch some of his games and you’ll notice that he gets very good protection. Throw in his attitude and he’s pretty much just another guy with a cannon for an arm.

  490. By DuaneN on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

Looked like Gabbert was gonna fall to us, then the trade happened and you knew he was gone.

Ponder seems to have everything except the arm. Hope it works out. Would have been nice to trade down, but it didn’t happen. At least we didn’t pick Newton #1. Now that is a wasted pick.

  491. By Skyking on Apr 29, 2011 | Reply

I agree that Ponder is going to be better than Webb. I just don’t think he is going to be so much of an upgrade that we needed to burn our 1st round pick to get him. Obviously team management believes otherwise and I hope they are right. We could have signed a QB in FA and probably will anyway. I don’t like taking QB’s at all in the 1st round it’s too much of a risk. If your going to have a 1st round QB on your team get them as FA or in a trade after they proven themselves.I like Ponder and if he was there in the second round great take him. But this year we missed the opportunity once again too draft a top notch corner. Top notch corners are hard to come by and generally not available outside the 1st round. The problem for the Vikings isn’t that the QB’s are missing wide open receivers its that the other teams receivers are wide open. There were 2 top level corners available this year and we could have gotten one of them. Considering the looming D line suspensions and the age of Pat Williams reloading the D line with Fairley would have been a good option too. I am ok with the Ponder selection I just think we could have done better.

COME ON! Ponder??!!! I’m still pondering that one. I agree with the sentiment of most on here(400 something comments) Bad choice here at best. Not any QB at #12 available was worth the chance here other than Mallet. Ponder will be a back up to Webb if there is a season this year. Passing on Prince will show on how many TDs vikes give up thru the air. And getting to watch AP struggle to get to the line of scrimmage will be something great to watch. AGAIN!!! Oline! Oline! Oline!!!! Leslie you and the front office might not have made the worst choice, but you have not helped the team in any measurable way with Ponder.

I’ll admit that when I heard we drafted Ponder was I confused as to way we wasted our pick on him when Kaepernick and others were up there. But from what I’ve seen is that they might possibly be preparing to get Hasselbeck thru FA. And implement an offense that Helmgren had set up while Shaun Alexander and Hasselbeck were together. Either way I see Ponder as an experiment that will need time. We still have Webb who could also be a talented QB if he’s coached well and mentored by a veteran, 1 year under Favre and maybe a 1 year or 2 under Hasselbeck. Taking Ponder at 12 may have been a waste but we won’t know that until the season has been played out.

No way he can step in immediately and play either. Absolutely thought they would’ve traded down once Gabbert left the board. Could be in for a very long year with our QB issues and looking like Rice isn’t coming back. This pick might not help the Rice situation. Should only take a QB if someone they really wanted, not just because we need one. Could of easily stuck with our current mediocre QB’s, bombed next year for high draft pick in 2012. Will continue following the Vikes no matter what, fan since I was 5.

We need 3 QBs on this roster. Ponder and Webb have completely different skill sets. A veteran QB would also add an additional/different dimension. We may need this type of mix; spread the risk, see what develops. There’s no easy solution here. Let’s give them a chance to figure in out. GO VIKES!

To all you so-called Vikings fans who say you are going to another team because of a draft pick….GO!!!! You were not the true Vikings fan in the 1st place!!!

Seriously guys, watch Ponder’s highlights, realize that those Clemson, UNC, and BC passing defenses were incredibly strong. That BYU team they keep showing, shut down Bradford for the first half he played. Only highlight opponent you can ignore is GT (they’re defense is bad). I would also like to point out the scores in all these highlights. In almost every one of them you’ll notice that Ponder is fighting back from a deficit (their defense was terrible). Though that UF team couldnt do anything, they had a renowned passing D that Ponder tore apart. Seriously, this kid’s the real deal. watch the TAPES

I too was shocked at the Ponder decision but after listening to Mallock, Mariucci, Mora Jr. and a couple Miami Hurricane fans, I have to admit I’m intrigued. Doesn’t sound like Ponder would have been there for the vikes in rd. 2 and Musgrave really likes the guy. Injury prone, yes but injuries are part of the game for everybody. Wasn’t AP somewhat injury prone in college? If the McNabb rumor is true, I can live with McNabb, Ponder and Webb as the 3 qbs on the roster. Though I’d rather have had McNabb about 4 years earlier. Actually, taking the TE in rd. 2 was more puzzling to me. Realize he was one of best left on the board but does the vikings front office not realize this defense is not what it was 3 or 4 years ago? next pick – Robert Sands out of WV please. (yes, I’m biased.) Then get best d lineman and best olineman on the board.
