5 Names Added To The QB Collection

Posted by Mike Wobschall on February 28, 2011 – 8:55 am

The QB Collection began 2 weeks ago with 5 names of potential starting QBs for the Vikings in 2011 (and hopefully beyond) and has since grown to a list of 21 names. The latest update added 5 names to the mix and the complete list can be seen by clicking here.

The names added to the list on Monday were: Pat Devlin, Matt Hasselbeck, Shaun Hill, Brady Quinn and Adam Weber.

For those of you who are visiting the QB Collection for the first time, here’s a brief explanation of what we’re doing here. There are many names that will be mentioned in connection with the Vikings QB position this offseason, from draft-eligible players to potential free agents or trade acquisitions. In order to keep up with the speculation and stay up-to-date on the names, we’ve created The QB Collection, a page on vikings.com that contains a running list of names tied to the Vikings by NFL observers in the media and by fans who correspond with vikings.com.

The QBs will be listed in alphabetical order and this list will continue to grow as the NFL draft draws closer.

Do you have a name you’d like to add? Or do you have a comment/question about a name already on the list? If so, let us hear it by either posting your thoughts in the comments section below this entry or by sending in an email to me (wobschallm@vikings.nfl.net).

    Mike Wobschall,
Did you get a chance to talk to any of the QBs on your list when you were at the combine? Is Locker still your favorite?

Hope they take a really good hard look at Devlin.

I have a question. Is anyone else sick of hearing how great Cam Newton is? I mean the people on Nfl network spent the whole weekend whinning about how great he is. Whats even more annoying is that they where doing it when Qbs where not even working out.

Adam Caplan has a nice evaluation of the QBs at the combine. Devlin made his top 7.

You know Pat Devlin was impressive during one game I watched, although Delaware lost to Eastern Washington in the championship game. I think the Vikes should focus on larger schools and QBs like Gabbert, Newton, Mallett, etc.

How about getting Matt Flynn from GB and dominating once more?

  7. By DRS on Feb 28, 2011 | Reply

Though Andy Dalton sounds like a good choice. I do think we need an o-line pick in the draft before a QB. Get a veteran QB in the free agency and get a QB in the mid draft position.

  8. By DRS on Feb 28, 2011 | Reply

We need someone who can be another Fran Tarkenton. Mike do you see anyone who will fit the bill?

well I got to go. G0D bless U all.

Maybe they should trade back a couple spots and pick up a mid second early third. Then draft the best Tackle first, followed by Dt Stephen Paea in the second then with the third or second from trade get the Qb they like the most. 4th Te Jordan Cameron from USC. 5th a saftey other 5th a guard. 6th a linebacker (Mark Herzlich). 7th another saftey or oline compettion.

Matt Hasselbeck? Shaun Hill? Somebody needs to please explain to me why the Vikings would not take a QB with their 1st round pick because I’m lost. We see basically all of the teams in the NFC, aka the teams we need to beat to make the Superbowl, with franchise QB’s, most of them drafted in the first round (Rodgers, Cutler, Stafford, Ryan, Manning, Freeman, Bradford, etc) yet the Vikings are complacent taking a tackle with their first pick? Some even suggest trading that pick for a later pick…
Quite simply, if the Vikings do not take a QB with their 1st round pick, then I don’t think they are serious about winning a Superbowl.

If the Vikings don’t take a QB with the 12th pick (or trade up for one), then they might as well stick with Joe Webb. Webb’s a stud, and he’s shown a lot of promise. I like Kaepernick, but he’s essentially the same player as Webb. I like Newton or potentially Locker with that 12th pick (Gabbert will be gone), and unless they can scoop Mallett in the 2nd Round (which is also questionable based on his talent and character issues) I’d rather see them stick with our boy Joe. Skol Vikes.

