Spielman Says Vikings Will Keep Open Mind With #12 Pick In Draft

Posted by Mike Wobschall on April 15, 2011 – 2:40 pm

One of the reasons I love the drat so much is because everyone has opinions about players, teams and which teams should pick which players. Some Vikings fans think now is the time to find a franchise QB. Others don’t believe in this year’s QB crop and prefer the Vikings address the offensive or defensive line. And still others want the Vikings to take a look at the secondary or maybe even the WR position.

With several options potentially available for the Vikings with the 12th overall pick, Vikings fans can at least take solace in knowing that the team won’t be stubborn in an attempt to draft a particular player or address a certain position. The Vikings, who are guided by VP of Player Personnel Rick Spielman during the draft, will stay true to their philosophy of taking the best available player.

“I think there are multiple needs, I don’t think there’s one need,” Spielman said while chatting with Mike Florio on Friday’s edition of Pro Football Talk Live. “Obviously everybody is talking about the quarterback, but you’ve got to look at offensive line, you’ve got to look at your defensive line, you’ve got to look at your secondary.”

The tough part about projecting which player a team will select with its pick, especially when that team in sitting at #12 overall, is that you don’t know how teams in front of the 12th pick will behave.

“I think there’s going to be a lot of options there at that twelfth pick to fill one of those needs,” Spielman said, “and even potentially let’s say one of those receivers (A.J. Green and Julio Jones), I don’t know what’s going to happen, slides down to twelve and Sidney’s not under contract. There are some things you can do to maybe fill that need as well. That’s why going into this thing we’re going to have such an open mind and stick true to our board once we stack those guys; let’s take the best guy because we do have a lot of needs in some other areas besides quarterback.”

I Would LOVE RYAN MALLETT on the Vikings!!! He has Serious skills. Best arm and knowledge of the game. Best QB in draft!!! If these unfounded rumors weren’t floating around he would be a top 5 pick easy!!! Whats being said about him is way way off the true. Someone wrote really good article detailing his past and physical tools called lies, d**n lies, and RYAN MALLETT. google it
I say take Mallett at 12 and trade down the 2nd round pick and pick up a 3rd rounder. We did that last year. Franchise QB is too important!!! Need some one who can throw the ball a mile and accurately in small windows. Mallett can do that. he seems like a good guy. Frazer and Bill will do great with him. Take a chance vikings!!!

I say trade down a few spots still can get franchise player or other great starter and pick up an extra pick in later rounds. I like kaepernick from nevada or mallet. I think either one could be great player

Take Best player at twelve i belive Amukamura will be there at 12 or if Robert Quinn falls to 12 then definitley take one of those two.
QB’s will be there in the second round i think ponder dalton or locker would be good picks but neither of those three are ready to start this year.

If we expect to win this year, picking up a good FA quarterback is a high priority. Why waste a draft pick on a QB, unless you know he has all the requirements.

If we are signing all def. linemen, then work on drafting offensive linemen.

    :) :) :) :) :)

either get kaepernick or mallet at quarterback and either get prince or trade back and get a later 1st round pick and a 3rd or 2nd.

@QB Fever——- Ive always been a fan of Ryan Mallett and fully believe he will be a fantastic QB for years. I really really want the Vikings to take Mallett by any means possible. Also, ive read that article also about Mallett and its amazing. (If anyone wants, I can copy paste the url here)
    –(1) Ryan Mallett
–(2) DT Stephen Paea, S Rahim Moore, best OT/OG available, or even LB Bruce Carter

First of all ……………………Hopes of winning this season???????? Guys…we are in rebuilding mode! We will probably go 0-6 in our own division!

    So RELAX !

Let’s get real in our approach to this Draft….let’s start rebuilding those lines and that horrible secondary that has burnt our as#$# for the last couple of years!

QB…I like Locker…….but we all know that YOU NEVER KNOW!

If the draft is loaded with def. players into the third rd. and the OL. players are close to the third rd. for players.. And Ponder is the only one worthy of a second rd. pick….. Its seem the need to get a QB in what most say is a fix all year….. The path is front lines, secondary,or J.Jones? Taking Mallet(most have him in the 3rd. rd.) would not be the vikings way. Get two starters and use FA.

Just please” Don’t” trade the 12th overall pick to the Eagles for Kolb he’s not worth it, the Eagle are trying dump Kolb and his salary knowing that Mike Kafka is the better quarterback on their roster, whom they drafted last year out of Northwestern. If the Vikings make a deal with the devil or I mean Andy Reid, I guess that’s the same thing they will regret it for years to come. the Vikings need more draft picks, if anything trade down if possible in order to get more picks.

