Mild Surprise Goes To Huge Surprise

Posted by Mike Wobschall on April 28, 2011 – 6:48 pm

San Francisco gave us a mild surprise by taking DE Aldon Smith at #7 instead of QB Blaine Gabbert. But the Tennessee Titans gave us a huge surprise at #8.

They took a QB, but not the QB everyone thought would go 2nd after Cam Newton. They took Jake Locker, providing a huge surprise. The slide for Cam Newton continues. Something tells me Dallas, who picks next, has their phones ringing off the hook.

More to come shortly!

I give up. We need a safety/cb, won’t get a decent one later, a decent tackle is availabe, won’t get a decent one later, great players available and we take a Pounder. I thought maybe we finally got a decent coach. What a dud.

  12. By Mike B on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

I think that was a coaches pick. They wanted hard working with good character and that’s what they got.

Ponder?? Leave it up to the vikings to pick someone that would at best been a 3rd rounder.

I REALLY WISH THIS TEAM WOULD JUST MOVE…..SO I COULD WASH MY HANDS OF THIS FRANCHISE!

  29. By Dave on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

This has to be a move that meets Viking history… trade for a QB with a year or two left. We haven’t developed a young QB in decades, but for God’s sake Nick Fairley was right there for the taking!!!!!!

  30. By trust on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

Gotta trust the organization guys! They see something in him, they are the pros, but rick spielmans job is on the line now too. We’ll see in two years, maybe we get McNabb. We can still get a good DT, DE, OLB in the second round.

  31. By Purpletanker on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy? So many more out there and we should have waited for 2nd pick for a QB.

  44. By dvyne_vike on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

All I’m saying is that we couldve gotten a better player in the first round and waited to pick up ponder in the second if they really wanted him

  45. By Brian on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

Really? Did they not learn anything with the Adrian Peterson draft. Take the best player available instead of reaching like Detroit used to do every year at skill positions. Just because you didn’t get the quarterback you wanted, don’t just draft a player to fill the position. At the very least, trade down and get the third round pick you are lacking this year. Oh yeah, it worked really well taking Tavaris Jackson without trading down, because he was well worth it.

I think the Redskins traded their Number 10 pick so the Vikings would take Ponder and then trade him to Washington for McNab.

I am absolutely shocked by this pick. This is a big time reach. They could have traded down twice and stil could have gotten Ponder.I used to think Spielman was a good football man but this pick and most of last years draft is turning me into a non believer.

  49. By Scott on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

Well I do agree that the Vikings did surprise once again. Defense wins championships. I know they needed a QB but I think they could have gotten Ponder with the 43rd pick.
The coach must have thought this was a player he could not pass on. They better do better on the 43rd pick or it could be long season.

  50. By Laura on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

I am shocked! I never even heard of Ponder.

But I have to say, I think I’m more shocked at the fans. Way to be supportive people!

With free agency opening up, MN might grab a veteran, and mold ponder and webb the way they need too. Don’t expect an amazing season this year. With a whole new set of coaches there are going to be a lot of changes. We might not always agree on everything they do, but

If you can’t support your team, why are you a fan at all?

Terrible pick. THE GUY HAD SEASON-ENDING SHOULDER SURGERY BUT 2 YEARS AGO!!! I thought we had defensive-minded coach? Defense wins championships – should have picked a CB/DT/DE. Not a 2nd round QB who will not be ready for 2-3 years. Aauugghh……can’t even turn to the Twins for relief from this situation.

I agree I think their first two picks are for positioning For free agency trades But for all the haters I am going to be sitting Quietly smiling If Ponder just picks up the ball and runs with it..

good thing we didn’t reach for Colt McCoy in the 2nd last year or gotten him in the 3rd. I actually kinda blame this on Chilly. I wanted McCoy last year and now this… Wow, hate this pick. could have taken Fairley, Prince, Bowers, Pouncey Go Browns…this sucks

  56. By dont_be_a_hater on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

Just because you guys have never heard of Ponder doesn’t make him the worst QB and the worst pick ever. Ponder got the distinct fortune of playng for Bobby Bowden in the twilight of his career.