  13. By PrinzCharlez on Feb 28, 2011 | Reply

Viking brothers, please do not think the Vikes must use thier #12 pick in the first round to get a QB. Tom Brady was picked in the 6th round. I like TCU Andy Dalton we could get in the 2nd rd. OL line is the way to go with pick #12, Im jus sayin’

  14. By Ghost Rider on Feb 28, 2011 | Reply

Prinz Charlez – I agree with you, but I just think it’d be a waste to draft a QB outside the 1st round. If we’re going to do that I’d rather stick with Webb (Sixth Round, Pick 199). I can’t think of anyone outside the 1st Round I’d take over Webb. As for the first round, Gabbert and Locker are more polished as passers and Newton is a winner, reminds me a lot of Daunte Culpepper with his size, arm, and scrambling ability. We’ve already got a project QB in Webb, so if we’re going to grab a QB outside the 1st round it’d be a waste. I like Dalton and Kaepernick, but not as much as I like Mr. Webb. Whether it’s a QB or an OL or maybe even a DB (which is desperately needed), I’m sure Frazier & Company will make the right decision.

This is the sixth year the Vikings have been looking for a Q.B., in the mean time several franchise Q.B’s. have been pass on and drafted by other teams, do I need to name, names..
Now you have the Q.B. list that will idenify Q.B. prospects, good luck with that.

Your next starting Q.B. should already be on your teams roster, its been six years.
Clean-out your front office, hire some smart football people and start rebuilding.
In todays N.F.L. your looking at a 3-year period to get this done.

What about Alex Smith? He’s a free agent right? Add him to the list. I wouldn’t mind if vikings gave him a shot because I believe he can still be a good QB in the NFL.

  19. By vikes on Feb 28, 2011 | Reply

Vikes need to talk Favre into returning. He is still the best QB in the NFL. Webb, Jackson, Kolb, Alex Smith…get real. Favre is the man! He’s proven it the last two years and now with Rice back for the full season, there would be no stopping us. Skol Vikings!

@Vikes– Are you serious about Favre?

I think Favre is the best choice the vikings have to go to a superbowl. So get him the protection he needs to get nthe job done

The Vikings have no business trying to draft a QB with the 12th overall pick. We’re looking for a pro-style pocket passing quarterback to compliment our excellent backfield, and this year’s draft doesnt really have any worth looking at, at least not for a first round pick. We’d be better off picking up a quarterback with some experience in the West Coast system for two or three season while we wait on a worthwhile draft pick or for Webb to come to form.

We need a qb that can come in and do what Brett did in 2009!!!! Play the game and give Webb time to develope or bring in a newbie(rookie) and let him develope. But we can not waste AD’s legs !!! Every year is another year of pounding on the kid and eventually he is goin to want to leave and be part of a winning SUPERBOWL team!!! Brett proved if we have a viable QB that can throw the ball down field we can win !!! Now w/ RICE playing his card we need to think about another credible recvr as Brett took the hit for SYDNEY’s selfish delay in havin surgery…. Chilli was of no help either as should have been no brainer he needed to look for Back-up WR to replace loss of Sydney.Waiting until in-season was mistake was off season move

Hopefully Percy can quit eating CHOCOLATE (worst thing you can do if you suffer from migraines is eat chocolate) and stay healthy and quit being a question mark for every game.. Good grief I look at what this team had and has we are so close to being a 13-3 14-2 team again. w/ a QB that can throw the ball downfield and get teams out of a 8-9 in the box defensive scheme so we can cut AD loose !!! Cam newton reminds me of Randall Cunnigham physically but looks like he can play pocket football through the air and is also mobile !!!

they will get there ass kicked this year and for the next 3 to 4 years. vikings have lots of spots to fill on there team and ant going to do it with the draft.. GAME OVER!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. By Rogerthevikefan on Mar 1, 2011 | Reply

Why draft a Qb in the first when there is no clear cut top one. Get a mid round guy to compete against Webb. Give Webb the chance he may very well work out and if things go to pot next season draft Luck because he is the only Qb in the next couple years worth a 50 million dollar investment.

JOE WEBB played great in that Eagles game. Andy Reid, buddy of useless Brad Childress, and his dog killer superstar QB wanted & needed that game real bad. It cost them home field and Joe Webb beat ‘em. Surely, he deserves a opportunity to mature @ the helm. Leslie Frazier is smart & hopefully knows this. Sign a seasoned vet as back-up & mentor & a prospect in draft. Shore-up the porous offensive line & help the kid out.

Pickup a veteran QB and draft a mid round QB rookie. Build the O-line and defense. If you protect your QB you will score. A dominate defense wins games.