Not Mallett, he ran a 5.37 forty time. Ndamukung Suh ran a 5.03. We can’t have people in our division being that much faster than our QB… especially with our offensive line. He has trouble throwing on the run, and cannot reset his feet. Standing in the pocket, he is like a statue. I agree that he has a rocket for an arm, but he should not be the QB for the Vikings.

  12. By 4eversteve on Apr 16, 2011 | Reply

After the first two quarterbacks expected to come off the board there will be a run on the remaining ones as teams will begin to panic that they will lose the guy they covet and start trying to trade back up into the first round to get a quarterback with so many teams at the top of the draft needing a quarterback this year the frenzy will begin mark my words, quarterbacks that would normally go in the 3rd and 4th rounds will jump up into the bottom of the 1st and top of the 2nd wait and see.

Old School and I are on the same page ! ! !

Rebuild the lines and find somebody who can cover an NFL wide receiver ! ! !

Trade back to #16 and get a 3rd rounder. Take an offensive tackle or a defencive end or a Corner back.

Is it 2012 yet? Frederick Jones and I are in agreement!

Look, if we could just fix that secondary, it would make watching the games that more enjoyable………there has not been one single thing that has frustrated me more when I have watched this team over the last 3 to 4 years than watching that SO CALLED secondary !

It has …in one word………been just a pure “JOKE” !

with Ryan Mallett I’m starting to think the rumors are exaggerated. If it is then it puts him top on my qb list. You look at what he can do on his highlights and game tape and its like d**n, he can throw. He can read defenses, calls protection at the line. has worked under center, Insane arm and good accuracy. He has Improved each year. And really doesn’t do too bad with the rush as everyone says, pocket presence looks ok to me, steps up, moves around well. definitely can’t run for a 40 yd TD, but thats why we have AP, harvin etc. played SCC defense against many players in the top 10 and put up great numbers. The main thing i see in Mallett then in the other Qbs is being willing to take shots, cut throat.

I am a HUGE Viking fan who lives in Texas. I have had TCU football season tickets for the last 4 years and have watched QB Andy Dalton play the entire time. TCU is a small college competing with big colleges and won the Rosebowl this year and came out number 2 in the country. Andy was a huge part of their success and I think he would be great for the Vikings. Please give him serious consideration. He would make an excellent addition to the Vikings Offense.

The Vikings need to take either Jake Locker or Ryan Mallett at 12. I hope they draft Mallett but would be alright with Locker as well. We’re going for a Superbowl here, safe picks will never win you a Superbowl. No teams in the NFC will be shaking in their boots if we take a OL 1st round. Every year its the same “this is a weak QB year, lets wait til next year”, and I’m sick of not having a franchise QB while EVERY team the Vikings are competing with has one. Vikes avoided the safe pick and took a chance on drafting Percy Harvin in 2009, how’d that turn out? Offensive Rookie of the Year. PLEASE Spielman and co., take a QB

@Rick Spielman The Vikings should trade down from 12 to around 20+, pick up a pick, and take an offensive lineman (carimi, smith, pouncey, sherrod). They should then use the acquired pick and likely a fifth or future pick, as well as their 2nd, and trade into the 20-25 range and draft mallet. Then resign Sidney Rice and Randy Moss. They wont take the division this year but they’ll sure be fun to watch.

Mallet in the first and Rudolph in the second – don’t think it will happen, but man what a mouth watering prospect that would be!

Webb over Mallett. Webb over Locker. Get the Line fixed! Get Free Agent Harvey Dahl out of Atl. Sign Mcnabb for a mentor for Webb and vet Experiance. Those who do not like mcnabb..sit on it! look at his 08,09 stats. Mcnabb is a perfect fit for our rebuilding process! and for Webb! Mcnabb has miles left and we are in a rebuilding mode. Webb has the skills. In my eyes, he is better than any QB in this years class. Look at when he played against the eagles! he out played vick and looked way faster too. Vikings! Get Castonzo, sign Moss. Pick up Dahl out of Atlanta.( Perfect Guard and solid fit)

  26. By dave on Apr 17, 2011 | Reply

I agree with daniel but not sure if Joe Webb will be the franchise but if he learns from donovan mcnabb [if we get him} he might have a chance. Im not sure if hes better Than mallet and i think hes better than Jake Locker. I wouldnt mind getting Ricki Stanzi in the 4th or 5th round and build up at secondary and line. trade back to about 20 and get a 2nd or 3rd round pick too. Almost any quarterback could dominate with a good line. Dont forget about next year either there is Better quarterbacks thanthis year.