  57. By Brian on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

Did they even show the Vikings giving him a jersey? Was he even at the draft? This sounds like another Demetrius Underwood. Did they consult with the Timberwolves on this draft? The jury is still out on the Vikings first pick from last year Chris Cook, but at least they traded down, even though they did give Detroit Javid Best. Heads need to roll if this doesn’t pan out — and I’m talking across the board.

  58. By Brian on Apr 28, 2011 | Reply

The worst part about this is that Chicago and Green Bay are going to improve their teams more operating from the bottom of the first round, not the 12th pick. Scary!

Ponder is a great pick , the only negative is he’s had injuries but wasn’t that the same as our RB . Hes a pocket passer who is smart and doesnt make bad decisions. Played in the SEC and had a 63% comp this year 68% last .

I thought I would bring you guys some comfort in this time of concern. Im an avid Nole and have been following them from the time I watched Prime Time live against Lousiana Tech when Doak Camble was called the Erector Set.. mid way through St Bobby’s rein at FSU.. Ponders first action was on the road against VT after whatshisface went down with an injury.. I watched this game at a bar in Tampa and after we fell just short I told my friends that this redshirt freshman was a star in the making…. He brought us back in that game and by his Jr year was averaging over 300 yards a game.. He is EXACTLY what you need. FSU fans love him and you will too with time. Injuries set him back big time this year.. He checked out wello after and was the Senior Bowl MVP for a reason… he is a winner and will make you proud.. You may have lost some casual fans with this pick but you gained a new one in me..

There is a reason the Patriots are great organization– they don’t reach to fill a position. Instead they stockpile draft picks, knowing that it is basically a numbers game. The Vikings are notoriously bad in playing the draft and taking advantage of other team’s needs. I don’t have a problem with Ponder, I have a problem of where he was taken. If for some reason you traded down and someone took him, would the draft be a failure? Can you honestly say that this was the player you couldn’t live without?

Watched the press conferences and feel much better about this pick. Solid character and good qb skills, plus he is brilliant. BTW, Gruden is a pompous guy who thinks he is the all time greatest qb evaluator, but he is not. A lot of the the qb rankings are built on hype and snowball.

Will prove to be a good pick. Biggest asset will be his ability to be smart with the ball and utilize percy, rice and peterson. He is not a selfish guy and makes good decisions.

Exactly, VikingReon! This is WEST COAST offense that does not rely on chucking the ball 50 yards down the field. A smart, hard working QB is exactly what the Vikings need. Hopefully they have it with Ponder.

it’s funny how spielman says they looked to trade down but didn’t want to go as far back as 17 or 18. You could have traded down 3 times and stockpiled picks to get your qb next year while getting younger at all positions. what a jackwagon. who knows if the kid will be good. but he could have been average and still been a good pick if you got a supporting cast by taking him later. duh

This Kid is good. If it wasn’t for his arm surgery he would have easily been before Luck. Peterson fell, Vikings got him. Nobody wanted Harvin because of some pot smoking, Vikings got him. Initially I was angry that the Vikes could not trade down and get Ponder or Dalton later. But we are not in the war room and do not know all. Ponder and Dalton were targeted because they are smart, of good character, high percentage passers that win ball games. Did they pull the trigger soon, perhaps but give the man a chance before you hate. And to all of you haters out there go root for some classless organization that suits your infantile antics. We don’t need your infection.

to be honest, i was a little bit disappointed we didnt draft a Defensive player/OL. but looking at the highlights, he did played pretty good which reminded me of a young Brett Favre / Joe Montana. i just hope he does not have any injuries, but we got Joe Webb for that so were good, reminds me of Joe Montana/Steve Young

In addition, now that we have two viable options at qb and the best rb in the game as well as talent at the other offensive skill positions all that needs to be done now is for the o=line to be fixed and guess what we are competitive again. Our defense outside of safety is good enough to compete, perhaps give a good coach and his staff some time to shine. We have had duds as head coaches since Bud Grant left (Burns was ok) Frazier will get us a superbowl win if he gets some support from the fanbase. So once again haters, the door is open, see ya.