  31. By vikesrule on Mar 1, 2011 | Reply

If taking a qb at 12 it should be locker. accurate on the run, fast, smart, natural leader, brett farve tough. showed improved accuracy at combine. good character. I also think webb is good. always calm, he’s got the moves to go with the speed, big arm, good completion percentages in his two starts, and protects the ball. Hopefully the new union deal will still allow the vikes to pick up some more picks from their free agents.

i say we should use our first round on a CB like patrick peterson or else OL beef up our offense or defense keep webb for a year then draft a qb next year that can keep up with rogers, cutler, and stafford why get a qb this year when we cant protect our qb look at stafford we cant afford injuries like that so i say beef up our offense and defense then qb next year or just keep webb and sign another vet

  34. By vikesrule on Mar 2, 2011 | Reply

I just think he will be a solid franchise quarterback. The man won his bowl game with a broken wrist gods sake.

  35. By JrodVikesFan on Mar 2, 2011 | Reply

I think Dvelin, Dalton and Joe Webb need to be our top QB priorities. I really feel Webb has done the job to earn top potential. He is a great spark we need when old man Favre would constantly chuck it up for whoever or take an unnecessary sack. We need mobility in a QB as well as decision making….gunslinger mode has not worked for us. Most of all though…if MN doesnt get Sidney Rice back….our passing game wont be much, we need a that possesion/big play guy, so Percy, Shiancoe, Peterson have a chance to be viable in the pass game….we see what happen when he wasn’t there….not much!

VIKINGS!!!! LOVE YOU!!! Its simple 4 QB’S to pick from.. McNabb, Hasslebeck, Palmer’s just itchin to leave cincy… or Vince Young I truly believe would work too. We are a great team, just need to set sail with a new captain… please sign one of them and put us back on the map… I really want to stick it to green bay next year.. trash talkin little girls they are

  40. By jason on Mar 4, 2011 | Reply

It would be great to land Palmer, or McNabb to fill in while we find a young QB to groom….speaking of grooming a young QB…..Colin Kaepernick, that is the guys the vikes need to go after in the draft, hands down he is the best young prospect available to them…..Locker is along shot, Mallet is the next Derek Anderson…..Gabbert hmmmm….shuler/leaf, are my best comparisons, and Cam newton is a loud mouth version of Joe Webb….and Webb has way more upside than Newton! Kapernick has the arm strength…..he has good accuracy, mechanix are a little rough, but that can be worked on. he played in a spread offense but i think he can do good from under center if he is coached well. He has the most upside of all the QB’s in the draft and can be had for a 2nd round…possibly low first round selection…..i doubt he falls belopw the middle of the second round though….the other guys you will hear about down the road is Rick Stanzi….he ll be agreat back up that will even get the chance to start someday….think Kyle Orton….you always wonder how he got to start, but you hvae to admit he can get the job done.

  41. By jason on Mar 4, 2011 | Reply

Hey Speilman……Draft Colin Kaepernick! let him compete with Joe Webb….stay far away from Newton/Lockjer/Gabbert/Mallet…….Draft Kaepernick!!!!

  42. By Steve on Mar 5, 2011 | Reply

I have been impressed with Kellen Moore from Boise State. He isn’t in the draft this coming year, but I think he is certainly a NFL prospect. I dare say, no one prepares for a game like Kellen Moore.

  43. By Steve on Mar 5, 2011 | Reply

Over the last several years, the offensive play calling has been too predictable! Run Peterson on first down, run Peterson on second down, Favre throws on third down. NFL defenses saw this pattern and were for the most part able to force a three and out. Hopefully the play calling and game plan will improve this year. I think Brett would be a good addition to the coaching staff. After all, you can’t play as many seasons as he did under some of the coaches in the league without learnig something

I know we have a lot of names already added to our list but I would like at least one more and maybe to subtract one. Greg Mcelroy should be added to our list, 48 out of 50 on the Wonderlic test, this guy is smart and athletic and he’s a later round pick. Save that first round pick for someone to replace Pat Williams or improve Defense. Kyle Orton should be removed from our list, under John Elway’s guidance Denver final realized that Tebow might not be the answer this year.

how about trading back in the first for another second round, securing kaepernick in the first, then two oline in second.