I very much think we need to draft mallet, would like to trade down 4 to 7 spots pick up a third and use that on jacques rodgers outta oregon st., ryan mallet is to good of a qb prospect for the vikings to pass up, like others i am sick of seeing year after year a patch job. every team in our division has a franchise qb, its time for the vikes to have one to!!!! i think dahl from atl would be a great pick up for our line. lets get serious 2 years ago people were saying we had the best team in the game, know were rebuilding? i think we just neeed a few of those perverbial pieces and we are back in line for the plkayoffs and once your in its all up for grabs. i really feel the new regime in min will get this right! i have faith spielman knows what he is doing, and i know ziggy wants a championship!!!!! ZIGGY WILF IS THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN TO THIS FRANCHISE!!!!!!!! HE WANTS TO WIN EVERY BIT AS MUCH AS EVERY LIFE LONG VIKES FAN!!! ( ALSO WE SHOULD LOOK INTO ASOMAHA FROM OAK)

  28. By Vikings FAN 15 on Apr 17, 2011 | Reply

I agree with QB fever and Robby, Ryan Mallet looks like he is going to be a great QB. Can throw the ball a mile and can throw accurately into small windows. because in college he was no threat to run he saw the toughest defenses in the sec and had a 32/12 td/ratio. People who say he is slow hasn’t seen how well he moves in the pocket and make people miss. His character concerns are complete media hoopla, he is a good guy. DRAFT him 12!!!! you won’t be disappointed!!! trade the 2nd pick down and pick up a third rounder!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!! ITS OUR TURN TO HAVE A FRANCHISE QB!!!

I hope Speilman is open minded… however, my gut feeling is he has already made up his mind to pick Locker with the #12 pick.

Locker has a career QB rating under 125 with 53 TDs and 39 INTs. Locker wasn’t even the best QB at the senior bowl.

I think… Speilman and Frazier will panic and trade up ahead of Washington to get Locker.

I can see Speilman giving up our #12 pick and our #43 pick for Locker.

  30. By QB FEVER on Apr 17, 2011 | Reply

Ryan Mallett had a 62/19 td/int ratio in his time at college with a 163 passer rating. He had a 64% comp. last year and that is with being a deep ball thrower. seriously. come on vikings!! Pull the trigger, and get mallett. Locker is 2 maybe 3 years down the road and may never be the QB we need. Mallett is the best QB in the draft. His Personal issues are all made up. COME ONE VIKINGS. FOR ONCE LETS GET OUR QB OF THE FUTURE!!

Vikings FAN 15 totally agree! If we dont take Mallet we will be kicking ourselfs in the butt in years to come.

  32. By smelltourjzy on Apr 17, 2011 | Reply

The Vikings are in need throughout the roster. DL OL DB’s you name it we need it! I think when the team is in such a place we have to consider filling most pressing need with best rated player available. Our DB’s were exposed last year but part of that problem stemmed from our complete lack of a pass rush. Jared Allen pulled a Houdini last season and exposed an aring D-line, and a team that doesn’t blitz will have a toasty DB’s! I think the Vikes still have some potent Offensive talent but it’s gonna take a few seasons to rebuild in a tough division. I do like Jake Locker but 2-3 round pick(he’s a football player).

  33. By joshK on Apr 17, 2011 | Reply

LOL at trading up for Jake Locker or even taking him or mallet at 12. that wont happen. maaaaybe if we traded back but hopefully not. sign a FA QB and rebuild the team while we compete. CB/OL in the 1st Safety in the 2nd. our secondary is so bad thats why our Dline had no time to pressure. we have a different scheme now we will bring blitzes(Eagles game) lets get some Dbacks that can cover and a line to protect whoever plays QB. marc bulger fer the win.

I think Winfield would make a great Saftey, like Corey Chavous when he made his transition. I feel Winfield would do alot better than Chavous. I heard these rumors. are they true?

  35. By DaNorseman on Apr 18, 2011 | Reply

@Daniel— I have heard those rumors before also but i really feel like they’ll keep him at CB for now but certainly wouldnt be surprised if he was moved to saftey, he is smart enough to make the transition. Also, whoever said that omg N. Sue can run faster than Mallett! Well dang near all defensive lineman can run faster than Brady and Manning, they seem to be doing just fine. Quick quote also, Jared Allen has even said the hardest QB to bring down is Ben Roethlisberger and the toughest to get to is Peyton Manning, that just shows you right there that the whole 5.31 40 is all wishy wash talk, if the QB knows how to adjust protection at the line (Mallett does) and can get the ball out quick with velocity (Mallett can) than there is no problem. Mallett needs to be in purple because he can be a star for years to come.