I was suprised to. But now looking over all the things he has to bring to the table Ponder has a chance to be a great qb. He will fit rite into the game plan all we need IS TO IMPROVE ARE OL. Hey can every one stop crying and just get over wat happend if worst come to worst we will get the best qb in the next draft.

this is a great pick he’s a pocket qb!! awesome!! Maybe my vikes have gotten over the love affair with the black QB! I would like to see them bring Favre back to coach him!! We still have more picks! We are not that far removed from the div champ game! This guy is accurate and is very intellectual!! ….something tells me we are going to go out and get McNabb! PLEASE NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No more black QB’S. Gee I wonder if Sidney has had the surgury he needs or will he wait until this season starts to get it!…Maybe Percy can get on the practice field once in a while! If neither of these idiots can manage to practice … cut them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111

Some of you people need to chill, you’re looking like bad imitators of Jets fans. What do you really think the Vikings are going to accomplish this upcoming season with some of the numerous position needs they have? The draft is not going solve all the issues, so a “win now” attitude is not realistic. Ponder is a good, solid quaterback who will fit into the system. He should be given time to develop as these other needs are addressed, which is what free agency is for. Treating him like David Carr or Alex Smith would be a mistake and expecting (or demanding) any draftee to play like a Matt Ryan or Joe Flacco out of the gate is ridiculous.

We can get a great DB through FA (Nnamdi). Can’t find a franchise QB that way.

1st, for those saying this is the worst 1st round pick ever u are dead wrong. Demetruius Underwood was our worst 1st round pick ever, he never played a down for us. How can someone be a fail qb in the nfl if u havn’t seen him play yet? Most of u need to get a life, calling players idiots and stuff for not being able to practice cause of a migrain just goes to show some of the stupidity and childishness from most of u. Was it who I wanted? No. Was it a stretch? Maybe a little, but Redskins where going to take him at 16 so he wouldnt have been there in round 2. Is he the best pro-ready qb in the draft? Yes he was. Give him a chance

I am ecstatic about this pick! We put our trust in the new regime, god knows if Childress was still here Jackson would of been resigned and would now be our starter! They needed a quarterback and facts are other teams wanted quarterbacks too, I respect the decision to not give up more after already losing the third round pick, again thanks to Childress, quarterbacks were bound to go before it got to their pick, and this is the guy they wanted and it is far from a sure thing that one of he, Mallett and Dalton were going to be available come their second round pick and if Ponder is who they wanted well quarterback is our number one need! I am truly looking forward to Ponder becoming the real deal!!!!!!!

What a bunch of fair-weather fans……do a little research before you bash a guy. He was the smartest QB in the whole draft, he played in a west coast style offense at FSU, he is very mobile and a accurate passer. He obviously showed the Vikings organization something special. John Gruden said it best …” this kid is an excellent pick….very intelligent, very accurate and a perfect fit with the Vikings. He will be a starting QB in this league for years to come”. I will admit it was a surprise for me but after doing a little research i actually like the pick. GO VIKINGS!!!!!

Come on he is working on his second Masters Degree. He is pretty smart. Isn’t that worth something? I’m going to laugh when he succeeds!

Wow I’ve never heard such a outcry unless it’s from Giant fans. We’re supposed to be a hometown team not a bunch of fair-weather babies. It’s like we took an OL or a TE. Ponder is a very good fit for the Minnesota Vikings and if you can’t get behind the organization then find a new team. Obviously Prince or one of the available Ends would have had a more immediate affect on Vikings fans but clearly they see something in this young, smart guy. At least we took a first rounder this year even if he necessarily wasn’t.

TurnsOut to be a brilliant pick: Ponder
    all qb’s gone except Mallett

Hot news out today: vikings set to acquire McNabb

It’s good too see a few more positive comments about Ponder; however,
stilll a lot of negativity out there. (Very very sad) I wish Viking fans were like Packer fans. They support the Pack no matter what happens. I bleed purple always have….That will never change.. .”Welcome” to Minnesota Mr. Ponder. Please excuse YOUR fan base. Good luck!!!!!