Drafting Lockert or Mallet at 12 would set the Vikings back like the 2005 draft did? what a wasted draft – {2} 1st rounders and passed on Rodges twice? took a patheic WR and a DE? not even in the NFL after 6yrs? Sure we had Culpepper hows the knee? NFL is a violent game – and 1 play can end a season or career. Can always use a trade material in a few years if you don’t ask for toooo much like the Eagles always do? Kolb – like I’ve said before if he is so great why did he get bench in favor of Vick?

That’s why you always pick the best player available reguardless of position or need – like we did with Peterson and Havin.

I hope Bowers falls to the Vikes at 12 might be able to trade down with Pats? get the 28 and 33 picks. I don’t know why eveyone is crying about the 3rd pick we lost? name me a player the Vikes have drafted in the 3rd round that is worth anything since 2005? Need to do a better job drafting in the 3rd

Then I hope all those teams dying for a QB – would make a trade for the 28th pick – get a 1st and 4th rounder in 2012 used the 33 to draft a QB or better trade for a 1st rounder in 2012 – we need Luck from Stanford – ya these QB might be good 5 years from now or out of the NFL.

  37. By Ekolu on Apr 18, 2011 | Reply

I like Mallett too, but we have to do our homework. Remember, he is a coaches son. I believe we have a depth at RB, we have depth at TE, we have depth at OL, we have depth Safety(but FS needs a playmaker) depth at CB(barring Injuries). We are uncertain at WR, because of Sidney Rice’s situation and Bernard Berrian’s contract. QB is a no brainer, we have to get one in the draft somewhere and we also need a veteran to come in as well. Then, we need more depth on the DL.with Sugar Ray Edwards and Neverson Griffen’s off season antics. Pat Williams is old and probably gone, K Wil has given up his star caps case, so the 3 most important positions of need are QB, DL, and WR. Probably in that order.

  38. By Rudso on Apr 18, 2011 | Reply

There is so much we can do at #12 that the possibilities are endless. Since we like to draft by talent and we have many needs, it all depends on who is left on the board.

Prince could fall to us (I doubt it since Cowboys and Texans are picking before us), Julio Jones would make sense since Rice wants to check out FA and Harvin has his migraines. However, that WR core would be sick! I do hope we end up with Mallet somehow but I don’t see us picking him at 12.

Someone will pick him in the 1st round or early 2nd round before our pick. So if we want him, we better make a move. Now if by some miracle Prince and J. Jones make it to us, things could get interesting.

If we have Webb and Mallet, add a vet to the mix, our new OC coach will make something work with these guys. Bottom line, I have full faith that the Vikings will make the right choice come draft day. We did draft Peterson, Harvin and Rice and look at them now.

Viking fans need to stop worrying so much, fine we had ONE bad year, look how our Defense did the year before that. Maybe getting embarrassed last year was what they needed. Fuel for the fire.

  39. By Samo on Apr 18, 2011 | Reply

I say we sign free agent qb Marc Bulger for this year, and then concentrate on drafting an OL at #12 (Carimi, Castonzo, Pouncey) and then a good corner/safety in the 2nd round. Obviously our OL was a weakness last year and no matter what qb might be picked will have a tough time staying upright without a good o-line. Also, the secondary needs help, especially safety.

  40. By wolfman on Apr 18, 2011 | Reply

Please don’t talk to me about Jake Locker as a potential Vikings QB. Take a look at his career highlights…3/4 of them are RUNS. Granted, the guy has wheels, but how many NFL QB’s (Vick excluded) last more than 1-2 years by means of their running ability? The linebackers that you see him running around in college don’t exist in the NFL. He tries those runs in the NFL, some outside linebacker is going to make the highlight films by LIGHTING HIM UP.

If this is a rebuilding year (and anyone except the most ARDENT Vikings fan thinks so), lets take care of our offensive line woes first, and our secondary second (no pun intended). If a decent QB falls to us, then so be it, but let’s get quality first.

  41. By wolfman on Apr 18, 2011 | Reply

I’d like to see a franchise QB for the Vikings as much as anyone, but I’m not sure Mallet is the guy, either. If he has trouble getting away from college players, defensive coordinators will salivate when they play us. We will make the LIONS def line look like all-stars.

Not Mallet’s fault, and he has a cannon for an arm, but if he doesn’t have time to use it, it’s for naught. Let’s firm up our O-line and give WHOEVER our QB is a CHANCE by allowing him some time to throw it. I like next year’s QB crop!!

No matter who the Vikings draft, it would be stupid to get rid of Joe Webb one of the most explosive players in the NFL today even if he doesn’t remain at quarterback he is a weapon that could create match-up nightmares whether that be on special teams or at wide receiver. I still hope he get the chance to compete for starting quarterback role, there is something about this kid his poise that he displayed as a rookie was very impressive I think this kid will whine up making the naysayers eat their words.
